I cannot imagine my life as teenager in the 70s, without a reference to the Bee Gees music. These guys are great composers and surely, one of the best vocal groups of that era!
This collection has (almost) all of their greatest hits... The most romantic and even the "Disco" ones (how can you mend your broken heart, without dancing 'Stayin' Alive' once again? Come on...!!!)
I suggest you to get this one, unless you're so lucky to get that wonderful 4-CD box collection issued some years ago...

I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song).
I don't like the "Bee Gees" as a group. However, I do have to admit that a lot of their songs are imbedded in my mind due to TV, radio and even the occasional movie (Saturday Night Fever). The following songs are worth owning because they are a part of our cultural history and to be honest, they are just plain good (I'm not sure how Barry got away with singing like a girl, but so be it): Disc 1: Tracks 2,15,16 & 21. Disc 2: Tracks 1,2,3,4,5,6 & 7. So that's $11 worth of music for $15. The Bee Gee's songs aren't available on iTunes or Rhapsody yet, so it's up to you if you want to part with an additional $4 to get the whole CD. If you are going to buy a Greatest Hits compilation from the Bee Gees, this is the one to get.
Note: Don't forget about the three songs sung by brother Andy Gibb. "I Just Want To Be Your Everything", "Our Love (Don't Throw It All Away)", and "Shadow Dancer". Each of them are available on iTunes for a buck a piece.
Note - The song "Emotion" on Disc 2, one of their best songs, is a remix. How lame.

Don't look for a richly illustrated, critical essay-packed hagiography with this 40-track, double-disc overview of the Bee Gees recording career. In typical, telling fashion, the Brothers Gibb have eschewed such exercises in ego inflation and simply let the best of their remarkable body of music speak for itself. Through it all, their familiar voices lock together in the sort of transcendent, seemingly genetic harmony that few singers since the Everly Brothers (early Gibb inspirations) have managed. Beginning with the plaintive 1966 hit "New York Mining Disaster 1941," this set traces the Gibbs' journey from successful Beatles-era balladeers to '70s white R&B gods and the undisputed kings of disco (we're reminded here that their shrewd metamorphosis began with "Nights on Broadway" and "Jive Talkin'"--long before the mega-success of "Saturday Night Fever"). But even as that dance craze faded, again threatening to turn the Bee Gees into pop anachronisms, the Gibbs simply stepped out of the limelight for a while, turning their talents to MOR hit-making for the likes of Samantha Sang, Dolly Parton, Barbra Streisand, and Dionne Warwick. Those hits ("Emotion," "Heartbreaker," "Islands in the Stream") are featured here in modern rerecordings by the band, along with the Streisand-Barry Gibb duet, "Guilty." This is by far THE best compilation of the Bee Gees. It's one of those albums that is a must have of any collection.

The best inclusions in this are: "Spicks & Specks", "Immortality", "Heartbreaker", as well as all the "Saturday Night Fever" classics like "How Deep is Your Love" and "Night Fever". For the hopeless romantics there's even "Guilty", the duet with Barbara Streisand and Barry Gibb. Who could ask for anything more? Not me. This album is great and you should buy it, put it on and you should be dancing.

If you love Disco go for it. This is the sound of that age. What is of course amazing is that you can still hear their music on the pop radio stations and not just in the elevator and grocery store.

Great value for your money, 42 hits on two disks. Better than buying the sound track from Saturday Night Fever, as if.. this is the group that defined that movie.

Ok, so I'm not some sophisticated music critic but I grew up humming this stuff and now I use it to cut out the noise at work. Feel good, get up and get working music. What's not to like?

Trivia question: Which three artists had the most #1 songs in the '70's? Elton John, Paul McCartney, and the Bee Gees.

I read a reviewer who suggested they put the older songs on one disc and the disco on the other. One problem is that this is chronological for the most part (though the final track, "Spicks and Specks", was actually an older song), so they needed to do it the way they did to have room for the newer songs.

It includes several covered songs, and most of them were better by the covered artist ("Love Me" and "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman and "Emotion" by Samantha Sang are examples). One missing song is "Come On Over", which was a hit by Olivia Newton-John and sang by the Bee Gees on their live album.

My favorite Bee Gee hits were "Fanny (Be Tender With My Love)" and "Tragedy", with "Words", "Lonely Days", "Run To Me", "Jive Talkin'", "Stayin' Alive", :One", and "Spicks & Specks" also being tracks I like.

I was just conversing with my new amazon friend Gary G. about the BEE GEES and that I was contemplating on reviewing the BEE GEES compilation album that I'm about to review for you now. Without further delay, it is time for me to review the ultimate BEE GEES compilation album released in 2001. This one's for you Gary.

I will be writing a review on the legendary Two-CD compilation album entitled "THE BEE GEES, THEIR GREATEST HITS, THE RECORD" by one of Rock's greatest legendary bands. I give you one of Australia's many pride and joy's, the one and only, THE BEE GEES. This legendary compilation album was originally released in 2001 on Compact Disc on the Polydor Records label in association with Universal Records, a division of UMG Recordings Inc. and UTV Records. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

Australia would give Rock n' Roll some of its greatest acts. You have the legendary and beautiful OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN and the hard a*s kicking Rock n' Roll Band AC/DC. But before them, you would have THE BEE GEES to begin the Australian Invasion of the whole world. THE BEE GEES have been in the music business now for well over forty years with worldwide record sales exceeding well over 180 million and still counting. And get this, THE BEE GEES are officially in the TOP 5 MOST SUCCESSFUL RECORDING ARTISTS OF ALL-TIME. THE BEE GEES will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for kicking Disco into high gear and recording some of the greatest Disco songs for the extremely successful groundbreaking movie soundtrack landmark album "SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER" in 1977. To this very day, the "SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER" soundtrack album remains in the Top 3 as the all-time most successful album ever released of its kind. This legendary soundtrack album also remains as one of Rock's greatest achievements and contributions in Rock n' Roll history. What can I say about the Gibb brothers that hasn't already been said. When brothers Barry Gibb on vocals and guitar , Robin Gibb on vocals and the late great Maurice Gibb on vocals, bass, guitar and keyboards joined forces in the 60's, a Rock n' Roll revolution and Corporation was about to be born and take Rock n' Roll by storm. Even the youngest brother, the late great ANDY GIBB would enjoy a very successful solo career as one of the greatest teen idols of not just the 70's, but of all-time. ANDY GIBB would record successful hit songs in the 70's such as the incredible "I Just Want To Be Your Everything" and the breathtaking "Shadow Dancing." If that wasn't enough, ANDY would also co-host one of TV's most popular shows in the 70's with MARILYN MCCOO called SOLID GOLD. However, it would be ANDY GIBB'S older brothers that would forever strike gold and give Rock n' Roll some of its greatest hits of all-time. THE BEE GEES have recorded many great albums and have released many great hit singles to back their albums up through the years between the period of 1967 to 2001. This Two-CD set compilation album highlights all of THE BEE GEES great hit singles from that period. In my opinion, this legendary compilation album is a true testament of three extremely talented brothers who dared to change the sound of Rock n' Roll forever and a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was indeed, far ahead of their time.

