Ever wonder what happened to Buffalo Tom, the seminal Boston trio whose early-'90s songs were splashed about alternative radio and MTV? They're back, and one spin of their first record since 1998's Smitten gives the impression that they never left and that a decade has gone by faster than a Tom Maginnis drumroll. The melodies still rumble with elegance. The choruses are instantly unforgettable. And the band's original members--Maginnis, Bill Janovitz (guitar/vocals), and Chris Colbourn (bass/vocals)--remain intact and chillingly in synch. While it might be apropos to say they have matured with age, as all three have seen 40 pass them by, the angst and innocence of these 13 songs could easily have come blasting out of 1992. Rockers "September Shirt," "Bottom of the Rain," and "Good Girl" surely entice, but it's the power-poppiness of "Renovating" and "CC and Callas" (both sung by the underrated Colbourn) that drift back to the band's staples like "Taillights Fade" and "Mineral." Add to that canon the radiant melody of "You'll Never Catch Him," where Janovitz's gravelly tenor complements a radiant hook that, together, recapture the brilliance of this essential American band. --Scott Holter

Strong return for BT.......2007-07-13
This is a band that has had strong effort after strong effort in its long musical career. It is quite mind boggling why this band never "made it" (pros and cons of "making it" not to be debated).
Three Easy Pieces is everything a Buffalo Tom album should be, if you are a fan of thier poppier and mellower albums. Bill Janovitz and Chris Colbourn's vocals and lyrics are as catchy as ever. Lost Downtown and Throw are classic BT work that you'll find yourself singing to yourself or outloud.
Long time fans should enjoy this one as much as I did and newer listeners should give it a whirl....it's worth hearing the complete work rather than a download of just a few tracks.

another waste of time reunion just like Dinosaur Jr's. just like J Mascis And The Fog's Free So Free was a better album than Beyond, Bill Janovitz And Crown Victoria's Fireworks On TV was a much better album than this.
Worth the wait.......2007-07-11
Three Easy Pieces sounds exactly like what you would hope a new Buffalo Tom album would sound like. Though it's reminiscent of the band's earlier work, it continues the steady maturity the group has displayed on its progression of albums. This growing maturity, however, does not require sacrificing hook-laden songs that reverberate in your brain long after they have stopped playing.

Only a handful of bands have made a greater impact with fewer recordings than the short-lived Buffalo Springfield. Their history is told in the titles of their three albums: 1967's eponymous debut was followed by the peak-performance Again later that year, which was followed by 1968's Last Time Around. While their entire recorded career encompasses a mere two years, the Stephen Stills-Neil Young-Richie Furay-led quintet produced a number of '60s rock classics. Stills chipped in "For What It's Worth" and "Bluebird"; Furay's "Kind Woman" is one of the touchstones of country-rock; and Young fired off the likes of the raucous "Mr. Soul," the gentle "I Am a Child," the ambitious "Broken Arrow," and the breathtakingly pretty "Expecting to Fly." They're all on this 12-song overview, a suitable option for anyone who isn't up to stocking up on the entire catalog. --Steven Stolder

WITH ALL THE GREAT VOCALS ON THIS, YOU CAN'T GO WRONG. IT IS JUST A CLASSIC.
THE LEGEND OF BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD LIVES ON WITH SOME OF ROCK'S GREATEST ANTHEMS EVER........2007-04-16
I will be writing a review on the legendary masterpiece compilation album entitled "RETROSPECTIVE - THE BEST OF BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD" by one of Rock's all-time greatest legendary bands ever. I give you one of America's pride and joy's, BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD. This legendary compilation album was originally released in 1969 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the ATCO Records label in association and division of Atlantic Records which is a Warner Communications Company. This compilation album would see its first release on Compact Disc in the late 80's. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for recording some of Rock's most legendary sacred anthems ever. When Stephen Stills met up and joined forces with Neil Young, Richie Furay, Dewey Martin and Bruce Palmer, later replaced by Jim Messina, BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD would be born and a great multi-talented group would soon be a mega force to be dealt with. Although BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD only lasted a mere two years, the band would record only three albums and numerous hit singles. BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD contributed and accomplished so much in a short period of time that the band can never be denied the amount of great Rock anthems that were recorded in that short two year span. "RETROSPECTIVE - THE BEST OF BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD" is the result of the many great hit songs that the band recorded during their two year reign. In my opinion, this legendary masterpiece compilation album is without a doubt, a definite true testament of five extremely talented musical masterminds and is a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.
It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. This legendary masterpiece compilation album begins with one of the all-time greatest Rock anthems to ever document the Vietnam War, "For What It's Worth," the breathtaking Rocker "Mr. Soul," the slow and smooth sounding "Sit Down, I Think I Love You," the slow soothing "Kind Woman," the beautiful uplifting "Bluebird," the beautiful heartfelt "On The Way Home," the incredible beautiful sounding "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing," the blistering half live and half studio version of Neil Young's "Broken Arrow," the beautifully well arranged mild number "Rock And Roll Woman," the encouraging Country Rocker "I Am A Child," another great Country Rocker entitled "Go And Say Goodbye" and the the slow and beautifully orchestrated song "Expecting To Fly." May I also add that this legendary group mainly comprising of the talented mega-star lineup of Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Jim Messina contributed some of Rock's most beautiful musical arrangements while including and containing some of the most powerful lyrics ever.
Overall, this is one hell of a greatest hits compilation album worth seeking further research into and checking out especially if you are a hardcore diehard BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD fan or a devout music historian or collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not familiar with the sound and music of BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD but have to write a book report in U.S. History on Rock anthems during the Vietnam War in the 60's and early 70's, this album is definitely for you.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary masterpiece compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This greatest hits treasure album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great compilation album that no hardcore music fanatic or devout music historian or collector would want to be without. Please buy this album, you'll be glad that you did. You can research and purchase all of BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD'S catalog collection either through Amazon com or your local Borders books and music store.
In closing, as I stressed earlier in this review, BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD would only last a mere two years. However, three of the band's legendary members would move on to bigger green pastures and greater things which would only add more fuel to the BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD storied legend and legacy. Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Jim Messina would not only have successful solo careers, but would enjoy being in other bands as well. Stephen Stills and later Neil Young would become part of the legendary band CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG while Jim Messina would enjoy success as part of a dual act in the band Loggins and Messina with Kenny Loggins. With all of the great albums that these combined legendary bands have recorded, their roots and influence while in BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD is fully intact and can never be denied. BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD has forever left their mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you Stephen, Neil, Richie, Dewey, Bruce and Jim. Thanks for the great memories. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD FOREVER. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
Good, but needs an update.......2007-04-10
Buffalo Springfield only had one big hit "For What its Worth" but their influence was felt beyond their impact on the charts or the sales of the few albums they released. They helped keep the folk/coutry-rock movement moving and launched the careers of Stephen Stills and Neil Young. This is a good overview of their brief career, but it is just a song-for-song reissue of the vinyl LP. They could put twice as many songs on a CD. It is time for an update with some bonus tracks or an all new release.
Unique tunes that will stick with you.......2007-03-19
The seminal group that produced Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Richie Furay and Jim Messina. This CD shows all the different flavors the members contributed to making Buffalo Springfield songs unique and compositions that you'll want to listen to over and over again (my personal favorite is "Broken Arrow"). "Mr. Soul" and "For What It's Worth" notable radio hits on this CD. Take a trial listen--you might be surprised. Once you've heard the songs a few times you'll want to hear them over again. Another one of my albums that was a favorite in late '60's & early '70's before album wore out!
ANOTHER 60's "GREAT GROUP".......2007-01-10
The group didn't last long....but their impact with last forever!! There was just too much talent in this group- i.e. Steven Stills, Neil Young,Bruce Palmer (later replaced by Jim Messina) and Dewey Martin & Richie Furay... A rich collection of harmony, & the songs that were compliled for this "Retrospective" is AWESOME!! Try it...you'll LOVE IT!! ENJOY!! (As I did...my son too!!)

