The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Cd.......2007-06-27

This cd is Great!! not one song on the album that you would skip.. album is way better than the band's last 2 cd!! a must have!

4 out of 5 stars A bit of a change in pace in my opinion........2007-06-08

"Keep it going" while far from being unrecognizably Mad Caddies, is certianly more toward the more mellow, reggae style they do so well. That being said one of the things that first intrigued me about the Caddies back in the day was their varied repertoire and I was kind of left wishing for more upbeat punk-style tempo changes as well as the vocal variation that where less common in this CD. It is by no means a bad record, just differen't. All in all a definite must for fans, but I would use another CD to introduce someone to the Mad Caddies.

4 out of 5 stars Mad Caddies Best to Date.......2007-06-06

These guys keep getting better and better. Each album seems to have them growing musically and lyrically. Fun lyrics on a great Reggae/Ska Beat. If you always thought the Mad Caddies as a middle of the road band with occasional strokes of brilliance, try this album out, more genius here than ever before

5 out of 5 stars Super review #4!!!.......2007-05-03

Wow, what an excellent album. Closer in sound to Just One More than any other, this mostly slow album is great fun and it's 2 fastish songs are totally rad. Lazy Bones rivals Leavin' as a geeat catchy tune and the quite slow but upbeat 'Today' will stick in your mind as you sit through your day at work, waiting to get home for another listen!

Generally I prefer the fasetr Caddies songs, but the slower ones here are fantastic too, perhaps better than their previous stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Might be the Best work yet!.......2007-05-02

Hard to follow up the album "Just One More" and how could anyone not LOVE "Drinking For 11" This AMAZING Album shows just how diverse these guys are! Excellent vocals melded with the boys skills on all that they play. This album is superb and I highly recommend it! Every song is done to the highest standard. If you have not seen this band live you NEED TO GO! You will not regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Kickass cd.......2006-12-25

this band is a really great group. all of their songs are some of the best ive heard in a long time. anyone who loves pop/indy rock should buy this cd.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2006-12-15

if you like melody and originality.
with their 2 eps and 1 full-length the only thing going against them is that even though all the songs are individual and different they have a same soundingness, which hopefully in time will bloom into something good.

5 out of 5 stars Can't miss an episode.......2006-09-22

This is as good as you get when it comes to Pop. The songs are catcy enough without getting cheesy, and it makes me respect Sherwood for making this album. There is a sense of loss of home, which comes from Track 4 Lake Tahoe. Filed amongst a lot of TV's and stereo's, this is a good find, and probably one of the better pop/rock acts for 2005. I would say download Learn to Sing & Gentleman of Promise, but you can pick this one up used from $6.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2006-06-05

thi is one of my favoites. i really can not wait for more songs from these guys.

Sherwood is way talented and deffinatly a band on the rise! This is a must have cd. Check out www.purevolume.com/sherwood for more songs or check out their website www.sherwoodmusic.net The song "The Summer Sends Its Love" (not on this cd) was also on the show Radio Free Roscoe. Keep on singing, Sherwood!

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet—79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Stephen Duffy Keeps Going Strong.......2004-01-09

As a fan of Stephen Duffy's work since his "Tin Tin" days, I've noticed a steady progression in his work that, contrary to some reviewers, does indicate both risk-taking and experimentation. In his latest outing with the Lilac Time, Duffy has produced a true masterpiece. Don't be fooled by the faux 70s cover art; this album may have borrowed from the Nick Drake/Fairport Convention folk standards of that era, but it is just as firmly rooted in contemporary music as well. Incorporating a soulful, poetic and sometimes melancholic tone, Duffy evokes moods and images that reflect an ever-growing sense of maturity and poignancy. Take the worldliness of "So Far Away", or the sheer beauty of "I Wasn't Scared of Flying" as examples of how he evades the predictably introspective lyrical trappings that often accompany this style of folk pop. Or there's the quintessentially Duffyesque "Don't Feed the Rats" ("The world is full of missing girls/ Geraldine, Janes and Ophelias"). Also of note is the excellent hidden 13th track, which unlike many end-of-album songs actually finishes off the cd quite nicely. From the Lilac Time's self-titled debut to 2001's "Lilac 6", this band has made extraordinarily original, intelligent and catchy pop-folk music. "Keep Going" is an exception only in that it improves upon the earlier albums and exceeds all expectations. My vote for album of 2003. Keep going indeed!

