Home of "Smoke on the Water" and "Highway Star," Machine Head blends proto-metal density with epic arrangements, resulting in a record that's far more grandiose than the sum of its parts. --Jon Wiederhorn

4 out of 5 stars Classic Rock Collection.......2007-07-04

This is a must have to round out your classic rock collection. Highway Star and Smoke on the Water were big hits in the early 70s. Really enjoy listening Highway Star while riding my Harley.

5 out of 5 stars Heavy Metal Classic!.......2007-02-08

Deep Purple hit their peak with this one...Every song's a winner.
Too bad "Smoke on the water" gets so much airplay, at the expense of the other songs. Did you EVER hear "Lazy" on the radio? Blackmore, Gillan, Paice, Glover & Lord - The whole was greater than the sum of its parts.
The drumming is unbelieveable on this album!

5 out of 5 stars Do I even need to go "In-Depth"?.......2007-01-07

Seriously, 3 of the 7 songs on this album are classic hard rock anthems! Smoke On The Water, Highway Star, and Space Truckin'! Nuff said!!!! Deep Purple pretty much invented heavy metal. It was either them or Ozzy.

3 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure.......2006-11-29

Best hard rock album ever? Uh, NO. I'm sorry, but I fail to see what the big deal about this record is. Smoke on the Water's cool (obviously), and I like Highway Star, Lazy and Space Truckin' too. But this is a disposable album, I mean listen to songs like Maybe I'm a Leo, Never Before or Pictures of Home and you'll see what I mean. Ritchie Blackmore lacks the creativity, sheer virtuosity, and personality of Jimi Hendrix, but he's a passable guitarist, and he has a way with a riff (Smoke on the Water, for instance). The rest of the group's faceless, though, and the record offers no surprises. with the exception of the harmonica solo on Lazy. I'll admit that caught me off-guard. And the less that can be said about the lyrics, the better. But if you're willing to look past all those flaws (and trust me, there are lots), you'll find it's a fun headbanging indulgence meant for occasional spins.
Recommended listening for hard rock fans (I hate the term metal - it calls to mind those awful hair-metal, death-metal and nu-metal bands)
Back in Black (AC/DC)
Appetite for Destruction (Guns 'n' Roses)
Paranoid (Black Sabbath)
Houses of the Holy (Led Zeppelin)
Are You Experienced? (Jimi Hendrix)
Disraeli Gears (Cream)
All are miles ahead of this.

5 out of 5 stars Simply The Best.......2006-11-21

Ahh, Machine Head! I remember when this came out. I bought the cassette, and within 4 years had literally played it to shreds. Then I bought another cassette. It was one of the first cd's I ever bought, but the first cd was pretty poor sound quality. I found a German cd at a used record store, and the sound quality was excellent. Then, there was the 25th anniversary cd, which was top notch, too. All in all, I figure Deep Purple owes me a gold record for the amount of money I've spent on Machine Head. And it's been worth every penny.

"Highway Star" is a great way to start an album Awesome. All of the songs are great here. "Smoke On The Water" and "Space Truckin'" are the popular ones, but I've always been partial to "Maybe I'm A Leo."

This is one awesome album. If you don't own it, why not?

Deep Purple were on the eve of breaking wide open when the quintet made Machine Head, a record that launched a heap of hard-rock hits, not to mention the bulk of the live album Made in Japan. No fewer than three classics were unveiled here: "Highway Star," "Space Truckin'," and their biggest hit ever, "Smoke on the Water." Ritchie Blackmore's crunchy guitar was becoming the group's trademark, and the throb that opens "Smoke on the Water" went miles in concretizing his place in the pantheon of 1970s guitar deities. But the story here is the second disc, which is composed of remixes by Roger Glover that introduce long-dormant, more-energized variations on the originals and revive separate solos. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great album..and a greater one........2007-02-26

This album was one of the first hard rock albums I ever heard. I found a cassette tape of this one day and listened to it. I was only 13 at the time, but I loved it! It stayed in my tape collection for years. I had bought the original CD and now I've bought this. Is it worth it? YES!

Disc one is the original album and its never sounded better. Needless to say, i have sold my original CD of this. The second disc is remixes. There is a noticeable difference especially in the bass and the drums. The vocals sound much cleaner and the music is more balanced and a bit deeper.

'Highway Star' has always been a great song and in its remixed version sounds much better. The beginning intro here should really have been left on the original. There is only one small bit of melody during the solo here that i wish they would have kept in. And its good to hear that the cymbal crash on the end has been left to ring out. The original always seemed to be get clipped off a bit too soon.
'Maybe I'm A Leo' is a bit of a slower song and has a great riff. I remember listening to this intro 100 times when i first heard this because the drums sounded so strange and off beat to me. When my ears finally got used to it, I loved it.
'Pictures Of Home' is my favorite. The lyrics were always incredible and the remixed version here is much better. 'Never Before' always seemed like a weak song to me. It's a bit too much like a pop song and why this was ever considered as a single is beyond me. A decent song, but not as great as the others.

