I think this music is intended for adults, though the photo on the cover is of a sleeping baby. In any event, Schumann's work, Scenes From Childhood, Op. 15, featured here is more likely to bolt you out of bed than put you to sleep, as the mike is far too close to the piano being played by Cyprien Katsaris. Purcell's Adagio from The Indian Queen is magnificent, performed by John Elliott Gardiner and the English Baroque Soloists. The Weird Award goes to triple harpist Tim Hobrough and lutenist Stephen Barber for their bizarre, spiky rendition of Minuets Nos. 4 and 5 from the Notebook of Anna Magdalena Bach. I would like to meet Bill Holland, producer of all these Atlantic Records classical compilations. He's programmed Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1 on three different CDs, billed alternately as sensuous, romantic, and now here: good for a long snooze. --Gwendolyn Freed
Customer Reviews:
What is all the hype about?.......2007-07-09
I purchased this CD on the basis of the reviews written on Amazon. I have to say I am terribly disappointed. My son hates the CD, I listened to it and I am not all that impressed either. It is ok but nothing like described by other users.
great cd.......2007-06-26
We play this cd every night at bedtime. It not only helps my baby stay asleep, but helps me fall asleep. The only issue I have is that one of the tracks near the end of the cd is a little louder than the tracks before it, so I just make sure I keep it on very quiet and it's wonderful.
My girls listen to this every night.......2006-11-10
My girls (ages 3 & 5) have a hard time winding down at night. We have a regular bedtime routine (bath, snack, teeth brushing, books, hugs), but they still take forever to settle down and sleep. Adding this CD to the bedtime routine has really helped.
I would give it more than 5 stars...........2005-11-18
I had this CD when my daughter was born 5 years ago, and it gave us such a soothing environment in which to bond during quiet times. We also put it on shortly before we'd put her down to sleep, and by 6 weeks she was sleeping through the night in her own crib. I think it was her sanctuary, and the music helped her feel comforted. We've since then completely worn out the CD (she listened to it through her 3rd year), and will have to buy a new one for our next little addition (coming soon!). I found it on this site and just listened to the samples from each track. Aahhh... very soothing for Mommy, too!
I also plan to get it as a baby gift for a friend. :)
Great CD: soothing music by best performers. Worth every penny........2005-08-05
I listened to this CD countless times ever since I first bought it from BMG music service back in 1997. Compositions of this CD are popular classical hits. That is, you will likely recognize at least some of them if you listen to the sampler.
What sets this CD apart is supreme music performance. Every composition is performed flawlessly, with real feeling and passion. There is a good reason why this CD that was released in 1997 is still around and costs over ten dollars. This reason is called quality.

The title of this project is aptly-named. Regina Carter, a Detroit-born, classically-trained jazz violinist, traveled to Genoa, Italy in December, 2001, and performed on Paganini's legendary Guarneri violin nicknamed "the Canon." After winning the hearts of the skeptical Italians, with armed gunmen surveying her every move, Carter played flawlessly, and became the first jazz musician and African-American to the play the instrument. The next year, Carter returned to Genoa, recorded on Paginini's violin and performed a pleasing program of crossover-friendly light classics, South American compositions, a movie tune, and original works. Produced and arranged by Jorge Calandrelli and Ettore Strata, and backed by a combo led by pianist Werner "Vana" Gierig, the selections, while not exactly groundbreaking, successfully show off Carter's impeccable and soulful playing, and the violin's rich and reverent tones. An 18-piece orchestra supports Carter on Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante defunte," Piazzolla's "Oblivion," and Ennio Morrricone's Cinema Paradiso theme. Borislav Strulev's cello co-stars on Luiz Bonfa's "Black Orpheus (Manha de Carnaval)" and Faure's "Apres un reve." For Debussy's "Reverie," Carter delivers some straight-ahead swing. In sum: She came, she saw, she conquered and, she swung. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
Customer Reviews:
Still can't believe how bad it is.......2006-10-28
Terrible, terrible CD. I got it two day's ago and could not even listen through the whole CD. Regina plays the violin and the music with such bad taste. What a disgrace to the once Paganini's violin. I can't believe I spent my money on this. It should not even have 1 star.
