Be-boppin away!.......2007-05-13
My 15 month old Loves this cd! The songs are so up-beat and the lyrrics are extrememly catchy! It's a great way to entertain the little ones!
New Songs! Yeeeah!.......2007-03-14
This CD is very catchy, lots of great new original songs and some familiar ones from our childhood too (Row row row your boat). The Wiggles crew did some nice songwriting for this CD, and although the songs are fun and singable like all the Wiggles tunes, these are a little more jazzy and have great variety. My kids instantly fell in love with this CD and request it in the car everytime we drive somewhere. The Racing to the Rainbow DVD is also very good! This is the last CD with Greg doing the singing, worth the money. Give this one an A+ !

Longtime followers of the artist once again known as Prince won't be surprised by the spiritual content of his erratic yet exhilarating new CD. After all, Prince has been straddling the gulf between the sacred and the profane for most of his career. Yet the almost nakedly religious tone of The Rainbow Children is compelling. Witness (and that's the operative word) the airy closing track "Last December," in which Prince and a choir proclaim "In the name of the Father and the name of the Son / We need 2 come together, come 2gether as one." The release is palpable, and throughout much of this CD, Prince, motivated by this love of the spirit, sounds as good as he has in years. From the gentle waltz "She Loves Me 4 Me" to the laid-back jazzy vibe of "Mellow," redemption is laced underneath the grooves. Even when Prince veers way off into left field (as he does with the cartoonish narrative throughout the CD), he makes a joyful and funky noise. --Amy Linden

Prince's Overwelming Musical Feast Of A Comeback.......2006-06-16
'The Rainbow Children' is a CD that does an awful lot.Mainly it serves as the reintroduction recording of Prince after eight years as TAFKAP but it's also the birth of a new band, titled after the album featuring musicians such as jazz reedsman Najee and Larry Graham. It was also labeled as Prince most controversial recording-apparently one of many. What is the album?Basically 'The Rainbow Children' is a jazz-funk fusion styled spiritual epic designed to illustrate Prince's conversion to Jehovah's Witness. The story is told by the same basic deep voiced narrator who opened up "1999" twenty years earlier. This recording showcases Prince's musical rebirth with an entirely new direction, one that in a lot of ways picked up where recordings like 'Sign O The Times' and 'Lovesexy' left off.The opening title song features a chorus of sings along with Prince illustrating the CD's themes on a very old fashion, minimal jazzy-soul tune. The majority of the songs here are very stripped down to focus attention on the highly religious lyrics-namely the ballads "Muse To The Pharoh","Everywhere","She Loves Me For Me" and the unusually sexy "Mellow".As for some of the more uptempo numbers "Digital Garden","The Sensual Everafter" and "Last December" all feature a number of dynamic percussive arrangements and are highly dramatic in effect. What impress me most of course are the four funk tunes-all of which are more basic and stripped down as well, featuring a strong rhythm section and great tempos.Larry Graham permeates "The Work" while "1+1+1 Is 3" gets even deeper into the groove."Family Name" goes even deeper-a racially charged tune musically sharing some lineage with Stevie Wonder's "Black Man",but done more subversively and told by what sounds like a trio of robots. Then it launces into the celebratory "The Everlasting Now",one of the finest songs on the CD that keeps the rhythm flowing from end to end.Taken together "The Rainbow Children" is a very complicated and eccentric piece of music with a lot of unexpected twists and turns. It features a smaller group of musicians then Prince's other bands and it shares a lot more in common with jazz, gospel and psychedelic funk then any of Prince's previous music.None of the songs are particularly single worthy (same as with 'Lovesexy for the most part) but once you turn this music on it is so captivating you won't want to turn it off, even if your not a Jehovah's Witness. And for that this is another impressive triumph in a long line of them for Prince.
