Working Classical might just be the perfect outlet for the composing skills of Sir Paul McCartney. Here, the former Beatles (and, let's not forget, Wings) member scales things down from his previous classical-music endeavors--the overweight works Liverpool Oratorio and Standing Stone. In the hands of the Loma Mar Quartet chamber group and the London Symphony Orchestra, McCartney's shorter compositions sound all the more intimate (and effective). Album opener "Junk" is a simple waltz dating from the composer's days with the Fab Four, performed here by the Quartet with short-but-sweet results. "A Leaf" is another waltz motif, this one performed with a full orchestra. McCartney pop favorites "Warm and Beautiful," "Somedays," "She's My Baby," and "The Lovely Linda" all get chamber-music treatments that bring out their compositional beauty. And, while influences seem to range from Janácek to Morricone, there's no doubting that McCartney knows how to write a convincing ditty--pop or otherwise. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
nice string music.......2007-07-13
Wow, these are nice arrangements. Very good to put on the CD player late at night and relaxing with. Very good.
Macca continues to amaze. As Ringo said in reference to "Let it Be...Naked":"(Paul) ,You were right all along."
I think when the history is written many years from now, it'll be seen that while John Lennon was the heart of the Beatles,Paul McCartney was their musical brain. I feel Mac will stand tall with other notable composers from the Western musical tradition.
AS soon as the classical snobs make themselves admit it.
Melodically,Mac can't be beat.
W/out Mac,there would've not been the Beatles as we know them today.
This CD is well worth buying.
Perfect Format to Present Paul's Genius.......2006-11-20
Confused recent reviews have argued about whether this is classical or MUZAK. Whatever you want to call the form, the music itself is brilliant and inspired. We would not give two shakes about these tunes that are in some cases thirty-six years old if they had no draw to our hearts and no merit. This album would have been released and forgotten and that definitely has not happened.
I have just listened to the broadcast of Paul's most recent classical work Ecce Cor Meum from Carnegie Hall in New York (Nov. 14, 2006) and prior to the main piece, the soprano Kate Royal and another vocalist sang these songs accompanied by the same quartet that appears on Working Classical. It was essentially a live version of this album with vocals and it was brilliant as is the original Working Classical CD. My Love, Warm and Beautiful, Calico Skies and Junk come off as extraordinarily brillant as they do on this recording. These songs, whether in this form or closer to their original form, will live forever and no amount of "orchestration" can kill them.
The same reviewer wrote: "it is a sign of the decline of serious culture that so many people actually believe that this MUZAK is classical music". How pompous some classical music fans are that they cannot conceive of any important music being written in modern times. Another reviewer wrote: "an orchestrated pop song is still a pop song". Perhaps, but that is not a fatal critcism that would obviate the joy these melodies give and emotions they hold. On the contrary, this is not elevator music. Elevator music is not compelling, its not memorble and its not written by a genius named Paul McCartney.
If you were to take a sonata by a well-known classical composer and play it among 'elevator music' with an overblown song like "Feelings", for example, would that turn it into elevator music? The discerning among us know the difference. An orchestrated pop song is not just MUZAK. That is just simple-minded. This idea comes from John Lennon's song "How Do You Sleep?" during which he idenifies Paul's music as MUZAK. John later denounced and rejected the sentiments of that song.
It turns out Paul is the coolest Beatle because he is the least affected, the least afraid to worry about what people would think about his doing something like this recording. He is not worried about the posturing associated with the tough guy rock and roll image. He is first and foremost an artist and musician--one of rare quality and talent.
This is NOT classical music.......2006-11-07
It is a sign of the decline of serious culture that so many people actually believe that this MUZAK is classical music. As another reviewer wrote: an orchestrated pop song is still a pop song. It's so funny: in the 1960s, kids used to laugh at their parents for being so square for listening to 'elevator music'(i.e., orchestrated pop songs) and not being cool and listening the Beatles...and now those kids are adults and they are listening to...elevator music written by one of the Fab Four!!
one of my favoirte cds.......2006-08-05
sir paul writes such beautiful melodies. found this in the library and just loved it. it is such a peaceful pleasure to listen to. you will find some familiar tunes and other new ones. i find it moving and lovely.
