(3.5) - Mixed Bag.......2007-02-05
I have to admit a degree of disappointment with Hermano's first full-length "Dare I Say". After the excellent "Only A Suggestion" EP, I was expecting a full-length release would give the band more freedom and license. Unfortunately there's about the same number of good songs on "Dare I Say", a bunch of mediocre ones and some rather pointless fillers. So really, this should have been an EP too.
First for the good stuff, John Garcia is an amazing vocalist as any fan of Kyuss, Slo Burn, Unida and Hermano's debut EP would testify. Put his voice over an excellent song and you have a winning and rocking combination. And at times "Dare I Say" really hits the spot. The opening of the album is stunning, but not the very opening of "Cowboys Suck" which is rather boring and overly simplistic angst, I'm talking about the 2-3-4 punch which is the peak of the album. This starts with "Life" a bouncy tune that slowly builds momentum and showcases an excellent chorus accentuated by a lovely lead riff. "Roll Over" is for me the best song on the album, and Hermano's best for that matter. This song hits the spot perfectly, it really makes me question what the f*%k the band was thinking with some of their other material, as simply this song is inspired. Evolving around a dazzling lead riff which harkens back to retro garage rock thanks to its catchy and simplistic quality (simplistic in a good way this time, NOT boring), the song patiently builds groove complementing Garcia's delivery, which opens with a muffled vocal effect, but verse by verse evolves in volume and effect until he is battering out the lyrics as boldly and gallantly as his best work with Kyuss. Then the last of this trio of excellent songs is the unsettling "Brother Bjork", which is again a menacing slow-burner, and again he band hit the mark with the perfect combination of solid song writing and Garcia's domineering vocals. Other album highlights include the bluesy "Murder One" which has a very desert, somewhat dirty and Wild Western bar vibe to it. "My Boy" is another strong point, although pretty much carried by Garcia's massive chorus delivery, belting out the lines with energy and power.
So I would say there's five excellent songs here, compared to "Only A Suggestion" which had four. The problem then is the rest of "Dare I Say", the other six songs that do nothing for me. Too often the band pummel out simple and loud riffs, with uninspiring musicianship and writing, and rely on Garcia to rescue the song from being rather crappy. This is the case with the opener, which never changes from its repetitively dull riffing, then there's "Is This Ok?" - this song is EXACTLY what my point is with these weaker tracks...the mediocre lead riff repeated unnecessary amounts, combined with uninspired chorus' and a real lack of song writing, all resulting in a distinctly average stoner dirge. "Quite F*%ked" and "Angry American" are just run-of-the-mill fast paced onslaughts with the band blasting out the same tired sounding theme, and Garcia delivering angry and abusive lyrics. It really isn't up to the same quality as "Life", "Roll Over" and the likes, which showcase the bands writing ability and also use Garcia to good effect, instead of just getting him to shout and bellow his way around.
If the band cut out the mediocre material from this LP, and created another long EP, I would listen to it more often, as I just don't like skipping tracks.
Subpar 2nd Effort.......2006-06-09
Being a huge Garcia fan, I was pretty pleased with Hermano's 1st album. For me, this album was a huge dropoff from that effort. For lack of a better term, this album was BORING. The songwriting is the big disappointment, and proves that a talented singer can only do so much with lackluster material. Kyuss and Unida will have to suffice for now.
Kyuss Reborn.......2006-02-04
I first saw Kyuss on the Headbangers Ball and have loved them since Blues for the Red Sun. They're one of my all time favorite bands. This is the closest thing to Kyuss I've ever heard - and Kyuss never sounded the same twice.
Kyuss no longer exists, so I've looked for its offspring. None satisfy like Hermano. John Garcia is here in all his glory, but just like Kyuss, he's the keystone to the rest of the band.
The only weak tracks are #6, #9, and maybe #11.
I can't wait for more from these guys.
Queens of the Stone Age who?.......2005-09-30
Sorry, but I don't get how Queens can get so much hype when half the songs on their discs are average at best.
Needless to say, I would hate to be Josh Homme knowing that he had John and Kyuss.
This latest effort by Hermano completely buries anything Josh Homme and Queens could ever hope to do. It is stellar from start to finish. Every track is true to the roots rock.
Garcia and company obviously understand that tinkering around with something good would be suicidal. Homme and company need to take some lessons............
