Sixties Britpoppers the Small Faces begat the Faces, the reshaped '70s version. Of course, the latter-day incarnation of the band was best known for its lead singer, Rod Stewart, and his unique, squalling voice. The players, meanwhile, displayed Stones-ish sensibilities, which makes sense given that guitarist Ron Wood left the group to join Jagger, Richards, and the boys. Faces didn't release a great number of albums, but during their tumble on the rock charts, they made some truly great songs, several of which are found on this, their consensus classic. "Stay with Me" sounds like a barroom brawl set to music, and "Miss Judy's Farm" puts one in mind of a garage band that lucked out and found a studio and a (somewhat) sober producer. A Nod... is the most representative recording of a band that helped shape hard rock and punk for years to come. --Lorry Fleming
Customer Reviews:
"Debris"...Ronnie Lane snags the best track on this classic........2007-02-26
Ronnie Lane's poignant ode to his dad..."Debris"...is the killer track on this album. Stewart's BEST vocals are the background vocals he provides on this track. That's a pretty bold claim when you're talking about an album that includes "Miss Judy's Farm," "Stay With Me," "Too Bad," "That's All You Need"...but it's a fact. The late, great Ronnie Lane provided a much-needed "McCartney sweetness" counterpoint to Stewart's rooster-haired strutting, and that combination (along with the unstoppable Ronnie Wood) made this band magic. They pulled off one more...the lesser "Ooh La La"...and Ronnie Lane headed south. Free's Tetsu Yamauchi gamely stepped in to fill the void, but with all due respect, he was "just a bass player." After a sloppy live album, Faces faded away and Stewart became a cartoon of his former self. But on THIS album, you have an ample opportunity to understand what the hype was all about.
For One Song.......2006-12-28
For Christmas this was on my wish list for "Stay with Me". I got my wish and had to absolutely laugh and cringe through the rest of this CD. To say "Horrible" would be tooooo kind but that only applies to the lyrics and singing.
However, the redeeming factor for the second star was the actual music. If they had just kept their mouths shut, I probably would have given it a 4.
C'mon..........2006-08-15
...what are you reading this for? You know what to expect when you buy a disc produced by Rod Stewart's Faces: at least four or five hard-rocking party numbers ('Miss Judy's Farm', 'Stay With Me', 'Memphis', 'Too Bad', and 'That's All You Need') featuring Rod's raspy vocals, and heavy, pulsing guitar and bass lines courtesy of Ron Wood and Ronnie Lane; two or three irresistible love ballads ('Love Lives Here', 'Debris'); and to top it all off, some honky-tonk or boogie numbers ('You're So Rude', 'Last Orders Please'). 'A nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse...', released in November of 1971, charged up to number six on the US album charts, and stands as the most commercially successful of the bands' four albums.
While there isn't always great depth to the lyrics offered up by the three R's... Rod, Ron, and Ronnie, no one can deny that they often cut straight to the chase. On 'Miss Judy's Farm', Rod paints vivid scenario's such as "I was just eighteen and all I needed was to get my way". Ironically, on 'That's All You Need', Stewart sings, "...my kind of music... you knew it wasn't gonna be simple..." when "simple" is exactly the form of music this band revels in. That particular song drifts along on a masterful lead guitar riff that makes it one of the most under-appreciated epic rock tracks. The second side of 'A nod...' (on the original vinyl version) opened with one of the bands' most successful single releases, 'Stay With Me', which climbed to number eight on the national charts in January of 1972. Despite being mercilessly overplayed on both the AM and FM frequencies, 'Stay With Me' has proven powerful enough to overcome overexposure. Stewart's barroom delivery takes lines like "I hear you're a mean old Jezebel" and transforms them into terms of endearment. A honky tonk piano track and grinding rhythm guitar propel the number into a fantastic instrumental coda embracing several faux finishes. 'Too Bad' chimes in with a tale involving a twelve foot tall butler, a colored queen, and sweaty girls over an up-tempo, party-rock beat. Their cover of Chuck Berry's 'Memphis' plods along in the beginning, but confidently gains intensity as Rod tells the familiar tale about a phone call from southside Memphis Marie, all of six years old.