Is it possible to wear out a CD?.......2006-03-26
I first heard the song "Tuesday" on my "wake-up" radio station. I was amazed and thrilled when I found Paul McCartney as the truly gifted composer, proven by this glorious work. Some of the tracks are reminiscent of old Beatles songs.
His music possesses a gentle whimsy and include orchestral or chamber versions of some of his recognizable songs such as "Junk," "My Love" and "Maybe I'm Amazed."
I'd read all the reviews and have included a snippet from one which I am happy to share... this just says it all...
Gerald R Steele
"An extension of an event, begun in the sixties, called, "The Beatles", Paul McCartney has confirmed the importance of the original Phenomena. Some of us realized that from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" a culmination of music, from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Gershwin, and Vaughn-Williams, was emerging.
One can only hope for more. This tribute to Linda may begin something that will reference a "pop-culture" that included "The Beatles" as the beginning to music that truly responds to "the inner-ear" of, at least, three generations. This is the stuff that lives for thousands of years." Thank you Gerald. Imagine, touching the hearts of THREE generations?
My own love for this album is enhanced by my friendships as I compare my feelings, during listening, to them. A dear friend, Linda, rides her mechanical steed every morning and I think of her as I listen to "The Lovely Linda". I can see her in the morning dawn, peddling along and enjoying the morning and life. "Calico Skies" is reminiscent of all my Mitford pals! So dignified and serene! I'll probably wear out this CD from playing it so much.

This album is SOOOO funny and awesome, but it has some duds. I'll rate em individually.
Trogdor:
by: Strong Bad: 10/10:
Probably the most anticipated song her. its extended with an awesome dualing guitar solo.
The System is Down:
by: Strong Bad: 9/10:
can get annoying, but there's a good part at the end
Strong Badia National Anthem:
by: Strong Bad feat. Mrs. Partsmatter's 1st grade class: 8/10:
I would rate higher, but the 1st grade class gets on my nerves. But this version is funnier so.......
Oh Yeah Yeah (Punk Rock Version):
by: Marzipan: 5/10:
Oh.... Problematic
Because It's Midnight:
by: Limozeen: 12/10:
Oh yeah! The best thing on the album. It's amazing how the same guy can such a wide range from Limozeen to Taranchula to the Kinda Long-Haired Band! Anyway, this song sounds almost exactly like an eighties song! An AWESOME eighties song! It's got the memerable chorus, overdriven guitar/synth solo, EVERYTHING!
Circles:
by: The Kinda Long-Haired Band: 10/10:
Another hit! It's extended w/ a more acoustic feel. Theres a mellow solo leading to Strong Bad getting into it. Beautiful!
Let's Get Started on Doing All Those Awesome Things I Suggested: by: Strong Bad: 7/10:
It's all talking. As soon as the song gets started, the tape literally dies. But it's funny how after the tape dies, it goes right into death metal in a second, even though I don't think that was their intention.
Moving Very Slowly:
by: Taranchula: 8/10:
First of all, I HATE death metal, but for some reason I'mattracted to it. Maybe its the awesome solo...
Sweet Cuppin' Cakes Theme Song:
by: The Cast of Sweet Cuppin' Cakes: 7/10:
Another dud. It's WAY too off beat. It would be alright if it was kinda off beat, but they just tried too hard.
I Think I Have a Chance With This Guy:
by: What's-Her-Face: 5/10:
Yet another dud. The song is just What's-Her-Face saying "I think I have a chance with this guy" over and over again to a crummy dance beat.
It Was Like It was meant to Be:
by: Strong Bad: 9/10:
Nobody else I know likes this song as much as I do, but I think it's pretty nice and mellow. Reminds me of Journey vaguely.
Nite Mamas:
by: Limozeen: 9/10
Not the best by Limozeen. The drumming and beat is kinda off. Also the verse is kinda mediocre. BUT it's got a great chorus and solo, so the good outweighs the bad
Sensitive to Bees:
by: Marzipan feat. Strong Bad & Homestar Runner: 9/10
without Strong Bad and Homestar, the song is still pretty good. but WITH Strong Bad's funny commentary and Homestar's blatant unawareness of what's going on, it becomes way better
You've Got an Ugly and Stupid Butt:
by: Strong Bad: 8/10
What's there to say? The beginning is fulla R&B and the end is fulla salsa. It's pretty funny.
