in 1967 and 1968, Ice were a much-touted but slightly mysterious recording band, constantly on the radio (including the famous John Peel Show with Jimi Hendrix and Traffic), but seldom seen on television and never live. The band later joined up as Affinity. This CD represents the groups entire recorded output of the 60s rock group Ice. Angel Air. 2004.

While it's not unusual for me to have several different recordings of the same work by different performers, this is the only case in which I have two identical CDs, one for home and one for the car. I have to assume my Scots-Irish ancestry has some Nordic blood, as this music affects me powerfully. I haven't even read the program notes, so it can't be that the text's mesmerizing. This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if mead is your drink, it's perfect.

There are some really awesome moments on this disc. All of the Voluspa segments, especially the final one describing Ragnarok, and The Song of the Mill are very well done. The stark atmosphere serves to not only enhance the singing portion, but really draw you into the song. The booklet that comes with the CD is essential, with beautiful translations of the poems that put Caroline Larrington's Poetic Edda to shame.

But there are also a lot of weak moments. I can't say that there is anything interesting in the instrumentals, which are fortunately few and far between. The Tale of Thrym is ok the first time through, but loses it's appeal very quickly. Odin's Rune Verses lack emotion compared to the rest of the pieces.

I also found the Italian Opera style singing a bit imposing. The rolling of the r's is sometime distracting, and I wondered the first time I heard it if that's what the language really sounds like. Of course, this is my first exposure to Icelandic, so I really couldn't tell you if its right or wrong, but the male singers do it much more than the females. Perhaps it just comes from their background as opera singers.

Overall, this is a good thing to have if you're at all interested in Norse/Icelandic/Viking mythology. If you're not, I think you can skip it.

I thought nothing like this existed, yet here it is! The Sequentia group sings ancient Nordic mythological poems, in very much the manner of ancient Skalds. The skald was a bard, or troubadour, of ancient Scandinavia. In the Sagas, many of the greatest skalds came from Iceland, a land colonized by Norwegians unwilling to live under the dictatorship of King Harald Harfa-gri (Harald Fairhair). The songs on this album are recited in Icelandic, a language that has changed only slightly from the Old Norse spoken by their ancestors. The style of performance is a specualtion, to a certain degree, but very much like that of most traditional Nordic folk music, traditions that have been passed on for centuries.

For some reason, it doesn't sound quite nordic to me. Did they really roll their 'R's in the Old Norse, or is Sequentia putting a Latin spin on it? It sounds like Italian opera accompanied by medieval Icelandic instruments.

I am impressed by, actually, the insert book! It has 47 thin pages of history, lyrics, and translation.

I bought this CD because the only foreign language I really retain is from foreign music. The lyrics are decently clear for learning. I didn't expect the insert book to have Icelandic lyrics, but it has that and a translation. There is a summary on each of the poems also.

The music is a bit simple, but the real art is in the song. The singing could even go without instrumentation. The album is 76:52 minutes long.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

I have been listening to great scores for many years and this collection is truly inspirational in so far as the choice of different scores takes you on a journey of listening pleasure matched by only a few collections.The price is incredibly reasonable for hours of listening pleasure. "Ice Cream Man" is by far my fav P album. Lots of laid back beats & flows....a lot more Westcoast influenced than his other sh**. Pick this up if you're a fan of the South or West

Just buy it. I mean, Break you off sumptin, check my crackhouse, no more tears, bout it bout it, 1/2 on a dank, is a real solid album from the P durin tha golden years of rap, specially in the south.

5 out of 5 stars Tha Don Makes A Classic Right Next To "Ghetto D".............2006-01-24

Before Master P became the much-maligned, often-satirised lampoon that he is today, he was the owner of a veritable empire- one built on the seminal N'Awlins thump of gladiators like Mac, Soulja Slim and Mystikal. While his output today would certainly suggest otherwise, Master P also held his own against even his most prodigious upstarts, cranking out a string of classics that includes Ghetto D, the first TRU record and Ice Cream Man, widely regarded as Master P's foremost artistic work and one that belongs in the pantheon inhabited by the likes of BG's "Chopper City In The Ghetto" and Juvenile's "400 Degreez".

