Album Description

Ontario's Bedouin Soundclash has emerged as a young group refusing to be classified, while blurring the lines of reggae and rock. Look for them on the Vans Warped Tour this summer.

What happens when you combine Folk, Pop and Reggae? You end up with Bedouin Soundclash. All of the songs have catchy hooks and choruses, so there is never really a "dead spot" on the CD.
If you are a fan of the old style Reggae, then this might just be a group for you.

4 out of 5 stars Funky Kingston.......2005-09-16

Kingston, Jamaica? No, mon, that'd be Kingston Ontario. As in Canada. As in wind chill, blizzards, and block heaters. And trust me, when Toots Hibbert sang about a "Funky Kingston" there was nobody getting the two towns mixed up. Yet as unlikely as it may seem - especially given the fact that Bedouin Soundclash played among all the trendy screamo bands on this summer's Warped tour - these Canuck kids do the reggae like they stepped straight outta Trenchtown.

"Sounding A Mosaic" was produced by Darryl Jennifer (of DC hardcore legends the Bad Brains), and he does an ace job of maintaining that sense of lazy space featured in all great reggae. Everything bobs, slinks, and hops with an unhurried, heavy-lidded pace, perfect for power-lounging on a tropical beach (or, given their citizenship, maybe a particularly muggy kitchen). Singer Jay Malinowski's voice resembles Bob Marley, but the band lays down grooves more similar to the reggae-lite of Jimmy Cliff, with a few overtones of dub and an appropriately distant element of Two-Tone ska. For extra cred, they do a version of the Maytones' "Money Worries" that features Vernon Maytone himself on vocals. Not that they needed the help, as the lead-off single "When The Night Feels My Song" is so feel-good melodic that Johnny Nash probably would've eaten his own head just to have it as a followup to "I Can See Clearly Now."

So it's Funky Kingstons now. As in two of them. As in who'da thunk? I guess it was inevitable that there'd be some pleasant trickle-down effect of rampant globalization.

5 out of 5 stars Just like a mosaic: Simple when you look close but beautiful and complex as a whole.......2005-06-22

It's as simple as this: one beautiful voice, one single guitar playing hypnotic reggae clean riffs, one inspired bass line (the album is produced by Bad Brains bass player Darryl Jennifer) and drums that you can't almost notice on some songs that almost seem like some acoustic roots reggae and have much more importance on drum and bass tracks giving a refreshing beat to this album.

BSC doesn't fall in the temptation of adding extra instruments or effects to make their album sound more eclectic, they stick to the ingredients above giving us the impression that they are talented and they don't need any cheap trick to make it more obvious.

They are great song writers: each song as its own story, the lyrics are wise, and as for the music, they manage to change the beat at the perfect moment, bring a catchy chorus so you don't get bored and find yourself listening to the whole CD begging for more.

I personnaly regret that the 2 remix songs don't bring much and somehow betray the global feeling of the album.

In addition to this album I would suggest Root Fire which is as solid as this one, not to be considered as a prequel to Sounding a Mosaic but as another beautiful "mosaïc" which confirms that these guys have their own style. If you don't know him, I would also suggest Patrice early albums :"Ancient Spirit" & "Lions EP"

Amazon.com

For his third collaboration with director Sam Mendes (after American Beauty and The Shawshank Redemption), composer Thomas Newman has come up with one of his finest scores. The music mixes modern atmospheric quasi-rock touches with Middle Eastern influences (with particularly great success on the tracks "Welcome to the Suck" and "Zoomies."). The latter manifest themselves in both the beats and the instrumentation--the credits include soloists on exotic instruments such as the bowed cumbus (a type of banjo-like lute) and the processed xaphoons (a sax made of bamboo). All the more jarring, then, when the CD's handful of songs pop up. (It's quite a jolt to hear Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy" after four eerie instrumental tracks.) The other song picks are obvious but well chosen: T-Rex's "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," "Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P.," Public Enemy's "Fight the Power," and Tom Waits's "Soldier's Things." Still, it's Newman's work that propels this CD, not the pick-up songs. Surprisingly, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," which figures in one of the movie's most memorable scenes (when soldiers watch Apocalypse Now), isn't included here. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You fools!.......2006-10-27

I am reading all the negative reviews of this soundtrack, and most of them mention the absence of Kanye West's "Jesus Walks." One reviewer gives the album one star because he was "misled" into buying the album.