Love It.......2006-04-06
I will say that this is an awesome CD, A little funck, R&B, and jazz. I know some of the lyrics may be hard to understand especially if you're not a Jehovah's Witness, but overall it's a great CD for everybody. I'd like to mention that some people have misunderstood the lyrics as I've read in some of the reviews. Jehovah's Witnesses were holocaust victims and we take it very seriously. I don't get why come reviewers think he was minimizing it. (as a witness he wouldn't do that)He's just saying that slavery is just as bad and he has a right to his opinion. The music does not put women down. Also he doesn't mean to put whites down. That should be obvious because in one of the songs he says "white and black is a fallacy." (meaning we're all the same) And his CD IS NOT POLITICAL EITHER. He just means that God will replace human governments with his own government. It's called Rainbow Children because God wants people of all colors and races (thus the name rainbow colors of a rainbow)to live here on earth in peaceful conditions under his kingdom government. I'm not sure who he's referring to when speaking of the banished ones. (he made the term as he does with alot of the terminology) But as a Jehovah's Witness I can say he's probably talking about people that won't accept God's government (or perhaps the demons)And no he is not talking about Descendants of Satan and Eve (we don't believe in that) Anyway I just want to say that is a great although often misunderstood CD.
Outta this world!.......2006-04-02
This album is something that can change the face of music at any given time or genre. Prince displayed a solidity in the depths of music. The Rainbow Children now have a personality that cannot be duplicated once Prince dubbed it a title. "Muse to the Pharoah" was an extrodinary forum of simplicity with just keys, bass, and drums but his harmonies gave it an orchestra like sound. "1+1+1=3" is a spacious funk that kills the standard format with a rebellious flow that leaves funk-a-likes in the dust. Prince is a seasoned artist with the ability to do what he wants to do and make it sound extraordinary, hence The Rainbow Children.
RAINBOW CHILDREN , IT'S TIME 2 RISE.......2006-04-01
In 2001, Prince released the ground-breaking Rainbow Children album. Prince has created a album that reminds me of "Pink Floyd - Dark Side on the Moon" and "The Who - Tommy". In the sense that each track plays like a story. Rainbow Children is a 14 track opera style presentation! Each song takes you on a journey. Tracks like the Rainbow Children, The Work pt.1, 1+1+1=3, She Loves Me 4 Me, EverLasting Now deliver the album. Prince has created some powerful material here. Overall, the Rainbow Children is showcase of how Prince continues to evolve. It's an album with a classic story book telling presentation that musicians in the 60's and 70's did naturally. Prince rolls the dice and wins big!

Mostly Majestic.......2007-05-17
Most of the tracks were excellent but some were a bit long winded.Tracks by Spencer Wyatt best on the disc and made it all worth while.
An excellent olio of music styles.......2007-02-23
Do you like ethereal New Age? Gotcha covered. Does Boogie piano get your toes a-tappin'? Check. Is Swing more your thing? It's here. All fine reasons to add this sound track to your music collection. As for the movie, I like to think it Carrey's best work. The man has the most expressive face in Moviedom. Regarding the story, it's set in the early Fifties during the rabid Communist scaremongering headed by Senator Joseph McCarthy. One result was the blacklisting of suspected Communists and sympathizers in liberal Hollywood, of which our protagonist Peter Appleton became a victim.
This movie is a slam dunk.......2006-10-29
To hear the roar of the crowd as the player goes in to slam dunk the basketball in the professional sports arenas, this film equals those thrills for the audience as Jim Carrey (Luke Trimble)takes us through the mind of someone that has amnesia and unwittingly becomes the hometown war hero set in 1945 period. Stars abound in this film like character actors Martin Landau and James Wittemore.Boy meets girl, they fall in love, then a twist in the plot as Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) is accused of being a communist, similar to the Army McCarthy hearings for those old enough to remember. It all turns out like everyone wants.....Ed Lynch 10/29/06
Boogie Majestic.......2003-08-07
This soundtrack is the best soundtrack I have heard in a long time. Bringing the swing big band music was fantastic.I wish they would have included Pennsylvania 6-5000 in the soundtrack though. This by far is the best movie soundtrack next to Swing Kids. So buy this soundtrack. This is real music.
An answer for a question from Texas.......2003-02-15
Music fan from Texas, Yes both songs are there and as strange as it may sound, those where the two songs that cought my attention when I saw the movie. The one with the clarinet is called "Stranger on the shore" while the one with the piano is called "Boogie Woogie Stomp" I believe. The soundtrack as a whole is flawless and I strongly reccomend it.

