Album Description

Dusty Springfield was the finest female vocalist of her era, a performer of remarkable emotional resonance whose body of work spans the decades and their attendant musical transformations with a consistency and purity unmatched by any of her contemporaries. This wonderful collection compiles her complete surviving BBC sessions onto one CD for the very first time. The first three tracks, by The Springfields, includes their first single `Dear John' alongside two follow up singles `Swahili Papa' and `Say I Won't Be There'. This session and the following solo session in 1964 have only recently surfaced at the BBC, having been considered `lost' for a number of years. The album racks up five Top 10 hits alongside a string of album tracks and b-sides but most excitingly includes 'To Love Somebody', a cover of the Bee Gees classic that was originally recorded in Atlanta for inclusion in the seminal Dusty In Memphis album however that version was destroyed in a fire. This track and 'Tossing and Turning', 'Up Tight (Everything's Alright)', 'We're Doing Fine', 'Good Loving' and 'Higher and Higher (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me)' only exist in the BBC's archives. 22 tracks. Mercury.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Gift to Starved Dusty Fans.......2007-06-17

Whenever any lost song by the great Dusty Springfield turns up, it's an event for her fans, but when an ENTIRE ALBUM of rare or previously unreleased material hits the marketplace, well, it's a cause for celebration. Okay, so the sound quality on some of these tracks isn't the best, and the performances by the backing musicians might be a bit muddy here and there, or the arrangements similarly cluttered, but none of this takes away from the superb vocal performances. Dusty didn't think of herself as one of the Great Ones, and she was a notorious perfectionist in the studio, but the songs included here show her to be a gifted live performer. There's a rawness and a spontaneity here that makes listening to this a real treat for those of us who mostly know the studio album versions of many of these tunes, and have heard them so many times we have memorized every second of every sound and syllable.

The first three tracks, by The Springfields, did not overwhelm this listener, and impatience began to set in almost immediately. Then, a rushed, almost frantic rendition of "La Bamba" (with poorly pronounced Spanish lyrics) threatened to sink expectations for a sublime Dusty experience. But what followed was a surprising, energetic Motown-styled version of "Tossin' And Turnin'," and these ears began to perk up. An emotionally bare and intimate reading of "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" set up the rest of the CD, and from there it never let up.

Two very different performances of "I Can't Hear You No More" are included here, and it's a toss-up as to which is better. On the first one, the band really gets it going, The Echoes do their backup vocals just like they do on the record, but Dusty's singing is just shy of breaking apart. It's a powerful moment. The second version is a tad slower and more laid back, and has less of a wall of sound behind the vocals. It's also more like the album version. In between, a perfunctory "Wishin' & Hopin'," never a particular favorite of mine, manages to gain some interest by having a slightly kickier beat than the original single, and after that a beautifully sung version of her hit song, "Losing You" keeps this collection on the beam. The bass and drums on this one almost make it better than the original recorded studio version, and the backup vocalists are perfection itself. Another song that doesn't add any new ground is "In The Middle Of Nowhere," but it's typically well done by Dusty, and then she follows it up with a fun performance of the Charley & Inez Foxx hit, "Mockingbird," which features one of the Echoes in place of the second Dusty heard on the album version.

The final ten songs bump this CD up to the stratosphere. "Little By Little" is crystal clear and, I think, much better than the hit single version, which always sounded to me like it was recorded in a bathtub. Soul classics never put to vinyl by Dusty, "Uptight (Everything's Alright)," "We're Doing Fine," "Good Lovin," and (Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher And Higher" are all given the typical, devoted Springfield treatment. She clearly loved doing this kind of music. Two of Dusty's best known hits also come in this final stretch, an impassioned "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me," and "Son Of A Preacher Man," which may not include the perfection of the Memphis musicians, but Dusty sings it even better here, if that's possible.

For me, there are two transcendent moments on this CD: "Chained To A Memory," which is sung with heartbreaking immediacy, and Robin Gibb's "To Love Somebody," which was recorded during the Memphis sessions but lost in an infamous Atlantic warehouse fire (that also robbed the world of many other great artists' master recordings). It's a truly wonderfu gift to starved Dusty fans everywhere, not only to have this song at last, warts and all, but to have each and every one of these recordings.

I'm sure I'll wish that I could get rid of the announcer's voice at the beginning of many of these tracks, after I've listened a few times, but on the other hand, this is pop music history, so I guess I really don't mind too much. The mono and sometimes mirky recording quality of this CD made me tempted to only give it four stars, but that would be unfair, since these imperfections were anticipated. The songs, and Dusty's one-of-a-kind voice are what make THE COMPLETE BBC SESSIONS so special.

5 out of 5 stars LIVE DUSTY MAGIC.......2007-06-08

Having collected Dusty's records since the 60's, it's always great to have something different to add to your collection.

Most of Dusty's solo tracks on this cd were released exclusively through the Dusty Springfield Bulletin some years ago but on this new commercially released cd we had the addition of some of The Springfields hit rsongs and how well they sound LIVE!