On DISC ONE, this legendary compilation album begins with THE BEE GEES first phase from the 1960's with the rare 60's hit single "New York Mining Disaster 1941," the legendary slow beautiful soothing orchestrated "To Love Somebody," the slow beautiful orchestrated "Holiday," the beautiful breathtaking orchestrated mellow "Massachusetts," the slow beautiful loud and mellow "World," the amazing and incredible smooth orchestrated number "Words," the forever beautiful orchestrated mellow number "I've Gotta Get A Message To You," the beautifully crafted mellow number "I Started A Joke," the beautiful tear drops orchestrated mellow number "First Of May," the rare beautiful mellow orchestrated "Saved By The Bell," the mindblowing rare beautiful orchestrated number "Don't Forget To Remember," the forever BEE GEES trademark 60's mellow Rocker "Lonely Days," the forever slow beautiful orchestrated mellow Rocker and one of my most favorite BEE GEES songs ever, "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart," the slow groundbreaking mellow Rocker "Run To Me," and the hit single that would forever begin the legendary BEE GEES second phase and 70's Disco sound craze, the funkish "Jive Talkin'," the soulful funkish heartfelt "Nights On Broadway," the beautiful mellow "Fanny (Be Tender With My Love)," the forever slow beautiful and mellow and another one of my personal favorites "Love So Right," the original BEE GEES composition that gave Yvonne Elliman her first number one hit, "If I Can't Have You," another one of my personal favorites, the slow beautiful soulful smooth soothing number "Love Me" and the forever BEE GEES trademark Disco classic that would jump start Disco and help contribute in leading John Travolta to unheralded and unmatched stardom, "You Should Be Dancing." END OF DISC ONE.

DISC TWO takes where DISC ONE left off with the lead song that would begin the "SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER" soundtrack and the film, the mighty and incredible in its original long version, "Stayin' Alive," another one of my most dearest and most favorite BEE GEES slow songs ever, the slow and one of the most beautiful breathtaking songs ever, "How Deep Is Your Love," the killer genuine Disco classic from the 1977 "SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER" soundtrack with a pinch of Rock n' roll "Night Fever," another one of my personal favorites, the original BEE GEES song that gave TAVARES another hit that is also included on the soundtrack album, the genuine original and beautiful BEE GEES version of "More Than A Woman," the rare and synthesized filled number that became a hit for SAMANTHA SANG, the groundbreaking sizzler "Emotion," the forever beautiful harmonizing BEE GEES trademark soulful number "Too Much Heaven," the synthesizer filled fast paced "Tragedy," the beautiful harmonizing funkish soulful heartfelt "Love You Inside Out," one of the Top 5 best duets of all-time, the slow and beautiful Barry Gibb/Barbara Streisand love song "Guilty," the well recorded danceable synthesized number "Heartbreaker," the BEE GEES composition that became a successful number one hit for KENNY ROGERS AND DOLLY PARTON, the original BEE GEES version of "Islands In The Stream," the incredible synthesized "You Win Again," the danceable and soulful number "One," the uplifting synthesized "Secret Love," the slow beautiful and well sung "From Whom The Bell Tolls," the slow positive atmospheric acoustic number "Alone," the slow beautiful synthesized number "Immortality," the breathtaking acoustic Rocker "This Is Where I Came In" and the rare 1966 early BEE GEES classic song "Spicks & Specks." WOW! This was sure a long collection to review. May I also add that all three BEE GEES band members contributed beautiful harmonizing vocals which complimented and added more raw and crisp soothing sounds that uplifted and boosted the music to another level. I would like to also add that Barry Gibb's gifted falsetto vocal ranges are the only vocals that I would match next to Brian Wilson of THE BEACH BOYS. It is so amazing listening to all of these legendary songs together in one collection. Listening to these songs is like being in a time capsule in bringing back so many memories from my youth. I can't help but describe their slow songs as being beautiful especially since they truly are. I actually got teary eyed listening to all of the BEE GEES hits and I'm sure it will do the same for all of you too.

Overall, this is one of the Top 5 greatest compilation albums ever assembled together by anyone. In my opinion, if you want to listen to all of THE BEE GEES greatest hits, get this collection, you will listen for yourself how far THE BEE GEES have come a long way and matured with time and age. Their music only improved and kept getting better as time rolled on as this collection will definitely attest to that.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary compilation album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished by everyone for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one BEE GEES compilation album that all devout music collector's will not want to be without. However, there are other greatest hits packages by this artist that you might want to research further into and purchase other than or besides this compilation album.

