One of America's seminal 1960s rock bands, Buffalo Springfield's brief career yielded just three studio albums before its various members splintered into a variety of successful solo career and new group endeavors (including Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Poco, and Loggins & Messina). In fact, one of its chief architects bolted before this, their last album, was even completed. Fortunately for both the band and their fans, Neil Young left behind a pair of pop gems--the band showcase "On the Way Home" and the country-tinged "I Am a Child." Stephen Stills largely picked up the slack in Young's absence, penning a slate of tunes as ambitious as they were eclectic (his "Questions" here eventually evolving into CSNY's "Carry On"), while Richie Furay weighs in with three tunes, including the clear Poco precursor "Kind Woman." A bit more pop-oriented than its predecessor, the often haunting Buffalo Springfield Again, but nearly as memorable. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Best time around for Steve.......2007-01-30

Steve improves on everything, guitar, production, songwriting. Possibly His best performed and produced Springfield songs are here. Four days Gone, Pretty Girl Why, Special Care, Uno Mundo and The better than CSNY original version of Questions.

4 out of 5 stars Near-classic Coda from a Classic Band.......2007-01-06

This was the swan song of one of the most influential groups in the history of rock, country-rock, and Americana music. The primary members - Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Richie Furay - went on to found Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young as well as Poco, and Jim Messina later became half of Loggins and Messina. Legend has it that it was difficult to put together this last album due to bitter squabbling among the group members. And it is perhaps the "weakest" of their three albums, though there are some indispensable gems contained within. Richie Furay's "Kind Woman", for instance, is one of the prettiest country ballads ever written. Neil Young's two contributions, "On the Way Home" and "I Am a Child", are classics as well, the latter having the feel of a solo performance and shaping things to come for Neil. Three of Stephen Stills' songs, "Four Days Gone", "Special Care" and "Questions", are also worthy of classic status. ("Question" was later incorporated into CSN&Y's song "Carry On".) The rest of the twelve songs on this set are less memorable, but worth hearing to get the complete experience of the diversity of the band, as they even dabble in calypso and lounge-jazz stylings. It is interesting to note, too, that this is the only one of the three albums not represented in its entirety on the BS box set, so if you are a "completist", you will want to get this one. I think some enterprising label (Rhino?) could do justice to this great band by releasing a 2- or 3-CD set, which could include all three albums in their entirety, plus rare bonus and live tracks not included in the box set.

4 out of 5 stars Last time was a good time.......2006-05-01

Forget about the discord and solo effort throwaway song claims. This is an album of adult sensibilities delivered with youthful enthusiasm. The songs are lovingly crafted and still resonate with me after almost 40 years. This album is a classic and a gem. Buffalo Springfield was a supergroup before that word was invented. I would give it four and a half stars.

4 out of 5 stars An Uneven Affair!.......2006-03-25

Buffalo Springfield's last album is a somewhat uneven affair. Neil Young was out of the band before the album was finished, and he only contributes 2 and a half songs. Vocally he is only audible on the fine country-styled "I Am a Child". Young's opening track ( sung by Furay?) "On the Way Home" is another highlight.

With Young out, it was up to Steven Stills and Richie Furay to come up with new material. Stills is a fine songwriter, but some of his songs here sound a little uninspired. The light "Pretty Girl Why" is a pleasant classical Buffalo Springfield type song. "Special Care" ( the "heaviest" track on the album and "Questions" are both great recordings.

Richie Furay has penned two fine ( and two weak ) songs for the album. The catchy "Merry-Go-Round" is a fine song that may have had hit-potentials. His closing track "Kind Woman" is a strong country ballad - actually there is also a lot of "soul" in the song, and I would have loved to hear Otis Redding do a version.

The rest of the album is more or less throwaways. One is almost unlistenable ( the sirupy "The Hour of not Quite Rain")

But with at least 6 strong tracks this is a must have for any fan of Stills and Young.

4 out of 5 stars Stills the One.......2006-02-24

Patched together by Jim Messina after the band had broken up, this is still worth tracking down for Stills' compositions, which dominate the set. "Special Care" smokes; the draft-dodger lament, "Four Days Gone," is powerful; and the hard-rockin' "Questions" does just that: it rocks harder than CSNY's version (they re-recorded it as the outro of "Carry On" on Deja Vu). Neil checks in with two tunes: the transcendent "I Am a Child" and "On the Way Home," which finds Richie Furay handling lead vocals. The weakest moment? The insipid "In the Hour of Not Quite Rain," which features lyrics penned by the winner of a radio contest.

1 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2003-11-25

I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.

Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.

