Unlike most compilation, every song is a winner. Great track flow, and the artwork is a perfect for the theme.

This collection of songs from his first three albums (and one EP) shows much of the creativity and awesome musicianship of Ashton Nyte (singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist). While there are some songs that aren't here that I think should have been, for the most part this does a really good job of showing the "best of". This is goth/rock at it's finest.
This band deserves more attention as Ashton is a prolific songwriter, writing honest, poetic songs. Not only that, he is a really nice, humble guy. My wife and I met him during his first ever US Tour this past October in Mississippi. Seeing as he isn't too well known over here (he's from South Africa), we were the only two people that showed up to see them (besides a handful of other people there for the opening act, and they didn't have a clue who The Awakening were) . Even though they could've skipped this gig (they had a 15 hour drive non-stop to do another gig in another town two or three states away the next night), Ashton insisted on performing. They played 11 songs (dedicating one to my wife for her birthday) and played like there were a hundred people there. They blew the other band and their friends away. Afterwards, Ashton asked my wife if they sounded okay (to which she responded "Yes! Of course!"), and thanked us for driving out to see them. It was an amazing night I will never forget.
Please check out this amazing musician. You will not be sorry.

    Is it truly possible to make a Christian Goth compilation? Well, apparently so, and small label Cold Fusion Music has done just that. They've done a pretty good job at it, too, but like most compilations there are plenty of misses to go along with the hits... Some of the groups here border on sounding a bit too alternative for my own personal tastes while other bands are just plain cheesy. But with that aside I fervently recommend 'Moonlight Cathedral' to fellow darklings seeking the taste of fresh blood... Now don't expect the atmosphere and beats to be uplifting or anything. The music is purely Goth with passionate rhythms and singing full of dark despair. The lyrics, however, are all about life, God, love and redemption.

    Granted there are many tracks here I could easily live without, I've unearthed some real hidden treasures on 'Moonlight Cathedral'. "Lead Us" by Fearful Symmetry is the perfect opener for a compilation such as this (it really sets the mood, bringing to mind old cathedrals, like the one on the cover, surrounded by ancient tombstones), and "Letter No. 4" by Undish is a gorgeous rock ballad with melodic guitars, lush string arrangements, and a spellbound singer that bares a resemblance to that of Lunascape's... Other highlights include "Vampyr" by Paradoxx and "Silence" by Creta (both tracks are divinely hypnotic and led by female vocalists). There's also a few better known artists like The Last Dance with "Whisper" and Lycia's Tara Vanaflower on the eerily bizarre "This Womb Like Liquid Honey", but the brightest finding for me would have to be "Martyr" by The Awakening. The guy's voice effortlessly goes from deeply brooding to seductively soaring and it is bone-chillingly BRILLIANT.

    Fittingly ending this uneven compilation is an anthem-like ballad that's melodramatic yet undeniably beautiful by Bowie-esque Savior Machine with "The End of the Age", making me think...despite its flaws this was money well spent.

    I give this a satisfyingly high 3 stars.

      This band is amazing. The singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist that leads the band (and plays practically everything on the albums) is Ashton Nyte, and he is awesome. His music is a mix of goth, rock, metal, industrial, electronica and darkwave. Like a mixture of Type O Negative, HIM, Marilyn Manson, David Bowie, Bauhaus and Depeche Mode, but completely better than any of them. He is a Christian, but he writes his songs about everything and in honest ways. I can't say enough about this guy.
      He is from South Africa and he is big there and in Europe and Germany, but as of yet hasn't made a dent in the US. He's made 9 albums and EPs under The Awakening and 3 "solo" albums under Ashton Nyte. I urge anyone who likes goth rock to get one of The Awakening's CDs... you won't be sorry.