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best album - EVER!.......2003-08-29

For fans of Stephen Duffy and The Lilac Time, each new album comes as a precious, and highly anticipated, gift. Stephen's music has been my favorite since I was a young American transplant in 1988 Surrey grazing in the local music shop where the shopkeeper told me Mr. Duffy had "abandoned Duran Duran", and I had to know why. The Lilac Time was as good a reason as I could possibly have imagined.

Much time has passed and not without a great deal of maturation on the part of Stephen Duffy. Each successive offering (including a stint as a solo artist in the 90's) has explored new musical and lyrical territory, and expertly gleaned the most succulent morsels for his melodic recipes. Fortunate for us lucky enough to have discovered this rich musical trove, his obscurity has ultimately led to a musical career untainted by the need to prove anything.

"Keep Going" delivers the goods in spades. This album is chock-full of the elegant, delicious, and sensitive musical moments we have come to expect from this masterful songsmith. Not only that, but this album appears to have been a work that is completely faithful to his muse, without the imposition of the usual pop imperatives. The arrangements are brilliantly spare and beautiful. Stephen's unforced singing delicately delivers his brutally honest, agonic, and witty lyrics without a hint of self-consciousness.

Today it's my birthday (33) and my most cherished gift is the imported "Keep Going". I'm listening right now and thanking the gods of music that Mr. Duffy shares this planet with us.

5 out of 5 stars The best album of 2003!.......2003-08-18

Keep Going by Stephen Duffy and the Lilac Time was the best album of 2003, period. An amazingly beautiful and emotional work of art from start to finish. While I do have my own personal favorites, not a single track on this CD can be identified as sub-par. My own favorites: Bank Holiday Monday, So Far Away, and the hidden 13th track, An Open Book.

Album Description

The popular "Synthpop Club Anthems" series continues, with another yearly installment. This CD highlights some of the ultra-club-friendly synthpop anthems from the 2003-2004 releases, including some of the most popular acts in the scene like De/Vision, Cosmicity, Real Life, and T.O.Y.

The "Synthpop Club Anthems" series appeals to some fans of classic synthpop along the lines of New Order, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, etc. but also intends to show the genre's forward-looking trends, fusing together different electronic dance elements from futurepop to trance. This is synthpop that can appeal to dance club fans in pretty much any scene, blending pounding electronics with catchy melodies and memorable, meaningful lyrics (a key ingredient to modern synthpop).

Synthpop is by no means a stale, stagnant sound that does nothing but re-live the sounds of the 80's, but instead moves forward, always expanding, evolving, and reaching out to new fans. "Synthpop Club Anthems 3" continues to extend that reach. Old fans will love it, and new listeners will pay attention!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Better Than Volume 1.......2005-02-20

When Volume 1 of this series was originally released I pick it up. Back then it had a different cover. I'm a child of the 80s so remixes are something I like. I was largely disappointed. I had heard that this volume would be worth picking up (in other words: better than the first one) and they were right.

Where the first volume really was specifically synthpop that might be played at a synthpop or 80s retro flavored club many of the tracks on this volume could be played in any mainstream club and be enjoyed. They are focused on the beats and rhythm: the stuff that makes you want to get up and dance (or go running or whatever you feel like doing whenever you feel that extra energy from the music).