Um, hello? This is an instrumental score for the film! NOT a Various Artists soundtrack! This is, you may have noticed, an album that falls under the name of Thomas Newman! If anyone bought this expecting other music, then it's entirely their own fault. It even says on the front: "MUSIC BY THOMAS NEWMAN."

That said, I'd also like to correct Amazon on something - they said this is Newman's third outing with Mendes, the other two being "Shawshank Redemption" and "American Beauty."

Shawshank was directed by Frank Darabont, NOT Sam Mendes.

Mendes' other pairing with Newman was actually on 2002's "Road to Perdition," which is another great soundtrack I'd heartily recommend purchasing.

3 out of 5 stars Missing Theme Song - but otherwise not bad.......2006-03-01

If you've watched the previews for this film, you're likely expecting a song called Jesus Walks by Kanye West to be on the soundtrack but it's not there - very annoying. But otherwise it's a pretty good CD of music to listen to while you work out or drive fast.

3 out of 5 stars Fine score, but a consumer warning for the CD.......2006-01-20

Thomas Newman's original music for JARHEAD is not only typically daring with many unconventional sounds (utilizing samples, electronic treatments and exotic percussion), but one of his most stirring, rock-influenced efforts as well (as with the opening track, "Welcome to the Suck"). At first I thought there were no melodies as memorable as "Dead Already" from AMERICAN BEAUTY or "Road to Chicago" from ROAD TO PERDITION, but the 3/4-time march used in both "Raining Oil" and "Desert Storm" has grown on me. Of course the CD is recommendable for Newman's score alone. But...

...while one doesn't buy a CD of this nature primarily for the extra songs, one does expect the extras to be competently presented when they appear. So I was taken aback to hear Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" at a faster tempo and higher pitch than usual, as though mastered from a sped-up tape. I can't think of any intentional reason for this, so I'm assuming it was a mistake, but either way I found it not only annoying in itself but because of "Fight the Power"'s thematic significance, with its reference to the Bobby McFerrin tune heard earlier in the movie. ("'Don't Worry Be Happy' was a number one jam/Damn if I say it you can slap me right here".)

So then, while I like the Thomas Newman score a lot, I'm docking the CD a star for the sped-up "Fight the Power". Caveat emptor.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Newman is a Genius!.......2006-01-07

Thomas Newman is brilliant as always and delivers beautifully. Having read the book prior to the motion picture, Thomas Newman truly brings Swofford's tale to life. If you enjoyed The Horse Whisperer or the Shawshank Redemption score, then you'll thoroughly enjoy Jarhead.

3 out of 5 stars Almost perfect for the film, loses points as a cd.......2005-12-23

Make no mistake - Jarhead proves Thomas Newman's abillity to write music for film. He is not making the music in order to show off his amazing talents, he is making the music so it is perfect for the film. Whereas some composers might score depressing scenes with grand sweeping movements trying to make themselves look like complex composers, Newman knows what will enhance the scene and what won't, and what can convey the message required.

Ultimately, this describes Jarhead perfectly. I have seen the movie and music is seamless and perfect for it. For the most part, there is a sonic texture created, with guitars and drums to represent the bravado of the characters. If you are a fan of Newman's stirring orchestral works this is definitely not something you would like. Newer fans of "American Beauty" and the like will find things to enjoy here, but not in as vibrant or pleasing a way as in that album. The score on it's own is just not as exciting or involving as it could be. It is interesting in it's own right, but not very pleasing to hear. However, there are many good tracks interspersed throughout the score to take you to the good spot.

