Customer Reviews:
this one has it all.......2007-04-16
This release from ONJ is probably my favorite album of hers. It has a variety of styles that flow together nicely from track to track.
I first got this album to get the song "Dancin' Round and Round," one of her all time best songs. It would be her last country hit for a number of years. My other favorite on here is "Totally Hot," such a fun single that always makes me feel good.
Her two big pop hits from this set, "A Little More Love" and "Deeper Than the Night," are good, also scraping the bottom of the country charts. There are some gems on here that should have been put out as singles I believe. Namely the self-penned country tune "Borrowed Time," this would have been a huge hit if it had been releasd to country radio. This song just gets me every time I hear it. Not just her voice, but the words, what the song says...it has brought me to tears many times.
Another "lost" country hit to me was "Never Enough."
"Please Don't Keep Me Waiting," the album's opener, is a disco-ish song with some cool effects and a good beat. The closer, "Gimmie Some Lovin," allows Olivia to cut loose and rock out. This is my favorite version of this song.
The album was a big hit on it's original release as well, going platinum and hitting #4 on the country charts and #7 on the pop charts.
If there was only one album in ONJ's catalog outside of a hits collection to own, this is it!
ONJ at her best.......2006-11-30
Wow, what a trip back in time! As I listen to this album, I am immediately transported back to my brother's car, listening to Olivia scream like a banshee on "Please don't keep me waiting". Certainly, the cover art, along with the release of "Grease" earlier that same year (1978), made an impression on my 13-year old mind - but now that I'm a mellower, 41 year old, I still am astounded by the quality of this album. Great music, track after track. My personal favorites are "Please don't keep me waiting", "Borrowed Time", "Dancing round and round", and "Boats against the Current". As for "Boats", Eric Carmen should be very pleased with the fine treatment that Olivia gave this beautiful song of his. Sadly, as of my writing this in Nov, 2006, the CD is STILL ONLY AVAILABLE AS AN IMPORT - what a miscarriage of justice! Anyway, it's worth the effort to secure a copy - thanks to Amazon for making it available.
Totally hot ... indeed.......2005-10-09
There is something special about this album. It still sounds great some 27 years later. Hot on the tail end of Grease, Olivia delivered this fine album in late 1978 with several songs penned by her trustworthy Aussie friend and songwriter John Farrar. John had already written tonnes of songs for Olivia over the years, and with this album he continued to shine.
The album begins on a high with the stunning "Please don't keep me waiting", before switching to a country feel with "Dancing round and round". The brilliant "A little more love" can be found on this album, as can the very catchy "Deeper than the night". The album also includes possibly John Farrar's best song ever with "Never Enough" - a gorgeous ballad that continues to send shivers up my spine all these years later.
The album contains two covers - the first is Eric Carmen's "Boat's against the current" which Olivia performs beautifully. The next (and final track) is a cover of Spencer Davis Group's "Gimme some lovin'". This version is probably the album's weakest song ... although it is still acceptable. It is just not suited to her vocals, but this is only a minor complaint.
Overall, Totally Hot is a fine album - red hot in fact. Don't be put off by the silly title (which does sound dated and cheesy I know), you will not be disappointed by this album. It can be difficult to purchase overseas, so consider buying from Australia where it is quite easy to source.
Totally Hot - Still Hot After All These Years.......2005-09-25
I was so excited to see the release of Totally Hot on CD! My lp is bascially worn out from all the play it got back in the day.
Totally Hot was Olivia's follow-up album to the Grease Sountrack and the predecessor to the enormously successful Physical. The cover art and insert were gorgeous pictures of Olivia with a great black leather jacket and pants and cowboy boots. She looks amazing.
The songs on this album really take Olivia's voice into orbit. She totally lets loose on the title track as well as Please Don't keep Me Watiting, where she hits some notes that are just crazy.
Other songs like Boats Against the Current, Deeper Than The Night and Gimme Some Lovin and very well produced and have some great orchestrations to frame Olivia's voice.
But the stand-out song for me is A Little More Love. The vocals are simply angelic and the refrains of the chorus are fabulous.
I've heard some people say that Olivia's voice is the work of great studio engineers and sound technicians. Nothing could be further from the truth! I've seen Olivia live in concert and everything you hear on her albums is what you hear live in all its glory.
I absolutely love this albuma nd highly recommend it! Many of the songs from this album are also availble on her Greatest Hits Vol 2. and Back to Basics CD's.
Music holds up throughthe years........2005-08-28
Unlike the first review naming disco as a large influence for Olivia's breakthrough album, I'd have to say it largely Rock influenced, especially evident on the opening and closing tracks, "Please Don't Keep Me Waiting" and "Gimme Some Lovin'". Both grip you immediately and squeeze your soul with the rythm and screams of Newton-John's fiery-sweet voice.
"A Little More Love" and "Talk to Me" continue the sultry rock sounds in a svelte sexy manner. The former of which was one of Olivia's biggest solo hits.
The ballads are stand outs on this 1979 lp. "Borrowed Time" coos the resignation of a scorned lover while "Boats against The Current" clearly gives in to love's indifference. "Dancing Round and Round" and "Never Enough" claim hopeful desires to move on despite the hurt from a broken heart.