Among the better ballads are 'Love Lives Here', offering a melodic combination of guitars, piano, and organ, and Ronnie Lane's 'Debris', supported by more solid guitar and piano interaction. While less entertaining than the surrounding fare, 'You're So Rude' blends a rocking rhythm guitar riff with a tight electric lead guitar, and tops it off with a harmonica in the coda. Perhpas the weakest track among the nine performed is the side one closer, 'Last Orders Please', a break-up tale dropping some worn cliche's such as "you've got yours and I've got mine".
I was a senior in high school the year that 'A nod...' hit the shelves, and the disc proved to be one of the first to hit the platter at each and every party that brought closure to that most important of all years. Whenever I see that cover (which always made me think of this as a live disc, which it isn't), surrounded by that distinct dark brown border, waves of memories and emotions from my youth surround me. For that reason, my own perception of the quality of this disc may be biased, but with each subsequent listen I feel vindicated that it isn't just my associations to it that make 'A nod...' a rock and roll classic. As many good times as this album must have witnessed in the early 1970's, it remains vital enough to produce many more to come.
Brings back great memories. Solid rock & roll. .......2005-10-04
Back in the late 70's I had the vinyl and this was one of my favorite albums. The CD version sounds just as good if not better. The music is still very fresh, classic rock & roll. Great rock singing and guitar work. This has to be one of Rod Stewart's best material. I think he was at his best with the Faces or maybe he was just younger, drank more Scotch and really believed in what he was singing. The later material just has not been convincing with lot of commercialism. I am curious to listen to the Gold Disc version from Audio Fidelity.
The Faces' best record.......2005-03-27
"A Nod Is As Good As A Wink...To A Blind Horse" is the Faces' third album in just two years, and it is their most consistent record alongside 1973's "Ooh La La".
Filled with crunchy electric guitars, blooze-n-boogie piano, and deep, bluesy grooves, it boasts the group's only significant hit, the superb, fiery rocker "Stay With Me". But there are numerous other highlights, including the strutting "Miss Judy's Farm", a rollicking cover of Chuck Berry's "Memphis", and the piano-driven hard rock of "Too Bad"...everything is worth a listen, actually.
"A Nod Is As Good As A Wink..." rocks like very few other records of the early seventies, and this fine record proves what a great, underrated rock n' roll outfit the Faces were.

Back to simpler times...........2007-06-06
This is definitely something different from what one normally expects from Carly Simon. Upon listening to it, it does also have that soothing effect that her latest album "Into White" aims for. This compilation of 2 albums of the Simon Sisters takes one back to simpler times, when life and most everything around one was simple, to a kind of music that one just doesn't hear anymore. Adding to the fact that it is a limited edition, it is a must have for any Carly Simon fan. Several of the songs grow on you after a while, and for those not familiar with folk music, a good way to be introduced to the genré back to its olden days. The essay in the booklet written by Carly is most joyful to read! Tracks like Rise Up, Dink's Blues, Winkin'Blinkin'&Nod and Once I had a True Love are great for those quiet evenings when one just wants to be alone and have a peaceful evening, as Carly and Lucy both emphasize their liking for lullabies. This is a rare jewel for anyone with an appreciation for wholesome good music from a time gone by.
Simon Sisters - What A Treat.......2007-02-21
Carly and her sister's renditions of the songs on this album touch your heart and prove from early on they both were extremely talented.I listen to this album almost every night - can not get enough! I have also love Carly Simon since first hearing "You're So Vain" - I am glad they finally released this early music. Carly - don't ever stop making music!
Carly Simon used to do folk music...........2007-02-10
Yes, it's true. Before Carly Simon became famous she used to sing and play guitar with her sister Lucy Simon and they were called the Simon Sisters. I had a scratchy old LP of the Simon Sisters that I bought off ebay a while back and I never used to play it as the quality was so bad. This CD however is a different kettle of fish altogether! The quality is so good that it may as well have just been recorded.
The CD consists of folk music, some of which you may have heard, but probably mostly not - particularly if you live in England like moi! Carly and Lucy create beautiful harmonies on this CD.
If you are a die hard Carly Simon fan, then you'll want to add this to your collection to make it complete.
However ; do not expect the Carly you already know, this is very different indeed.
Having said that, I really like it and the fact that it's now available on CD in perfect condition gives me no excuses not to play it anymore!!
So it's not your normal Carly, but if you like something a bit different and enjoy folk music, then go for it!
p.s. don't forget to check out Carly's new release "Into White".