- Interview With William Kapell
Amazon.com essential recording
Blessed with transcendent technique and an affinity for big, bold Romantic works, William Kapell has been hailed as America's greatest homegrown pianist. This comprehensive collection of his complete recorded output, previously unreleased recordings, and broadcast tapes adds luster to a reputation that's become legendary since his tragic death in a plane crash at age 31. The earliest recordings, from the mid-1940s, bristle with raw energy and virtuosic flourishes tempered by an innate musicality that rises above mere display.
The disc coupling Khachaturian and Prokofiev concertos is charged with excitement; the Rachmaninoff pairing of the Paganini Variations and the Concerto No. 2 weds the Grand Romantic style to poetic lyricism; and an inspired Liszt group is charged with dynamic energy. Best may be the two Chopin discs: spontaneous, rhythmically flexible sonatas and mazurkas. The later recordings demonstrate the repose that comes with artistic maturity, and the "live" broadcasts reveal Kapell's warmth and spontaneity in concert. Splendid transfers help make this long-awaited set appealing to music lovers in general, as well as piano buffs. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Very touched.......2006-09-24
I wrote my doctoral dissertation on William Kapell (we share the same school, and my teacher was a student of his), and to still see the outpouring of admiration and love for Kapell's art is still very moving for me.
In Memorium.......2005-10-29
I heard William Kapell play the Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini with the fledgling Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in the late 1940's or very early 1950's. My only memory of the occasion is that I was enthralled. Kapell has held me in thrall ever since.
A few years later, in the middle 50's, I bought Kapell's recording of the same work, with Fritz Reiner and the Robin Hood Dell Orchestra (alias of The Philadelphia Orchestra). I still have that LP, though I wore it out long ago. It was the beginning of my musical education. But since 1998, we have had this wonderful box of reissues from the vaults of RCA. The sound is mostly excellent, considering the age of the monophonic originals. To this day, Kapell's Rachmaninov Rhapsody remains-in my opinion-the most impassioned, yet the most musical, reading of the piece ever recorded. No one had, or has, Kapell's combination of white-hot temperament, technical brilliance, and musical insight. We have had musical geniuses; technical wizards abound. It is the combination of these gifts, as Kapell possessed them in particular, married to his incendiary passion, that made him unique.
He was still learning, and he was learning at such an astounding rate! He had moved from Khachaturian to the most unforgettable Chopin B minor Sonata ever recorded in little more than a decade. His deep throated, noble, and articulate Bach has caused some to speculate that Glenn Gould might have found his inspiration in Kapell. One Gould biographer, and a New York critic, wrote that the reverse was true. The critic acknowledged the error, in print, noting that Kapell could not have been influenced by Gould's style since he had been dead for two years by the time of Gould's debut recital in New York City in 1955.
The lyrical side of romantic music is not what Kapell was or is known for, not his "style" as people remember him now. But listening to the lyrical music in this set shows a side of him that was, nevertheless, as real as any, and perhaps more revealing. It also gives us a notion of what we might have expected of William Kapell had he lived a normal span of years and played a normal variety of music. In a live performance, he plays Chopin's Nocturne, Op. 9, No. 1, with melting legato and exquisite timing: his innate sense about when to tug on the beat and when to surge forward makes the music breathe. His use of dynamic variety demands the greatest respect: at one point, the repetition of a melodic phrase is but a pale echo of its first statement. His tonal palette is no less wondrous. When a deep bass note suddenly appears, early in the A section of the ABA structure, it sounds-not loud nor quiet, not muffled nor distinct-but awesomely subterranean. Kapell begins the piece without much sustaining pedal, but in the B section, he subtly adds more and more. Then, when the A section returns near the end, the pedal disappears. This dramatic change in color-along with Chopin's change of key-seems like the parting of clouds. We are in the hands of two masters here, Chopin and Kapell. Kapell gave this performance in Carnegie Hall in February of 1945, when he was twenty-two years old.
In the Bach and Chopin works I've discussed, the steely, percussive tone that some speak of is nowhere to be heard. Rather, we hear a full, rich, and complex piano tone. In the Chopin Sonatas, the Debussy pieces, and the Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Debussy, and Albeniz, the sound Kapell produces is beautiful and varied.
