Sofia Coppola has, with two elegant movies, proved herself a talented director with a keen eye for interior life. She's also got great ears. For Lost in Translation, the story of a May-December friendship in Tokyo between two displaced Americans, the score is a tonic for jetlag. Coppola prescribes a dose of shoegazer pop, from My Bloody Valentine's chiming "Sometimes" to Jesus & Mary Chain's fuzzed-out "Just Like Honey." The music nails the hazy conscious state of actors Bill Murray (as a movie star with a midlife crisis) and Scarlet Johansson (as an emotionally marooned twenty-something). It also provides a safe, warm envelope in which they can enact their overseas adventures. Working with producer Brian Reitzell, whose band Air scored her previous Virgin Suicides, Coppola lured Valentine's Kevin Shields into providing several slices of dreamy indie-rock and sonic wallpaper, as stylish as it is formless. There's a welcome bit of Japanese goofiness, a funhouse-mirror reflection of U.S. folk-rock courtesy of early-1970s band Happy End. And a "hidden" track provides the audio of Murray, in the film, doing his sleepy karaoke version of Roxy Music's "More Than This." --Marc Weidenbaum

3 out of 5 stars Fairly mellow..........2007-06-07

For some reason, I bought this soundtrack thinking that it contained Bill Murray's singing from the karaoke bar scene. I actually like his version better than original singers'. Lack of paying attention on my part. I thought one soundtrack kinds melt into the next....meaning, they all sounded the same after a while. But still decent to listen to if you want to relax and mellow out.

5 out of 5 stars Lush and atmospheric.......2007-03-19

"Lost in Translation" is one of my personal favorite soundtracks from the past five years. The soundtrack consists of an array of modern electronica artists from Air to Squarepusher, with a smidgeon of indie rock by Kevin Shields (of My Bloody Valentine fame) and The Jesus and Mary Chain. The moodiness of songs like Sebastien Tellier's "Fantino" and Air's "Lost in Kyoto" provides the lush, atmospheric soundtrack to the scenes involving Bill Murray and Scarlett Johanssen. Some people might find this soundtrack bloody boring but I loved it because the music actually made the film what it was. I only wish that Sophia included the song by Peaches from the stripclub scene on the soundtrack but overall the soundtrack is a classic to me. I don't think the film would have been as good with any other music.

1 out of 5 stars highbrow elevator music.......2006-08-18

Completely devoid of melody and intricacy, the Lost In Translation soundtrack sounds like someone allowed their inebriated 93-year-old uncle to wander unsupervised into an electric organ store, where he slowly falls asleep face down on a keyboard, drooling pea soup into the circuitry. This is glorified New Age music for underpowered karaoke machines, and it would put even Yanni to sleep.

5 out of 5 stars music to get lost by..........2006-07-08

If you have seen this movie and looking up this soundtrack, chances are you have been affected by it as much as I and many others have. The movie itself is best viewed late at night, in a dimly lit (not dark) room, especially after a difficult day at work. This soundtrack is best listened to in a car, again at night, while flying aimlessly down a dark highway, lit only by the occassional headlamps of passing cars, or the streetlights of a nighttime cityscape. You WILL feel as if you are half asleep in a taxi with Bob and Charlotte after a long nite out in Tokyo. Absolutely fantastic and flawless collection of sonic atmosphere. Dig in...