Sorry to say, but this album is a dissapointment.......2005-09-01
Well, I finally got my copy of "Dare I Say" in the mail yesterday and sadly, I am dissapointed with it. I've come to love pretty much everything that John Garcia has been a part of, including every Kyuss album (except for Wretch), Unida, and Hermano's first album. Although the first album is short, it is far superior to this sophomore effort. There just really aren't any songs that stand out. "My Boy" and "Life" are the only ones that I really can see myself listening to in the future, and neither of them hold a candle to Kyuss' best. Trust me, I really hate to write this and bag on one of my favorite musicians, but this album really doesn't do it for me. I'd say if you want to check out true material from Garcia, then definitely go out and grab some Kyuss as mentioned above, or Hermano's first album, "Only a Suggestion."

Excellence, no surprise........2006-05-11
Five stars here folks. But what would you expect from ol 'Wino'. The guy puts his heart and soul into the music. Scott ignores all trends, and just plays the stuff the way he wants to hear it. It's good to see all these out of print albums coming out of the wood works. If you're into any of his stuff, don't hesitate to add this one to your collection.
you took the words right outta my mouth... I can die happy too.......2006-05-10
my thoughts exactly. I have been waiting for years to have this album re-issued. I have been bugging Jadd at Meteor City records for the past 2 years once I heard that there were rumors flying around about Lunar Womb being put out again. this was actually supposed to come out a year and a half ago. more than once, I came really close to spending a butt-load of money on over-priced used copies of the original version of Lunar Womb (on Hellhound records) on EBay. but I held out, and tried to stay patient. finally, my waiting has paid off. in the entire "stoner-rock" genre (God, I hate that term), this is probably one of the most important albums. a true classic from one of the greatest singer/guitarists since Hendrix, the almighty Wino. also, probably the best Obsessed album. now, the only thing left is for a label to re-issue The Church Within. I already have my copy, but there are tons of other Obsessed fans out there that need it.

This soundtrack is one I must honestly say I slept on! It wasn't until after Gerald Levert's passing that Frank McComb posted "Somebody Cares for You" on his MySpace page! I absolutely fell for that track and had to have the soundtrack. How I loved Shanice's "It's For You" -- there are definitely hidden gems on this project that are worthy of revisitation!!

The Rocker.......2006-08-31
This 2 disk set is an absolute jam from start to finish. Monster riffs, driving bass and drums, passionate vocals, this is not your average doom and gloom. Tempos cover a broad range from slow sludge to very fast uptempo rock. Wino is without a doubt the most unheralded rock guitar hero/god...ever! I seriously doubt Hendrix could have filled 2 cds with the inspired, unrelenting leads Wino has created with Spirit Caravan. My only hope is that future generations discover him the way Clapton and Page found the blues master of yester-year. If you like loud, uncomprimising hard rock that gots soul, you must buy this.
some truly great work from Wino's 2nd greatest band.......2006-04-21
this release is a compilation that collects songs from the Spirit Caravan's 2 full length albums, their first and last 7" singles, and a couple unreleased tracks. the digital remastering sounds great - lots of clarity and a slight boost in the levels. this 2-CD set in my opinion is proof that Wino is truly one of the greatest post-Hendrix rock guitarists alive today. Spirit Caravan may not ever achieve the cult status of Saint Vitus or Obsessed, but Wino's level of heart and soul in his playing with S.C. is certainly matched with anything else he's ever done in his career, past or future.
A Near Flawless Chronicle of Greatness.......2004-02-19
Wino and all of his musical endeavors, in a short period of time and space, have planted their seeds in my brain and gains more shelf space in my psyche every day. It is safe to assume that my interest level in Spirit Caravan has blossomed into nearly a full blown obsession. Spirit Caravan rises to the top of the "stoner rock" mountain with a mighty grasp on how rock music; in general, is supposed to be played. It is catostrophic to me that Spirit Caravan never achieved the amount of success that lesser bands have been handed for much less effort.
Sans the "Dreamwheel" ep, I do believe that the whole catalog is present and accounted for. Disc 1 features a handful of scattered ep and compilation tracks before careening headfirst into the amazing "Jug Fulla Sun" LP. Disc 2 contains some unreleased tracks followed by the equally praise-worthy "Elusive Truth" LP and most of these songs have gone largely ignored outside of the Caravan's core fanbase.
Heavy, yet well crafted riffs round out the whole of the songs contained therein. The aspect of Spirit Caravan that makes them so unique is their total professional approach to writing music. A good amount of stoner rock bands go for the jugular with unabashed heaviness and Spirit Caravan takes their style ten steps further by incorporating melody, tone, random tempo changes and an all encompassing feeling of despair without falling into the trap that many of rock's elite dive head first into.