These Peoples Try to Fade Me:
by: Coach Z: 9/10
HILARIOUS! Coach Z trying to rap is HILARIOUS!!!!
The Ladies in the Town All know my Name:
by: Strong Bad: 8/10
Even though it's wicked short, it's still got a psychedelic feel and a reference to Brianrietta
Theme from Dangeresque II
by: Strong Bad: 8/10
Very spy-like! Funny lyrics. good beat (celebrity pharmacist?)
Somebody Told Me (Now I Believe Them)
by: Strong Bad: 9/10
The best "Strong Bad Sings"-derived song here. This song is set to a blugrass rhythm, and I'm not a bluegrass fan either. But it's just so funny and strangely attractive...
The Cheat is Not Dead:
by: Strong Bad feat. Strong Sad and Strong Mad: 10/10
Definitely one of the best here! extended, Great tune. Hilarious lyrics. a choir?, and an upbeat gospel ending.
Everybody to the Limit (Live at West Reykjavik)
by: Strong Bad: 10/10
WAY better than the studio version. It's got extended lyrics and a synth's accompaniment (is that a word?!)

At a time when popular music has been micro-marketed to the far side of ad nauseam, Declan MacManus, a.k.a. Elvis Costello, has traded on his reputation as the brightest songwriter to emerge from the new wave era to foster any number of delightful, cross-genre/generation musical surprises, including soundtracks and collaborations with the Brodsky Quartet, Paul McCartney, jazz artist Roy Nathanson, and songwriting legend Burt Bacharach. The latest fruit of that generous, insatiably curious artistic spirit is this elegant partnership with Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne-Sofie von Otter. Though an admitted pop novice, Otter couldn't have picked a better confederate than Costello, an artist whose taste in songs has seldom been tainted by trend.
Together, they weave material from disparate sources--including a slate of compelling Costello material, a pair of Brian Wilson's evocative "Pet Sounds" confessionals, a Tom Waits song from Francis Ford Coppola's One from the Heart (oddly, though effectively, coupled in medley with McCartney's "Junk"), an Abba song, and the Beatles' "For No One"--into a musical tapestry of stately power and grace. Costello sparingly uses his voice as seasoning throughout, though his masterful touch is everywhere. Otter's novice pop singing reveals an easy knack for jazz phrasing that should tempt further explorations and a warmth that belies the rigidity that's so often a byproduct of classical training. Most gratifying of all, this album ultimately achieves what's become one of the loftiest plateaus in Pop music: common ground. --Jerry McCulley

Loved this CD .......2006-06-13
Who would pair Costello and an opera singer?? Elvis, and somehow it works. I really love the tone and moodiness of it and lyrics that talk about love and life, failure and success. It's soulful, in a contemplative way, music for those tucked away, rainy days .
I LOVE this CD!.......2005-09-01
Finally, an opera singer who knows how to channel her Classical training into a sound that is, as one critic aptly described it, "what pop singers would sound like if they could actually sing"! Although Elvis Costello does not join Ms. von Otter very often in the vocals, when he does they harmonize beautifully. With great melodies (some beautiful, some catchy) and sensitive (but not sappy) lyrics, this album makes a fine addition to any CD collection.
Costello Partners with Hubris and Yields Variable Results.......2005-05-08
Having just heard Elvis Costello's masterful collaboration with Burt Bacharach, "Painted from Memory", for the first time this past month, I had high hopes for this equally unusual partnership with mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter released in 2001. This time, however, Costello acts as arranger and producer, and it is von Otter who is front and center on vocals. She is among the most revered of singers on the opera and recital stages, and she has impressed me in the past, in particular, with her Dejanira in the 2002 Marc Minkowski-led performance of Handel's "Hercules", among many other roles she has embodied. Here she is called upon to be a pop chanteuse, and while the beauty of her voice is inarguable in any setting, her ability to interpret the diverse lyrics in these songs is far more debatable. This is where a Marianne Faithfull, a Blossom Dearie or even a Joni Mitchell could capture more of the underlying feeling with a fraction of the vocal power von Otter can provide but with twice the nuance. There is a rather sterile sameness to the performances here, somewhat jazz-inflected in a cocktail lounge manner at times and at other times, rather morose and dirge-like.
