Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13
This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.
Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28
Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.
"essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16
When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Oh, Good Grief! isn't Vince Guaraldi's classic piano-trio recordings of his "Peanuts" favorites--for those, try the soundtrack to A Boy Named Charlie Brown. But it is a 1968 "re-imagining" of several of those favorites with Guaraldi on both piano and electric harpsichord, and Eddie Duran's electric guitar joining Carl Burnett's drums and Stanley Gilbert's bass. The sound is unfamiliar but the groove is unmistakably Guaraldi's, and it'll grow on you after your ear adjusts. For purists, the "Great Pumpkin Waltz" and "Rain, Rain Go Away" are a return to Guaraldi's trademark acoustic lyricism. It's only 28 minutes, unfortunately. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Not bad, for a plagiarist.......2006-12-22
First of all, this is great stuff; these arrangements aren't as far from the versions heard in the cartoons as some reviewers would have you think. The electric harpsichord does give a couple of the pieces a somewhat dated sound, but it works oddly well in the beautiful and underrated "You're in Love, Charlie Brown." I highly recommend this album to anyone who likes emotive, catchy instrumental music, especially if you lean toward jazz piano. Vince's ivories are mixed loudest throughout, thankfully, and the whole collection's a delight.
Granted, the mixing's not very good (I'm thinking primarily of the high level of hiss), but it's pretty old, after all; I made myself a noise-reduced version of the disc using Nero Wave Editor 2. But this is certainly better than the noisy, chair-scraping, musician-coughing mix on the Charlie Brown Suite, another CD that doesn't have the original arrangements.
It's not Coltrane or Satie, but it's terrific piano music and it leaves you in a great mood. I admit I don't understand why nobody ever busted Guaraldi on "Rain, Rain, Go Away," which is of course a gorgeous piece of music, but for a good reason: It's a direct rip-off of the Debussy piece "Clair De Lune." The CD insert explains that all of the songs were written by Vince Guaraldi. This is not the case. I'm not sure why he got away with this, especially considering that the Debussy melody is so relatively popular. In fact, it casts a suspicious light on the rest of Vince's so-called originals.
Recommended but not entirely original -- which of course doesn't ruin the pleasure of listening, in the abstract.
Vince Guaraldi does perform on this. But it does not sound like his Trio, at all........2006-06-21
After enjoying the Charlie Brown Christmas for several years, and Boy Named Charlie Brown more recently, I found the Good Grief CD to be so completely different and unpleasant, that I could not even listen to the whole CD, and will not be keeping it.
One of the Best.......2006-05-20
I personally love this CD! I don't understand why it only has 3 stars (to date) I listen to this CD at chistmas time, or in the winter, or just any time I want to feel calm and happy. I own over 4,500 albums and this is one of my favorites!
Not what I expected, but not bad........2006-01-06
In my opinion, the amazing thing about Guaraldi and the music he scored for the various Peanuts television shows was his ability to compose music that, like the comic itself, was both sophisticated and still innocent. I purchased the A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS album by Guaraldi and realized that I was just as fond of the music in the Peanuts television specials as I was the story, perhaps more so.
I later came across this album and purchased it on the spot. I, like the other reviewers was caught off guard with the additional instruments included in these recordings. However, Guaraldi & players still are able to create that sophisticated & innocent sound that allows listeners to return to their youth. One of my favorite selections is "You're in Love Charlie Brown".
Lastly, the music does have that late "60's" sound to it, as it should since it was recorded in 1968. Most people identify that time period as a time of change. Even though that time is associated with War, protests, civil change, the sexual revolution, political unrest, and other such things, this album is able to simplify things, calm listeners and remind them that not everything needs to be complicated. Just like the Peanuts Gang, in print and film, is able to do.