Like a breeze, caressing you..........2006-08-21
Well, you know how there are some songs that work best in their original form and should not be remade / remixed / jazzed up by any musician at all? Regina Carter is the exception to that rule, for her touch is magic.
Save for Regina's own composition, every song on this album is given a contemporary jazzy twist. The sound is light, breezy and wistful. Regina possesses the inimitable ability to make a violin sing so tenderly, it breaks your heart just listening to her play. This lovingly produced album is the perfect companion for many things: a candle-lit dinner, appreciating a beautiful painting, retrospection, a drink in a bar, a ride in a car, gazing at scenery from afar... the possibilities are endless.
Generally, the problem with remaking well-known songs is that playing the tune, give and take some rephrasing or improvisation, is not enough. To impress, the arrangement, playing, and overall production has to be inspired and tight. In this respect, Regina delivers. It is unfortunate that there are some moments on this album which sound a tad "too easy" or, for lack of a better word, pedestrian. But given the overall substance of this album, those moments are easily overlooked.
For those familiar with the original classical works on this album, they would surely appreciate and marvel at how Regina manages to make songs that are tough to remake, sound so gloriously refreshing. Like a breeze, caressing and loving you, this album is a god-sent.
Regina Carter is Fantastic!.......2006-04-19
This is one of the most beautiful collections of classical jazz in the world. The music is beyond words. Every song speaks to my soul. It is one cd that everyone needs to add to their music collection.
Music from heavens.......2005-12-23
I a Jazz fan. However, I have never though that a violin can do that magic. It is not like anything that I have listened to before.
Truly a dream cd.......2005-07-09
This is a cd to listen to again and again. I've given it as gifts and as a violinist myself who has been to Cremona and viewed those beautiful old violins, it has been a treat! I recommend this cd to anyone who wants a flavor of the classical that has been jazz inspired. Regina Carter's style plus "The Cannon" was a match made in heaven. I own a great deal of music, but this cd is one of my top ten favorites! She is definitely on my list of performers to see as friends have told me that she is wonderful!

Beautiful !.......2006-12-31
This is a beautiful and relaxing cd to listen to. I bought it while i was pregnant and still love it now that my daughter is 3 months old. It is so calming and what mother doesn't need that? :-)
proud father to be.......2004-01-01
I found this cd after my wife gave birth to our first child unfortunately. Now my wife is expecting our second child. I am a big believer in classical music for unborn babies, delivery rooms, all the way to kindergarten. My four year old daughter hears 'twinkle twinkle little star' anywhere and she about faces instantly! Pachelbel's Canon is another personal favorite. I respect anything Deutsche Grammophon puts their endorsement on, too. Highly recommended for pregnancy stress reduction, labor jitters, and little toddlers.
Terrible!!.......2002-01-29
The CD opens with "Twinkle, Twinkle. Little Star" - Now, that should tell you everything. . . YUK!
This compilation is a huge let down and has nothing to do with pregnancy or childbirth. I could have put my own tape together better from my own CD collection instead of wasting my money on this lousy one.
TUNE YOUR BRAIN: PREGNANCY & CHILDBIRTH.......2001-09-30
This is an incredibly relaxing and tranquil album not only for pregnancy and childbirth but for anyone with an ear for classical music. The pieces are soothing and moving, and the varied selections make for a placid work that calms and relaxes. Plus, it puts the little one right to sleep!

A Life Saver!.......2005-11-12
I bought this CD when my first son was a few months old. He had colic and this was the only CD which seems to sooth him. Plus I have to admit that it relaxes me as well. My oldest son in now 4 1/2 and still asks for me to put it on a few times a week.We now have another son and I think I'm going to buy another one! It really works! All the nights it added to his sleep are priceless to me!!!!
