The Sitar Beat series was built with the DJ in mind - collecting some of the wildest, heaviest and most psychedelic Indian Funk recorded and presenting it loud on wax, ready for the turntable. Now, due to popular demand, we’re collecting the heaviest cuts from this vinyl series and presenting them on a limited edition CD. The first four volumes were lessons in just how ahead of their time India’s Bollywood composers were in the 60s, 70s and early 80s. They dug into Indian deep funk and psycho-psychedelic masterpieces recorded for the Bollywood film industry. Alongside full length killers like the funkiest track from the rare “Qurbani” soundtrack, there were Bollywood funk fiestas by acclaimed composers such as Kalanji Ananji and R.D. Burman, with extended breakbeats and re-edits that upped the funk to the boiling point. Together with Ravi’s nephew Ananda Shankhar’s instrumental Sitar freak outs were diva Asha Boshle’s soulful wailings. Culling its music from rare vinyl and utilizing tasteful restoration and remastering, Sitar Beat was the first time that many of these songs are heard by the record-buying public - at least in this form. Edits remove any bobbing and weaving, leaving funk that only flies straight ahead!

3 out of 5 stars THE OFFICAL AMAZON HIP HOP REVIEWER.......2007-01-22

Hello and thank you for looking at the reviews for Guerilla Black, Guerilla city

I have heard a lot about this artist, alot of what i have heard is about his uncanny similarity to sounding like The notorious B.I.G, it also seem's like Guerilla Black has taken quite a knock of his reputation from this.
i can say that geurilla black does sound very similar to The Notorious B.I.G and i realy dont see why this is a bad thing!?

Before i knew about this artist i would of loved to buy another B.I.G album too hear his voice again, then Geurilla Black comes out and it is just like buying another NEW biggie album.

Geurilla Black does have the same type of flow as biggie and the same voice but the thing which let this album down and in my eye's makes it a total flop.... is the terrible production, i would expect production like this on Fat man scoops album but not on this album

Geurilla Black was brought up in Compton, California, Usa but yet when listening to this album just seems too south coast and has no unique compton style to it at all.

if your an old classic Eazy E, MC Ren, MC Eiht, DJ Quik, and the rest of compton fan when you'll be as discusded in this album as much as i was.
i wish i had spent my money on something else no matter how cheap i got it.

If you are a fan of Biggie then you'll love this guy's voice and i realy like Geurilla black but the production on this album realy is too new skool and you keep expecting Usher too popping into the songs and bust a ryhme.. .. .. ..

please miss this one out people.
thank you for your time and good luck with your searching.

      4 out of 5 stars Scary.......2006-08-29

Despite what some reviewers have said, this is a decent album with some good songs. What's freaky is how close this guy sounds to Biggie.

2 out of 5 stars Where would he be without Biggie??.......2006-02-24

no this album was just a really poor attempt at being the B.I.G. People say, "Well he isnt Biggie, hes Guerilla Black!!" I dont care, if he got his voice, well he cant do anything about that....but his style is exactly like Bigs...i dont agree wit this album at all, but the beats are nice...thats why i gave it the 2 stars i gave it...but still he needs to try something a little different, something that will characterize who he is, cus i think hes got something going for him. But it aint what hes doing now...

4 out of 5 stars On the right track.......2006-01-14

The B.I.G. comparisons are obvious, as his voice is pretty darn similar to Biggie's. His rhymes are not at Biggie's level, but I think as GB progresses, so will his lyrics.

I liked the album overall, its worth a buy in my mind, and so much better than all that rehashed southern hip hop crap that is growing like the kudzu along the roadways in the south.

Minus one star for the cliched and apparently obligatory "skits", which are horrible, not even a little funny. Skits should have pretty much ended after The Chronic, and all they do is wear out the track advance button on my deck. Seriously, anything new to be said in skit form should be included in the liner notes, but if I have to hear one more skit about the rapper having sex with an abundance of women, someone rolling up and shooting someone, or a completely non-sensicle shout-out, I'm gonna go postal.

      1 out of 5 stars Guerilla Wack.......2006-01-11

This album reeks of Biggie-inspired flows and rhymes. Even some of Biggie's old producers are on this album. For all the Guerilla Black supporters, if he wasn't biting, then where is he now? Why wasn't he invited to do a guest spot on the Biggie Duets album? And why do most of these reviews focus on him sounding like Biggie and not on his dope rhyme skills? Because he has none.

