Every once in awhile I come across a CD that absolutely blows me away. ..T best CD of the year!

Product Description
As lead singer for alternative rock band LIFT, Atlanta resident Molly Bancroft was the chick with the electric guitar and riot grrrl attitude. So, imagine her fans' surprise when she released her solo debut compact disc, Get Closer, with its mélange of ambient-trance, pop, jazz and folk with a decidedly European feel.

Bancroft said that while preparing to write the material for Get Closer, she immersed herself in the sounds of UK favorites like Everything but the Girl, Chicane, Beth Orton, and Underworld. Then she brought it Sheryl Crow's bassist Tim Smith and Tender Idols drummer Guy Strauss to polish off the disc. She played all the other instruments herself, including piano, loops and drum machines.

The result is a sound like no other currently on Atlanta's music scene but Bancroft said the new direction is not really a surprise to her. America's late '90's flirtation with Britpop and trance may have never caught fire with the mainstream, but Bancroft has taken that music's energy and merged it with such classic sounds as those created by pioneers like Kate Bush to create her own groove.

5 out of 5 stars Last of the great singers..........2007-05-14

It scares me to think that there fewer and fewer great singers. Ronstadts choice in music was able to make one tap their feet or sing the blues. With Get Closer, there was a chance to punk out a bit. Yet all the elements of past elements were available on this album. As she showed in the future, she can sing just about anything.
At this point of the music business, I am still looking for an artist that can sing live nearly as well as on the CD. I can tell if they are lip synching or singing live (Simpson sisters). I am hungering for true artists like Linda Ronstadt. I revisit her music often, now replacing my cassettes with Cd's. This one is a great, sometimes overlooked example of a great set of songs and a tried and true singer!

AFTER THE ROCK ORIENTED MAD LOVE ALBUM, RONSTADT MADE GET CLOSER EASILY ENJOYABLE. EVERY SONG LOOKS LIKE HAVE SOMETHING OF THE BEST POP MUSIC OF ALL TIMES. I REALLY LOVE "EASY FOR YOU TO SAY". SHE'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE FEMALE SINGERS EVER.

I owned this on cassette years ago and loved it then----remastering does it true justice. It is, admittedly, an unbalanced collection of songs. Yet, this album showcases Linda's wide range and tastes like no other she has ever released. "Get Closer" and "I Knew You When" are sung with classic Ronstadt attitude while "Mendocino" and "Mr. Radio" display her less brassy, reflective side. In "Easy For You To Say", my favorite Linda Ronstadt song of all time, she nails the bittersweet verse of a burned lover brilliantly by keeping the tone dark nevertheless resolved.

This is another Linda Ronstsdt classic that I am re-discovering in CD form, ( I still have the album ) and it still knocks my socks off! I could listen to this one all day and still want more. As each song played, I sang along to them like I did when I first bought the album years ago. I remembered each word like I had just heard the album yesterday. How it breaks my heart to think how long I have gone without this music. Learn from my mistakes and buy this one again in CD form, and hold on to your socks. Thank you Linda.

I love this album. It came out at a time when new wave was becoming popular and Linda Ronstadt was a great artist of the 70's . She's at her usual versatile best here. One of my favorites is the powerful remake of "I knew you when", which proved that Linda could still belt out a tune with the best of them. One of the greatest performances I've ever heard on an album is the unbelievable "the moon's a harsh mistress". It's simply breath taking. The song is timeless. Easy for you to say is also a great song of heartbreak which linda does as good as anyone. Mr. Radio is haunting and beautiful. The rest of the album is good stuff as well of varying styles of music from country, new wave and rock and roll. Something for everyone.

For anyone that is seriously a fan of Alabama, this album again proves that the first 10 albums of Alabama are necessary to have a true and complete collection of the band. First, the full-length version of "The Closer You Get" is only available on this album. While "The Closer You Get" is not an Alabama original (originally recorded in 1980 by Exile as a pop hit), it remains one of their most classic and unique songs. Toe-tapping "Dixieland Delight" and the somber ballad "Lady Down On Love" also remain two of their most timeless hits. Songs like those prove how original the sound of Alabama was and still is today.

Aside from those three songs, two other songs on the album that were never released as singles warrant special recognition. The first is their excellent remake of "She Put The Sad In All His Songs", a song from the late 1970's that was covered by several artists including Ronnie Dunn of Brooks & Dunn fame. One of the finest songs on the album, it would have been a hit and could have been a classic had the song been extended with a long guitar solo and more generous string arrangement, but still was recrafted into a distinct song. "Alabama Sky", sung by Teddy Gentry is far from an inferior song as well and could have easily been a single as well.

While these recommendations may not impress the passive fan who remembers only their biggest songs, any serious fan or collector of Alabama's music should have this CD in their collection.

Most of what Alabama has done is simply great, they are one of the best country music groups to hit the scene. While this one is good, it kind of lacks the "punch" that put them in the spotlight, rather, it shows the more slow ballad style rather than up tempo. My two favorite songs would be the title cut "The Closer You Get", and "Dixieland Delight". If you want a quiet evening to lie back, relax and listen, then this one will be what you need.

someone above me said "The first time I heard this was at a party." I just want to say that must have been the worst party EVER. otherwise, if you're like me and spend your time alone, so alone, then this is the best cd to have a party with yourself to. a death party that is, suicide punch + weird phone calls to your close friends at 3:30am.

