Gulliver
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Do you remember Gulliver? For those of you still in the dark, let us run another name by ya: Daryl Hall! That's rightwe're releasing the first-ever recording to feature the future superstar, here found co-leading a band not with John Oates but with the noted songwriter Tim Moore. Together they recorded this record at Sigma Sound, the Philly home of Gamble & Huff, and you'll definitely find hints of the blue-eyed soul to come, along with a pop sensibility more in tune with the decade ahead than the turbulent time (1969) this record was recorded for Elektra. A collector-friendly Collectors' Choice Music exclusive!

This is a compendium of pieces drawn from Andrew Manze's recordings past, present, and projected. It includes single movements, groups of movements, and complete works, some unaccompanied, some with one or two supporting instruments, some with the ensemble Romanesca, some with the Academy of Ancient Music, of which Manze is co-director and concertmaster. The selections range from intimate chamber music to brilliant bravura pieces and are well designed to whet the listener's appetite to hear the complete records. They also display Manze's versatility, virtuosity, improvisatory imagination, expressiveness, and communicative power, which have propelled him to the top rank of Baroque violinists. He succeeds in combining rigorous scholarship with adventurous spontaneity, passionate involvement and a sense of humor--all of which are also in evidence in his erudite but entertaining program notes.
Naturally, the most substantial pieces on the program tend to be especially impressive. Vivaldi's Concerto "La tempesta di Mare" is truly tempestuous, with extraordinarily daring harmonies and modulations. Manze's transcription and performance of a famous Bach Toccata and Fugue for organ creates the amazing illusion of an original unaccompanied violin composition. And, taken from Manze's recording with the Academy of Ancient Music, "La Follia," one of 12 Corelli Sonatas orchestrated by Geminiani as Concerti Grossi, is enormously exciting. Also noteworthy are selections by Uccellini and Marini performed with Romanesca, some movements from Bach and Handel sonatas, and part of Tartini's "La Sonata del Diavolo", better known as the "Devil's Trill Sonata," played unaccompanied with diabolical freedom and virtuosity. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
A rich introduction to a top Baroque specialist.......2005-11-15
Andrew Manze is a Cambridge-educated, early-music scholar, an internationally-famous period violinist, an accomplished chamber musician and director of the prestigious Academy of Ancient Music. His discography is vast - specializing in the early to late Baroque and with a strong affinity to the more unusual, 'quirky' Baroque sonatas such as those by Tartini, Schmelzer and Biber - recordings made with fellow Baroque specialists, John Toll and Nigel North (AKA 'Romanesca').
This sampler CD is a nice compilation of Manze's music - from solo violin to full orchestral music - featuring works from more well-known composers (Telemann, Bach, Handel, Vivaldi) to the more obscure Italian violin virtuoso composers (Tartini, Uccellini, Pandolfi, Geminiani, Marini). The selections spotlight his highly rhythmic, academic-rich style and techniques which have won accolades from the international music press like Gramophone, Penguin Guide, ClassicsToday and BBC Music. Highlights are the concerti grossi from Geminiani, Vivaldi and Handel and the sonatas from Handel and Telemann. One truly delightful work is the Handel Violin Sonata in which Manze illicits a most bouyant, spontaneous manner that is most uplifting. Less inspiring to me were the Bach and Pandolfi sonatas as were the somewhat mundane liner notes written by Manze - although they are not without some fascinating tidbits. But so much more could have been said about Manze, his unique style and his career in the notes by a third party to give a more colorful "portrait" of this artist.
If you are new to Manze's music, this CD is a great place to start to explore his broad discography and his compelling style and will help you sort out which composers/recordings you will most gravitate towards - or equally important ... the ones you don't. While varied and compelling, this one CD is only a smittering of Manze's recordings - unfortunately absent are representation works of his powerful readings of the unusual, free-form and often-meditative sonatas of the German-Catholic composers, Biber and Schmelzer (some of Manze's best recordings in my opinion). ClassicsToday gave this CD a perfect 10/10 if that helpf make your decision easier (the sound quality is consistentyly very vivid too). Harmonia Mundi offers this sampler CD at a "teaser" price (about half price) as a way to introduce listeners to great artists - with the hope of course that you will buy a few of the CD's represented here (at full price) that most catch your interest. Either way it is a win for the classical listener exploring the less-familiar Baroque violin repertoire that Manze specializes in dusting off from the shelves and performing most strikingly.
