      Album Description

      North Carolina based group Cucanandy announces the release of Contented Minds, a recording of songs and tunes from Celtic traditions. The band is Stephanie Johnston (vocals, guitar), Mike Casey (Irish flute, guitar), Malke Rosenfeld (Irish flute, percussive dance), and Jason Cade (fiddle, mandolin). Some tracks include guest musicians on double bass, fiddle, vocals, and harmonium.

      Contented Minds resumes the exploration of ensemble playing and song arranging within a traditional context that Cucanandy began with its "wonderfully inventive" (The Washington Post) debut recording He Didn't Dance. After two years of touring extensively, the band's material is more firmly grounded in the Irish tradition, but the group continues to have fun satisfying its creative muse. The resulting Contented Minds is enjoyable to a range of listeners, reflecting both respect for innovation and tradition.

      The songs on Contented Minds, gathered from Ireland, Nova Scotia, Scotland,and North Carolina, are mostly about loss and suffering, but the thoughtful arrangements and emotionally rich vocals make listening to them uplifting too. In the heart-rending ballad Helen of Kirconnell, two lovers meet their untimely demise. Tha Mi Sgith Dhen Fhogair Seo is a Scots-Gaelic song of exile written in North Carolina more than 200 years ago by Scottish emigrant John Macrae. The cathartic final line of Yon Green Valley, "a contented mind bears no slavery," warns about the possibility of deception in love found too hastily.

      The opening track Maid on the Shore is a unique arrangement of a well-known song about outwitting a crew of dastardly sailors. Johnston's expressive singing and the intricate interplay between flute and fiddle are propelled by driving guitar and foot percussion. Here and throughout the album Rosenfeld significantly raises the standard of recorded dance, employing rhythmic sensitivity, a variety of sounds, and warm tones to add lift to both songs and tunes.

      Exuberant, tightly choreographed step-dancing bursts with energy in The Casey Set, while feet, double bass, and guitar provide supporting grooves for the melodies in The Hunter's Moon and The Hunt for Wild Flora. Other tune sets are just as compelling with no foot percussion, like the explosive I'm Waiting for You and the unhurried, older sound of the West Coast Reels.

      Produced by Pete Sutherland, Contented Minds creatively echoes a time when tunes, song, and dance were all part of the same experience.

      I first saw Cucanandy a few years ago when they played at the New Bedford Summerfest and then again a couple of years ago when they did a local house concert. Jason Cade had joined them by that time as their fiddler, and nicely rounded out the original trio of Mike Casey, Malke Rosenfeld, and Stephanie Johnston. Their first CD, HE DIDN'T DANCE, had just been released, and was an impressive debut album. This extremely talented quartet has the knack for researching music archives for original American Celtic music from North Carolina, Cape Breton, and other localities where Celtic ancestry is strong. They also display a formidable knowledge of Irish and Scottish music from the motherlands. The second CD, CONTENTED MINDS, continues to display the polished yet loose and comfortable charisma of the group. Malke's percussive dance separates this band from other traditional Celtic bands, and her flute and whistle expertise is evident throughout. Steph's incredibly sweet and clear voice is another band trademark, as well as her driving rhythm guitar work. Jason's fiddling is terrific, and he also plays mandolin and viola. Mike Casey is multi-talented as guitarist, flutist and whistle-player, as well as other instruments. Whether the band is playing reels, slip-jigs, ballads or lilting love songs, they are a class act.

      Catch this second CD if you have the first, or get both if you have neither, as word is out this band may take a break for awhile, law school for Jason, time off the road for Steph, and Mike and Malke are moving to the midwest. I wish them the best, and hope to see them reunited soon.

      Cucanandy does it again. "Contented Minds" continues the brilliance this Celtic-influenced step-dance band introduced with "He Didn't Dance". Check it out. Especially note the introduction to the 11th cut, 'Female Sailor Bold'. What original music!

          Sun Dial's debut is a fantastic neo psychedelic album. It sounds like it could have been recorded in the late sixties, but yet does not sound dated. The guitar work is terrific and the lyrics are very good. They are psychedelic poems without sounding dreary or what I consider light unoriginal, trite "hippy dippy" words. Instead the lyrics evoke trippy and dreamy images. I recommend this to all fans of not just psycehedelic music, but to anyone who wants to hear good rock music with intelligent lyrics.

          So in my opinion I would say grab it while u can. You get a true classic of Psychedelic Rock and an excellent second disc which sounds alot like my second favorite Sun Dial disc "Return Journey"which is a True Must Have for any self-respecting lover of True Psychedelic Rock. Pay what u must but get em!(You'll want them all).