5 out of 5 stars Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23

Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

Amazon.com essential recording

This in-concert CD caps Buddy Guy's partnership with harp hero Junior Wells, who died of lymphoma in January 1998. The set, taped five years earlier at Guy's Chicago nightclub, is an unabashedly sentimental journey back to their roots. It's just Guy and Wells on acoustic guitar and harmonica, cutting up and playing their own standards like Guy's "You Better Watch Yourself" and Wells's signature "Hoodoo Man," as well as classics by such influences as Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Jimmy Rogers, and even Ray Charles. Guy's focused intensity is offset by Wells's good-natured clowning, yet the performance never sacrifices its strong musicality. --Ted Drozdowski

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars ****1/4.......2004-03-10

The sound is excellent on this 1998 live album, and Buddy Guy and the late, great Junior Wells both lay down some of their best vocal performances on record.

Committed to tape in March, 1993, "Last Time Around - Live At Legends" documents the very last time Guy and Wells took the stage together. The arrangements are completely bare-bones, just Buddy Guy's Gibson guitar and Junior Wells' chromatic harp, but the performances are full of power and authority, and Guy's expressive tenor voice and Junior Wells' rougher baritone blend smoothly on songs like "Hoochie Coochie Man" and "What I'd Say".
Virtually every song is a highlight, actually...Junior Wells plays muscular, amplified harp behind Guy's lead vocal on "Key To The Highway" and "Oh Baby", and takes the lead on "Hoodoo Man Blues", and the duo share lead vocal duties on a great medley of songs from Jimmy Reed's good-natured repertoire of blues n' boogie, as well as a cover of Jimmy Rogers' "That's All Right".

This is one great slice of classic, acoustic blues which would look at home on any real blues fan's shelf.
I mean, why do we need synthesizers and computer sampling when two middle-aged men can sit down with just a harmonica and an acoustic guitar and make it sound this good?

5 out of 5 stars Best from the best.......2003-02-01

This is the best acoustic live album from the greatest duo in blues history.

5 out of 5 stars Just A Great Live CD!.......1999-07-15

If you want to sit back and put on some easy listening music then this is the CD for you. I like nothing better than putting this CD on loud after some lung exercises and relaxing! Just great!

4 out of 5 stars Fine Final Bow from Blues' Dynamic Duo.......1999-06-19

When I want to turn a new friend onto the blues, it's best to reach for the cream like B.B. King, Bobby Bland, Junior Parker, Muddy Waters - and, maybe best of all: Junior Wells and Buddy Guy. Perhaps it'll be "Hoodoo Man Blues" on Delmark, or any of their fine live releases, but these two summed up the majestic grit and soul of human expression in song. But we've finally lost Junior Wells, a gentlemen and inspiration who always took the time to talk to fans, DJ's, and reviewers like myself. This posthumous release, while not superior to their previous acoustic-flavored albums (like "Alone and Acoustic," or especially "Buddy and the Juniors")captures Junior and Buddy's chemistry one last time. Some of this record is as stunning anything they ever waxed. Most of it is good, down-home, back-porch blues. Admittedly, Junior may been erratic in later years ( with often over-produced albums and sometimes painful-to-watch stage behavior) all due to health problems and the neglect of a music world that salivates over guitarists instead of singing harpists. By the time of this recording, Buddy had only recently been even admitted to the mainstream (and even then, he has trouble getting radio airplay) while Junior and most true bluesmen languished on the margins. Wells was largely under-recorded for most of the '80's until he signed with Telarc, where he in fact made some notable music even in an obviously weaker condition . Silvertone deserves credit for seeing fit to release what has come be a fitting farewell to blues' favorite one-two punch.

5 out of 5 stars Dee's Best CD Ever.......2003-11-06

This is not a single, it's a full CD of live performances of some of Dee's best songs. These acoustic versions are the true Dee Carstensen. She has one of the most powerful voices you'll ever hear, her harp is unique & amazing, her back up musicians are the best, and there's a duet on here that's out of this world. A live audience must give her energy, because the power of this CD is 10 times as strong as the other albums recorded in the studio. If you can't see Dee live, this is the next best thing.

Ah, what could have been. The final Buffalo Springfield album comes up slightly short of their legendary second lp (Buffalo Springfield Again). If you didn't know any of the history of this record, you would find the breadth and scope of this record to be truly amazing, rivalling the Beatles White Album. Smart pop (On The Way Home), latin bounce (Uno Mundo), stadium rock (Special Care), beautiful country (Kind Woman), and Neil Young (I Am A Child) to name a few. They sould like different bands, almost.

To know the story is to know that essentially they were 3 bands at this point. Stephen Stills did most of his songs by himself with studio musicians. Neil Young had little to do with the record except his tracks. Richie Furray and Jim Messina worked on their tracks.

Be that as it may, throw this in your cd player and cruise on down the road. You're going to love the journey. And these songs and performances are so good, they are going to stay with you whereever you go.
