Despite their reputation as that rare techno artist who thinks in terms of albums, not singles, Work 1989-2002 makes it obvious that a retrospective like this from Orbital is well overdue. At one time, Orbital was one of the biggest, if not the biggest, names in techno, a result of their willingness to tour like a rock band and put on performances with light shows and improvised DJ work. Hence, tracks like "Halcyon and On and On" (from Orbital 2) and early ravers like "Chime" have so imprinted themselves on our collective techno memory that it seems odd they haven't been packaged together already. Still, as a definitive collection, Work is less than perfect. First off, the tracks here are relatively bland 7-inch versions of songs that have all been mixed to hell and back; "Nothing Left" from 1999's underrated Middle Of Nowhere should be a monstrous mix of swooping melodies and fat chords, not the tepid radio version used here. Surely, another four minutes of "Halcyon" or "The Box" (from In Sides) would be preferable to songs like "Illuminate" off last year's disappointing The Altogether. Similarly, it's a mystery why the record includes not the brilliant, original 1990 version of "Satan," but instead the inferior retread recorded with Metallica's Kirk Hammett for the Spawn soundtrack. But even though Work isn't perfect, it's tough to discount a record when at least half the tracks are classics of the genre. --Matthew Cooke

I'm gonna give it an "eh". .......2007-07-09
It's OK. That's about as good of a review as I can give this one. But then, Orbital isn't an easy band to make a "hits" CD of.
Orbitals Best of is a wonderful album.......2006-12-27
A great blend of Orbital songs from 1989 through 2002. Play at high volume and enjoy!
More misses than hits; strange track selection........2005-05-14
It really shouldn't be all that hard to compile the best of Orbital on one CD. The band recorded a number of transcendent, brilliant songs; at their best, they wrote divine melodies, sometimes euphoric, sometimes a bit moody, but always clean and beautiful. They also wrote a lot of filler around these moments of greatness; all of their albums are wildly inconsistent, at best, so it's pretty easy to discern and single out the good tracks. Here, I'll give you a tracklisting that I came up with just now off the top of my head: "Chime," "Belfast," "Lush 3-1," the live version of "Halcyon + On + On," "Forever," "The Girl With The Sun In Her Head," "Dwr Budr," "Otono," "Transient," and "One Perfect Sunrise." There, that's about eighty minutes of prime Orbital. I'm not saying this is the only possible tracklisting or anything, but it does cover the best parts of their career.
You'll notice that this CD does cover four of my picks. However, two of them are presented only as drastically shortened single edits. This is especially bad in the case of "Halcyon + On + On," which gets reduced from ten minutes to four here; the full version of this track takes two minutes just to get started, and the single edit lacks its entrancingly carefree feel. Nor does the abridged version compare to the explosive, insane joy of the live rendition, which adds samples not found in the original. So, unfortunately, Orbital's signature tune gets short shrift on this CD.
It gets worse. The band's over-ambitious 1993 album Snivilisation is represented only by the single edit of "Are We Here?" when the dramatic, starry-eyed lilt of "Forever" (all eight minutes) is the blindingly obvious choice. Similarly, In Sides is reduced to a short version of "The Box," even though "The Girl With The Sun In Her Head" (or at least the slow introduction to that track) is probably the most beautiful piece of music ever written by the band. One can understand why these tracks didn't make the compilation: these two albums are full of very long, slow, cinematic pieces, which aren't well-suited to single edits, dancefloor fodder, or radio play, and thus wouldn't make for a very popular greatest-hits package. Yet that sort of music was precisely what Orbital was best at, and it's impossible to come up with a good compilation that doesn't showcase it.
The long songs are cut down to allow more tracks to be included on the CD, or, more accurately, to make room for some latter-day tracks from The Altogether, about which the less said the better. Consequently, the best stuff is nearly unrecognizable ("Satan" was a popular track from the band's first album, but this CD only includes the rock version taken from the Spawn soundtrack), and the CD is weighed down by weaker tracks. To make up for this, the CD inexplicably includes the full, eleven-minute version of "Impact USA" (a reworking of "Impact" that is available on the Diversions EP). This track was a low point of its original album; it's got a little bit of melody and a whole lot of brass instruments blowing off-key single notes, obnoxiously goofy samples ("It's...it's...it's like...a cry! A cry...for...survival! For their survival...and for our survival!"), and pounding drum monotony. This more dissonant version is even more pointless. Why not shorten this track, if it was necessary to include it in the first place, and stretch out a better track to its full version?
It's not all bad. "Belfast" and "Lush 3-1" are still here in their unedited glory; the latter of these two still has all of its surging power, and is surely among the greatest pop songs ever written. Aside from that, however, this compilation does Orbital a disservice. And it doesn't even cover their whole career, because it was released before the band's last album. It's too bad, because if ever there was a band that needed a good solid best-of CD, it's Orbital. This CD isn't it, though.