A Bedtime Ritual that has endured for SEVEN YEARS.......2000-11-16
and is still going strong! I bought the cassette when my son was two years old. It always helped sooth him to sleep and is a wonderful accompaniment to bedtime reading. On occasions when we had to take him to a babysitter or out of town on vacation, we would bring G'night Wolfgang to help him feel secure &lull him to sleep in an unfamiliar place. I thought he would tire of it by now, but we all still love it and listen several nights a week at bedtime. This timeless music also works its magic to calm frazzled parental nerves any time of day or night. Though it wasn't our original intention, I do think this collection (and our ritual)has given our son an enduring appreciation for classical music that will probably last a lifetime. Now he's nine years old and chooses his own music which is a bit trendier, funkier (and definitely louder!), but he seems to know there's a place in our psyche well-served by enchanting classical music such as this.
excellent bedtime music.......1998-10-22
this c.d. is a wonderful choice of bedtime music for infants and toddlers. I have played this c.d. everynight since my 2 year old was 2 months old. He absolutely loves it. Plus they say Mozart is good for the brain!

After reinterpreting Arab classics on Diwân, Rachid Taha returns with a stunning collection of original compositions that owes as much to rock as to his Algerian rai roots, connecting the dots between Europe and the Maghreb. Here he again teams with producer Steve Hillage (Gong, System 7), whose guitar work and arrangements provide the muscular frameworks for Taha's songs and emotive voice. Rachid's new direction has all the power of rock, as on "Foqt Foqt," which maintains an insistent riff while retaining the delicacy and polyrhythms characterizing North African music. "Ala Jalkoum" offers a duet with Afrobeat superstar Femi Kuti while "Verité" and "Ho Cherie Cherie" could have come from a Peter Gabriel album. Made in Medina is a massive, but still natural, step forward that establishes Taha as the most visionary Algerian singer today. --Chris Nickson

Really amazing.......2007-01-04
I, like many others, bought this cd after hearing Barra Barra on Blackhawn Down. I was pleasingly surprised to find that the rest of the cd is nearly as engaging. Garab is similar, with rhythmic lyrics and rock beats, and ala jalkoum is a ballad equally as entertaining. For people who like world music, particularly world flavour blended with western rhythmic beats and an edgy essence, this is a cd to add to their collection. Best songs: Barra Barra, Ala Jalkoum, En Retard, Garab.
Sit up and take notice!.......2002-10-06
A couple of weeks ago I heard the last cut on this CD--"Garab"-- played on an online radio station. I could scarcely believe what I heard! Rachid Taha is new to me; his style of music, Rai, is not played very much in the U.S. Basically, it's an internationally-evolved music originating with the traditional styles of North Africa (especially Algeria) as transformed by various interbreedings with Western blues, traditional, and folk. It is especially popular in Paris, where there are many expatriate Algerians, and Taha in this album has infused his roots with a stark 'urban punk' influence that can really smoke. It helps that the album is produced by Steve Hillage (formerly associated with groups like Gong, The Orb, and System 7), who knows well where to add a bit of meat to make the mix take off. "Garab", for example, is a long, continually escalating trance piece that starts rather innocently but by its end immerses you in an atmosphere that would frighten the demons of hell. Buy it! You'll like it!
This CD tries too hard.......2002-08-20
I was disapointed with this CD as the artist tries too hard to be do too much in 1 CD. It tries to incorporate too many styles without doing justice any any of them. It isn't a dance, or techno CD and is far too Western to be culturally Arabic. I felt I got nothing of what I was looking for which was contemporary and dancible Rai. This is more atune to Alternative music with foreign lyrics.
My third Taha album.......2002-07-06
My first experience with Taha was when I found Ole Ole while browsing the International section at a CD store. Never heard of him before, but loved the album. I'm always looking for different world beat music.
So then I bought Diwan. Hated it. Too traditional for me, I guess. Never could listen to the whole album. It easily made the first cut when dumping CDs on an unsuspecting music dealer.
Wasn't sure which direction Medina would go, but the comments on the album cover sounded encouraging. Love it. Better than Ole Ole.
