Bursting at the seams with creative energy, the Clash's stunning 1979 double album more than made up for the artistic and commercial disappointment of its predecessor, 1978's tried-too-hard Give 'Em Enough Rope. With ex-Mott the Hoople producer Guy Stevens harnessing their sound as never before, the band yielded what proved to be the best work of their career. Bouncing from hard rock (the apocalyptic vision of the title track) to rockabilly ("Brand New Cadillac") to reggae ("Rudy Can't Fail") to pop (the Top 40 hit "Train in Vain"), the Clash knocked down all musical walls and, in the process, ended the argument over punk's viability in the U.S. --Billy Altman

5 out of 5 stars EVERY PERSON SHOULD HAVE THIS ALBUM.......2007-07-04

This is not gonna be a long review like others because it is simply put. Wonderful. In general, The Clash opens your mind and makes you wonder about things in this world of ours. I'm not just giving this a 5 because they are my favorate band. Another thing I would like to add, The Clash aren't just punk, they hit every single genre out there including reggae and jazz. If your a jazz fan, you will LOVE this album. EVERYONE WILL LOVE THIS ALBUM! LOOK HOW MANY 5 STARS THIS HAS!! ANYONE will love this album I guarentee It. Just to let you know I am 19 and being young, I bet even younger kids will like it. Or else they have no clue what music is.

5 out of 5 stars The Clash's greatest album, and one of rock's most enduring masterpieces...........2007-07-02

Some critic said that this was the album where The Clash stopped being punks and learned how to play their instruments. Luckily for us, The Clash instantly matured as a band here to make arguably one of the greatest rock albums of all time, and maybe the greatest double album of all time. Out of the 19 tracks here, not one is a throwaway. The album is one of the best sequenced, most coherent albums ever made. There is not one song on here that I skip over. There are some that I like more than others, but there isn't one song that sucks. Most punk bands did one of two things. They either died/faded away, or they stopped being punks and learned how to make real music (I never liked punk, obviously). Luckily, The Clash followed the 2nd path, and made their masterpiece. I'll pick my favorite 10 songs here, but it isn't easy. The title track, Spanish Bombs, The Right Profile, Clampdown, The Guns of Brixton, Wrong 'em Boyo, Death or Glory, The Card Cheat, Revolution Rock, and Train in Vain are my favorites here. The Clash, along with The Sex Pistols who became Public Image Ltd., grew into a great band after giving up the punk thing (which really is very limiting, if you think about it). Their follow ups, Sandinista! and Combat Rock, are very good, but this is the best of their 5 studio albums (I don't count Cut the Crap). It's a shame they broke up (and Joe Strummer died), but we still have this great album...

5 out of 5 stars Every Wannabe Rock & Roller Should Own This.......2007-06-05

London Calling is an unforgettable and classic CD that I personally think every wannabe rock and roller should have! Its jam packed with plenty songs, songs to get you riled up, songs to calmed down. This fantastic Album is filled with songs like, of course, "London Calling", "Lovers Rock", and "Spanish Bombs". All of these great tracks rolled into one terrific album. I have to say this is one of my faves, should be one of yours too.

5 out of 5 stars Sattamassaganna for Jimmy Dred!.......2007-05-08

Great album if you like the Clash. In fact if you like the Clash you should already have this. I had it on vinyl and decided to replace it with CD now that I've done away with my turntable.

Five stars for anyone who likes the Clash. Otherwise it could range between zero and five stars, but isn't that how music always is? Amazon recommended "Never Mind The Bollocks" by the Sex Pistols to be purchased with this CD, and both are great but I much prefer "London Calling" in my old age of 45. I still crank up my car stereo when I play either one on the highway and suggest you do so as well, preferably with the windows down and a good breeze. It's just one of those albums that feels better that way!

Not sure if I spelled "sattamassaganna" correctly in my title for this review, but this is the only album I know with that word on it.