Here's where Stephen Stills and Neil Young's on-and-off partnership fell apart for the first time. The liner notes to BS's debut album had announced, "Steve is the leader, but we all are" and described Neil Young as "hot and cold," which in retrospect seems like a warning. Young appears to have at least one foot out the door already, the ambitious "Broken Arrow" and "Expecting to Fly" clearly pointing toward a solo career. And for all the timeless excellence of Young's "Mr. Soul," it's Stills's "Bluebird" that defines Buffalo Springfield Again, much as his "For What It's Worth" defined its predecessor. In one song, the group demonstrates astonishing versatility (from rock to folk to bluegrass), without the saccharine touches that mar Stills's post-Springfield work. But for all their considerable recorded achievements, Buffalo Springfield always felt like a band that never reached its potential. --David Wolf

Just about perfect.......2007-07-15
This album is worth every cent. The songwriting, arrangements, vocals, playing, production.....all just superb.
It's too bad all of the members of Buffalo Springfield didn't put their next respecitve projects on hold to make
a few more records. While this album only clocks in at 34 minutes it's not fair to compare this to other masterpieces from the 60's, but if it had been another 10 minutes on the level of the rest of what's here, it would be right up there with Sgt. Peppers, Pet Sounds, or Blonde on Blonde......this is really that good.
Buffalo Springfield Again or for the first time in your collection!.......2007-06-03
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I am frequently asked to write reviews and discuss 60's and 70's rock recordings.
"Buffalo Springfield Again" took elements of folk, rock, and country, placed them in the blender and saw prodigious results.
Anybody not sure of this can ask the music community what they thought of the release. The progressive rock band "Yes" does an incredible version of "Everydays" on their second album "Time And A Word."
The lyrics to "Mr. Soul" are so spectacular that you may not make it through the song without playing it over. As the guitar pays homage to the Stones "Satisfaction" the lyrics will floor you.
The diversity shown in tracks such as "Expecting To Fly", "Bluebird", "Rock & Roll Woman", and "Broken Arrow" will satisfy any fan of the great era of rock and roll.
Buffalo Springfield seemed to get the accolades years after the break-up and while it should have come from day one, it does solidify the timelessness of their sounds.
Enjoy the disc and be well,
Craig Fenton

one of the great albums of the 1960's.......2007-03-21
bookended by a pair of neil young classics ("mr soul" and "broken arrow"), this is a stunning album, one of the very best that was american made in the 60's. this is such an ambitious piece of work. there is country-rock (a child's claim to fame), jazz-tinges (on "everydays"), a gorgeous ballad with heavenly strings (expecting to fly), and soul music with horns & all (good time boy). "bluebird" is one of the strongest melodies here, with great electric & acoustic guitar workouts and some banjo picking that takes the song on out. "rock & roll woman" is also a fabulous melody with electric & acoustic guitar textures. catchy harmonies too. "hung upside down" sports more great electric guitar work, and is a fine stephen stills composition. it is the closing track "broken arrow," however, that is the real highwire act of a song here. six minutes and thirteen seconds of supreme musical ambition that works wonders. the song is a great neil young vocal with a fantastic arrangement of strings with circus sounds and jazz touches included. one of my favorite song compositions of the 60's. the whole album is magic. everyone should have a copy of this masterpiece.
Excellent Remaster.......2007-03-17
It is not advertised much, but look for this CD as a remaster - the sound is much improved and excellent. The back of the CD states HDCD and "Remastered from Original Source Tapes" Its still 9.99, so either get this new or used from a seller that assures it is the remastered version. This has some of Neil's best songs and with one exception, all the tracks are excellent.
Loverly.......2007-03-09
Why did you guys break up!? And don't give me that Yoko Ono lala. Although maybe that Eastman chick had something to do with it. No, wait. Wrong band. You guys were almost as good, tho.