If you missed the boat the first time, here's your chance to board the cruise ship. Meteor City gets all the goat horns in their favor for making this collection of superb heavy music available to those who either cannot find Spirit Caravan's individual releases or want to have the lion's share of SC music in one convenient package. Your metal/rock/punk/stoner library is naked without Spirit Caravan to give it some refinement.
"Let Your 3rd Eye Glow...........2004-02-17
....and be your guide up"
Truly amazing offering of damn near everything they did...great place to start if you're just "tuning in".
How I wish they would've included a live version of Black Sabbath's "Wicked World" that they covered along w/Eric Burdon's "Inside Looking Out"(available on The Obsessed "Incarnate") As someone else mentioned, none of the material from the "Dreamwheel" 10" is here, but it's still in print on vinyl/cd.
I saw these guys a few times & they play w/absolute conviction.
Live or recorded, you're in for a cosmic riff blast of the REAL THING. If you're a long time fan, then you no doubt have your fave picks from any of the bands Wino's been in, but the SC material is just brimming w/spiritual heavy goodness which shines, shudders and brings forth message of spirit in spiritually bankrupt times.
For many people, Wino embodies those elusive elements & reasons behind why or just what it was that turned you onto that Sabbathy sound/feel all those yrs ago, ya know ~ it resonates like a tolling bell in the music & lyrics, and ya either get it or ya don't. For those who do, this stuff is of the highest strain indeed...
It's good to hear alternate recordings of some of these tunes...the early version of "Courage" is stunning.
Plus you get the last 5 tunes they recorded, which they were playing on their last tour..."Dove-Tongued Aggressor" "The Last Embrace" & the frighteningly prophetic "Brainwashed"..("one more fool, divide & rule, a brainwashed populace")..plus the 2 tunes that are on the white vinyl 7" "So Mortal Be" & "Undone Mind".
This is HEAVY guitar rock, heavy 3 piece doom rock at it's best.
You can bet that Wino was born w/an old, wise soul; his music IS that pure & rarist of things, HONESTY...honesty just is & doesn't have to try to BE that thing, understand? It just is.
Wino is the living incarnation of that industrial Black Sabbath grade of lurching, heavy-as-hell riff rock..something that many people never really "got" or new about or had all but forgotten.
What you have here is the pure DNA strain that takes you to a higher place as Wino & Co. blow you back-flat against the wall of the bar!
As someone who grew up in the 80's playing Vitus albums, it's difficult to convey the sense of integrity inherent in this music to someone who may not be equipped to discern the difference, but for those who care, it's like trying to explain the creative difference's and intent between a John Cassavetes movie & a typical Hollywood movie..you're either drawn to it or remain foolishly indifferent.
Remember that John C. line about people in this culture being dead or emotionally dead by the time they're 21, & that he saw it as his job as an artist to help people go beyond that point? Many artists & people could & should be thanked for their contributions to humanity...LIFE..Wino is one of those.
Now go check out Hidden Hand!
Mike Byers.......2004-02-10

Shame Unida broke up. If you like this you will love slo-burn. My only complaint is the case was cracked.
Sick of.. um..yeah! so put out your misery!.......2001-10-12
Dozer's "Overheated" lacked any musical talent, but Unida's Red fit the bill nicely, it being my currently favorite song. I downloaded the complete "Coping with the Urban Coyote" CD by Unida and found it mostly soundworthy, though with a less than 4-star sould quality. I recommend getting "Size Queen" by Kyuss, and "Red" by Unida before you buy anything.
In loving memory of Kyuss.......1999-08-29
I finally found this Kyuss spin-off and am extremly pleased!! Once the first track started and the vocals kicked in, I was smilin'. Just like the good ole days of the original Kyuss. I just ordered the "new" Unida cd and am on edge to hear it. I don't know who Dozer is, but they kick a** as well. Very good cd....it earns its 5 stars easy. BUY IT NOW!!!!
Unida rocks!.......1999-05-13
Unida sounds awesome! John Garcia picks up right where he left off with Slo Burn. The vocals are powerful and the music has an amazing heavy groove to it. A must have for any Kyuss or stoner rock fan! I will admit that I was disappointed with Dozer. They really show no originality, but this album is worth it soley for Unida. Gotta love Delta Alba Plex (smokin')
A must for Kyuss-fans........1999-05-12
Unida almost reaches the same heights as Kyuss did. Dozer is a real outsider and I was surprised how good they are. Dozer's tracks are not as well produced as Unida's, but who cares when they make great music.

