Customer Reviews:
Surprised by this GREAT album.......2006-01-24
When I started collecting Denison Witmer's back catalogue of albums after turning on to his fabulous 2005 release (ARE YOU A DREAMER?), I was the least hopeful about this album, RECOVERED, a collection of cover version of early 70s singer-songwriters. Although I had a few of these albums in my record collection (Carole King's TAPESTRY, Joni Mitchell's BLUE), I was not strictly a follower of this Dylan-influenced post-folk tradition. So why would I want a collection of retro cover versions by a 1990s/2000s singer-songwriter I'm just getting into?
Surprise-- I can't get this CD out of my player! This is totally atypical of me-- I like to cycle my listening through a wide range of styles. But no matter what else I play, all I can think is, would it be ridiculous to play RECOVERED again? My biggest concern is that I'm going to get sick of it if I continue like this, but with each playing the emotional honesty of the songs just gets better.
I did not know many of the songs on this album. You couldn't have paid me to listen to records by Fleetwood Mac in the 70s and 80s, but this Christine McVie tune, "Songbird," is enchantingly sung by Denison. Jackson Browne I had more appreciation for, but I am still stunned by Witmer's moving delivery on "These Days." But the biggest highlight of all is the ambient electronic backdrop and loops behind Carole King's "So Far Away," with Denison's voice hushed and barely cracking into song. His love for CSNY comes through on sensitive remakes of Graham Nash's "Simple Man" and Neil Young's "Love in Mind."
Tribute albums can often be pretty embarrassing affairs, but this one does a whole tradition proud and points out how silly we are to overlook its influence and importance. Spread the word far and wide about this CD.
Denison Does Himself Doing Fleetwood Mac and Others.......2003-08-11
Most cover albums leave a bad taste in my mouth. Musicians have forgotten how to play songs they actually LOVE and instead retreat to seeing how funny it would be to play songs like "Earth Angel" in punk rock (or whatever style said band/singer enjoys). Thankfully, for his cover album, Denison Witmer picks out songs he loves and plays them with personal passion.
I have to admit, I was quite surprise Witmer would do a cover album, of all people. I always associated cover albums with aforementioned goofball punk bands (hello Ghoti Hook). But after hearing these songs I wasn't surprised at all. From the gentle beauty of Neil Young's "Love in Mind" and Big Star's "Nightime" to the more energized "Farther On" by Jackson Browne, Witmer amazingly makes these songs his own. Not one track sounds out of place or awkward. A naive music listener could pick this up and think they are all Witmer's original work.
As Dave Bazan and Nick Cave are making honest, spiritual music important again, Witmer is doing his duty in resurrecting the cover album. A job well done, I must say. But do check out his original work, too.

Congress's most musically talented member.......2006-10-29
I must admit. I was interested in hearing this recording out of curiosity, since John Hall was running for Congress in my district and I become a volunteer on his campaign. A while back, at a campaign event, I got him to autograph my copy of this.
Having said that, I actually find myself really liking the music on this, even though I lean much more in the direction of indie/alternative rock. I remember the two big Orleans hits from my high school days, songs I always found likeable, but the versions here, which are kind of "unplugged," are really great. John sounds really passionate in his delivery of them, and his supporting musicians, including the great Tony Levin, do a fine job in backing him. In fact, I can't seem to stop listening to this version of Still the One; it's my song of the month this month.
Other songs here are quite nice, as well. Good Enough has a great rhythmic line and some good lyrics. The reggaeish Give One Heart is also a really nice song and a nice message. Half Moon sounds to me like it could be a Steve Winwood tune, with some really good singing by Mr. Hall. Two Faced World has a really nice funk sound. And the song Power is great, showing a deep social consiousness, one which was responsible for the No Nukes movement. Overall, this is a really decent record by a really really good guy. (And I rejoice that he won the election, and even got to sing a bit at his victory rally on election night.)