4 out of 5 stars Music for Strangers in a Strange Land.......2006-07-07

I can't say enough good things about the film, "Lost in Translation". It's a nearly perfect comedy-drama that conveys the feelings of loneliness, homesickness and isolation, yet also has so much to say about close relationships that can form circumstantially. It's a great offbeat love story that doesn't go for the cheap resolution, but develops the platonic friendship of the main characters beautifully. And it has one of the greatest screen kisses in recent memory. (After all, what middle-aged man like me doesn't fantasize a relationship, even a platonic one, with Scarlett Johansson?) The soundtrack is spot-on, conveying the urban Weltschmerz that pervades this moody, and by turns funny and touching, movie. Kevin Shields, late of My Bloody Valentine, does a particularly good job capturing the mood with several songs, led by "City Girl". There are a number of other fine tracks throughout this CD, performed by such alternative pop-rock acts as My Bloody Valentine, Death in Vegas, The Jesus and Mary Chain, the 70's Japanese group Happy End, and the techno band Air. They set the tone with fuzzy, slightly distorted, and ambient tunes. And if you're patient enough to wait through about 10 minutes of "dead air", you can hear a "hidden track": Bill Murray's late-night-weary karaoke version of Roxy Music's "More than This" from one of the many memorable scenes of the film.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

"Pah-rum-a-pum-pum!" Yes, that was Low that provided the soundtrack for a Christmas Gap commercial. With a slowed-down version of "The Little Drummer Boy," the stark-sounding Minnesota trio subtly marched into the aural lexicon of pop culture. Low's fifth full-length release, Things We Lost in the Fire, is an appropriate follow-up to their auspicious television debut. The Minnesota trio's stark sound has evolved--ever so slightly--since their 1994 debut, I Could Live in Hope. Tracking their career is like surveying the changes in a river's course--progress is perceptible, but just barely. Still, while modesty and restraint are key fundamentals for Low, Fire is full of grace and revelations. While earlier efforts lacked in contrast, "Dinosaur Act" and "Like a Forest" build and swell like thunderstorms coming over the horizon. Drummer Mimi Parker's vocals on "Embrace" are particularly evocative of the trio's evolution; achingly vulnerable, she lulls the listener with a promise of sanctuary before "crushing your skull with my warming embrace." What a glorious way to go. --Andria Lisle

Album Description

Fifth full length from Duluth trio recorded with Steve Albini. Guests include Marc D'Gli Antoni of Soul Coughing, Daniel Huffman and Ida Pearle of Shellac. Standard jewel case. 2001 release.

5 out of 5 stars Slow is the new fast.......2007-01-11

This is a breath taking album. I literally have to make sure that I keep breathing...Not really.
When I first heard Low it didnt click with me all too well. I wanted it to be faster, but I was foolish. After hearing In Metal, which is more of a bitter sweet ballad, it kind of kicked me into the mode of their music. If you do not like Low, give them a chance. It took me a better part of a year but it will come to you.

Question. If someone called Low shoegazers whould they be wrong?

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful album filled with gorgeous, subtle music.......2006-08-12

I've become a fan of Low rather late in their career. About a year and a half ago I heard THE GREAT DESTROYER and was blown away by it, picking it up instantly. Recently I decided I wanted to hear more and after some investigation decided to pick this one up. I have to say that it really is better than the other album I had previously fallen in love with. The pace on this album is ever slower, among the slowest in all of rock, right down there with Galaxie 500 or American Music Club. It is compelling stuff and grows on you the more you listen to it.

The songs are just exquisite and despite their slow tempo are often filled with irresistible hooks. I find the duet, for instance, in the intro of "Closer" to be almost painfully beautiful, while "Dinosaur Act" is so lovely it almost qualifies as pop. "Sunflower" kicks the album off and is one of the best cuts on the disc. "Whore" is a bit more subtle than these, but equally gorgeous, and "Like a Forest" is another highlight. I think my favorite cut, however, is probably "Dinosaur Act." Great lyrics and great passion.

I can understand someone not liking this. If you only like happy music, or music that employs only fast tempos, this could drive you insane. But while I'm not patient in everything, I'm patient in my music, and I am utterly in love with the slow-tempoed beauties on this.