In closing, there are more than 500 cover versions of Gibb songs that have been recorded by other artists. THE BEE GEES would continue to record great albums and release outstanding hit songs throughout their whole glorious career. THE BEE GEES would also play to pack houses with their sold out concerts the world over for many years. With this in mind, all was well in THE BEE GEES world until the unthinkable happened. With the untimely passing of original BEE GEE co-founder and beloved brother Maurice Gibb, THE BEE GEES would lose a very important key role and element in THE BEE GEES sound and music. Listening to their music, it is also very apparent to me that THE BEE GEES music did matter and truly made a difference in my life as well as many other people's lives. In reality, THE BEE GEES will forever live in my heart as those three talented brothers that gave us everything they had and revolutionized the sound of Disco and Rock n' Roll forever in the process. With that, THE BEE GEES will forever leave their mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you Barry, Robin and the late great Maurice. Thanks for the wonderful memories. Had this when it came out on LP--didn't even know it was ON cd til just now, and I ordered it. Take it for what it is, a timepiece from the period. The Bee Gees in the mid to late 70's were as dominant as the Beatles were in the 60's. PS- CHICAGO was offered the "Got To Get You" song and passed.

Yes, I'm a HUGE fan of Peter Frampton and the Brothers Gibb and I'm an even BIGGER fan of cheesy films. I've been hunting down this soundtrack on CD since wearing out the VHS I checked out from the library. After having the DVD fall on my foot at my local Walgreen's (and watching it 7 times over 3 days), I'm now starting my search again for the awesome soundtrack. I'm a bit miffed that the tracks are out of order, but it's no big deal. If you love Frampton's guitar work, the BeeGee's vocals, and a cheesy film from '78 to boot, then by all means, get it. For those haters that don't like disco-fied Beatles covers, well, all I can say to them is pfft (oh, and not buy it if they're going to just fuss and cuss about how it's not 'right').

Looking at the previous review I wonder...Did you see the movie? if you did then you heard all the tracks before buying the cd. Yes the movie was corny and campy...and I'm glad it didn't turn out to be like Xanadu (largly due to the fact that no one had to act, they just sang the parts) but it still leads me to wonder why would you buy the soundtrack to a movie you felt like was a flop? I enjoyed the music therefore I will most likely buy this cd. I enjoyed the movie as well (sucker for the Bee Gees)...

I admit I was one of those people who thought The Bee Gees came and went with disco. Naturally the brothers didn't, and the 1983 soundtrack Staying Alive is proof they still had their touch, whether the populous was ready to admit it or not.

Only six songs from the soundtrack are penned by the boys, and you'll have to forgive me for skipping over the other six songs by Frank Stallone, Cynthia Rhodes, and Tommy Faragher. (The last guy I don't even know who he is!) I don't care, I don't think you care. The movie is guilty pleasure cheese directed by Sly Stallone. Enough on that, let's move on.

I downloaded a few of these songs, and then I found the soundtrack on cassette. Oddly enough, the day I started this review I snagged the LP! Both formats present The Gibb tunes on Side A and the rest on Side B. The Woman In You leads off with a harsh edge to it. It's well put together but it doesn't sound like The Bee Gees from Living Eyes. Perhaps a tad too far in the rough and tumble direction.

I Love You Too Much, however, has that easy eighties vibe too it. It has some great lyrics and a recognizable Gibb sound. This might be the best song here. Lyrical balladry with a speedy track of music. The lyric of `under me is where you should be' then turned around as `under you is where I should be' symbolizes this either way style. Good stuff!
Breakout returns to this odd and rough vibe. The music overtakes Barry's vocals, which I think are about the same old surviving the city et al, but the lyrics and lack of harmony here are a miss.

Although this soundtrack didn't do as well as Fever for a number of reasons, one naturally being the song quality is a tad lower, but also, the movie and the music aren't as perfectly matched. Can anyone tell me where Someone Belonging To Someone is in the film? Granted It's been awhile, but the song is at least on par with How Deep Is Your Love, yet this ballad does not stick in my mind the way the How Deep sequence from Fever does. Someone's got a great hook and a sweet blended vocal sound to it and is worthy of much more than its second rate obscurity.
Life Goes On makes it into the plus column, and not just to give the album a split vote either, ;0) It's not comparable to More Than A Woman in quality, but similiar in style. The easy dance song with some good lyrics. Lyrics and Harmony that you can always hear and understand is a good thing.

And naturally we come to Staying Alive. I must admit this is a very symbolic and penne ultimate song that represents so much, that must be why it's been played to death! This is the one memorable part of the film, at the end where Travolta says he's feels like 'strutting' and does so into the credits. The song definitely has its place, and has indeed immortalized The Brothers Gibb. Just over and over I can't take all that clichéd Ah Ah Hah Hah Staying Alive Staying Alive. ARGH! People have come to think this is all The Bee Gees are about, and that is wrong.
Their contribution to this soundtrack may not exactly show why the Brothers are in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but its an integral part in the transition of the boys' move from Fever to producing for others, working solo, and progressing themselves. An easy find to complete your collection.

I watched this film for the first time in the early 80s. I still can remember all the songs and music performed by BeeGees and other artists featured in the film. I don't know why I did not buy the album back then. Curiously, the soundtrack seemed to disappear from the surface of the world ever since. I looked everywhere in Taiwan, and then in England when I worked there. But I did not find it in all the shops I visited. At long last, eureka! it's right here on the Amazon site. I am so happy to be able to order this soundtrack from Amazon. And I am looking forward to receiving it and enjoying the songs that have made this film so memorable. I can hardly wait for the beautiful and romantic scenes to come up in my mind when I play the CD and listen to the lovely songs again, following Laura and Tony's footsteps in the Central Park, in the musical "Satan's Alley".....P.S. This soundtrick is a must for all BeeGees fans, for I don't think you will find the 5 BeeGees songs featured in this soundtrack in other BeeGees albums.

I was a fan of the Bee Gees until "Saturday Night Fever" and the era of disco. For a long time after disco became a footnote in music history I refuse to listen to the Bee Gees because of their association with disco; my mistake. The Bee Gees were one of the most successful and creative pop groups in music history. Even if the Bee Gees were less successful in the United States, they are almost assuredly one of the best selling pop groups in history world wide. This collection has some shortcomings, but it is a great selection of songs for a casual fan. The bonus DVD is an excellent extra that may drive you to get a more comprehensive DVD.

These songs were #1 somewhere in the world. Unfortunately, the booklet included with the CD fails to point out where the songs were #1. Many were not #1 in the United States or the United Kingdom, so I have to wonder whether Djibouti, Nepal, or Costa Rica was the pop hotbed where some songs went to #1. Regardless of where the songs went to #1, every one of these songs is excellent. The only problem may be that there are not enough of them; more on that in a moment.