2 out of 5 stars Two tracks, not much for the price.......2001-10-10

Straight to the point, this single is only two tracks, the title track Guerilla Radio which may be found on the album Battle of Los Angeles. So if you love Rage Against the Machine, you probably already have the Battle of Los Angeles, which has several other hits on it. Then the second track is a live performance of Man Without A Face, a song that had been on the Evil Empire album. The song has a great live quality, good crowd reaction and a speech starting the song off, however sound quality is very unprofessional. It sounds as if it were recorded from the crowd near the stage. Guerilla Radio is a fair song from Rage, however it sounds very much like their song Vietnow, which also appears on Evil Empire. They are both songs with similar hooks, beats and choruses only Guerilla Radio has a faster and powerful beat to it. Two tracks for four dollars, then two more for shipping and handling, if you really want this CD to listen to some Rage, pick it up at your local music store for three bucks.

      5 out of 5 stars Lights out..........2000-10-21

Rage Against the Machine is an excellent band, and all of their cds are very worthwhile. However, rather than gettin the US version of the Guerrilla Radio Single, I would strongly suggest getting the Import. On the import there are more tracks, and I belive the live performances are not from their "Live and Rare" release unlike the "Without a Face" which is on this cd (don't quote me on that though). The Live Without A Face is not a very good recording, in my opinion, but it definetly has a live feel to it. Anyway, if you like RAGE, get this cd!

      5 out of 5 stars Totally Rocky!.......2000-05-01

This CD-Single Rocks. "Guerilla Radio" is a fantastic song. "Guerilla Radio" is the first great single from Rage Against The Machine's third album, "The Battle of Los Angeles".

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Damn Good.......2000-03-07

well, lets start from the beginning... I'll keep this pretty short. RATM is my favorite band in the entire universe. Guerilla Radio is a great track that has the coolest solo I have ever heard Tom do. Without a Face is much better live, but wholly I don't like the song very much. The main riff isn't very interesting, and it's pushing the hip-hop limit. All-in-all, a pretty good CD. I recommend their s/t CD, then Evil Empire, then Battle of LA in order to get the full feeling of Rage Against the Machine

      3 out of 5 stars a simple cd.......2000-02-28

I love RATM and I like their LPs better. This cd is alright, good for beginners.Guerrilla Radio is pretty good.Without a face is an awesome song about The White Wall.A fairly good cd

5 out of 5 stars Complete Electronic Mesmerization.......2002-02-09

Heldon must be one of the most underrated bands in the field of progressive rock. This is perplexing given the quality of the
group's music, especially on this set. Electronique Guerilla/It's Always Rock `n' Roll is nothing short of amazing. This
two-CD set compiles Heldon's first and third albums. They compliment each other well, so the continuity from one to the next
is nearly seamless. The music on these two albums is groundbreaking even by today's standards. In the early `70s, it must have
sounded as if it came from outer space. In fact, it is tempting to lump these albums in with the "kosmiche" or space music
genre of progressive rock typified by German bands and artists like Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel or Klaus Schulze. It
seems likely that these exerted at least some influence on Heldon's main man Richard Pinhas, but there are other forces at work
      here which make Heldon unique.

Pinhas was also under the sway of English bands like King Crimson, Soft Machine and
Matching Mole. The most obvious influence from England is undoubtedly the guitar playing of Robert Fripp. (On the second
Heldon album there is even a piece titled "In the Wake of King Fripp"!) Pinhas seems not the least bit ashamed to mimic
Fripp's distinctive "laser beam" sound and technique, but set against the backdrop of droning and gurgling synthesizers it creates
a completely different atmosphere from just about anything Crimson ever did. However, there is one track on this set, that
sounds as if it was created in an attempt to see how close Pinhas could come to recreating Fripp and Eno's "Swastika Girls"
from the legendary No Pussyfooting album. It's another slice of loveliness for those who wish there was more recorded
      Frippertronics available.

Another great piece is "Cotes de Cachalot ala Psylocybine." This eight minute soundscape pits ominous synth echoes against a
wailing, moaning, distant sounding electric guitar solo. Like most of this set, that's all there is to it. No drums, vocals nor a hint
of traditional song structure, just complete electronic mesmerization.

Disc two starts off with the massive "Aurore." This 18-minute piece begins and ends with a drone note melded from an analog
synth and a harmonium. An ultra-mellow synth melody develops and interlaces itself slowly around the constant drone. More
than once this writer has fallen asleep enveloped in this piece's analog cocoon only to be jolted awake by the all out guitar
assault of "Zind Destruction" three tracks later. This is the lone heavy piece on the entire set. Whatever "Zind" is, it definitely
gets completely destroyed by the end. This track foreshadows Heldon's more rhythmic proto-industrial guitar and synth noise
fests found on later albums like Un Reve Sans Consequence Speciale and Interface.

This set is absolutely essential listening for anyone interested in electronic music and is guaranteed to blow away most people's
ideas of what cutting edge music sounds like.

