While she came to global prominence as the female singer on the Buena Vista Social Club album and in the film, Omara Portuondo has a career that--like the other participants--stretches back many years. She puts her experience to good use on this record, sounding for all the world like a Cuban Billie Holiday, smoky and quietly tragic, with a history of lost love. The lush arrangements, which often sound transplanted straight from 1950s Havana, frame her voice exquisitely while guests such as Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, and Rubén González add their inimitable talents to the mix. Her reading of "The Man I Love" ("El Hombre Que Yo Ame") is also a microcosm of the disc--slightly jazzy, with a yearning vocal that's emotive without ever being overwrought. There's little doubt that Portuondo is a world-class singer, and this is the ideal showcase for her extraordinary talents. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars What a voice!.......2007-05-13

I had heard Omara Portuondo only on the Buena Vista Social Club CD, so I didn't know what to expect. I really love this CD. Her selections and delivery show great emotional range and a sense of humor -- lovely!

5 out of 5 stars Omara Sears my Synapses. Let her Blister yours, too.. .......2006-10-27

Euphoria. Endorphin overload. Shake yourself a martini or something equally svelte, put this on, find the divan on the patio and just let all gringo unpleasantness evaporate into the Habana infused dusk.

This is the best of all the Buena Vista Social Club productions, IMAO. And whatever that woman up in one of the featured reviews means in saying that this music isn't danceable, I have no idea. Maybe she's in traction or something and can't move. I mean, I barely can myself. It takes something special to bring whatever rhythm I have out of me, but Omara does it every time. No drum machines or thumping bass, true- she's much more potent than that. It's much more a Billie Holiday slow burn, but in Spanish, y el espanol es una idioma mas proximo al corazón que ingles.

El fuego va consumirle.

Sorry about that. Soy el asesino del espanol. But it is still one of el gitano's axioms that if he can break his excreble Spanish down on a lady, then the repartee is practically over. And Omara is one of his very most secret weapons. Loose her, and the party or date will- how to say this - improve. Coulé, coupé, touché.

It happens every time. This album comes with el gitano's seal of guarantee. Buy it, use it with judicious abandon, and enjoy..

4 out of 5 stars Excellent representation of this genre.......2005-10-06

Another wonderful cd from the buena vista social club. Excellent variety of fast paced and slow songs. I highly recommend this cd if you have bought any of the others.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful music.......2004-05-14

Very laid back CD. This CD really highlights Omara's skill as a singer, she sings with great emotion. Highly reccomended! One of the best recordings out of the "Buena Vista" series. On this recording, thankfully, Ry Cooder is not mucking about, this recording is pure Cuban soul.

5 out of 5 stars Builds on a great foundation.......2004-04-27

Since I was first introduced to the jewels of Cuba's past, I have craved more and more of this wonderful music. Omara's solo CD does not dissapoint, her voice is beautiful and the orchestrations are superb. Detractors of Ry Cooder's slide guitar will be happy to know that it is absent from this release.

What sounds like an early-model Casio playing "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" quickly gives way to a classic Perez Prado riff. On top of it all, Lou Bega--born in Germany to a Ugandan father and Italian mother--hoarsely exhorts the floor to "Mambo No. 5." A runaway hit in more than a dozen countries, it's an agreeable trifle, if ultimately not as charming as "Macarena" proved to be a few summers back. Throughout this cash-in album, Bega comes off like a cross between a less clever Tone-Loc and a less inspired Buster Poindexter. If there's a great Europop-Cuban fusion in the making, its standard-bearers will have to come up with more durable trashy fun than this. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great for one or two spins.......2007-05-11

This is actually a fairly decent album compared to some the other stuff out there, on the air. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the necessary lasting power to make it much more than a cleaver, one man show, studio designed, self absorbed, novelty CD. His self adoring, ego-manic lyrics get old real fast even if some of them are no worse than another popular novelty song from some years back. Remember "Don't Worry, Be Happy"? Additionally, his lyrical content does nothing to give women the honor and respect they deserve. In fact, his lyrics and whole attitude of the album is very degrading toward women.

Mambo #5 is just another one of those catchy songs that you'll remember for years just like we still remember "Achy Breaky Heart", "Tip-Toe Through The Tulips" by Tiny Tim, the old lady, Mrs. Miller, whose fame was in her whistling of songs and Napoleon XIV with "They're Com'n To Take Me Away, Ha Ha".

Just because we remember certain songs doesn't necessarily make them great. Lou Bega had a catchy stinger and he got all of the mileage out of it in one release. Which may be a blessing in disguise! Oddly enough, I still enjoy this CD every so often for the melodies and rhythms. Then again, I also have the remastered album containing Napoleon XIV's only -dare I say- Top 40 HIT. And remember... Don't Worry, Be Happy!

5 out of 5 stars Mambo Some More.......2007-03-19

This CD is very fun and exciting. The music envokes fun, movement and laughs. What a feel good way to get into Mambo.