Take, for example, her rendition of Brian Wilson's "Don't Ask (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)" from the legendary "Pet Sounds" album. It moves so glacially that it actually extricates the romantic subtext almost surgically. The same can be said for Jessie Mae Robinson's "The Other Woman", which has at least Magnus Persson's vibraphone to provide relief from the tedium. She's better on the other "Pet Sounds" classic, "You Still Believe in Me", where she cannily soars with the chorus, though Costello damages it by adding some odd, muffled rapping in the background. Ironically, it is on the Costello compositions where the recording most noticeably flails. The opener "No Wonder" starts as a "Greensleeves"-like madrigal and then turns into Beatlesque pop; "Baby Plays Around" seems to suffer from exhaustion by all parties; the two Fleshquartet collaborations, "Rope" and "Just a Curio", sound somewhat like extraterrestrial hymns done in a series of minor keys; and the closing title track, "For the Stars" includes peppy, Beach Boys-sounding harmonies which escape her grasp. In fact, "Just a Curio" would have been a more appropriate title for this entire recording.
On the other hand, the Gallic flavor of Benny Andersson's accordion effectively informs her rendition of Tom Waits' "Broken Bicycles", which melds perfectly with Costello's vocal on Paul McCartney's "Junk". Speaking of Andersson, a fellow Scandinavian, von Otter admirably covers a piano-led ABBA ballad, "Like an Angel Passing Through My Room". She also displays a meticulously casual bounce on Lennon-McCartney's "For No One", though it stops rather abruptly. Von Otter acquits herself surprisingly well on the jazzy "Shamed into Love", written by another unlikely duo, Costello and Rubén Blades, and performed as almost a smokier variation of Bacharach's "Alfie". And speaking of Bacharach, she does a nice turn on the lovely "This House Is Empty Now" from the 1998 Bacharach-Costello disc. Costello and von Otter are masters of their craft, but I think some of the collaborations reflect simply irreconcilable differences. While Costello seems to have an insatiable desire to expand musically, his hubris here appears to constrain the often preternatural vocal skill von Otter displays on the opera and recital stage. Consequently, what we have here is a nice album, a generous one with eighteen tracks, that doesn't seem to capitalize on either contributor's talent fully.
what's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?.......2004-04-22
Nothing's funny about this boring duo. I picked this up FREE at my library and it didn't take me too many tracks to see why it was donated. The musical arrangements are hapless and dull, and her voice is Dion without the Vegas power finale. Come to think of it, the lyrics remind me of Dion; they are as saccharine as anything Dion has ever sung. I wasted a blank CD on this limp, sleepy pairing of two otherwise good artists.
No life in her (pop) art.......2004-03-15
I am a big fan of both artists and wanted very much for this combination to work. It avoids the traditional trap of "oversinging" the pop material. But a few years after its release, in these American Idol era, is that really such a terror for pop music any more? So-called oversinging seems pretty popular these days!
The big problem is that von Otter has not found a way to communicate any emotion in this scaled-down form of singing. All her classical techniques are stripped away, and there's nothing to replace them. Sure, her voice is gorgeous, but it sounds exactly the same no matter what the lyrical content. The songs could have been made up of nonsense syllables for all the emotional life she communicates.
Deeply disappointing - but someone, somewhere, will figure out how to bring classically trained singers to the wonderful pop song repertoire that has been composed over the past 50 years. Elvis may very well be the person to do it, but not on this album.

