French only live album recorded at the Cirque Royal, Nuits Botaniques in Brussels in 2001 with a string ensemble. Includes two previously unreleased songs, 'I'm Still Waiting' & 'Blackbird'. What the press have said of his studio albums, Q Magzine; 'He delivers less a collection of songs, more an extended mood piece. That mood tends to the melacholic side of reflection, with Blake citing Scott Walker and David Sylvian among his influences'. Music Week (on his 1st album); 'The singer insisted that the vocals should be taped in a suitably atmospheric environment, and eventually settled on a church by a lake in Somerset, resulting in a distinctive, mournful sound'. As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Beautiful.......2007-06-15

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

Complete?.......2007-04-07

This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.

Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03

I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

Josh Groban in Concert has all the ingredients to be a long-running PBS staple: a young (21), good-looking performer with a golden voice; songs in Italian and Spanish for the crossover crowd (i.e., Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman) and pop and movie songs for the mainstream; guest stars galore (David Foster, John Williams, Angie Stone, Andrea Corr, Lili Haydn); a large orchestra; and striking but not obtrusive visual effects. The centerpiece of this DVD-CD combo (also available in a DVD keepcase) is the 80-minute concert DVD, filmed in Pasadena in October 2002 and featuring numerous songs from Groban's debut CD, including "You're Still You," which catapulted him into stardom when he sang it on TV's Ally McBeal. There are also two new songs--the ballad "Broken Vow," with Groban accompanied by Foster, and "For Always," with the orchestra conducted by John Williams, who wrote the song for the Steven Spielberg film A.I..

The 37-minute CD offers seven songs performed in the concert (including the two not on the previous CD, "Broken Vow" and "For Always"), plus "O Holy Night." The DVD has excellent picture and sound (PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS), interviews, and backstage footage, and the combination with the CD is an excellent value. In case you couldn't go to the concert . . . buy this CD/DVD set. This is a good overall product. The DVD is seamlessly pieced together from three concerts. The concerts were awesome due to the lights, musicians, song introductions, and of course - Josh's voice, presence, and energy.

This cd and dvd collection is valuable to anyone collecting Josh Groban music. The dvd is nicely done and gives a little insight into his family (parents and younger brother) with the special features. Nice, clean, family entertainment which is such a rarity nowadays. This young man's voice is exceptional - God has truly blessed him with such a voice, and to see him perform is a gift as well. My family truly enjoyed this bonus.

I have been a Josh Grobin fan since I heard "You Lift Me Up", and I have not been dissapointed with his CD's ever since. I was excited when I got this DVD and it definitely did not dissapoint. He chooses his songs wisely and each song in this concert is full of emotion and depth. The CD compliments the DVD well and is always a favorite. From "Broken Vow" to "Oh Holy Night" each song is sung by this master singer.

Frantic, Beautiful - A Must Own.......2007-07-09

I love this album. By the end of the introductory piece, you're not sure what to expect; a pretty, stagnant collection of songs from the guys who made Feel Good Lost? Then the second song, KC Accidental, begins.

An electric guitar is strummed quietly, deliberately, and for about ten seconds your suspicions seem to have been confirmed. Then the drums crash. The song's tempo and volume are immediately doubled; layers of guitar soar while the rhythm section plows ahead. After four measures of beautiful, breakneck instrumentation, the rest of the band crash like a wave, dissolving as the lone guitar continues strumming, louder but still deliberate. After four measures of this, the band returns at full speed. The push-and-pull between the single guitar and the rest of the band continues until finally it all breaks to make way for harmonizing strings and breathy, understated vocals.

You're not sure what you're hearing anymore, but one thing is clear - there is nothing stagnant about this music. It's as though Broken Social Scene takes for granted that the two aforementioned extremes of style should be considered a range within which a band may work. One song may explore its boundaries with feedback effects and a catchy, dominant bassline; the next may aspire to test the definition of cacophony with screeching guitars and vocals that are more shouted than sung. Yet another song croons the chorus "I'm still your fag" over pretty acoustic picking and brushed drums.

In short, this is one of the richest, frantically beautiful albums I own, and I recommend it to anyone. I promise that there will be something on this album for you to enjoy - for me, it's the whole thing.

So much yet so little.......2007-04-23

I grew up with The Police so take my opinion with a grain of salt but what I've heard of this album sums up what seems so wrong with this incarnation of indie rock. Too many possibilities for bands - all the effects and sub-syles replace what songwriting might be in there - they hit the Dinosaur-Jr style uptempos, grandiose strings / pianos build-ups, and psuedo-trip-hop cool-outs. On "Looks just like the Sun" a loopy, funky snare beat, acoustic guitar for mellowness and self-assured but weak vocals does not make a good song for me. The vocals just never make it beyond a vapid, quaalude style. The band reminds us their sweet studio also came with a banjo, a Rhodes piano, a real piano, and amps to mimic any guitar sound out there. I actually liked "Almost Crimes" and from another album "Hotel" and "7/4". But all in all this is well-played music that seems empty. I like overdubs and soundeffects just not the motives behind their use, and, well, overuse.