4 out of 5 stars Good album.......2006-08-24

I used to line dance to "I Got A Girl" and I always liked " Mambo No. 5" and Lou also does a good song towards the end with a salsa beat to it. A very unique album.

2 out of 5 stars good for kids, I guess.......2006-07-20

The music is way too "synthy" for me. In many cases the "band" sounds like a synthesizer and a drum box. Many of the lyrics are inane. Lou's voice seems ok. My 8 year old likes it a lot.

The songs have a certain pop catchiness to them, but there just isn't much depth there. I have a hard time believing that this is the king of mambo. I certeinly wish that I was as studly as he is.

1 out of 5 stars As bad as the warnings in other reviews.......2006-04-05

Mambo #5 caught my ear when listening to the car radio. It is the only passable song on the CD. I couldn't even listen all the way through the others. Just awful. I paid one cent plus shipping for it used and still feel ripped off by Mr. Bega.

Mark "Snowboy" Cotgrove made his name playing on seminal acid-jazz records by the likes of Shakatak, Mother Earth, and the James Taylor Quartet. After his 1996 release, Pit Bull Latin Jazz, Snowboy became a household name to those who argue that jazz is dance music--sweaty, hyperkenetic movers loaded with percussion and percolating with in-the-pocket horn charts. On Mambo Rage, Snowboy (now joined by his band, the Latin Section) blazes through a set of rollicking butt-shakers that somehow manage to raise the temperature in the room without the aid of dozens of perspiring dancers. Looking for some refreshingly cliché-free new-school Latin dance music? Here it is. --S. Duda

5 out of 5 stars lizzy lizzy golden throat-.......2006-06-03

I purchased this lp in 81 and it remains a favorite. there are those who could construe lizzy's vocal approach as art school pretension but I always found her hiccuping sub-poetics to be endlessly endearing-(recognizing the Rimbaudian connection may help). Instrumentally the lp is quite strong-Lizzy's vocals being the 5th element-a sort of neo/afro-carib rhythm section led by percussionist wally badarou. enjoy along with press color '79/rosa yemen'78 , however, less sure of her later work.

1 out of 5 stars Irritating.......2006-04-17

I was excited when I first purchased this album because I had never owned a Lizzy Mercier Descloux album before and I knew that she was a cult figure. That said, I was majorly disappointed when I listened to it for the first time. There are no real lyrics to speak of, just Lizzy making weird sounds or repeating words in her heavy French accent that don't make any sense. On top of that, the music is very herky-jerky, stop/start, sputtery, and tends to sound the same track after track. The album was recorded in Nassau, in the Bahamas, and there is a very Bahamas feel to it, but the individual songs are not that different from one another and eventually the overall sound gets irritating. If you are into that sort of thing, then you will love this album, but for me it is all about the lyrics and the voice, and I just can't connect with this album. The songs "Les Baisers D'Amants" and "The Sun Is Shining" are probably the two best on the album. Ze Records is in the process of reissuing all of the albums in Lizzy's repertoire and I'm hoping that the others sound better than this one.

5 out of 5 stars One of maybe three or four of my all-time favorites..........2004-09-04

...I played this so much when it came out on vinyl in '82 that I almost got tossed out of the loft I was living in. Crazy, intelligent music -- all I've had of it the past twenty years or so, since I lost the LP, has been a crummy cassette. Now with the CD out (and with five "new" tracks!) I can listen to it all the time again. Glad I don't have roommates any longer!

Lizzy was just amazing. She died a few months ago, but her timeless music lives on.

4 out of 5 stars A Latin dance classic!.......2000-07-16

I was captivated by Azúcar Moreno's stunning "Bandido" dance track from the Eurovision Song Contest 1990, also bought the album but didn't find the remaining material as interesting. But getting their "Mambo" album from 1991, it really made me a fan! There are certain resemblances to Madonna's "Vogue" in the title track but the latin touch makes it stand up very much in its own right. Great track! It's followed by the melancholic, yet very sensuous "Lujuria" (Desire) which has remained one of my all-time favorites of theirs. The next song is a good dance track as well but to me, it's hard to distract from the lyrics which celebrates the "brave toreros", and I don't approve of bullfighting at all. Boo! The mood shifts to the Latin "Tú quieres más", followed by "Ahora o nunca", written & produced by Raúl Orellana & Jaime Stinus, the men behind "Bandido", and it's very much in the same vein. "Feria" is somewhat frenetic, followed by another up-tempo dance track "Bailaor", featuring the sisters' characteristic Flamenco singing. "Tus besos me matan" (Your Kisses Are Killing Me) is another sensuous laid-back track, followed by four cover versions: "Loca Reloca" (Higher & Higher), a great Spanish versions of Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black", and the classic "Bésame mucho" and "El condor pasa". There are two bonus mixes of "Mambo" and "Torero" but they're almost identical to the album versions. All in all, a landslide of an album, still one of their very best!