Arguably UK glam rock is the least regarded pop genre to emerge in the last 50 years or so (although UK folk rock might run it a close second) so how bad must be the Brit glam rock records that bombed even when glam was king? The surprising answer, after listening to this cheeky compilation, is actually not bad at all. The line notes are fun, and just the right side of tongue in cheek, to leave you unsure whether this entire project isn't meant as the most collosal joke. And yet, as is pointed out, these bands and tracks do represent some sort of pure pop ideal. They arrived overnight, no agenda, no tedious "development", no slick marketing (no marketing at all in some cases) and a do it yourself philosophy that is pure punk. The sleevenotes also give a scholarly history of glam, and the three "great" glam traditions: art school rock (David Bowie, T Rex, Roxy Music etc), the "Chinnichap" teeny bands (Suzi Quatro, Sweet) and most bizarrely, and disturbingly of all, the "brickies in mascara" phenomenon and the stomping "British West Midlands Sound"(Slade, Mud). Junkshop examples of all three will be found on the compilation. I've always felt that glam rock principally developed to service the needs of the footwear industry. Viz, while wearing stack soles of any height, the wearer soon discovers that only two sorts of dancing are possible: a stepping forward and stepping back dance, and a dance where you stand still and stomp one foot on the ground. Glam tunes are perfect for these moves, but that is about all. I'm also reminded on the comment about the early 18th century "graveyard school" of English poets by Kenneth Clarke to the effect that within a few years of the fashion all possible combinations of owls, ivy and moonlight had been exhausted. Read the same for glam lyrics except substitute "rebels", "revolution" and "school". Overall, enormous fun and great for pricking the pomposity of muso-snob friends
Bubblemetal Powerpop!.......2003-10-23
one: hooky! if you're a fan of 60's bubblegum/garage, 70-80 power pop and glam, this is all you...two: just about all the artists are total unknowns in the U.S., ergo, it's like discovering buried treasure...Enjoy!

Taking the plunge..........2006-03-07
As another reviewer noted, this album marks OMD's departure from the more synthy/new-wavy/electronic sounds they embraced on earlier releases, especially Dazzle Ships.
Although Junk Culture doesn't fully embrace the pop culture as the follow up album, Crush, did, there was still a notable pop influence on this release. I don't say that as a bad thing, either. Good pop is still good music. It's just a shame that there's so much *bad* pop, but I digress.
Junk Culture took a little bit of time to sink in with me. I admit it. I love Crush. I suppose part of that is sentimental, as it was my girlfriend of the time (and wife now, so many years later) that exposed me to OMD via Crush. I had always liked Organisation and their other, older albums. Once I fell for Crush, though, I think the beauty of Junk Culture was finally exposed to me.
The great thing about Junk Culture is exactly its merging of the quirkiness of OMD's earlier material with the more pop-oriented melodies of the time. Those two elements came together in Junk Culture to create a genuinely unique work. You just can't go wrong with the eccentric Tesla Girls, the emotion of Love and Violence or the Latin flair of All Wrapped Up.
Any fan of the '80s owes it to themselves to own this album. It may not be my favorite OMD album, but it does a great job of displaying both sides of the OMD coin. It has also stood the test of time, in my opinion sounding as brilliant today as it did 20+ years ago.
Junk Culture-Loved The Title. It became my first OMD purchase........2006-01-23
After buying this I fell in love with OMD and the album spent a lot of time on my turntable(dating myself). I never cared for instrumentals and always skip them so I ignored the title track, but the rest of the album was great. The songs have aged pretty well and my favorites are ones most people ignore. "Love & Violence", and "Hard Day" are brilliant. "Love & Violence" captures the behavior of a couple going through difficulties in their relationship with chilling accuracy and "Hard Day", does the same for the working class. This is a great CD and is enjoyable on many levels.
Pretty good.......2005-12-12
There are a few songs on here that most people will definately know right away if you're already familiar with OMD. Locomotion, Tesla Girls and Talking Loud and Clear are all available on the OMD singles collection. As with all OMD, there are a few lesser known gems on this album as well. Songs like Hard Day, White Trash, and my favorite song, Never Turn Away. Although I don't like this album nearly to the extent that I like Organisation, Architecture or their self titled debut, this is far better than Dazzle Ships. OMD never went through a time where I disliked all of their music, but there are definately alums that are superior. This one falls kind of in the middle. It seems like they abandoned their more introspective and thought provoking music in favor of poppier and more radio friendly sounds. Not that this is all bad, OMD were successful at everything they attempted.