Because the Bee Gees had hits from the 60s to the 90s, every era of their career is represented by the first eighteen songs on the CD. The 19th song on the CD, "Man in the Middle," is not a number one song, but a tribute to departed brother Maurice Gibb. The song is moving and very well done. I think Maurice Gibb would have been proud of his brothers.

I enjoyed the Bee Gees in the era of songs like "Massachusetts," "I've Gotta Get a Message to You," and "I Started a Joke." When the Bee Gees disappeared and "I Started a Joke" disappeared from radio I kept trying to remember who the group was that sang that song.

Though the Bee Gees had outstanding harmonies and catchy pop riffs in the music in the first portion of their career, it was the catchier beats of the disco era that propelled the Bee Gees into superstardom. Songs like "Jive Talkin'" and "You Should Be Dancing" led to the songs of "Saturday Night Fever." From the end of 1977 into 1978 the Gibb brothers had six songs that went to number one in the United States. Brother Andy Gibb recorded two of the six songs and Yvonne Elliman went to number one with "If I Can't Have You." The Bee Gees followed up with the successful album "Spirits Have Flown," which provided three more number ones to the Bee Gees. However, the fall of disco in 1979 generated a backlash in the United States that propelled the Bee Gees from the limelight to the back stage. Fortunately the brothers continued to chart well in the rest of the world.

Perhaps the real flaw with this collection is depth. The Bee Gees have sold more than 180 million albums world wide. The have more than 20 released albums. Even presuming that the nineteen songs on the CD are number one songs, an incredible number of very good songs remain that hit the top ten, the top twenty or the top forty. There are at least two more comprehensive collections available. There is a two disk greatest hits collection and a boxed set with many more songs available. If you already have most of the Bee Gees music this set only gives you a different set to listen to, in addition to the Maurice Gibb tribute song "Man in the Middle." Of course, the more comprehensive collections also tend to be more expensive.

This particular CD also includes a DVD with five performances. I enjoyed the performances immensely. All five performances are live versions of songs represented on the CD. The five performances represent the Bee Gees from their two most popular periods. While the CD alone could have been more comprehensive, the inclusion of the DVD makes this collection very cost-effective if you are looking for a CD representative of the Bee Gees. I warn you that you may become hooked on the Bee Gees and may want to start collecting more, and more, of their music. Enjoy!

If one were to assess musical artists in the Pop music era, one may not be off-base by saying that the Bee Gees are one of the Top 10 acts of all time. The Bee Gees established themselves as pop stars in the late 1960s; reinvented themselves in the 1970s as pioneers for the "Disco Era"; became acclaimed songwriters for some of pop's biggest acts in the 1980s; and then successfully made a comeback in the 1990s. This has allowed the Bee Gees to establish a large body of music work throughout their careers. "Bee Gees: Number Ones" marks the first release following the death of Bee Gee Maurice Gibb. It contains 18 hit singles by the Bee Gees spanning their entire career. While "Number Ones" does a good job at providing a snapshot of the Bee Gees career, it is not the strongest greatest hits collection that is available of their work.

The title of "Number Ones: is misleading. The term "Number Ones" is used loosely. In the liner notes, it says that this collection "contains the best-loved number one singles plus classic songs taken from number one albums". The liner notes also mention that "no other band has scored number ones in each of five decades (the argument can be made the Bee Gees had a #1 single or album in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, but I'm still trying to figure out what the fifth decade is). As for the number one singles or albums, the Bee Gees are referring to anywhere in the world where they scored a #1. An example of this is "You Win Again". "You Win Again" was a commercial flop in the United States, but scored as a number one in Europe. It's clear that the album is stretching things as far as what is a "Number One", but one thing is clear - this album contains plenty of hits.

With greatest hits collections, I prefer the songs to be arranged chronologically on the collection. This allows me to see how the artist has progressed over time. Given the fact that the Bee Gees transformed from a 60s Rock Sound to a Disco sound - and eventually to an adult-contemporary sound - it is critical for any Bee Gees collection to be arranged chronologically. "Number Ones" does a very good job at showing this - all of the songs are ordered chronologically and allow the listener to follow hear the transformations made in their career. The collection does a nice job at introducing "forgotten hits" by the Bee Gees such as ""World", "Words", "I've Gotta Get a Message to You", and "Don't Forget to Remember".

As with many greatest hits collections, this one includes a "new song". In this case the "new song" is a moving tribute to the late Maurice Gibb entitled "Man in the Middle". For the most part this song continues the adult-contemporary sound started by the Bee Gees in the 1990s.

Overall there are no problems with the musical content of "Number Ones". However, "Number Ones" falls short when considering this greatest hits collection against several other significant greatest hits collections by the Bee Gees:

"Best of the Bee Gees" is a greatest hits album that covers the early material of the Bee Gees from the 1960s. The songs from this era "Massachusetts", "World", "Words", and "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" are all included here. This album also contains "To Love Somebody" and "New York Mining Disaster" - not included on "Number Ones".

"Best of the Bee Gees Vol. 2" is a follow-on greatest hits album that focuses on the Bee Gees material in the early 1970s - prior to the release of "Main Course" which would mark their transformation into the Disco-based pioneers. Included songs are: "Lonely Days", "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", and "Don't Forget to Remember".

"Bee Gees Greatest": This collection focuses on the Bee Gees material from their "peak period" - 1975 through 1979. All of the songs from "Number Ones" from this time frame are on this CD.

"The Very Best of the Bee Gees" is a mid 90s greatest hits collection with some overlap to "Number Ones". It contains 21 tracks and includes the newer song "Ordinary Lives". It also includes "New York Mining Disaster", "First of May", "Saved by the Bell", "Run to Me", "Nights on Broadway", and "More than a Woman" - all not included on "Number Ones". Songs like "I've Started a Joke", "Lonely Days", "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", "Love So Right", and "Love You Inside Out" are not included on this collection.

"Love Songs" is a greatest hits collection by the Bee Gees focused on ballads and songs with a theme of love.