Beautiful...............2007-01-25
This is just amazing... so lovely... I am loving this collection of Carly and Lucy Simon. A desert island cd for me!
Simply amazing.......2007-01-12
This CD collects the first two Simon Sisters albums onto one disc. These are the recordings made by Carly and Lucy Simon for the Kapp label in 1963 and 1964, released as two albums called THE SIMON SISTERS and CUDDLEBUG.
Both albums are presented in stereo (my old, scratchy LPs of these albums are both mono, so it's quite nice to hear the songs in stereo for the first time). Sound is remarkably excellent -- no tape hiss, wonderful clarity and stereo separation. The tapes from the CUDDLEBUG sessions seem to suffer from a bit of oxide-shedding, but I only noticed this when listening through headphones and it's relatively minor. Whoever did the remastering of these albums did an excellent job!
As for the material, this is pure early '60s folk music. The choice of material ranges from traditional folk songs to original songs written by the likes of Bob Dylan and Carly Simon herself. To my ear, these albums sound much like the earliest albums of Judy Collins. Most songs are accompanied by guitar and upright bass, with some percussion thrown in on some songs.
My only complaint with this CD is that it doesn't collect the "complete" recorded work of the Simon Sisters. They recorded a third album called THE LOBSTER QUADRILLE AND OTHER SONGS FOR CHILDREN for Columbia Records a few years later, and this album remains unavailable in its entirety on CD.
But, aside from the CD not being "complete," I am thrilled to have this CD of the Simon Sisters. How any recordings of Carly Simon have been out-of-print for so many decades is a complete mystery to me. But buy it quickly -- Hip-O Select is only making 5000 of them, so they will be gone soon...

Album Description
"All The Rage" is the debut release from LA-based singer/songwriter Cary Brothers. These four tracks, produced by Chad Fischer (Alexi Murdoch), run the gamut from power pop ("Supposed To Be") to acoustic folk ("Honestly"), but they all share one thing in common - as Cary says, "They're all pretty much straight from the heart, whether it's being broken or put back together."
Cary's song "Blue Eyes" is also featured alongside tracks from Coldplay, The Shins, and Simon & Garfunkel on the soundtrack of the Fox Searchlight film GARDEN STATE, starring Zach Braff, Natalie Portman, and Peter Sarsgaard.

Too Few Songs, Too Much Money .......2006-03-20
I Paid $9 for this CD, and while it is a good cd, there are only 3 songs on it for a total of 14 minutes of listening pleasure. I find this to be a rip off. Do yourself a favor and buy a longer CD for the money.
Buy it!.......2005-09-08
Excellent mini album that includes some music from Scrubs and Garden State. Well worth buying and Cary has another album out this month as well. (If you like this album try Lucky Jim - Our Troubles End Tonight) No need to try before you buy - all 4 songs get 5 stars from me, excellent voice and each song has a different feel to it.
Heartbreaking and beautiful.......2005-08-11
Cary Brothers is an excellent musician and songwriter, and in "All the Rage", he really showcases his talent. I saw him play live in a small indie record store before I even got to hear the EP. I wasn't all that familiar with him but I really like his song, "Blue Eyes" from Garden State. So to say the least, when I saw him perform a mini-concert for the 10 or so people in the store, I was more than impressed, and from that point on I became a fan. I also got to meet him for a few minutes after the show. He was very down-to-earth and seemed humble. For the most part, his songs sound mello and dreamy. A few of his songs boast heartwrenching melodies, especially "Something" which is particulary haunting, and is comparable to "Blue Eyes" if not better. I can't wait until the LP comes out, which he said should come out in this month of August.
Nice debut record.......2005-07-28
Cary Brothers is something of an engima for me-- a folky, rootsy singer-songwriter type, this is pretty far outside the domain of my usual listening, and yet there's something about his music that worked pretty well for me.
What I think it is may be that there's a sense of honesty without pretention that circulates through his record-- when he sings about trying to put a past romance out of his mind and quietly mumbles "I wish your love away", you feel like he does. Brothers' vocals feel like they come from the midwest-- a sort of road weary sound. But he adds to that a good range and roundness of tone that I think is often missing in these forms.
This EP, consisting of four songs, is his debut. Three of the songs are folky pop pieces and one ("Supposed to Be") is a driving alt-pop piece. Although its a decent number, it doesn't quite fit in on the record, and its electric guitars sit somewhat uncomfortably amongst the rest of the pieces on here.