Although Robert Preston and Barbara Cook put in stellar performances, it's the music that's the star of this hugely successful document of the 1958 Broadway smash. Written entirely by Meredith Willson, it drew from memories of his childhood in a small Midwestern town. Preston plays a traveling salesman/con artist, while Cook is the dull spinster "Marian the Librarian," whose love for Preston's character makes her come alive. "Seventy-Six Trombones" has become a marching band standard, while "Ya Got Trouble" (featuring dizzying fast-talk from Preston) and "'Til There Was You" (with a gorgeous vocal from Cook) remain well known even among those who have never seen the show. The latter was also a favorite of the Beatles, who covered it on their first album. --Dawn Eden
Customer Reviews:
Music Man.......2007-02-09
The original cast recording brings back the memory of the live production I saw which will always be superior, in my opinion, to the movie version. However, the movie was one of the better "reproductions" of this genre.
One of This Country's Finest Musicals Beautifully Re-Mastered.......2006-11-23
THE MUSIC MAN opened on Broadway on December 19, 1957 to rave reviews from the critics, adulations from the captivated audiences, and the beginning of a long run. This wondrous musical is an 'opera' of sorts in that the piece is not a series of songs connected by the usual musical comedy spoken dialogue. Meredith Willson wrote the music and lyrics in such a way that there is not an extraneous note or word that doesn't contribute to the totality of the work.
Despite the multiple reincarnations of this brilliant show both on film and recording, none of them compares to this original cast. Imagine Barbara Cook (lithe, and new) as Marian the Librarian: Cook still reigns as one of our finest voices on the stage and cabaret rooms today. Robert Preston is not only rich in personality he also delivers the immensely complex patter songs with deft authority. And the Buffalo Bills add the multiple barbershop quartet numbers with authentic sound and professionalism.
This musical holds all of the joys and imaginations and longings that we all hold so dear in our memories of how things used to be - and it is so terrific to return to that stage of ecstasy again. This is a must own CD. Grady Harp, November 06
We need a new remaster, nonetheless.......2006-10-22
A very interesting photo on the liner booklet's back cover demonstrates the one real flaw in this otherwise classic recording: it shows Robert Preston at the album sessions singing at two mikes, a fat Neumann with a Capitol flag and a skinny one, probably an AKG. This can only mean Capitol recorded this in simultaneous mono and stereo takes. With all that knob twiddling the balance had to go off, a problem not entirely corrected by the reissue engineer Bob Norberg, whose remasterings of Ol' Blue's Capitol mono output have earned scorn from some Sinatraphiles for their slight fake echo and stereo effects. (He remastered just about every album in the Broadway Angel series; the monos all appear to have the echo and stereo.) I guess we should be happy to have this in any form at all given how the other majors turned it down. Capitol was late and indifferent to the cast album trade, and it only had three hits before making its monumental closing botch of "Follies." However the label approached it it's still a great and exciting score perfectly performed. Who could have imagined a hit musical with a barbershop quartet? And if only all women could sing like Barbara Cook! Who says you can have too much of a good thing?
With the show's fiftieth anniversary coming up (!) now would be a good time for a remaster. (I know, I know, I'm tired of paying repeatedly for the same product too, but this deserves it.) It should include a second disc with the 1959 Capitol documentary LP "And Then I Wrote 'The Music Man'", where Meredith Willson and his wife Rini detail the eight years of trials and rewrites behind the show. Nor would it hurt to have bonuses like Willson's original take on "Till There Was You" (called "Till I Met You," which Fran Warren evidently first sang on "The Big Show") or a few licensed pop balladeers of the day -- and maybe examples like the 70s jingle for the late lamented Oldsmobile ("Oh ho the new Oldsmobile is a -- comin' down the line...."). It must also include Willson's contentious JFK physical fitness tune "Chicken Fat", recorded about the time "The Music Man" was filmed and available only on oddball Web music sites, where Preston yells and grunts himself into an athletic -- passion. (I keep thinking Allan Sherman recorded a full version of his notorious parody "76 Sol Cohens", but I guess he didn't.) The whole thing should end with a live public-radio performance from 1980 or 1981 where Willson led the superb Detroit Concert Band in "76 Trombones" and "The Stars and Stripes Forever" -- an apt and brilliant finish.
No, I have not forgotten the Beatles, but I fear neither have their lawyers.
Accept no substitutes!.......2006-08-22
This the best version of "The Music Man" available, especially if you're looking for the Broadway cast. The performances here are all terrific, the recording and mastering are great, and the liner notes are informative and thorough. "The Music Man" is available in several other versions and forms, including other releases of the same original cast recording, but without the good mastering or liner notes found here. My wife and I, hoping to listen to this great show with our kids, first purchased other versions that were easier to find (e.g., on iTunes) and those were major disappointments. Buy this CD (Broadway Classics from Angel) and accept no substitutes.
Preston and Cook are the best ever.......2006-07-15
Yes, the film is a delight, and Shirley Jones is certainly good as Marian. But the original cast album of this wonderful musical remains the best version ever, mostly thanks to Barbara Cook, whose voice was and remains a miracle of rare device to listen to.
For years I thought I was the only person who was in love with her voice, wearing out vinyl LPs of this musical with replaying. Then, in the early 80s I saw Cook in a one woman show in London, and discovered I was part of a fanatical following! The other reviews here on Amazon confirm the truth: there is only one truly great Marian, Madam Librarian.
Watch the movie, which is a terrific adaptation of the stage show, go to professional and amateur revivals of the musical, but buy this recording of the score for repeated listening. There is nothing better.