Definitely worth far more than the $8.99 price. I ordered this at the same time I ordered Rockpile's "Seconds of Pleasure", a completely different style of album from about the same time-- both are worthy of places in the collection of anyone who likes music from around the 1979-80 time frame. That was a time of many styles of music, many of which are now classics, including "London Calling".

5 out of 5 stars The definitive 'must have' album.......2007-04-16

Hard to believe that this originally released in 1979 because I am still listening to it!! But then again this is what defines a classic -it's timelessness.

Plenty of reviews on this site cram as many facts about the band as they can muster in a few paragraphs to impress the other sicophants. It seems everyone is a frustrated rock critic. I'm not going to bore you with my rock knowledge of the Clash except to make this statement....This is one of the real 5 star albums out there..make no mistakes. The lyrics make a statement about the times and the music complements them perfectly.

A quick appraisal of the highlights....

London Calling needs no introduction as the killer track of the last few decades. It's powerful lyrics and chords thump it along until it reaches its haunting conclusion.."I never felt so much alike".....

Spanish Bombs...classic song with the spanish lyrics in the chorus...pure genius....

Lost in the supermarket....great storytelling type song about consumerism with Mick Jones pumping out the lyrics and supported by Strummer singing back up as only he can....

Death or Glory...when my 12 year old sang along to this in the car a few weeks ago I knew that this is the music that can transcend the generations. The line that starts "its been tested by research" still gives me a laugh

Train in Vain...Mick singing a melancholy ballad about being let down....

In short, everyone should have a copy of this album in their collections. The best part for any new fans is that there are so many great Clash songs on their other albums that you will not be disappointed and maybe like me you will be listening and still loving it 20 years later......

5 out of 5 stars Worth every cent.......2006-08-04

I personnaly did not buy this set, but rather the three discs separately. This is incredible music for such a low price! My jaw droped the first time I saw London Calling on sale for $8, it's a classic CD that everyone should own. This set shows the progression of the band as they go from punk foreruners to reggae explorers. The drastic changes in The Clash's style may not be for everyone, but the amount of classic tracks from "Police and Theives" to "London Calling" to "Should I stay or Should I go" make this great set worth it.

5 out of 5 stars If you're a Clash fan, it's indispensable.......2007-04-05

New so-called punk bands like Good Charlotte or AFI or even older bands like Blink 182 or the Offspring never felt like real punk to me. Maybe it was just that it was too many generations after the Dolls and the Ramones and the Pistols. The template is now set, and the fashion element is too important, and most importantly, absolutely nobody is shocked any more. Punk has become just another marketing label, and an acceptable one at that. The days of bands seeming like they were going to change the world ended sometime around 1979.

That was the year that the Clash released LONDON CALLING, which remains, to these subjective ears, the single greatest rock album ever recorded: Two slabs of vinyl featuring 19 songs pulling influences from rockabilly, reggae, blues, funk, jazz and pop with not one single clunker in the bunch. It was politically relevant, socially charged and so vital that I got a shock every time I put it on the turntable.

In the years since its release, its urgency has barely lessened. Regardless of the frat boys who only know the line "I live by the river!" from the title track or radio listeners who misstate the chorus of "Train in Vain" as "You CAN stand by me" instead of "you DIDN'T stand by me," LONDON CALLING still feels new and exciting and rebellious and powerful.

And so, Sony Legacy has released LONDON CALLING: THE 25th ANNIVERSARY LEGACY EDITION, combining the original album (as remastered for the 1999 re-release) with a bonus DVD and a CD of the so-called "Vanilla Tapes," previously unheard rehearsal sessions featuring five songs that didn't make the record.