All the tracks on the cd are from radio broadcasts and the quality is excellent, there are some of Dusty's huge hits like Son Of A Preacherman, Losing You, I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myselfg and her worldwide smash You Don't Have To Say You Love Me.
Tracks that Dusty never recorded in a studio such as Tossin' & Turnin' have a great early rawness that really adds to the performance, we also have The Bee Gees hits To Love Somebody - Dusty did record this but it was lost when there was either a fire or flood in the Atlanic studios.
Another point of interest is the inclusion of two different versions of I Can't Hear You (No More).
The Jackie Wilson hit (Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher & Higher is also another great performance from Dusty and the whole cd is such a welcome release.
Look out for the companion dvd to this set, it should be released late August so go ahead and treat yourelf to both!

5 out of 5 stars Get Ready!.......2006-06-23

With very little of the Rare Earth catolog in print, Rare Earth "The Collection", is without question the single best compilation available from the first caucasion rock group to be signed to Motown records by Berry Gordy. Rare Earth if only for a short time, delivered the goods that sent them to the top of the charts. Their take on "Get Ready", became a monster hit, originally tracking in at 21 minutes, like many a AOR cut of the late 60's and early 70's, it was trimmed down to the usual 4 minutes for 45 single release. Although you get the edited version on this cd, "Get Ready" remains one of the greatest rock covers of a soul hit to date. In case you forgot, these guys also had a touch of soul as well, as seen in their 1972 hit "I Just Want To Celebrate", which blended rock, soul and psychedelia to perfection. They cover Dave Mason's "Feelin Alright", like every other band of the day, but again, awesome guitar work on this version makes it one of the best takes of this classic ever waxed. If Joe Cocker had not had a hit record with his cover of the song, I would be willing to bet that this Rare Earth cover would have received tons of airplay, making it a hit. "Tobacco Road", is another standout along with "Magic Key" and "I'm Losing You". Lead vocalist and drummer Pete Rivera had a macho texture to his voice that is instantly recognized by anyone who listened to AOR in the early seventies. This compilation offers a generous 18 tracks for an attractive price, making it one of the best buys of classic rock and soul.

5 out of 5 stars the Dusty legacy.......2006-07-16

Yet another Dusty compilation - take your pick, there are so many but this is certainly one worth having. The remastering is generaly good and it's hard not to be reminded of the great sound quality Dusty was able to achieve on her records, especially in the early years when she was so actively involved on the production side of things. I want to pay particular tribute to Dusty's version of the Goffin/KIng song, "Goin' Back". The way that Dusty puts her peformance together is a master class in pop singing. As the orchestration of the song gains momentum, so too does Dusty's singing, but all within a carefully defined framework. No histrionics, this is not American idol type singing where the aim is to overwhelm or even destroy the song - when Dusty sang songs she really loved, she paid the ultimate tribute to the writers, telling the story. It is often said that Dusty was the greatest British female pop singer of all tme. I don't think this can be disputed - her musical inteligence was married with natural talent. She understood pop better than most of her contemporaries - male or female. Was she a better singer than Rod Stewart? Eric Bourdon? Other British male singers of reknown? Obviousy she was not as prolific as Rod Stewart and I don't think she ever would have tackled the great American songbook - her only efforts in that canon were not particularly impressive - but that may have been a production problem and unlike Stewart she recognised her strengths and by default her limitations (more signs of her inteligence). However at her best, her capacity to interpret a song, to turn it into a three minute masterpiece, emotive, restrained and exciting, puts her in a class of her own. Comparisons are futile since there was only ONE Dusty Springfield. Of course there are songs on this compilation which are not Dusty's greatest moments, she after all did cover some fairly ordinary songs, but I am always surprised at how there is something to discover, some little moment of clever singing, in even the least well written or poorly produced songs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-09-09

All the great slow beautiful songs of Dusty are here! Only one or two out of the 40 some odd songs disrupt the trance of these beautiful songs!

5 out of 5 stars Lovely 'Look'.......2004-10-31

Dusty Springfield was simply one of the greatest female interpretive singers, along with Judy Garland, Aretha Franklin, and Ella Fitzgerald.

This compilation of Dusty's best love songs features big hits ("You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", the title track) with lesser known releases ("Spooky", "Breakfast in Bed") and stunning interpretations (Barry Manilow's "Sandra" and Janis Ian's "In the Winter"). the live release of Dusty's version of Karla Bonoff's "Lose Again" is further proof that a Dusty Springfield live album is needed.

At 47 tracks, this is not only a fine career retrospective but an excellent sample of Dusty's talent.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Collection.......2004-04-15

This is a wonderful collection of ballads and love songs which goes beyond Dusty Springfield's hits to include many lesser-known gems. Although many of the songs on this album may be unfamiliar to American audiences, they are a revelation: Springfield's beautiful voice and emotional singing style are shown off to great advantage in the ballads which make up the majority of this album. Standout tracks include the Janis Ian-penned "In The Winter," which was not released until after Springfield's death, the pop standard "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life," and "Let Me Love You Once Before You Go." Also included is a live version of the Karla Bonoff song "Lose Again," which was recorded at Springfield's final concert in the UK in 1979 and has never before been released on CD.