Different versions, but still good.......2005-03-25
As the last reviewer pointed out, these are different versions of Vince Guaraldi's selections for 5 different Charlie Brown specials (CB Christmas, CB's All Stars, Great Pumpkin, You're In Love CB and He's Your Dog CB). As for the harpsichord, I have mixed feelings about it (keeping in mind that as this album originally came out in 1968, that instrument was popularly used in the 1960's, like in the Yardbirds' "For Your Love" and the Doors' "Love Me 2 Times"). It sounds pretty on "You're In Love, Charlie Brown" (btw, there is a version in the actual special of the same name that does feature the harpsichord) and "Peppermint Patty," but sounds annoying on this version of "Linus and Lucy" and "Red Baron." It sounds cool, though, on "Oh Good Grief" and sounds ok on It's Your Dog, CB." 2 of the songs (my personal favorites in this CD) "Rain Rain Go Away" and "The Great Pumpkin Waltz" don't feature it at all. "GP Watlz" and "Red Baron" 1st appeared in It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (another rendition of GP Waltz can be heard in You're a Good Sport, Charlie Brown). The guitarist Eddie Duran proves to be a talented guitarist here, adding more of a bluesy feel to some of the songs. "Rain Rain Go Away" was featured in CB's All Stars (later featured in It's Arbor Day, Charlie Brown). "In Love..." and "Peppermint Patty" were introduced in You're In Love, Charlie Brown. "It's Your Dog" was featured in He's Your Dog, CB (and sounds like a Linus and Lucy rewrite). Of course, "Linus and Lucy" is featued in most of the early specials (if you don't recognize the title, you'll recognize the music). "Oh Good Grief" was originally written for a documentary entitled A Boy Named CB (no relation to the movie of the same name). My main complaint is that the album clocks in at less than 30 minutes. You'd think there would be some bonus tracks on this. Oh well, this is the only place to get most of these tracks. If you don't mind different versions from some of the famous CB specials we enjoyed, by all means, get it. Other Vince Guaraldi albums recommended include A Boy Named Charlie Brown, Charlie Brown's Holiday Hits and A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Amazon.com essential recording
These quartets (and who else but the Kronos Quartet should record them) represent Schnittke at his polystylistic best. The Kronos Quartet captures the essence of Schnittke's multi-hued textures, but these are not friendly works. In fact, they are quite foreboding--but then so are the quartets of Shostakovich and Bartók. This is a two-disc set that also includes the brief "Canon in Memory of I. Stravinsky" and Collected Songs. Schnittke's best music contains its own instruction manual. Listen long enough and you'll get it. --Paul Cook
Customer Reviews:
Technicals and musical form.......2006-01-11
Both aspects of music are necessary to make a satsifiing performance. The Kronos achieves excellence in both levels. I disagree with the reviewer who says "mechanical excercise" in performance.
I own the Shostakovich sq's with the Borodin/Melodyia/1970's recording, and can compare this performance to that legendary group/recording.IOW the essence of the music comes forth from the instruments, the music is alive. "leaves the instruments"
I was told by a friend from a classical music chat forum, Good music guide, that this Kronos was not his recommended choice.
But my research indicated otherwise. So I "took the chance" and ordered it. To my surprise this recording more than met my hopes for a fine recording.
As a reviewer mentioned, if you are familiar with Bartok and Shostakovich's sq's, the Schnittke will be a welcomed addition to your chamber listenings.
The russians have fully acknowledged Schnittke as Shostakovich's true heir. Something that syruck me at first hearing hiw syms 3/Rozhdestvensy, 4/Rozhdestvensky, and especially Schnittke's incredible Concerto grosso4/Sym5 (goes by that name , as it botha sym and a concerto grosso). On the BIS label.
Schnittke, one of the last genius in composition, beginning with Bach. Music of a sacred nature, food for the soul of modern man.
EDIT:
Now after a few months of knowing this set, I'm convinced of the deep devotion of the Kronos in the Schnittke.
Deeply committed performance in these chamber works of high genius.
As much as I love the Bartok and Shostakovich sq's, I' might have to say the Schnittke offer even more.
Highly recommended to all Schnittke fans.