"The Bee Gees: Their Greatest Hits" is a two disc collection. It is a comprehensive collection that contains every song on "Number Ones" with the exception of the Maurice Gibb tribute.

"Tales From the Brothers Gibb" is the most comprehensive Bee Gees collection out there. It is a four CD boxed set collection. All songs from "Number Ones" are included on this collection with the exception of the Maurice Gibb tribute.

This edition of "Number Ones" contains a bonus DVD featuring five songs performed on a television show. These songs clearly don't have the intensity of many of the live performances the Bee Gees have - namely "One Night Only". However if you are a Bee Gees fan, you may appreciate these videos.

Based on more focused and comprehensive greatest hits offerings available, "Number Ones" really doesn't stand up with many of the other Bee Gees collections out there. In addition, I didn't feel the DVD video added much making this collection worthwhile. Unless you are a fan and/or want the Maurice Gibb tribute song, my advice would be to try to get the two-disc "The Bee Gees: Their Greatest Hits" instead of this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Too Many #1 Hits Already!.......2005-12-21

Not to be excluded from the list of other artists that have released compilations containing only #1 songs, the Bee Gees have no worries. Although some of the hits didn't actually make #1 in the UK or the USA, some may have been #1 in several other countries, prompting it to be thankfully included here. "Number Ones" features 19-tracks, adding cuts such as the country flavored "Don't Forget To Remember" (#34 in USA/#2 in UK) and the immortal "Words" (#15 USA/#8 UK). Although the Bee Gees never had these few songs at #1, other artists have consistently placed these songs at the top of the charts.

The last song is 2001's "Man in the Middle," a polite MOR rocker that is included as a tribute to the late Maurice Gibb. An 'after the fact' trivia is that this song actually went to #2 in Turkey after this album was released!

If you buy this early, you'll get the limited-edition CD/DVD combo which includes rare footage of the Bee Gees performing "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," "How Deep Is Your Love," "Jive Talkin'," "Massachusetts" and "I Started a Joke" (from the U.K. TV show "An Audience With").

Trivia: Dozens of songs went to #1 in Holland, Germany and Italy and elsewhere. Here are some well-known and rare Gibb songs that have made it to #1.

I was lucky enought to stumble on this CD and WOW it is fantastic. I'd forgotten what great songs the BeeGees put out. My teen years floated though my mind as I enjoyed listening to these songs over and over. I especially enjoyed "Man in the Middle" the tribute to brother Maurice Gibb. Great album!

Did the Bee Gees get too big too fast on their second run at fame? This compilation suggests the answer is yes; their early self-reinvention as a disco-soul act yielded fabulous singles like "Jive Talkin'" and the unstoppable Saturday Night Fever trilogy of "How Deep Is Your Love," "Stayin' Alive," and "Night Fever," but by the end of the '70s the inspiration was gone. Bland follow-ups like "Too Much Heaven" and "Love You Inside Out" are at a minimum here, though, making Greatest for the most part an honorable alternative to the SNF soundtrack, should you want one. --Rickey Wright

The title "Greatest" is a bit misleading since the focus here is the Brothers Gibb's biggest hits during their oft maligned disco era on the RSO label, from 1975's "Jive Talkin" (the leadoff track) to 1979's "Love You Inside Out." There's nothing here from the earlier phase of their career on the Atco label or that post-dates 1979, and only a handful that showcases great album tracks not released as singles like "You Stepped Into My Life," "Wind of Change" and "Children of the World." While the Bee Gees didn't invent disco they certainly were one of its leading proponents and "Greatest" oddly excises two tracks that were Top 40 hits during this era like 1977's "Boogie Child" and "Edge of the Universe." But the big disco hits are all here in all their ear-shattering falsettoed glory. It's easy to stereotype what's here as vapid mindless disco, but if you look deeper "Greatest" showcases some of songwriting's greatest hooks. If you're looking to get your disco on "Greatest" is a great place to start.

I sincerely believe that The Bee Gees were one of the most under-rated bands in popular music history! In my mind, "the three B's" of rock and roll are The Beatles, The Beach Boys and the Bee Gees. They were all incredibly talented bands!

I have followed The Bee Gees musical career since 1967 when I first heard them in college. Why haven't they had greater success and popularity in the U.S.? They have achieved much greater fame in the rest of the world. Could it be because of Maurice's falsetto voice and breathtaking range? We may never know.

This album, if you can find it, represents the best of their golden years, 1975-1979. They were the pioneers of disco, blending their distinctive vocal harmony with smooth and brilliant instrumental sounds.

I was very fortunate to find this collection on vinyl at a second hand music store a few years ago and consider it one of my favorite pop albums. If you enjoy dancing to disco or just want to hear one of the best bands ever...get this album!

This is awesome music - the best anti depressant and bad mood buster available. You can not listen to the Bee Gees and not be thrust into a good mood. My favorite time to listen is when I'm cleaning the house. I hate cleaning but the time flies when I'm listening to the Bee Gees. It's also great for dancing in the kitchen with my lover on a Saturday night when we can't find a baby sitter.

Without a doubt, the late 1970s were the shining times for the Bee Gees. Their music from 1975-1979 is sweet, timeless, and unforgettable. This 20-song collection is all the casual listener needs, featuring their biggest chart-toppers (Night Fever, Stayin' Alive) and songs the brothers wrote but let other fellow musicians take them to the top (If I Can't Have You, More than a Woman). Essential at best, and highly enjoyable.

"One Night Only" is a good a masterpiece of live recording as 1977's "Here At Last...Bee Gees...Live" was. All the great songs are here, plus a few odd album cuts that truly make this set shine. Highlights include, "Grease" with a thunderous crowd roaring approval; "(Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away', a true tearjerker with prerecorded Andy Gibb singing with his brothers and "Immortality", with a wonderful Celine Dion backed by the brothers. The CD is crisp, clean and clear. It is amazing to hear such fantastic producers who's studio recordings sound the same in concert. This is a classic CD!

The previous reviews we read before getting this production fell short to what we got...not only a flashback to our 'Saturday Night Fever' times but also the lasting impression it has left in our 11-yr old kid. He has managed to learn & sing all the selections, particularly "Words", "Lonely Days" and the "New York Mining Disaster". Absolutely EXTRAORDINARY!

