METACONCIENCIA is a Mexican band that has been working together since 1996, and whose first album "Bestiario" (2003) is more than impressive. A rhythm section and two guitarists (With Ricardo MORENO also playing a few keyboards parts) perform a colourful and warm instrumental rock with multiple influences: Seventies Progressive rock (KING CRIMSON, THE DIXIE DREGS, GENESIS, YES...), jazz-rock, Mexican music... Their melodic and daring music, both in the acoustic and in the furious moments, shows some virtuoso musicians that are quite rigorous in their musical compositions. As convincing in the quiet moments as in distortion and tension, this band is no doubt about it a future giant of the Progressive rock scene !

METACONCIENCIA is a Mexican band that has been working together since 1996, and whose first album "Bestiario" (2003) is more than impressive. Improvisation, virtuosism and great inspiration... and my review could finish right here. "Bestiario" is the first Metaconciencia album even if they started back in 1996. This mexican band is mainly influenced by King Crimson and Flower King's music (who played live with as supportin act) but they're from Mexico and so they brought the warmness, the wonderful colours and tradition of their beautiful country into music. "Garghi" let us immediately understand it won't be an easy listening: the immense guitar playing of Ricardo Moreno and Francisco Estrada (yes two guitar players). Usually I don't like music ruled by exasperate technicisms, but don't worry it's not the case of Metaconciencia. Each song is complex and sometimes hard to swallow but always ruled by a good and enjoyable melody. I liked very much songs like "Alh 84" and "Paradigma" (absolutely my favourite and close to Artsruni music). In the last three songs, the title-track, "1899" and "Antarctica" (wonderful ending part) they reached the closest point to Flower's kings, too hard and complex for me. Anyway, "Bestiario" is one of my 2003 favourite albums and deserves my high recommendation.

This record features 13th century vocal and instrumental pieces from Codex Las Huelgas and from a manuscript belonging to the Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid. The selection was due mainly to the content of the texts: all mention animals that have acquired symbolic value as representing religious characters and ideas. However, animal metaphors are many times only a lateral feature of the texts (cf track 1).
One might describe it as a "separated" record: men and women don't sing together, and instruments and voice meet only in track 15, which is also the only piece not sung in Latin. But this is not a reproach; the singing is as good as one would expect of ALIA MVSICA. My personal feeling is that the pieces sung by women show skill; those sung by men, strength.
Finally, the liner notes are excellent concerning the explanation of animal symbolism, but say little or nothing of the music performed; regardless this little flaw, it is a 5-star record, to be sure: it has ALIA MVSICA quality; it has Harmonia Mundi quality.