OMD's zenith.......2005-12-08
A very different perspective than the reviews i've read here is that 'Junk Culture' is OMD's peak! This rls very succissfully blends the 'art' w/ the 'pop'. The previous rls, 'Dazzle Ships', doesn't have hooks to demand the listener play the album over and over, while the next rls, 'Crush', is contaminated by the peppering of crassly calculated careerist "hit singles" (souless Stephen Hague produced and banished all quirk factor, except the singer's distinctive(!) voice) that unapologetically marked OMD's short wade into mainstream impotentcy. In my mind, 'Junk Culture' is their final chapter, w/ a few of the more interesting tracks from 'Crush' as an addendum. DISCLAIMER of ADOLESCENT SUBJECTIVITY: this lp took over my turntable in 1985 when i was developmentally in "teenage sponge mode". Still, objectively speaking, it is the culmination of their intelligent quirky art-pop aesthetic. Beautiful arranging/production, and artwork too!
not my fav.......2005-10-31
Not as melodic as there other albums. More experimental but still has some unbelievable songs. I suggest omd singles it has all the goodies on it.

Late 80's power pop excellence.......2007-02-08
TPOH were alternative before there was such a term. And as such I have more time for them than anything else released that would come under such a banner. They also sit in the power pop category nicely due to their sprightly rock 'n' roll with guitar solos and Moe Bergs energetic delivery. And there is more than just a touch of Cheap Trick with this mob - the whole comedy rock and amusing anecdotes bombarding the listener with good time vibes.
This album starts off with Hard to Laugh, a fun rocker despite being about some guy complaining about his girlfriend. And that is actually fairly typical for the album. But the bands buoyant delivery and the tidy production job makes it possible for quirky, depressing or strangely touching topics to be fun to listen to. And that is a real accomplishment by the bands main man, Moe Berg, who is the sole songwriter on this release.
Looking back on this album before putting my fingers to the keyboard it's interesting how well this album has weathered the passing years. Sure, if it's metal your after, go elsewhere, but if your in the right mood this album can still provide a fun listen. It may not cure world poverty but even after all the music that has passed through my ears personal teenage anthems like I'm An Adult Now and Looking for Girls still put a smile on my dial.
Fans of Cheap Trick (their funny bits) should give this mob a look - and also any fans of AOR who might be after something a little more whimsical and less tear jerking should also give this disc a listen. It's a very good starting point to explore this band as some of their later albums such as Wheres the Bone are a little more understated and more focussed on Moe Berts vocals to the detriment of the band feeling present on this album.
Highly recommended rock 'n' roll.
TPOH - excellent band that slipped under the public's radar........2007-01-28
All of TPOH's cds are good to great and Love Junk rates as their best. Too bad the general public completely missed this tremendous talent.
Good to hear them again.......2006-03-11
Had a tape of this some time ago; made the mistake of putting my tape holder over the gas tank on a long drive when I moved. The tape actually melted into the the back of tape holder. Had trouble finding the CD of it in stores; fortunately I found it here. So what do I actually think about it?
Minor late 80's classic by another great Canadain export; aggressive guitar hooks, quirky lyrics sung with abandon by Moe Berg and beautiful accompaniment by Kris Abbott & Leslie Stanwyck, all done to a boppin beat. Power pop at its finest.
How to spot a classic in the I-Pod age.......2005-05-22
So I'm going through my old CD collection and loading songs up on my 40 gig (every song you could possibly want) monster, and I pull this disc out for the first time in at least 5 years. What a revelation. I put every song except "Killed by Love" on the I-Pod. I haven't done that with too many discs. Along with really catchy power pop tunes; there are brilliant lyrics throughout. "I'm an adult now" was the single and it is a great song, but it is far from being the standout cut."She's so young", "Conciousness raising as a social tool", and "Beautiful White" are my 3 faves. The chorus of "She's so young" is classic. "She's so young , she' got the answers. She doesn't need to question herself like I do." As my child grows into a teenager that line will begin to take on a different meaning than it did the first time I heard fifteen or so years ago. Whatever happened to these guys anyway? Great group.
TPOH.......2005-02-19
If you only know TPOH by the tune "I'm an Adult Now", you should start with this disc to hear more from the band. "Adult" is a good, humorous track, but far from the best the band has to offer on "Love Junk". Do not judge the band by that song alone.
I had heard "Adult" many times over, but it was when I read Todd Rundgren produced the entire disc that I actually purchased it. His "touch" is on the disc and that is a good thing!