This album is so awesome. The first time I heard it I was at a friend's party. The next day I thought to myself I need to hear Hayden. I asked my friend if I could borrow his CD for a while. Needless to say I didn't return it for approximately two months. I must say that I enjoyed sitting on my porch sipping a cold drink and hearing his ear pleasing tunes echoing throughout the house. His lyrics come from the heart and let us see the gentleness that is behind the mask this curly-haired man wears. Hayden is even more moving in concert. Everyone should purchase this disk!

Hayden writes and sings sweet, sad, insightful songs about simple everyday things or events that really make the listener think about them in a different, more meaningful way. He also uses a variety of instruments on this album such as the steel guitar and a beautiful piano/cello combination on "Nights Like These" to make his music more flavorful. Hayden is my favorite male singer, and I highly recommend both of his albums.

When I first went into the music store I couldn't remember what the Hayden cd's title I wanted was. I saw two cd's there. One titled " Everything I long for" and the other " The Closer I get". I ended up buying " The closer I get". When I got it home and listened to it I found that the song that I liked was not on the cd. I thought about taking it back and exchanging for the one I wanted. But after I heard the cd, I found that I wanted to keep that one and buy all the Hayden cd's.

The problem with early-to-mid 90s dreampop was, mesmerizing as those sonic explorations were, the music was emotionally distant. You responded intellectually, enjoying the triumph of melody over noise. In some cases, you'd learn to love it - Sonic Youth's A Thousand Leaves and My Bloody Valentine's Loveless are highwater marks - but most of it was more trouble than pleasure (Spacemen 3 and others I can't recall). Six by Seven traffic in new millennium dreampop, but they make a deep, hard rocking impression. The Closer You Get, their second release, betters their first with varied tempos, sharper songs, more orchestrated clatter. Two songs are genre masterpieces: the gothic "Ten Places to Die", the roiling "My Life Is an Accident". When they can't get their songwriting in order, they do the next best thing: they rave, which usually counts for something.

Six by Seven are one of the brightest sparks in British music for some time, something which their second album "The Closer You Get" easily shows. Whilst the first album had good songs and promising signs it never really captured the raw power of Six by Seven live. "Eat Junk Become Junk" is a screaming dirty rampage of a song setting the tone for the whole album which makes you stop and listen. Just when you think the pace has dropped they'll launch something like "Slab Square" at you to knock you off your feet. How long can Six by Seven knock on the UK's and USA's door before somebody will listen?

6x7 come up with the goods yet again. Closer is a much more mixed bag than Things but none the worse for that. Most of the tracks here are already live favourites and the album sound is more in keeping with the live shows than previous releases. From the opening Eat Junk (marvellous) to the closing 100 and something Foxhall Road the sounds range from punk (towards the start) to Radiohead/Floyd/Joy Division towards the end. However, as good as the album is, it cannot truly represent the live fury that is a 6x7 gig, go seem them soon!

with this, their second album, england's SIX BY SEVEN up the volume, the emotion and the intensity level even more. where they seemed content to simmer before ('european me' from their debut LP, 'the things we make', for instance), this outing finds singer chris olley snarling bloody murder while the band lurches into white-noise meltdown mode behind him. there's really no way to describe the one-two punch of 'don't wanna stop' juggernauting into the roaring 'slab square'...you just have to turn it up (to 11, please) and let it hit you. the band shows that they're just as focused and devastating on the album's quieter moments as well; 'england and a broken radio' ebbs and flows with a hypnotic intensity all its' own. imagine radiohead snarflin' the steroids down and you might just have some small idea of the scope, passion and power of this excellent album...a serious contender for 2000's best thus far.

    5 out of 5 stars Consumate Candian Brass.......2000-08-12

    This is another great Canadian Brass retrospective. It is a varied and very listenable cross section of their recordings as of 1988. The selections extend from Bach to ragtime and Gershwin, and just about everything in between. Many of the selections are not usual brass fare, but are given the special, superb Canadian Brass treatment.

    this is a great cd, theres no two ways about it. i got this as a gift from my mother(both of us being trumpet players, we love brass stuff) and wore out my first copy. the range of music is wonderful, from classical to jazz and even gershwin, it has it all. a great cd to read by. it inspired me to buy the sheet music( its as much fun to play as to listen to). a fantastic addition to any music cllection.

Toe-tapping "Dixieland Delight" and the somber ballad "Lady Down On Love" also remain two of their most timeless hits. Songs like those prove how original the sound of Alabama was and still is today.

    Aside from those three songs, two other songs on the album that were never released as singles warrant special recognition. The first is their excellent remake of "She Put The Sad In All His Songs", a song from the late 1970's that was covered by several artists including Ronnie Dunn of Brooks & Dunn fame. One of the finest songs on the album, it would have been a hit and could have been a classic had the song been extended with a long guitar solo and more generous string arrangement, but still was recrafted into a distinct song. "Alabama Sky", sung by Teddy Gentry is far from an inferior song as well and could have easily been a single as well.

    While these recommendations may not impress the passive fan who remembers only their biggest songs, any serious fan or collector of Alabama's music should have this CD in their collection.

    Most of what Alabama has done is simply great, they are one of the best country music groups to hit the scene. While this one is good, it kind of lacks the "punch" that put them in the spotlight, rather, it shows the more slow ballad style rather than up tempo. My two favorite songs would be the title cut "The Closer You Get", and "Dixieland Delight". If you want a quiet evening to lie back, relax and listen, then this one will be what you need.

    Funky, New-Jack styled album from the former lead singer of Con Funk Shun shows Cooper adapting to the music of the time without flushing his musical talent down the toilet. Great tracks include "Do You" and "Skin Tight."