But the rest is all this kind of bluesy, folky pop stuff-- smokey ("Blue Eyes", also featured on the "Garden State" soundtrack), bubbling and delicate ("Something") and wistful and brilliant ("Honesty"). One thing the record definitely indicates, we can expect big things from Brothers. Recommended.
Cary is amazing!.......2005-06-08
Cary Brothers has a wonderful, soothing voice and all the songs on this EP are great! He is one of the best emerging arists right now and I can't wait for him to release a full length album!

In honor of Bob Dylan's 60th birthday--May 24, 2001--the singer-songwriters and roots musicians of Red House Records offer yet another homage to the master. The tracks here range from the memorable and sometimes profound to forgettable and pleasant. With the exception of Eliza Gilkyson, whose gossamer version of "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" opens the collection, the finest interpreters are the wise, time-worn voices who let the mysteries of Dylan's songs speak for themselves. Martin Simpson evokes the most heartbreaking tones of "Boots of Spanish Leather." Norman Blake and Peter Ostroushko (the only performers on the disc who have recorded with Dylan) see into the old-timey, almost 19th-century spirit of "Restless Farewell." Rosalie Sorrels, with her stately, burnished voice, gives perhaps the definitive version of "Tomorrow Is a Long Time." On the other hand, Lucy Kaplansky, Cliff Eberhardt, and John Gorka indulge in an earnestness Dylan mostly eschewed. --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
Getting Real with Bob Dylan.......2001-12-05
Superb interpretations of America's supreme musical genius. Each version here is 'real', the shining quality of even Dylan's flawed or tossed-off compositions. Standouts are Guy Davis' "Sweetheart Like You", Spider John Koerner and Dave Ray's "Delia", and John Gorka's "Girl from the North Country." If you can listen to Martin Simpson's "Boots of Spanish leather" without weeping for the beauty of it, you haven't got tears. The range of styles (cf. Tom Landa and the Paperboys doing "All Along the Watchtower" and Hart-Rouge doing "Dieu a Nos Cotes") reflects how Dylan has absorbed and transformed all genres of American music.
Dylan still appreciates the real and he certainly recognized that this 'birthday gift' was the real deal. Read, by contrast, Mikal Gilmore's interview with Bob Dylan in the November 22 Rolling Stone for Dylan's keen nose for phoniness.
Mikal knows what's what. His brother is Gary Gilmore, of Mailer's *Executioner's Song* fame and Mikal's own superb *Shot in the Heart,* which I have used in my war and violence courses. His attachment to the 'real' in life seems to have gotten Bob Dylan to speak in non-oblique ways about what he is about.
Well, there was the 1991 Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy's where Dylan was presented with a ridiculous proposal to have others (mainly pop phonies) sing a medley of his songs, and all he had to do was "show up." So he said okay.
BEGIN QUOTE
DYLAN: Then the Gulf War broke out. The Grammy people called and said, "Listen, we're in a tight fix. So-and-so, who was going to sing 'Times Are A-Changin',' is afraid to get on an airplane. So-and-so, who was going to do 'Like a Rolling Stone,' doesn't want to travel becuase he just had another baby and doesn't want to leave his family." That's understandable. But then so-and-so, who was going to sing, "It's All Over, Baby Blue," was in Africa and didn't want to take a chance flying to New York, and so-and-so, who was going to sing "All Along the Watchtower," wasn't sure he wanted to be at any high-visiblity place right then, because it might be a little dangerous. So they said, "Could you come and sing? Could *you* fill the time?" And I said, "What about the guy who's introducing me [Jack Nicholson]?" They said, "He's OK. He's coming."
Anyway I got disillusioned with all the characters at that time-with their inner character and their ability to be able to keep their word and their idealism and their insecurity. All the ones that have the gall to thrust their tortured inner psyches on an outer world but can't at least be true to their word....I just lost respect for them. There's a few that are decent and God-fearing and will stand up in a righteous way. But I wouldn't want to count on most of them.
END QUOTE
Count on "A Nod to Bob" instead.
"Nodding off" is more like it.......2001-10-26
Producing a tribute to Bob Dylan by having other singers cover his songs is almost as ludicrous as asking a bunch of painters to re-do Monet's water lilies. These are cheap imitations. Only "Restless Farewell" (Norman Blake & Peter Ostroushko) has anything to recommend it.