For the Clash fanatic (uh, me), The Vanilla Tapes are an archaeological find akin to unearthing Da Vinci's sketchbooks or Sylvia Plath's practice suicide notes. To hear the genesis of an album that I know inside out is a privilege. But I can't imagine that even the biggest Clash fan is going to pull The Vanilla Tapes out on a regular basis. Of the 21 songs, only about a half a dozen hold up as more than historical artifacts (even aside from the poor sound quality). After listening to The Vanilla Tapes about six times, I already have a number of tracks that get the skip button... A long, repetitive instrumental demo of "Hateful" only serves to hammer home the monotony of rock and roll song structure. Anyone who's only a casual fan of the band probably isn't even going to make it through the whole disc once. Even the "new" songs aren't fully fleshed out enough to be really considered full songs (although many will be intrigued by the band's cover of Bob Dylan's "The Man in Me"). "Heart and Mind" seems like it may have been nixed by the band because it sounds too much like an outtake from the band's second LP, GIVE `EM ENOUGH ROPE (the closest they ever came to a misstep).

The DVD features a new half hour documentary by Don Letts, THE LAST TESTAMENT: THE MAKING OF LONDON CALLING which is partly a cheat in that it recycles interviews with the band from Letts' WESTWAY TO THE WORLD film from 2001. The new material features the band's old pal Kosmo Vinyl (humorously dubbed their "consiglieri") and engineer Bill Price. What makes this NOT a rip off is the absolutely mesmerizing footage of the band in the studio, recording the album with producer Guy Stevens.

In many studio situations, the producer serves as the leveling force among sometimes volatile band relationships. Not so on the LONDON CALLING sessions. Stevens was a madman; he would throw chairs and ladders around the studio, jump up and down, scream and yell ALL WHILE THE BAND WAS RECORDING! Watching this bearded, crazed Brit trying to destroy plastic chairs while Paul Simonon plays his bass in his natty new shirt and hat is a bizarre juxtaposition that only enhances the mosaic nature of the record. It makes sense.

The DVD also features videos for three songs from LONDON CALLING, and more of that amazing studio footage. The set as a whole features two booklets, one brand new with previously unpublished photos by Pennie Smith, two essays and reprints from the Armagideon Times zine the band made for the tour, the other a reprint of the lyric sheet from the record.

The Clash were one of those rare rock and roll alchemies that transmuted riffs and anger into poetry and power. LONDON CALLING is the document of the band at its peak, before the inevitable power struggles and changing interests would pull Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Topper Headon apart. They still had two great albums in them (yes, both SANDINISTA! and COMBAT ROCK are GREAT), but it seems almost fitting that punk peaked before the awful decade that was the 80s came to be. For we aging punk fans who saw the band when they were together, who bought their albums when they were new, who knew that "the only band that matters" wasn't a hollow claim... I can't imagine LONDON CALLING will ever sound old... even if we do.

2 out of 5 stars how can two extra choppy discs make london calling better?.......2006-07-13

first, the rating is for the un-necessary 3 disc set. yes, london calling is a great album, but this 25.00 a pop remaster thing that is going on these days is a scam and starting to get out of hand(weezer, sonic youth, and more)...i mean if you REALLY adore the band or album it is surely worth it, but if your a casual fan, just stick with the single disc..you arent missing much..actually, the choppy demos and what not make the album seem less inspiring and magical...i mean ill admit, if they REALLY improve the quality of music and add something phenomenal, i can see an easy "add to cart."...perfect example...the damned's double disc version of "black album."...get that over this...and keep your single disc london calling! it is already good enough...it doesn't need any choppy decorum additions like this.

5 out of 5 stars "It was the last rock and roll album".......2006-05-06

If you're thinking of buying this edition of "London Calling," chances are the original album needs no introduction. But if you are unfamiliar with it, suffice to say it's one of the very best hard rock albums of any era, especially its own. For a band usually classified as a punk band, the Clash proved to be far more versatile than that genre would suggest. Elements of everything from rockabilly to reggae put in an appearance here, all with an unmistakably punk attitude. Listening to the original album gives you the feeling that the style would have lasted much longer than it did if all those bands had learned how to play their instruments this well.