The disc starts off very well with a new track from Real Life (an 80s favorite back with an updated sound for the new millennium) that is just as good as the album track but with more of a club flavor. It's a nice way to start off the CD but my favorite track is track number two. Syrian's "Space Overdrive" is a new favorite. It has a hint of the true synthpop/80s bent but definitely geared up for the club.

The album stays strong from there (other favorites are from T.O.Y and Daybehavior) with the exception of the Alien#Six13 track which sounded a bit flat to me. The final track from Intuition is good but not as good as the original, in my opinion.

Despite a little falter towards the end this album is definitely worth picking up.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Dance Mix Compilation.......2005-01-26

A Different Drum is a great Record Label, which doesn't just sign Acts because they are commercial. They sign great musicians and try to provide it for everyone who wants to listen. One of the things they do regularly release compilations which have different themes, this being the latest (Volume 3) of the Club Anthems. You will love this if you like to boogey at the Club (particularly Trance), or if you like the extended remixes of some of the great bands of the 80's. Or if you just like to bound around your living room while singing along to catchy songs.

1) Real Life - Oblivion (Nevarakka Mix) - Back to the 80's. Real Life were famous for the superb Send Me an Angel. They are still going strong, and here is a remix from their latest CD. The style is definitely 80's but more mature.

2) Syrian - Space Overdrive (Extended) - Great Synths and thumping beats. Vocals have plenty of echo to create a very trancey feel. The chorus is great and will have you singing along waving your hands in the air (or is that just me).

3) Daybehaviour - Close Your Eyes (Activated Mix) - Great female vocals, and progressive synths. Definitely Trance orientated beat, again with a superb chorus. Lots of variety in the synths with a good melody.

4) Neuropa - Every Second (Extended Mix) - this is great. I have bought all of Neuropas CDs based on this song and the free downloads here at Amazon. Neuropa deserve to be big, as their songs are very catchy, and well produced. Great melody and vocals. Check out their album Born, which is my favourite CD of 2004.

5) Cosmicity - Abort (DJ RAM Mix) - Cosmicity are great, but alas no more. The vision of Mark Nicholas, who has reinvented himself and dropped the name Cosmicity. Abort is probably one of my least favourite songs by Cosmicity, but DJ Ram does an excellent dance remix. There is plenty of bass and a variety of great synth sounds throughout.

6) T.O.Y - Another Lovesong (Trance Mix by Massiv in Mensch) - This song is superb. As the remix says it is a Trance mix, but the original song is quite trancey anyway. This song has a very catchy tune and chorus. The vocals and the lyrics, along with the catchy tune are what makes this song stand out. This is my favourite song by T.O.Y, and this is also my favourite mix. A thumping beat with great melodic synths, and soaring vocals singing lines like : The Moon is my Galactic Spy.

7) The Dignity of Labour - XRV (Nevarakka Mix) - Great 80's style vocals (reminiscent of Real Life). Nevarakka again with a great soaring Club remix.

8) Droom - Stay (Delobbo Mix) - Slightly different in that this remix starts off simple and then gradually builds up. This song would not be out of place in any Club. The vocals are great, very different, again with an 80's feel. The remix is great, very up to date.

9) De/Vision - Digital Dream (Analogue at 46hz by Icon of Coil) - Another great remix. Feels slightly different to the original version, because this definitely feels like an Icon of Coil mix. The vocals are very simple but great (De/Vision a great band that have been around for a few years often compared to Depeche Mode).

10) Neuroactive - New Sensation - No remix needed here, as Neuroactive produce very dancey songs anyway. Great thumping beat, with minimal synth effect vocals.

11) AlienSix13 - Highway to the Sun - Again no remix, plenty of BPM. Almost an instumental as just occasional vocals. In the middle and at then end the song breaks down, and this is my favourite part. Piano style synths play out a great melody, and then the beat kicks back in. Plenty of variety in the song.