Moe Berg is my kind of tunesmith. I really like "Hard to Laugh", the kick off track. I was hooked! Other cuts that caught my ear are "She's So Young", "Looking For Girls", and "Man's Best Friend". Clever lyrics like the chorus for MBF:
-Cause I'm not the kind you want for your boyfriend,
but I'll be your man's best friend.-
I love it!
I know that this has been a hard disc for me to find, so grab when you can. "Love Junk" is not junk.

Something new, interesting & definetly different.......2006-05-02
This record took me forever to get. Actually I'm still not sure if I "get" it, but when a record has rave reviews all over the net and I think it's bad I doubt myself just a little bit until I have listened to it to death. That being said I have been rocking this record in my MP3 player for a solid month and I am starting to see what those cats are talking about. But only sort of. Emcee Baje One and producer Snafu have a special chemistry here that really does seem kind of scientific, or maybe that's cause of the topics to rap about: Time travel, plutonium, liquefying ice, etc. Needless to say this album is a little different, but they do it well and with precision. Baje One is a solid emcee with a dope flow and a confidant swagger that is present in many NY representers. Snafu makes beats that bounce and weave around the lyrics usually with only one thing being steady: the dusty drums. At times comical they have created an album that is truly nerd rap, not because they are using big words but they literally are talking about things that my chemistry genius girlfriend would love. Not to say they don't get their straight up hip hop on either though. On "House Wigger" (14) they address those who may be posing as something they are not (and hip hop seems to be full of em). If you are looking for something a little different and fun this album is for you, just be prepared for something you have never heard and may never hear again. Junk Science = dopeness on record, it just takes forever to really sink in.
Off the hook!.......2005-12-04
these kids definitely have something going here. fresh beats, simple, but intelligent lyrics, and style out the wazoo! I didn't know what to expect when I picked this one up on a friend's recommendation, actually I kind of hate the kid that told me to buy it, but now I'm glad I know that kid, cause he put me on to the coolest indie rap record of the year.
This is album is not Junk.......2005-11-21
Junk Science's album lived up to all my expectations. The production is real percussive, and gritty, like 90's hip hop, not like all that synthy radio rap that seems like it's everywhere (and getting boring). Junk science's lyrics are straight forward, and sometimes really funny, but this isn't a comedy record, my favorites songs so far are "House Wigger" and "That's the Way", both songs that detail this dou's hard work to get as far as they have and some of the obstacles they had to get past.

A pretty even-steven stylistic split between project partners Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening, Dub Narcotic Sound System) and Doug Martsch (Built to Spill), this multi-faceted disc could practically serve as a textbook for an "Intro to Indie Rock" class. From goofy surf-pop like "Don't Touch My Bikini" (which recalls the B-52s' pre-fame giddiness) to intricate proto-progressive experiments like "Freedom Rider," the duo pushes consistently forward with both confidence and offhand charm. Taken piece by piece, God Don't Make No Junk is a nifty pop collection, but digested whole, it's much more: it's an affirmation of the stubbornly D.I.Y. ideal that's made the Pacific Northwest such a creative magnet for the last decade, and a signal that that spirit is still there in full force. --David Sprague

Even better for fans of Built to Spill & Beat Happening.......2007-04-13
I just heard about this band recently, so I don't know a whole lot about the Halo Benders.
Built to Spill and Beat Happening have been two bands I have enjoyed for a few years now. When I found out about The Halo Benders I just had to order a couple.
The combination of Calvin Johnson's(Beat Happening) voice along w/ Doug Martsch's(Built to Spill) vocals intrigued me to hear it for myself.
And it does work. Maybe sounds a little "out there" to some- but hey that's what I like.
Calvin Johnson has a really deep voice and Doug, well it's hard to describe his voice, but it's lighter(or shinier) with a lot more range and melody. Sometimes they use their styles together or separate, makes for an interesting listen. Singing in different pitches.
My favorite song is ("single"): "Don't Touch My Bikini"
Might sound a little challenging for listeners, if you're not familiar with these two bands(Built to Spill & Beat Happening).
- To me it's a joy!
Can't go wrong with Halo Benders.......2007-01-09
Want to hear something that you will never hear on FM radio? Here you go. Martsch and Johnson are a unique combination. Not as good as The Rebel's Not In, but that's hard to top.