Director Todd Haynes's celebration of the sex, drugs, and rock & roll of the British glam era of the early '70s, Velvet Goldmine, would be nothing without the music that inspired it. A few unusual absentees (no Bowie, Iggy Pop, or New York Dolls?), but folks such as Brian Eno, Roxy Music, Lou Reed, and T-Rex are represented. Several covers from the glam era are performed without much deviation by two supergroups: the Venus in Furs, featuring members of England's elite--Bernard Butler, and Thom Yorke of Radiohead; and Wylde Ratz, featuring Mark Arm of Mudhoney, Ron Asheton of the original Stooges, and Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth. Strongest are the originals submitted to the film: Shudder to Think tame their own experimental excesses to put forth two glam-worthy originals with "Hot One" and "Ballad of Maxwell Demon." Pulp deliver "We Are the Boys," which runs amuck with the dramatic stagepower of the finest glam. --Rob O'Connor

A Cosmic Aural Orgasm!.......2007-04-17
I fell in love with Velvet Goldmine the very first time I saw it - in large part thanks to this soundtrack. But when you look at the roster of names involved with this project - Michael Stipe, Brian Eno, Thurston Moore, Placebo, Thom Yorke of Radiohead - it should come as no surprise -greatness begets greatness!
There are really no weak songs on this soundtrack. Needle in the Camel's Eye is simply infectious - this song - which opens the movie - was as subtle as a slap in the face and immediately grabbed my attention. The closing song - Steve Harley's Make Me Smile - conveys the sheer joy and passion music can provide. And all of the songs in between are even better.
We are treated to some of the biggest names from the era including Roxy Music (the exuberance of Virginia Plain), T-Rex (a dreamy Diamond Meadows) and the genius that is Lou Reed (Satellite Of Love) - a song that even my six year old niece adores singing. She knows this whole soundtrack by heart!
I grew up listening to Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, Iggy and the Stooges and Bowie thanks to my older cousins. But I might have never listened to Roxy Music or T-Rex if it wasn't for this album. If you like the songs on this album - you'll probably love a lot of their music.
However, in my opinion, the two best songs on this album - hands down - are Ladytron - performed by The Venus in Furs - a sort of supergroup fronted by Thom Yorke and 20th Century Boy - covered by the brilliant juggernaut that is Placebo.
Ladytron is just a gorgeous number - a swoony almost psychedlic tune and Thom Yorke's voice is incredible as always as he sings - I use you, and I confuse you...
As for 20th Century Boy - this song isn't just the highlight of the soundtrack - it's also one of the highlights of the whole movie. Brian Molko's stage presence is phenomenal and whether you are listening to this song on CD or watching him perform it live in the movie - he sells this song completely with a sexy swagger to his singing.
Molko has frequently been called a ladyboy - and he possesses a physique that can only be described as petite - but believe me - listen to him perform this song once - watch him live in the movie - this ladyboy has got more cajones than most singers twice his size! And if you like this song - you should definitely check out the rest of Placebo's music. They are one of the most under appreciated and under rated bands in the world today.
Rounding out the soundtrack, Ewan McGregor channels Iggy Pop in T.V. Eye, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers proves that being a world class wanker doesn't prevent him from also being a fantastic singer. Rhys Meyers has a lovely voice and range which he utilizes briliantly in the songs Tumbling Down and Baby's On Fire.
The rest of the songs including Hot One, Ballad of Maxwell Demon, The Whole Shebang, 2HB, Personality Crisis, Bitter-Sweet, and We Are The Boys by Pulp are all solid numbers, sonically capturing the whole mood of that era in music. As I said, there are really NO weak songs on this soundtrack.
The only thing I was disappointed about was that they left out a couple other really good songs - Rhys Meyers lovely rendition of Sebastian - which is a shame - because he sings it beautifully - and Gary Glitter's uber cheezy/sleazy number Do You Wanna Touch Me?
This album is definitely worth every cent and it's one you will never grow tired of listening too. A must have for any person who has a genuine passion and appreciation for good music!
a wondrous album.......2006-08-20
this is the soundtrack that led me into the wonderful world of glam rock! it is outstanding and i could just play it again and again.... it is certainly one of the most brilliant albums out there and probably my favourite soundtrack of all time.
The best soundtrack album EVER - even if Bowie wasn't involved.......2006-08-12
Simply, this is the BEST soundtrack CD ever recorded, bar none, hands down, no contest. Why? On first...or millionth...listen, the entire album captures the film, the world, the era, the style, and the sound expertly, effortlessly - but it's not just an empty gesture or a slick impersonation, VG amplifies and expands the authentic glam vision to create something somehow more glam, deeper, more intense, more addictive, sexy, heartbreaking, uplifting, even dangerous - once you see the movie, and once you hear these songs, you'll play them over & over, come back to them year after year, and they'll become the fabric of your own life - or your imagined life, past, present, future, or even a fond, faded memory of what never was. The most jaw-dropping achievement of the album, aside from impeccable taste (Eno, Roxy Music, Lou Reed, T Rex, anyone?) is that since Todd Haynes didn't get permission from Bowie to use his own music, he went out and recruited the coolest rock icons and upstars to create songs that amazingly feel like they are long-lost nuggets circa 72/73, but were really made in 99 - it's not just playing dress up, it's redefining a whole musical and cultural era. This is Haynes' BEST film, and this is the BEST soundtrack. Sadly, as usual, the movie was a flop upon its original theatrical release - I recall going to see if on a rainy Saturday matinee on its first-weekend release, and there were only two people in the theater, me and the usher. No matter, this album is a real achievement, never to be repeated again, so savor it now.
Wow! I mean just wow!.......2005-12-18
Even if you don't want to watch the movie (and why wouldn't you) you have to buy this soundtrack. This is the soundtrack that proves that other soundtracks are merely prepackaged garbage. No soundtrack so captures an era and a mood as completely as this one (ok there's also the 24 Hour Party People soundtrack but that's IT!)
These songs are riveting, amazing, great. Twentieth Century Boy is worth the price alone. I want to find every version of this song (I heard a version in the Truman Show as well - a 50s rockabilly version) and play them on repeat. The movie did such a great job of capturing the 70s versions of Bowie and Iggy Pop, it'd almost be blasphemous for the soundtrack to fizzle. It doesn't fizzle. This is the CD that you wish Bowie would have put out (he's done great songs but he's also done mediocre ones) and this is the CD that you can play loud and play on repeat.
There's really not much more to say about it but the gushing joy of a fan.
Very uneven.......2005-10-16
I got this cd becasue one i am a fan of glam rock, it was a good price and i am a fan or radioehead. How can you have soundtrack that is about the glam rock scene of the 70s and not include bowie. All of the covers are not nearly as good as the originals. The only good songs are Virgina Plain and Satelite of Love and Camel in the eye but those are the original songs and i have those songs allready. The songs of Venus and Furs dispointed me it seem Thom was trying to sound like Bryan Ferry on them it would have been better if he just used his own voice. If you want a good glam rock soundtrack may i suggest Hedwig and The Angry inch most of the songs are sung by one singer who has a better voice then most of the rock singers out today. That soundtrack acutally does not sound like a soundtrack which i think is best i am not a big fan of various artist cds. I ended up selling it for more then i paid for it.