12) Intuition - Staring Off at Nothing (Beatfreq Mix) - I like Intuition, they have produced some great songs, and I have bought their previous CDs. This song is from their forthcoming CD, but quite dissapointing. Check out the free downloads here at Amazon, and see what you think of their previous material. The remix is very simple. The chorus shows what Intuition are capable of, but unfortunately it is not long enough, and the rest of the song just washes over you. Nice and pleasant, but nothing special.

Conclusion: Another superb collection from a Different Drum. Not just thrown together, but every song has been cherry picked to make up this CD. Buy this, and you are sure to want to by most of the artists individual CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Best Alternative-Electronic Compilation CD from 2004!.......2005-01-25

Whether you are looking for the new sounds of the future or expanding on the sounds of the '80s, Synthpop Club Anthems 3 is an excellent choice. One of my most listened to CDs from 2004 includes some great songs which mix 80s synthpop with newer forms of electronic dance music! Daybehavior's "Close Your Eyes" soon became one of my favourites as it is a great mix of synthpop with trance and very, very sensual female vocals (fans of Kylie Minogue's Fever or Lightyears albums would definitely enjoy this). Neuroactive's "New Sensation" will appeal to fans of Cabaret Voltaire with its edgy-electronic sound. (Can't wait for the new CD N-Gin to be released!) Neuropa's "Every Second" amazes you with a great melody and vocals a la Erasure or the Pet Shop Boys. Italian band Syrian has yet another amazing single with the catchy, fun and oh so addictive "Space Overdrive" - one of the best tracks on the CD. All the other tracks are excellent as well and will appeal to any '80s fanatic into New Order, Visage, Thompson Twins as well as individuals into Hi NRG, trance and techno. Oh! did I mention the excellent single "Oblivion" by Real Life.. famous for their classic song "Send Me An Angel" is include in a great extended remix! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Too good for words.......2005-01-24

With Synthpop heavy hitters such as Real Life, Syrian, and Droom, this is a must have CD - it's that simple. A Different Drum does it again!!

4 out of 5 stars An impressive Synthpop delight.......2005-01-23

I cannot say enough great things about the record label( "A Different Drum" ) that makes these samplers, as well as many of the artists on them, available to the general public.

This isn't your average cookie cutter slapped together compialation. This is a very well crafted collection of rare remix editions of great songs from some of the premier artists of the genre. And when I say this I don't mean a few great songs and a bunch of filler. All the artists featured on this CD definitely deserve to be here.

Although I am fairly literate in the world of synthpop and had at least heard of most of the featured bands on here, I was fairly surprised at the quality of the songs and how great they all are. The title is self explanatory: Dancable, club friendly beats in the classic synthpop tradition of combining catchy beats and well written melodic songs together. Synthpop is more than just dance music; you don't have to be in a club to want to hear it because the songs themself are very catchy and addictive.
The synthpop featured here in my opinion is in the tradition of New Order and Depeche Mode, dark and mysterious.

Definitely worth the money. I've already made the discovery that Neuropa and Syrian are bands that I should not have overlooked, and wont anymore, and also that I really need to purchase some of those Cosmicity items on my wish list. It doesn't matter how much you know or don't know about synthpop, this is a quality collection that will definitely help you discover some great bands, which is what A Different Drum had in mind all along. It has certainly helped me =)

5 out of 5 stars The best album of 2003!.......2004-08-08

"Keep Going" by Stephen Duffy and the Lilac Time was unquestionably the best album of 2003, period. An amazingly beautiful and emotional work of art from start to finish. While I do have my own personal favorites, not a single track on this CD can be identified as sub-par. My own favorites: Bank Holiday Monday, So Far Away, and the hidden 13th track, An Open Book.

5 out of 5 stars He's back!.......2004-04-24

Stephen Duffy could have been one of those "I wonder what happened to..." people after helping form Duran Duran, but dropping out before they hit it big. But he kept at it, with a variety of bands and solo efforts. He finally hit on success with his mid-80s synthpop classic track "Kiss Me" and his album "The Ups and Downs". He went out to form the band The Lilac Time and recorded a string of popular records.