'Smoke On The Water' is, of course, the best known song here. This remix features a different guitar solo, but i still prefer the original. There is a reason this solo was replaced. But it is interesting to hear nonetheless.
'Lazy' had a great organ solo intro that eventually turns into a great blues song. This is another highlight of the album.
'Space Truckin' is a bit of a simple song, but it does have interesting lyrics and this remix makes it sound like a new song.

This CD is a must buy. The remixes for the most part are superior to the original and this is just a great hard rock album anyway. Buy this. This is a five star album all the way!

5 out of 5 stars If You're Looking for the Best Sounding Machine Head..........2007-01-02

A hybrid SACD version is also available here on Amazon. It will play on standard CD players as well as SACD players, and the standard CD layer sounds even better than this anniversary edition. I have both since I want the best sounding Machine Head available and the second disc of Roger Glover remixes in this anniversary edition. This is a good sounding remaster of the original album, but it can't hold a candle to the hybrid remaster.

5 out of 5 stars a classic made even better........2006-12-17

Machine Head needs no introduction. It is THE album with THE song. You know which one I'm talking about. Anyway, the first disc is the original album along with When A Blind Man Cries, an excellent bluesy B-side, and quadrophonic (whatever that means) remixes of Lazy and Maybe I'm a Leo. I didn't notice much difference between those remixes and the originals. The first disc would be worth five stars by itself, as anyone who's heard it knows.

But then there's the second disc, with each of the eight songs remixed by Roger Glover, DP's longtime bassist. There are some pretty noticeable changes, but they aren't bad by any means. On most of the songs, you get to hear the band warming up for a few seconds before doing the song, and the original faded out endings are played through till the band stops. Oh yeah, there are a few new guitar solos in there too. The new version of Smoke on the Water beats the old one by a mile, and I really like that I can hear Ian Gillan screaming at the end of Highway Star. And don't forget there's a bunch of liner notes detailing the story of how the band made the album.

Buy this. If you just own the original version, you're missing out.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for any fan of hard rock music........2006-10-16

Deep Purple's Machine Head is essential for any fan of hard rock music.

Buying this two disc version is worth every penny. To hear these songs remixed was amazing. It made the album sound as if they recorded it just yesterday. Simply stunning!

Highlights: The remix, of course. Get it and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Machine Head in 3D...Better than the Original!.......2006-04-20

The remastered disc one is an improvement over the vinyl and nonremastered versions as the bass is more prominent and punchier and the high end is crisper and cleaner. But the story of this release is disc two. There is a VERY, VERY NOTICEABLE improvement over the original. I have often criticized Roger Glover for his inadvertent attempts at sabotaging Deep Purple albums such as House of Blue Light or The Battle Rages On with his flat, lousy production where all the instruments were compressed together so that none could be heard distinctly. But I have to give credit where credit is due. Glover's remixing job on disc two has to be the best remixing job I have ever heard. Each and every instrument can be heard with such crystal clarity that it gives a three-dimensional quality to the sound. When there is a solo, whether it be guitar, keyboards, harmonica, drums or bass, the instrument just JUMPS out of the speakers at you. It sounds as if the group is performing "live" in front of you. And there are nuances in the music I have never heard before, such as the strange, ghostly, slightly echoey, slightly reverbed effect in the guitar solo in Highway Star. I swear I can hear Ian Gillan's high-range screaming in the backround as Highway Star is ending. The explosive drum solo in Space Trucking comes at you from all directions and will leave your head spinning. The tape hiss and the slightly muffled high end have been cleaned up. The vocals, which on all previous versions had at times been mixed a little weakly so that the lyrics were not always decipherable, can all be heard clearly here, but they haven't been boosted so much that the overall mix sounds out of whack. The power of the drums can be felt with force and the high end is so crisp and lifelike it is as if Ian Paice is bashing the cymbals right in your face. In short, this is a PERFECT remixing job. Disc two is worth its weight in gold. It is rare that a remix adds such a clarity and depth to the music that it is far superior to the original in every respect. Forget about the vinyl or nonremastered versions. I have always liked this album very much, but only through this disc two remix do I now fully appreciate what an awesome and powerful album this is as a whole new dimension has been added to the sound. Please, get this NOW. You will wonder how you ever got by with the slightly muffled, slightly muddy previous versions of this album all these years.

Looking for the commercial versions of the songs you loved most from the tribal rock opera, HAIR? This CD is the one you are looking for! The only other one you will need is the Best of the 5th Dimension. (Why "Aquarius" got left off this AM Gold CD is beyond me....)

5 out of 5 stars 1969 - The Greatest Year In Popular Music?.......2006-06-20

If compilations were an accurate measure of the greatness of a particular year in popular this Time-Life disc would make an excellent argument that 1969 may have been the greatest year in American popular music in the 20th century. Complilations will always be lacking for one reason or another. For example, on this discs there are no British bands represented. Neither are the West Coast superstars (Doors, Hendrix, CSN, Airplane...the list goes on). But even with the omission of those giants this is a great compilation. It is strongly evocative of the late 60's, Good Morning Starshine and Hair (from the musical of the same name), the songwriting talent of Laura Nyro (Wedding Bell Blues), some solid Motown (Someday We'll Be Together & What Does It Take), Canadian pop (the Guess Who & Jessie Colin Young), Midwest Psychedelic (Crimison & Clover)and more. If you were really a kid listening to AM radio you will know and appreciate each of these songs. And that's why '69 was such a great year for music, even the left-overs qualify as classic rock-pop.