Are there such beings as Bee Gees afficionados? Whether the answer is yes or no, given all the hits these guys had over the decades, it's ridiculous to nitpick over which songs attained which rankings. To me, the point is fond memories, not re-creating the Billboard charts, and this CD and DVD set succeeds brilliantly at that.

Songs on the CD are a nice combination of 1960s classics like "I Started a Joke," "I've Gotta Get a Message to You," and "Massachusetts" with the '70s dance songs "Stayin' Alive," "Night Fever," and "You Should be Dancing," plus a few from the '80s. Is this the "ultimate" collection? That depends on which Bee Gees songs you like most. To me, these do nicely.

The Bonus DVD is short and a little overly staged for my taste -- it's the boys performing 5 songs live in an English TV studio that reminds me more of the old Dinah Shore Show than a real concert. It's not that the footage is old...it's not...it just looks a little small time for such a world-renowned act. Maybe they were just going for "intimate." In any case, they look and sound good, and it's nice to see them all live without committing a whole evening.

Overall, it's a good collection of 19 pop songs that formed part of the soundtrack to my early teen years. And, especially with the extra DVD, there are far worse ways to spend $13.

It's another year, and therefore there must be another Bee Gees compilation. Just in time for the 2005 Christmas shopping season brought us "Love Songs". Earlier in the year, this release was issued, without much fanfare. As to the claim of all songs being "numnber ones", the liner notes state that all songs made No. 1 somewhere around the world, or were on an album that made No. 1 somwhere around the world, but other than that there are no further details, and we just have to take the label's word for it...

"Number Ones" (19 tracks, 73 min.) brings a chronological selection of the songs. The first third of the collection brings the 1960s songs that, if anything, have gotten better with the years. "World", "Words", "I Started a Joke" etc. have that instant classic feel, and are the best songs on here. After that we get a couple songs of the transition phase of the early 70s, before diving full head into the Bee Gees' most successfull period 1975-1979 centered around the "Saturday Night Fever" songs. The songs are a soundtrack to the era, but for me personally I prefer the 60s Bee Gees. Only one song on the compilation comes from after 1979, the likeable "You Win Again". The album closes with the 2001 Maurice Gibb tribute track, "Man in the Middle", which is touching but musically unremarkable. This limited edition also comes with a 5 song live DVD, which includes an outstanding version of "Massachusetts".

You cannot call this a "greatest hits" album. For that, too many essential songs such as "New York Mining Disaster 1941", "Nights on Broadway", and "More Than a Woman" are missing. While "Number Ones" certainly contains a lot of great music, the better Bee Gees compilation is the 2001 2CD album "Their Greatest Hits: The Record".

I couldn't possibly put it any better than Pisati Giamarco "Old fashioned man" who brought a tear to my eye with his moving tribute to the Bee Gees greatest hits collection. "LISTENING OUR MUSIC MY HEART FLIES OVER THE MOUNTAIN, SWIMS IN THE DEEP OF THE OCEAN, DREAMING LOVE IS ALL AROUND". Beautiful.

The Bee Gees have written some of pop music's greatest love songs--songs covered by innumerable artists throughout the years. But now, for the first time, the Bee Gees' original recordings of those love songs have been brought together on one album. Love Songs features 18 newly remastered romantic hits spanning 1967 to 2001 from the best-selling vocal group of all-time. The trio's contributions to 1977's Saturday Night Fever helped make history when that soundtrack became music's top-selling album (15 times platinum, certified Diamond, still the biggest selling soundtrack ever). Its gold #1 Grammy-winning "How Deep Is Your Love" ranked in the Top 10 for 17 straight weeks, setting a Billboard record. "More Than a Woman" was also heard on that landmark album. "Emotion," a 1978 hit for Samantha Sang, was performed by the Bees Gees for 2001's retrospective-plus The Record before Destiny's Child took it Top 10. In 1979, Spirits Having Flown spun off the platinum #1 "Too Much Heaven." "Heartbreaker" was first heard sung by Dionne Warwick in 1982 but was later recorded by the Bee Gees for The Record, as was "Islands in the Stream, which in 1983 went #1 Country/#1 pop for Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, and is included here as a live version. Culled from the Bee Gees' four final studio albums are "Secret Love" (1991's High Civilization), the Adult Contemporary Top 40 hit "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (1993's Size Isn't Everything), "Closer Than Close" and "I Could Not Love You More" (both from 1997's Still Waters), and "Wedding Day" (2001's This Is Where I Came In). There have been dozens of "love songs" collections released. I have several of these and plan to buy more. These collections are usually all or nearly all songs that have been previously released, which means that some fans may be thinking "What! ANOTHER collection?" However, I enjoy these collections because I enjoy the love songs of these artists and hearing them together is often fun.

This collection contains 18 songs released in the 34 years from 1967 to 2001. Many of these songs are often played on easy listening and classic rock stations. Ten of the 18 songs were released as singles, but several of the songs that were not singles occasionally get airplay. Several of the singles went to #1. "Lonely Days," "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," "How Deep Is Your Love," and "Too Much Heaven" were all Bee Gees chart toppers. "Islands in the Stream" was a #1 hit for Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. The version on this collection was sung live by the Bee Gees.

Even those songs that were not chart toppers will hold you in their embrace. "Emotion" contains as much emotional power as any Bee Gees' song. "Heartbreaker" is another winner, from the 2001 album "The Record." "Closer than Close" is a mellow love song from the 1997 album "Still Waters" that is captivating. "I Could not Love You More," also from "Still Waters," has wonderful harmonies that were always the trade mark of the Brothers Gibb.

The Bee Gees became the joke of a generation when disco music fell from favor. However, the Bee Gees were masters of their art, and their music is beautiful. The Bee Gees were especially good at singing love songs, as this collection shows. If you seek another "Love Songs" collection, this one is excellent. If you would like to have a collection of Bee Gees love songs, this one is first rate. As a casual fan of the Bee Gees, I am very impressed by this collection and recommend it for fans of the Bee Gees and lovers everywhere. Enjoy!