What separates this recording from the aforementioned Cash Money classics is its seamless incorporation of West Coast sensibilities into its swampy Cajun jambalaya. As all faithful No Limit fiends know, Master P's transplantation from California to the third coast had a marked influence on his musical produce, and this is pronouncedly evident on this record- the thudding, subwoofer-mauling basslines, the layered synths, the hypnotically midtempo rhythms, all coalescing into a thick, arresting sound built for leisurely cruises in the Coupe Deville. While there is nothing startlingly original about this record, its strengths lie in its startling consistency- by all standards this is an incredibly long album (20 tracks, practically none of which are skits), but the quality, from the downtempo thump of the title track to the uncouth, misogynistic but downright funky "Playa From Around The Way" and the horrific dirge of "Bout That Drama", never threatens to wane.

From a lyrical standpoint P casts his net across familiar ground, spinning compelling yarns of murder and narcotics that were so prevalent in early (and hell, modern) N'awlins rap. While the depth of P's commentary never really veers beyond gratuitously callous narratives delivered in a simplistic, honest fashion, it's hard to hold this against him when the album is so grippingly listenable and thoroughly enjoyable. The gems are innumerable- the cess-blowing haze of "1-2 On A Bag Of Dank", the Rick James meets Nino Brown boogie of "How G's Ride", the timeless vitriol of "Bout It Bout It", all radiating the striking sense of immediacy that characterises the very best gangsta rap. The imagery is stark, portraits of P's bleak, filthy psyche unobscured by overproduction or verbose pretension. For such a long album, Ice Cream Man radiates with succinctness- everything on this record aims for the throat, each song a 3 to 5 minute, hook-laden anthem that should put a goofy smile on even the most disillusioned rap connoisseur's face.

Forget the fact that this is the same grisly looking grandpa who dropped the immortal lines "I'm like Tiger 'cause I live in the Woods" and do yourself a favour- pick this record up, settle into the plush leather interior of your lowrider and give this record a spin. You might find that it might become a permanent resident in your disc changer. A remarkable snapshot of the No Limit empire at the height of its creative powers and a vital listen for anybody who couldn't figure out how P managed to shift so many units.

This album is very good. It is one of Master P's best. The original pressing is very hard to find. Reprints have flooded the market, but those can be considered as worthless. The original pressing has 20 tracks. The rerelease is missing "The Ghetto Won't Change." The original pressing has a blue box on the front cover artwork. The blue box says, "also contains hit singles, Mr. Ice Cream Man and Bout It, Bout It," The rerelease will have FBI warnings and "EMI" on the spine of the album. Either copy is worth having, just don't be scammed into thinking it's an Original and in reality it's a cheap fake. This album is a must have for any Bay Area or No Limit Rap fan. 5 Stars

What a crowning achievement to bring "Reel Love: The Cinematic Romance Album", released by Silva America and featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus ~ conductors are Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine and David Temple director of the chorus ~ one can only expect the highest quality of performances and quench the thirst of all "film-score-buffs".

    Even if I don't own this CD (stuff I have on 33 rpm), I had to approve the other critics here. To know Barbara Cook is to participate to the Great Broadway Era with one of its essential star performer.
    Cook was made for the stage and, following next, her live shows are quite impressive. Her voice can be tiny at times, but who doesn't get older?
    Just listen to Glitter and be Gay: a Bernstein masterpiece, but a Cook personal creation. (Only Sumi Jo made it as good on her Carnegie Hall show).
    All B'way fan should know Barbara Cook...

    Before Barbara Cook became a cabaret performer, she was a fantastic Broadway star. This out of print cd focuses on the songs from her revivals and original productions with the omission of The Glass Harp. It goes chronologically from the beginning of her career with the shows Candide, Plain and Fancy, and Flahooley. (Sadly they were flops.) Then it reaches The Music Man where she finally became a star. Her Till There was You is marvelous. The last three songs are from her 1975 At Carnegie Hall album. I wish that this was replaced with numbers from her shows. It doesn't quite fit in with the phase. I guess this cd wanted to be an outlook on her career in general. Barbara Cook had a clear warm soprano. If only her 1958 album Songs of Perfect Propriety could be released.

    Just to hear her voice intentionally break with emotion on "Dear Friend" will affect you deeply. This is a fine document of a great career and a stunning voice. You will treasure it.

    When I listen to this CD it brings bak a lot of memories from when I was younger. This CD right here to me is what set it off for Master P. He took note of what Eazy-E did with Ruthless Records and made his own southern version called No Limit Records. But put aside all of the success Master P had with No Limit as an amazing businesmen. This CD is one of the top 10 ever released in rap history period. It's very dynamic and has not only the Bay Area/Richmond, CA feel that a lot of early No Limit releases had but it also has that Dirty Grimy Southern sound that Master P help push to the forefront of the rap scene. If you are a fan of rap and don't have this in your collection your missin out on an very importand piece of the puzzle. . .