The remainder, despite the high profile and great work of some of the other performers, is pretty bleak. In particular, Lucy Kaplanskys' rendition of "It Aint Me Babe" will make your skin crawl. There is a lot of sappy sentimentalism here that bears no resemblance to the grit, irony, and sometimes venom in Dylan's delivery. If you are a Dylan fan, don't waste your money on this. If you have money to burn, give it to charity.
Good, Not Great.......2001-10-14
A must have for any fan of Dylan's, poetry, or just plain ole life. The artists have interpreted and presented individually, and that's what makes this CD good. The halting, "I Want You," alone is worth the price of admission to this uneven, earthy experience. I like the CD so well, I gave a musician/friend/artist my first copy before I purchased my second.
sarah jane's thoughts.......2001-07-17
I thought this was basically an uneven album, with some triumphs and some failures. Bob Dylan is a hard act to follow as a musician and as a vocalist, and everyone who listens to this will be hearing his voice and phrasing first, so I admire every one of the artists on this CD for their efforts.
Martin Simpson actually brought the message of the Boots of Spanish Leather home to me in a way that Bob never did. But he inspired me to listen to Bob's version again, to see the difference or the similarity. I think that Simpson's interpretation is awesome. The Roches they caught everything so about the Clothesline song with wonderful harmonies and humor. Rosalie Sorrels is someone that I never knew about (I'm a bit of a neophyte) and she absolutely mesmerized me. I'm going to get more of her music. Ramblin' Jack of course held his own, with his great story.
The version of I Want You was so off the mark to me that I couldn't finish listening to it. That was really the only disconcerting interpretation on the CD for me. The rest of the CD was good....not much more of note if you know what I mean. Nothing really stood out for me beyond what I've mentioned. It's not a must-have... but I'm glad I have it.
inconsistent, but when it's good it's wonderful.......2001-07-04
This is not the star-studded glory of the 30th anniversary concert, nor does it pretend to be. This tribute is just what it claims to be: a nod, that is quiet, respectful, tasteful. As such, the most understated and sensitive efforts contained herein are by far the most effective and poignant tributes to Master Dylan. By contrast, there are several attempts here to "improve" on the Dylan orignals in various ways, and these range from merely vapid to truly appalling. Lucy Kaplansky's saccharine "It Ain't Me, Babe," for example, misses the point entirely, with its righteous earnestness and too-precious false cadences. Also, while "All Along the Watchtower" has been successflly interpreted in a variety of styles, it doesn't seem to fit well in the Latin/Celtic fusion sound employed by Tom Landa & the Paperboys. And winning the award for most inappropriate Dylan cover since Franki Valli's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," we have "With God On Our Side," sung in French, by a man and a woman in harmony, in waltz time, with a major modulation in the middle. I'm not sure it's even POSSIBLE to corrupt the song further.
That said, there is quite a bit of beautiful stuff here. Eliza Glikyson starts off the set with an approriately sweet, yet still slightly stinging, "Love Minus Zero / No Limit," and in doing so is one of the only of the younger performers not to embarrass herself. The Roches demonstrate just how cool Dylan can be with their tongue-in-cheek "Clothes Line Saga," and Martin Simpson's effortless guitar on "Boots of Spanish Leather" is exactly right. Norman Blake's and Peter Ostroushko's "Restless Farewell" veritably improves on the original. Rosalie Sorrels is, of course, a proven force, and her version of the gorgeous "Tomorrow is a Long Time" is not only even prettier than the original, but also demonstrates a full understanding and appreciation of the song's power (something almost never accomplished in this collection, especially among the younger performers). And finally, in a moving tribute from one grizzled warrior to another, Ramblin' Jack Elliott's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" is both the thinnest arrangement (just the singer and his spare guitar picking, recorded live), and the most powerful performance, of them all. Jack's voice and phrasing, and his mastery of and intimacy with the song, prove he is clearly a man who has been there and back, and who understands that Bob has made the same trip. Listening to Jack sing Bob's song, you have to smile even as your eyes mist up at the thought of all those years. Jack's "Don't Think Twice" may or may not be the best version of the seminal song, but it's far and away the best thing here.