Although the Byrds receive more credit (and perhaps rightfully so), Buffalo Springfield, in some respects, were just as responsible for the country-rock and singer/songwriter explosion that continued through the full flight of the Eagles and later mutated into '90s neo-country. This 1966 debut reveals the precocious songwriting talents of both Neil Young and Stephen Stills; check out Stills's Beatlesque "Sit Down, I Think I Love You" and Young's weird (for '66!) but classic "Burned." Their next album, Again, is widely considered their best effort, but this is an excellent debut, made even stronger with the addition of their hit, the single-only "For What It's Worth." The CD offers both stereo and mono versions of each track. --Bill Holdship
Customer Reviews:
fine debut. .......2007-03-21
stephen stills "for what it's worth" is, of course, a classic song. "burned," neil young's strongest effort for this album, is another classic song. the rest of it is all very good. i would say that it does sound a bit dated, however;, and that this one is mostly for fanatics of 60's music. your average "artic monkeys" fan is not going to find this a good match for their musical sensiblities. better was on the way from buffalo springfield. their next album, "buffalo springfield again" is an all out rock masterpiece that everybody should own, whatever your age or inclinations.
Buffalo Springfield - self-titled (Atco).......2007-02-02
Originally saw the blessed light of day in 1967, some oldie fans may not realize that Buffalo Springfield actual had several full length albums out. Can't believe these guys had JUST one hit. Anyway, this twelve track self-titled CD reissue has several should - have / could - have - been hits as far as I'm concerned. Cuts like "Go And Say Goodbye", the Beatles - like "Sit Down I Think I Love You", "Everybody's Wrong", "Burned", the jamming bluesy "Leave" and "Pay The Price" (with it's catchy riffs) along with their sole hit "For What It's Worth" all make this disc a keeper. It's obvious this band was a heavy influence on later artists such as the Eagles, Gram Parsons, BoDeans and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Recommended.
For what its worth...they need a better producer.......2007-01-30
A very impressive set of songs here. The only thing that could of improved this record was a better production. The production here is horrible, you can't even make out what the great Bruce Palmer is doing on bass. IT's worth it for the talent and great set of songs.
Decent, but Again is far better.......2006-11-29
Okay, so For What It's Worth is, well... For What It's Worth. There's not much I can say to do the song justice. Needless to say, it's awesome. The problem is that nothing else on this record is - not even the Neil Young stuff (I'm a big Neil Young fan, which explains why I tend to center on his songs when I review Springfield). Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing and Flying on the Ground is Wrong are charming, and both hint at Neil's later talents. But both are ruined by Ritchie Furay vocals - I'm not a big Furay fan, but at least he didn't write anything. That leaves Stills to pick up the slack, and I'm afraid he does a slipshod job - I like Everybody's Wrong and Burned (not to mention For What It's Worth), but can't really get into Sit Down I Think I Love You; Go and Say Goodbye; or Do I Have to Come Right Out and Say It). The rest is standard-issue folk-pop, pleasant and not without its charms, but the casual fan (such as me) will probably feel vaguely ripped off if they buy this one.
"Steve is the leader, but we all are".......2006-08-01
Those who have an original vinyl copy of this album will remember the "liner notes," i.e. a collection of the various band members' favourite colours, favourite places, their zodiac signs and random thoughts (the comment about Stephen Stills showing up in his "profile"). When I began to delve into classic rock of the '60s in my teens (20 years too late, I have often lamented), this was one of the albums I picked up...yes, an actual LP. I used to have quite a collection of those, although it might not rival some...
In 1997, when the new remaster was released with the mono and stereo versions of the album put together on one CD, I rediscovered this album in all its glory. It's not perfect--what debut album is?--but it was pretty damned good for a first record (can't say that for all of them). The remaster featured the mono version Atco originally released in December of '66, which featured a different running order--"Leave" was track 3, side 1, and "Baby Don't Scold Me" appeared as track 5, side 2. The latter was a nice little song with Steve and Richie Furay sharing lead vocals, including an instrumental quote from the Beatles' "Day Tripper" (the familiar riff). And as the notes on the remaster indicate, mono was how the band intended this album: "We never had a chance at the stereo," they say, indicating that their producers (Charles Stone & Brian Green, IIRC) snapped up that chance for themselves; they proceeded to remix the album, removing "Baby Don't Scold Me" and replacing it with the band's big hit, "For What It's Worth," which became track 1, side 1, and "Leave" relegated to the position of track 5, side 2. That version, released as Atco SD33-200A in April of '67, is the one I bought some 20 years later on vinyl, and makes up the second half of the remastered CD.
The sound on both versions is much improved; the remaster is an HDCD (High Definition CD), with warmer sound than had been possible before in digital. Unfortunately, this CD is now out of print; the Buffalo Springfield Box Set, which Rhino released in 2001, rectified that by putting remastered versions of this album and Again, the band's more famous sophomore effort (and the one the critics like the best), together on the 4th disc in that set. That version of the first album includes the original mono running order, with "For What It's Worth" sandwiched in between the 2 albums as a bonus track.
What Rhino ought, IMO, to do this year, this being the 40th anniversary of Buffalo Springfield's forming, signing to Atlantic and recording/releasing their debut album, is remaster all 3 of the band's original studio albums, complete with bonus tracks from each LP's original studio sessions, especially since this is how classic albums are now being presented (Yes' Atlantic catalogue, Donovan's studio albums, still others too numerous to mention here). And maybe we can consider SACD remasters?