He was a chamber musician of the first order, as his collaborations with Heifetz prove. (He was one of the very few musicians who had the force of personality to make Heifetz accompany HIM. And you can hear it.) And if you've never heard Rachmaninov's great Cello Sonata, played here with the grand Russian/German cellist Edmund Kurtz, you're in for a treat. There are several fine, modern stereo recordings, but this one is special. The piano part is very important-Rachmaninov did write it, after all-and Kapell is magnificent. This was Rachmaninov's next published work after the 2nd Piano Concerto, to give you an idea of its melodic grandeur. If there is a flaw here, it is that the piano is recorded too far back, relative to the cello.
Kapell died on October 30, 1953. He had just turned thirty-three. He played his last recital in Geelong, Australia, on the 22nd. It included the Chopin 2nd Piano Sonata which contains the well-known "Marche funèbre." That performance is included here, transferred from the original acetates. It is a great performance but very hard to listen to now, in light of what was to follow just over a week later. I am writing this one day short of the 52nd anniversary of Kapell's death. Had he lived until today, he would be younger than either Earl Wild or Ivan Moravec, both of whom are still making magnificent music. For those of us who love William Kapell's music, it is heartbreaking to consider, and fruitless. Thank Heaven we have recordings like the ones in this set. They are essential for any lover of good music.

Priceless Souvenirs from a Rare Genius: Ave Atque Vale.......2005-10-28
During the last century we have had many tragic losses in the arts, often affecting men and women who are at the peak of their careers, shimmering with excellence, only to be silenced by death and all too often, by accidental death. The names of Anton Webern, Fritz Wunderlich, WG Sebald, Sylvia Plath, Dinu Lipatti, and so many others arise, but none as tragic as the death of William Kapell in 1953.
William Kapell is still considered by most as the America's greatest pianist, even fifty odd years after his death at the age of 31 in a plane crash. Those who heard him perform still rhapsodize over the magic he created. Those of us who are left with only recordings, such as this spectacular boxed set of all of his recordings, can only be uplifted by the man's genius, his extraordinary technical facility, and his intuitive, profound approach to the great works of music.
All styles of music were easily accessible to Kapell. Listen to the Mozart, Bach, Scarlatti, Paganini and Mendelssohn and try to imagine performances of more clarity and finesse than these. His Chopin is well represented in this set and glows with the uncanny power and tenderness that Chopin combined in his works. His works for solo piano by Rachmaninov and Shostakovich are the gold standard, and yet his Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mussorgsky and Liszt raise the bar for excellence that has since not been excelled. Joyously this set includes concerti including Prokofiev, Beethoven, Khachaturian, and Rachmaninov with the various conductors who saw Kapell's gifts and championed them.
The memory of this great artist is felt throughout the year, but never as acutely as on October 29th which marks the date of his cruel death. The world was brightened for too short a time by William Kapell, yet because of his recorded legacy his legend lives on. This is an impossibly fine box set of treasures. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 05
Poetry without words.......2004-12-14
In listening ot this collection, I think of the other 20th century pianistic genius who died tragically young: Dinu Lipatti (d. 1950). Both men excelled at Chopin but each had a thoroughly individual sound. In addition to Chopin, the Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev are especially fine. Highly recommended.
What Is Technically Difficult Is Not Always Pleasant To Hear.......2004-10-02
Piano enthusiasts might find this set incredible, but I prefer my music to be pleasant. Consider your tastes before buying.