This collection is inconsistent, surely, but if you skip over the self-righteous efforts of the new folkies to the musicians who have a clue, your patience is more than rewarded. As Ramblin' Jack Elliott says at the end of his piece, Happy Birthday, Bob.

Loved By All.......2006-10-05
I can't say enough about this cd. Both of my two year old grandson's LOVE this music and request it as soon as they enter my car! They would get upset when mom and dad couldn't turn it on in their cars so I've purchased two additional cd's for their use. Adults as well as children will enjoy the songs
Great for kids AND adults!.......2006-01-24
This isn't your typical "Wheels on the Bus" kids' album. I bought this at the Land of Nod in Chicago on a whim, after having test-tried it in the store. I ended up buying two of them - one for my six-year old son, and one for my dad to listen to when he has the grandkids over. The music is a lot of fun - very well done - and a lot of tunes (Yellow Bus) are pretty funny when you listen to the lyrics. Original, fun, music for everyone. My son loves it and I do too.

The Faces scored their only real hit in America with the raucous and brilliant "Stay With Me," and the rest of this long player from 1971 is deliriously good. In fact, it's a wonder that "All You Need"--a visceral, Delta slide-heavy song--is not at the very top of the classic rock canon as well. Quite a few early `70s acts played straight-ahead rock and roll with the kind of good time attitude displayed here by Ronnie Lane, Rod Stewart, Ron Wood, and friends. What makes the group stand out, especially on this, their best album, is how willfully sloppy, raucous and a little strange these songs are--qualities particularly valued with post-punk hindsight. There are shaggy dog jokes disguised as songs ("You're So Rude"), one of the only Chuck Berry covers that approaches the original ("Memphis, Tennessee"), and truly sappy and maudlin numbers that do not suck ("Love Lives Here," "Debris"). One listen and it's easy to see why a group of boys from Georgia would dedicate their career to rewriting this album. This "Audio Fidelity" version of the album packs full, analog-style wallop. --Mike McGonigal
Album Description
Boasting songs like, "Stay With Me", "Miss Judy's Farm", "A Nod Is As Good As A Wink", features Rod Stewart on lead vocals and is their most consistent record and arguably their best. Nobody rocked better than this. The collection also includes a rollicking cover of Chuck Berry's "Memphis". "A Nod Is As Good As A Wink" is the most representatie recording of a band that helped shape hard rock and punk for years to come.

Another Audio Fidelity Benchmark.......2006-09-06
This may very well be the best rock 'n' roll album ever made - no kidding - it's that good, and this is the best CD version of it ever made. Audio Fidelity is at the head of the class when it comes to remastering classic albums, and this is a perfect example.
Sit Back and Grip Your Chair.......2006-08-20
Here's another great Steve Hoffman mastering job. This is a CD that leaves its vinyl versions in the dust. The bass will give your subwoofer a workout and literally shake your teeth. The drums are crisp and the snares rattle. Rod Stewart sounds amazingly rough and Ronnie Woods guitars cut like a knife. This is definitely a must buy.
Best version Great Album!.......2005-03-30
That Ron Wood slide guitar on the last track, That's All You Need, so big and beefy, you can hear every nuance. Just great guitar, another wonderful example of classic Ron Wood guitar licks on some of the best classic rock 'n roll of all time.
The whole ablum is filled with great vocals, and great instrumental tone. Really a treat.
The great mastering, cutting, production- it lets you get swept away by the great music! Audio Fidelity 24K Plus is a success, if you love this album you must hear this version!
Great album from an underrated band, GREAT sounding disc.......2005-03-25
The Faces were underappreciated in their time, so much that their records were allowed to fall in and out of print. This album is arguably their best. It includes their biggest hit, "Stay With Me," but tracks like "You're So Rude" and "Memphis" are every bit as good.
This was a great, rollicking band, with a reputation built on raucous, sloppy, and fun rock n' roll; the Faces often backed Rod Stewart on his own solo albums, particularly Rod's first four classic albums, but on their own records, they cut loose even more. On A NOD IS AS A GOOD AS A WINK...TO A BLIND HORSE, their playing is actually a bit tighter compared to other Faces albums, but it's still got the right amount of slop, and they play GREAT.
Ronnie Lane does a fine job singing lead on some of the tracks, but Rod is even better. In the early days, his singing was described as the male-equivalent of Janis Joplin, and this album is further proof of what he could accomplish before turning to mainstream, adult contemporary pop.
