Like their labelmates Cursive, Desaparecidos are an Omaha act with a taste for shaking up indie rock with volatile mood swings and jagged guitar rhythms. But while Cursive's songs are often deeply--sometimes painfully--personal, Desaparecidos strike out at modern complacency more than they vent personal vendettas. Led by Bright Eyes mastermind Conor Oberst, Desaparecidos use Read Music/Speak Spanish to attack public schools as halfway houses, criticize corporate culture, and refuse to pity fools and their money. Oberst's outlook on society is definitely cynical, as he spews lines like, "There are no more art forms now only capitalism," yet he defies his own words by creating music that is both thoughtfully agitated and artistically interesting. The lyrics put up only part of the act's fight, though, as the drums pound like swarms of angry fists against the machine, the guitars are their own sharp, noisy weapons, and sprinklings of commercial ads offer satirical reasons for Oberst's musical rants. Combined with Oberst practically snapping his vocal chords screaming above the buoyant racket, the effect of Read Music isn't stagnant aggression but a fervent call to both social action and physical movement, as expressed through one turbulently uplifting album. --Jennifer Maerz

1 out of 5 stars Artistically Void.......2007-02-09

I know a great deal of people will disagree with me and tell you that this is a fantastic album. However, from a strictly professional standpoint, this is album is abysmal. There is nothing to be said of talent or mastery of the members respective instruments. Rudimentary drumming, sub-par guitar, and unrefined vocals do not make music. I am honestly surprised that somebody produced this album.
There is little that distinguishes Desaparecidos from your local bar band. All the potentially appealing features boil down to trite cliché outbursts of global-claustrophobia including; Dull witted jabs at Starbucks; Disapproval of S.U.V.s; And more tired, empty, run of the mill counter capitalist whining than you could ever want.

5 out of 5 stars great cd.......2006-04-12

i wish it was a little longer, but this is a great rock cd. love the way conor screams. he has an amazing voice.

5 out of 5 stars Short Review........2006-04-05

Conor Oberst's takes his views on political/social problems and puts them into imaginitive, poetic lyrics. Lyrically, it can give some insight and can be educational. Musically, it is upbeat and suits my tastes well. If you are an Oberst fan I'm sure you'll love this band because it shows his talent in a new way, and different style.

The End.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic album........2005-11-13

Do not listen to any review that refers to this band as emo. This is an independent band with socio-political lyrics. There's not self-examination here. The music is great and the singing is inspiring. Do not listen to this if you are going to bitch about Conor Oberst's voice; you are probably not the type of person who would enjoy it. Personal highlights: Greater Omaha and The Happiest Place on Earth. This is a great album overall.

5 out of 5 stars radioactive air waves.......2005-10-12

brilliant. could and other word describe this cd? probably...but this just about sums it up. each track is imbibed with the painfully vivid words of conner oberst of bright eyes. you can hear the grit in the guitar, the anguish in every syllable- the pure genious of conner obersts lyrics is mind blowing and thought worthy. the desaparecidos have had my undying adorement since i had first purchased this amazing cd.
this cd is needed for any conner oberst/bright eyes/rockish-stylee music fan. buy this cd kiddies! its just dandy, i promise.

4 out of 5 stars Great album about corporate takeover.......2005-12-05

This is a brilliant album that I'm sure alot of small town people can relate to. During this generation, alot of towns and rural areas are being taken over by corporate companys, which result in loss of homes and jobs.
The album itself is completely different than Bright Eyes, or anything else Conor Oberst has done. Its more of a fast paced album with roaring guitars and drums. I highly recommend this album for any fan of Conor Obersts work. Add this to the collection.