5 out of 5 stars The 60's rock.......2006-06-08

I love 60's and 70's music the best of everything. I grew up with it because my folks are older than most parents.1969 is a great year of music with smile a little smile for me as my favroite song. I don't like the music the kids like to today it is awful. Rap no way. Heavy Metal yuck. It is time for the oldies to be the only thing on the radio agian.

5 out of 5 stars Purple's crowning achievement.......2001-08-10

Deep Purple could easily have been as big as Led Zeppelin. They were certainly as talented. If only Ritchie Blackmore had got on better with Ian Gillan and Roger Glover, this classic line-up could have stayed together for a few more years, and clocked up true supergroup status. And earned an awful lot of money.

But an inability to make compromises often goes with the territory of being highly talented. Listening again to these remastered anniversary editions of 'In Rock', 'Fireball' and 'Machine Head' together with 'Rainbow Rising', I am strongly persuaded by the argument that Ritchie Blackmore has been rock's greatest post-Hendrix guitarist.

This was a re-master I had to buy. 'Machine Head' was the first album I ever bought. For several months it was the only album I owned, so I played it to death. Every piece of music brought into my boarding school had to be approved by the headmaster. At the time, only 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' had been approved. Rather than ask permission and get the album confiscated, I sneaked 'Machine Head' in to the school, intending to play it to myself on headphones. But other boys -- we were 13-year-olds -- wanted their own copies, so a number of crude speaker-to-microphone recordings were made. That summer, the sounds of 'Highway Star' and 'Pictures of Home' echoed around the subterranean cavern that was called the Model Club. Fortunately this was not the era when hard-rock bands felt obliged to insert gratuitous four-letter words into their lyrics. Despite the musical style of 'Machine Head' not nothing like the classical stuff that our teachers wanted us to aspire to, the album was not banned. Strangely, 'Smoke on the Water' was NOT one of the tracks we paid much attention to. It was only when I moved on the next term to another school -- one where boys could learn the guitar -- that I became aware of the legendary status this track was acquiring.

This 2CD set throws up an immediate dilemma: which to listen to first -- the Remixes or the Remasters? I know every note of the original album, so the Remasters were my first port of call. The recordings are clearer, but there's no particular revelation.

What is stunning -- and this is the reason why every Purple fan has to own this version -- are Roger Glover's Remixes. Normally I am suspicious of remixes. Today remixes are usually an excuse for another producer to cut and splice, re-order chorus and verse, and put down several new layers of synth and drum machine. Glover has done none of that, but he has brought a fantastic clarity to the recordings. Most tracks last a little longer, because Glover has left in an additional bar of music at the opening or at the very end. Two tracks, including 'Smoke on the Water', have completely different solos.

In listening to the remixes, you feel very close to the stage of the Grand Hotel, Montreux. There is a tremendous live feel to the recordings. Extraordinarily for a band whose members couldn't abide each other, the level of empathy between the musicians is oustanding. The interplay between Blackmore and Lord is wonderful. (Now at last with the sonic clarity of the remixes I can just about be sure which bits are played by Lord and which by Blackmore.) Even Glover's bass solo on 'Pictures of Home' sparkles.

Ian Gillan may have been casual about the writing of the lyrics, but Purple's music has lasted because the band put so much into the development of each track. I found that it took many listens to fully appreciate all the nuances of their finest recordings. That was, after all, part of the appeal of progressive music. This anniversary set is a fitting testament to the greatest progressive hard rock band I have known.

3 out of 5 stars Clearing the air part 3.......2007-06-07

First time was White Light/White Heat...next was
quitting the velvets.

And then there came Metal Machine Music.

I've listened to parts of this record a number of times and have always felt something different each time. However I believe like most "art", it was meant to affect different people in different ways. And it might never affect you the same way twice. Think Nine Inch Nails meets John Cage meets MC5 meets LaMont Young. And I don't mean just bits of those artists separately and the influences thereof, but rather all of them playing simultaneously at extreme ear shattering volume. The affect of listening to this on headphones is enough to inflict psychotic reaction. It is NOT music to do housework to. Unless that housework involves demolition.

Having said that, I also believe that MMM was recorded for 1 specific reason. Lou was trying to "clear the air" of all the quote, unquote "sally can't dance, your rock 'n'roll animal". Which I think means all the fans of those records and others like them. He was casting those fans aside much the same way that Little Richard threw his jewels in the river or Brian Wilson stopped recording and writing music at the height of his popularity. All probably felt a certain amount of pressure, both from record companies as well as the fans to keep churning out the same product over and over with new and different wrapping.
Many times that gets to be the disillusionment of rock stars. The need to sell "product" as opposed to creating music that means something and has relevance to themselves and their fans. The rock music world rises, falls and changes much too quickly for most stars to retain their shine and fans become impatient for their favorite star to produce the next music masterpiece that resembles and continues the original greatness that they achieved early in their career.