This gold CD is better than WEA's budget CD issue, and at $19.98 retail, it's not a bad deal (most gold CD's run about $30). The CD is HDCD encoded, so if you have an HDCD decoder in your CD player, it'll sound ever better, but even if you don't, this disc will sound GREAT. It sounds even better than Rhino's remastered box set, FIVE GUYS WALK INTO A BAR..., and like I said, this is a great album.
Top Notch Engineering.......2005-03-21
This album has been around for a long time. What makes this one different?
It's the sound quality. Steve Hoffman of DCC fame has continued his legacy of audiophile quality remastering.
It's like you've never really heard this lp before. It's that well done. The sound quality will blow you away.

Given the massive box-office success of the original Men in Black, the only real surprise was that it took Hollywood five years to crank out the loopy, CGI-laden sequel. Composer Danny Elfman keeps the original MIB creative team intact, weighing in with a typically energetic orchestral score that dutifully ratchets up the suspense and punctuates the action. But it's a largely connect-the-dots exercise; aside from the deliciously loungy pair of Austin Powers-savvy bossa novas that bookend his work here ("Worm Lounge #1 (Worms in Black)," "Worm Lounge #2"), there's a sometimes uncomfortable lack of originality (let alone melodicism) in much of what remains. The tense, workmanlike efficiency works fine with the film, but longtime fans may find this a decidedly McElfman listening experience. Still, the soundtrack ends on an a pair of appropriately goofy/cheesy notes: Tim Blaney's gravel-voiced Frank the Pug crooning "I Will Survive" with grating canine fervor and the duet of Will Smith and Tra-Knox gettin' jiggy with the hip-hop/Bond music hybrid "Black Suits Comin' (Nod Ya Head)." --Jerry McCulley

I like movie soundtracks ..........2007-01-12
but the only song I like on this one is "Nod ya head (Black suits comin'). It's the original version in its entirety. Will Smith's "Greatest Hits" has a different version than this. If you buy MP3's online, then just download this one song. Otherwise, the CD is a waste of money. Sorry, Will!
great!!!!!!.......2003-01-21
It is a great C.D.!!!! Everyone will like it. Also it is ok for children! It is my favorite C.D. Also there is no profanity. It is better than the first.
Elfman is back in black.......2002-11-04
Danny Elfman, having scored the first Men in Black is back again scoring the sequel. No other composer could have done it but Danny Elfman. This score is much more groovier than the first. Elfman uses the Men in Black theme much more in this one than in the first. It is not exactly the same as the theme from the first, as little variations are thrown in to make it a bit different. In fact, almost every track uses the M.I.B. theme in some way or another. When you first put the CD in the player, this hip-hop tune starts up. "Worm Lounge #1" is Elfman in crazy form with swinging trumpets, hip-hop bass, and quirky la la vocals. Don't try dancing to this one, it will make you look stupid. Most of the score is groovy sounding with electric guitars along with a rhythm section and a moderately sized orchestra. "Big Jeff" is a thrilling action cue, with firing brass and choir. The chorus is also utilized in other cues, such as "Headquarters". "The Real Story" and "Heart Thump" take a break from the quirkiness music and show a more mellow side. From "The Defense Begins" to "The Finale", the music really takes off and shines. A massive brass section and a thrilling choir showcase these tracks and show Elfman in top form. "I Will Survive", the classic Gloria Gaynor song, shows Tim Blaney singing as "Frank the Pug". It doesn't really sound like singing, but more like talking. Will Smith's song "Black Suits Comin'" is cool and better than his song from the first film. He too is a talented artist and a great actor. However, Elfman is the spotlight of this soundtrack and showcases his incredible writing talents throughout. A thoroughly enjoyable soundtrack.