But odds are you knew that! What of the extras? The Vanilla Tapes were new to me, although they're apparently already well known among more serious Clash fans. In any case, they're probably only of interest to serious fans. The sound quality is generally poor, and most of the tracks are essentially practice runs for what ended up on the album. That said, there are a couple of previously unreleased songs here that are a nice addition. "Lonesome Me" is the best of these, an unlikely country-rocker that doesn't quite fit the sound of the final album but sounds great among the practice tapes. Also of note is "Where You Gonna Go (Soweto)," which fits the London Calling sound so perfectly you'll be sure you'd heard it before. So if the original album is among your favorites, the extra CD is worth a listen.

As for the DVD, I'm surprised it's not more popular among the other reviewers. My only problem with it is that a lot of the vintage footage (much of it newly discovered according to the liner notes) is all too short and gives you just a taste of seeing the boys live in 1979. Still, it's great to see even snippets of the actual recording of the album and vintage concert footage. There are also some great memories from the surviving members and their friends, notably the story behind that picture of Paul Simonon destroying his bass, and Joe Strummer's hilarious reaction to the news that Rolling Stone had named London Calling the best album of the '80s. (Hint: if you're old enough to remember when the album really came out, your reaction was probably the same!)

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums ever!.......2005-09-16

The Clash's London Calling is with out a doubt one of the all time best albums ever made, It's more then a punk, rock, regea, or ska album it's a melting pot for all that is good in those genras of music. Mick Jones' guitar work was never better then here on London Calling and Joe Strummers voice was never before or after a strong and a good as it is here. The whole band really came together in late 1979 to record what would go down in history as the greatest punk album of all time and one of the all time best all around albums ever, easily in the top ten of all time.

The album opens up with the legendary title track, 'London Calling.' With it's legendary bass line and guitar riff it was sure to be a classic, long held as one of the all time best songs, and Strummers lyrics are nothing to be rivaled. 'Brand new Cadilac' is a 1950's cover song that features great guitar and is pulled off perfectly in ture rockabilly form. 'Jimmy Jazz' is a basic Jazz song with nice laid back feel to it. 'hateful' is one of the better songs on the album, with a killer chorus and awesome backing vocals from the band. 'Rudie cant Fail' is straight up punk rock all the way. It starts off slow and builds to a all out assualt. I like 'Spanish Bombs' because the chorus is in spanish which sounds really cool when sung by guys with british accents. 'The Right Profile' is a cool song but nothing too special. 'Lost In The Supermarket' is like nothing The Clash ever recorded and it is one of their all time best songs, easily one of my favorites, it sounds almost ahead of it's time, like something from the mid-1980's. 'Clampdown' is legendary Clash, a true classic in the bands archive. This song is considered one of the top three punk songs of all time and is easily The Clash's most famous. 'The Guns Of Brixton' and 'Wrong Em Boyo' are two very cool songs but they both sound pretty similar. 'Death Or Glory' is another punk classic that was recently covered by Social Distortion, but the original is by far better, as most are. 'Koka Kola' is my least favorite song on the album but it is still a good song. 'The Card Cheat' is a ballad, yes I said a ballad, and boy do the boys do it good, it's one of their better songs if you ask me. 'Lovers Rock' is just straight up rock and roll and it features one of Mick Jones' all time best guitar riffs of all time, no I take that back this is his best. 'Fourhorsemen' apart from having a really cool title is a really cool song. 'I'm Not Down' and 'Revolution Rock' and two songs that fit very well with each other and need to be heard to fully appreciate. The album comes to a close with it's best song, and my personal favorite Clash song, 'Train in Vein' is truly one of the all time best songs, it is just so perfect. Everything I could ever want is in this song and more, it is just so good you must hear it to understand what I mean, but now that I think about it you probabley have heard this song because it is one of The Clash's biggest songs ever.

If you are looking for a way to get into punk this is it. If you are looking for a way to get into The Clash this is the way to go, and if you just want to buy one of the all time greatest album of all time you cant go wrong with London Calling. How many albums do you know that have 18 songs on them and dont get boring? Very few right? Well here is another long album that never gets boring only better as it plays. Highly, highly recomended!

