      This is a challenging recording, both in its rough and ragged tone and in its mix of content. The bothers Lorenzo and Enzo Mancuso are from Sicily, but their music was sharpened by years as immigrants in England. Those years gave them exposure to many cultures from the Mediterranean, as well as a political viewpoint that subtly colors some of what you will hear on this recording. Using the devotional and folk music of Sicily as a starting point, the Mancusos and fellow traveler Antonio Marangolo merge their harsh vocal style with woodwinds, brass, strings, sax, accordion, and percussion in a soundscape as arid and yet as beautiful as the island. This is almost entirely mournful music, leaning heavily on religious themes in this strange and sometimes bittersweet tribute to the power of the Virgin Mary. This is a deep, richly layered recording that requires effort and rewards you for it. --Louis Gibson

      This expansive double CD features choice sides that DJs have spun at this legendary New York club. The sprawling comp is light years away from the contemporary music world of micromarkets and niches within niches. Here, anything goes as long as it's got a good groove. Where else would you find tracks by an avant-garde composer (Dinosaur L), a salsero (Willie Colon), and a reggae artist (Joe Gibbs) jammed up against each other? Generally speaking, the newer tracks are cooler than cool, while many of the old school jams are both funny and funky. Just about everything sounds good, and both discs end on a strong note. The first disc closes with Eddie Kendrick's "Girl You Need A Change of Mind," a big, elegant soul production. Dorothy Morrison's "Rain," a rousing gospel song from 1970, wraps up second disc. Emphasizing the connection between the church and the dance club, those twin homes of spiritual uplift, it's a great choice for a closer. --Fred Cisterna

      This cd contains dance music that differs from the mainstream. Vey dancable and addictive grooves and baselines on the first cd especially. If the song "You can't fake the feeling" doesn't make you move, what does? As a curiosity there is the only disco song of Demis Roussos, the over 10 minute long L.O.V.E. It was almost a religous experience to hear this sentimental greek singer do it. And many others. Not only for dancefloors and parties, but suitable for listening too.

      This is a compilation of two cd's, one for early in the evening the other for late hours. The material contains mixed 70's Disco tracks from the famous nightclub The Loft in New York. Cd 1 sets of with a funk track called "House Party" slowly building up the entire party. Cd 1 just keep on bulding up the party atmosphere offering groovy harmonic dance tracks. Cd 2 (late)is not so much 70's Disco tracks as the first cd. It offers more deeper House tracks with a dash of groovy sexy vibes in them hopefully making the female guest at the party to let themselves a bit more loose on the dancefloor and in their conversations with the male guests. I recommend this one because it is nice to have something that almost everyone like in your House collection.

      David Mancuso brings us more tracks from his long career of hosting The Loft dance parties. This two CD set ranges from 70s music like Fred Wesley's "House Party", Gerladine Hunt's "Can't Fake the Feeling" and Tamiko Jone's "Can't Live Without Your Love" to music from the 80s and 90s like Dinosaur L's "Go Bang", The Orb's "Little Fluffy Clouds" and "The Nervous Track" by Nuyorican Soul. The clarity of the recording seems to match Mancuso's efforts at The Loft to provide sound that enhanced the music without being over loud. I've enjoyed this set even more than his first one. Some stuff you don't find in most other collections like the "ballroom punk/industrial" music of "How Much Are They" by Jah Wobble, Jaki Liebezeit and Holger Czukay and the Santanaesque Latin-rock of Barabbas's "Women". If you have open, wide-ranging tastes in dance music or an interest in it's recent history, get this.

              This album sounds like traditional Sicilian music with a twist. It's the best album I heard in years and I have played it every night for the last three months and will go on playing it! It sounds a bit traditional, with that peculiar harmony singing that is strange to our western ears. The wailing saxophones of Antonio Marangolo makes it all the more music on a razor's edge. Traditional yet very modern, very tense, very melancholic and beautiful. I still go "wow" every time I hear these two singing together. I wanted to have ALL their albums, but they seem to have made just this one. It's a real masterpiece, but not, like most masterpieces, boring. Buy it! You certainly won't regret it!

              It is so cool to see Satan's cheerleaders are still releasing records (their stuff is so hard find). This album is no different from the previous in that it is no nonsense, non defineable stripped bare - rock. Reverb-drenched with tons of fuzz, and a great cover of Crimsomn and Clover, really. They are way meaner than the Cramps
