With The Vanity Project Barenaked Ladies' co-founder Steven Page makes a noble attempt to disassociate himself from the word "cheeky," and almost manages to pull it off. Where it works, it works spectacularly. The first single "That's All, That's All" showcases his unmistakably boffo voice with a snappy Beatlesque tune, resisting triteness by way of graceful, lovelorn lyrics. "Wilted Rose" returns him to his native Canada in several verses for some sharp-witted political commentary that sits well with his straightforward, intelligent delivery. "So Cal" sends us back to good `ole classic-pop school where Phil Spector and Brian Wilson preside behind the lectern. Binding these songs is an honest, cameras-off stab at introspection. You can credit collaborator Stephen Duffy, who co-wrote 11 of the 12 songs, with steering the lyrics in a likeably intimate direction. And credit Page himself for recognizing the time has come to redirect his considerable skills into music more mature and substantial. Barenaked Ladies may be endlessly appealing, but they too have their limits. --Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
THE VANITY PROJECT is a self-titled album of twelve songs from Barenaked Ladies lead singer and co-founder, Steven Page. The album also spotlights Page's frequent co-writing partner and musical accomplice, Stephen Duffy (Tin Tin, The Lilac Time.) Eleven of the twelve songs are Page-Duffy compositions, and the twelfth (So. Cal) is written solely by Steven Page. While the distinctive lead vocals of Page can be heard on all twelve tracks, the music was performed by both Page and Duffy with occasional guest appearances from friends (BNL's Kevin Hearn) and family (Page's brother, Matthew, and wife, Carolyn.)
Customer Reviews:
I feel of the older BNL.......2007-01-17
This solo CD of Stephen Page's was a great buy for me. I found the music to be reminiscent of the older BNL style music (early 1990's). Well done, there are no skip overs on this CD.
A Must Buy.......2006-08-07
If you are a fan of the "Barenaked Ladies" then you must buy this Album!
Big BNL fans will probably enjoy but might not be for everyone.......2006-04-29
This album, a solo project from the Barenaked Ladies' Steven Page, has some things in common with BNL and some things that set it apart. You'll immediately recognize the clever and sardonic lyrics (from "Wilted Rose"-'I almost cried on the day my country died/I almost tried to care..'), the juxtaposition of bright, major key melodies and melancholy lyrics, and of course Page's unmistakable voice. What's different is this album is shorter on the instantly catchy pop you'll often get on a BNL CD: only "Baby Loves the Radio" forces you to singalong on first listen.
HIGHLIGHTS:
"These Wasted Words" paints a portrait of a couple grimly determined to "stick it out" when the relationship's spark is long burned out. ("If we never make love again/Will you still want to call out my name?/There's nothing left to explain/When we admit that there's no one to blame") Dylan-ish wailing harmonica announces another disintegrating-couple-ballad in "Thank You for Sharing" ("Thank you for sharing your nightmares with me/Thank you for choosing to leave peacefully/Thank you for losing your last shred of dignity..") "Baby Loves the Radio" is probably the most 'commercial' track here as Page bites the hand that feeds him. In this one, he's expressing annoyance at his omnipresence on the airwaves. ("This song's in heavy rotation/On every radio station/Across this whole wide nation/I'm beginning to lose my patience" "By the Roadside" is an uncharacteristically dark number from Page, documenting a loved one's suicide.
LOWS:
"Here Today and Yesterday" feels a bit limp. It just doesn't really come alive for me.
BOTTOM LINE:
If you own all the BNL albums, this will probably tide you over until the next one, though I can't say it equals the best work of the group. It simply doesn't have enough sterling moments to rise above the generally "pleasant" feel. Perhaps it will grow on me more over time, but I can only call it "OK" for now.
Gotta let it grow on you.......2006-01-17
First of all, this isn't a Barenaked Ladies album. You have to know that when you get it. (Although you probably haven't heard of this if you don't like Barenaked Ladies).
The first time through this cd I noticed a few catchy tunes and a few songs that I thought I'd never get to like, but each time I listen to it again I like it more. So, don't give up after the first listen, or you'll be missing some great music.
Glitterbug is, in my opinion, the best song on the album. Short, clear and super-sweet, with some beautifully simple music.
The fact that this album exists at all makes me wonder what's wrong with these songs that the Barenaked Ladies didn't want to use them, because the feel of most of the music and lyrics is the same. Maybe Stephen Page felt these were more personal somehow, or maybe the rest of the band didn't like them. Whatever the reason, it's worth picking up the cd while we're waiting for another Barenaked Ladies cd to come out.
Good Stuff.......2005-10-09
I'm a big Barenaked Ladies fan, so I had to check out this CD. It's a very interesting CD and you have to listen to it a few times before it really grows on you. A great addition to my collection.

Superb!.......2005-06-23
Picked up The Vanity Project on the day of release. Absolutely fantastic! Each song is full of emotion, and one truly gets the impression that Page really has put a lot of thought into his songs. One of my favourite tracks thus far would have to be "Wilted Rose." This song involves Pierre Trudeau, and naturally, of course, goes straight to my heart, hehe. This album is a must-have!

Album Description
We are all full of it at one time or another. Or at least that's the way dMg sees it from his porcelain throne. If music is therapeutic then dMg is like a psychiatric session set to music. His Charma Recordz debut Obnoxious Vanity Project is a concoction of revolutionary Hip Hop with a dose of Rock and Roll angst and a splash of Techno. Born in New York, dMg was spawned from an emcee that became frustrated with his life and the politics of the music business. He's been a founding member of three Hip Hop groups (Nasty Boyz, Cesspull and a Hip Hop influenced Rock group Alice Kramden). All of which disbanded prior to any real success. dMg took some time off to deal with his issues (poverty & parenthood) and has crawled out of his obscurity to gain his title as the "Conscious Clown Prince of Hip Hop." He teamed up with super producer (some beg to differ) Taquan at 12 Rounds of Music and prepared a diabolically honest sonic journey into the bowels of his soul. He has been compared to Gil Scott Heron, Chuck D, Guru and Q-Tip. However, he aligns himself with his favorite's OL' Dirty and Angelo Moore of Fishbone. If you are the type that appreciates the D.I.Y ethic of some of the greatest renaissance artists (M.F. Doom, MC Paul Barman, Jedi Mind Tricks, Cannibal Ox and others) you will hail this divergent force in music.

THE FUTURE OF HIP HOP HAS GONE TO THE TOILET........2003-08-10
dungMeistergeneRal is the most poignant emcee I've heard in a long time. I borrowed this CD from my boyfriend and have since paid him for it. The lyrics are blazing hot and the tracks are unlike anything being forced on us by mainstream.Hip-Hop/Rock/Techno???? My favorites are "Worshipful Master" some old evil empire emcee stuff. "I'm all that & your not" Hip hop lounge lizard. "Unresolved childhood issues" child abuse and cartoons."Handsome like a monkey" & "T.E.O.T.W.A.W.K.I" are instant classics. Me and my man both have copies now but I almost know all the words. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who loves when artist push the envelope.
