The concept for this Texan folk duo's CD is a collection of driving songs. Some of us would prefer not to drive for very long to barely overhauled versions of such overdone tunes as Guy Clark's "L.A.Freeway" or James Taylor's "Bartender's Blues." Which is to say that the Hearnes, whose voices are not particularly distinct, either alone or in harmony, are basically as good as their material--they need more obscure stuff like Robert Earl Keen's gracefully melancholy "Paint the Town Beige" or the great old Del Reeves trucking hit, "Lookin' at the World Through a Windshield," with Craig Eastman's motorvatin' fiddle licks. By the time they close with Clark's sweet "Fools for Each Other," they've just barely managed to battle their concept to a draw. --John Morthland

3 out of 5 stars Good Listenin' American Songs.......2005-03-03

Just bought this from the dust bin at a favorite music store. It's sweet. The songs are straight forward Americana and Bill & Bonnie sing without the in-yer-face frills that can so easily ruin a tune. They are genuine, front porch artists and this is a true easy going feel good cd. I wonder what John Morthland (Amazon Reviews) was listening to?

5 out of 5 stars The Southwest shines through in every song. I love it!.......2000-09-13

Bill and Bonnie's husky and hearty sounds make me lonesome for the clubs and the mountains they call home - Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. There's country style backup on traditionals including one of Bill's heroes, Buck Owens. There's mandolins and other instrumental and vocal support from Herb Peterson and Chris Hillman. Their harmonies with Bonnie on her featured song are haunting - shades of Linda or Emmylou, two of Bonnie's favorites. "Bartender's Blues", "L.A. Freeway", and "Ridin' Behind" bring back the best, and Bill's pickin' is, as usual, incredibly good. This is a collection you won't want to miss! "Mr. Record Man," Set up another Bonnie solo or two next time, "won't you please!" Marilyn Smith, Louisville, Ky

4 out of 5 stars Bill and Bonnie Hearne Watch Life Through a Windshield.......2000-08-26

Bill and Bonnie Hearne are two Texans transplanted to Santa Fe, New Mexico. During their thirty-year career, they have influenced a generation of musicians. Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, and Tish Hinojosa can be counted among them. There are few joys greater than watching a guitar picker watch Bill Hearne for the first time. Jaws drop. Bonnie's piano helps to create what has been called "rollicking, thumping country soul." With time, Bill's voice has become richer and Bonnie's voice more clear. Together their voices interweave in ways that only thirty years of harmonizing will allow. On this album, Bill and Bonnie have added the vocal harmonies of Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Chris Hillman and Herb Pederson.

While Bill and Bonnie have presented no original material on this album, they have long been known for their careful selection of material. As Nanci Griffith writes in the liner notes, "As a songwriter, once you've been sung by Bill and Bonnie Hearne, you're sung." Included on this album are songs by James Taylor, Buck Owens, Guy Clark, Bob Dylan, Robert Earl Keen, Butch Hancock, and Chuck Pyle.

This is a strong effort by Bill and Bonnie. My only regret is that Bonnie is not featured more than she is.

When your plan is to bring the sounds of AC/DC and Uncle tupelo together, It's a pretty damned ballsy musical endeavor believe me. Unitas pulls it off nicely. Unitas brings together members of Hot water music and Discount respectively, but if you're expecting a blend between the two, you're in for a huge disappointment. Alt-country mixed with punk and southern rock.

Imagine if Chamberlain, Avail and Skynyrd got together to write an album, and you might come close.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album of the Year.......2002-02-22

This record will change your life for the better. I had honestly never heard of them before, despite their all star line-up. But then on one fateful day, I went to a rock show in Philadelphia to see the Cro(w)s, formerly the Sheryl Cro(w)mags, and Unitas was the headlining band. Needless to say, they blew me away. And as awesome as they are live, to be able to sit in your house and feel the music penetrate you in an intimate setting is pure heaven. With members of Hot Water Music, the now defunct Discount, along with HWM's tour manager, and with influences from Uncle Tupelo to REM to AC/DC, you would be crazy not to pick this record up. So "Get in the Game" and experience the joy that is UNITAS.

Folk-rock with just the right amount of edge for sharp ears. Moody, kind, big-hearted, kick-ass -- one interesting song after another. The third release from eclectic folk-rock artist Eileen Hemphill-Haley, "Porch Songs" welcomes the listener as if sharing the inside scoop on a myriad of experiences. "EH-H tells a story that is all of our stories. Finding yourself in her lyrics is a startling and remarkable experience. It's a memorable time with the new cd, "Porch Songs" (Keri Green, Jefferson Public Radio).
