5 out of 5 stars Raw and Live: Sanborn -- the Original -- at His Best.......2006-08-24

Recorded by the "dean" of contemporary sax even before the term "smooth jazz" was in existence, this is the only "live" recording in David Sanborn's extensive solo catalog, "live" being that it was recorded before a studio audience in NYC in 1984 (and probably not without some "overdubs" with Sanborn being the studio perfectionist that he is). Sanborn was playing with the hottest NY studio musicians (being one of them himself at the time), Hiram Bullock and Marcus Miller, friendships forged on the NYC recording scene and no doubt while playing together in the Saturday Night Live Band and sit-ins with the Late Night With David Letterman bands. Marcus Miller was just a couple of years into the scene, with his signature tone and funky slap-bass solos on "Hideaway" and "Run For Cover" turning heads. The album features rearrangements of both of those tunes, earlier recorded on Sanborn's studio albums. A soulful rendition of Paul Simon's "Smile", originally recorded on Sanborn's sophomore effort back in 1977, climaxes into a frenzied trading of fours between Bullock and Sanborn. If you can find it, a black and white film of some alternate takes of this recording, titled, "Love and Happiness", is a real treat and shows the interaction between these top shelf musicians. I've recently bought this as a gift after having listened to hit endlessly in the late 80's. Listening to top selling smooth jazz saxophonists such as Kenny G., Dave Koz, Mindy Abair, and Candy Dulfer, this album is evidence of where they all get it from.

4 out of 5 stars Straight to the Hunk.......2005-08-23

Back in his most hunkiest of days, legendary jazz saxophonist David Sanborn produced a live album, "Straight to the Heart," which came right before he entered super stardom and when smooth jazz was ALL the rage.
This is part of his collaboration with Marcus Miller and the duo produced the best music, from "Hideaway" to the title track.

5 out of 5 stars My first jazz experience.......2005-04-25

When I started listening to jazz..the song 'Hideaway" on this CD was the first song I ever listened to. It was back in 1996, and I was 11 years old. I mean...come on...David on sax and M2 on bass? Can't beat that. You have other songs like "Smile", where Hiram Bullock does an amazing guitar solo toward the end of the song. My other favorites are "Run For Cover", "Straight to the Heart", both written by Marcus Miller, and David's beautiful cover of the classic "Lotus Blossom". And this CD's version of 'Lisa' is my favorite. You have to buy this CD...no questions asked. Just do it. You'll be happy you did.

5 out of 5 stars SIZZLIN' WITH TASTE!!!.......2005-02-02

This is one of my favorite David Sanborn albums from the man himself. He always put out stuff that's real. He has his mentor and bass player Marcus Miller doin the beat. This CD is funkdified with a lotta soul, lotta funk, lotta jazz, lotta everything. I own this on cassette but sooner or later I'll buy it on CD. Good job on a perfect, Mr. Sanborn, U're da man. Wish u do more in the future 'cuz I'll luv to hear from ya. I officially play the trumpet and 'specially can sing well.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Nora.......2004-12-24

Now if you ask me, and a substantial number of torch song virtuosos do on a frighteningly frequent basis, this here album is far superior to the work that Nora Jones has popularized in recent years. See, this here Julie Wolf has a voice that is considerably warmer and more velvety than that of Nora. Don't go thinking that I am casting disparaging thoughts at Miss Jones because I ain't - I like her work to an extent, but then again I get pretty worn out listening to her CDs because she sings beautifully while at the same time she sounds like she is singing somebody else's songs. That ain't the case for Julie Wolf.

Julie Wolf sings all the songs on this here album like they was her own. She makes them personal like, and that lends itself to the quality of the product. She also happens to be a gifted musician and can play a number of instruments quite beautifully and while I don't want to ramble on in a comparison of the two women, I don't know that Nora Jones can do that. In fact, I lost interest in Nora Jones before her first CD reached its critical climax. This here Julie Wolf CD sneaked in under the critical radar and managed to garner only a smidgen of recognition. This, my internet savvy friends, was a travesty. This is the album everybody should have been talking about when they were discovering or rediscovering more mature music... not that Nora Jones thing. Sorry, I'm attempting to get away from the comparison but I find it hard.

