About the Artist
Babaloo was created in a Jamaica Plains (Boston) basement in 1995 by Oopsy 'Unca'B' Wallace, the bands lively -I'm talking on crank lively- French lead singer/songwriter who looks a bit like Jean Claude Van Damme, and Smith Crankshaft, the bands gorgeous and talanted singer/songwriter/lead guitar player known in some circles as 'the Queen of Ju-Ju guitar'. Members of the band now include Slim Goodbody (free bass), Pongo Jankowitz (boom bap, vocals), El Gallo (trombone, perc. tree, big drum, vocals), La Zik (trumpet, flugelhorn, perc. tree, big drum, vocals), Ozain (congas, perc.,vocals), and new member Dean Martini (guitar, perc.). The band tours the east coast (primarily the Boston and NYC areas). Babaloo won the 'best local world music' award in Boston in 1998.

lizzy lizzy golden throat-.......2006-06-03
I purchased this lp in 81 and it remains a favorite. there are those who could construe lizzy's vocal approach as art school pretension but I always found her hiccuping sub-poetics to be endlessly endearing-(recognizing the Rimbaudian connection may help). Instrumentally the lp is quite strong-Lizzy's vocals being the 5th element-a sort of neo/afro-carib rhythm section led by percussionist wally badarou. enjoy along with press color '79/rosa yemen'78 , however, less sure of her later work.
Irritating.......2006-04-17
I was excited when I first purchased this album because I had never owned a Lizzy Mercier Descloux album before and I knew that she was a cult figure. That said, I was majorly disappointed when I listened to it for the first time. There are no real lyrics to speak of, just Lizzy making weird sounds or repeating words in her heavy French accent that don't make any sense. On top of that, the music is very herky-jerky, stop/start, sputtery, and tends to sound the same track after track. The album was recorded in Nassau, in the Bahamas, and there is a very Bahamas feel to it, but the individual songs are not that different from one another and eventually the overall sound gets irritating. If you are into that sort of thing, then you will love this album, but for me it is all about the lyrics and the voice, and I just can't connect with this album. The songs "Les Baisers D'Amants" and "The Sun Is Shining" are probably the two best on the album. Ze Records is in the process of reissuing all of the albums in Lizzy's repertoire and I'm hoping that the others sound better than this one.
One of maybe three or four of my all-time favorites..........2004-09-04
...I played this so much when it came out on vinyl in '82 that I almost got tossed out of the loft I was living in. Crazy, intelligent music -- all I've had of it the past twenty years or so, since I lost the LP, has been a crummy cassette. Now with the CD out (and with five "new" tracks!) I can listen to it all the time again. Glad I don't have roommates any longer!
Lizzy was just amazing. She died a few months ago, but her timeless music lives on.

Love Punk Mambo.......2001-06-21
Just have to say that this is some of the funnest music I have ever heard. This CD was recommended to me by a friend. In fact, tomorrow I am going to see Babaloo live in NYC! Can't wait because I know it will be a blast. You should buy Babaloo.
Babaloooooooo!.......2001-06-17
As a Boston native, I've been going to Babaloo shows for a few years now, and they just keep getting better. This is one of the most amazing bands I've ever heard, mainly because of the amazing range of different musical styles they employ. Their African, reggae, mambo and merengue sounds are wonderfully authentic. This CD features some of my favorite songs of theirs, including 2 songs sung by the lovely Smith Crankshaft, who is no longer in the band, but she has been known to grace us with her presence once in a while. Definitely buy this CD, but if you really want the essence of Babaloo, check out one of their live shows and be completely blown away. Enjoy!
Best Live Show.......2000-10-16
Babaloo is exhilirating, entoxicating, envigorating. And even if I didn't grow up in Jamaica Plain too, I would still say that! 2nd only to the singular experience of Babaloo LIVE is this CD. Buy it, and listen often. You'll be a happier person for it.
A little bit of everything.......1999-10-09
I've been at their concert on 1998's Thanksgiving at the HOUSE OF BLUES in Boston and I have to admit - It was an excellent session, lots of drive, energy, fun. I was a bit disappointed when I purchased the CD - I think if recorded live , they would have sounded fresher. Music on the CD is a bit slow for me, however the great diversity of musical styles, cultures, instruments and languages still makes BABALOO a worthwile to listen at anytime. I look forward to get their second CD.
A must buy for all.......1999-09-19
"Punk Mambo" is the epitome of "world music." Their all inclusive punky-poppy-rocky-boppy-happy-go-lucky sound that makes even those with two left feet want to dance. The lyrics are in English, French, Spanish, Swahili... and more. Because they draw from many different cultural sounds and musical traditions, they appeal to every audience member they enounter. At concerts, everyone boogies: punks, skaters, preps, kids, geriatrics, baby boomers...people from every race and all walks of life. (Perhaps their ability to meld many different sounds comes from Babaloo's conception in Jamiaca Plain, a great little neighborhood of Boston, where many races, classes and creeds can get along.) No matter where your music taste lies, you chould check out their two CDs: "Punk Mambo," and "Hardcore Juju," both being a spunky synthesis of mambo, reggae, salsa, ska, rock, juju, punk, hardcore, & merengue.