Now Stephen Duffy and The Lilac Time are back with a brand new album, showing a great amount of lyrical and musical maturity, but still keeping that very approachable sound that helped his 80s popularity. My favorite track is "Don't Feed The Rats" which is an emotionally touching song about the plight of missing women. If you liked any of Stephen Duffy's previous efforts, you should give this one a listen.

It' not always easy to find a "swinging" Sax/Organ Combo anymore. This one certainly fits the bill.I didn't realize Plas Johnson was still around.

5 out of 5 stars Back to the tenor battles.......2002-03-10

A fine session with two of the greatest jazz sax players. They are supported by a swinging rhythm section. It is good to hear again Gene Ludwig after all these years. To me, Red Holloway's Serenade in blue is a gem.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2001-11-30

Just picked up this wonderful disc.

It's a feast for sore ears.

Two magnificent tenor men, Gene Ludwig on B3 (bass), Melvin Sparks - guitar, Kenny
Washington - drums. No string bass of any type - shucks. And the other half of the
genius is delivered by Rudy Van Gelder - who - oh, man - can't even begin to describe
his greatness. If he recorded it - it's at least half good. The mountain came to
Mohammed because, as usual - the musicians wound up in Englewood, NJ - formerly
Monk's Hackensack, to record where Rudy Van Gelder has been ruling for many
years.

If you can hear "Serenade In Blue" from this disc and not get chills, you're just not
warm enough. "Cry Me A River" will dehydrate you. Beautiful playing, arranging and
unreal recording.

Thank you, guys.

REB-CD-1127

RED ALLEN - Lonesome and Blue: The Complete County Recordings
REB-CD-1128
Playing Time - 70:11

Originally from Pigeon Roost, Kentucky, Harley "Red" Allen lived in Dayton, Ohio for most of his career. He formed his first band "The Kentuckians" in the early 1950s, and he is one of the pioneers of bluegrass. His singing in trios with The Osborne Brothers were enough to knock your socks off. They won a contract with MGM Records and appeared on the WWVA Jamboree from Wheeling, W.V. in the mid-50s. Differences of opinion over a progressive vs. traditional approach to their music probably led to them parting ways in 1958. Red Allen was a staunch traditionalist up until he started picking songs like "Proud Mary" later in life with his sons.

These two releases are monumental reissues. CD-1127 includes 23 tracks, five of which are previously unreleased cuts. After moving to Washington, D.C., in 1959, Red formed The Kentuckians with Frank Wakefield. Six cuts capture the creative relationship that they enjoyed before they went their separate ways in 1964. The Kentuckians' "solid bluegrass sound" was then built around good song selection, exceptional instrumental work, and excellent harmony. The previously unreleased cuts include three with Frank Wakefield (Don't Lie to Me, Lonesome Weary Heart, I Don't Believe You'd Do Me Wrong), and two with The Kentuckians (If That's the Way You Feel, Purple Heart). Red Allen and Frank Wakefield's renditions of "Little Birdie" and "Sad and Lonesome Day" are truly classics. Of special merit are those songs that are still standard bluegrass repertoire today like Close By, Out on the Ocean, Hello City Limits, Down Where the River Bends, and The Family Who Prays. Two different versions of "Froggy Went A Courtin'," the old folk tune done bluegrass style are offered.

CD-1128 has 25 tracks and includes two entire albums from the County label recorded in 1965 and 1966.
When originally released, County-704 and County-710 met with mixed reviews. In the first issue of Bluegrass Unlimited, Richard Spottwood wrote that the first album was "grass of the high quality we've come to expect from this group, although a fairly large proportion of the songs are derived from other records by Flatt & Scruggs, Johnnie & Jack, etc. The recording suffers from over-brilliance, but this will not disturb most." Joining Allen were Bill Yates, Wayne Yates, Porter Church and Richard Greene. The Louvin Bros.' song, "Seven Year Blues" is previously unreleased.