4 out of 5 stars Nice introduction to the world of "slo-core".......2006-02-09

I just started listening to Low, and wish I had heard of them sooner. Some people call the music depressing or cold, while others find it pensive or minimalist. I think they reach a nice balance, where this is something you can listen to, strike a mood, and just kick back. If your looking for something more gloomy, check out titles that are closer to Goth (see Lycia), where upbeat stuff would be something like Red House Painters. Anyways, really great stuff here. Check it out, you might like it. :)

5 out of 5 stars sure to be a classic.......2004-03-15

i've never really been a low fan; they always seemed too... boring.

but this album is veering dangerously on perfect. steve albini's productions is potentially the best i've ever heard him do (which is saying quite a bit) and the songs are tremendous examples of the tremendous power of minimalism.

4 out of 5 stars a spooked hubley and kaplan.......2003-04-26

I don't know, maybe it's narrow to say that `Things We Lost In The Fire` is the murky, the arcane, backwoodsian cousin to Yo La Tengo when the latter skip noise for sweet, harmonious acoustica. Maybe, but it's a pretty good frame to reference. "When they found your body/giant Xs on your eyes/with your half of the ransom/I bought some sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet sunflowers/and gave them to the night" responds the opening lyric, Parker and Sparhawks harmonising like a haunted Hubley and Kaplan. Maybe it's more upbeat than previous works but really even then it rarely rises above a hush, and `Dinosaur Act`, the most rockin' thing here, still manages to slope and saunter. The lyrics and the sometimes murky Albini mix might sound spooked and oblique but they're infused with subtle romanticism and moments of sublime beauty, "things we lost in the fire/how did we ever get by/words we'll never take back/hold me closer than that".

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Spiritual History of Celtic Ireland.......2007-06-24

This is one of those CD's that keeps you guessing about its meaning. Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance, 2 solo CD's, & several movie theme CD's joins forces with Patrick Cassidy to create an antithetical sound scape of what in my interpretation maybe about the history of Celtic Spirituality on the island of Ireland.

The 1st song "The Song of Amergin" is about Amergin, a Celtic leader who according to legend is the 1st to set foot on Ireland to battle the "god's" for possession of the land.

The 2nd song "Maranatha" (Come Lord) maybe about Saint Patrick bringing Christianity to the Ireland or maybe the cry of the land to free itself from the ancient pagan gods.

The 3rd song "Amergin's Invocation" makes the final cleansing of the land which the 4th song "Elegy" mourns the death of the pagan gods.

The 5th song "Sailing to Byzantium" is the 1st form of Christianity to come to the Celtics. Historically the Celtic Christian church was semi-independent from Rome & took on a more Eastern Byzantine to almost Coptic Christian Mysticism that expressed the love of God & nature.

The 6th song is the most interesting on the CD; "Abwoon" is Aramaic for "Our Father" that Lisa Gerrard sings with a deep alto using the Aramaic language that Jesus used for his "How to Pray" prayer when he was on the Earth.

The 7th song "Immortal Memory" maybe about the universality of ancient Christianity or how God remembers all things? Or maybe this being the theme song is an overview of the rest of the songs?

The 8th song "Paradise Lost" maybe about the overtaking of the Celtic Church to conform to Roman Catholic doctrine & practice by Bishop Augustine 600 A.D. (not Saint Augustine of Hippo 400 A.D.) or about how modern Ireland has forgotten its true spiritual roots.

The 9th song "I Asked For Love" is plainly about getting the opposite from prayer until one just asks for God where he or she may receive freely.

The 10th song "Psallit In Aure Dei" is Patrick Cassidy main score from the words of Thomas of Celano, who was a disciple of & wrote a biography about Saint Francis of Assisi.

Try to come up with your own interpretation of this intriguing CD.

Well produced to bring out Lisa Gerrard's most unique singing style, but not as original as her 2 solo CD's "The Mirror Pool" & "Duality". Reading a few reviews below I agree that at times the music from this CD sounds like "Gorecki's 3rd Symphony" or something like Arvo Part to John Travener but it is done in good taste. Therefore a "4" is given for lack of originality.

