4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

4 out of 5 stars Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

Except for one "previously unreleased" recording and two new ones, this is a compilation of segments taken from older Yo-Yo Ma CDs, perhaps to whet listeners' appetite to hear the entire records. The disc represents a triumph of performance over material. The program consists of short pieces and single movements of long ones and serves to display Yo-Yo Ma's extraordinary versatility, his spectacular instrumental and musical gifts, and his remarkable ability to invest everything he plays with the same commitment and emotional concentration. There is no logic to the sequence, except that it begins and ends with solo cello. Bach, whom Ma plays tuned normally when unaccompanied and tuned low with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, may justify the CD's title but seems out of place. Moreover, juxtaposing him with O'Connor and Piazzolla is jarring, though the Tangos are beautiful. The transcription of Dvorák's lovely E-minor Slavonic Dance, despite the participation of violinist Itzhak Perlman and his golden tone, sounds like a movie soundtrack: all bravura and cheap effects. The playing's the thing, and it is stunning, not only Yo-Yo Ma's, but that of all his collaborators, from vocalists Bobby McFerrin and Alison Krauss to pianist Emanuel Ax, Ma's duo partner of 25 years. Ax joins Ma for the Finale of Brahms's second cello sonata; that is what you may find yourself humming at the end. --Edith Eisler

    4 out of 5 stars New Yo-Yo Fan.......2006-07-09

I had never listened to Yo-Yo Ma before (that I knew of) and then I was at a dance recital a few months ago. Two little ballerinas danced to "Simple Gifts" with Alison Kraus, and I had to have that song. I really enjoy playing this album when my family is just hanging out reading or playing with the baby in the living room. Each piece is unique and beautiful in its own way. Simple Gifts is still my favorite piece on the album, I only wish it were longer!

    5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful!.......2006-06-04

I recently got this CD as a birthday gift. I've been wanting this CD for a while. The first track is a wonderful song in all reality the entire CD is a wonderful experience. The prelude by Gershwin is unique sounding with the cello. The jazz quality is still there and has a bit of classical influence intertwined among it. Yo-Yo Ma's recording of Simple Gifts is a good song and when they had the lyrics sung by Alison Krauss it was a wonderful choice. Her vocals matched the cello incredibly well. Track 8 is a wonderful song that I love to hear being played on the cello. For any person who loves classical music or cello music this CD is a good choice to buy. It will be well worth your money.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-08-20

While most people on this site see the "classic" in the title of the album as referring to classical music only, they are mistaken. Classic Yo-Yo refers to his style, not the genre into which his music choices fall. The list of tracks alone should have been a big enough clue that the music isn't all classical. Judging this album, or any album for that matter, on just its title is simply foolish. And while this is technically a solo album, the way Yo-Yo brings in guest artists to perform with him shows his flexibility as an artist. His version of Simple Gifts is so much more than a school chorus; it is an amazing cellist playing the accompaniment on a song that is meant to be sung.

On a more positive note, I found every track beautiful, from the elegant solo cello in the Bach cello suite to the haunting vocal line in the Bobby McFerrin piece. Yo-Yo Ma gathered a wide range of intriguing pieces to make this fantastic album.

2 out of 5 stars What is this?.......2004-02-10

This is a compilation of many different styles; look Yo-Yo can play bluegrass! Not really "Classic" Yo-Yo.

3 out of 5 stars Great if you're not familiar with Yo-Yo Ma.......2002-12-27

This CD is a good sample of what yo-yo ma has acheived in his musical career, if you want a more in depth listening of his talents than I suggest getting the simply baroque CD. The only thing that I didn't like about this cd was that the compositions were to mixed up in the genres. There was a bit of classical, some movie works, a great song by John Williams, and some of The Tango series music. If you would rather listen to one genre, get a CD that just has Classical or Contemerary, don't get a jack of all trades cd.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad But Kind of Generic.......2006-11-16

I've always had a fascination for Grim Reaper. The imagery and album art alone was enough to attract me to their third album. But more on that later.

This is a combination of their first two albums and I'll have to admit, their best two. The songs are okay with a few memorable tracks, but they are definitely cliché ridden and generic. Steve Grimmet's vocals are okay when he doesn't get into those long annoying high pitched wails. I can't say a thing about Nick Bowcott's guitar playing as it rocks. However, I kind of wish he would have done more jamming and solos.

I also have their third album and after listening to it several times, I could not remember a thing about it. At least I can remember a few songs off this CD!

