Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best compilation of a single composer's works. Ever!.......2007-05-06

Claude Debussy is perhaps the most understated composer in the history of man. His ability to compose both on the piano and for orchestra is unmatched, in my humble opinion. The fact that Debussy was able to also arrange many contemporary and previous composers' works just adds to his resume. He had a gift, pure and simple.

Although this album doesn't (well, honestly it couldn't) contain all of Debussy's catalog, it does certainly contain some of his best work. There is actually only one track on this CD that I don't care for; that would be Golligwogg's Cake-Walk; it is just a bit annoying to me.

Beyond my dislike for that one track, the entire CD is a beautifully aranged, beautifully played, well recorded compilation with good sound mixing and it is a respectful tribute to a truly great composer.

"Claire de Lune" (Moonlighting) is perhaps one of the most gorgeous pieces of music ever composed; this is the orchestrated version, which I prefer, but the piano version is nice. "Arabesque No. 1" is superb. "Fetes" is both haunting and airy. "Reverie" is the best piano piece I have ever heard. "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is also a wonderful piano piece. "The Sunken Cathedral" is dark and mysterious, a true wonder.

The rest of the album is fantastic. Listed above are just my personal favorites from the disc. I listen to this CD at least once a week, but often more. It is perfect for relaxation, for listening while reading, or for my personal favorite use, to block out noise while I am writing.

I would recommend this to any classical lover.

If you have not heard Debussy's music, you must get this CD; it will have you ordering more of his compositions almost immediately.

The man was a genius.

5 out of 5 stars This is a brilliant assembly of Debussy. .......2006-07-08

After listening to his "Greatest Hits," I know why he is considered one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE STUFF RIGHT HERE!.......2005-09-12

I BOUGHT THIS BECAUSE I WAS TRYING EXPAND MY HORIZONS, YOU KNOW? CULTURALLY AND MENTALLY, YOU KNOW? SERIOUSLY THOUGH I WAS IN THE SHOP AND I WAS HAVING A GAZE AROUND THE PLACE AND THEN THIS PICTURE JUST JUMPS OUT AT ME, AND I PICKED IT UP AND IT WAS THIS DEBUSSY CHAP AND ID HEARD ABOUT HIM ON THE BBC LEARNING ZONE SO I THOUGHT ;why not?; SERIOUSLY THOUGH I DRAGGED IT HOME AND I POPPED IT IN THE OLD CD PLAYER AND IT FLOORED ME.......I MEAN SERIOUSLY THIS THING...AMAAZING STUFF..I MEAN TODAYS MUSIC HAS NOTHING, NOTHING NOTHING ON THIS STUFF RIGHT HERE.

SOME GOOD TRACKS ARE:
TRACK 1 IS THE BEST. THE OPENING FLUTE ON THE TRACK IS TOTALLY CHILLED AND COOL, REMINDS ME A BIT OF TRACK 13 ON ILL COMMUNICATION BY THE BEASTIE BOYS...A COINCIDENCE???

THE ONLY WEAK TRACK ON THE ALBUM IS TRACK 6, THE UNFORTUNATELY TITLED "CHILDRENS CORNER SUITE: GOLLIWOGGS CAKE WALK" THE MUSIC IS JUST DATED MAN, JUST AS DATED AS THE TITLE.

OVERALL THOUGH THIS IS A QUALITY ALBUM, WITH CHILLS, SPILLS AND THRILLS. SERIOUSLY THOUGH A FINE EFFORT.

5 out of 5 stars Debussy is the best. Ever........2004-07-23

I love Debussy and all of his brilliant work. I barely listen to any other classical music, so I am not an authority, just an honest lover of music. I play piano and love piano music, so I was not disappointed at a piano Flaxen-Haired Girl. I've never heard an orchestrated version and don't need to. This is a good introductory CD to Debussy's work, I love it! The only thing I don't care for is the Arabesque #1 (Track 9). The horn is kind of grating and clunky to hear in such an otherwise beautiful piece. Still, its interesting and different. Everything Debussy made is purest gold.

5 out of 5 stars i am dumb.......2004-07-01

And I'm a doomass because I didn't proof-read my other review and I wrote that Clair de Lune was performed by piano on this disc, which it isn't. Anyway, the piano version is better.