5 out of 5 stars Dark.......2007-03-17

Paradise Lost is darker than Hell itself; my stomach churns and writhes in knots every time I hear it. I love it.

Amazing album, haunting, and worth every penny for Paradise Lost alone. There are a few tracks that aren't very memorable, but all in all this is a five-star album.

2 out of 5 stars Immortal Memory...Forgettable Melodies.......2006-05-10

Although these compositions are characterised by pleasing tonalities recorded in richly reverberant ambiance, they are altogether lacking with regard to melodic development or musical substance. There is nothing memorable about "Immortal Memory." Emotionally flat, this disc is positively dreary. This CD contains 57 minutes of excessively introspective, monotonous music that inspires nearly as much emotion as contemplating drying cement. An antidepressant medication may be necessary after listening. A disappointing addition to my musical library.

3 out of 5 stars haunting yet empty.......2005-10-19

It is hard not to reference or compare Lisa Gerard's solo efforts to Dead Can Dance catalogue. I guess I was expecting something that would continue DCD tradition. The first thing that struck me was that the dead could really dance to the DCD music but they appear to be haunted and sorry ghosts in "Immortal Memory". The music is truly mournful. There is nothing wrong with mournful and haunting program for a dics, but I found those emotions falling little flat in Lisa Gerard's production. Her music sounds very ambitious but never achieves the drama and "goose bumps" effect of Gorecki's III Symphony (Symphony of Sorrow Songs) or Avro Part's "Fratres". Maybe this comparison is not fair, after all the latter two are classical music's contemporary masters, but I get an impression that Lisa Gerard's aim was equally serious. Maybe she set her goals too high.

4 out of 5 stars Ethereal beauty.......2005-07-29

This album is perfect for drifting off to sleep, or for a relaxing meditation session. The music is very much like a soundtrack (similar in feel to Gerrard's "Whale Rider" soundtrack work). The music is orchestral and ethereal with Gerrard's haunting vocals. She has one of the most distinctive voices in modern music and her voice is in top form here.

So why 4 stars as opposed to 5? It is almost too mellow. I really prefer the greater diversity of sounds on her previous solo efforts. This album is great in certain scenarios and a wonderful album to relax too, but somehow it leaves me wanting just a little more. All in all, though it really is lovely and the perfect way to wind down and relax in swirls of beauty in today's crazy fast-paced world.

3 out of 5 stars Oh dear...they've taken their eye off the ball.......2007-01-08

This is not much like their first album (which was a mostly clever, sometimes ham-handed combination of operatic arias and modern electronic instrumentation).

But Shine is pretty much the same ethno-electronica that was pervasive throughout the 90s. Think Deep Forest, Anubian Nights, Enigma, B-Tribe, and even Sting's "Desert Rose". Yawnnnnnnnnnnnn.

Their first album was good mostly because of its orginality (operatic arias are definitely a challenge), but any old fool can slap a "cool" Middle Eastern chant over a modern beat.

What bugs me about both albums is that they don't maintain that singularly operatic quality--it seems to be a sonic delicacy reserved only for a few tracks.

So, with a very few exceptions, this album is a bit contrived.

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful music.......2004-11-29

I would describe this music as a mellow and unusal mix of music where Enya meets Maria Callas, and I am a fan of both, so that's a good thing. It is so good that Billboard Music called it the best classical crossover of the year!

I would call this music techno opera scene from the future with beautiful opera singing, just to give you an idea of what this music is like! Also, the singer from the Fifth Element soundtrack, Inva Mula sings the song "Mon Amour".
Also singing on this cd is a singer named Shakila. She sings on "Kokab" and "Khodoya". These three are my favorite tracks. Though the cd in whole is a joy to listen to.

We'll say that "Operatica-Shine" succesfully bridged the Middle East to Europe via southern Spain.

So if you're a nu music dj, pick up this cd, so you can really spin an eclectc mix of music - Savannah Skye aka DJ Dakini-NYC...