Most groups or even solo artists don't make it past 2 or 3 records because the fanbase moves on to newer, shinier versions. So what Lou did was to circumvent the eventual fanbase collapse and took an axe to his own career by releasing quite possibly the most unlistenable record ever produced. And just to make sure the destruction was complete he recorded 4 sides of it and put a cover on that made it seem like this might be a live recording to entice those leftover Rock'n'roll Animal fans. Lou knew that the shine on his star was quickly becoming faded and felt he still had much more creativity to sell, so he destroyed himself publicly, and then quickly re-invented himself with a new record label and new, self-controlled image. At the same time he was recording and releasing MMM he was planning a major career move to take control of the production and release of his music, instead of leaving it to the whims of the record company and the producers that were assigned to him, as happened early in his career.
I, for one, preferred Lou Reed music with a capable producer such as Bob Ezrin or David Bowie that knew what Lou Reed music should sound like, better than Lou knew himself. But alas, Lou thought he knew better so we have a dozen or so records of Lou's music post-MMM that sounds and feels like someone that can write great songs but doesn't necessarily comprehend how they should sound.

Be that as it may, I would recommend this record only to those brave souls who enjoy the sound of the death and subsequent re-birth of a rock star. It is most assuredly not a pretty sound, and more than likely harkens to Lou Reed's personal recollections of horrors of eletro-shock thereapy which he, himself endured as a young man at the insistence of his parents, mixed in with drug abuse, alcoholism and all the "friends" and nightmares he formed throughout his life at that time.

Clearing the air sometimes requires total annihilation and Lou Reed certainly achieved that with this record. You have now been forewarned. Proceed at your own risk, because there's a wasteland here with no happy ending.

editor's note ( this is a continuation of a previous review by the same reviewer under a different name. And should not be considered plagiarism).

5 out of 5 stars It ain't sweet, Jane........2007-05-30

I own four copies of this recording on three different media: LP (framed, on the wall), 8-Track (still sealed), CD (early eighties Japanese bootleg that I shoplifted around 1986 or so) and now this package. It's obviously one of my favorite records. If you listen to most of the other reviewers here I guess that makes me either psychotic (at worst) or a hopeless geek (at best). But I don't necessarily love it for the "music". I find that I'm fascinated by Lou's complete and utter rejection of commercial success and conformity. Only Van Morrison worked harder to push success away (but, of course, made arguably better art doing it).
It is my understanding, from reading just about every Lou Reed/Velvet Underground biography ever printed, that MMM was not entirely a joke nor entirely a "middle finger" to the fans or RCA. Lou had to make one more record to fulfill his contract and RCA was pushing him for it. So he sat down and made this recording of squealing feedback. RCA was skeptical but Lou had a reputation (rightly or wrongly) for being edgy so he was able to convince them of it's merit so thoroughly that they wanted to release it on their classical music label. In a interview by Lester Bangs Lou claimed he talked them out of that because (here's the real joke...) he thought that would be pretentious!
Lester Bangs also wrote a sometimes irony-free article suggesting that MMM was the best album ever made. That article is the reason I searched out and stole that CD copy all those years ago. Now, I can't say, as Lester did that, "I take [MMM] about once a day, like vitamins" but I will say that if you actually listen to MMM it is pretty interesting, especially through headphones. The screeching noise through the two stereo channels is almost hypnotic and if you listen long enough you'll swear there are voices in there. All that said though, is there any reason a regular ol' Sweet Jane loving Lou fan should own this? Well, I guess not. Except maybe as an historical artifact or it is useful as a late-night-party-ender. There are those of us though who, for whatever reason, have risen above being just a Regular ol' Lou fan and have morphed into something more... more... Cynical, I guess. I mean I would rather listen to MMM a hundred times than be forced to hear The Raven even once. Geez, which album is the joke here, huh?
Bottom line is, if you're only a Lou Reed dabbler or if you have Lou albums AND Coldplay albums don't bother with MMM. Me, though? I plan on playing it at my wedding, during my first dance with the new mother-in-law.
By the way, Metal Machine Music was recently resurrected and transcribed by Zeitkratzer, a ten-piece German orchestra ensemble, for a live performance at the Berlin Opera House, and Reed was invited for a guitar solo. So, there are other masochistic goons out there too.

3 out of 5 stars Contempt........2007-05-23

Let's not over think this one too much; this record is a statement of contempt, and it sounds like it. No one has a gap big enough in their record collection to fit this except the uber-completeist; on the other hand, I do think that everyone should listen to it at least once and to be sure, if you see a CHEAP old lp version of it, buy it. Personally, I sat in my radio station's engineering studio with a pair of good headphones and listened to both sides completely ONCE when I was 19. I did my duty to Lou Reed and the record, and my duty is done. I get it... Next!