Brilliant start.......2005-04-29
I agree with all the reviewers bellow I found this CD to be an excellent introduction of Orbital's work. In 90's I was really very keen on this kind of electronic music made by Orbital, however I saw the film called Human Traffic where a track "Belfast" is situated just right at the end of the furious trip of the "heroes" in the film...immediatelly I heard the song I tried to look it up at the Internet what the hell was that :-). Today I might say that I unfortunatelly missed the years with Orbital but you can easilly get a feeling of it after purchasing this record... believe me, it worth of it!!!
Good starter.......2004-07-01
Basically, this is a good cd to get if your new to Orbital as it samples most of the singles on their other albums, but don't stop with this album.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2005-08-13
I am really impressed with this chillout compilation. I tend to be really picky and hard to please when it comes to chillout music. The compilations in general contain the same songs and offer nothing really distinctive for me. Not in this case however. It's a different sounding chillout album to me. It's the perfect thing to pop in after a hard day at work which was stressful, or just before bed to wind down. Artists include Zero 7, iio, Jean Jacques Smoothie, Radiohead, Chemical Brothers, Faithless, St. Germain and more. Check it out! A must have in any music collection.
My Favorite MOS Chillout CD Set.......2004-05-31
I really like the MOS chillout CD's a lot and listen to them all the time, but this is the one I like the best. The track selection is excellent and the mixing is pretty nice as well. I can comfortably give this a very high recommendation. I am hoping they will come out with another set soon.
well done, once again.......2002-08-15
the third compilation proves again that the ministry of sound is a standard-setting label for chillout. it makes a step forward in terms of creatity and introduces a jazzy side. this feature makes the compilation quite original and eclectic. tracks like the soulside mix of iio's rapture (one of my all-time favorites), lux, weekend players, st germain, jack-jaques smoothie and the past present organization are just the perfect selection. jon hopkins's lost in thought is almost heavenly. if you want to relax, or maybe enjoy a night with somebody, this session is a very good choice.
Another Stellar Collection from Ministry of Sound.......2002-07-24
The folks at Ministry of Sound, whoever they may be, are a bunch of very smart people. They've assembled some of the very best compilations I've purchased, and they're worth every dime of their import price tags. Having already bought a few chillout albums, I wasn't sure if MoS would continue their winning streak. Sho 'nuff, they did. "The Chillout Annual 2002" almost blows away the "Ultra Chilled 01" collection right out of the water. On this double CD, we get rare and exciting laid back grooves; if you work in a high stress job during the day, this CD will help you calm your nerves when you get home. As with most chillout albums, we get appearances from Zero 7, Saint Germain, and Groove Armama, and they are all well-represented with some really good cuts. But the group that interests me the most is this band called Royksopp, who deliver this intriguing track called "So Easy." Bouncy and infectious, it's a great song from a group that deserves to be billed as The Next Big Thing. If you're into chillout compilations, you simply have to get this. It's a first-rate MoS effort that will make a welcome addition to your collection.
Indispensable set for a bedroom and sleepy sunday mornings.......2002-03-24
A must have set on every cd-deck. This is not something that you take off your cd player, specially the first cd. Contains the usual beautifully mixed 19 to 20 tracks, 3 min max for each song, the MOS mixing way, so you don't get bored so quickly and you can have a quick tour sur le cream de la musique. One of the best songs is "In the waiting Line" from "Zero 7" which is the best medicine to relax after a stressful day or browse on that "Saint Germain" song that has a perfect rhythm and you might even think that you are listening to a "Cafe Del Mar" album with the "Afterlife" track. So, if you have a bedroom, a cd-player and a life... own this!

Somewhere between synthpop and electro.......2006-08-04
If you are more interested in listening to music that sounds like it was made by robots playing keyboards than by humans playing guitars, this album is for you. Unlike some other electroclash-esque compilation that feature modern rock bands flirting with 80's style melodies and synth sounds, this stuff is strictly synth driven. Although this album isn't vocal heavy, it does vear towards standard pop music sound structure rather than towards standard dance-music structure.
Some of the artists on this compilation have made some very electro tracks that are not really accessible to the masses. However, the particular tracks chosen on this compilation are shifted more towards the synthpop than the electro end of the spectrum. These tracks tend to be more fun, shimmery, glossy, & beautiful than gritty, dirty, or funky (if that makes any sense).
If you like Solvent, I expect you would like this, if you liked the music on the Electricity 1 and II compilations you should like this.
If you want really lo-fi analog electro, this is not for you (try Anthony Rother or This is not the 80s). If you want complex and sophisticated beats this is not for you (try Autechre). If you want a disc full of Euro dance floor bangers this is also not for you (try Euromix cds from Tony Romano).