5 out of 5 stars On par with the best of the classics.......2005-08-16

There is perhaps no more appropriate totem for the world of punk rock than the cover of "London Calling", a perfect aping of Elvis Presley's first album - including the same pink and green font scheme - only featuring Paul Simenon smashing his bass on stage as opposed to Elvis strumming his guitar and singing placidly (at least by comparison). There is also no greater example of a band whose sophomore album was universally panned by comparison with it's era-defining debut, only to come back and put something out which would silence the critics (including finicky fans) forever - or at least until the solo careers kicked in.

"London Calling" manages the rare feat of being everything to everyone; there are an almost maniacal variety of musical genres been played off of here, and not a single one is brought off in anything less than triumphant fashion. Whereas the Clash had toyed with reggae in a more reverent fashion on their first album, with "Rudie Can't Fail" they fully realize how punk and reggae can blend rather than simply co-exist. "London Calling" is stark and anthemic, with it's prophecy that civilization as we know it is experiencing a revolution, a sentiment no more cleverly illustrated than in the line "phone Beatlemania/has bitten the dust". "Hateful" is another catchy hybrid-pop tune with sociological lyrics, a hallmark of this album if there is one.

The band reach a new peak with "Spanish Bombs", a song that is propellant in rhythm while still being built on minor chords, a paeon to the Spanish Civil War which reaches it's richest symbolism in the line "my Senorita's rose was nipped in the bud". Horns make their way into "The Right Profile" as they both mock and salute the tragic life of Montgomery Clift, and the 80s focus on consumerism is given precognitive analysis in "Lost in the Supermarket". My favorite song on the album is probably "The Card Cheat". Over swelling piano and horns, Joe Strummer illustrates the plight of the man who seeks heroism in inauspicious times. Moving from a man looking to succeed his adversaries in the Wild West maelstrom of saloon gambling to less metaphorical examples such as those who have fought unjust wars for incompetent kings, Strummer urges "before you met your fate, but sure you did not foresake/your lover...". "Clampdown" is another pop song typical of the album's style, a vaguely Caribbean influenced number with politically charged lyrics, this one dealing with the purposelessness of willful admission into the rat race in no uncertain Marxist terms.

And of course everyone knows "Train in Vain", although it was a late addition to the album and wasn't even listed on the record sleeve, hence providing an early example of the "bonus track" (in fact, even the original CD issue failed to list it, although the reissue campaign of the early 2000s finally fixed this issue --- personally I thought it was a lot more fun when you just had to know it was there).

Altogether, not only are there no weak tracks on this album, but with "London Calling" the Clash fused punk and more popular strains of rock 'n' roll in a unique way that no one has ever been able to replicate, including the band themselves (follup LP "Sandinista" would be heavily criticized for exactly that: attempting to match the eclecticism of it's predecessor while both overreaching and underachieving at the same time). When I hear people argue over who's the greatest rock band of all time, it invariably comes down to a choice between the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zeppelin, or some other band of that classic rock ilk. With "London Calling" the cornerstone of their legacy, I don't see any reason why the Clash can't be considered just as relevant and timeless as any of those bands, and this album proves you don't have to like raw, dirty, two chord punk rock snottiness to appreciate what the Clash have to offer.

In 2004 "London Calling" was reissued in a stellar Legacy Edition featuring a bonus disc of lost demos and versions as well as a third disc of DVD footage.

Eric Coates' "Calling All Workers" and Edward White's "Puffin' Billy" (used as Captain Kangaroo's theme music!) are the two main reasons to buy this first-rate CD. The former work, from 1940, is an elegantly rousing and structurally flawless march in symmetrical binary form, with the second section making its final appearance in augmentation, the note values doubled for wonderful dramatic effect. Such by-the-book perfection is news when encountered in Mozart or Beethoven, and it should be given its due here. The equally effective "Puffin' Billy" is breezily structured by comparison, with a minimum of thematic material transformed through theme and variation and frequent modulations into a charming and satisfyingly complete train journey. The piece is repetitious as can be, but it doesn't sound that way, and therein lies the miracle of its composition. These two works steal the CD, hands-down.