Excelente.......2007-07-03
Amo este show e amei o DVD. O detalhe da razão dos pingos d'água na capa é fantástico.
A banda é demais, o show foi ótimo e a produção do DVD idem.
O cd bônus é ótimo tb.
Lots of energy!.......2007-06-28
This DVD is a really great introduction to the live Goo experience! They've put out some great songs over the years, but the albums can only give you so much. To really appreciate Goo you've got to see them live and if you can't get tickets, this is the next best thing. They've got a really great energy and despite the rain, they give their all to the show.
These Guys Rock in the Best Way!.......2007-05-07
This is the kind of concert you want to sit back, get up, jump around and then sit back again...it rocks!
I LOVE THE GOO GOO DOLLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-01
OMG! I love these guys! They are so good! I mean so what? they changed record lables because they weren't getting nearly enough money from the success of "name". wouldn't you change? Thought so! i would think that if this collection was the original album versions instead of the live (which i actualy like better) versions, it would go platinum 32 times! If you wanna hear John say stuff like "oh [...] here we go" and "we're gonna keep going until this [...] stops", then listen to the cd, but if you wanna watch it with the hole family, watch the dvd. Oh nad also, if yo uever get the chance go to one of their concerts because there even better live!
The Ultimate Goo Goo Dolls CD! **********.......2006-10-01
I really love this Cd/Dvd. It really is a kind of greatest hits cd for the Goo Goo Dolls. It contains many great songs such as "Slide", "Black Balloon", and "Iris", just to name a few. The songs range from slow tempo to mid tempo to fast, and the band sounds great live...Johnny Rzeznik's deep and soothing voice along with everyone's fine playing to great lyrics and melodies make this a very enjoyable listen/watch. If you own only one Goo Goo Dolls cd, this should be the one. You really do get a wide variety of songs that span many albums and years. Why don't you give a listen to the song sampler on this site and decide for yourself...