Overall, this is not bad stuff, it just does not blow me away and will probably not blow most of you away either. Beavis and Butthead hated them but I like them well enough that I will not bury this CD and forget about it. It is a double dose of generic clichéd rock, but who cares? You could do a lot worse. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars See You In Hell My Friends.......2006-01-03

Grim Reaper are known for campy horror lyric, a singer who could scream so only Rob Halford's dog could hear, and repetitious lyrics. People complain about those qualities, but thats what makes them so great. This disc contains their first two albums, so its a bargain already. Now if you make those two albums a great blitz of heavy metal, that even better. Even though these song rock, they all have the same standout feature: the excellent guitar work of Nick Bowcott. Bowcott could shred like no one's business. Every song on here rocks. My personal favorites are "Wrath of the Ripper", "Fear No Evil", and the infamous "See You In Hell". I recommend this for any 80s metal fan, and especially fans of Judas Priest. If you like these albums, I suggest you pick up their third and last album, Rock You To Hell.

    3 out of 5 stars A good bargaining..........2005-02-18

Well, for almost the price of one CD you can get the two best Grim Reaper albums (they recorded only three), and since "ROCK YOU TO HELL" is no big deal, you will possess everything tha matters from this band in a single CD. A good deal.

Although Grim Reaper has a muscular and visceral sound, and its guitarrist and founding member Nick Bowcott is a talented axe man, you can not be fooled by all the five stars reviews here. Nostalgy is a strong influence over people's tastes... In these days of fabricated and talentless "artists" like Beyonce, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girl, Britney Spears, anything from the past that has a solid rocking performance tend to be viewed like a mega banda. Grim Reaper was a very competent band, buch too much limited in their own style. That's why they succumbed.

    1 out of 5 stars I'll see you in the cut-out bin!.......2004-01-11

These guys may be a part of that fabled NWOBHM, but don't be fooled! This is fat-man rock all the way, slavishly derivative of Judas Priest but with mega annoying lead vocals thrown in just to make things more bowel-distressing! There should be a law against this type of aural effrontery! Straight into a loaded toilet with this one!

5 out of 5 stars the best of both worlds.......2003-02-07

grim reaper's best two albums all on once cd...how they id it i'll never figure out...theres a reason they didnt combine their 3rd and final album with fear no evil or see you in hell...because it [was bad]]! the title track was all it had going for it...these two however, are classic...see you in hell's production sounds slightly muffled but if can get past that, and you will, you'll hear and appreciate what awaits your metallic eardrums...my favorite tracks are "see you in hell", "fear no evil"," matter of time", "never coming back","liar","wrath of the ripper","final scream","r&r tonight",and the ballad "the show must go on"...you're obviously familiar with grim reaper or you wouldnt be bothering reading this review, so what are you waiting for? this kicks major maximus, so order a copy before they disappear!

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

The lineup of composers is a Who's Who in the world of film music ~ John Addison, Tomaso Albinoni, Kenneth J. After unearthing Stephen Sondheim's youthful effort, Saturday Night, a couple of years ago, producers desperate to bank on the name of one of Broadway's last living titans continue chasing after obscure offerings. The Frogs was a 1974 adaptation of a play by Aristophanes and was staged by the Yale Repertory Theater for a week. This recording, the first complete one, boasts the presence of Nathan Lane, Davis Gaines, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. In Broadway star power, that's like having Jim Carrey, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise in the same movie. Evening Primrose was a 1966 ABC special, which spawned a couple of songs ("I Remember" and "Take Me to the World") that made it into the cabaret and solo recital repertories. Granted, these two pieces are for Sondheim completists, but they do provide an interesting glimpse into the mind of one of the musical theater's most brilliant auteurs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Primrose Shines, Frogs Leaps!.......2005-08-27

This recording is arguably one of Sondheims greatest! The Frogs, which appears here with a brilliant cast (Nathan Lane, Brian Stokes Mitchell among others) is one of Mr. Sondheims oddest pieces of theater. Although it was recently revived on Broadway with a new book by Mr. Lane and that recording is probably better, the entire first half of this recording (which is The Frogs) is brilliant for nostalgias sake and for the amazing expierence of the music itself. Mr. Sondheim has created such music for The Frogs! Very grandiose and stunning!

But it is really the final four tracks on the album (The Evening Primrose) that shines. The Evening Primrose is also an interesting Sondheim show but this one is quite possibly worth the price of the album itself. This recording (the only LEGAL one i know of) of the show is... well... perfect. The music is Sondheim at his best, the singers (Neil Patrick Harris plays the lead) are terrific and it just sounds glorious!