Great Marketing Idea.......2000-08-29
I had heard of Andrew Manze but never heard him play. This CD is a very inexpensive introduction to an incredible Baroque violinist. He opens your ears to a completely different level of performance in this type of music. Highly recommended as an introduction, but be warned that you will soon be purchasing many more of his CDs.

Telemann's musical imagination and inventiveness are astonishing. He is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most prolific composer in history (over 7,000 pieces!). Yet even when he turned pieces out by the dozen, as he did here, each one had its own character and individual ideas. Andrew Manze plays each one stylishly, although I would no more recommend listening to all of them together than I would advise hearing all of Bach's music for solo violin. Try a few at a time. The little Gulliver Suite, which brings the timing up to 78 minutes, is a charmer. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Dissapointing performance.......2007-03-29
This smart and beautiful music for solo violin deserves a better performance. I don't like the weak projection and the
very tiny sound of Manze. Occasionaly there are too wide volume differences between the tracks. Clearly Manze has admirers. I am not one of them.
Four Gut Strings, Unaccompanied.......2006-07-11
These fantasias for unaccompanied violin by Telemann are solidly in the tradition of German polyphonic/chordal solo string music (for example, the Bach violin Sonatas and Partitas). Often in such music one's interest is held by the sheer textural legerdemain of composer and performer - the marvel of one ostensibly monophonic instrument creating the illusion of multiple voices. There is a whole baroque cosmos contained in these little pieces, a grand tour of baroque affects and styles from learned to GALANT: graceful sicilianas alternate with austere SONATA DA CHIESA-like movements, and quasi-fugal pieces are followed fast on the heels by gauche country-fiddle dances. Andrew Manze, the baroque violin superstar of our time, finds miles of expressiveness and wit in what seems on the page to be plain and conventional baroque rhetoric. His playing is sparkling and nimble. His astounding technique is married to a beautiful CANTABILE tone, a bold sense of fantasy and humor, and a sure feeling for the structure, timing, and placement of the tiny movements that make up the fantasias. This is an extravaganza not to be missed by any fans of baroque violin playing.
scraping the surface.......2005-12-22
Andrew Manze's playing, hailed by petty music critics all over the world as witty and brilliant, blah blah blah, certainly falls flat here. Yes, he's got chops, and he's made it his admirable quest to record everything under the sun, but these beatiful and fun (yes, fun!) Fantasias are rich with rhetorical sentiment, and Manze breezes mechanically and monotonously. If you're a Manze fan already, of course you're going to love this CD. You'll also love it if you have no idea what "rhetorical sentiment" is. However, if you know anything about early music or prefer other things to eat besides vanilla pudding, you may not want to waste your money. I wish one day we could live in a world where recording companies record good music, not just flashy names.
A Catalog of Riches.......2001-11-07
Telemann's 12 Fantasias for solo violin (1735) are intriguingly elusive. Their brief movements offer a whirlwind tour of European manners and styles. The player's resources are laid bare -- no overarching formal design (this isn't Bach), and few openings for virtuosic display.
Andrew Manze is a star of the period-instrument set. Lightning reflexes (and wits) and improvisatory flair are his strengths -- precisely what this music demands. His playing is a catalog of riches. Compare two concluding allegros -- No. 4, with its bustling near-orchestral accompaniment sharply set against the melody, and No. 11, all fantastic lightness. Or the Italianate curves of No. 6's graceful Siciliana. Caroline Balding seconds Manze impeccably in the encore, a playful suite inspired by "Gulliver's Travels."
The sound is typical of Harmonia Mundi's best -- a close, unimpeded perspective, as mellow as it is brilliant.
Love this disk - can hardly get enough of it.......2001-07-14
This is an extremely enjoyable, listenable disk. I love the Bach solo sonatas but they should not be compared to the Telemann, which is a completely different thing, "easy listening" by comparison and full of memorable tunes. The disk does not wear thin. It's sitting in my car CD player right now and I must have listened to it 25 times and simply haven't been motivated to replace it, because I haven't gotten tired of it!

Customer Reviews:
A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09
This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".
A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06
Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).
"the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06
The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.
For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.
This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.