Well now I have only the Living Eyes cd to get from the Bee Gees, the hardest one to find. I bought this cd online as it was hard to find in stores, and idiotically didn't pay attention and got the one with the bonus track You Win Again, instead of the import, Wing And A Prayer. Although that song is one of their best, I have it on E-S-P, and feel stupid. So be careful. But ANYWAY, the rest of the album is great, although almost every song is a sad song. Probably because their younger brother Andy passed away right before the making of it. From all the hundreds of released and unreleased bootleg versions of Bee Gees songs I know, Ordinary Lives is my favorite. I first heard it on the One For All Tour concert on VHS, and loved it instantly. It's quite a simple song, but it's incredible. I also love Bodyguard, an incredible and memorably sad song. The other standout song for me is Wish You Were Here, the song I think was made in memory of Andy. Tokyo Nights is quite different, but also lovely. It's My Neighborhood sounds like an attempt of late 80's pop/ rap music or something, but is also pretty good. I also love Maurice's House Of Shame. The U.S. single One sounds great recorded live, but is somewhat not as good in the studio version. Tears is another outstanding, yet very sad, beautiful ballad. I love the end of the chorus in it. Will You Ever Let Me is probably the only "boring" song on here, and definitely most different. 5 star album. And following it, was an even better one, High Civilisation.

I have the original US version of this CD that was issued by Warner Brothers in 1989. The version being sold here by Amazon is an Import, since the US version is out of print. There are 2 differences between my CD and the one listed here:

#1: Track 1 and Track 2 are reversed. My CD starts with "One" and then goes on to "Ordinary Lives", the reverse of how they are listed here.

#2: Track #11 on this CD is a song called "Wing and a Prayer", my CD has "You Win Again". "You Win Again" was a track off of their 1987 CD, "ESP", and it was a hit all over Europe, but it failed to chart here in the US. I assume Warner Brothers included that song on this CD hoping that if the CD took off, they would give that song a 2nd chance as a hit here in the US.

Some of the other reviewers have referred to this CD as being heavy and sad as a result of brother Andy's passing in 1988. I disagree. While the CD does contain some touching moments (namely "Wish You Were Here"), it also contains some of the most catchy, up-beat numbers that they had done in years.

The Bee Gees as a group had not had a Top 10 hit here in America since "Love You Inside Out" in 1979. 1989 was the year that saw many chart veterans stage impressive comebacks. Besides the Bee Gees, other acts that returned to the Top 10 in 1989 after being away for several years included Donny Osmond, Bette Midler, Donna Summer, Alice Cooper and the Doobie Brothers.

The Bee Gees rode that wave of veteran chart resurgence with the lively "One". It certainly deserved to be a Top 10 hit, and in my opinion, should have gone all the way to #1. The 2nd release, "Bodyguard", was one of the brothers lush ballads. It failed to make the Hot 100, although it did receive a lot of airplay on AC stations.

The rocking, uptempo numbers on this CD include the following: "One", "Oridnary Lives", "It's my Neighborhood", "Tokyo Nights", "Flesh and Blood", "House of Shame", and "Will You Ever Let Me". I can't comment on "Wing and a Prayer" since it is not on my CD. But that is 7 out of 11 tracks being uptempo, and only 2 ballads: "Tears" and "Wish You Were Here".

I was 21 when this CD came out, and I was out having a lot of fun that summer. The fact that so many of my favortie artists were back on the charts made that summer even more memorable. When I listen to this CD, it certainly does not put me in a somber mood. It makes me think of the fun I had and my excitement at hearing the Bee Gees music back on the radio. If you want to hear a Bee Gees CD full of somber music, check out "Still Waters". That CD is good, but there is not one up-beat song on the entire CD.

If you love the Bee Gees, you will love this CD. I am sure the import is as good as the US version, even though it does not include "You Win Again". I'm a bit jealous, because those of you who own the import have heard "Wing and a Prayer", but I have never gotten to hear it.

Any Gibber can't help but think about the boys' concert antics for this 1989 release. This album came at an interesting time. Andy Gibb died the year before, Hurricane Andrew devastated Florida, and The Brothers Gibb were relegated to doing concerts on The Disney Channel. The music helped the boys cope with the difficult circumstances, and One was a modest and critical success.

As usual, The US has a slightly different perception of anything Gibb, but the first single Ordinary Lives was a hit in the rest of the world. There's a very cool refrain here and a distinct beat. Sometimes the song is listed with the title Cruel World in parenthesis, and its neat to hear Barry utter the words in the song. One was a monster hit with all the hooks one could ask for. The boys do their little One! salutes in concert, and my nieces are just obsessed with watching it over and over. One is so tropical catchy and has great lyrics with cool rifts.

Onto what may be one of the steamier Gibb songs, Bodyguard was very naughty when it was released with a soft core music video. Robin's delivery is on form, and the words are the ones every woman wants to hear. Growl! You deserve more, let me take care and protect you. Hot damn.

Its My Neighborhood is the first departure song on One. It's got that eighties hard edge to it that doesn't always suit the boys. I do like the chorus and the lyrics do have the proper element of bad boy anger. Not the same kind of growl! as Bodyguard, but a growl! nonetheless.

Tears is so real. I am not a major teary eyed type of person, but Tears is just the perfect song for when you need a good cry. Three grown men admit as fact `there will be tears tonight'. It's okay to cry, who knew? Barry's delivery and lyrics of not being ashamed about it just set this kleenex keeper off.

It's unusual in the eighties to see a Bee Gees song written by only a pair of brothers, as opposed to solo material where any combination of the brothers and their teams are expected. With Tokyo Nights, however, Robin and Maurice make a very catchy tongue in cheek song. It's a bit of a tribute to the stalwart Japanese Gibb fans, yet I suspect something more sinister in its ambiguous lyrics. The guests in my car just don't understand when I sing along to this one.

Flesh and Blood might be the better Robin song on this album. Bodyguard is partly shared with Barry, as is the rest of the album Baz dominated. Flesh and Blood is in this hard style the album seems to be going for, and this suits Robin. It's similar to Walls Have Eyes, and perhaps that album would have been as stylized as Blood had it had full blown Gibb production. The nuances here and the delivery are top notch.