Buyers should note that the version of the hit "I Only Want To Be With You" on this album is not the familiar version, but is an alternate vocal and mix.

I highly recommend this album - buy it and discover the amazing talents of the underappreciated Dusty Springfield.

This is one of my favorite CDs! David Cassidy's voice is better than ever. The song selections on this CD are relaxing and very bluesy! I listen to this CD after a hard day or whenever I need to unwind. Can't go wrong with this one!

5 out of 5 stars David's voice is amazing.......2007-01-10

The Touch of Blue CD is wonderful. David has such an amazing voice and this CD has a wide range of different songs that David normally doesn't sing or perform at his shows. My mother even enjoyed listening to it and was singing to some of the older songs she reconginezed. I was not at all disappointed that it had a jazzy beat to it.

5 out of 5 stars David Cassidy's Vocals are Like A Fine Wine.......2005-03-16

This tasty import is just a repackaging of the Universal U.S. version with a bonus disk of songs taken from David's "Then & Now" pevious release. The bonus disks contain the remakes of "Could It Be Forever", "Cherish","How Can I Be Sure", Daydreamer", "Some Kind Of Summer","I Write The Songs","If I Didn't Care","Looking Throuh The Eyes Of Love", "It's One Of Those Nights (Yes Love)", and "I Think I Love You". If you have "Then And Now" just buy the US version. Now, having said that, this is another great David Cassidy CD inspired one would think by his stage performances in "EFX" and "At The Copa". It has a very mature, bluesy aspect to it that is like a fine, mellow wine. David's vocals are still beautiful after all these years and he still sounds good in his mid-fifties as he did in the late seventies! Awesome remakes abound here and David embraces them and makes them his own. A smokey vocal version of the popular 60s song "Spooky" starts the disk off then segues into a bluesy "New York City Life". Silky smooth vocals follow on Paul McCartney's "Blackbird" and the beautiful "Since I Fell For You" The fifth cut is the wildly popular 60s remake of "Walk Away Renee" smoothly executed and brings the tempo up a beat. Next is the slower version of his Partridge hit "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" which he has done often in concert as well as the following "Hollywood Nights" yes, the Bob Seger song which takes the pace up even more. I love the way he does this here as much as he does it in concert. He sings the song with soul and a breathy sexuality. A wonderful rendition. "A Song For you" brings him back into the dark stage witha single spotlight. These are the ballad tunes David does so well. He still has it. The mood quickly changes to a mellower slower version of "Mother and Child Reunion". Great version. The background vocalists are clear and the ooh-oohs are reminiscent of the Partridge years. Rounding out the set is a mellow version of Extremes megahit love song "Mor Than Words". Nice harmonies that are reminiscent of his later RCA years. A great blues CD that proves that David just keeps maturing and getting better! Worth a spin!! But get the US version and save the high import costs if you already have "Then & Now" and forego the wasted extra disk of repeated material.

5 out of 5 stars bluer than blue.......2004-04-26

this is a great album done by Mr. Cassidy . there are songs on this one that make me want to close my eyes to imagine him singing these songs. Cherish is so good it makes me want to cry.... Mr. Cassidy definitely took his time with this one. which is a great thing for his fans like me.

5 out of 5 stars Great album sounds like the old big band music.......2004-03-30

This is definitly a good album i love the first disc with all the new tracks. like that person said it would be nice if david would not keep re realesing partridge family tunes. they are ok but his solo stuff is way better. Very good cover tunes on this one plus new york city life is great. thanks

5 out of 5 stars Classic Dusty Springfield.......2007-06-08

This is a great 2-CD set of Dusty Springfield, from when she first began recording through her tragically short career. For Dusty Springfield fans, the sound is crisp and clean and the songs bring back many fond memories...what's not to enjoy??

4 out of 5 stars Who Puts These Things Together?.......2005-10-20

While one can't argue with the price of this 2-CD set, one wonders why all these redundant compilations of Dusty's music are necessary? And, since most of them were released after her untimely death in 1999, there's a certain aroma of crass cashing in by serving what this writer calls the Necrophiliac Music Market. It seems every time a musician dies, their record sales skyrocket. It happened with Elvis, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, et al. In other words, who's raking in this dough? Certainly not the late great artist. And, therein lies the tragic irony of Dusty Springfield. It would appear Dusty has had more albums released after her way too early demise than she ever did in life. This is but one of many postmortem compilations floating around.