A wonderful set.......2002-03-06
I adore this recording. The Kronos do an excellent job of playing the heart out of these anguished and soulful pieces. (I heard them perform all 4 quartets in one concert recital, back in 1994 or so.) Schnittke wrote amazingly for strings, especially violins. In fact, I can't think of another late twentieth century composer who wrote so intensely and idiomatically for string instruments. This is like music for live wires. I was interested to read Steve Reich's liner notes for his recent recording of Triple Quartet, where he cites the Agitato movment of the Second Quartet as an inspiration. I love that movement also, there is nothing like it. I would not be without the performance of the Second Quartet that was recorded by the Beethoven Quartet back in the early 80s, available on Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab at one time, but the Kronos are no mere make-do. A tremendous musical event is on offer here. All we need now is a Kronos recordng of Schnittke's wonderful Piano Quintet! (Perhaps with Aji Takahashi on piano?)
masterful anguish and dread.......2001-09-10
This is a powerful, harrowing cycle of string quartets, beautifully played by the Kronos Quartet, and recorded for Nonesuch. The First, from 1966, defiantly uses serialism, and this contributed to Schnittke's subsequent dissident status with the regime. He was forced to make his living doing film scores, which for some reason was allowed. The Second Quartet, from 1980, shows a remarkable continuity with the First, despite the long interval. It is the Third Quartet (and we have here the recording previously issued on WINTER WAS HARD in 1987) from 1983 that marks Schnittke's turn to "polystylism," with references to Beethoven, Wagner and Shostakovich. Less harsh, this piece captures as well as any Schnittke's basic affinity with Mahler and Shostakovich, as opposed to the more radical innovations in 20th century music. The 35-minute Fourth Quartet is masterful, full of the anguish and dread so characteristic of Schnittke.
This is a splendid set that stands alongside the finest interpretations of Bartok, Shostakovich, Kurtag, Ligeti, and Carter. I consider Schnittke to be one of the best composers of the late 20th century -- see my ALFRED SCHNITTKE'S TRAGICOMIC SOUNDWORLD for more recordings and reviews.
a masterpiece........2000-06-29
i know nothing of Schnittke's music. i only know what moves me. these quartets move me. the Kronos Quartet are masters of interpreting 20th century music. and they do a magnificent job here, bringing Schnittke's notes off paper and into the air. It can be intense and then in a milli-second turn clam. the composition is amazing. Schnittke uses dissonance to paint a portrait so vivid one can almost see the music floating through the air. a must for lovers of 20th century music and a must for those wanting to expand their ear.
Kronos doesn't understand Schnittke!.......1999-11-04
Listening to the Kronos quartet playing Schnittke's Fourth Quartet is purely an intellectual exercice. In their seriousness they don't seem to capture the emotional spirit of the late composer. Compare it to the intelligent, emotional rendition of the Fourth Quartet by the Alban Berg Quartet (dedicatee of the work) and you will measure the ocean between them... Kronos should smile for a change! On another note, the CD's booklet is interesting and fun too!
Again listen to the alternative: Alban Berg Quartet for the Fourth and Borodine for the Third... The discovery is worth spending a bit more time and effort!

Customer Reviews:
Cantus has done it again!.......2003-12-07
Cantus has done it again with ...Against the Dying of the Light. This CD although much more secular and sacred, still demonstrates the power of music through singing. This album takes the listener back to some the very roots of choral music with compositions dating back to fifteenth century. Cantus brings out all despair and joy of the texts in ...Against the Dying of the Light. Although most of the pieces are sung in Latin, a story of greif and sarrow to consolation and joy is clearly told. All avid choral singers must have this CD. The "Two Laments on Dylan Thomas" are simply profound. You will not be dissapointed with this CD. This male choral group is second to none!
Wonderful.......2002-12-31
As a vocalist with a love for male a cappella, Cantus has struck my fancy in numerous ways. This album is a WONDERFUL example of their artistry. Their rendition of Randall Thompson's Alleluia is stunning, as are all of the other tracks. Truly worth the purchase.

Simply Amazing.......2004-01-02
I first heard of Hikari Oe many years ago when he was featured on a news program. I was so moved by his story, that I went out to buy his CD. I fell in love. I am so amazed that this man who can do nothing for himself, can write such beautiful music. He is simply amazing. This is a wonderful cd from a wonderful man. Don't miss it!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Another example of great playing.......2007-01-10
This CD of Sergei's playing is very nice. Him and his sister are a fine duo that can make very beautiful music with just the Piano and Trumpet/Flugelhorn. This CD shows Sergei's expressive and lyrical side rather than his great technical ability. The music on this CD is something you would want to sit in front of a fire and really relax. I would recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys Classical music, not just to trumpet players.