5 out of 5 stars My introduction to Azucar Moreno.......2000-04-10

Although I am 1/2 latino, I am not a native or fluent speaker of Spanish. And yet, this CD urged me into reviewing my university Spanish. I'm usually one of those impatient people that jumps tracks on CD's to find my favorite songs, but with this CD I don't have to do that...I like every song. I picked up this CD in Mexico at a used CD store. My wife and I had been doing some romantic dining at La Taberna Española, and when we asked the waiter which band was playing on the overhead music, he told us, "Azucar Moreno." I now own almost all of Azucar Moreno's CD's

5 out of 5 stars Buy it for Track 10.......2001-01-19

I suppose it's not really fair. It's a compilation of various artists and all the songs are, at the very least, good. But....Jorge Dalto's piano on Track 10 (Samba de Flora) is way beyond good. It's great, it's beautiful to listen to. What a gift to be able to improvise like that. Would've been a treat to hear him live, in Rio. Oh well, next life.

5 out of 5 stars absolute monster disk.......2000-11-19

from the deejays of a now defunkt south london club. man, i wish i had made it to that club. disk arranged geographically: start out in south asia (bally sagoo's mix of "kinna sohna" by ustad nusrat fateh ali khan, then to the north africa (funk club mix of "didi' by rai singer khaled, on to sub-saharan africa and the power-pop sweetness of "angelina" by the ghanaian highlife band sweet talks, across the ocean to latin america and brazilian percussionist airto's "samba de flora" and end up in the states with luther barnes and the red budd gospel choir doing "my god can do anything." and this disk nearly does everything.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful in spots - Inconsistent overall........2000-10-07

I bought "Big Noise" on the strength of the 1st two songs. Both are HOT - excellent dance re-mixes that make international music not only accessible but addictive.

There's a foray into some adequate, more traditional Latin music, but it doesn't quite fit in with this CD. If you're actually looking for real mambo, Latin swing etc... there are much better compilations.

The Gospel song at the end is good, but it's somewhat inconsistent with the style of the rest of the music. Maybe that's the point. If you want something with a lot of different styles, this may suit you. However, I found myself skipping past many of the songs to get to the 3 or so I found worthwhile. In the end, it's just too much of a mish mash of unrelated styles to cohere very well. There's not enough to connect the songs stylistically.

The first 3 songs on this CD deserve a 4 or 5 star rating by themselves. However, as a whole the CD is weakened by a lot of chaff.

      4 out of 5 stars A good buy..........2000-08-19

I'd bought this cd, only because i wanted to get the classy remix of "Kinna Sohna"....fortunately the album turned out to be pretty good!

The Kinna Sohna remix is really cool...great bass lines and an acid jazz feel. However i prefer the original version of 'Didi' rather than this one....the original seems to have more life in it. 'Mango, mango...' has wonderful horn arrangements and a great melody. 'Samba de flora' has some exceptional piano runs, done by the great Jorge Dalto...one of my favs on the compilation. The ramsey lewis piece has a groove/soul feel to it...while 'you're the one' has some great guitar work.

tracks 5,6,8 and 9 were quite ordinary - nothing exceptional,....they are the kind one associates with 'happy' south american music with good beats. this is the only thing that kept me from giving this compilation 5 stars.

All the other tracks are pretty good....

      I'd say a good buy!

      Album Description

2004's Ibiza Summer Season marks the 10th Anniversary of island hot spot Cafe Mambo, celebrated as the place to kick back, watch the sun set, as well as party late into the night with a unique, International mix of THE beautiful people. Mixed by celebrated `Mambo resident and DJ Pete Gooding, this is a fitting album of the finest collection of tracks to chill to and allow that `Mambo Moment' anytime of the year

CD1 showcases some of the best downtempo cuts with plenty of variety. From recent tracks by Goldfrapp and J. Boogie's Dubtronic Science to classic chillout tunes by Ballistic Brothers and A Man Called Adam and leftfield gems by Cantoma (aka Café del Mar resident Phil Mison) and David Holmes (remixed by Two Lone Swordsmen) in between, this is the perfect way to create a definitive sunset vibe.

CD2 reflects the cooler side of house music that would be played at the Cafe soon after sunset. Opening with an exclusive intro by Rollercone, it sets a dreamy, tripped out, soothing mood to groove to into the night. Featuring classic tracks from 51 Days (the classic "Paper Moon") and Prana (aka Deep Dish, updated for 2004 by Skylark) plus favorites from King Kooba and Beanfield this super chilled album will definitely sound great in Ibiza, but you can be assured that it will sound just as good at home wherever you are.

5 out of 5 stars Pete Gooding Is The Man.......2003-11-12

For anyone that has been to Ibiza and chilled at Cafe Del Mar or Mambo you you will love this album. For anyone that hasn't ... you will love this album. Pete Gooding mix's up the best in ambiance for the first CD and then gets phunky on the house tip for the second. But unlike other types of these Ibiza compilations that can drag, Pete makes sure he keeps it moving and his mixing skills and track selection are right on the money. This alubum truly represents Ibiza and if you are ever on the white island stop by Mambo and peep Mr. Gooding on the one's and two's.