While the song choices cover just about every phase of Dusty's 40-year career, including her early days with The Springfields, their chronology has been totally ignored. Why this album doesn't begin with the Springfields' tracks followed by Dusty's first solo hit "I Only Want To Be With You" defies logic. Why the first disc ends with the Kurt Weill-esque "Soft Core" and the second disc begins with the insipid, non-Dusty hit "Close To You" is but one example of the disjointed, herky-jerky musical progression of this album. With no prevailing theme and no natural segues, this album leaves the listener confused and unsatisfied.

This writer gave it 4 stars only because it's Dusty. However, if you're truly a Springfield aficionado, might I suggest you pay the extra money and purchase the brilliant 4-disc compilation, "Simply Dusty" - the nearly 100 track, well-thought-out, chronological remastered compilation of Dusty's finest work.

Dust was one of the 20th Century's most gifted vocalists/musicians. While this album will give the listener more than a glimpse of her incredible talent, the way this set is organized will not accord the new Dusty Springfield fan the opportunity to hear how Dusty grew and changed as an artist. "Simply Dusty" tells the whole story - this set is merely disjointed fragments of a fantastic talent's life's work.

5 out of 5 stars Great 2CD set for Dusty fans and afficionados.......2005-03-06

"Classics and Collectibles" isn't simply yet another Dusty compilation cos it offers the original now-rarely-heard mono mixes of all except three of her British 60s singles and some genuine rarities that should appeal to fans and afficionados. Her biggest hits - inevitably the big ballads - are collected on the "Classics" CD. Her less well remembered hits - mostly uptempo numbers - are culled to accompany the rarities on the "Collectibles" CD.

If I had to pick one song from the "Classics" CD that truly stands out, it's the mono mix of "Goin' Back" - it's a thrilling experience listening to it because this long forgotten singles mix is aurally so different from the conventional stereo mix we have come to know and love.

The "Collectibles" CD is for afficionados where the goodies are at. Rarities to set the hearts of fans aflutter include "They Long To Be Close To You" with its Bacharach-styled musical intro restored, "The Corrupt Ones" preceded by a sequence of atmospheric studio chatter, an unedited "Heartbeat", alternative vocal takes of "Nothing" and "If Wishes Could Be Kisses", "Standing In The Need Of Love" (possibly the first song Dusty ever recorded as a solo artiste in late 1963), the original soundtrack version of "Sweet Ride" in terrific stereo, the rare singles mix of "Little By Little" (with distinctive backing vocals that go "ooh ooh" mysteriously excised from the stereo mix) and a much stronger stereo mix of "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" featuring alternative vocals from Dusty and audible background singers to close the CD. For completists, there's also the rare but much maligned "Sometimes Like Butterflies".

To cap it all, Universal used a rare but beautiful shot of Dusty (circa 64/65) indulging her musical tastes in her Baker Street flat. For once, the record company is making an effort with the packaging.

A great product. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Gems!.......2004-12-14

What a fabulous collection this is! Now, though I am not happy that they released some of her rare classics in mono mixes, I am still - however - glad that they put some huge rarities on here.

Awhile back, I ran across her 'Stay Awhile/I Only Want to...," CD, and found the unreleased song 'Standing in the Need of Love' just wonderful. Too bad it wasn't released years back when it was recorded. The other thing I like are the never-before-released stuff: The full-edit of '(They Long To Be) Close To You,' the stereo soundtrack version of 'Sweet Ride,' a previously unreleased song, 'I Have Found My Way Through the Darkness,' an alternate vocal take of 'I Am Your Child,' the single mix of Dusty's 1978 comeback song, 'I'm Coming Home Again,' another unreleased song, 'Sweet Inspiration,' an unreleased edit of 'The Corrupt Ones,' and, uh, at long last... the unreleased stereo version of Dusty's timeless hit, 'I Just Don't Know What To Do with Myself.' I am so glad that this is finally being issued; at last!

Get this CD, folks! I promise you... you won't be disappointed.

Album Description

This melancholy 1976 release includes what would be EJ's last Top 10 hit for three years ("Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word") and is loaded with numbers reflecting the ennui and burnout both John and Taupin were experiencing at the time ("Between Seventeen And Twenty," "If There's A God In Heaven [What's He Waiting For?]"). Elsewhere, John and Taupin write songs in tribute to Edith Piaf ("Cage The Songbird") and a depressingly debilitated Elvis Presley ("Idol"). Despite the inclusion of these and other heart-wrenching compositions like "Tonight," John's irrepressible upbeat attitude comes to the fore on tracks such as the Caleb Quaye instrumental "Your Starter For..." and "One Horse Town," a peppy song about life in the rural South. Most gratifying is a collaboration with the Reverend James Cleveland and his Southern California Choir on the funky "Boogie Pilgrim. Mercury. 2004.