4 out of 5 stars Better then R&B.......2004-04-16

My wife and I are always looking for new music to cuddle up to, while either watching the sunset, or getting a little heated. I think this album is a great replacement for Barry White, or some other R&B that people often equate with mood music.

These sounds will actually get your heart pounding and blood pumping without forcing you to constantly skip over songs that just get too rowdy.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, yet not comparable to Diva Dance.......2004-03-12

Let me start out by saying that i love this cd. i bought it thinking that it would be like the song Diva Dance from the Fifth Element. It is most certainly one of my favorite cd's but it is nothing like the Diva Dance song. All of the tracks are much slower, focusing more on the opera part, as opposed to the techno/pop. i would still give this cd a splendid 4 out of 5 stars, but i would just like to get across the point that it doesn't have the type of songs that are advertised. thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Opera Today.......2003-08-24

I just bought Operatica:Shine. It is my favorite CD, I strongly recomend it to enyone who enjoys opera! If you like "THE DIVA DANCE" in The Fifth Element you will love this CD!

Customer Reviews:

      1 out of 5 stars Hated it........2003-08-21

Many songs sound as if they were recorded using a pan flute or cheap harp. I would stay away from this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to some brilliantly original electronica.......2005-09-15

Laika is a unique blend of ambient, electronica, and trip hop. "Tasteful restraint" sums up their approach to the genre. Guy Fixsen's choice of sonic elements and his arrangements make these tracks more timeless than most of their trip hop contemporaries. Portisheads' "Dummy" is still a work of genius, but many of its production elements already make the CD sound sadly dated. Laika's songs don't share that problem.

The underlying tracks are a mix of synth based soundscapes, atmospheric samples, live instrumentation, ambient percussion and border-line d-n-b drums (Laika crossed that border on the more recent "Wherever I Am I Am What Is Missing").

Margaret Fiedler's vocals float like a wistful mist over the top of these tracks one moment and cut through them with a gentle urgency the next. Her voice has just that right mix of female-chill-out smoothness and original personality to work within this context. Purely ambient music is intended to create atmosphere, allowing the listener give the music itself as much or as little attention as they choose. Most vocal music makes poor ambient, since vocals and the narrative nature of lyrics tend to demand attention. But even Laika's lyrics have an ambient quality. The listener can tune them out altogether and let the vocal be just another element in the soundscape, or focus on them at any point be rewarded with intriguing, poignant images that add to the atmosphere.

The melodies are sparse. Laika approaches vocals as an equal partner in the total piece. Rather than instruments and arrangement merely framing and supporting the melody, they share equal responsibility for the listening experience, and the sparseness of the melodies maintains balance.

Disc 1 hardly sounds like a compilation. Even though the tracks were recorded over a nine year period, the CD is as coherent as the best concept album. Hard to believe some of these tracks are more than 10 years old. It's best to think of disc 2 as a bonus CD, as it is a little more uneven from track to track. But as a bonus CD, it is quite a plus to the package.

A nice listening experience that can fit quite a range of moods.

5 out of 5 stars electronic pop bliss.......2003-03-16

In a perfect world, Laika would be the most popular band in the world. Would you expect anything less from a genius like Guy Fixsen? For those of you who haven't heard this band- they have a very exotic sound. Vocalist Margaret Fiedler's velvety almost spoken word-like voice is the perfect compliment to Fixsen's rhythmic exotic syncopations. These songs would work great as instrumentals for the most part, but Fiedler takes them to another level not only vocally, but with her clever and unique lyrics. Laika have currently released 3 studio records all of which are superb. This record is a nice addition because the remixes of familiar songs don't sound so familiar after all and there are some unreleased tracks. For all their knob twiddling and programming expertise, Laika is definitely a band of superior musicians as well as -witnessed by their live performance. What else can I say - Laika are truly a band to be treasured.