The Frogs might be an interesting and entertaining reason to purchase this album but it will The Evening Primrose that will make you scream with joy!

2 out of 5 stars Can I sell it On Ebay!!!!.......2005-06-01

Contrary to other reviwes posted I will tell you that the Evening Primrose on the Mandy Patinkin Cd "Dress Casual" IS the "Primrose" to own. This one was in my opinion under acted and undersung. While Mandy Patinkin is always over the tip, Ms Peters is one of the best Interpreters of Sondheim's works and the orchestration on this is much darker and deep, like the subject matter of the piece. I found this whole CD lacking, given that just like the "Dress Casual" I bought it only for the "Evening Primrose" selections. Thank the GODS for CD Burners so I can compile my own best of Sondheim CD.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Evening Primrose.......2004-04-15

I find the Evening Primrose here much better than that on "Dress Casual." Firstly, because the two performers--Neil Patrick Harris and Theresa McCarthy--are both amazing singers. Also, because both of these performers are younger and thus, their voices are more "youthful". For this musical, in particular, "youthfulness" is important; Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin are simply to mature to effectively do these parts. I find Neil Patrick Harris, in particular, absolutely superb, and his version of "Not While I'm Around" (on the NYP Sweeney Todd recording) is far and away the best I have ever heard (except for LuPone's dismal British accent). This Evening Primrose alone is worth the price of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing........2004-02-17

    >The Patinkin-Peters version of "Evening Primrose" is in Patinkin's "Dress Casual" CD, the studio recording that became the basis of his Broadway concert. I believe this was the first time all four songs were recorded.

Possibly, but on THIS disc we have the first time all four songs were recorded UNDER SONDHEIM'S SUPERVISION, and that makes all the difference in the world. Mandy Patimkin greatly distorts "If You Can Find Me"'s melody; Bernadette Peters's voice is under the accompaniment on "I Remember", and the arrangements on "Dress Casual" are over-elaborate, gooey, and unrestrained. Neither singer effectively plays his character. No, the "Evening Primrose" you want is right here.

    5 out of 5 stars Addendum.......2004-01-31

If you're looking for the Mandy Patinkin "Dress Casual" CD (as an alternative or supplemental "Evening Primrose" recording), note that Amazon has it listed, for some reason, under "classical music".

4 out of 5 stars Gary Brooker is an amazing talent!.......2006-02-04

Ever since I heard "A Salty Dog" on a "Progressive" FM station back in the early '70's, I've been a fan of Procol Harem. After many years of following them, I discovered his "solo" album (yes, it was an LP), but was reluctant to buy it because I hadn't heard anything from it on the radio. Their loss for not playing it. I'm glad, now, because Gary added a couple of songs that weren't on the original. Although they weren't great, they're still better than the rubbish on the radio now.

4 out of 5 stars Gary Brooker Flies High.......2005-08-25

In 1979, two years after Procol Harum disbanded (until their reunion in 1991), singer/songwriter/pianist Gary Brooker released his first solo album, "No More Fear Of Flying." In short, if you love Procol Harum, then you'll love Gary solo, too. "No More Fear Of Flying" is an excellent album of top-notch, Harum-flavored piano pop/rock, spearheaded by Brooker's powerful voice and masterful playing on the keys. Great songs include the title track, the lovely "Say It Ain't So Joe" (written by Murray Head) and "Angelina," the catchy "Give Me Something To Remember You By" and "Get Up And Dance." There's also two bonus tracks to enjoy: the rare Brooker B-side "S.S. Blues" and the previously-unreleased fun of "Fat Cats." Gary Brooker's "No More Fear Of Flying" is a great disc.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad At All, Commander!.......2004-09-15