With Slick Production Down to a Science, John and Bernie Taupin's Compositions Took a Decidedly Darker Tone as their Relationship Became Strained in the Face of Elton's Growing Dependence on Chemical Stimulants and the Pressures of Success. Following an Answer to the Question of his Sexuality in Rolling Stone, his Most Ardent Fans were the Only Ones to Truly Appreciate this LP at the Time of Release. As Time Passes, Critics and Fans Alike Still Come Back to the Fact that Most of These Tracks Are Simply Brilliant. The Opener of "Your Starter For/Tonight" is Simply Breathtaking, the Fun of "Crazy Water" and the Lush Harmonies of "Chameleon" (With Toni Tenille on Backing Vox) as Well as the Stunning "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" Are all Highlights of this Work that Still Stands as One of the Highlights of John's Celebrated Career.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Moody and Arty.......2007-06-22

Almost eight years into an extraordinary career, Elton John and Bernie Taupin had about had enough. There was tension, fatigue and substance abuse, and they were feeling the strain. "Rock of the Westies," while quite successful in its own right, was the least successful Elton John album since "Honky Chateau." They were both still chafing from the fact that critical acclaim seemed elusive, and "Blue Moves" was a bid to be taken seriously. Even the cover art begged the question, instead of the gaudy covers and glamour shots of old, Patrick Proctors' moody "The Guardian Readers" graced the folded sleeve.

But MCA seemed reluctant to really get behind another double album, Elton had announced his first "retirement," and then this ambitious album was a low-key, morose collection. Elton was trying to be a Gershwin, but he was trying to be something he wasn't quite capable of yet. That's not to say "Blue Moves" is lacking great songs; it is loaded with some amazing material. But is is also bloated, and unlike "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," filler abounds.

But as you listen to the dynamic opener, "Your Starter For...Tonight," a lot can be forgiven. Same for the "One Horse Town," which captures the energy of Elton at his finest. James Newton Howard and Paul Buckmaster's orchestral arrangements on these to songs alone provided a glimpse at what Elton was aiming for; they are absolutely brilliant songs. The songs dedicated to Edith Piaf, "Cage The Songbird," features Graham Nash and David Crosby on background vocals, and is a strong companion to "Candle In The Wind."

Problem is, the songs are all morose and depressing. Only "Boogie Pilgrim" and the funky "Bite Your Lip" push the smiles, and it is one of "Blue Move's" detractions. The weighty themes ("If There's A God In Heaven, (What's He Waiting For?)"), the instrumentals and the lack of an obvious single (even if "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" has become a classic), coupled with the over-saturation of Elton on the airwaves, "Blue Moves" all factor into "Blue Moves" initial reception. Had Elton and Bernie been willing to treat this as a single album (the original CD was trimmed of a few songs), they might have been able to keep on target. As it stands, however, it's gained luster over the years. Make sure to get the remastered version, because it brings out the magic of the arrangements that Elton and company were striving for.

5 out of 5 stars This album was a lifeline to me.......2007-02-06

When this album came out, I was a 15 year old trapped in a bad home in a small town in western Oklahoma. The songs and sounds on this album reminded me that there was a larger world out there. It was my own private sanctuary. I would pop my cassette into my Walkman and step out of my life for a few dozen minutes.

For the next couple of years, this music provided something of a soundtrack to my life; memories of friends and girlfriends, hanging out with my buds all come rushing back when I listen to it now.

Is the music here dated? Yes. It sounds like the mid-80s rock/pop that it is, but is that so wrong? Is it throw-away? No.

3 out of 5 stars Rock and Soul - Part 2.......2004-12-10

By the time 1986 would come around, Daryl Hall would have reached the apex of his career. This apex was largely achieved from his success as part of the duo, Daryl Hall and John Oates - which was now being proclaimed as "the most successful Rock and Roll duo in history. In 1984, Hall and Oates would release their most successful album "Big Bam Boom". They would then follow that up with a live album "Live at the Apollo" that would piggyback on their historic performance at Live Aid with Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin. Following these works, the duo would need to recharge. As part of this recharge, Daryl Hall would go ahead and put together a solo album. This solo album "Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine" would be released in 1986. Although this was a solo album, the sound still followed the formula that Hall would follow as part of Hall and Oates. That formula would be a mix of Rock and Soul.

Many people view "Three Hearts.." as Daryl Hall's first solo effort. This was actually his first effort that would be noticed. Six years prior to the release of "Three Hearts..", Hall released a solo album called "Sacred Songs". However it would be "Three Hearts" that would land Hall a great deal of attention. As mentioned above, Hall uses the "Rock and Soul" formula that worked so successfully as part of Hall and Oates. He also brings in a solid cast to support him on this album. The Eurythmics' Dave Stewart who handles co-producing the album with Tom "T-Bone" Wolk and Daryl Hall himself. Stewart also plays a major songwriting role on six tracks. I think Dave Stewart is one of the most underrated people to have in your studio. Also particpating are Bob Geldof (background vocals on "Only a Vision"), Joni Mithcell (background vocals on "Right as Rain"), and the Fixx's Jamie West-Oram (Guitars). Finally, the master of mix - Bob Clearmountain handles the mixing of all of the songs on the album.