One of America's seminal 1960s rock bands, Buffalo Springfield's brief career yielded just three studio albums before its various members splintered into a variety of successful solo career and new group endeavors (including Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Poco, and Loggins & Messina). In fact, one of its chief architects bolted before this, their last album, was even completed. Fortunately for both the band and their fans, Neil Young left behind a pair of pop gems--the band showcase "On the Way Home" and the country-tinged "I Am a Child." Stephen Stills largely picked up the slack in Young's absence, penning a slate of tunes as ambitious as they were eclectic (his "Questions" here eventually evolving into CSNY's "Carry On"), while Richie Furay weighs in with three tunes, including the clear Poco precursor "Kind Woman." A bit more pop-oriented than its predecessor, the often haunting Buffalo Springfield Again, but nearly as memorable. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Best time around for Steve.......2007-01-30
Steve improves on everything, guitar, production, songwriting. Possibly His best performed and produced Springfield songs are here. Four days Gone, Pretty Girl Why, Special Care, Uno Mundo and The better than CSNY original version of Questions.
Near-classic Coda from a Classic Band.......2007-01-06
This was the swan song of one of the most influential groups in the history of rock, country-rock, and Americana music. The primary members - Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Richie Furay - went on to found Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young as well as Poco, and Jim Messina later became half of Loggins and Messina. Legend has it that it was difficult to put together this last album due to bitter squabbling among the group members. And it is perhaps the "weakest" of their three albums, though there are some indispensable gems contained within. Richie Furay's "Kind Woman", for instance, is one of the prettiest country ballads ever written. Neil Young's two contributions, "On the Way Home" and "I Am a Child", are classics as well, the latter having the feel of a solo performance and shaping things to come for Neil. Three of Stephen Stills' songs, "Four Days Gone", "Special Care" and "Questions", are also worthy of classic status. ("Question" was later incorporated into CSN&Y's song "Carry On".) The rest of the twelve songs on this set are less memorable, but worth hearing to get the complete experience of the diversity of the band, as they even dabble in calypso and lounge-jazz stylings. It is interesting to note, too, that this is the only one of the three albums not represented in its entirety on the BS box set, so if you are a "completist", you will want to get this one. I think some enterprising label (Rhino?) could do justice to this great band by releasing a 2- or 3-CD set, which could include all three albums in their entirety, plus rare bonus and live tracks not included in the box set.
Last time was a good time.......2006-05-01
Forget about the discord and solo effort throwaway song claims. This is an album of adult sensibilities delivered with youthful enthusiasm. The songs are lovingly crafted and still resonate with me after almost 40 years. This album is a classic and a gem. Buffalo Springfield was a supergroup before that word was invented. I would give it four and a half stars.
An Uneven Affair!.......2006-03-25
Buffalo Springfield's last album is a somewhat uneven affair. Neil Young was out of the band before the album was finished, and he only contributes 2 and a half songs. Vocally he is only audible on the fine country-styled "I Am a Child". Young's opening track ( sung by Furay?) "On the Way Home" is another highlight.
With Young out, it was up to Steven Stills and Richie Furay to come up with new material. Stills is a fine songwriter, but some of his songs here sound a little uninspired. The light "Pretty Girl Why" is a pleasant classical Buffalo Springfield type song. "Special Care" ( the "heaviest" track on the album and "Questions" are both great recordings.
Richie Furay has penned two fine ( and two weak ) songs for the album. The catchy "Merry-Go-Round" is a fine song that may have had hit-potentials. His closing track "Kind Woman" is a strong country ballad - actually there is also a lot of "soul" in the song, and I would have loved to hear Otis Redding do a version.
The rest of the album is more or less throwaways. One is almost unlistenable ( the sirupy "The Hour of not Quite Rain")
But with at least 6 strong tracks this is a must have for any fan of Stills and Young.
Stills the One.......2006-02-24
Patched together by Jim Messina after the band had broken up, this is still worth tracking down for Stills' compositions, which dominate the set. "Special Care" smokes; the draft-dodger lament, "Four Days Gone," is powerful; and the hard-rockin' "Questions" does just that: it rocks harder than CSNY's version (they re-recorded it as the outro of "Carry On" on Deja Vu). Neil checks in with two tunes: the transcendent "I Am a Child" and "On the Way Home," which finds Richie Furay handling lead vocals. The weakest moment? The insipid "In the Hour of Not Quite Rain," which features lyrics penned by the winner of a radio contest.

Created against the backdrop of the American wasteland, Mighty Joe Moon introduces vast rock textures with traces of southern alternatwang. Layered with guitar, banjo, Dobro, cello, mandolin, accordion, harmonica, pump organ, tablas, and "acquired hunks of metal," the band reconfigures sound with rustic debauchery. The strident vocal work of singer-songwriter Grant Lee Phillips generates folk mythology and political commentary with a nod to disparate class distinctions. Recounting individualized stories, outland tracks such as "Demon Called Deception" portray personal struggles against manifest destiny, while tender ballads such as "Mockingbirds" and "Honey Don't Think" maintain the balance. Given its earnest overtones, the nature of the album is uplifting at its core as it lingers with emotional affinities that touch upon the notion of simple livelihood. --Lucas Hilbert
Customer Reviews:
Grant Lee's finest work.......2007-05-06
I can't say much that hasn't been said already, but I'm putting my two cents in because I really love this album. It does exactly what most country-rock albums try and fail to do: it takes you on an eerie, spacious, organic musical pilgrimage that is unearthly and yet distinctly and poignantly American. Band leader Grant Lee Phillips is a reluctantly modern man, homesick for the simple faith and rough-hewn nobility that were the ideals of the past, and yet he doesn't make the trite, overplayed claim that "things were better in the good old days." He knows that it isn't that simple, and his awareness is probably what makes the songs as sad, sweet and convincing as they are.
"Mighty Joe Moon" is a good place to start if you want to see what Grant Lee Buffalo is made of. Their other albums are all good, but I think this one incorporates everything that is great about them. It strikes a nice balance between the lo-fi ghostliness of their previous recordings and the rock and roll polish of their farewell, "Jubilee," and it showcases Grant Lee Phillips' excellent songwriting at a peak of richness and sensitivity.
outstanding record of time and art.......2006-12-07
What a great album, these guys put down a disc that first I thought "sounded like an album a few early American pioneers would make with modern and old instruments".
But let me tell you, it is much more than that. the album/cd art really sets the tone for this bunch of music, I can almost smell the woodsmoke and the cabin when I hear this music, the mountains and the wind are all around. Along with major feedback, reverb and serious lyrics.
oh yeah, it rocks too! truly, truly original! check out Grant's solo recordings as well.
Standout tracks:
"Honey Don't think"
"lone Star Song"
"Demon Called Deception" (song about Johnny Cash)
"MockingBirds"
"ROCK OF AGES"
Outstanding Album.......2006-11-10
I really can't explain why Grant Lee Buffalo wasn't a bigger success than they were. One almost never hears their songs on the radio and I don't personnally know anyone who knows anything about them. Yet this album is one of my all-time favorites (and I've had it since it came out in 1994 or '95), and it's got to be on SOME music reviewer's top 100 of all time. The songs, the musicianship, and the vocals are rich and artfully done. I'm not a musician or vocalist so I can't offer any knowledgable explanation on why this album is so good, it just is. If you enjoy soulful, yet sometimes edgy, "americana" and abhor corporate-manufactured teen-pop, buy this album.
A Magnificent Tapestry of Rock Folklore.......2006-05-19
I was first exposed to Grant Lee Buffalo at the tailend of 1994. I was working as an overnight deliveryman when I first heard the opening strains of "Mockingbirds" stir through the twilight: "Devastation at last, finally we meet". I was immediately entranced by the dirgelike strum of this tune and was compelled to seek out the whole album. I was not disappointed. Mighty Joe Moon serves as an excellent example of exquisite narrative rife with elegiac stirrings and haunting tales from the perspective of a true raconteur.
When lead singer Grant Lee Phillips sings of the many facets of Americana and the accompanying human condtion, one is transported to the worlds he creates in his song tapestry. Overall, Mighty Joe Moon is a breath of fresh air and uniquely qualifying in the pantheon of alt-rock that and highly worthy of exploring. All of the tracks are sterling and weave a synthesis of storytelling and nuance that captivate.
My faves are the outstanding "Mockingbirds", "Lone Star Song", "Honey Don't Think", "Demon Called Deception", and "Rock of Ages"...but all of the songs on here exemplary. Seek this out.
A real treat for the ears.......2006-03-31
This album is great because of its ability to give such a great vibe. It's part Americana without the neo-countrified feel, a few acoustic-and-vocals ballads, part swaggering rock. Each song easily manages to be good its own or fit well with its album-mates smoothly. This is the perfect record to put in the car on a road-trip (something I put to the test, with great results!), countryside sliding steadily by from the car-window. I found this quite remarkable, and being as I really don't like alot of miles on the road for too long, I thanked Grant Lee for having the ability to make it bearable..
I only regret that I caught wind of this band after they were put out to pasture. Anyone with a taste for great roots-type rock should really look into starting out with this album. I am a truly picky [...] when it comes to my music, but I will happily pass the word on about this disc. As of right now, there may not be much hope of hearing Grant Lee Buffalo play these songs live, but this brilliant work is definitely worth a go!