Maybe this is rambling, but it's unavoidable: this album came out about the same time as ex-Rolling Stone Mick Taylor's first album. Both albums, showcasing the talents of two irreplaceable members of two of the finest Rock and Roll Bands of all time. So which one is better: You're reading about it. Instead of one great song and the rest, long meaningless jams like with which MT padded his album, Brooker's "Flying" is, for the most part, all uptempo, cheerful songs, and the musicians he has backing him are incredible, too - especially guitarist Tim Renwick, and read my review of The Sutherland Bros & Quiver's "Reach For The Sky" for HIS appraisal. My favorite songs on the album are the title track (which had lyrics supplied by Procol Harum's lyricist Keith Reid), and, as all of Keith Reid's lyrics, they're open to interpretation. I, myself, read in it a recounting of how Procol Harum, realizing the deluge of disco and punk (that, ultimately, would KILL Rock and Roll when they interbred, creating the terrifying progeny "new wave"), decided they would call it a day, and "they would live to rise again." Which, thank The Lord, they DID in 1991, and onward. There's "Say It Ain't So" which was almost released as a single, until "Jesus Christ Superstar's" Murray Head released his version. My favorite tracks are the very best breakup song I've ever heard, "Give Me Something To Remember You By" and the balls-out rocker "Switchboard Susan." You might remember THAT from Nick Lowe's version which was released - yup, summer, 1979. It's almost blasphemous to say this, given Nick Lowe's stature as one of the last, TRUE Rock and Rollers, BUT: Gary Brooker's version is simply...better. Great guitar, almost Little Richard theatrics on the piano, and Brooker's lecherous (!) vocal. It's a great track. Gary Brooker would go on to release three more solo albums, the third being the most "Procolic," but for pure enjoyment - and, yes, "Flying" is one of those all-too-rare cd's that I can play and not have to lunge to skip every other song - Gary Brooker's "No More Fear Of Flying" was a very FINE end to the Seventies, an album (now cd) that left hope for the future. And you cannot honestly say THAT about "The Long Run" or "The Wall," now can ya?

    4 out of 5 stars Procol fans don't despair.......2001-01-09

Procol Harum fans (and I assume you are such or why the heck are you looking for Gary Brooker records ?! )Like a lot of you back in the early seventies I too judged a solo album by an ex-member of the Procol family by the same high standards we applied to that beloved entity. Thus: Robin Trower's guitar histrionics ala Hendrix were admirable, and Matthew Fisher's pop oriented albums were nice, but nothing solo-wise was gonna fill the bill , because Procol Harum were the sum of their parts. Well that's the way I felt, too, until I picked this LP up in 1978. Staying faithful to a band you loved is one thing, it's easy to forgive a member for a misguided attempt at self expression, but when a member of said band puts out an album as sastisfying as this one is..well,as we say in Oklahoma, "them grits got gravy!". Harum fans rejoice! Gary is singing with that magnificent voice, he's got the piano working like it should, and ol' Keith Reid's along for a couple of songs. It ain't exactly Harum , but then it ain't exactly not. George Martin produced this so it's a tad too polite, if you know what I mean, and a little B.J. Wilson seasoning would have added some much needed chaos. Those caveats aside ;I give it a very high rating because Procol Harum fans won't be disappointed ,and if by some strange incident of computer mishap the Gary Brooker neophyte wandered through the garden fence by accident you just got lucky because one of the finest white soul voices out there is available for yer listening pleasure.Dave's Fave; the completely un -Procol like "Angelina ".It's so cool, Herb Alpert cut an instrumental version on it!

Fear No Evil is where the band really hit its stride and nailed an identity. See You in Hell was hit and miss and Rock You to Hell, while it was great in some ways, was a let down (singing about politics?) FNE was have a good time heavy metal!

5 out of 5 stars An underrated metal maelstrom.......2005-07-16

If this album would have gotten as much radio sponsorship as Ozzy or Metalli-can't they would have been superstars, I think. No real weak tracks, a definitive 80's metal album at it's best. Every song has something unique, either a real eye-opening solo or riff or both or something else to do with drums. Funny metal lyrics too, like what you'd expect from Judas Priest. Color/texture changes from song to song and within a song itself. You're caught off guard just when you anticipate what's going to happen next. This one's perfect for the loudspeakers.

5 out of 5 stars grim reaper at their best.......2003-02-07

I have heard all three of their releases and I must say that this is their best one..."Fear No Evil"...If their first album "See You In Hell" had a clearer more crisp sound and production, then I would say it, but Grim Reaper comes through on "Fear No Evil" with better production and clarity...the title track is the opener and it sets the tone for the onslaught of metal that awaits your unsuspecting ears...the second track "never coming back" is great...one of the better ones they ever recorded imho...the third song lord of darkness is good but i could do without it...did nothing for me...the fourth song "matter of time" the same...fifth "r@r tonight" catches you offguard at first listen due to its change of pace...another winner! sixth, seventh, and eighth songs are good too but again dont do anything for me as far as anything memorable...but the last song "final scream" is classic...overall the vocalist can kinda get on your nerves ie: similar to the way ozzy's does...so,take and listen in moderation...and forget any videos youve ever seen of them...you'll appreciate the music much more if you do so...some bands were just not destined for the mtv screen...way too ugly for television!