Elegie with a trumpet.......2007-01-09
Looking for Elegie. It was the correct piece, but I would have preferred it done with violins etc. Elegie was my mother's favorite piece.
Poetic.......2000-06-07
Sergei Nakariakov is one of the greatest trumpet players alive today. His repertoire is enormous and keeps growing. He is featured here on a disc of songs and lieder from the vocal repertoire. Who needs words? His trumpet speaks as clear as any voice, and is as touching as any words could be. The music is brilliant anyway. He someone makes it all a little more special.

Amazon.com essential recording
Don't get too comfortable with this disc's opening minutes, which sound convincingly like a well-tuned consort of viols performing two short pieces by Machaut and Tye. These two works from the 14th and 16th centuries quickly give way to a piece from 1997 by David Lamb. Then come Arvo Part, Harry Partch, John Cage, and even Moondog, a.k.a. Louis Hardin. Additional instruments come and go- -harmonium, bagpipe, zhong ruan, nyckelharpa, drum--all of which complement and enhance the string sounds. Later, we hear music by Hildegard von Bingen, Perotin, and even Purcell. Most of the selections from early composers are arrangements by the Kronos Quartet and others, but it's a tribute to the recording's producers that in spite of the music's diversity, everything works together to make a coherent, cohesive, intellectually, and musically challenging program. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
one of their best.......2005-04-14
If you like simple, string quartet music as much as I do, then you've got to listen to this. It is a generous 68 minutes of plaintive music--no discontinuities and surpises like on their Black Angels recording. It is all slow and mournful.
I loved this CD!.......2002-11-02
When I was listening to MSN I came across it. I love Early Music and they had a Radio station that was playing it. I decided to listen to it. So as I was lisitening to it I came across the song Collected Songs Where Every Verse Is Filled With Grief. That is the besty song I ever heard in a long time. I like the other songs but this one really spoke to me. It was quite moving if I might say.
Not as early as you might think.......2000-06-07
Yes, there is "old" music on this disc. But works in olden style by John Cage, Arvo Part, et al are also present. Quite a challenging program on the listener - but rewarding as well. I am particularly found of Kronos' setting of Alfred Shnittke's "Collected Songs Where Every Verse is Filled With Grief". Very eclectic recording performed with usual finesse of the Kronos Quartet - and some guests.
Pleonastic.......2000-03-10
Kronos Quarter has been an agile and versatile instrument in the hands of modern composers. It has (re)interpreted music from many sources in a coherent way, thus creating a very distinctive sound. This album offers a mixed program of composers, juxtaposing the modern and the antique. The thesis of the album is (I think) that early composers are surprisingly palatable to modern sensibilities, and that they are close in spirit to a vast array of contemporary musicians. Also, it seems that the bond linking all these authors is a certain state of affliction; hence the subtitle of the album "lachrymae antiquae", ancient tears. Yet, overall, I found this a pretentious album, even in its use of latin. After so many years of philologically accurate renditions of the early masters, performed on period intruments, the operation of K.Q. sounds at least inappropriate if not even a bit obnoxious. It often seems that they are sacrificing the original intentions of the authors to the altar of this "modernity" thesis. The listener should judge by him/herself.
Summing up, I would just say that this is first of all a K.Q. album "inspired by" early music. I would just point out that it doesn't add much to the understanding neither of Machaut & co., nor of K.Q., which is still a great ensemble.
a good one.......1999-12-02
Who can say, as of now, how much of the music the KQ plays will fall, deservedly or not, by the wayside and how much of it will continue for the ages? At any rate, this CD is rewarding. I like the mix of quirky pieces with the staid, even if the title "Early Music" is misleading (since few original instruments are utilized in this record). Fine work; highly recommended.

WHAT A SAD SONG!.......2006-06-06
GRIEF NEVER GROWS OLD IS A VERY SAD SONG EVERYTIME I HEAR IT IT MAKES ME SO SAD!
BARRY & ROBIN SOUND GREAT ON IT SO DOES THE OTHER SINGERS ON IT!