3 out of 5 stars Hmmmm.......2007-05-20

One thing first: this is a record consisting of 4 pieces of continuous unlistenable feedback. Nothing else. It drones on forever. A lot has been written about this record and most reviews do not really explain that it is simply noise. There is no melody no rhythm no structure. It cannot really qualify as music as such. If you read any piece on it by Lester Bangs for example or any review, you will not really get what it is until you actually listen to it. It does not matter if it was a joke or an actual attempt at exeprimental music, it fails a both. Still the concept of a major artist indulging in such a work at that time and at this point in his career is fascinating. Beacuse of that it is an indispensable addition to any serious rock collection: simply because it is historically important in a strange way. You will probably not listen to it often. Others have done stuff that is pretty close such as Steve Shelley with Sky Yen.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD Layer.......2007-01-02

If you're looking for the best PCM CD version of Machine Head available - this is it. The CD layer on this hybrid SACD is vastly superior to the anniversary 2 CD remaster (which is superior to the original CD release). It sounds very natural and hi-res, exactly what I'd expect the master tape to sound like. On previous versions, including the original vinyl, the mix was all jumbled with the instruments all seemingly jammed on top of each other. On this DSD remix and remaster, the instruments and vocals are all in their own space, and the soundstage has depth, plus the bass is stronger and more defined. The price, at the time of this writing, is astronomical, so I'd recommend buying from one of the Amazon Market sellers or go to Amazon UK.

5 out of 5 stars Machine Head and Led Zepp. IV the greatest rock lp's ever!.......2006-02-17

If you are a lover of rock, then Machine Head by Deep Purple is a must in your collection. I think I have almost every cd and vinyl version of this lp (except the original quad version) in my collection. This was recorded by the Mark II version of the band which is their best lineup. Ian Gillan, Richie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, and Ian Paice were the essential hard rockers of the day (along with Led Zeppelin). Recorded in the Grand Hotel in Geneva Switzerland. Because of a fire, the band had no place to record. However, this hotel in Switzerland was empty during the winter and negotiations were completed to use the hallways and corridors to complete the lp. The song "Smoke on the water" sums up the story quite nicely. This lp rocks from start to blazing finish with such classic tunes as the above track, Highway Star, Lazy, and Space Truckin. It leaves you begging for more when it's over. Now, there are 2 surround sound versions of this lp available. The Dvd audio version, and the Super Audio version. Since I have both, I will give you my most honest review, and leave it up to you to decide. First off they both sound excellent. But there is a clear winner of the two. Listening to both several times, I believe the imported Super Audio version wins by a slight margain. The dvd audio version contains many differences in the songs, compaired with the original versions. Guitar solo's are different, also the dvd audio sounds a little more harsher with less bass, and also some of the songs are longer than the original versions. This is not altogether a bad thing but if you want the versions of the songs as close to the originals as possible, then this (SACD)is the cd to have. It has the warmth and sound of the original recording in PCM stereo, and also contains the "Original" quad versions from the lp that was released. Since these are the quad versions there is no sound coming from the center speaker. However there is sound from the subwoofer if you have the 5.1 audio system setup. Even without the audio from the center speaker, the vocals are still mixed in nicely so you wont't notice the difference too much. So I claim this to be the 1st 4.1 surround cd I have in my collection. You also get some alternate surround mixes of Lazy, Maybe I'm A Leo, and When A Blind Man Cries. The Dvd audio isn't bad but in my opinion, the Sacd version just all around sounds better. It is not that easy to get, however. And it is more costly than the standard cd version. But because I love this lp so much I happily shelled out a few more dollars to get it. Now if only Led Zeppelin IV would be released in surrround sound..........................

5 out of 5 stars Deep Purple's classic 1972 masterpiece.......2005-06-23

Machine Head (1972.) Deep Purple's sixth album.
By the time 1972 rolled around, Deep Purple had built up a pretty strong following, despite the fact that they had to replace their original lead vocalist and a few other band members. Normally, making band member changes will destroy a band, but with Deep Purple, that just wasn't true. The so-called "Mark Two" line-up which featured Ian Gillan is widely known as the finest line-up the band ever had. 1972 was a big year for the band, whose reputation was growing. The main reason it as seen as such a big year for the band is because it's the year they released the Machine Head album. Most Deep Purple fans call this the band's finest album. Are they right? Read on for my review.

Three of Deep Purple's biggest hits call Machine Head home, probably the reason it is the band's most popular album. Smoke On The Water, arguably the band's biggest hit of all, can be found here. The opening guitar solo by Blackmore is priceless. And, of course, we have Highway Star. This song is a legendary classic rocker, and though it never gained as much popularity as, say, Smoke On The Water, it is equally excellent. And of course, he have the classic Space Truckin'. With its inventive lyrics and hypnotic melodies, this is one of the band's strongest tracks. The other tracks, though they never became big hits, are no less excellent. The strangely-titled Lazy features some or Blackmore's finest guitar work. The rest of the band is also in their prime, making this one of the band's most interesting pieces of work. Maybe I'm A Leo is another underrated masterpiece that a number of fans constantly praise. Once again, you've gotta love Blackmore's guitar! Pictures of home is a prime example of the classic fast and furious rock that makes fans love Deep Purple so much. And, of course, we have Never Before. This one isn't as fast as some of the other tracks on the album, and it sounds a little more "poppy" than the other songs, but it's still excellent. All in all, this is one hell of an album.