Anyhow, I find this album to be a collection of some great, timeless synthpop that (alas) will never get near the radio.
dancetastic.......2004-10-12
this compilation came out when the electroclash scene was peaking, but the quality here hovers way above anything else that genre has to offer. Ghostly got some of the best electronic artists from around the world to create tracks inspired by the robot-disco sound pioneered by Giorgio Moroder (producer for Donna Summer among others).best inlcusions:
Adult.- they offer their poppiest song ever here
Daniel Wang- lovely melody and production
Solvent- his first song with vocals, i think
Legowelt- this track reminds me of the snow level in Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Mat-101- lots of cool production effects
the only disappointment is the song from Susumu Yokota, which is basically an uncredited cover of Donna Summer's 'i feel love', but not very interesting. he's done way better. although this record is a compilation, it has a very cohesive feel overall. very upbeat, slick, and fun.

Customer Reviews:
An overview of the Pop Ambient Series...........2007-05-30
The label "Kompakt" label has been long since well known for it's output of Electronica/Techno, decided in the latter-half of 2000 to release a compilation that showcase not only the broad range of artists on the label (with a few artists licensed to appear on some volumes) , but a chance to compile some of the more subdued, delicate, restrained & intimate nature of the featured artists work. In this case "Ambient techno" with a decidedly accessible and unassuming slant (hence the "Pop Ambient" tag). Following the success of the release of the first "Ambient 2001" edition, every successive year has seen a new release (the most recent volume being "Pop Ambient 2007).
For any preconception of harsh, thumping, or even groove based music when the term "Ambient Techno" is used to describe the general overall genre of these volumes, you have to bear in mind. What each Pop Ambient series deals almost exclusively in, is that tracks don't concern themselves hard edged beats, or driving percussion, and reverberating basslines. And instead focus more, on directionless modal harmonies, and emphasizing densely layered, highly nuanced, and meticulously arranged ambient soundscapes. Which can on one track veers more towards soft gentle swirling synth tones and glistening piano-like melodies, and another track can feature a pastoral guitar strum, with looped piano chords and a sublime mix of bouncy rhythm, and light soundscapes. And other tracks can be dreamy glitch-lite tracks, with the sort of atmospheric drone-like twinkly/crackly shadings, full of radiant, gorgeously low-lit sound. And then have the following track deal an unhurried minimal percussion, working well alongside ethereal, woozy synths
.
Pop Ambient compilations seem to take in a multitude of influences..ranging from: Dub/ Ambient / Techno / Electronica / Glitch/ Electro-house & Soundscape music are all touched upon, explored and interpreted, crossed-referenced in a way that the sound & textures are absolutely compelling, yet the simplicity of the arrangements give this it `Pop' feel. It's not an series of compilations that is there to immediately impress, as it's far too considered and delicate in its approach to have an immediate effect. The spare twinkles of guitar and humming drones, and minimal undulating bass certainly wont have your friends begging you to sell your copy, but taken on it's own terms, and listened to without outside interruption, it's a series of albums that eventually win you over with a vast array of soft thrums, subtle rhythmic structures, meditative pieces, or melodic simple softly fading distant tunes, poignant moods and fractured sounds that skilfully blend deep, granular sound design, with the 4-bar rhythmic intensity, mixed with spare late-night introspective sound of diverting vamps, working alongside tracks which feature nearly imperceptible sparse polyrhythms, in a way that relax in a totally disconcerting manner.
The revolving door approach to each of the releases, ensures that although there is a certain musical aesthetic that each edition of these compilation works and adheres to. The rotation of different artists does give the series new material to work with (although some artist works, do feature throughout the series). I have all the volumes in the series so far (2001 - 2007), and I do find that they're all relatively similar in a lot of aspects, and thus relatively interchangeable. And everyone will probably have their favourite volumes (although a lot of people consider volumes 2002 / 2003 to be the finest volumes), you could probably pick up any one in the series, and have a relatively reasonable idea of what to expect from the other volumes. And for those with a passing interest in this series, then there's probably no way that you really need to buy all volumes...but for me personally, each volume works so beautifully in a downtempo and chilled environment, that for me....I found that each volume worked perfectly for late-nights at home, when the music needs to be low, or just when you fancy listening to something electronic/electronica, but without any driving progression, and just something that locks you into a particular mindset (solitude, introspection, reading, working on the computer, etc...) but I found that the sophisticated, yet relaxed music worked so for well for me, that I ended up grabbing each volume, and never regretting each purchase.
This is probably not something I'd recommend to every one, as there'll be those that are expecting something eclectic, and progressive, and maybe even something that musically takes them places...and those people will be disappointed, with this purchase. Also, there will be some like ambient music, but find the whole exercise (primarily because of the "Pop" tag), a little too accessible and electronic-influenced to really engage. That's fine!!, as this was probably never complied with you in mind. Admittedly this is a series of volumes that takes you nowhere fast.....'But wasn't that the point of Downtempo/Chillout music in the first place??'.