...
This one grows on you - Buy it!.......2002-04-08
First, my prejudice: I like RAI music, as well as old stuff like Fairuz, and African musicians like Samba Ngo and Habib Koito. I really liked this album! But not without reservations - here's some minor gripes:
The first song Barra Barra has been heard as background in BlackHawk Down and in a PBS special on the intifadah al jadeeda. Still, Taha et al. dropped the ball - they could have transfigured the theme into something even more interesting in the middle section after it revs up into electric ... but it ends strong.
The song "Made in Medinah" itself is a bit repetitive and too much on the Eurotechno side for my taste.
The fifth song, Aie-Aie-Aie, also disapoints insofar as it could have been improved by avoiding the Aie-Aie-Aie theme which will not play well with English speakers (liable to hear it as the plaintif aye-yay-yay of Yiddish fame). Once I got used to that (yes ana amreekee), however, it became one of my favorites on the album.
Overview: I think this album has the potential to make inroads into the American audience and so my criticisms are pointed at what I think might impede this, presumably desireable (read: money), goal.
Overall, full marks as our British friends exclaim (well, they used to...

Customer Reviews:
Me Gusta Boca Beth!.......2007-05-18
I have 4 kids under 8 years old, and they all love this CD, especially my 3 year old. The songs are catchy and easy to learn, and use tunes that the kids already know. We've easily listened to it 100 times, and the kids are just as engaged as they were the first time, though now they can sing along. My 3 year old will wander around the house singing the songs over and over again, though sometimes that makes them get stuck in MY head. Clearly, they are having fun, and they've definitely started learning Spanish well beyond what Dora teaches them.
The only issue I had with the CD, which kept it from getting 5 stars, is that the production quality could be better, and because of this it was sometimes hard to distinguish between B sounds and P sounds. A lyrics sheet for the parents would help this. But the kids didn't care - they love it, so therefore I do, too.
Boca Beth is the Best.......2004-10-01
We love Boca Beth!!! My daughter Samantha loves all the music. She loves to sing and what a gift to know she is learning while she is doing it. What a wonderful feeling to have your child come to you and tell you she knows when her birthday is and when you ask her When? She tells you in Spanish. Money can't buy that!!! Thank you Boca Beth
Boca Beth makes learning fun.......2004-10-01
We love Boca Beth. My daughter just loves to sing and what a delight to know she is learning while she is doing it. We love the CD's and DVD's. How proud I was when she came to me to tell me that she knew when her birthday was. When i asked when? She told me in Spanish.... Thank you Boca Beth
We highly recommend this product for you and that young someone special in your life.
Positives outweigh negatives.......2004-09-14
This CD has so much appeal to my 4 and 2 year olds that I've decided to keep it, however, I was a little shocked upon hearing grammatical and pronunciation mistakes. I'm no expert in Spanish but studied the language for 7 years. When I heard the pronunication of "azul" with a hard "z" like zebra I was a little surprised. Then "limpia" was pronounced with a soft "i" like "limp" in English. Things continued in this "Spanglish" fashion when I heard that "el perro diga woof." I'm pretty sure "el perro dice woof."
Thumbs up for the bouncy, happy tunes, but thumbs down for the nitpicky details.
Boca is the best!.......2004-09-04
My toddler loves this CD. I just got back from a 2 hour car ride(from Disney to Tampa) and it entertained him the WHOLE way. Even though he is only 17 months he sounds out English and Spanish words TOGETHER!!
We are so excited about this program and I look forward to learning Spanish with my child (and our nanny is learning with us too!!)

Relaxing music at its finest!.......2005-10-14
This is a GREAT 10-CD set!The performances are top-notch, the music is varied, and the feelings engendered are wondrously beautiful.