Based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale The Princess and the Pea, Once Upon a Mattress opened in May 1959 and was a solid success, if not a huge blockbuster. It did well enough, in any case, to warrant a 1997 revival starring Sarah Jessica Parker. The show was far from revolutionary, but it provided a really fun vehicle for a cast of top stage personalities, including black actress Jane White, who played Queen Aggravain (a part originally written for comedienne Nancy Walker) in whiteface. But of course, Once Upon a Mattress's heart and soul was Carol Burnett, who, in her Broadway debut created the part of Princess Winnifred and delivered two of Mary Rodgers's best songs, the hilarious "Shy" and the spunky "Happily Ever After," which sounds a bit like Jule Styne at his most rhythmic. Burnett's timing and performance remain as sharp as they were 40 years ago. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Mattress" CD was excellent.......2007-01-09

I've really enjoyed this CD. I only wish the play was available on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars an oldie but a goodie.......2006-03-15

Loved Carol Burnett then and love her now. This original cast CD is a lovely trip down memory lane.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like the original -- .......2006-01-30

No offense to any of the subsequent "Freds" but Carol Burnett OWNS this role. The recording is as fresh and funny as anything being done today and this is the version musical theatre fans should have in their library. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-01-22

My school did this musical last year (Spring 2005) and I had never heard of it before, so I bought both the Revial and the Original Cast Recordings. Fell in love. I was Sir Harry and loved both songs that I sang in. In my opinion, those are the two best songs in the entire musical, but then again, I'm biased.

Once Upon A Mattress OCR is by far the best out there. Don't get me wrong, the Revival Cast did a wonderful job (soundtrack at least) But There is something about Carol Burnett. She was meant to sing be Fred. But one thing that I didn't like is that "The Minstrel, the Jester & I" wasn't in this recording. But that is really the only problem I had with this.

My fav songs include:
In a Little While (because I sang it)
Yesterday I Loved You (again, I sang it)
Many Moons Ago
Shy

Would I recomend this CD? YES I WOULD!! I would shout it from the rooftops that people should by this CD! It's a funny, quaint little musical that people need to know about. I LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars I saw the original on Broadway.......2005-12-19

Once Upon a Mattress was one of the first Broadway shows that I ever saw and I was totally mesmorized and laughed so hard that my side hurt. Carol Burnett was the perfect person to play Fred and it was one of those magical performances that stays with you for a lifetime. The original cast album captures the fun and spirit of the show.

Later during the run of the show a friend of mine joined the chorus and when we talked about the experience, he told me that the joy that was on stage was similar to that felt by the cast and that was apparent on the album. They especially liked working with Ms. Burnett as she was a giving and caring actress.

I recommend this album to anyone who wants to spend some time just feeling good.

This commemorative reissue of music from 2001: A Space Odyssey combines the Also sprach Zarathustra theme, various Johann and Richard Strauss segments, and a ballet suite by Aram Khachaturian--all of which prove how much Stanley Kubrick's film attempts to avoid the soundtrack clichés of most science-fiction movies. Instead of the expected sci-fi effects, there is a more ironic application of music that would be otherwise incongruous to the celestial settings. Here, "The Blue Danube" complements scenes involving weightlessness and descending spacecraft, while Gyorgy Ligeti's creepy "monolith" music connotes Armageddon more than interplanetary exploration. The tracks play as they had appeared on the original soundtrack release back in the '60s, but there is also previously unreleased supplemental material and a dialogue montage entitled "HAL 9000." --Joseph Lanza

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great music, great reissue.......2007-04-16

This is a great collection of music and I love the great mastering job that was done with this. The inclusion of the tracks from the original MGM soundtrack release are a great bonus. The liner notes include interpretations of the film and the music that are insightful.

I noticed that the music in the movie is mixed in surround sound, it would be great if they could release this on DVD-Audio or SACD surround. I'd buy it again!

5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2007-03-11

I have the old lp release of this music, what an incredible array of classical music, topped off by my personal favorite piece of music in the world, the blue danube waltz. Let yourself be carried away in deep space by this incredible score.

5 out of 5 stars whoa........2006-09-04

"Atmospheres" was enough to make me buy this album. just try to imagine what eternity might sound like. okay, now you know exactly what Atmospheres is. wow. who else could having captured the feelings that are in this score? this is above talented. this is above genius. this is above avand garde. this is too good to be labeled as anything at all.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music for Halloween, very creepy.......2006-03-17

I bought this CD to use for a haunted house program, the music will creep you out.