I recently discovered a cute little opening effect on Wish You Were Here that I hadn't noticed until my headphones-only listen. It's like a carousel that turns into a lofty echo. Barry, Robin, and Maurice wrote this song in tribute to Andy, and it is a tearjerker with totally real lyrics. It's bittersweet. There are very happy, fond, `wish you well' type sayings mixed in with `don't go we'll miss you' somberness. The perfect reflection of loss in a song.

Yay we come to the Maurice moment of the album! House Of Shame is as usual per Maurice, in a slightly different style than anything else on One. Even the edgy modern stuff isn't quite like Mo's hooky lines here. His delivery varies on the verses, and then he drops a killer chorus on you that I often find stuck in my head even if I haven't heard Shame in ages. Good stuff.

Sometimes this trying to be Prince stuff is just to much, and Will You Ever Let Me is almost a bland imitation. It has its moments, is it me or are all the choruses strong here? A song that I would probably write off if it were anyone else, and The Brothers delivery and hooks still bring me back.

Wing and A Prayer doesn't sound like anything old fashioned, yet it reminds me of that old time song about `coming in on a wing and a prayer.' (I am then also remind of `Don't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but me!' but that's another story.) The Gibb tune here is a bit uneven. I really like the slower parts and Barry's breathy speaking lines, but then the song can turn to the rough stuff and it doesn't all seem to fit. Still One starts and ends on an upbeat note, and any new fans will be surprised to find the depth and seriousness in between.

Special note #4356. Shape of Things to Come is another one of these Gibb oddities that fans are forced to hunt for. Released by Arista for their Olympic album, the song received little notice. No Gibb collection, however, is complete without it, or One for that matter. The album is a unique look at three successful men and brothers, coping, crying, moving on and making music to boot.

One is the best number to describe this album. The Bee Gees lost their younger brother, Andy, had been very painful, but they didn't give up. In the song Wish You Were Here, you can hear the heart-touching melody.
One, the title song, was the best song ever written. It's very hard to sing, but Barry manage to get over it. Ordinary Lives' chorus is short, but indeed its very good.
Bodygard and It's My Neighborhood has the song of sweet jazz and hard rock. Flesh and Blood showed their great harmony of three.
This album surely show the strength of the Bee Gees.

In 1987, when the Bee Gees made a comeback after a long hiatus with the "E.S.P" album, the comeback was considered a failure because of poor album sales in the United States. The results were better overseas for E.S.P. During the "E.S.P" album, the Bee Gees had long shed their "Saturday Night Fever - Disco Days" and kept up with the changing music times by producing a solid adult contemporary album. The Bee Gees deserve a lot of credit for being able to keep up with the times. In a lot of ways, "One" continues the musical path that the Bee Gees did with "E.S.P", by continuing the adult contemporary direction. "One" was released in 1989 and had much better results including a Top 10 single - the title song "One".

This album marked was the first Bee Gees album since the death of their brother Andy Gibb in 1988. There was a lot of talk of Andy joining his three brothers in the group and on this particular album. Andy's death does play a role on this album. There are several songs that no doubt are reflections of some of the pain that Barry, Robin, and Maurice feel for their brother. This is by no means a somber collection of songs, but the specter of Andy is clearly seen on here. At first the song "Tears" seemed like a song about a lost love, but after listening to the lyrics, I get the impression this is spun more as a tribute to Andy with such lines as "Heaven only knows how much I'm missing you", "You're Still Inside and I'm Not Ashamed", and "I Can't Forget Your Face, I Call Your Name". Another song that is a reminder of Andy is "Wish You Were Here". Once again, although this is a song about a lost love there are lines like "Drying these tears I cry, They Were Good Times". Sometimes a tragedy does have a way of inspiring creativity in music and I think this happens here because these are two very good songs by the Bee Gees.

There is one song that has a Saturday Night Fever theme to it and that is "It's My Neighborhood". This is definitely the best song on the album. This has a very catchy 'street like' theme to it. Although its not a Disco song, it does have a feel to the Tony Manero days in Brooklyn. Others must have thought so as well - because this song would be included in the Broadway version of Saturday Night Fever about 7 years later. The Bee Gees went back to some roots here and created a great song that kept up with the times. Another song that keeps up with the times is "Bodyguard". In this song, it has a more of an R&B feel to it and when you hear the intro notes you might actually think it is an R&B song. "Ordinary Lives" shows the Bee Gees remain creative as ever when there is some spoken words in the song that go "We were Ordinary People Living Ordinary Lives" and "The clock on the wall keeps moving. Time Stands Still. No Matter How the Dice May Roll. Someone else always gets to Call the Number". These spoken words (which I believe is spoken by Barry Gibb) adds a nice dimension to this song. "One" is a nice song, but actually one of the weaker tracks. Finally "Tokyo Nights" is another nice song with a slight "asian like" that really is in sync with the theme of the song.

When a lot of people think of the Bee Gees, they immediately think of the Barry Gibb falsetto vocals - and in general Barry's vocals. On this album, Robin Gibb really gets some good opportunities for lead vocals and shows he is a fine vocalist. Robin plays as key a role as Barry does on this album. In fact, Barry does a nice job supporting Robin on many songs. Robin shines on the song "Bodyguard".

I have the version of this CD that was released in the United States. They decided to include the track "You Win Again" from E.S.P. instead of the track "Wing and a Prayer". This was probably to because "You Win Again" did so well in Europe and overseas. They probably tried to give the song another shot in the U.S., so it payed to put it on the CD. Regardless of what CD, "You Win Again" is a great song. To me, on the E.S.P album (which I feel is a good album), it makes a strong statement that the Bee Gees are back and make good music. It has a wonderful mix of percussion and mantra vocals - plus some nice harmonies between Barry and Robin.

As for the liner notes - on my CD, all of the lyrics are included. There are production credits as well. There is no tribute or statement to Andy - and that did surprise me. If you are Bee Gees fan, the songs on this collection aren't the most catchy songs as on previous albums - but these are good songs. The Bee Gees prepared well for this album and it paid off. I'd recommend getting this collection.