Refreshing.......2005-02-15
Classic radio stations tend to play great songs to death: Mr. Tambourine Man and Turn, Turn ,Turn by the Byrds; Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones; Dance With Me and Still the One by John Hall and Orleans. "Recovered" highlights these two songs and others in new semi-unplugged versions written by John and his wife Johanna and one written with country artist Steve Wariner. Johanna wrote the liner notes telling the history of the songs origins beginning with Half Moon in 1969 which was recorded first by Janis Joplin in 1970 and in 1973 by Orleans.
John's guitar playing both acoustic and electric is full of emotion and with an intimacy that helped me to better appreciate the original versions. He is backed by Tony Levin-bass, Ralph McDonald-percussion, Peter O'Brien-drums, and the incomparable Robbie Dupree-harmonica.
Pop songs in the Nude!.......1998-07-12
With the release of this great new collection of "Recovered" gems, Songwriter/Activist/Sailor/Ski Bum John Hall shows that he belongs amongst the elite of today's finest songsmiths. Along with the lyric talents of longtime wife/partner in song, Johanna, Hall brings sweet harmony and sky high melody to an almost perfect union. If you are a fan of Hall's 70's pop-rock hitmaking group, "Orleans"..remember, "Still The One" & "Dance With Me" ? you will be able to re-visit those old standards with a new appreciation. If You are a fan Hall's early 80's material, you will be amazed at the power that eminates from behind these not-quite-unplugged versions. This album has been in my cd player for days now. In a perfect world, these versions would have been the original releases. Thank's John & Johanna for letting your message of enpowerment & light grace my ears in such a wonderful manner. Buy this cd now...you won't be let down for even a moment!

for all the far fans.......2000-09-27
My friend works with Claude from Anything Box at a music store. If you want some info on their upcoming shows just email me at otis_and_bianca@yahoo.com . I heard most of the songs and i must say you wont be dissapointed. Their gonna play a show with Channel in Anahiem next month so if your from around here check them out. I hear they might sign with Matador. Cheers
Slightly disappointed loyal fan.......2000-05-13
I am a diehard Anything Box fan who has had to search long and hard to buy all of their albums from obscure record labels. The cd states that they wanted to have a "more Kraftwerkian sound, simple, basic." This is exactly what you get. While all of their other cd's have disappeared, i'd wouldn't want to see this CD stand alone to represent an incredible Synthpop band. The die-hard A-Box fans, like myself, will undoubtedly buy the cd and I'm sure they will find enough songs to justify the cheap price. Casual listeners may not be as impressed.
Thank You!.......2000-03-06
This one almost never made it to your ears! Most of the songs were lost due to machine breakage in the studio. Thankfully Claude S. was able to go back and recover the band's favorite songs! I think this is a wonderful continuation in the evolution of The Box. It starts with the catchy "The Great Divide," (the only A-Box song in 2/3 tempo?), which has a great melody and cool harmonizing. "Sunday," a few tracks later is one you'll be humming along to in no time as well. My favorites by far are "Un-reconciled" and "Goodbye." These are two of their best songs ever! "Un-reconciled" is a result of a beautiful yet haunting piano and Claude's one of a kind way of painting emotions with his words and voice. "Goodbye" is a synth laden joy. Not only did I love the words, but the layering and blending of the voice and music. Anyone that has ever been through a break-up will appreciate this one. Of course the rest of the CD is awesome, I just wanted to touch on some high points. I am so thrilled this has been released. Definitely add this to your collection...
Disappointing.......2000-03-05
The story goes the studio tape recorder used to record this album, was also the one to nearly destroy it. Hence the title, "recovered". I find it really really hard to find redeeming songs on this comp. Nothing on it really fits in with "Peace", "Hope", "Worth", or "elektrodelica". the tracks are sort of moody and dark, maybe 2 are catchy, but mostly are just rough sketches of tossed-away song ideas. But it's still a nice trip back with the 'old' gang, and their now 'old' sound. (i.e. guitarless).