Touching grief.......2005-12-15
For anyone who understands the depth of their own personal grief, this cd helps you remember. But, surprisingly, it is also empowering to remember the universality of grief. Both track 1, with the two surviving Gibb Brothers and the track 3, the melding of the children's voices, were powerful and touching. The orchestal version on track 2 was only okay.
I'm glad that I have this in my collection. I wish the recordings were longer, though.
Happy With Purchase........2005-08-20
I purchased this CD having heard two versions of it on "Classic FM TV" for the first time. The first of the three versions by a host of famous performers is not bad.The second and third versions, orchestral and then choral, are much better and the reason why I purchased this CD.
Aid for tsunami relief.......2005-03-11
I bought this album from AmazonUK as soon as it was released, after having heard the title track online.
It didn't surprise me to hear Barry & Robin Gibb lend their voices to the project, as they have long been involve with many charity functions throughout their career. Other musicians lending their time and voices include Boy George, Sir Cliff and Brian Wilson.
The album has 3 tracks, with different variations of the "Grief Never Grows Old" song. The first is the one that I had heard online the day of the album's release - the voices blend throughout the melody to give a message of hope through loss.
The second version is entirely instrumental and shows the depth of emotion by the very tune itself.
The 3rd and final cut is a chorale version, which is quite good also.
The proceeds of the album are being donated to assist those who lost their homes, possessions and families as a result of the tsunami that struck along the Indian Ocean during the holiday season.
Where is Jon Anderson & Rick Wakeman??.......2005-03-06
The "Yes World" web site made note of this release having Jon Anderson & Rick Wakeman contributing on this "Tsunami Relief" effort. Being a huge "YES" fan I sent off for the release. I've just received it and have played it over and over numerous times.....where is Jon's vocals and where is Rick's "Korg Synthesiser" part??? The song is O.K. and I guess my $$$ has gone to the relief effort but I was hoping for at least 1 line where I could tell Jon was singing and some kind of riff where you could tell Rick was playing. Oh well....again "Yes" gets no respect. If you're a Yes fan....pass on this!!!!!

Was there someone who sang "Rusalka" more beautifully?.......2002-06-21
I don't think so. The Arts label is to be commended for keeping Popp's recordings available at such a reasonable price. Besides the wonderful offerings of Mozart and Verdi here, the album's price is returned tenfold by the gorgeous rendition of "O Silver Moon" from Dvorak's Rusalka.
An authoritative Lucia Popp compilation!!!.......2002-01-26
This album contains some of the most incredible opera arias sung by one of my personal favorite singers -- Lucia Popp. Her felicity of expression and facility in the department of vocal fireworks stumbles me to this day. Sadly she was taken away from us at a young age but she left her imprint on history with her countless recordings during the prime of her career. The best songs on the CD and ones I'd argue could be authoritative versions of not only the performer, but the works are "Depuis le jour" by Charpentier and "Caro Nome" from Rigoletto by Verdi. It's a short CD and it's an import, but it's worth every penny for these two recordings alone. Her talent is unmatched with flawless trills and cadenzas -- her renditions by far supercede that of Callas, Sutherland, and Bonney. This European treasure will never be forgotten.
Exemplary singing!.......2000-05-08
Lucia Popp recorded this recital in the early 1980s, when she was beginning to adapt her voice away from coloratura roles into the lyric repertoire. This record is a complete success vocally and artistically. The voice is silvery and pure, yet with a pleasing astringency to it. She handles the coloratura passages with aplomb but is even more impressive in the middle voice, where she is beautifully communicative, caressing each word with the value and weight it deserves. And she does this idiomatically in four languages! The Mozart, Verdi, and Weber arias are standouts, but the two Czech arias are even more special. Popp was a native speaker of Slovak, closely related to Czech, so her pronunciation is deliciously idiomatic. At mid-price this should be in every opera collection!
Glorious Popp.......1999-11-26
Lucia Popp covered a lot of territory in this recording from the early eighties. Her Mozart is well-known, of course, but other composers like Dvorak and Massenet are also represented. I've heard stronger, more voluptuous voices, but Popp's singing still impresses me with its naturalness and sentience. There's a recognizable character in her voice that imprints itself on everything she sings. It's not unlike hearing the voice of an old friend. Warm, lyrical, and above all, tender.