Overall, Jarhead warrants a 4.5/5 for the film, but on a cd, it's score drops to 3/5. It is pleasant at times, and mostly an interesting CD, but there are too many Newman masterpieces to consider this one high on your buying list. Then agan, if you are a Newman fan, this CD should satisfy you're urge to see what the guy is up to. Final score? Three out of five.

Eclecticism reigns supreme in the world of illbient. Raz Mesinai, Sub Dub's percussionist in residence, has put together a super-swingin' album. Featuring the sultry lyrical stylings of Honeychild, the album Bedouin Sound Clash wondrously whisks you away to expansive deserts of shifting sands to find yourself in one of the most relaxing and tantalizing musical oases you have ever happened across.

The use of Middle Eastern percussion instruments and samples, as well as Middle Eastern percussion patterns, serves Mesinai all the better when it comes to enthralling his audience. He also mixes in some reggae dubs, as on track three, "Pressurizor," beautifully complementing his percussion tracks. And one really has to credit him for bringing in a vocalist as talented as Honeychild. When listening to the album, one can not help but feel that the two musicians were made for one another. --Ryan Kuykendall

    Album Description

A highly experimental dub album that combines heavy reggae-influenced rhythms with Middle Eastern percussion, and the occasional striking female vocal (Honeychild). From Raz Mesinai, master dubber and percussionist, and one-half of Sub Dub. Bedouin Sound Clash was conceived and recorded in Raz's basement studio with a four track cassette recorder and a multivox echo chamber. Although the record utilizes a new style of dub, it preserves an organic feel with reggae rhythms, analog sounds, and Egyptian and Bedouin percussion.

3 out of 5 stars Honeychild lifts this album up...........2006-12-02

There has been quite a buzz surrounding the re-release of this very worthy ten year old album.

Most of the music on the album features very reasonable but unremarkable UK sounding dubwise tracks -- but -- what makes this an indispensible, essential purchase is the enigmatic vocals on four of the tracks by the under recorded, under rated Honeychild.

She has a beautiful voice which, though not a conventional female roots voice, fits the mystery of this music -- perfectly. Listen to the cloudy, smoky paranoia of "Suspicion" with the drizzle of a rain storm and muted thunder rolls underlying the entire rhythm structure.

Listen to the backward tape loops of her voice on the disorienting "Lack Of Dub To The Brain" over a dense backdrop of muted, hushed spoken samples, flutes and cries -- and it's clear that this is an original contribution to the reggae music canon.

On the track "Snake Charmer" Honeychild's vocal is not as unique or impressive, sounding more like a conventional lover's rock chanteuse. Think UK lovers styles meets Ari Up's "Some Love". It is reasonable -- but ordinary in comparasion with her other intriguing and captivating vocals on this album.

Honeychild -- unquestionably --deserves her own album.

These four Honeychild tracks are, overwhelmingly, reminiscent of Rhythm and Sound music -- They feature that same "roll off" sub low bass rumble and hiss. In this case though, there is a psychedelic loneliness and melancholy in the vocals. This is eerie dubwise at its best.

Grab this while it lasts for the Honeychild tracks -- Don't wait for it to delete and then be re-issued ten years from now.

4 out of 5 stars middle eastern sounds and classic dub fusion.......2001-07-19

How can you not like a fusion of middle eastern drum sounds, hypnotic singing (Honey Child) and classic jamaican dub?

My coworkers and i have ripped this and listen to it almost daily. When I first heard it, i thought maybe it was a Scientist or King Tubby record. But then i noticed how dense the beats were. The production sounded more modern, the bass heavy, the drumming ethereal in the mix. Sampled vocals come and go in the mix, lending this dub a hypnotic middle-eastern flavor that is really unique.

i like, very much. If you dig dub, you'll dig this.