Much like a number of other Deep Purple albums, in addition to the standard CD release of the album, a deluxe edition of the album has also been released. The deluxe edition features a whole extra disc of material! Unfortunately, it's tough to come by the deluxe edition in America, and even if you do, it's priced quite a bit higher than its standard-issue counterpart. Still, whatever edition of the album you buy will be excellent.

Final verdict? This album deserves all of the praise that fans give it on a regular basis. I don't know if I'd call it my personal favorite of their albums, but if it isn't my favorite, it's pretty close to the top (in my opinion, Fireball gives this one a real run for its money.) If you're a a fan of classic hard rock/heavy metal, you must get your hands on this album.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best rock albums of all time.......2006-05-04

If you like your rock with feel and lots of groove, you need this cd. Triumph was a Canadian band that was pretty big in the late 70's early 80's and this is the cd that got them known the best. Triumph has put out some stinkers, but this one folks totally rocks from start to finish.

This is the newly remastered one and it does sound very good. However the original album's sound quality was also very good considering it was released in the late 70's, so why should we expect anything but top notch quality here? I love this cd and it's one of my favourites for straight ahead classic rock. I'd say it's right up their with Boston's first release. If you like that old fashioned guitar rock, you need this cd in your collection! This release is 100% accurate to the original album that was released way back when. No extra's or cuts, just 100% true to form.

Oh and for the guy who keeps bitching about it not having his favorite song (insert blinding light show/moon child here!!!), it was never on this album, it was on their first release and was the last track in fact. Check it out!!

Canadian rock rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Triumph's best album? It just might be.......2005-10-24

Rock And Roll Machine (1978.) Triumph's second album.

INTRODUCTION:
In the late seventies through the middle of the eighties, Triumph was a moderately popular classic hard rock act. The three-piece Canadian band consisted of guitarist Rik Emmett, drummer Gil Moore, and bassist/keyboardist Mike Levine. Although the band's popularity didn't really take off until the eighties, when they scored the good majority of their hits, the group released several albums prior to that, in the seventies. The band's self-titled debut was released in 1976. It was followed up with the sophomore album, 1978's Rock And Roll Machine. Was the band desperate to find a sound in this early formative period, or did they rock hard from their earliest days together? You're gonna have to keep reading if you want to find out.

OVERVIEW:
Triumph released their second album, Rock And Roll Machine, in 1976, on the independent record label, Attic. The band consisted of its classic formation of Mike Levine, Rik Emmett, and Gil Moore in this period. Mike Levine produced the album with Doug Hill. Tracklist on the album features Takes Time, Bringing It On Home, Little Texas Shaker, New York City Streets Part One, New York City Streets Part Two, The City, Rocky Mountain Way, and Rock And Roll Machine.

REVIEW:
Long before Triumph started experimenting with the eighties pop-metal sound that most people tend to associate them with, the band flat-out ROCKED. Not to say their eighties stuff was weak, it wasn't, but in the seventies the band served straight-up classic hard rock, and nothing they ever did would compare to the sheer brilliance of their early formative period. Many bands take several albums before they find a good sound all their own, but not Triumph. The Canadian rock trio sounded excellent from their earliest days. Let's take a look at the tracks the band's sophomore album presents.

-SIDE A-

-Takes Time: Triumph knows how to start an album on a high note, and if you need proof of it, you'll get it here. This is straight-up, classic seventies-style hard rock at its absolute best. Levine, Moore, and Emmett absolutely rock on this one. Could the band have started this album on a higher note? Probably not. AWESOME song.

-Bringing It On Home: After kicking off the album with a straight-up rocker, the band slows things way down, beautifully demonstrating their musical diversity. This is another hard rocker, but it's slower and more melodic than the track that kicked off the album. Once again, the band doesn't fail to please. Rik Emmett serves up awesome riffs from start to finish here.

-Little Texas Shaker: This song title is ironic, since it is a disc jockey in Texas who got hold of some of the band's early records, and in a way, was responsible for much of their popularity. As for the song itself, it's excellent. This is straight-up hard rock that managed to hold its own unique sound. Back in this early formative period, Triumph had a hard rock sound all their own, and it's a shame they lost hold of it a few albums later. Another great song.

-New York City Streets Part One: Part one of the two-part epic. This is a short track, clocking in at just over three minutes. His is the band at their slowest and most melodic sound of this era. The melodic, soulful sound the band manages to create on this album makes it one of their most unique and diverse pieces.

-New York City Streets Part Two: Part two of the two-part epic. Now, this is about as different from the first part as you could possibly get! The band starts rocking hard and heavy once again, picking up the pace dramatically. Once again, the vocals on this song are reminiscent of Geddy Lee, from the other Canadian power trio, Rush. Every member of the band absolutely shines on this one. These guys knew how to rock hard.

-SIDE B-

-The City: This multi-part, lengthy track is often thought of as the band's magnum opus from there early days. And after you listen to it, you'll see why. An epic rocking instrumental sequence kicks things off beautifully. And then, things get slow and melodic. Rik Emmett's vocals in the melodic portion are absolutely incredible. The final minute is hard and heavy rock, and it closes out the piece nicely. Anyone who claims this song is an excellent one is right.