Really Great Cd, Elfman Keeps Gettin' Cooler and cooler..........2002-09-14
Well, here I am to report on yet another Danny Elfman score. With super-high expectations for the summer box-office, we were expecting some profound movies. What we got was having the top-grossing film of the summer, "Spider-Man", contain an Elfman score! YES! Now I am here to review "Men In Black 2". Although the first movie was done better and the score was a very common thing of the Elfman of that time, his methods have evolved. I sit here listening to a track from the first "MIB". Then, I will put on an "MIB2" song and compare. ...........Done. The verdict: the "MIB2" score is better than that of the first. "Men In Black 2" has a more frenetic feel than the first one. Plus, almost every track ends in one of the billion transformations of the "MIB" theme, which is a good thing. There's J's theme, that kind of Bond-esque "Do do....do do." There's also K's theme, the really light guitar melody, played at its most weirdly heart-wrenching best in the middle of "J Nabbed/K's Back", it is used again, very well, near the end of "The Light". I only have one question, where is Serleena's theme? She is the villain, all villains have themes. The Green Goblin had one, why can't Serleena have one?! Anyway, on "Chop-Chop", she doesn't get a theme but when you listen to it, you kinda sorta get the sense that shes there. "The Chase" is a really cool song, with synth, bongos, and orchestra in the background. You listen to it and its just really cool. It's kinda "slick" (no reference intended), in that way that only Elfman can deliver it to us, his ever adoring fans. Ah, "The Light". It delivers yet another transformation of the "MIB" theme, then after :25 it just calms down. It turns into someting really mellow and yet cosmic and choral at the same time. Elfman then delivers our pseudo love theme for J and Laura. To me, it isn't pseudo at all. It's a damn love theme to me. I think they should have kissed before she left. Crashing into a motif for the re-emergence of Serleena (she looked like an aerial view of Medusa's head). It calms down again with another showing of the love theme, crescendo-ing strings, to............A BANG FINALE!!! I told you all Elfman scores have one. (See: Batman - Original Motion Picture Score, review name "Elfman's Best Action Score). The CD could have done without Frank singing. Overall, BUY IT! Its really a good CD, if you want a cool vibe in your CD player.

A must have for any Metal Fan.......2001-08-14
I just purchased "Nod to the old School" by Armored Saint, a great album( I mean CD, I guess I'm showing my age!!!) If your a Saint fan or just a fan of real LA based 80's metal YOU MUST HAVE THIS CD. The combination of live, unreleased, and studio outakes is great. Armored Saint is one of the best underrated bands, who have survived the last 20 some years and who still put out quality music. I was a bit disappointd there weren't any selection from my favorite Saint album "Delerious Nomad" I consider this to be there best album and very much ahead of it's time. So just go out and spend the $15.00 for a great double CD. You won't be dissapointed.
MARCH OF THE SAINT!!!!!.......2001-08-02
Regardless if you are a fan from the 80's metal scene or trying to complete your Metal/Saint collection, this is a great compilation. Love the fact that they added the complete '83 Demo, and that some live tracks were recorded from the last tour..Hopefully this wont be the last we hear from Armored Saint. they are a special band that never got their due respect!!! Great musicians that have always made excellant, straight forward metal. Even though the members work other projects (Anthrax, Fates Warning) its good to know that they have a desire to keep the Saint alive! Only complaint that I have is the lack of material from the Raising Fear/ Delerios Nomad times. I would think that there has to be more material from that period which could have been added, but who knows. A fine compilation from a band that has never disappointed their true fans.

Armored Saint continues to put out good music.Unstable is an awesome rocker with all the elements. These dudes know what metal is !
Great for completists like me.......2001-07-29
If you're a big Armored Saint fan, you'll probably be purchasing this sometime soon, since most Saint fans tend to be hardcore and own everything the band has done. As such, I'm not going to waste time talking about the content (which is fantastic), but describing the differences between this and the import version. The import version (from Europe) has two extra songs on it..."Reign of Fire" (1989 demo - basically the same, but a little slower) and "Nothing Between the Ears" (1988 demo and a good song). ALSO - the song listing on the back of the import is incorrect - it DOES INCLUDE "You Can Run But You Can't Hide" (one of the band's finest moments w/ Dave Prichard) and "Tongue and Cheek"...they are extra songs on disk 2, but not listed. ALSO, there are 4 videos on it, "Long Before I Die" (live), "March of the Saint" (live), "Reign of Fire" and "Last Train Home". Verdict - if the import is only a couple of bucks more, get it. However, if there's a huge difference in price (and you have a copy of "Decline of Western Civilization" (which has "You Can Run..."), then get the domestic. Either way, you win...the Saint rules. Anthrax is 10 times the band they were since they got Bush. Now let's hope Metallica makes the right choice and picks their old buddy Joey Vera for the bass job.