Riffs on parade.......2006-12-01
Maybe most of Bitchwax fans are Ed's dieharders, but I must say Finn has indeed more sense of song writting and constructing melodies over riffs. Ed is more like a "jam free MC5 reckless life guitar player" and a little bit of discipline does good to anyone's ears.
This album is very thrilling, starts with the blockbuster "the destroyer" and so it goes, a modern approach of good old 70's hard rock style.
Besides all that boring split talk stuff, "the passenger" is my favorite track; after all, who can resist some handclaps and a slight voice box effect over the song?
Do not expect a timeless masterpiece; instead, a nice rock record just for fun listening in your car, driving down somewhere in this planet.
4.5 stars.
Fill the space with fuzz........2006-09-13
Ok so Ed Mundell (Monster Magnet fame) left the band and is replaced with Finn. That makes for a slighty different band, slightly different sound, but rocks all the same. I actually like it because the change has given the band some new life. There's tighter songs and more singing, but the playing is still tops. I hesitate to say it's better than past albums, but it's still atomic. The bottom line is that it's a must. What other band name and artwork is gonna make your friends think your this cool?
A New Band..........2005-11-08
When I heard the news that Ed Mundell had been replaced by Finn Ryan I was worried that Bitchwax was all but finished. When I heard the demos for "Dark Chi" and "Going Guido", I was convinced even further. But when I bought the album and gave it an honest listen, I was relieved that the band still has some signs of life. Ed was the most talented force behind The Atomic Bitchwax, but even in his absense the band's sound is still great, even if it fails to live up to the classic Bitchwax standards. Gone are the heavy riff-driven jams, but with Finn we have a whole new band that is making some increadible rock music, even if it lacks the edge that Ed brought.
Although I do like the album, I must say I was very dissapointed. One obvious fact is the presence of only ONE instrumental track. If you're used to the long jams and instrumental interplay from albums past, forget it. With Finn on board, the songs are short and vocal-driven (Usually by Finn. Chris sings very little this time around). You won't hear the band jamming together very much either; the songs average about 3 minutes each. Finn's guitar solos and verses are the focal point of the album, Keith and Chris seem to stand aside with less presence than before, but their playing is still very strong even if it only backs the guitars. When it comes down to it, this 38 minute album is a new sound from an entirely new band.
But like I said, I do enjoy this album a great deal, just in a different way than I enjoy The old Bitchwax. And what Bitchwax album would be complete without a classic rock cover? The highlight of this album for me was their version of Deep Purple's "Maybe I'm a Leo". As far as covers go, it's no "Crazed Fandango", but it does make this album a lot more enjoyable.
One small fact that needs pointing out is the rediculous, amateur CD production from Meteor City. You will notice that several of the CDs track times are miss-matched with the music! Track 2, for instance, starts 4 seconds before "The Destroyer" is finished. If the music get's 3 stars, the actual packaging get's 1.
You can break it down any way you like. Some people are going to hate that Ed is gone (Note the blatant attack in "The Passenger"), others will be pleased with Finn's playing. Personally I think Ed was miles above Finn's playing, but the new Bitchwax has tapped into a whole new kind of energy: one that fails to rival the Bitchwax of old, but still stands above a lot of other music right now. I think Bitchwax is one of the best bands going right now, and 3 is a step in the right direction. It's no Atomic Bitchwax I or II, it's no "The Hustle is On", but it's damn good.
one of the best power-trios in all of heavy rock.......2005-09-11
I wasn't all that familiar with Atomic Bitchwax when Ed Mundell was in the band, but I was a big fan of Finn Ryan's previous band, Core. I have to admit, I haven't even heard the entire CD (only samples of it), but I recently saw them play live the other night (and I'm pretty sure they played at least half of the songs from this CD). man, they were absolutely incredible. to say that they rocked the house would be an understatement. they have got to be truly one of the greatest power-trios in all of rock. each member is a master of their instrument, and can play the hell out of it. pure, blues/boogie, heavy, space-rock. don't call them stoner-rock. they are way beyond this label. if you are a fan of Queens Of The Stone Age, Monster Magnet, Clutch, and any of Wino's bands (Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, Hidden Hand), then you NEED this CD... bad.