-Rocky Mountain Way: This is a cover of the song Joe Walsh recorded and put out in 1973, on his classic The Smoker You Drink The Player You Get Album. Interestingly, the band doesn't do a whole lot to the song. For the most part, this is a straight-up cover song - no big changes were made to the original formula. I'm not complaining, though - changes often destroy cover songs. Walsh's original was great the way it was, and the band keeping the song true to the original was probably smart.

-Rock And Roll Machine: The title track closes out the album, and that title could have been any more appropriate. The intro and outro to this song are hard-rocking pieces that actually sound a bit on the punk-metal side - definitely not the Triumph most people know and love! However, the vast majority of the song is the bridge in the middle, which is essentially a Rik Emmett guitar solo - and a damn good one, too. The band really finished the album off on a high note.

And there you have it. On their debut album, Triumph demonstrated from day one that they could rock and roll. And rock and roll they did once again on their sophomore effort. Although the album and its predecessor was not very successful at its time of release, it did get reissued on a major label a few years later when the band was really starting to come into their own sound. That helped boost the popularity of the band's earlier sound. Overall, I have to say that this is a very impressive release from the band. If you're at all a fan of classic rock/hard rock, this is worth buying.

EDITION NOTES:
Most of Triumph's albums have gotten a long overdue reissuing in America. And to make things even better, these reissues are of the original Canadian albums! The original LPs that were released in America back in the day (the first few albums they put out) were NOT the same as the originals (for example, the American version of Rock And Roll Machine was a mixture of tracks from the debut and the Canadian version of the album.) Thank goodness the originals are finally available in America! There aren't any bonus cuts, sadly, but as a whole these remasters are satisfying.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE:
I need to close out this review by clearing up a very common misconception people tend to make about the CD issue of this album - THIS IS A REISSUE OF THE ORIGINAL CANADIAN ALBUM, NOT THE ORIGINAL AMERICAN ALBUM! The original Canadian version of the album DID NOT include Blinding Light Show/Moonchild, which is why it isn't on here. In Canada, Blinding Light Show/Moonchild was on the DEBUT album (which has since been reissued under the name In The Beginning.) The reissue of the debut DOES include that track. So if you buy the CD reissues of the Canadian versions of the debut and Rock And Roll Machine, you will have all of the tracks that were on the American Rock And Roll Machine - and plenty of others that weren't. In other words, Blinding Light Show/Moonchild isn't on here because IT ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE ON HERE - it's supposed to be on the debut (which it is on, on the CD reissue.)

5 out of 5 stars Their best!.......2005-09-01

This is Triumph's best album. As for the other two reviews, those missing songs are on "In The Beginning". A couple songs from that album were apparently tacked onto "RnR Machine" when it went to CD, and the first album was taken out of print. With "In The Beginning" back in print, there is no need for repetition, so buy both!

5 out of 5 stars The best song is here: The City.......2005-08-04

Please note that this cd is the release of the european version of this cd. It contains an amazing song that my friends and I heard at that time which is "City". It is an absolutely fantastic song, and the people in Canada and US paid horrendous sums at that time to get a copy of that record.
I know that Moon Child and Blinding Light show are missing here, but hey: if you are looking for a rarity once you will be blown away by the guitar of "City"...
And you can still buy a copy of the original Canada/US version...

    Album Description

Since 1973, the year when Glenn Hughes was enlisted by Deep Purple as their new bassist and vocalist, he has brought out numerous solo albums, stylistically at the interface of rock, metal, funk, and soul. Fans and media have given British-born Hughes the nickname `The Voice of Rock', a moniker that once again proves to be well deserved on Building the Machine, which includes a new version of the Deep Purple classic `High Ball Shooter' (from his masterpiece Stormbringer).

    4 out of 5 stars Solid Stuff.......2006-11-14

All in all, this a good listen. It starts out heavy, like Deep Purple for kids weaned on grunge. A tad too much for some of us glam fans, but nonetheless, it's a fine way to kick things off. Then, you feel some funk creeping up. Organs come in around the middle of the album, and it creates a great vibe that you couldn't have expected earlier on. Then the album winds down and the guitars start getting less heavy and more acoustic. By the time it ends, the album seems to have undergone a softening of sorts. And yet, it feels perfectly natural. There no real clunkers on this thing, and some tracks' enjoyable factor may outlast their playing time. Overall, a commendable effort that stands up better than you might expect.

5 out of 5 stars glenn is god!.......2005-03-01

My musical taste has always revolved around the Deep Purple, White Snake, UFO, Sabbath, Dio, Tommy Bolin, circle, but one name clearly stands out from the rest and that is GLENN HUGHES. I keep buying back catalog stuff and continue to be blown away! This guy rocks and sings with a feeling that grabs you inside. This disc rocks from beginning to end. Make sure to check out his new stuff with Dave Navrro and Chad Smith, Soul Mover. I saw a promo video and heard the tune at the NAMM show in january in LA and I was blown away by it!!!