The album kicks off with the strongest song of the collection - "Dreamtime". This song was a Top 5 hit for Daryl Hall. This is one terrific song. This song falls more on the "Rock" side of the fence. This song is loaded with terrific music and terrific lyrics. For starters, Hall employs a String Ensemble for this song. There also are some incredible guitar and drum work in this song. The lyrics are loaded with some great lines such as "Rain comes down movin' you fast away", "Standing there is the man with the movie star eyes" (Hall gives credit to Bob Dylan for this line), "The man with the plan that will see you thru", and "I never saw anyone fall aprt so fast". Hall himself delivers a very passionate performance. This song has basically fallen into 80s oblivion - and that is a shame because it is a great song. The bar is set high with such a great song. While the rest of the album has some moments, the bad news is that most of the rest of the album doesn't live up to this song.

For the most part, the rest of the album doesn't follow the lead that "Dreamtime" sets. In fact, most of the remaining 9 songs fall closer to the R&B and Soul side. One song that falls on the "Rock" side is "Let It Out". I can best describe "Let It Out" as Daryl's version of an Arena Rock song. I wouldn't classify it as a hard rock song, but Hall delivers it in an "Arena Rock" fashion. It's a good, but not great song - and certainly not in the class of "Dreamtime". To some extent, I'd put "What's Gonna Happen to Us" into a quasi-Rock category.

Most of the other songs follow the R&B and Soul side of things. These songs include: "Only a Vision", "I Wasn't Born Yesterday", "Someone Like You", "For You", and"Foolish Pride". To some extent I think "Right as Rain" is a good cross of the "Rock and Soul" connection. The song "Next Step" has almost a funk sound to it. I don't think that comes off well.

As mentioned, there are some moments in the other songs. "I Wasn't Born Yesterday" is co-written by Stewart, Hall, and Hall's long-time girlfriend Sara Allen (i.e. "Sara Smile"). "I Wasn't Born Yesterday" also features some terrific sax tracks as well as some nice vocals. "Foolish Pride" has a primarily an R&B sound, but also has a nice Rock intro. "Foolish Pride" is also a pretty catchy song. The collection's finale is "What's Gonna Happen to Us". This song is an exclusively written Hall song and it is probably one of the few songs in which you will hear Hall make any sort of socio-political statements in his lyrics. The song has such lyrics as "I saw on the TV we're selling Arms to the enemy .... And men in power places are resigning ... Here comes another savior to stir the soliders in the field; But what do the generals think about while the soliders are dying". This song is interesting because in the second verse Hall gets a little more personal by saying "Does your shrink say find out who you are; Before you become a part of me". This might not be one of the most catchy songs on the collection, but it still is a pretty good because of the lyrics.

The lyrics to all of the songs are included. All songwriting, production, and musician credits are listed in the liner notes. While overall, this isn't the strongest music you are going to find, (as mentioned above) there are several cases where the CD really shows it has its moments. This album seems to be a very hard find today. If you can manage to get this CD, I would advise it.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely Has Its Moments.......2003-06-08

Arriving just at the end of Hall & Oates' phenomenal streak of success in the early '80s, 3 Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine, Daryl Hall's second solo album, was viewed as the first overture in a solo career but, in retrospect, its kinship with his first solo effort, 1980's Sacred Songs, is apparent. There is some indication that Hall had to make, or wanted to make, some concessions to bring it onto the charts - how could he not, he was one of the most popular musicians of his era - but that's not particularly evident on the tremendous lead single, "Dreamtime," a swirling slice of arty new wave psychedelia that stands in direct contrast to anything Hall & Oates sent into the Top Ten - it might have belonged on Sacred Songs or X-Static, but it could only have been cut in the mid-'80s when Hall had the freedom to make a record like this. And this is a result of an artist who is given the freedom to make close to the record that he wants, with a few commercial concessions, plus a desire to make a modern record. That does mean 3 Hearts is a bit tied to the time, particularly in its production with its clean synths and cavernous drum machines, but that's not necessarily a bad thing since it's primarily of interest as a portrait of where Hall was in 1986. He's not as insistently melodic as he is with Oates, nor is he as experimental as he was on Sacred Songs, and that does mean that 3 Hearts falls in a middle ground that's a bit neither here nor there. And that means it's not particularly cohesive, but it does have its moments, the brightest of which is "Dreamtime," one of his greatest achievements. There are other songs here that aren't quite as good, but it does take a bit of searching to find them, particularly because some of the cuts are either failed experiments or just fall flat. But those moments that do work illustrate that Hall had ambitions that couldn't fit Hall & Oates, and needed an outlet like this, even if he couldn't quite pull it all together all the time. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