5 out of 5 stars Bleakest of Futures..........2005-10-08

The atonal, unsettling atmosphere of much of the music of Ligeti is fitting to the bleak vision of a human future reigned by nothing but cold technology and of humans drained of emotions except for the deepest animalist fear originating from our inner reptilian brainparts which have not changed for over millions of years. The incongruity of Johann Strauss' lovely 'An der schönen blauen Donau' with the cold technicality of spacefaring as depicted here could not be more complete, but what a perfect find on Stanley Kubrick's part! It makes the uneasiness and confusion even greater. And then, to top it of, the complete and flabbergasting irony of using Richard Strauss' Fanfare for the 'rise of Man' in his 'Also Sprach Zarathustra': what a great destiny for 'Man' indeed, this bleakest of bleak visions of the future!
As a soundtrack for '2001: A Space Odyssey' this music together on one album is just great.
And besides, this soundtrack has indeed, like so many others I guess, made me aware of the genius of Ligeti, which otherwise might have gone unnoticed for me.

Soundtracks are a mixed bag at best. Some are little more than an assortment of pieces, but others hang together effectively on their own, like this one. The idea of Chinese music--both popular and operatic--juxtaposed with the sounds of Nat King Cole performing Latin music might seem bizarre, but it works beautifully, sustaining a lush, romantic mood created both by the strings and the '40s Chinese music, itself a tinkling Hollywood pastiche. But as atmospheric as all this is, one track stands out above the others: "Blue," actually a version of the classic "St. James' Infirmary," takes on another dimension in Chinese hands. While familiar but completely alien at the same time, the slithering Asian sonorities mesh perfectly with the African-American form to create something evocative but with a sadness that goes beyond blues. The movie is of a time and place; the soundtrack is of a mood and yearning. Listen at night, with someone you love close by. --Chris Nickson

4 out of 5 stars Awsome Instrumental Music.......2007-03-09

The soundtrack is really good; I didn't like some of the songs (the Chinese ones) but there are only 3 in the whole CD. The instrumental music is awesome making the soundtrack an average good.

4 out of 5 stars The Bing Crosby songs are very good but...........2006-07-17

In my opinion it`s the Bing Crosby-songs that makes this album worth buying, but these songs can be bought on compilations. The rest of the music is for people with special interest for backgroundmusic in films.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING! Hauntingly beautiful..........2006-05-09

So beautiful and emotional, it makes you want to cry! The score for the film and the collection of music together is absolutely breathtaking....

5 out of 5 stars A great soundtrack for a lover of WKW films.......2006-03-22

I loved the film, so I love the soundtrack, which brings back memories of the film. WKW uses period music to evoke the emotions and feel of the time period of the film.

5 out of 5 stars as gorgeous as the film!.......2006-02-11

Film soundtracks are often disappointing---there are songs from the movie that are not on the CD, songs on the CD that were not in the film, different versions of songs on the CD than in the film, etc.

Happily, this soundtrack is absolutely faithful to the film, and it is masterfully interwoven with dialogue excerpts from the film which complement and build on the music instead of being obtrusive. I don't understand a word of Chinese but still enjoyed listening to the actors' voices, and also liked the bits of traditional Chinese music as well. There are some tracks that I don't remember from the film but they are not throw-away filler in any way, just beautiful extras in the same vein.

I agree with Mr Hazelwood. This recording is lack luster and I usually like Michael Murray's recording. Too much brass and no organ. I agree that Columbia (Sony) should re-release the E. Power Biggs Music or Organ Brass and Percussion. That is the best recording and the correct mixture of instrments I have heard in a long time. I recently sent them (Columbia) an e-mail making that request. Maybe if they get enough e-mails, they would know that we demand the best of the best.

1 out of 5 stars Where's the Organ?.......2006-02-19

What a big disappointment! How can so many exciting pieces of music be made to sound so dull? Someone should take a torch to Mr. Murray's organ bench; pehaps then there would be some fire to his performance. The Richard Strauss processional has been a longtime favorite of mine, but this lackluster pressing is beyong decent! Please, Columbia, re-release the E. Power Biggs recording of many of the same selections ruinrd on yhis CD!