Get it for $9.99 at Sam's Club!.......2005-06-22
Very nice set of CD's, very beatiful and relaxing, but don't pay $27, get it for $9 at Sam's Club. I know this will be censored but come on, how can you guys charge those saps that much! Amazon should try to find the best price for its customers, even if it sends them to different vendors. Censoring this message is a crime, DON'T DO IT. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Beautiful, moving music! You'll recognize many of the pieces.......2004-02-24
John Cheng's review, below, said it's "an undeniable bargain," and I whole heartedly agree! I especially LOVE Volume 5. I have a Typing/Resume business, and I listen to Volume 5 ALL the time on my computer while I'm doing my work. It inspires me to be creative and calms me down when I'm stressed.
I would say I've _easily_ listened to Volume 5 at least 100 times, and I'm still not tired of it. That's amazing for me, because I'm also a musician (singer/pianist) and I get bored easily. I actually found the Volume 5 CD at a Thrift store, and loved it so much that I bought the whole set recently. So I've only listened to a few of the other CD's in this set, so far, and they're also great.
This is NOT boring music. My clients and family have heard it also, and they've also mentioned how soothing and wonderful these pieces are. Most of you will probably recognize a lot of these songs! You'll be saying, "OH! I remember THIS one! I haven't heard this for YEARS!!!"
It's well worth the money for 10 very full CD's!!! Try it! You won't be disappointed!
Happy listening!

Meditative, But Not Boring.......2002-06-21
Here's the deal: If you check out the individual CDs of this collection, you'll pay way too much. That said, compare this price, and realize it is a steal at twice the price.
The list of selections is immense. 101 selections. Most of it you've heard before, but that's OK. Despite the various cute names -- quite creative -- "Vol. 9"!... you can load your CD player and enjoy them without feeling a transition of style.
It's true these aren't meditative in the sense of a Gregorian chant. Anyone familiar with classical music will recognize the composers and various movements to know this. What is true is that you can sit down and write Amazon reviews with it in the background quite comfortably. No weird interpretations, just the music as you know it.
It is also meditative in the sense of popping on it your portable player as you go for a Sunday afternoon walk. The music has just the right pacing: no quite aerobics class, but not ready for the office elevator either.
The box and jewel cases are not that flimsy kind of thing often associated with box sets. It sounds silly to review the jewel cases, but I'm frustrated with the ones I've received lately that have no meat to them. This'll do the job.
I fully recommend "Meditation: Classical Relaxation, 10 Volume Set [BOX SET].

A Bargain and Beautiful.......2002-02-28
This is a wonderful collection of some of my most favorite classical selections. Most I already own, but still like having these all together. I could only wish that the recording level was the same for all selections. Yes, some are written to be softer, but I found it often necessary to turn the volume up or down for different selections. But aside from this minor preference, the quality, the choices, and the price are all super.

Classic Kid Creole.......2006-12-04
Kid Creole & the Coconuts were one of the most innovative and underrated bands of their era. They were probably way over the heads of most listeners despite their commercial potential. Their first albums combine some of the best aspects of disco, new wave and early jazz. Not to mention the fact that their albums were uncommonly consistent and solid, listenable from start to finish. The genuinely funny and outré lyrics make even the less hooky songs fun. Their 1981 album Fresh Fruit in Foreign Places is an exhilarating and hypnotic listen. The All Music Guide reviewer called it 'esoteric' and 'an acquired taste', but this ignores the immediacy and catchiness of the material. Kid Creole seems to be a sort of living transportation of Cab Calloway to the disco era, with the same sort of manic energy, charisma and naughty feel. The music is quite similar to the wonderful work of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band (part of that group went on to form the Coconuts).
Kid Creole didn't suffer from the chunky, dated production values of his contemporaries, however, (at least not until his next album, 1983's Tropical Gangsters, which had strong melodies but was comparatively underwhelming) and his music sounds fresher than any other pop group of the era. Some highlights: the infectious Table Manners, the clever Animal Crackers, With a Girl like Mimi and In the Jungle.