3 out of 5 stars The rocky beginnings of the Heldon archetypes.......2001-04-18

This 1993 Cuneiform Records release of two albums originally recorded in 1974 - 1975 is extremely well packaged, if a little bit confusing. I say well packaged because the music included is very similar in recording quality (or lack there of), musical maturity (or immaturity) and compositional consistency (or inconsistency). I also say confusing because these 2 CDs were originally released as Heldon's first and third albums (their second, and far superior, Allez Teia, has been released separately on CD by Cuneiform Records).

All three of Heldon's first albums were recorded on home equipment and, therefore, suffer in sound quality but this release of Heldon I and III (Electronique Guerillas and It's Always Rock 'N' Roll) seems to suffer much more than Allez Teia. Unfortunately, Heldon I/III does not suffer only from poor recording quality. True, they lay down the groundwork for the large catalog of albums Heldon and their lead composer/guitar player, Richard Pinhas, would release over the following two decades but they also contain much that is unpolished, unprofessional and downright cheesy.

Heavily influenced by the contemporary works of Robert Fripp (King Crimson), and especially Fripp's collaborations with Brian Eno, Richard Pinhas went on to become one of France's most influential electronic and Progressive Rock musicians. Pinhas's own impressive style of distorted guitar improvisation definitely grew up on a diet of Fripp but he rapidly applied this talent to musical directions all his own. Heldon fanatics will here find the early beginnings of what became the band's musical archetypes but, with a few exceptions, those archetypes are not stated cohesively enough to be very interesting from anything other than a historic point of view.

Among the highs of this release are Back to Heldon, in which we first encounter what would become a standard Heldon synthesizer stylization: warbling, bubbling synthesizer patterns overtop a bass drone, topped off by a meandering distorted guitar. Unfortunately, this 8-minute piece effectively ends 5 minutes into the song, then unwisely continues with cheesy synthesizer noodles for 3 additional minutes. Cocaine Blues delivers another Heldon archetype, the brooding dark analogue bass with sparse, repetitive melody overlaid by a shimmering sequencer line and intermittent sound effects. This is possibly the most typically Heldonesque piece on the CD and, set aside from the rest of the album, is rather pleasing. Virgin Swedish Blues and especially Ocean Boogi are explorations of Fripp & Eno style compositions and are by far the best works on these two CDs. They display the personal emotive sensitivities Richard Pinhas would later transform into the classic Heldon sound, while simultaneously making reference to the masterworks of Robert Fripp.

The worst of this 2-CD set offends with incomplete thoughts, immature compositions and musicianship, overly long, boring or uninteresting musical ideas. The worst of the bunch is Zind Destruction, which is simply a painful and embarrassing excursion into stoned living-room improvisation. If you went to college in the '70s and knew any musicians at all, you've heard it all too many times. This song is nothing but an electric bass and guitar blues-rock influenced improvisation being gated on and off and then further processed through musically unappealing delay and reverb. The effect it ugly and disgusting, especially after the previous track, Ocean Boogi, which, as stated above, is a wonderful and sensitive piece, very reminiscent of the best tracks on Heldon's second album, Allez Teia.

If you're a die-hard Heldon fan and really want to experience how much this band and its chief songwriter progressed and matured over the years, this CD is for you. Otherwise, start you Heldon investigations with Allez Teia and go on from there. For wonderful hidden gems like Ocean Boogi, I give this CD 2 stars, with a 3rd tacked on simply for Cuneiform Record's dedication to preserving the complete history of Heldon, a band which has too often been ignored by listeners investigating European electronic music from the 70s.

        Product Description

Good God! Where else can you find this many insane covers and interpolations of the Godfather of Soul, The Minister of Super Heavy Funk, The Funky President himself, James Brown? Or should we say, "of JB's mighty organizations of writers, arrangers, singers and dynamite musicians?" And no, we're not talking out the ubiquitous managers, Bud Habgood and Charles Bobbit, who received writers credit on damn near every James Brown record from the 60s and 70s… Rather, we're talking about the names you might find on a random JB production small enough that the man in charge felt he could give props where it was due. Like on the Steve Soul 45 with "Popcorn With A Feeling", where the writing credits list the likes of Jimmy Nolan, Clyde Stubblefield and St. Clair Pickney. Or the King issue of "Land Of Milk and Honey", where David Matthews gets his dap alongside Vicki Anderson.

HOT! The album is off the chain. The music set the tone and them boys spit it out. Dougie shined on this. Them boys over there at KMJ are doin it.

        5 out of 5 stars great album.......2002-07-02

This is the best rap album I've purchased in a while. The slow, melodic music combined with the fast-paced rap lyrics is addictive! It has been a frequent regular in my sound system since my purchase, and has me searching out their other albums.

        5 out of 5 stars G Maab's 2nd Best album.......2002-06-04

Guerilla Maab resurrected? Yup. This album recks. Trust me the album is the best rap album I heard out of O2'. Trust me this recks. It has Z-ro and Trea and Dougie D together again'. And they sound like they did their first album.