5 out of 5 stars Would Definitely Recommend!!.......2005-09-30

I enjoy all types of music. I think that this CD would appeal to anyone, not just classical fans. The musical selections are high energy and powerful.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Superb!.......2005-07-13

It's hard to fathom the restraint of some of the prior reviewers' praise of this CD. As you would expect from any Telarc "fully digital" recording, the overall sonic impact is gratifyingly dynamic, and the performances are impeccable. Moreover, many supremely masterful composers are included-several of whom you might otherwise never encounter. At this price, buying this highly enjoyable CD is a no-brainer.

5 out of 5 stars Ever wondered what was before Bach, Lully, or Palestrina?.......2007-04-29

During the days of the Renaissance, the madrigal was one
of the most popular musical forms and outputs. The King's Singers, a modern-day all male vocal group, demonstrate the authentic sound of which these 34 chosen madrigals may have been performed. In the Renaissance, in place of sopranos and altos, there were countertenors (men who sang falsetto in a feminine range). That's what these guys do; just listen to the first few and you'll automatically be transported back to this magical and sort of other-worldly time. If you've been to Renaissance fairs, it will make you think of those, too.

The King's Singers offer 34 well-chosen madrigals from composers like John Dowland, Hans Leo Hassler, Clement Jannequin and some composers who wished to remain anonymous. They are grouped by the different languages to show that the madrigal wasn't just the rage in Italy where it had originated but at various other places all over Europe, the hub of the music world. The Italian ones come first, then in English, French, Spanish and German. The best one in the set is "La Guerre" which runs 6 minutes, and is an incredible vocal showpiece. It's even very funny at times.

If you want to hear exactly how Renaissance madrigals sound, this is the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars Travel in Time with Ensemble De Organographia.......2005-12-13

To hear the music that maybe Alexander the Great or Julius Ceaser (or even Jesus Christ) had heard - it`s a miracle! And this re-creation of antique music sounds most lively and sincere for me (comparing with record by Atrium Musicae de Madrid). You could understand the ancient culture through spirituality and emotions of the ancient people. Philip Neuman and Gayle Stuwe Neuman play the music on the instruments re-created by their own hands. Ensemble De Organographia performs it in very colourful manner, so you could listen to this CD as to record of live folk world music, not as to dry academic experiment in archeology of music.
Ensemble De Organographia re-created even Sumerian music. Their CD "The Music of Ancient Sumerians, Egyptians and Greeks" I also highly recommend for the lovers of the ancient music.
You could find both CDs on www.northpacificmusic.com.

5 out of 5 stars In some ways, even better than "Musique de la Grece antique".......1999-07-07

This recording is at once more complete in its textual basis, more clear and bright in its production, and in many cases better performed, than the earlier recording "Musique de la Grece antique" by Atrium Musicae (Harmonia Mundi CD -- also sold by Amazon.com). It is a superbly done, even haunting recording. But though Gayle Neuman has a beautiful voice, she is but one singer -- and I miss the richness of the instrumentation and the vocal variety found on the earlier recording. But you can't beat the liner notes, or the photo of the instrument replicas that is included with the liner notes.

I find it fascinating that Philip Neuman & Co., in reconstructing the original instruments for this recording, came up with very nearly the same tone colors that Atrium Musicae did with their reconstructions. So far as I know, there was no collaberation between the two groups -- least of all in their approaches to the ancient music. The Neumans and William Gavin sought a quasi-archaeological "authenticity"; Atrium Musicae, to infuse new life into the music through their own spirits. Comparing the results is like comparing the arrangements of the same song, "My Heart Will Go On", performed by Celia Dion and Kenny G: they seem alike, and yet very much unlike.

Album Description

Today Bobby Hutcherson is one of the established giants of mainstream modern jazz. But in 1965, He was on the cutting edge of experimentation, working with Jackie McLean, Eric Dolphy, Andrew Hill and Archie Shepp. The personnel on Dialogue, his first album as a leader to be released, reads like a who's who of the creative front in jazz at the time: trumpeter Freddie Hubbarrd, reedman Sam Rivers, pianist/composer Andrew Hill, bassist Richard Davis and drummer/composer Joe Chambers.

Rudy Van Gelder's vivid recording style captures all nuances of this amazing album. Added to the original LP is Andrew Hill's "Jasper" from the session.

Produced by Alfred Lion. Recording engineer: Rudy Van Gelder. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on April 3, 1965. Remastered in 2001 by Rudy Van Gelder. All transfers from the analog tapes to digital were made at 24-bit resolution.