An amazing record - period........2005-01-24
After hearing August Darnell (Kid Creole)'s production work on Cristina's debut album (and also helped along by memories of my father playing "Don't Take my Coconuts" a lot when I was a kid) I decided to give this band a real chance, and picked up all four of the ZE releases on vinyl. Though they are all worth picking up, "Fresh Fruit" really stands out to me as the best of those four. There is not one song on here that I can say I dislike. What really grabs me about it is that every song is different, stylistically, but still maintains a "sound" that connects all of them. Among the tracks, "Animal Crackers" (a reggae-ish number about customs denying entrance of such things as frosted flakes and coffee cakes), "Going Places", "I Am", "I Stand Accused" and "Table Manners" are my personal favorites, but this is not to discount the other amazing tracks. Darnell's lyrics are astounding once you pay attention to them, and the fusion of latin/r&b/disco/rock/caribbean/reggae is just unequalled by anyone else. Also, the bonus tracks make this worth buying alone. The 12" version of Table Manners is a godsend -- and the Coati Mundi track "Me No Pop I" is quite possibly the best thing to come out of Andy Hernandez. The remaster quality is insanely wonderful - so much detail brought out that the LP format tended to bury. I feel like I'm mumbling here - but this is just a landmark in modern music and it should be in everyone's collection regardless of their musical inklings. Intelligent, funny, groovin' -- just try to not be happy when listening to this. Awesome.
One of my Top 10 Desert Island discs........2004-11-02
In a way, a concept album about the difficulty of staying in love. I bought the LP when it first came out, recorded it to tape, and played that cassette on just about every highway in Arizona way long ago. Not a misfired song in the bunch. Hard to pick a favorite one, but "Table Manners" and its read-between-the-lines lyrics comes close. If you happen to be "rediscovering" old music, beyond what Billboard deemed popular in the last several decades, the early albums of this group are worth adding to your collection.
Latino Si, Yanqui No!.......2002-11-05
Finally! Too bad it took Universal U.K. to re-release this long-lost "mutant disco" classic (Sire had the U.S. rights way back when). The logical successor to Off The Coast Of Me and the first part of Creole's extended concept album series stands as the ultimate disco concept album (which works superbly well without the story line either...) thanks to a veritable diaspora of sound: Latin American, disco, rock, pop, even a slight trace of - dare we say it - punk! This is still fun stuff. And though it doesn't contain as big a hit as "Endicott" or "My Male Curiosity", it's every bit as lovable, dancable, groovable, skankable. Key tracks include "In The Jungle", "Animal Crackers", "I Stand Accused" (a witty little throw-away that spoofs weepy seventies soul ballads a-la "Coldest Days Of My Life"), "Musica Americana" (with its infamous "latino si, yanqui no" chorus), "I Am", "With A Girl Like Mimi" and "Table Manners". Toss in two great bonus tracks (the essential "Que Pasa/Me No Pop I" especially), great sound and Kid Creole-interview liner notes and you've got a first-class reissue. Manic fun to be had for all! Listen and groove! Memo to Universal: please try to release more Ze Records stuff! I especially miss Don Armando's 2nd Avenue Rhumba Band and their cool remake of Irving Berlin's "I'm An Indian, Too" (which Creole produced).

Lovely Music For A Lonely Night.......2006-08-24
I have to admit I'm a very recent convert to the music of Lloyd Cole. I've been listening to his entire back catalog for only a few months now and THIS is my favorite work of his. I know that must sound like blasphemy to long time fans, who place works like "Rattlesnakes" at the top of the heap. It's just that, to my ears, the production values on so much of his 80's and 90's music now sounds terribly dated. It seems like he used to be hoping for radio hits using the glossy techniques of the time (not that his magnificent voice and lyrics don't make up for that a bit). I know the earlier records must sound different to people who experienced it all the first time through, but without any of that inherent nostalgia, I just can't quite connect to the earlier stuff (even though I really want to!). "Music In A Foreign Language" got me right away however. It just plays to his strengths. It's a quiet acoustic record, yes. I love that about it. It's the perfect setting for Cole's romantic musings. There's more space for his voice and the spotlight is on good songwriting. This is just a gorgeous record. "Love Story" is my favorite Cole album after this. I can't wait for the next one!