1.) Arrangements relies too much on effects, not musically challenging or that interesting.
2.) Background ambient instrumentals are to imposing, they over power the main structure.
3.) Lyrically unsound and ridiculous.

You Forgot It In People.......2007-01-20

Broken Social Scene's trivial debut pastiche, "Feel Good Lost," gave no indication of the heights they would scale on "You Forgot It In People." Consisting of an expanded 12-member lineup culled from Montreal's experimental music sector, Broken Social Scene broke out of the gates with an exquisite pop gem whose plethora of smaller gems could have (and should have) topped the Billboard pop charts. It's full of contradictions--breezy yet dense, poppy yet challenging, intimate yet absolutely huge--but BSS make it all look easy, especially considering the multitudinous personnel involved. In fact, it flows out of the speakers so smoothly that it's difficult to believe that some of the band members had never written a four-minute song in their whole lives. We could have used something this vivacious, intelligent and easygoing five years prior, when grunge music was reaching its lowest introverted depths, but if Broken Social Scene had to flounder awhile in order to arrive here, so be it. And darn if "Cause=Time" isn't the best pop song I've heard since Junior High.

One of the best albums of all time (believe it!).......2006-09-17

These guys make creating incredible rock music appear easy. There's something incredibly natural about this album, and yet it feels wholly original. The songs are emotionally powerful and very well written, identifiying this as a standard indie rock album among the ranks of The Arcade Fire or Wolf Parade, but it also has a sense of groove and musicality to it that identifies it with almost a jazz/funk/jam-band aesthetic. I in no way mean to mislead people by making a connection between this CD and these other genres, because the sound of the album really has little to do with jazz, funk, or jam-bands, but it does demonstrate the power of this album and the skill of the musicians that they are able to strike a balance between a sense music-for-music's sake (as in tight grooves and great musicianship), which is primarly a concept associate with jazz, and concise, emotionally-loaded, structured songs that give this CD the strength of the indie rock albums we all know and love. This CD is enthralling, soft and gentle as a whisper, emotoinal, powerful, dreamy, and groovy. Its also remarkably consistant. What a f@#$ing great album!

A great collection of klezmer favorites!.......2006-09-30

Premiere violinist Itzhak Perlman is joined live in concert by four premiere klezmer groups: Brave Old World, The Klezmatics, Andy Statman, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Vibrant, poignant and distinctly old-world, klezmer is the musical style that developed among Eastern European Jews. Featuring the soulful fire of violin, clarinet, accordion, mandolin and vocal leads, accompanied by cimbalom (a hammered-dulcimer), piano, drums. There are a few soulful slow tunes mixed in amongst the fiery dances, but most of the selections on "Live in the Fiddler's House" are fun and up tempo, full of the instrumental virtuosity one would expect both of this genre, and of a concert violinist of Itzhak Perlman caliber. Klezmer is some of the world's best good-time music, right up there with Irish jigs, Cajun two-steps and country banjo pickin'. But it's not all sweetness and light; inherent in the mournful, minor mode of this traditional music is blend of opposites--both the sorrow of persecution and defiant sense of fun-in-the-moment inherent of a culture displaced, trying to maintain its identity in an ever-changing and often hostile world. And therein lies klezmer's appeal to the soul. For more great Jewish music, try any of the separate releases by Brave Old World, The Klezmatics, Andy Statman and his band, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. You might also enjoy "The Hidden Gate: Jewish Music Around the World," the traditional Sephardic music of the group Voice of the Turtle, and the unplugged world fusion of Basya Schechter and Pharoah's Daughter in "Out of the Reeds."

Best Klezmer album.......2004-11-16

To me, this is the best klezmer album I've ever listened to (and I have quite a few). And it's a live album. Although it's a kind of live version of "In the Fiddler's House", the repertoire is not the same (they only share one or two songs). The bands accompanying Itzhak Perlman are at their best (they are the best klezmer performers!). I prefer, personally, Andy Statman's clarinet and mandolin (Andy's Ride and Meron Nign/In the Sukke are my favorites); then there are great moments with Brave Old World (Doina Naftule and A Hora mit Branfn are beautiful pieces) and the Klezmatics, of course. The 12 minute finale is an absolute well crafted medley, under Klezmer Conservatory Band's leader, Hankus Netsky. I did'n want it to end.
I don't like at all the women voices of Klezmer Conservatory Band, although the instrumental pieces (like Khosidl) are amazing.
There is not a second in this album which is not top klezmer.

