    Album Description

Recorded by Glenn Brown and Patrick Boyer in the winter of 2000, Children Take Your Shoes Off showcases the diversity of the band with 13 tracks ranging from 10 minute improvisational jams and hard driving bluegrass pickin' tunes to quiet waltzes and traditional folk tunes. The debut album mixes live shows with studio tracks and features special guests from local bands such as The Lash, Half Looking, The Weepers, Pub Domain and Grand Rapids Slim and the Murph-tones.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2005-12-01

This is a great cd from a great band. The kind of music that is hard to find today. Loved it.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing........2003-07-30

This is one of the best, if not the best albums released by a relatively unknown band. The live recording sounds nearly perfect and the tracks are varied enough to appeal to almost anyone. Track 4, 'Stagnationland' is an amazing song, as is 'Chained to Another Day.' Anyone who is a fan of Dispatch or Rusted Root should definitely give this a listen.

4 out of 5 stars love this band.......2003-04-14

I think this band is great. A hard driving band with great songs. This cd has a good variety of music styles which is what they seemed to want. My favorite songs are "aching bones, worried mind" and "Kate, if you're listening". I highly recommend to catch the band live to really hear what great musicians they really are.

3 out of 5 stars good tunes from good guys.......2002-08-24

The music from Steppin' In It's album, Children Take Your Shoes Off, embraces a variety of different sounds including blue grass, a little Irish flair, and some Jamaican beach music. A great cd to listen to to relax and an excellent beat in the car. Personal favorites of mine "Kate, If You're Listening" & "Plenty", capture what I think is the bands essence, exceptional vernacular put to phenomenal music.

4 out of 5 stars New versions ... unlike the originals.......2004-02-21

Made in UK in 2002, Serial# CRP-0951, Playing Time 62:26

This 12-track album features the duo of John Lawton (of URIAH HEEP fame) on vocals and Steve Dunning on (generally) acoustic guitar, with added contributions of drums on most tracks, and Phil Lanzon (URIAH HEEP fans will recognize the name!) on keyboards.

The bulk of the songs presented here are in the "unplugged" format, and have been taken from the repertoire of John Lawton's earlier career: "Feelings", "Been Hurt", "Firefly", "Come Back To Me", "Rain", "Wise Man", "I'm Alive" all from the URIAH HEEP stable, but given a new treatment not just acoustically, but with significantly different and often interesting arrangements. We're even treated to an old LUCIFER FRIEND's song, "Burning Ships".

John Lawton's voice sounds as good today as it did back then, but this nostalgic venture is perhaps a little too soft; the new arrangements to melodies that were originally softer (like "Wise Man", "Rain" and "Come Back To Me") seem more appealing than the attempts at softening some tracks like "I'm Alive" (which is one of my faves on "Fallen Angel"), because the contrast is perhaps too drastic... especially considering how rich and full the textures were on the originals.

Still, it's a daring effort, and the CD should find its way in the collection of any John Lawton afficionado!

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic Rock Garden of Eden.......2004-12-07

John Lawton is a master musician. Equal parts, gifted singer/songwriter and interpretter of other people's material, John strikes gold in this latest effort with Steve Dunning. Dunning is a bassist, guitarist, and songwriter who proves to be the perfect foil for John Lawton on this disc. This is not lightweight or irrelevant, but instead smooth and upbeat with amazing vocals provided by the gifted Mr. Lawton. There are 12 perfectly selected and performed tracks on offer here, no filler. There are cover songs from John's days with Uriah Heep such as my favorite track Feelings. Also of note are Still paying my Dues to the Blues, I'm Alive, and Tonight. Every track on offer is proof of Dunning's chops as a musician and Lawton's mastery as a singer/bandleader. Another hidden masterpiece from John Lawton, give it a chance and you will be VERY much rewarded!!!