I will have to admit that I purchased this CD when I saw Julie Wolf perform behind Bruce Cockburn a while back and took it home and played it once while I was out in the shed working. I was preoccupied with getting the reversible flange on my brush hog replaced and didn't pay so much attention to the music. So I didn't play it again until last week and since I put it in to the CD player I have now played it about eleventy hundred times. This thang is wonderful, ya'll. We done had us a fire last night and had this here CD on and the whole Huckabee clan was mesmerized. Even Junior, who usually takes to other types of music.

Me and Mama put the youngin's to bed and played the CD again and sat there on the fold-a-bed in the front room and made cow eyes at each other and boy-howdy is this a good CD for doing that. I guess my final critique is - if you plan on makin' cow eyes and need some music that isn't just background music, but rather music to give you something to think about while you get all romantic, then this here CD is the one you need.

5 out of 5 stars What I've been missing!.......2004-04-24

Virtually stumbled accross this artist when looking up a favorite of mine (Catie Curtis). Any friend of Caties's is a friend of mine. LOVED the CD. The perfect CD when you are not sure what mood you are in. Prefect for ALL occassions. Crisp, clean, beautiful music to enjoy - always. This CD had moved into my favorite position. A CD you will never get tired of!

5 out of 5 stars Elegance.......2002-08-05

Where shall I? Can I begin, in describing the incredible Julie Wolf? Everything I can think of is a 'Given'. Julie is a tremendous pianist. 'Given'. Ms. Wolf is an amazing singer. 'Given'. Julie is an talented songwriter. 'Given'. Julie Wolf knows her way around arrangements, interpretation and accompaniment. 'Given'.
Her solo cd "Walk the Worn Out Floor" is to beautiful for words, as is the woman. As her hands slowly, very slowly start to play the first track, "My Foolish Heart", you can hear Julie's lips part right before she begins to sing. It's one of those magical moments in music when you and the artist become one, the feeling that you are listening from a breath away. The moment is absolute heaven.

"If I Loved You" a song first penned by the duo of Rodgers and Hammerstein becomes Julie's. I'm taken aback time and time again by the maturity in her phrasing, not only on this song, but on so many of the songs in this collection. A gorgeous melancholy and quiet introspection live and breathe on this track. She posseses the ability of being able to deliberately hang on a phrase, a note, and then, allow it fall a bit behind the song's natural rhythm.

Listening to "Love is Like a Cigarette" I'm always taken aback by the softness, the gentle air that resonates in the woman's voice. "Trust in Me" a song by Denny Goodhew, is sung to perfection. The interplay between the words, her piano and her voice, astounds me. She touches me with the 'feeling' of all three as they merge into one, imparting an opening of the soul.

She does an interpretation of Keith Jarrett's "My Song". This song is just to beautiful, it kills me, leaves me in a gorgeous restful place-everytime. The lyrics written by Rhiannon, a friend of Julie's, overlap and seemingly decode the sax melody played on the original version. "A Mountain Atop a Mountain" is breathtaking. Close your eyes and you're floating totally free as the airiest of cellos plays the melody, it's quietly taken over by Hans Teuber's flute, flying just abit higher and then the sweetness of Julie's voice, holds you as the same melody is finished as it should be, with her angelic tones in duet with the flute. Listening to her arrangement of "Baby Plays Around", you hear an ominous series of basslines being played behind the lyrics, by John Silverman. It darkens the music and for myself, matches the many moods being sung by Ms. Wolf. Julie weaves many emotions as she sings the lyrics. She moves from a sad timbre, a voice of anger, of worry, for what is to become of both of them. She touches on a complicated matter of factness. A place where a person finds acceptance of the truth in someone they love beyond measure, beyond longing, beyond reason yet deep remorse in finally having let go. A proud love but one that may make you ashamed to have fallen so deeply for them.