5 out of 5 stars Daryl Hall at his best for all H&O fans.......2003-03-16

I'm surprised by all the reviews. I tought the 3 hits song on this album were "Dreamtime" (02.08.86 Top 5), "Foolish Pride" (18.10.86 top 33) and "Someone Like you" (24.01.87 Top 57) on US billboard. Not to mention "I Wasen't Born Yesterday" that really rocks! Of course all other songs are great but a top hit is based on the billboard ratings... I would else say that all the songs on the albums are top hits! :) If your a fan of Hall and Oates because of their special sound. "Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine" is worth the price! Do not miss "Do it for Love" the most recent Hall and Oates album which is their best album since "Big Bam Boom". Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Three Hearts In The Happy Ending Machine.......2003-02-12

To be honest, I thought I was not going to like this CD because I didn't like Sacred Songs. To my surprise and delight, Three Hearts is very good. I loved Hall's voice when he was with Oates and Sacred Songs just didn't do it for me, but this one did. The songs are well written, arranged and performed. I don't think you could go wrong with this one if you like Hall's work.

From the OBJECTIVE reviewer..."Shine on Through" is the one decent song, but Elton and pop disco don't work well together.

4 out of 5 stars Elton shows serious soul..........2004-11-05

Jimmy Wade's review was right on - this one is a hidden gem from Elton. Of the tracks on the EP, only "Mama Can't Buy You Love" went in the Top 40 at the time, though recently the reissued "Are You Ready For Love?" topped the charts in the US and England. What's most interesting about the disc is the range of material. As Jimmy notes, it's not really a "disco" album - just pure, good Philly Soul, most of the tracks done w/ the Spinners (I think they play on all the tracks, though they don't sing on all of them) and all produced by Thom Bell. The mixes of the songs originally included on the vinyl 3 song EP in 1979 are (as Jimmy points out) NOT the Elton John/Clive Franks mixes, but the original Bell mixes. The complete EJ/Clive Franks mixes can, however, be found as addl. tracks on the CD single for "The Last Song", and "Are You Ready For Love?" and "Three Way Love Affair" are on the recent single edition of "Are You Ready...?" Pick it up and give it a spin - it's a lot of fun and very well done. Check out "Country Love Song" and "Nice and Slow" - these would have been great singles at the time as well! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Amazon.com!.......2004-09-23

I would like to Thank Amamzon.com for sending me this materpiece. It is, in my opinion, one of his best albums. It does geta reputation of beinga disco album but listening closely there's only really a definite Gospel feel on every track. You can hear his voice progress from his young days into his latter day lower register voice through the course of this album. I like how even though it's mid-late seventies R&B there are other styles that can be heard in the mix. I like the strings, they give it a majectic feel. There is not that much synthesiser, except on the track three way loev affair. There is a definite disco feel to some of the songs, others are more like straight R&B. My favourite two songs are Three way love affair and Ncie and Slow.

5 out of 5 stars Elton John meets Philly Soul... how cool is that?.......2004-06-22

This should be one of the best-known and most beloved moments in Elton John's career - but it isn't. Two iconic sounds of the 70's combine and the result is rich, buttery ear candy - but it gets consistently glossed-over when people run down the handful of enduring pop music from the disco era. Elton makes his bid to be one of the great blue-eyed-soul singers of his time - and few even notice. Elton would quickly move on from here, but echoes of this benchmark can be heard in all that follows. A true forgotten classic in every sense.

5 out of 5 stars Dynamic Duo is Heavenly!.......2007-06-07

Okay folks, I'm not going to even bother with trying to wax all eloquent on this review. Considering the subject matter- the great Blue Jays- I wouldn't know how to anyway. If you don't like gushy, mushy females then I urge you to stop reading this RIGHT NOW. I'm just gonna spell this out real plain and simple like: For a gal like me who is absolutely and totally smitten with both Justin Hayward and John Lodge(espec. JL) this album is just pure, unadulterated, sheer HEAVEN!!!!

Let's face it: these two supremely talented men were fated to sing, write and play their great music together, whether as part of the Moody Blues or as a duo. I really appreciate how Hayward and Lodge (even their names sound good together!) both complement and contrast one another on so many different levels. One man is all light and innocence, almost too pretty. The other one dark and mysterious, dangerously sexy. The rocker and the balladeer. The soaring guitar and the funky bass. When J & J join their so different voices in harmony there is nothing else quite like it. I love how their vocals weave and blend together so seamlessly, almost effortlessly. No one else sounds like them and let's be totally honest here: Hayward and Lodge, for the most part, are the phenomenal sound of the Moody Blues.

I really have tried my best to listen to this record with a critical spirit, wanting to find some flaw but I simply haven't found one yet. I have analyzed the songs, picked them to death, and still they remain perfect. There simply just isn't a bad track to be had, not even one.
I am hard pressed to name my favorite song as they are all so very great. If I could only pick two(impossible to pick just one) to take with me on a deserted island, then it would have to be 'Blue Guitar' and 'Remember Me, my Friend'. But I also love the hauntingly beautiful 'Maybe', the type of song that John's ethereal-sounding voice is just custom-made for. For me to comment on each song would be, quite frankly, fruitless and a tad boring, as I would only be repeating myself ad nauseum. To sum them up in a nutshell: all 11 songs on this CD were beautifully written/sung by Hayward and Lodge, aka Blue Jays.