4 out of 5 stars Glenn Hughes builds the machine quite well!!!.......2004-05-05

Ok, let me start saying this: It`s been a long time since I first heard this album but it stands as one of my favourite Hughes albums. I bought this album right after it came out here in Norway. I was very into Glenn Hughes and his voice from albums such as Deep Purple-Burn and Stormbringer, and Since that I have always been a hugh fan of his. Ok, I bought this album in exitement of hearing his voice in the age of 50 i suppose and was trilled about how good it was!!!! I couldn`t believe what I was hearing!!!! That voice is amazing and now i can understand that people call him: The Voice Of Rock. The music is also very good. It Rocks big time. This was a very big surprise for me, because I had never heard anything from him since his Deep Purple days. This is a must for all Glenn Hughes fans

4 out of 5 stars HYPER- SOLID STUFF!!!.......2003-02-04

Building The Machine is a solid set of Hard Rock songs with a very healthy dose of funk, a Hughes' trademark. What impresses me the most is Glenn's voice still in wonderful shape as well as the great musical craft and poise of his bass playing; supported professionally by J.J. Marsh (guitar) and Gary Ferguson (drums)a pair of more than average musicians.
In a time of hyper complex guitar solos, odd atmospheres and twisted lyrical themes in Metal (which I love), Building the Machine is a very refreshing injection of joy and good vibe, recalling a clearer and simplest time.
Highlights: "Out on Me", "Don't Let It Slip Away", the fabolous Purple's revamp of "Highball Shooter" as well as Rare Earth's "I Just Want To Celebrate" featuring canadian great Pat Travers as guest axeman.
Despite certain inconstancies, specifically on the four ballads which sound somewhat generic; this CD has been spinning in my player for months non-stop. Maybe this is not a masterpiece, but is a very enjoyable and memorable musical experience.

    KEEP THE FLAME BURNING.

4 out of 5 stars Not really their best, but has a great attitude.......2005-10-27

This is not my favourite Donnas album. Admittedly, it was an immediate break from the Ramones sound of their first album (which was put out only earlier that year), and it marked the sound that they would use for the next few albums. But it is lacking the energy that you will hear in their other albums.

That's not to say that I don't like the album. Rock n Roll Machine itself may be one of the greatest songs that have been released in the past 10 years. It just so perfectly captures the attitude of adolescence. In fact, that song itself justified for me the purchase of this album.

The rest of the album fares well with songs like "Checkin' It Out" and "Looking For Blood" being a couple of highlights. But overall the album just thins out rather quickly compared to The Donnas' other efforts.

I suppose that I would go along with the others in saying that this is probably your best starting point, only because this was where the "Donnas' sound" that we know today really started, and I wouldn't want you to jump into it halfway. But there really are better Donnas albums out there.

4 out of 5 stars Looking for Punk?.......2005-01-28

The Donnas surprises with their second album. The album full of great punk rock songs. The songs are short and fast ones like punk should be. The sound quality is very good. The vocalist Donna A. sings excellently. This female band is probably the best punk band in the world since Blondie. But like Blondie, The Donnas haven't started to make songs which are near pop music. No - The Donnas have 6 albums full of great punk rock music. The lyrics are very good - ambitious and angry...and the most important - rebellious. The songs like "Checkin' It Out", "Looking for Blood", "Rock 'n' Roll Machine", "Outta My Mind"...are truly punk classics. This album has also a great feature - the more you listen to it the more you like it. However, this album isn't even near their best...there's "Spend the Night" and "Get Skintight" which both are that kind of albums you can't easily be tired of. "Wanna Get Some Stuff", "Shake in the Action", "You Make Me Hot", "Rock 'n' Roll Machine"...make me think of Black Flag. The sounds are quite as near them...only they are now much better...but that's only a progress. I guess rock 'n'roll never dies...although punk rock isn't right now that "in-thing"...but who cares? I just wanna have some good rock music - I don't care so much about the outer world...they can play their lousy disco pop songs...as far as I don't hear them. The Donnas is right now the best punk band in the world...even the best punk band I know ever!
Stars: Checkin' It Out, Looking for Blood, You Make Me Hot, Rock 'n' Roll Machine

    4 out of 5 stars cool.......2004-08-02

Production-wise, this is one of The Donnas better albums. The songs are good - but the only ones I usualy listen to are Rock'N'Roll Machine, You Make Me Hot, Checkin' It Out, Gimee My Radio, Outa My Head, and I Want Some Stuff.
Song-wise, I'd say Get Skintight is better than this album.

4 out of 5 stars Great rock C.D........2004-06-21

If you want to buy your first Donnas C.D. you can skip the self-titled and buy this. I first bought Spend the Night and sort of went backwards. I just bought this CD and it was great. I have listened to their other onces a million times and needed something new. There are 10 tracks on here and I love them all! This is a great rock 'n' roll album. I love the old Donnas days when their CDs sounded more raw-ish than now if you know what I mean.
Rock n Roll Machine is a good opener. This is like, a teenager's anthem right here. I also really like 'Checkin it Out' because it has a cool guitar solo. The guitar and bass on Speed Demon is really rad and makes it one of my favorite songs. And I also love Shake in the Action too. Donna R. aka Allison is a great guitarist and most bands have to have a great guitarist if I am going to listen to them. Also Donna C. is a pretty good drummer but she plays pretty basic beats on the album and still does today. It gets boring. Sorry, I have to say it. This is still a good cd nonetheless. I reccomend it to rock fans of every age.