Join the Herd!.......2007-01-08
I first bought Positive Friction as an Amazon recommendation. After a first listen, I decided it was a mistake and it went to the basement of my ipod. For some reason, I had an urge months later to pull it back up . . . and fell in love with it--every song on it. They have a folkie-country-rock sound that is difficult to plug into a specific category. Life's a Ride is my second and I warmed up to it immediately. Some excellent strong songs on it with the strong vocals, excellent lyics, and rhythms being the best for me. I urge everyone to give it a few listens before making a judgement--their sound is offbeat enough that it might take a few to warm up to them. Once you get it--you will realize how hot a band they are!
Donna Still Rocks.......2005-06-02
Even with the loss of rhythm guitarist Jim Miller, Donna and company still manage to kick out the jams in the way that only they can. Songs like "Blue Skies" and "Greatest Love" show that they have not lost that feel-good vibe, while "Deeds of a Few" and "Love and Gasoline" showcase the considerable songwriting ablility of Jeb and Tara respectively. They just keep getting better; anyone who follows them on tour knows what I'm talking about.

People struggle with a classification for Donna the Buffalo, so here goes mine: An eclectic jam band that writes excellent songs and is fun for the whole family. I "discovered" Donna the Buffalo about three years ago when I stumbled across a review of a show on the internet. I have been a great fan ever since and my enthusiasm for them spread to my wife and two daughters. Donna the Buffalo introduced me to musical forms that I was not real aware of (old time music and zydeco) and now love, as well as some musical instruments you don't normally hear in a rock band (accordion, fiddle, rubboard). "Life's a Ride" was eagerly anticipated by Donna fans and does not disappoint. The songs are excellent but there is a lack of an extended jam that you would hear at a live show. That's really nit-picking though because I love the album. My favorites are "Blue Skies", "Rockin' Horse", "Life's a Ride", and "Everyday". Check out the album, but see them live if you want a real treat, they particularly shine in the summer festival season.
Life's a Dance Party!.......2005-04-27
For the last twenty years or so, Donna the Buffalo has been playing some of the most sincere, heartfelt, and giddy music to come out of any genre. And that's not to say that they have a one particular genre of their own: quite the contrary - not even the most rigid categorist could pigeonhole this Trumansburg, N.Y. sextet. Joyfully, they make us dance to the sounds of rock-a-billy, zydeco, reggae, roots, bluegrass, blues, and countless others.
I grew up in the Fingerlakes region of Upstate New York, in the land where Donna the Buffalo formed and quickly gained legions of faithful back in the mid-eighties: a time when most folks were chanting the mantra "me, me, me" - Donna the Buffalo started making music that said - and made everyone else say - "us, us, us." Their music is communalistic and loving, but far from corny idealism. And weather they are playing for a small crowd of a few hundred, or a large festival of many thoousands, it always feels like a mid-summer backyard get together with your closest friends.
Donna's newest album, "Life's a Ride", is a joyous continuation of what all of us Donna fans - old and new - have been enchanted by for years: shameless positivity, hypnotizing groove, and the uplifting of the human spirit. Try not to grin and abandon all pretense during "Way Back When" or "Blue Sky" - or the Zydeco of "Walk on Water". On the mellow side, "Rockin' Horse" is sure to be a new Jeb Puryear classic.
If you're new to Donna, you can't go wrong starting with any of their CD's (although I particularly reccomend Live from the American Ballroom). They are all perfect examples of the love and joy that this band exists to fill us with.