Finally, the title track. A completely different sound from an era wrought with similar beats and fabricated emotion. This is the real thing. Olivia cries out loud, admits her guilt of desire and wants more! Wow!
"Totally Hot" may sound 'dated', but is anything but!

tons of fun but beware.......2006-04-21
"Totally Hot Nashville Steel Guitar" is a fun listen. While a very enjoyable disc, it has issues. For starters, the album is trapped in a hum-drum pop box. Indeed, pop is the primary treatment here -not country, rockabilly, jazz, rock or Hawaiian. For an instrumental recording, the improvisation is seldomly spirited. The arrangements are straight-forward and show little artistic interpretation. Finally, the project commits an unforgivable sin. Some songs employ synthesized drums. Unlike the hype on the CD case, there are no masters on this recording. Indeed, if the listener is looking for steel guitar music of integrity, stick with Speedy West, Buddy Emmons or Jon Rauhouse. It would seem that the issues I've chronicled would deliver the kiss of death to any disc, but somehow "Totally Hot Nashville Steel Guitar" manages to redeem itself. How? This is one fun listen! The greatest strength is the unique song choice. It's packed with tons of standards and neat TV songs like 'Night Life,' 'Sleep Walk' and 'Stand By Your Man.' The 'Star Trek Theme' is almost worth the price alone. While pop is the primary vehicle, a variety of musical styles somehow filter through. As a final strenth, let's not forget about the CD's artwork! This is a good musical choice for those instrumental enthusiasts who find too much twang in real country or those steel guitar devotees with a sense of humor.
Fresh Approach.......2003-10-05
This is one of the most unique Steel Guitar projects ever recorded. From Country to Mexican, from waltzes to Hawaiian and Movie Themes, there's a little bit of everything, played with musical mastership. Who ever thought about the Star Trek Theme being a Steel Guitar instrumental? Kayton Roberts' version of "Bells Of St. Mary" is simply beautiful, the whole recording mixes styles so well that listening to the record is pure pleasure.
Wha-Wah-Wha-Wha.......2002-02-01
Great disk. This'll show some of those Musical Expets what Country Pickers can do!!

Totally Hot........2003-02-25
"What do you think of Olivia Newton-John?" a mysterious woman once asked me. At the time, spring of 1975, I had never seen Olivia and had only heard a few of her early hits on the radio and I imagined a very young girl, so I answered "She's O.K., She ain't that hot." Three years later I finally got a good look at her in the film "Grease". She is a whole lot more than just O.K.
Olivia Newton-John is in fact Totally Hot!
"Totally Hot" was released in 1978, six months after Olivia was transformed from pristine virgin to seductive vixen in the end of the film "Grease". The virgin-turns-vixen character Olivia played turns up on the cover of this album. Her name is prominently displayed on the cover and the leather outfit works well with the tan background. The mysterious woman with the kerchief found on the inside cover completes the fantasy makeover of Olivia Newton-John for this album.
John Farrar wrote three songs on "Totally Hot" especially for Olivia. It is his understanding of her which make this album so heartfelt and magical. His grasp of the pop format is worthy of note. His songs are elegant and perfect in their constructiion.
"Please Don't Keep Me Waiting", with Olivia's direct and heart-wrenching vocal is elegant and perfect in its construction. This symetri between chorus and verse make for a beautiful song.
"Dancin' ''Round And 'Round" suggests that Olivia has indeed grown and matured. "Where did my innocence go? How was a young girl to know?" She asks. The song went top three December of 1978.
"Talk To Me" Olivia's own writing and vulnerable rendition is exquisite, haunting and proves that she is more than just another pretty face. A prominent saxaphone adds an air of sophistication to this lovely ballad.
"Borrowed Time" , its enough to make you want to cry.
"A Little More Love", will pick you back up again. God! When you hear those words from her...tell me you don't feel a thing. It's enough for me to feel adrenalin or something.
The album is quality stuff and peaked at #7 and went platinum selling over a million copies. It is a work of art that has stood the test of time.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome energy and musicianship!.......2004-09-18
I have listened to this album quite a few times since I got it and yet I still can't say what other band it sounds like. The music and lyrics are extremely accessible - rock/pop at it's best! - yet it is so fresh that it can't be lumped into any of the typical music categories. I've seen the reviews that reference Lenny Kravitz, David Bowie, U2, Prince, etc. but I don't think this album sounds like any of those artists. However, it definitely has the quality and energy of these great artists. It seems like Roy Ashen has some cool stuff going on - you must check out the music for yourself!
Very Good CD.......2004-09-13
Very Good music! I saw an article in a magazine on the CD and had not heard of him before this week. Beautiful and intense music. The CD has been playing in my car all weekend.
Awesome songs - great CD!.......2004-09-11
This is a great CD with top notch songwriting. If you're new to Roy Ashen's music...I guess I'd describe him as a cross between bowie, prince and maybe dashboard confessional. I was particularly impressed with the songs Holding On, I Miss You, and Gasoline. A great CD by an up & coming star!
Amazing Songwriter - rockin' songs!.......2004-09-08
Heard about Roy in a music magazine and I've been looking for the new CD. The songs are awesome - fans of Bowie, Dashboard and Prince will probably all find something valuable here. The lyrics are really good too. Great voice. Refreshing to hear new music of this quality!