1 out of 5 stars Monotonous: no bedouin, no class.......2001-05-16

There is no lack of talent on Badawi's label, there is just a lack of inspiration. The monotonous sounds may provoke instances of bewildered gasps for air from the listener. When is it going to happen? Maybe that is Badawi's motivation? It left this reviewer wondering why he ever bothered listening to the entire album. Not recommended!

    Album Description

Bedouin Soundclash combines modern urban sounds with classic reggae fundamentals. The band formed in early 2000 when Eon Sinclair (bass) met Jay Malinowski (vocals/guitar) at university. Their casual conversation about dub music inspired an informal session covering classic reggae standards. The two decided to play again the next night, asking Brett Dunlop (djembe) to come out. The later addition of Pat Pengelly (drums) filled out their sound, and Bedouin Soundclash was born. Since their inception, Bedouin Soundclash has gained a large and loyal fan base. They have established themselves as one of Kingston's premier bands, opening for The Pocket Dwellers and David Usher. Their unique yet accessible sound has become widely popular amongst the college circuit. Their debut album, Root Fire, received much critical praise. The album held the number one position on Queen's University radio CFRC for several weeks and still continues to chart. Sounding A Mosaic was produced by Daryl Jennifer of the legendary Bad Brains and features a remake of "Money Worries" (by the Maytones) featuring Mr. Vernon "Maytone" Buckley himself. If that weren't enough, there are also two superb remixes by E-Clair and the world-renowned Paul Lazare (Gotan Project). Sweet, smooth, soulful and honest, Sounding A Mosaic is set to become an instant reggae favorite.

The soundclash has come a long way from their debut album "Rootfire" which was more soft rock driven then "Sounding A Mosaic". Thats not to say that it wasn't dripping with reggae though... Because it was. Anyway, im excited to see what they bring to the table on their next album "Street Gospels" which is due to come out late 2005 or early 2006. I'm excited to see if the album incorporates more of what the name suggests... gospel. For the time being they will be engaged in Vans Warped Tour. Also, at music.yahoo.com Bedouin has been selected for yahoo musics "Who's Next" user's choice against three other bands so.... do your part and vote as many times as you want. If they win the will do a yahoo exclusive interview and they will record a live preformance.

5 out of 5 stars Bedouin Soundclash delivers!!!.......2004-06-11

The fellas from Bedouin Soundclash produce a sonic amalgam composed of equal parts rhythm, melody, and lyrical genius on their new album. They effectively deliver a series of lyrically rich tracks which satisfy their fans' ravenous musical appetite. Their sweet melodies leave once-starved listeners satisfied and searching for more of their "musical crack rock". Pengelly delivers delicious drum beats with a maturity and discipline reminiscent of a tibetan monk. Sinclair's thumping bass confronts the most passive listener and says "rise to the occasion or prepare for a hearty serving of sonic subordination, okay?". Finally, Malinowski's smooth vocals provide a lyrical adhesive like no other. In short, this album will knock you on your arse, place you in a musical chokehold, and then force you to confront many prevalent social issues. Are you ready?

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars There's nothing to keep my attention into..........2005-04-12

...so I got irritated and bored while trying to listen to this. I had borrowed it from a friend, but I don't feel like taking it to in-depth listening.... what I heard was enough for now. Maybe the songs can grow on me if i hear someone playing them and people enjoying, but until then I suggest that you buy some other great compilation like one from the East 2 West - series on turkish based Doublemoon Records run by modern sufi-musician Mercan Dede.

Bar de Lune has released wonderful albums from Christophe Goze and Radar, and I have a feeling Fragile State and Al-Pha-X albums could be good stuff also (haven't heard them yet). But this compilation has none of them on it, but a long list of projects previously unknown to me. And none of them sticks in my head...

You might also want to try Arabian Travels compilations on ever-great Six Degrees Records and their new artist release called Niyaz, combining persian music with cutting-edge electronics.