Regarding County-710, Spottswood said "Neither Red nor his fellow pickers are inspired here, with the exception of dobroist Wingfield. If the rest of the picking had been up to his level, this album would've been truly exceptional. It's a good set, though, and if you have Red's other albums you'll enjoy this one too." I offer these comments only to show how time and history can alter our perceptions. Nowadays, we often prefer traditional covers performed with crisp, clean brilliance. And besides Red, the players that were being criticized for less-than-inspired playing include David Grisman, Porter Church, and Jerry McCoury. I found these players to be right on the money with these great old songs. One can hardly go wrong with classics like We Live in Two Different Worlds, Are You Waiting Just For Me?, My Baby's Gone, Love Gone Cold, and Whose Shoulder Will You Cry On? The Roy Acuff number "Branded Wherever I Go" is previously unreleased.

In 1967, Allen moved to Nashville to temporarily replace an ill Lester Flatt in Flatt & Scruggs. In the late 1960s, Red Allen worked with J.D. Crowe and Doyle Lawson in the Kentucky Mountain Boys.
With his sons Harley, Greg and Neal, Red performed together as "The Allen Brothers" in the early seventies. Neal died from pneumonia in 1974, while Harley is singer/songwriter in Nashville. In 1976, Red Allen retired from music due in part to health problems (open-heart surgery). In 1984, he formed "The New Kentuckians." In 1992, he recorded an album with David Grisman, Herb Pederson and Jerry Garcia which was nominated for a Grammy Award. On April 3, 1993, Red passed away from lung cancer.

Red Allen's classic work on the Melodeon, Rebel and County labels are part of the very foundation of traditional bluegrass. These reissues should be an integral part of everyone's collection to highlight and document some key milestones in the remarkably talented guitarist and singer's long and successful bluegrass career. 3 out of 5 stars English is an asset and a drawback.......2004-07-20

The best thing about this recording of Carmen is the libretto. Conductor David Parry penned this facile and dramatic English translation. He avoids the pitfalls of literal translation to achieve an idiomatic flow that matches the rhythm of the original lyrics. I use this as a reference libretto for any of the French Carmens.

Unfortunately, the performance suffers from being sung in English. The singers declaim their parts with such proper British diction that Carmen comes across as a school marm. The spoken dialog is delivered beat for deliberate beat and is dripping with reverb. It makes the plaza, tavern and mountain pass all sound like a sewer pipe.

This is a good first Carmen for someone trying to understand the work. The libretto itself is a good investment for further listening. For an enjoyable performance with an emphasis on character and action, I recommend Regina Resnik on the London Double Decker set.

5 out of 5 stars You Will Love Opera After Hearing Carmen In English.......2004-02-09

What a perfect introduction to opera. This newly released recording will surely get you hooked into opera. Carmen, a French opera by Georges Bizet, is the most recognizable and most popular in the opera world. It's famous melodies- the overture, the Habanera, The Toreador Song have all been featured in everything from cellular phone ring tones to Superbowl Commercial (last year's Superbowl with The "Opera In English" label has been making Italian operas into English for a number of years now. Also on the market are Verdi's La Traviata in English (with soprano Valerie Masterson as Violetta) Handel's Julius Caesar with Janet Baker and even Wagner's epic Ring Of The Nibeling sung in English. This is a terrific recording and I highly recommend it if you want to get into opera. Listen to this version first and then try the real, original French version Bizet had written. Patricia Bardon is sensational, sexy and dramatic as Carmen.