the best rock record in years.............2005-09-11
I gotta come clean: I was really skeptical about the continued viability of the New Jersey power trio the Atomic Bitchwax once it lost guitar god Ed Mundell completely to his day job in Monster Magnet. 3 proves my lack of faith disturbing. Former Core leader Finn Ryan fills Mundell's shoes quite ably, providing not only the prerequisite hot solos and molten riffage, but also his soulful voice as well. Bassist Chris Kosnik and drummer Keith Ackerman respond to the new blood by sounding more inspired than they have since...well, ever. Inspired riffs flow as like beer, Kosnik hits new peaks as both singer and writer and the energy level could light up all of Hoboken. "Dark Chi," "Going Guido" and "You Oughta Know" smoke like a forest fire. "The Passenger" slays, despite an annoying electronic vocal filter; the snarky libretto both shakes its head sadly at Mundell's departure and gives him the finger on the way out. "Half As Much" throws the rules out the window for an almost avant-garde take on the whole cosmic stoner rock thing.
<3> is going to be the riffmonster to beat this year; Queens of the Stone Age rocks like this only in their dreams.

Customer Reviews:
Second Effort.......2005-01-06
Apparently determined to remain dedicated to the musical notions established on "Further," Solace nevertheless pushes the envelope toward crisper production values and a slightly more radio-friendly sound on "13." While Wino is not one of my personal favorites (blasphemy, I know), the collaborative piece "Common Cause" is telling if for no other reason than that the band wants to play to a slightly expanded community. This doesn't mean that they've lightened up - the attack of unnaturally heavy metal continues, and it's certainly no drop in quality from their first album.
The album is not quite what it could be, though, as it seems that in trying to remain faithful to a sound, Solace has not explored much new territory. The sound is only marginally different, and while there are some memorable moments ("Rice Burner" is my personal favorite), there's really nothing new here to think about. That's not entirely a bad thing - "Further" was a fantastic album. We can, however, consider this sonic territory sufficiently covered - let's see where this very good, potentially great, band goes from here.
13 Kills!.......2003-02-07
Solace '13'
Made up of former members of Godspeed and their friends from various New Jersey outfits, Solace is one of the new crop of bands that are doing their best to break new ground in heavy music and move away from the stoner rock sound that had been so prevalent in the past few years. On 13, these guys tear into it with some really groovy and psychedelic tracks that pack a real punch.
The opening track "Loving Sickness/Burning Fuel" is as good a blueprint for the band's sound as any of the other 11 songs. The sludgy guitar sound and aggressive playing style of Tommy Southard drive the songs. Bassist Rob Hultz and drummer John Proveaux get right into the pocket, ala Butler and Ward, to lay down a heavy groove. Lead Singer Jason comes howling out of the darkness, with a crisp clean voice that is haunting and soulful (not just another growler like too many vocalists these days.) It is full-bore power rock, with a very doom metal bent, that is both vibrant and potent. Many critics have been comparing them to Sabotage-era Sabbath, but that seems a bit limited. While they pick up some of the groove from that album, the overall tone harkens more to the gloom of Alice In Chains' Dirt or some of Goatsnake's better tracks.
There's a great mix of songs here, with styles ranging from the laid-back "Common Cause" to the explosive "In the Oven" to the ultra-mellow "Try." The production by Eric Rachel and Southard is superb, capturing the thickness of the guitars and the punch of the drums. Every time Southard slams down the wah pedal on a riff, during "Once Around The Sun," "Sled Heavy," or "King Alcohol," it tears through your skull. Doom/Stoner legend Scott "Wino" Weinrich also makes a guest appearance, playing lead guitar on "Indolence" and singing lead on "Common Cause." They even give a nod to doom-metal pioneers Pentagram with a cover of "Forever My Queen," while also paying tribute to Agnostic Front with a cover of "With Time."
Overall, it's an explosive album that breaks any genre labels you can slap on it. Best of all, it gets better with each listen. - Ken Wohlrob, from Bully Magazine online

An acquired taste!.......2004-07-08
I thought that Blind Dog's first album, "The Last Adventures..." would be a tough one to top; was I wrong. "Captain Dog Rides Again" is killer cool music. I would liken it to a crossbreed of earlier Clutch jam rock with mid-90's COC, but more uptempo, and "electric." The rhythms are tight, the singing gruff, powerful and satisfying, and the guitar playing stellar within the song structures. For a three man band these guys sure carve out some full, heavy & raw, blusey metal. No sludge here, as all songs move at a good clip, and tend to pound out their own time. The instrumental work here kicks ass!