A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

Captured on this one disc are the great film scores Bernard Herrmann did for several classic science fiction films of the '50s and '60s. Herrmann did not go in for simple atmospherics and cheap orchestral tricks with his music. He knew that the music would have to conjure a mental world all its own. This is especially true in "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad". It's a tone poem Rimsky-Korsakov could have written. The best here is "The Day the Earth Stood Still" with its use of the (then) revolutionary theremin. It's a clear masterpiece, all on its own. --Paul Cook
Customer Reviews:
The other essential Herrmann CD.......2004-08-25
I like to think of this CD as being the "Forbidden Planet" of film scores CDs -- technically marvelous, consistently enthralling on an emotional and mental level, and way ahead of its time.
Unfortunately it is not available as I write this. Last time I visited this Amazon site, there was one CD for sale for almost $60. You'll have to make up your own mind if this music is worth that much to you. I made my choice long ago to own this and keep it in my library, conceivably forever.
With five film scores, 35 tracks and 72 minutes of the most high grade science fiction music, this CD should be considered the definitive source for Bernard Herrmann's non-Hitchcock film scores. Not only did he conduct the National Philharmonic Orchestra in these recordings, the composer approved of the Phase 4 recording and mixing. It is, as the notes say, a unique listening experience.
I have found this CD to be a constant source of imagination, vision and scope in film music that still has no peer 30 years after its production. The opening sequence to "Journey To The Center of the Earth" is better than it ever was in the theater, where the music was a hackneyed backdrop to an incredilbe film. In this CD, the music dwarfs the film action.
My favorite sequence in this issue is Herrmann's work for the Ray Bradbury novella "Fahrenheit 451", which was recast in some minds recently when "Fahrenheit 911" appeared in theaters throughout the country.
Every bit of the miracle of that little film is projected through this eerily wonderful music, which seems to comprise a world of its own. The sections help recall Sontag's first trip on the fire engine, the bedroom fire and the finale.
The lengthiest tract on this disk is the near 27 minute set from the film "Gulliver's Travels". I've never seen the movie but will attest that the music is out of this world in a very British way. This section seems closer to following the musical rules for a suite than any other on this disk.
Decca had the good sense to return the Bernard Herrmann-conducted Hitchcock scores to circulation, so maybe they will do the same with this miraculous disk. Again, the notes are nothing to write home about, but even with that considered no lover of film music or the music of Bernard Herrmann can consider their library complete without this disk.

The Fantasy Album.......2007-05-09
You can't have too many Sci-Fi albums. This is a good addition to anyone's collection. A good crosssection of SF music. It even has music from The Thief of Bagdad from the 30s(?)
nice release from Silva.......2005-08-15
As with most of the recent Silva America releases, Silva Screen has compiled older recordings from previous CDs and added some new material exclusively for this release. In this case, Silva has recorded music from The first Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings films, both Mummy films and Gladiator. I'm not sure what else is new, but combine these excellent tracks with golden age material from Hermann and Rozsa, and some Elfman (Batman, Edward Scissorhands) and Williams (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Witches of Eastwick) for good measure, you have a heckuva compilation.
The performance is first rate with only the Raiders March being a subpar track.
Outstanding Fantasy Scores from Hit Fantasy Movies.......2003-04-05
If you're looking for some fantasy role-playing game backround music to play or just like mostly classical fantasy-esque music, this double CD contains excellent scores wrapped in whopping total of 140+ minutes worth of music.
Classic music from your favorite hit fantasy and action movies are found all over this huge, quality collection. You'll hear suites and sounds from outstanding films like Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, Willow, The Mummy, Harry Potter, Excalibur, Conan, Highlander, Batman, Edward Scissorhands and more.
A recent (2002) and impressive collection of musical scores, and by far the best CDs I've personally bought for fantasy themed music.
"successful formula from Silva spells Classic all the way".......2002-09-24
History repeats itself with this latest compilation from Silva Screen "Fantasy Album:Adventure & Fantasy at the Movies", a heap of music to digest within the twenty-eight tracks. All beautifully arranged and conducted by Paul Bateman and Nic Raine with the City Of Prague Orchestra in full force...with the helping hand of David Temple (choir master) of the Crouch End Festival Chorus. A perfect blend from brew master James Fitzpatrick(producer) who has impeccable foresight and taste in film music.
