3 out of 5 stars Still Open.......2004-04-20

Former Soft Cell singer and creator of several solo records dedicated to Georges Bataille and Jacques Brel, now releases a record on his own Blue Star label, released here in America on Instinct. The torch singer we know is present on a few of the opening tracks like "Night & Dark" and "Tragedy." Almond has definitely updated his sound, and made an all-around listenable record. Kelli Ali and Siouxie Sioux duet with Marc on certain tracks. Also there are three bonus tracks including the lovely "Satan's Child." Almond's palette is both light and dark, and fans of Gavin Friday and Nick Cave should come round to this one. Not his best, but the first good one in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars MASTERPIECE.......2002-12-07

THE MOST TOUCHING, BEAUTIFUL ALBUM EVER.
DO NOT MISS THIS!!

4 out of 5 stars Dark Beauty.......2000-12-20

Marc Almond has put together an almost flawless disc that fans of trip hop, goth and jazz pop can all enjoy. I like every song except for the "extra U.S. tracks", which were rather lame. I also must go against most of the reviews on here and say I think "Threat of Love" with Siouxsie Sioux is horrible. Though their voices are well matched, the song itself is wretched. My favorite tracks include the hypnotic, mystical, humorous "Bedroom Shrine", the sensual, elegant, jazz pop of "Bad People Kiss" and the upbeat yet sad "Tragedy." This is a great disc to play on a rainy winter night.

4 out of 5 stars not his best but disc gets better with listening.......2000-09-10

ive been a fan of marcs since "jacky" when he releases a record its cause of excitement, especially in this country where the question of "who the hell is marc almond" is asked.when this disc came out i bought it with no idea what it would be like, the usual brooding sexual contempt masquarading as ballads, the potentially hitmaking dance tracks? the answer, this is not marcs best,it is flat, monotone, gothic almost. the themes ,as always, are darkly sexual. his usual midnight cruise of soho feel. but the hooks and lyrics do catch you overtime and you see the beauty and ugliness in each song. a duet wth siouxie is a standout. this may not be his definitive work ,for that get "enchanted",but for now it'll do.

2 out of 5 stars A Real Disappointment.......2000-04-19

I, too, have been an Almond fan for a long time, and I read the positive reviews of Open All Night with great anticipation. I have to say, I honestly cannot understand why anyone finds this dull, uninspired, and lyrically embarrassing disc so worthy of praise. And it pains me to say that, as Almond's Mother Fist album is one of my all time faves and still holds up, as does his The Stars We Are (REISSUE, PLEASE!) and Untitled. The duet with Siouxsie sounds cooler than it is (their voices mesh nicely; same on the other duet with the Sneaker Pimps siren--but neither are particularly good, um, songs). "Tragedy" (grand-scale fun Marc), "Black Kiss" (silly-nasty-dancy Marc), and the closing track, "Midnight Soul" (nasty blues--a cool new direction for him) are the only tracks even worth listening to, although they do hint at more interesting directions for Marc to pursue (an album of creepy blues songs seems so up his alley I WISH he'd give it a go). The rest of the disc I rank among his worst efforts mostly because they attempt absolutely nothing and are even kind of embarrassing to listen to, and he's too clever a boy to do such a thing.