The Players:
Bobby Hutcherson: Vibes & Marimba
Freddie Hubbard: Trumpet
Sam Rivers: Tenor Sax, Soprano Sax, Bass Clarinet & Flute

5 out of 5 stars One of Blue Note's Finest.......2006-12-19

While Blue Note may have been known during the early-to-mid 60s for its string of soul-flavored boogaloo records, there was also during that same period an outpouring of forward thinking, experimental post-bop that challenged the boundaries of jazz convention without dispensing altogether with structure. Led by artists such as Andrew Hill, Bobby Hutcherson, Grachan Moncur III, Jackie McLean, Sam Rivers, Wayne Shorter and Joe Henderson, Blue Note's offerings from 1962-65 were without peer. And if I'm making a list of my favorite Blue Note recordings, regardless of era, then I'm placing Hutcherson's Dialogue in the top five.

Though is nominally a Hutcherson record, it is in many ways an Andrew Hill record; adventurous, yet accessible. Hill composed four of the albums' six songs, and the flavor of Hill's jagged and harmonically dense piano is predominant throughout the record. The opening song, "Catta," is a clear example of Hill's unique approach to composition, placing a repetitive line on top of an odd-metered mambo rhythm. Also evident throughout is Hill's penchant for probing the outer boundaries of meter and harmony, while keeping one foot firmly rooted in compositional structure. But that's not to belittle the contributions of Hutcherson, whose unique approach to the vibes, with it's airy, spacious feel, gives the recording that unmistakable Hutcherson sound.

Another important contributor is the vastly underrated drummer/composer, Joe Chambers. Along with having one of the best grooves this side of Billy Higgins, Chambers is an excellent composer. His contributions "Idle While," a beautiful, lilting waltz-time number, and "Dialogue," with its outward leaning, spooky haunted house feel, illustrate his unique compositional talents.

I would be remiss not to mention the contributions of this records' A-list supporting cast, which includes trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, Sam Rivers on tenor and soprano sax, as well as bass clarinet and flute, and the amazing Richard Davis on bass. Hubbard once again shows his ability to stretch beyond the conventions of his hard-bop roots, and Rivers shows his incredible versatility as a multi-reedist. I have to take exception with N. Dorward of Toronto's remark that Rivers is in "middling form" on "Catta." While I do concur that it is perhaps the strongest composition here, Rivers' tenor solo is wonderful; well constructed, purposeful and probing, without losing site of the song's melody. And as usual, you will not find a better, more versatile bass player than Richard Davis, a classically-trained player with an ear for melodic exploration.

Hutcherson made a number of appearances on the Blue Note label during the early-to-mid 60s, and I've yet to find one that I don't like. Other excellent examples of Hutcherson at his best include his other collaborations with Hill, Andrew!!! and Judgment, as well as Eric Dolphy's Out To Lunch, Jackie McLean's One Step Beyond and Destination Out, Grachan Moncur III's Evolution, Grant Green's Idle Moments, as well as Hutcherson's own Oblique, Stick-Up and Happenings. I highly recommend this recording for anyone that's a fan of avant-garde or post-bop jazz, as well as any fan of Andrew Hill. This is clearly a case of a pure five-star record, and not the typical gushing, hyperbole-filled amazon five-stars.

5 out of 5 stars the best jazz album I know of.......2005-07-20

Blue Note is often credited with a 'different approach' to 60's avant garde jazz. The difference, I would say, is due to a more studied, cerebral quality among the Blue Note issues.

Hutcherson himself credits the expansive mood prevalent in New York City at the time--a willingness to 'cross-pollinate' art forms typified by the outdoor 'happenings' that were part of the scene.

This record, "Dialogue", has the feel of synchronicity: six players on the same wavelength. The core of the record is formed by the two tracks, "Les Nois Marchant" and "Dialogue" which dovetail into each other seamlessly, with the feel of exploratory 20th Century chamber music. The ragtag processional, "Marchant" has a bit lighter mood than "Dialogue", which revolves around a repeated, stalking bass line.

The rest of the record, frankly, seems haunted by the ghost of Eric Dolphy. One wonders if he would have participated in the sessions, had he not met an untimely death. "Idle While" sounds very like "Ode to Charlie Parker" from Dolphy's "Far Cry", although Hutcherson's floating vibes provide a supranormal glow to the piece. Sam Rivers provides Dolphyesque bass clarinet to the slightly off kilter blues, "Ghetto Lights", as well as a great, laid back soprano sax solo.