Okay, alright!.......2000-06-04
this is the perfect cd to listen to in june, with your shirt off, after a few beers, while cutting your cool indie rock friends hair and talking about how you have no money for toppings on the pizza. sound gross? yeah, it is. a great wispy pop cd that is hummable and amiable and will make you smile and want to start a band called the Malo Henders.
the fantastic duo.......1999-01-11
what can I say! Built to spill crossed with beat happening. what else could any modern rock fan want?
You an Indie Music Lover? Here's you CD........1998-07-16
If you like Built to Spill, you will love this album. It has all of the beautiful guitar work of Doug and his scratchy vocals, but it also has the oddly complemting vocals of the Calvin Johnson from the Dub Nation. Great intertwining vocals and music like it should be.

Before striking out on their own, Washington, D.C.-based DJs and producers Ali "Dubfire" Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi had already established themselves as ace remixers for everyone from De'Lacy to the Rolling Stones. Here, the Iranian-American house team known as Deep Dish shows it is just as adept at building original dance tracks as it is at giving new life to tedious pop stars. Junk Science gets rolling with a propulsive Everything but the Girl collaboration called "The Future of the Future (Stay Gold)," which matches Tracey Thorn's angelic voice with the duo's restless beats. But things really take off as Deep Dish further unravel their exploratory rhythms and exhilarating electronic sweeps. Cinematic effects add tension and sensuality to tracks like "My Only Sin" and "Persepolis," while the group stays in touch with its more carnal side with pumping cuts like "Chocolate City (Love Songs)" and "Stranded," one of 1997's most revelatory club hits. --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
Their later stuff is much better...........2007-02-20
Not only is their later music much better, I take real issue with the lyrics to "Mohammad Is Jesus"; they don't conform to reality!
A Dish That Digs Deep.......2002-05-17
Proving that Deep Dish are no one-trick ponies, Dubfire and Sharam release their own album of original music, which features thumping house, mid-tempo grooves, and ambient touches. These Washington, D.C.-based DJs bring to the table much more than beats and rhythm; they compose well-structured melodies that carry these tracks. "Mohammed is Jesus," "The Future of the Future (with Everything but the Girl)" and "Susuhi" feature Deep Dish doing what they do best: thumping house with a disco twist. But they also serve up a really seductive ambient number in the title track, and the downtempo "My Only Sin" is downright infectious and hypnotic. This CD didn't compltetely grab me at first, but, as with all good CDs, it grows on you.
What can I say?.......2000-09-06
It's been out for a couple of years now but still cuts you open with it's unadultered originality and funkiness.
Junk Science has it all. Personally I'm not a great fan of Tracy Thorn (who sings on Future of the Future) but that is my only complaint on what is a seamless soundtrack to any film you could ever imagine.
Atmospheric, trancy and funky. Junk Science will open your mind to the quality and originality of Deep Dish. If you are more interested in a club-friendly set then get Yoshiesque, their killer double album. Can these chaps do no wrong?
Atmospheric Grooves.......2000-05-05
Dubfire and Sharam create lovely, funky grooves that stretch out forever into confident, seductive soundscapes -- as evidenced by their extensive remix work for artists such as De'Lacy ("Hideaway" - a bona fide club smash), Kristine W ("Land Of The Living), and EBTG ("Wrong") who also collaborate on "The Future Of The Future (Stay Gold)" - the first single from "Junk Science". The other singles, "Stranded" and "Mohammed Is Jesus...", elevate club music to a higher plane.
The Deep Dish positive vibe is more laid back than the prog trance tendencies of early collaborator BT, though both artists have the same deft touch at creating expansive atmospheric dance music. Deep Dish achieves what Brian Eno's ambient experimentation did in the 70's: use technology to open up space and promote peace of mind and creativity. Deep Dish evolves those intentions for today's beat crazy audience. Definitely a "best of genre" cd! Outstanding track: "Chocolate City (love songs)". Ten and half minutes of sublime perfection.
a lil bit of cool.......2000-01-25
This album is in one word COOL. However it is not consistent and sometimes a little bit dorky and thus the rating. Tracks 7 and 11 are my personal faves and serve as excellent driving music, especially with a sub. Worth checking out if you like their other work.