Ethereal Simplicity.......2005-03-12
Ever Sensible, English Songwriter offers Equal Servings of Experienced Skill (the not-so minimalist Exquisite Stab at production), Eager Stoicism (a new twist on the legendary Cole irony), Elusive Sincerity ("No More Love Songs"), and Enigmatic Sentimentality ("Cutting Out") that will not alienate his once-Emotionally Stifled core following of Eighties Students from the Rattlesnakes days and has already Earned Stars from reviewers (the Employed Sort ...). There's even an Edgy Standard ("People Ain't No Good", by Nick Cave), and some Exceptional Singing pops up as well. Whether there Exists Some Empathetic Sadness in "Shelf Life" is Entirely Subjective. Add the Ever So Effective Strumming of Lloyd and Erstwhile Sideman Neil Clark, and the End Sum is an Excellent Sixth Solo Effort! (Etc. Stands as an Editorial Supplement for "the Negatives", and I note but do not include Electronic Scores... ).
Lloyd's ECCENTRIC SERENADE is ENTIRELY SATISFYING!!
(and I apologize for the excrutiating structure of each sentence- "Self-actualizing Masterpeice", though true, presented many obstacles...)
p.s. I swear I'll never do it again!
Yeah, Brazil is Where they Have the Goodies.......2004-12-09
Been a fan of Lloyd's since '84 and Rattlesnakes. That record continues to be un-matchable, but this is a decent outing like, what, 20 years later! Hmmm, mellow, quaint, evocotive and somewhat mysterious. Worth it for the track "Brazil" alone - as they do have the goodies down there. Remember, their Summer is our Winter.
Lloyd cole Goes Noir.......2004-10-05
From its bleak and spare album art right down to the music's incessant hush, Lloyd's quieter side is obviously gaining the upper hand with age. His gorgeous "No More Love Songs," the most restrained number on his earlier masterpiece, "The Negatives," gets an appropriate makeover here as a raw acoustic stunner, while "Alibi" evokes the poignant sincerity Lloyd achieved both musically and lyrically on "ETC," argually the most cohesive project of his career. But the thing that is missing on many of these songs is Robert Quine's guitar. Quine, who's deft hand lent an urgency to both "ETC" and "The Negatives" that seemed the perfect accompaniment to Lloyd's rainy-day disposition, committed suicide this past May following the death of his wife. The absence of those electrifying atmospherics Cole and Quine achieved together is profoundly absent throughout "Music in a Foreign Language." As usual, Cole brings his heart and guts to the microphone on all of these tasteful compositions, but often the album's minimalist approach serves as oddly distracting. Where the abrupt flare of a harmonica or lap steele drove a river of fire through much of "ETC," here it is as though we listen in as Cole whispers himself to sleep. As usual, the banter is memorable and rings with the inarguable truths of a literary master, but I think it is telling that the best song here is "No More Love Songs." The newer material just doesn't quite pack that one-two punch of biting lyrics whose eloquence is outdone only by the music they're draped in, and the cover of Nick Cave's "People Aint No Good" adds nothing to the original. On that song as with many on "Music in a Foreign language," I couldn't shake off the feeling that Cole could have dug a little deeper, reached a little farther. This is still a beautiful and hypnotizing record -- Lloyd Cole will never cut a poor album -- but I must admit that Cole sounds somewhat bored here. I wonder whether some kind of new direction is needed.
Long Shelf Life.......2004-07-06
"Music in a Foreign Language" showcases a slightly more wistful side of Lloyd Cole. The music and arrangements are understated when compared to much of his earlier work, while the lyrics offer the jaded perspective of a man on the verge of middle age who's "been there and done that." "No More Love Songs", originally on Cole's previous album "The Negatives", appears in a stripped-down acoustic version, while a cover of Nick Cave's "People Ain't No Good" is aptly chosen for its relentless cynicism. It's a mature work displaying the talents of a thoughtful and skilled songwriter.