Much of the music here anticipates directions that music would take in the next decade, predating the Art Ensemble of Chicago's forays into 'little instruments', and British progressive rockers like King Crimson openly acknowledge that they were listening to the Blue Note releases. They would certainly have heard this one, because King Crimson improvs were very similar in feel to this.

The musicians on "Dialogue" are uniformly great. Freddie Hubbard and Richard Davis contribute some of their finest playing on record. This is a mentally stimulating record that will get those endorphins going--with no sweat involved.

Don't pass it by.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular, mysterious and addictive..........2005-07-09

'Dialogue' is one of the most listenable of the mid-sixties avante-garde Blue Note dates. Comparisons are drawn here and elsewhere to Dolphy's 'Out to Lunch' and Hill's 'Point of Departure', but 'Dialogue' has more tonality and rhythm to balance the dissonance. This disc finds its way into my CD player five times as often as the other two mentioned.
*
If it appeals, you might seek out Hutcherson's 'Happenings', currently available on Amazon as a moderately priced Japanese import. Herbie Hancock features, and his playing is as interesting here as it is anywhere - the feel is more intense than on 'Dialogue', the startling cerise cover art a fair indication of what awaits. 'Vertigo' by Jackie McLean features similarly inspired piano work from Herbie, while McLean's 'One Step Beyond' has the leader in fabulous 'in and out' form, and Hutcherson bringing along a variety of intriguing moods - this album is available, with 24bit remastering, through Mosaic records in their Grachan Moncur 'Select' release; another McLean disc, 'Destination Out', available readily as an RVG remaster, has Hutcherson at his most intricate and surprising, the sparse arrangements giving room to hear all his nuances.
*
Another great date with Hutcherson and Hill is the latter's 'Judgment!'; and there's also Big John Patton's disc, 'Let 'Em Roll', which just might be his best, with Hutcherson, Grant Green, and Otis Finch on drums. Most of the discs with Hutcherson as leader are excellent, albeit less surprising than 'Dialogue' and 'Happenings'; 'Patterns' has some particularly beautiful moments; 'The Kicker' and 'Stick-Up' are solid, the latter showcasing Joe Henderson's talent; 'Oblique', with Herbie again, is due to be re-released on the 2nd of August, 2005; the magic is lost, however, on 'Medina', the release of these sessions having been deferred for good reason.
*
'Dialogue' wound rank in my top ten of all Blue Notes.

5 out of 5 stars Completes the Blue Note triumvirate of the avant-garde.......2005-03-26

Many people mention this album in the same breath as Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch and Andrew Hill's Point of Departure, and true, the similarities are striking. Both share much of the same personnel (Richard Davis being the man present on all occasions) and style, with elaborate, "structured-free" compositions, and very impressionistic soloing from all concerned.

That said, it's not the equal of Out to Lunch or Point of Departure...the themes are even more striking on those two, and the soloing is probably better. So get those 2 first to really learn what the kind of exploratory, blending tradition with radicalism style of the 60's really was. Once you have those, buy this.

This is really Andrew Hill's album in a way...most of the compositions (save 2 by drummer Chambers) are his, and while he has limited solo space you can see his touch over everything the others play. Hubbard is in very fine form here, proving he could be as avant-garde as anyone else (he often, unfairly, is considered solely to be a "groove" trumpeter.) Rivers only solos twice, but both solos (particularly his soprano) are two of the finest on record. Hutcherson plays great, especially on the title track. Joe Chambers is no Tony Williams, but he reminds you that he is one of the most underrated drummers in history. As for the bassist, Richard Davis, he is very much the un-sung hero of this album, as well as "Departure" and "Lunch." His bass lines combine both walking and strumming, and add to the colorful mix, while also providing an anchor to hold it together.

For the musically daring lovers of jazz, this needs to be in your collection...place it third behind Out to Lunch and Point of Departure and you've got it made.