"Don't Go to Strangers" not only showcases Julie Wolf's voice but also her extremely tasteful soloing. I really don't know what jazz pianists she's studied, but I hear bits of everyone from Jarrett, a bit of Corea, a touch of Zawinul, colors of Lyle Mays' solo work, a sprinkle of Donald Fagen. This song moves from some infectious, bright and upbeat chords to start, and some very tastefully executed soloing. It all slowly finds it's way back, reacquainting you with Julie's magnificent voice to open the song's first verse. As she delivers her lines she also slows and darkens the mood, ever so gently. The tones become very soft and dreamlike, and her vocal walks inside and around the chords. Glorious. The solo starts very slowly, with a thoughtfulness, a meditative brilliance that grows into a very steady moving river of notes delivered with such purposeful deliberateness. As her solo builds, the somber mood that had been painted, sharpens and like a flower, it starts to blossom. It opens, not only a very quiet breath but also a walking bassline that starts to move the solo into a new color, a new brilliance, a new rhythm. The chord clusters chime and ring out but quickly remember their earlier musical embrace, and begin to close around themselves and break into single, soulful notes once again. Julie has once again shifted the mood and rhytmn , her fingers start to lead us back to some very heartfelt closing verses.

Ah, what an artist. She moves quite easily from the melodies of Annie Lennox to Rodgers & Hammerstein to a self penned song called "The Wall". This song, "The Wall", is a promising look into what the woman could offer us if we could only get another Julie Wolf solo cd. Julie left me wanting to know more about the character she's singing about...and that's exactly the intent. We all put up walls in our lives, for protection of our hearts, for the sake of diverting someone who's getting alittle to close, or just a wall to put up the memories. On "Daisy Petals on My Head", a cd by her sister Kate, you can hear one song co-written by Julie, yet I would love to hear more of Julie's solo music.

There really isn't to much on Julie Wolf out in 'webland', I've looked. It's a shame that an artist of her ability, her promise, her grace is for our purposes, living a musical life of such anonymity. The talent of this woman is immense. I'm so proud to know of her talent. I'm so very happy that I've come to know her music. Her touch on the piano is as delicate as her voice, yet her ability for interpretation is so far beyond what has become celebrated in today's 'so called music'. To have Julie Wolf acknowledged by today's standards of artistry would be a giant step downward to mediocrity.

I'm very proud to have met Ms. Wolf in person. She left me feeling a wonderment, a melancholy that only a person of that kind of elegance could bring.

5 out of 5 stars A fresh, beautiful voice with a clear and important message!.......2003-12-15

Born in 1975 in Napa, grown up in Antioch, California, Jilleen chooses Ephesians 5:19b as a guiding verse for her music ministry: "Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."

With inspiring enthusiasm, electrifying rhythms that recall Sandi Patty's finest moments, and a radiant, clear voice she speaks in her songs about God's strength and majesty that pass our understanding, about Jesus' sacrifice at Calvary, about the encouragement and hope we can find in life's often difficult and ugly circumstances, and last, but not least she tells us that we are all God's creation and can be His children, loved ones, called to take His love into this world.

The professional singer with a Bachelor's degree in music who performed with well-known artists such as Bryan Duncan, Al Denson and Patty Cabrera was among the Top 25 Finalists in the 2001 Do Good Music Competition. She is a very talented performer of narrative, inspirational ballads such as One King, Two Crowns and Artist Of My Soul, and beautiful yet simple songs such as Fernando Ortega's Give me Jesus, a song she performed on her first album One King, Two Crowns (2000) with a beautiful, clear voice and a moving cello interlude. The arrangements of her ballads are smooth, dominated by piano or guitar, and powerfully orchestrated in her up-tempo songs. The meaningful lyrics and her voice stand in the center.

Apart from the United States she has a heart for people in Japan. As a spokeswoman for Asian Access / Life Ministries she longs to bring the gospel to the Asians. And it's for them in particular that she sings a beautiful, somehow Asiatic version of Iesuo Kudasai (Give me Jesus) and He Is Exalted (translated Syuo Homeyo Takarakani).