This charming, super-casual collection began as a children's record and later became a "family" record--a designation that reflects the contributions of Nelson's daughter Amy as well as the inclusion of more "adult" material. It's difficult to think of another artist who'd pull together such a unique selection of songs. Nelson tackles odd kid-friendly little ditties from country's past such as "I'm My Own Grandpa" (a 1948 hit for Lonzo & Oscar), the Western swing favorite "Won't You Ride in My Little Red Wagon," and Jimmie Dolan's boogie "Playin' Dominoes and Shootin' Dice," a drinking-and-fighting song that is presumably a cautionary tale for the little ones. The more traditional children's fare ("Four Leaf Clover," "Playmate," title track) comes early on, but by the end of the disc Nelson seems to have lost interest in the album's original premise, moving to hardcore blues ("Outskirts of Town"), Mickey Newbury's psychedelic folk rock ("I Just Dropped In"--daddy, how do you trip on a cloud?), and Newbury's sober, complex "33rd of August." Amy Nelson wrote and sang two delightful kiddie tunes while papa Willie adds one new original, the jaunty, optimistic "Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way." To be sure, Rainbow Connection is a low-key, informal affair, and what would sound sloppy by most other artists is of course endearing by Willie. In the end, this "family CD" is like a bowl of chocolate ice cream: it ain't as special as a sundae or even a cone, but who doesn't like chocolate ice cream? --Marc Greilsamer

A great album.......2005-07-29
This is a great album by a great artist.I've bein searching for this for a while, ever since i heard his version of i'm my own grandpa.I new i had to have it.
Lost in Underland.......2003-08-27
While everyone can love one of Willie Nelson's songs, this CD is just disappointing. I was hoping for Willie. A part of him connecting here.
But, if you really listen to the songs, you will find that they are over-engineered. Somebody telling him how to sing, or simply using an amplitude cut during mid sentence. There are a lot of "rushed" lyrics... (While you can hear the real Willie in some of them.. which makes you love the CD).
You'll soon find yourself wondering why that last note faded off without a real reason. For example "Have you been half asleep" on the CD is "have you been half...." it cuts off so fast that you miss any character or value that Willie Nelson brings to a CD. But you can hear his voice carry, but, just unnaturally get cut... His voice is unmistakable, and that quality HE can bring to a song is inmistakable.
Over engineering takes it's bite away from the musician here. While I still recommend the CD, don't expect too much.
Sweet kids & adults album.......2002-05-01
Bottomline: I love this CD. What a great surprise. Hearing Willie sing Rainbow Connection almost brings a tear to my eyes (makes me feel like I am a kid again - watching Kermit the Frog sing this lovely song).
There are some just plain sweet little songs on this record. There are some fun songs, then there are some good blues songs. Point is that they are all good. The last couple of songs don't seem to fit with the whole record, but they are good songs.
I am a huge Willie fan, but the very best part of this record is his daugther Amy's two beautiful children's songs. She has a wonderful voice, and the song she wrote is fun, clever, and cute.
Highly recommend this CD.
Better every listen!.......2002-04-30
I admit it. I thought this was a silly idea for an album, and only purchased it to maintain my collection's completeness. But when I listened to it, I fell in love with its casual flair and its odd take on kiddie standards. Every time I listen to it, I love it more and more.
I am a thirty-something adult with no kids, and I love almost every song on this album (Ol' Blue excluded). This is definitely the musical equivalent of "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" : A surreal trip that leaves you happy. If you are trying to decide which of the latest WIllie albums to buy, this is the one (NOT "The Great Divide").
A laid-back afternoon with Willie & friends.......2002-03-26
Four stars may be a bit high for this CD, but three stars is not enough. Ah, never mind, the 7 and a half minute Outskirts of Town is worth at least four stars alone. This is an incredible song. Basically just Willie, Trigger, and a few friends playing some good bluesy country. This is definitely the highlight. Other standouts include covers of Mickey Newbury's The Twenty-Third of August and Just Dropped In (which is a less produced, rawer, but no less good version that on The Great Divide). I think Willie should definitely do a CD of Mickey Newbury covers.
I'll admit, at first, I felt that Willie's cover of the Rainbow Connection was really sub-par for him, but after a few listens and getting into his phrasings and jazzy guitar picking I began to like it more and more. Won't You Ride In My Little Red Wagon is a song he has done before, and this version is simple and fun as is Playmate. Ol' Blue is a get-a-lump-in-your-throat song about a dog that Willie's grandmother used to sing to him. I'm My Own Grandpa is a hilarious number that Willie does particularly well. The sole song that Willie wrote himself is Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way-which I suppose is the heart of this CD.