The real strength of this version is the dynamic drama. With the advantage of being sung in English, we get better insight on characters' emotions and motives, and we understand the drama a lot better. Carmen is all about great drama. Bizet drew the plot from the French writer Prosper Merimee's dark short story. Carmen is the ultimate femme fatale- a devil-may-care, sexy Gypsy living in Spain, seduces the conservatively raised soldier Don Jose, stealing him away from his fiancee, the passive Micaela, living a life of underground smuggling and rowdy taverns. "Habanera" and "The Gypsy Song and Dance" are very expressive of Carmen's extraordinarily liberal lifestyle. Don Jose, however, has fallen deeply in love- as he shows us in his song/aria "The Flower Song". But Carmen soon becomes tired of his constancy. Don Jose wants a committed, monogamous relationship with Carmen. But Carmen will not submit to love, since she is first and foremost a carnal creature. Eventually, she falls for the handsome Toreador Escamillo. Don Jose, consumed by jealousy, stabs Carmen at a bullfight after Carmen declares her love for Escamillo and rejects Don Jose's love. Don Jose's crazed, obscessive personality shines through in the English version as well. This tragedy has been done in English before so don't think this is the first time. Back in the 50's, there was a film, starring black actors "Carmen Jones" which was treated the same way as this opera- more like an English Broadway musical and with the dubbed singing voice of Marilyn Horne as Carmen. All in all, this recording is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars A wholly credible "Carmen" -- finally!.......2003-09-17

This recording really sells "Carmen" as a drama. Although I have two other recordings of this opera and have seen it performed several times, it never quite worked for me dramatically. But thanks to the fine performances, conducting, and translation here, I've become a "Carmen" convert. Producing a good English-language performance of a foreign opera, especially a warhorse like "Carmen," is much more difficult than it might appear. You need performers who not only can sing the parts (of course) but also can sing *English* and make it halfway intelligible and make it sound like English and make it dramatically convincing to English-speakers. The singers on this recording do an excellent job all around. Don't be put off if you don't recognize their names -- they are up to the task musically and (especially) in their acting. Admittedly, as with *all* English-language recordings, some passages are very hard to understand without reading along, but most of the time the words are clear and effective. I would recommend this recording to any opera beginner or opera lover, even those who normally turn up their noses at performances in translation.

4 out of 5 stars I love Carmen!.......2003-08-15

I do. I can think of no other opera with more melodic inventiveness, and few others with so sure a dramatic pulse. Carmen is popular and it thrills me to say that it is also a very good opera - not always true of popular things.

And what of this recording? Carmen sits well in English, so it is good to hear in translation, although some of the detais in the text jar. Escamillo refers to Jose as "my dear", which sounds rather peculiar, and the guide's line to Micaela: "it's not exactly inviting, is it?" sounds distinctly Middle England rather than Rural Spain. Some of the performers, not least Carmen herself, make the words work, although there are long tracts, especially with the chorus, where the language is distinctly indistinct.

The soloists are, by and large, strong. Patricia Bardon's deep, Handel-friendly voice adapts well to Carmen and she colours the music with phenomenal detail, sounding sexy and provocative from the start with an edge of pride and anger that emerges as the show goes on. She is out of her depth above the stave, though, and some extra top notes in the second act don't show her off to her best advantage. I have previously said that Julian Gavin is poorly served by recordings, though here he sounds much more even and gives a thrilling and musical performance (but his wooden spoken lines let him down). Mary Plazas is a lovely Micaela, rich-voiced and sincere (and word-perfect), but Garry Magee sounds miscast as Escamillo, lacking the ballast at the bottom of the voice to do justice to this tricky role.

The supporting cast is good (Mary Hegarty seems to do nothing but Frasquita these days!) but the really treasurable thing is the conducting. Stepping out of Italian Ottocento, David Parry turns his hand to this French Comedie with an appropriate lightness of touch. His pacing and handling of the set pieces is exemplary and the enrtractes go with a real swing.

A pleasure, then, for the Carmen naive or a novelty for the Carmen-acquainted. I nearly wrote Carmen-weary - but I don't think it's possible.