What I most enjoy about Silva, is the fact they always have the lesser recorded selections within the big picture...take for instance "THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD"(1958), "THE THREE WORLDS OF GULLIVER" (1960), "MYSTERIOUS ISLAND" (1961) and "JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS" (1963), all four composed by Bernard Herrmann who is in a class by himself, they'll never be another.
But for my money the highlight picks are "GLADITOR"(2000), Hans Zimmer's recreation of the spectacle that was Romes, with man against man, man against beast and the armies that clashed and fell under the powerful story that unfolds within this suite from the film ~ "BEETLEJUICE", "EDWARD SCISSORHANDS" and "BATMAN", each from the films of Tim Burton still ring true within the realm of great direction and storytelling, this can only be topped by composer Danny Elfman who adds the frosting to an appetizing treat ~ "LEGEND" (1985), can faeries, goblins, woodland spirits mix well with the Lord of Darkness...only the legendary Jerry Goldsmith can conjure up a tune to drive the entire cast into a frenzy with "FARIE DANCE/REUNITED", this is the stuff nightmares are made of with a happy ending of course.
With composers like Tan Dun, Randy Edelman, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, James Horner, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Brian May, Jerome Moross, Carl Orff, Basil Poledouris, Miklos Rozsa, Howard Shore, Alan Silvestri, John Williams and Hans Zimmer...one can only hope this will last forever. Silva, I don't know how you do it, but keep them coming...gotta love it!

A Beautiful Score.......2001-08-11
When I was growing up THE 3 WORLDS OF GULLIVER was one of my first films that I became enchanted with when I started making the transition from cartoons to live action movies. One thing that always stood out in this movie was the music. When I listened to this recording it really brought back memories. I really like Bernard Herrmann's scores that he wrote for fantasy films. The Royal Scottish National Orchestra did a fine job on this recording. I think what sets this recording apart from Herrmann's other fantasy scores was that he was able to develop music for the different fantastic settings that Gulliver was confronted with, yet he always reminded us musically of Gulliver's love of country and his fair lady in these various interludes. Joel McNeely seems to have captured Herrmann's intent ever so fervently and reverently.
McNeely Delivers Again with The 3 Worlds of Guliver.......2001-06-29
Once again after earlier achievements, such as "Psycho," "Vertigo" and "Marnie," Joel McNeely and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra deliver another definitive digital recording from composer Bernard Herrmann. This recording is excellent and stands alongside their recording of "Marnie" for the sheer poetic interpretation of Herrmann's scoring. "The Overture" and "The Lovers" are central to the score as they keep Guliver's love of his homeland and his beloved lady central to his convictions no matter where the winds blow him. This recording reveals brilliant color and subtleties so precisely and eloquently that you are able to recall the exact scenes from the film, as was the case with their previous recordings. "The Crocodile" and "The Pursuit" are brilliant examples of Herrmann's ability to breathe life and reality into the world of fantasy filmmaking by delivering mystery and urgency with an undercurrent strain to a simplistic forefront melody. The recording of this complete score has been long overdue, but it was worth the wait. I highly recommend it.
"The music of the 18th Century was a passion for Herrmann".......2001-03-12
Varese Sarabande presents the second assignment of Bernard Herrmann from Ray Harryhausen's filmmaking enterprise - "The 3 Worlds of Gulliver", it is the most multifaceted in Herrmann's chronology.
The score groups roughly into two oppositional pairs of music - the first pair is masculine and feminine - marches, love theme, English folk songs, nocturnes and overture, all are inclusive.
The second pair - small and large - is the music of Lilliput and Brobdingnag, the musical potential is enormous - as with a satire of monarchial pageantry - outstanding orchestration focusing especially on winds and percussion. The Brobdignag character alters the score completely, looming, ominous residents are captured in a simple chordal movements of low winds and brass.
Herrmann once again achieved his goal of scoring to the films story-line - is nothing less than perfection, truly a gifted composer. Director Jack Sher and Arthur Ross exciting script...with Ray Harryhausen's superb Dynamation special effects - but it was Herrmann's score that put the icing on the cake!
None of this would be possible, but thanks to The Royal Scottish National Orchestra, conducted by Joel McNeely - Robert Townson (producer), Jonathan Allen (recording engineer), Richard Hale (asst engineer), Varese Sarabande records...and of course the legendary icon and our favorite composer - BERNARD HERRMANN!
