4 out of 5 stars Ageing hippy?.......2007-05-14

My 17 year old son, who was born 20 years after Woodstock bought this CD after he heard "On the road again" at a friend's house. The CD is great and brings back memories from the 60s and 70s

5 out of 5 stars This Is Sure A Can Of Heat.......2007-03-21

I am a Chicago Electric Blues man and was brought up on that kind of music. When the white bands decided to start covering black muscic I was some what dubious. I remember when Canned Heat first came out. I was immediately impressed with their style it was almost like listening to some of the better blues artists at the time. This compilation has assembled a ton of good ear stuff. I particulary liked .......... "Dust My Broom," (almost an Elmore James sound)" Bullfrog Blues," (that cooks)" Rollin and Tumblin" (a traditional black blues song also). They have one of their John Lee Hooker tracts "Whiskey and Women" which is awesome. This sucker even has a Little Richard combo on it.....what more can you ask! Well you can ask for the two songs they are most noted for "On The Road Again," and "Goin Up To Country" ...awesome baby..but the icing on the cake to me was "Let's Work Together." Buy it, try it and you will like it. Joliet Jayke the Bluze Brother would not steer you wrong...now go order it so you can gettin some "Heat" in your soul.

5 out of 5 stars A great musical flashback!.......2007-01-07

It had been over 30 years since I listened to a song by Canned Heat. I liked them somewhat in the 60's and early 70's but they were by no means one of Wow, I forgot how great they were. These guys could play some music. Maybe my tastes in music have matured as I have, I am now 54 yrs. old but I just really appreciate the talent that was Canned Heat. Kick back, and flash back, you will be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Great Canned Heat Compilation and Great Sound.......2006-09-20

This CD is great! It contains the very best and most comprehensive collection of Canned Heat singles. And, the recorded sound is extraordinary...much better than the original releases in most cases. If you like Canned Heat, whose legend continues to grow, then you will LOVE this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Bear is There.......2006-07-19

This album is by far the best compilation out there, if you wish a good solid concise overview of one of maybe a half-dozen bands who could make po bedevilled blues lovers like me and my friends git down on our knees and cry! real tears! because they were (and remain, dead or alive) one of the absolute best blues bands ever. The respect these guys had for their material is evident in every song, and they practiced long and hard, obviously, to get the sound they wanted. Buy this, at any price between ten and fifteen bucks, I'd say, it's worth it. You might want to pick up "Future Blues" as well. Contrary to what some revisionists now say, that was the LP we decided was the ultimate blues album, back in the day. Noone would never top that. (After awhile on our knees, weeping again)...I've haven't heard any better since.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Classic blues-rock band.......2005-04-13

This compilation covers the period 1967 to 1972 and contains the best tracks from their most famous period. They have recorded some interesting music since then, most notably the album Boogie 2000, which I've already reviewed.

Here you can find all their big hits. On the road again, my favorite track, was a UK top ten hit and an American top twenty hit in 1968. Going up the country became a top twenty hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Let's work together was Canned Heat's biggest UK hit, reaching the top three although it was only a top thirty hit in America. Bryan Ferry later covered it as Let's stick together and also had a huge British hit with it. Country singer Dwight Yoakam also recorded a great cover of the song, proving that a great song can be adapted to any style of music and still sound great.

If you remember and enjoy On the road again, Going up the country and Let's work together, then you will surely enjoy the rest of the music here, as those songs are typical of Canned Heat's style. The other songs are somewhat obscure but among them are a minor UK hit (Sugar bee) and a minor American hit (Time was).

If you enjoy blues-rock music, Canned Heat should appeal to you. This compilation contains all the essentials.

        3 out of 5 stars Good introduction.......2005-01-04

There was a lot of blues around at the time of the beat boom but by the time Canned Heat emerged it had mostly become supercharged by Cream and Hendrix, psychedelicised by the likes of Jefferson Airplane or bludgeoned into submission by high-volume bands like Blue Cheer. Consequently, they sounded slightly dated and overly purist at the time, especially since their music harked back to the more acoustic, less fashionable blues of Henry Thomas, Cleveland Crotchet and the Memphis Jug Band, to name just a few covered on this collection.
I only knew their singles, so was pleasantly surprised to discover the longer, more experimental pieces like the twenty-minute Parthenogenesis and the live favourite Fried Hockey Boogie. Furthermore, they now sound a lot less dated than many of their contemporaries, due to the sincerity and integrity of their approach to the blues

        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2003-12-19

Are you a fan of the blues? You need these sogns if you dn't have them already. I think the best three songs are their versions of "Rollin and Tumblin" fantastic harmonica on "I'm her man" and the classic "Dust my broom" I would have thoguth instead of "Parthenogenesis" and "Fried hockey boogie" we could have had some more decent tracks, make it a 20 track CD if you know what I mean. Anyway, I still have 13 classics. THe other standouts are their originals "World in a jug" and "Going up the country". The rest of them are very good too. Any music fan needs this, since it's easy to listen to yet it's rhythm and blues. It's very easy-listening. Some blues bands, especially the mroe modern ones [no-one I review] sound more like noise than music. I'm not trying to denigrate somethign I don't like but the production is bad and overall playing incorporates too much of the punk attitude. Here, no such problems, easy to listen to and is Rhythm and blues at it's finest.

4 out of 5 stars Best Ever? Maybe The Best Single Disc Compilation Available.......2004-11-05

Personally, I do not consider compilation albums real "albums". So that shoots down the pretentious "best ever" part of this album's title. Also, it is impossible to appreciate the music of Canned Heat to the fullest without hearing it within the context of the original albums. Buying every Canned Heat album, however, is obviously not cost effective for the casual fan, so the compilation "albums" are the next best thing. That being said this title might be the best "one" disc compilation, but the "Uncanned! The Best Of Canned Heat" 2 cd set blows this single disc release away.
My advice is to shell out the extra cash on the "Uncanned" set and pass on this one. Even if you're on an ultra-strict budget you can get "Uncanned" thru zShops for less than this single disc sells for new.