For people who are into Klezmer music this is the finest C.D.! For Klezmer music lovers, this is a masterpiece.

Solid Christian Rock.......2007-07-09

This is a quality collection of Christian rock. This group has a very good sound and features lyrics that are clearly Christian.

They had a tough act to follow from their first album. Their best single from their debut, 'Filled With Your Glory', is clearly an inspired tune. This CD has several very good songs as well. Some of my favorites on this album include the following: 'Everything Is Beautiful', 'My Generation', and 'The Hand That Holds The World'.

If you have not heard this group before, this CD is a pretty good bet. If you are going to buy it, I would at least recommend getting a digital download of 'Filled With Your Glory'. That song is the Starfield essential. The tracks here would be pretty good to go along with it though.

I never heard this--it was bought for my sister. But she went on and on of how she loves this CD. If you like the newer style of rock with a genuine spirit towards God within it, you may really like this one.

Starfield "Beauty in the Broken" is solid .......2007-01-28

On my initial listening of these cd, I think I would have given it 3-4 stars, but as I took it in more and the lyrics, I realized what a solid release this is, not just musically but in the message.

The whole release is true to its title, with the songs focusing on the reality of brokenness and the need for God's grace.

"Son of God" is a simple but heartfelt worship that dovetails well into their hit, "Everything is Beautiful," which carries the message that even when things are falling apart, it is the fact that "Sweetly, You release me from the weight of what I've done" that provides the thrust of the song's upbeat emphasis. "Captivate," "Unashamed," "Love is the Reversal," "Obsession" and "Shipwreck" also carry this message of the beauty of being broken when one can see the reality of the God who sees their brokenness, but covers them with His grace. And finally, the "Hand that Holds the World," "Great is the Lord," and "Glorious One" all cap off a release that is obviously intentional, consistent and worshipful in it's content.

Musically, this is a solid release. Lyrically, it is a 5+. Unlike a prior review, I would agree with others saying that it is hard not to see the God of the Bible described clearly here--our being "messed up" in light of His greatness, but His love and favor that help us draw to Him "unashamed."

awesome music.......2007-01-23

I dont get how people are criticising this band. I went to Resurrection 2007 and saw the band preform live and was blown away. The brothers can really play and the lyrics are awesome and catchy. Lines like "I want to hold the hand that holds the world" and "shipwrecked on Gods shore" show the bands love and respect for god and heaven. I coughed up all my money to buy a cd for $15 and it was worth every penny. If you like christian music with good lyrics, well played music, and that has goood people in the band, the next time you are in walmart pick up Starfields "Beauty in the Broken."

Stern's out-of-nowhere debut epic is quite a formidable listen. It's like a musical treadmill, this one. Stern is the most apt candidate for guitarist of the year this side of Mike Barr (who obliterated The Urban Lounge for those with kind of normal expectations when he opened for Gang Gang Dance this month). Listening to this female shredder is truly an endurance test. That may be a bit misleading because Stern has some super catchy, truly accessible tracks here on Broken Arm. It's just that I can't even imagine how some of these guitar lines are possibly being played by a human and there is no letting up through the entire album. Seems fitting that the drumming on the album is completed by none other than Hella mega-drummer Zach Hill (also a Mike Barr collaborator along with everyone else in the world besides you). This is the best pop/rock record set too alien guitar metal in the entire world. I'm not sure how to let you know why you should listen to this. I could reference Deerhoof or maybe the Ladies or something. Either way, In Advance of the Broken Arm will not disappoint and here is a guarantee that you will not want to try out these songs on Guitar Hero (unless your name is Bjorn Turoque). Now let me get some rest because I think that the live version of these songs might give me a heart attack tonight if I'm well rested.

i read the reviews in the ny times and washington post and ordered this album.. the more i listened the more i liked it.the songs stayed with me all day..i have HEALER in my mind now. marnie looks so petite it is hard to imagine that she is such a guitar heroine. her music is strange and compelling..her fingerpicking and tapping is a breathtaking barage of notes and colors.there are offhand references to the likes of plato and rimbaud and a spellbinding and surrealistic tribute to glenn goulds solitude trilogy of radio documentaries. marnies music is the intersection between hendrix and highbrow. the drums of zack hill are the cherry on the top.

Marnie Stern is a woman playing horribly detailed guitar shreddery. Actually, a gorgeous woman.

Moving past that, this is the kind of creativity of which music needs as much as it can get. I read that Marnie basically controls everything herself through to production (excepting drums, which are owed to the genius of Zach Hill). Well, that's pretty much what it sounds like: one person overflowing with interesting musical ideas gives us a peek into her brain. As soon as the disc starts she's yelling about being a "vibrational match", and then the finger-tapping and pitch-shifting begin.