But there are several close seconds, including the marvelous, Satie-worthy "The Boulevardier," and "The Haunted Ballroom," a piece that evokes the title in a way that is almost spooky. And there's a corny but lovely piece by Albert ("In a Persian Market") Ketelbey called "Bells Across the Meadows." Ketelbey cunningly and cleverly suggests the bells of the title through the subtlest of means--namely, bells sounding in the distance. Across the meadows, almost. But the music works, and that's all that matters.

5 out of 5 stars Fills a need for many music collections ..........2000-11-09

Intelligent, entertaining light orchestra music is something I find fills a great space in my collection. It's perfect for those days you just don't feel up to Mahler or Wagner, but still want some music in your life. This excellent first volume in one of Hyperion's most popular series is a great way to get started.

All of the tunes on this generously-filled CD are written by British masters of light music and played with fizzing energy and a sense of fun by Ronald Corp and his fine orchestra. No piece outstays its welcome and some may be familiar to you -- especially "Puffin' Billy," which was used as the theme for the old Captain Kangaroo children's show! Many are probably very familiar to British listeners, having been used as openers for popular BBC radio and TV shows over the years.

Tuneful and entertaining, this CD is a great find and could become one of your favorites. Give it a chance -- like me, you may find yourself hunting after others in the series: British Light Music Classics 2 and 3, American Light Music Classics, and European Light Music Classics.

This CD brings a smile to my face. Vanity Fair and the Boulevardier will make you light on your feet. Dusk is another beauty. The CD is full of wonderful, clever music. I'm looking forward to getting CDs 2 and 3. The music may have been around for a while but it is a fresh as ever.

5 out of 5 stars Familiar and unfamiliar, early and late Coates' works........2001-12-28

A second CD of the music of Eric Coates, featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by John Wilson, takes its name from the principal item - a 20 minute piece for large orchestra called "The Enchanted Garden". In its final form (1937), it was intended for a ballet with a scenario devised by Coates' wife Phyllis. To me it sounds like a symphonic poem, with a particularly engaging "boop-boop-a-doo" opening theme.

Elsewhere you will find the familiar and unfamiliar. You will also find a very early work, "A La Gavotte" (1912) and his last work, a march "High Flight" (1956). Comparisons with Coates' own recordings show that John Wilson keeps close to Coates' rather fleet speeds. My favourite here is "Dance in the Twilight" from the 1937 "Springtime Suite", as evocative and beautifully scored a piece of light music as any that might find its way into your cart.

5 out of 5 stars Eric Coates Rules!.......2001-11-20

Yet another winner in the ASV series of Eric Coates CDs. The highly professional BBC Concert Orchestra have once again created a most worthy presentation of works by Eric Coates. As with the companion CD, "Eric Coates~17 Orchestral Miniatures," the diversity of works will satisy and delight all E.C. fans.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-25

I have always admired the nonchalant and somewhat dry humor of Noel Coward lyrics, not to mention the interesting twists and turns that his music often takes, I admire Ian Bostridge for attempting his songs and doing a "bang-up" job of it! A quote from Ian Bostridge prior to making this recording:"My first concern while contemplating a disc of Noel Corward songs was finding a voice for them,,,,,,We need to remember that, in Coward, we have not only a formidable playwright and screenwriter, but also the English equivalent of Irving Berlin or Cole Porter". After I heard this from Bostridge (on an interview on ABC) I began to appreciate the songs much more than previously. There is much philosophising going on as in "I Travel Alone" and some are quite humorous as in "Mad Dogs and Englishmen". One has to listen more than once to get it all, but it's worth the time. And I definately think that Ian found the voice to sing them.Do I prefer Bostridge singing classical??Of course!!!!!But I still enjoy a break now and then and I'll take this disc for that reason.