Named Wino for a reason.......2006-06-23
This album, while musically masterful as they unleash a great onslaught of stoner rock riffs and all, was hard to listen to for me. Wino may be a talented musician, but cripes does he whine about the government a lot. I'm not saying anything about my political affiliation because it doesn't matter what you consider yourself, the political whining is so prevalent in this album it is hard to enjoy. I really tried hard to enjoy the great music they were playing but for some reason they're agenda to complain about the government really bothered me. Music is a huge part of my life and i take it seriously but when bands think, "hey lets use
< (key word here [as in manipulate]) music to promote our political beliefs" it makes me sick. this is a free country and your fine to promote your beliefs but when it ruins good music like what was laid down in this album, it should be considered a crime. so to sum it all up, great music, too much "Wino"ing. When did music cease to be music for everyone to enjoy and become some political battlefield?
another awesome wino album.......2006-03-20
this album rocks a must have for the wino fans out there......
What is the Hidden Hand?.......2005-06-23
I bought both Hidden Hand CDs on a gut feeling, hadn't heard of Wino's other great bands, nothing. I had heard praise of Wino, saying he played the bass like a Giant, and the description couldn't be more apt.
Those who find the music depressing are misinterpreting it, I believe. From his view, its just a sad story he has to tell, but there is a lot of hope. Maybe that comes out more in the follow up album, but they are both great.
As for " a totalitarian police state" being hinted at, yes, he is talking about conspiracy. But he is talking about every day citizens becoming the sheep-herders, the society that polices itself, without realizing it.
The title of the album itself refers to the use of religion in the control of the masses, "We've heard it all before, all the lies and even more." Goes the song "Screw the Naysayers"
Don't judge this CD by the first track (all the rest are great), or by those who think it is pessimistic.
"Hidden Hand is here to stay"
Keep that bass player away from the mic........2004-04-30
As a bassist I feel safe in saying that it is generally an ominous sign for a band when the bassist wants to start singing. There are certainly exceptions to the rule (ie. Motorhead) but it should be noted that the last album that the great Spirit Caravan (Wino's last band) released was the first one where they finally gave in and let the bassist sing a song - and then the band broke up! I mean, with the greatest voice in stoner/doom in the band, what on earth is this competent bassist with an extremely average voice doing singing most of the songs? IN additon, his lyrics are kinda hokey and awkward sounding forced rhymes abound. The music is still heavy and crunchy and the guitar playing is awesome. It's still a Wino project and worth having but the band's eagerness to get their message across seems to result in the music simply being a dressing for the message rather than something that forms a synergy with it and enhances it. Without Wino's guitar solos and his occasional vocals, this disc could easily be indistinguishable from a thousand other heavy bands we've all heard screaming about government mind control and the healing power of organic foods. It's a righteous message for these times, but the Dead Kennedys did it far, far better.
Something old, something new.......2004-02-26
It's not necessarily a bad thing, but the Hidden Hand isn't just more of the same Wino. I came to this really wanting more in the vein of cosmic/psychedelic style Spirit Caravan, and was initially crushingly disappointed. I think the track order more than anything else gave me a very bad initial impression. In particular, listen to the samples of "Bellicose Rhetoric," "For All The Wrong Reasons," and "Screw the Naysayers." The music is much rawer than Wino's recent work. These, to me, will probably appeal more to the fans of the harsh Obsessed songs rather than some of the more melodic and psychedelic St. Vitus and Spirit Caravan songs. Throwing those grating songs at the beginning of the CD was a huge negative to me and I put the CD away for awhile, severely disappointed. The liner notes also turned me off-- it's obviously that Wino and crew are really coming at you from a far Left viewpoint, but they don't knock you over the head with it in the lyrics...or maybe I'm not listening that hard. Anyway, I don't buy CDs for political punditry and spend more time enjoying the music than analyzing the lyrics.
When I first heard Wino in St. Vitus, it took repeated hearings for me to really get it, and Hidden Hand likewise really deserves repeated listening. I still don't like the songs I mentioned, but for the Psychedelic Doom fan, the album is a worthwhile purchase, especially for the tracks that aren't sampled here. There are some songs that really come off great to me-- "Prayer for the Night" won't disappoint the Psychedelic fan at ALL, it a tremendous instrumental song. "The Last Tree" is great. "The Hidden Hand" sort of bridges the gap, and the rest of the album is really enjoyable.
If you're a Spirit Caravan or a Psychedelic Doom Metal fan, this album would probably be a good purchase. The album, overall, will deliver what you follow Wino for (even if you have to reburn it minus a track or two...) .... It's definitely not recycled SC, but Wino's heart is still in it and I think it will come through for you.