Jilleen-a fresh, beautiful voice with a clear and important message! Look for her latest CD, Summon Your Power (released in Sept. 2003, Jilleen's Records, Mission Viejo, California), with beautiful ballads such as Alabaster Box (Janice Lyn Sjostrand) and How Could I Ask For More (Cindy Morgan), and more energetic, sharper rhythms in songs like In Not Of or Summon Your Power! It's worth listening to!

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publicatons.......2004-08-02

"As Years Go By" is an intensely moving exploration of the depths of the soul. Deeply emotional and introspective, one senses the healing process of fully expressing oneself is taking place as we listen, healing our own wounds as we go. It has been ten years since Brenda Warren's previous solo piano recording, which was acclaimed worldwide. She has been writing songs with lyrics in the meantime, but felt it was time to come back to her roots in solo piano. Lucky us! Eight of the eleven tracks are solo works, and three are accompanied with strings or synth. The improvisational elements in the music give it a sense of freedom to develop and explore.

"Blue Island" is one of the more upbeat tracks, and opens the CD with a swirling and sparkling feeling. I had the pleasure of seeing Brenda Warren perform some of the tracks from this album live, and "Remembering You" is so emotional that it still deeply effects her every time she plays it. The mournful cello and violin accompaniment adds even more depth to the feeling of loss and remembrance. This is an amazing piece. "Sitting On A Star" is a bit lighter in mood. Dreamy and gentle, one can feel the peace of sitting on a star, watching the wind, moon, and other stars. "Waterfall" reminds me a lot of Janie Horton's fluid, melancholy music. Very improvisational in feeling, this piece is both peaceful and evocative. "Ancient One" is one of my favorites. Dark and mysterious, this is an ensemble work with piano and string quartet. It reminds me a little of the theme from "Requiem For a Dream," with an unsettled mood and a lot of inner turmoil. I like this one a lot! "Moonlight" is another favorite. Dark, but very peaceful, it is both flowing and graceful. "Goodnight" follows "Moonlight" almost as a continuation of the mood. "In the Light Again" is another beauty, full of hope and moving forward.

Brenda Warren has produced a stunning collection of piano solo and ensemble works with "As Years Go By."

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Mostly Carolina beach music, which is not a good thing .......2006-02-28

I only gave this more than one star because with George Benson and O.C. Smith involved, it is obviously not entirely Embers music. This is good, because their music is representative of
"Carolina Beach Music", music so awful that outside of the the two Carolinas, Georgia, maybe Virginia, no one knows what it is or could stand to listen for long. While in the majority of the known universe, the term "shag" refers to the sex act, the ironic thing is that "shag" refers to something altogether different in the Bible-Belt extremist conservative southeastern US (and thank God, nowhere else), that being a sped-up swing dance done to mostly really bad local R&B music performed by really talentless groups of the region. That is the garbage you will hear in this compilation.

While the word "shag" speaks to the sex act, the shag dance is definitely a mood-killer for any normal human being. You've got to see it done to see what a total sexual turn-off this dance is - it's about as sexy as a Texas two-step, yet an entire culture of mediocrity that only exists in the south Atlantic has grown up around this effeminate, laughable Lindy done at warp-speed. It's definitely more embarrassing to witness when performed by a male of the species, but is still pathetic when done by anything with two legs.

Notwithstanding their on-stage outfits of the period, the Beach Boys music of their golden days in the 1960's had much too much class and sophistication to qualify as beach music (plus, you can't shag dance to it), but those unsuspecting people who move to the southeast from other parts of the US or world always assume that is what is meant by "beach music". Maybe that is true in the universe at large, but not in the southeast. Although the great songs of the Drifters and many classic Motown songs have been unfortunately labeled as "beach music" by those involved in the culture, "Carolina Beach Music", more specifically, is much more often than not simply embarrassingly awful music written and performed by bands from the Carolinas, usually aging white men wearing Sansabelt pants and Hawaiian shirts. The Band of Oz, the Embers, the Breeze Band, the Poor Souls, Billy Scott and the Prophets, the Catalinas, the Fantastic Shakers, are but a few of the local bands that make tons of money in the southeast and that could not get arrested off of their home turf. The popularity of this garbage being confined to the Carolinas says alot about the taste of the residents of those two states.