4 out of 5 stars Mad dogs and an Englishman called Ian .......2005-09-02

I must say that I approached this album as a fan of Ian rather than Noel Coward (and admittedly still don't really have a good idea of who the man is). So in terms of Ian's singing, I like it a lot. He has a wonderfully dextrous voice and a clear tone, complemented by Jeffrey Tate on the piano and the soprano Sophie Daneman for several numbers.

Generally I find myself unable to appreciate the work of classical singers who do crossover albums, but Ian is an exception. It has been said elsewhere that he may lack a robustness in his voice, but here in fact, one would not wish for an overpowering tenor. He isn't at all overblown, unlike many other singers in crossovers. The lightness of his voice lends a kind of intimacy to these recordings, as if he were singing in a café or an at-home musical evening.

The material is, of course, a departure from Schubert, &c., but he handles it well. However, I do think that he has a better emotional feel for the 19th century German romanticists and the 20th century British classical composers (i.e. Britten). This recording is pleasant but it seems to me to lack the emotional depth of Ian's Schumann in particular - a perceived deficiency that might lie with the composer Coward rather than the performer.

I like to listen to this CD when I want to listen to Ian sing, but am not in the mood for his more serious/depressing recordings (a la Schubert & Britten). The lyrics are pretty inane, the same goes for the songs themselves - melodically speaking - but Ian makes them special. So four stars.

5 out of 5 stars Coward the Composer, Quite Charming without the Camp.......2002-11-18

I love this CD. I have a collection of Noel Coward performing his major songs, and I found it entertaining, but frankly I was never much drawn to it after the initial novelty wore off. I never really appreciated Coward as a composer because his campy persona and limited vocal talents got in the way. I bought this CD as a gift for a big Coward fan, and I am ashamed that I have not yet given it to him because I enjoy it so much. Bostridge is a really fine tenor. The beauty and subtlety of his voice bring out the beauty of Coward's melodies and the wit of his lyrics without overwhelming them with a heavy and mannered "classical" style, which is the bane of most such "crossover" CDs. The CD is also beautifully recorded. Outstanding songs include "I Travel Alone," "Parisian Pierrot," "World Weary," and "A Room with a View." Bostridge also has just the right touch with the goofier songs like "Mad Dogs and Englishmen," "Something to do with Spring," and "Any Little Fish." I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys witty cabaret songs in general and Coward in particular. It really did give me a new and greater appreciation of Coward's considerable talents as a composer.

      2 out of 5 stars COWARD'S THEATRE SONGS.......2002-09-30

Sometimes musical artists should NOT attempt cross-over albums. I am a huge fan of Jessye Norman, Leontyne Price and Joan Sutherland, but their ventures into "popular" music were, at best, misguided and, at worst, heavy-handed and pretentious. Although Ian Bostridge does not embarrass himself, there is no question that he should stick to more "serious" music and leave musical comedy to other singers.

The theatre songs of Noel Coward take a very different kind of approach than Bostridge gives them. They need an actor who happens to be singing. Except for a very few of the songs on this CD (written by Coward for operettas instead of musical comedies) Bostridge's approach is absolutely without any character. All of these numbers are impeccably sung by Bostridge, but none of them are ever really acted. Coward's songs MUST be acted whether they were written in a comic or sentimental vein. The result is another misfired cross-over album in what otherwise is a splendid career.

5 out of 5 stars don't leave home without it!.......2005-06-20

i have the clash on broadway, which is awesome, but it has a few "edited versions", why? i dunno, somebody needs a smack. anyway if you are like me and trying to get your albums/tapes on cds while also buying all the great new stuff that's out there, it can get pretty *^%&()* expensive and let me tell you, this is CHEAP! it also comes with 3 little booklets, london calling and combat rock have all the lyrics in case you don't already know them, and if you don't wtf are you doing even looking @ this, go buy blink 182 or something. that's right. :P