If you are a fan of The Moody Blues you will appreciate the Blue Jays. If you are a Justin Hayward lover, then you will treasure this album. If you are an admirer of John Lodge, then this will give you one more reason to do so.

5 out of 5 stars Where's the SACD ?.......2007-02-16

I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviewers-this is the best of the solo Moodies ventures of the '70's...And here's the kicker-It was briefly available as a Quadraphonic 4 channel reel-to-reel tape, just as all the Moody Blues albums through "Seventh Sojourn" except "Magnificent Moodies" (1st LP) and "In Search of the Lost Chord" (3rd LP) were. Well, ALL the Moody multi-channels have been re-issued as SACDs, so where's the re-issue in 5.1 of "Blue Jays" ? We need to make some noise, fellow fans, because THIS ALBUM WAS THE BEST MULTI-CHANNEL RELEASE by ANY artist I'VE EVER HEARD ! No, I'm not imagining it was, you see, I still own my 4-channel tape deck and all my 4-channel tapes ! I can assure you that you haven't really heard this awe-inspiring masterpiece in the way it was really intended until you've heard it in discrete surround sound. It is the sonic jewel of my entire audio collection ! Indeed, it is my favorite Moody Blues release-including all Moody Blues albums-that is the power it has in multi-channel ! Polygram, LET'S SEE THIS RE-ISSUED ON 5.1 SACD or 5.1 DVD-audio, please !

5 out of 5 stars Two of the Moody Blues.......2005-10-30

Let's start with the basics. This album was released while the Moody Blues were on hiatus, trying to decide whether they had things to contribute musically individually versus as a group. This album was recorded in the mid-70s, and it sounds like mid-70s soft rock. The music sounds very much like the Moody Blues, though not quite, since the talents of Mike Pinder, Ray Thomas and Graeme Edge are missing. So while there is no mistaking that this album is by members of the Moodies, it is still not quite the same.

What characterizes the songs on this CD the most are the harmonies. Justin Hayward and John Lodge have always harmonized well, and those harmonies are exploited for full effect on this album. Listen to "You," "My Brother," "I Dreamed Last Night" and "Who Are You Now" and you will see what I mean. These two are masters of mellow rock.

In fact, if you are looking for a romantic evening in front of the fire place with your favorite guy or girl, and a bottle of wine, and are looking for listening music, not talking music, pop this in, turn out the lights, and listen. This music will make you so mellow and feel so good that you'll not want to move, except for cuddling, of course!

This album was recorded with the fully matured voices of Justin Hayward and John Lodge. Their voices alone could have carried any of these songs. The songs are well performed, giving musical credence even to the weakest of lyrics on this album. Conversely, when the lyrics match well with the music and either or both of their voices, the songs are unstoppable. It's almost a good thing that this pair didn't record more albums separate from the Moody Blues because I'm not sure the world was ready for that many blues songs with so much feeling.

Bonus! This album includes Justin Hayward's solo song "Blue Guitar." The tone of this song fits well with the rest of the album, and helps to extend the length of the album to better make use of the time available on a CD, recalling that "Blue Jays" was originally recorded on vinyl. Furthermore, having "Blue Guitar" at the end makes you wish the album wouldn't end, so you have to go back and play it over again. Or pop in a Moody Blues album.

Do you like the Moody Blues, particular from the classic years? Do you like the songs John Lodge and Justin Hayward (who has one of the most unique voices in rock/pop music, ever)? Do you like mellow or romantic rock music? Why are you still reading this review? This album is excellent.

This album is one of at least two versions available. Since the prices and features vary between albums, you may wish to determine what is available before buying.

5 out of 5 stars Blue Jay Way.......2005-03-29

I was so glad to see this in CD form -- my record LP of "Blue Jays" was long lost in the '70's. Unlike so much, this was as I remembered it, romantic and lush. Nobody does nostalgic longing better than Justin Hayward. "Nights Winters Years" seems a little over the top to some, to me, its just original 7 producer Tony Clarke giving the song a deserved cosmic treatment. "This Morning", "Saved By the Music" and the haunting "Blue Guitar" are among the standout tracks, but every song on this CD is memorable and well produced.

This CD is in my all time top 10.

5 out of 5 stars Can't believe no-one has reviewed this album before!.......2005-03-26

Possibly a biased view from an old and long-time fan both of these guys as a group and individually:

A beautiful contribution by Justin and John to the MB's collection of music. A little sad, but they ARE the BLUE Jays! Like most of their music it may take a little listening to get used to, but take the time. "I dreamed last night" and "Who are you now" are my special favourites - just listen to those strings!

I have heard comments that the orchestration is overblown and the songs sometimes pretentious - everyone is entitled to their opinion. The Moody Blues make life just that much more worthwhile.