      * * *

The artistry of a classical musician.

The serenity of a yoga teacher.

NIGHTINGALE, the solo recording debut of the orchestral flutist-turned-improvisational artist Sarah Swersey, cuts straight to the heart, transporting the listener on a deeply inward journey to a place of emotion and stillness.

These improvised lullabies are far from being mere sleep aids--they're ideal accompaniment for yoga (Sarah is a Kripalu-trained teacher), massage, meditation, and relaxation, and the stunning solo flute sound most definitely stands up to active listening as well.

Half of the tracks in this enchanting collection are based on traditional melodies from a world of cultures: the Yiddish children's song "Alef Bas," the Sephardic lullaby "A La Nana y La Buba," and "Arrorro," a graceful Spanish song that Sarah used to perform in concert halls around Europe during her days as principal flutist with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Tenerife in the Canary Islands. True to her classical roots, Sarah also plays sweet variations on the Brahms Lullaby.

Perhaps most engaging, though, are Sarah's original compositions, particularly the emotionally charged 16-minute "Nina's Peace," dedicated to a cousin who died young. Another original, "Mozaique," evokes the sounds, sights, and smells of a family trip to Israel when Sarah was 7 years old.

NIGHTINGALE was co-produced by 2002 Grammy nominee David Darling, the innovative cellist who has featured Sarah's flute on three of his most recent improvisational recordings.

5 out of 5 stars An Ethereal Journey into Sleep.......2004-03-17

When you come across music as enchanting as "Sarah Swersey's Nightingale" it becomes increasingly difficult to describe the sheer electricity and vibration of this soul-lifting sound. Solo flute reaches new levels of creativity in the hands of Sarah Swersey. Not only will this music lull you to sleep or enhance your yoga practise, it surrounds you in a comforting blanket of long-forgotten memories.

Sarah began playing at the early age of 9 and then later earned her master's degree at Yale University School of Music. She has toured the United States, Soviet Union and Europe with the American Soviet Youth Orchestra. She also spent years as principal flutists with Oruesta Sinfonica de Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Since her return to her native New York, she has performed at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and at the Tanglewood Music Festival. Her music has been featured in Yoga Journal and Body & Soul.

She is also a trained and accredited Kripalu Yoga Teacher and her music does speak of the inward journey. She seems to excel at spontaneous expression and when she leaves the cage of sheet music at home, her true inner beauty is set free in spellbinding sounds.

It is as if you are being called by a dancing spirit winding its way into a mountainous region where the notes echo in the most mysterious of ways. Or perhaps it is a magical nightingale singing sweetly to you as you remember moments of your childhood when you felt safe and nurtured as you fell into a contented sleep. These are the dreams of babies or the fulfilled longings of the soul. Either way, this music will take you back to the most peaceful place in your life.

"Sounds echoing off walls of caves in the distance" explains the haunting quality, but doesn't even explain the sweet innocence and heart stirring elements of Sarah's playing. Then, there are elements of wistfulness, a lingering and delicate ambiance and mesmerizing elements that will lead you to a state of complete peace.

A number of tracks in this collection are improvised lullabies based on cultural favorites. This collection is haunting, calming, beautiful and inspired! A must-have CD for your relaxation collection. Sarah Swersey's music frees the heart.

      5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing, haunting..........2004-02-21

...soothing, soulful, devastatingly personal, and a thousand other descriptions that don't quite capture the effect of this deceptively simple music. This incredible CD could be used as medicine for anyone with high blood pressure or anxiety.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing, for babies AND parents.......2003-12-11

The music on this disc is absolutely beautiful. Very peaceful and soothing. We started playing it for our newborn at bedtime from day one. She loves it...

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Massage.......2003-11-15

I'm a massage therapist, and most massage music is a combination of many musical instruments and ambient, synthesized sounds. While this can be nice, sometimes I long for the simplicity of one instrument played beautifully. Nightingale fills this longing. These songs are very relaxing, while never becoming bland.