5 out of 5 stars A classic!.......2004-10-28

This is mostly an Adrew Hill date, he provides most of the compositions and when comparing it with other dates by him, it is evident that he was the man behind this date. All players get equal space to solo, including Bobby Hutcherson. He is great all around, but my favourite moment is Freddie Hubbard solo on "catta', this might be my favourite all time solo of him. This one deserves to be called a Blue Note classic indeed.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

After unearthing Stephen Sondheim's youthful effort, Saturday Night, a couple of years ago, producers desperate to bank on the name of one of Broadway's last living titans continue chasing after obscure offerings. The Frogs was a 1974 adaptation of a play by Aristophanes and was staged by the Yale Repertory Theater for a week. This recording, the first complete one, boasts the presence of Nathan Lane, Davis Gaines, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. In Broadway star power, that's like having Jim Carrey, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise in the same movie. Evening Primrose was a 1966 ABC special, which spawned a couple of songs ("I Remember" and "Take Me to the World") that made it into the cabaret and solo recital repertories. Granted, these two pieces are for Sondheim completists, but they do provide an interesting glimpse into the mind of one of the musical theater's most brilliant auteurs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Primrose Shines, Frogs Leaps!.......2005-08-27

This recording is arguably one of Sondheims greatest! The Frogs, which appears here with a brilliant cast (Nathan Lane, Brian Stokes Mitchell among others) is one of Mr. Sondheims oddest pieces of theater. Although it was recently revived on Broadway with a new book by Mr. Lane and that recording is probably better, the entire first half of this recording (which is The Frogs) is brilliant for nostalgias sake and for the amazing expierence of the music itself. Mr. Sondheim has created such music for The Frogs! Very grandiose and stunning!

But it is really the final four tracks on the album (The Evening Primrose) that shines. The Evening Primrose is also an interesting Sondheim show but this one is quite possibly worth the price of the album itself. This recording (the only LEGAL one i know of) of the show is... well... perfect. The music is Sondheim at his best, the singers (Neil Patrick Harris plays the lead) are terrific and it just sounds glorious!

The Frogs might be an interesting and entertaining reason to purchase this album but it will The Evening Primrose that will make you scream with joy!

2 out of 5 stars Can I sell it On Ebay!!!!.......2005-06-01

Contrary to other reviwes posted I will tell you that the Evening Primrose on the Mandy Patinkin Cd "Dress Casual" IS the "Primrose" to own. This one was in my opinion under acted and undersung. While Mandy Patinkin is always over the tip, Ms Peters is one of the best Interpreters of Sondheim's works and the orchestration on this is much darker and deep, like the subject matter of the piece. I found this whole CD lacking, given that just like the "Dress Casual" I bought it only for the "Evening Primrose" selections. Thank the GODS for CD Burners so I can compile my own best of Sondheim CD.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Evening Primrose.......2004-04-15

I find the Evening Primrose here much better than that on "Dress Casual." Firstly, because the two performers--Neil Patrick Harris and Theresa McCarthy--are both amazing singers. Also, because both of these performers are younger and thus, their voices are more "youthful". For this musical, in particular, "youthfulness" is important; Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin are simply to mature to effectively do these parts. I find Neil Patrick Harris, in particular, absolutely superb, and his version of "Not While I'm Around" (on the NYP Sweeney Todd recording) is far and away the best I have ever heard (except for LuPone's dismal British accent). This Evening Primrose alone is worth the price of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing........2004-02-17

>The Patinkin-Peters version of "Evening Primrose" is in Patinkin's "Dress Casual" CD, the studio recording that became the basis of his Broadway concert. I believe this was the first time all four songs were recorded.

Possibly, but on THIS disc we have the first time all four songs were recorded UNDER SONDHEIM'S SUPERVISION, and that makes all the difference in the world. Mandy Patimkin greatly distorts "If You Can Find Me"'s melody; Bernadette Peters's voice is under the accompaniment on "I Remember", and the arrangements on "Dress Casual" are over-elaborate, gooey, and unrestrained. Neither singer effectively plays his character. No, the "Evening Primrose" you want is right here.

5 out of 5 stars Addendum.......2004-01-31

If you're looking for the Mandy Patinkin "Dress Casual" CD (as an alternative or supplemental "Evening Primrose" recording), note that Amazon has it listed, for some reason, under "classical music".

5 out of 5 stars Glorious pipes.......2007-04-20

New as an organ fan ? No mistake with this double Cd set. Registration is amazing and sounds like pure cristal. A simple joy.

B.A.C.H. from Liszt is great, and more great moments.

Organists play perfectly.