So why not five stars? Well, two Songs, Rock Me To Sleep and Wise Old Me, are sung by Willie's daughter, and while she is probably a sweet person, and I don't mean to be mean-her voice really grates on me. You may feel differently, but a sparsely produced effort such as this takes a lot of talent to carry off, and I'm not quite sure if this was the best way for Willie to showcase his daughter's singing. I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover sounds like it was a lot of fun to make. Unfortunately, it is not much fun to listen to.
But the great thing about a CD is that it is easy to skip tracks you don't care for. The bulk of this CD is well worth listening to. I predict you'll play tracks 9 through 13 again after you've heard it through the first time. It's just Willie in his own studio with a couple of friends making simple honest music. If you were disappointed with the lush production of The Great Divide, this is for you. If you loved The Great Divide, but also love Willie and his guitar and little else, this is for you.

FABULOUS!.......2004-01-25
We had never heard of this duo before hearing them on NPR. We ordered the CD and absolutely love it! Very humorous and clever lyrics, with fun, lyrical music. Any child who like puns and play-on-words will find this delightful. Ranks with Tom Chapin's best songs (Billy the Squid, Backwards Birthday Party, Sorry, etc.)
There is also one beautiful, lullaby-type song, "King of my Mountain" with a wonderful message about simplicity, gratitude, and positive-thinking that I (mom) have fallen in love with.
Highly recommended!
Very fun disc for kids and the adults who listen with them.......2004-01-21
I bought this disc after hearing the delightful interview with this group on NPR's Morning Edition. It is one of those rare and wonderful kid's music discs that does not insult the musical sensibilities of parents and caregivers. Everything from blues, to rock, to country inspires these songs that are natural for dancing and singing along. The best part is watching my two-year old's creative dance steps as he bops along to Trout Fishing in America.
Not just for kids........2003-10-29
I think I enjoyed this CD as much as my children. I Get Ideas is so much like my seven year old that it was scary but fun to look at life from another perspective. Each track is silly, intelligent, outrageous and most of all funny and there's something here for everyone. We play this CD over and over and over in the car and we have yet to tire of it. When is the next album coming out?

For sheer entertainment value, it's hard to find a classical CD that will beat this one. Gloria Cheng has chosen an astonishing variety of 20th-century piano music with nothing in common except brevity and dance origins. The disc is full of familiar pieces (Debussy, Scriabin, Ravel, Prokofiev) and entertaining novelties (Albright, Martinu, Poulenc, Ginastera). Donald R. Davis's exercise in creative plagiarism, "Illicit Felicity," rates a special mention for its ingenuity. But really, unless you're allergic to Philip Glass, there isn't a loser on the entire program. Cheng plays brilliantly, with appropriate special emphasis on the dance rhythms of the music, and Telarc's sound engineering is typically realistic. It ain't profound, but this is still a marvelous program. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Fun to listen to!.......2000-09-18
Listening to this CD is fun. The CD has a diverse selection of contemporary dances for solo piano, ranging from familiar favorites, such as Gollywog's Cakewalk by Debussy, to lesser known and unconventional but charming works, such as del Aguila's Conga. The dances are varied and well-interpreted by Ms. Cheng, who brings poignancy to each one while maintaining throughout the CD a fun and energetic mood.
Ms. Cheng's playing is phenomenal, and I also enjoy her earlier CD of works by John Adams and Terry Riley. Both CD's show off her rich tone and appealing style, but the dance collection is the most entertaining. If you buy this CD, you'll probably find yourself listening to it frequently.
An interesting concept not quite realized.......2000-07-25
A very good concept. Take a noted pianist, in this case Gloria Cheng, and work with her on a program of 23 short works or short sections of larger works, all of which are one form or another of Dance--and you might come up with something good or possibly just a mixed bag. The Telarc release
(CD-80549) is such a program. The playing is wonderful, the results what you might expect, alas: a mixed bag.
A very definite positive about this program is that almost every selection was new to me. After all, how many of us are familiar with works like Miguel del Aguila's "Conga," Philip Glass's "Modern Love Reel," or Paul Hindemith's "Shimmy"? I mean, really! So there is much Joy of Discovery afforded by this CD; but with all but one piece running under 5 minutes (and that one at 9:26), a certain cloying factor creeps in after a while, and perhaps I should recommend this be played in small sections.
But all in all, what a treasure-trove of little-known pieces.