This record suffers a little in the same way many solo artists do: a little bit unfocused or obtuse; maybe some of it could have been cut and refined a little more if more people had been part of the process. But then on the other hand I would infinitely prefer this to something that might get watered down. That's why I still give it five stars.

That and the incredible playing. I mean, Zach Hill (the drummer) has played with Spencer Seim in Hella for years and this stuff is on par. She multi-tracks parts and uses effects and her voice. It's immersive.

That and the inventiveness of it all. Listening to this is like reading a good book of poetry. Not every poem is perfect but you feel a relationship to the poet.

And then there's the sex appeal.

Everything about Bryn Terfel is over-life-size: his physique, his personality, his breath-control, and of course his extraordinarily beautiful voice. This recording displays his stunning vocalism and versatility to full advantage, but its title belies its content. Alhough it does include some simple pieces, the execution is fussy, overdone, and calculated for maximum external effect. The program ranges from Mozart, Pergolesi and pseudo-Bach to Sondheim in arrangements that are pure Hollywood, complete with throbbing strings and rolling drums, often destroying the spirit as well as the letter of the original compositions. It begins with Mozart's heavenly "Ave verum" arranged for baritone solo and chorus, frustratingly cut off after a few phrases (another setting of the same text by Karl Jenkins, written for Terfel, is more satisfying, being complete and original). The splendid baritone Simon Keenlyside joins him here as well as in the opening number of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater;" originally for soprano and alto, this must be the baritones' revenge on female singers who usurp songs written for men, like Schubert's and Schumann's cycles. Franck's "Panis angelicus" also inexplicably becomes a duet; unfortunately, Terfel's and tenor Aled Jones' voices do not match. Bach-Gounod's popular "Ave Maria" is all swells and exaggerations. The rest of the program consists of folksongs, hymns, show and film tunes, inflated to operatic proportions and generally ending in a fade-out or a flourish. Even the title song is anything but simple. This record is not for purists who like their music performed the way the composer wrote it, but aficionados of great singing will love it. --Edith Eisler

Bryn Terfel has a beautiful voice. Listening to him is very pleasant and definitely something to look forward to. I read a review saying he would replace tenor Pavroti. However, I believe that Mr. Terfel is a Baritone and not a Tenor. That does not detract from the fact that he should be considered one of the world's top male singers. His voice is truly impressive. This CD by Bryn Terfel is one from our collection that is outstanding and a favorite.

Sorry, I think this guy is one of the most overrated singers out there today. He always sounds like he is singing holding his nose shut. VERY nasal sounding.

If you want to listen to an incredibly beautiful voice, buy one of Josh Groban's CD's--you won't regret it! He has the voice of the century!

Excellent selection of music. It covers many different types. My wife likes being able to hear the words with out instruments drowning out the vocals. I find it relaxing and many of the songs are familiar and very well done.

Simply superb. I don't know what our local (Wash DC) paper was talking about when they said Deep River was the weakest link. I was enthralled from beginning to end. I have had the pleasure of hearing Bryn Terfel live in recital at the Kennedy Center. I can assure you that his voice has only improved with age. He was wonderful then and is spectacular now!

A Heartfelt Offering Reminiscent of An Earlier Era.......2006-02-15

Bryn Terfel harkens back to earlier American operatic stars such as Richard Tucker and Robert Merrill who crossed grenres to satisfy their unquenchable need to sing any and all songs that moved them to an appreciative public. These great singers all had their origins singing sacred music from their respective religions and learned to lay their considerable talents before the altar of the simple inspirational song.

This recording is wonderful on many levels. The selections are an unusual mixture of classical sacred music, spirituals, hymns, Lieder, Austrian Christmas and Gaelic songs, musical numbers and movie theme songs harmoniously combined to touch the soul of the listener in a gentle ebb and flow of devotion, intensity and tenderness. All of these songs are beautiful in and of themselves and in his hands, we experience them anew.

Bryn Terfel sings with the commitment necessary to make the awesome challenge of simplicity look easy. To my way of thinking, he is the most communicative and articulate singer today, bar none. He is a poet who savors the sound, feeling and meaning of each and every word and marries it uniquely and faithfully to the music. He transports the listener into the life of a song and transfixes us each and every moment. His enormous talent is not overwhelming or distractive and is inextricably and wholly intertwined with the music. This is greatness and it is very, very rare today.

I like the inclusion of the choir in several of the numbers as it reflects on the nature and context of the songs. I am less fond of the selections with the guest soloists as I feel they do not match his ability to "get inside" a song. The orchestra and orchestations are sensitive and enhancing.

This recording is simply wonderful and should have a broad appeal. It will move and inspire the believer, satisfy and fulfill the otherwise spiritual, calm the troubled and renew a flagging soul.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.
