Customer Reviews:
Why tell this story? It's a good story, with better music!.......2007-03-11
There is nothing worse than a weak story linked together with weaker tunes. However, Once on this Island is operatic in its beauty, organic in its execution (not a note out of place!) and is bound together with a strong story, stronger performances, and some of the most upbeat and uplifting music I have ever heard. The music brings you to the Antilles and establishes the place of this island, with its symbitioc relationship with nature and its gods. And you will root for Ti Moune and her faith in her place in the world, and even though she doesn't get the guy, it could be argued that she gets something even better.
Give it a listen....
BROADWAY.......2006-05-14
My schools 8th grade play was Once On This Island and I loved it so i'm gonna buy this cd! you should too!
Very Authenic and Beautiful Work.......2006-04-25
The team of Flaherty and Ahrens truly blew me away with "Ragtime", and I didn't anything could come close to that power. While "Once On This Island" is nothing like "Ragtime" in terms of gandeur, it still is a wonderful work filled with some wonderful music. The ensemble on this recording sounds exactly as they should in my opinion, and they perfectly depict people on a magical island. The story is also one that I enjoyed in that it was very simple, yet had a great message. While the vocal work provided by the ensemble is great, it is LaChanze who truly makes this recording soar. Her voice is like that of a goddess, and she makes all of the emotions of Ti Moune come alive, especially in "Waiting For Life", which is this recording's star number.
It may not be big, bold, or grand, but "Once On This Island" is a magical recording of a magical little musical that proves to be quite effective. It's authenticty and clever musicality are what make it great.
Stunning and flawless Musical Fairy Tale .......2006-04-08
This musical represents all that is RIGHT with new musicals. Flaherty creates musical themes that recur throughout the piece and Ahrens' lyrics are brilliant. Through this musical, which I saw in NY 7 times, I was introduced to the talent of La Chanze and now as the lead in Color Purple, the world is getting another glimpse at what a great singer she is. Listening to her interpret a song is beautiful. For those who never had the privilege of seeing the show, we can all thank our stars that the production lives on forever in recording. Many other notable performers from Milton Craig Nealy (Rain) to Kecia Lewis Evans (Mama Will Provide) to Jerry Dixon (Some Girls)to Eric Riley (in every stand out number), this cast recording is worth every penny. I am on my 2nd copy and rapidly working toward my 3rd.
superb musical.......2006-01-29

The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Three Cheers for the Irish!!!.......2007-05-30
A glorious concert in a historic setting, with all involved in top notch form. Finbar finds a great old Johnny Cash number, Ronan sings a Glocka
Mora to end all, and Anthony Kearns sings murderously difficult versions
of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.
With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.
Ellis Island song brings tears to my eyes.......2006-03-17
This magical album crosses oceans and centuries and puts me in touch with my Irish ancestry. The title song tells a story similar to my greatgrandmother's and even though I've heard it many times now, I still weep for her.
How Are Things In Glocca Morra?.......2004-04-16
Long a fan of Irish music, I have turned to a series of artists to satiate my appetite. Bing Crosby and John McCormick have been succeeded by the Irish Tenors.
This CD has a bit more of an Irish American theme as "Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" and "God Bless America" illustrate. Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"
The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!

I think this is best CD since Live in Belfast! it also has 2 songs not included on the video! it's a unique album of how the immigration to Ellis Island and New York turned out. It also has songs of the war such as The Green Fields Of France (The Best One) or, the croppy boy. I would recommend this to anyone!

Ellis Island - A Fine Balance of Art and Accessibility.......2007-05-15
Finding the balance between art and its initial accessibility to an intended audience can be one of the greatest challenges facing the contemporary composer. Too much art, and new music loses the competition for the listener's ear to the great composers of history. Too little art, and new music begins to sound shallow after a few listenings. Peter Boyer's "Ellis Island" is both accessible and deep, deep enough to listen to again and again. For we who are Americans, "Ellis Island" even carries us beyond the art of music and inspires us to remember what has historically made America great.
"Ellis Island" creatively uses the narratives of seven people who came to America through the immigration station at Ellis Island as a general structure for its large form and its initial accessibility. Distinguished actors such as Academy Award winner Olympia Dukakis, and Tony Award winner Barry Bostwick capably personify the narratives. Combined with multi-media pictures when performed live, "Ellis Island" is gaining momentum and popularity by being programmed by increasing numbers of orchestras across America.
Boyer's themes are memorable, even singable. Because the subject of this work is part of American history, the orchestral colors are appropriately reminiscent of Aaron Copland's "American" works. Like a great film score, "Ellis Island" gives a theme to each of its colorful, narrated characters and then combines them all into one highly enjoyable, even inspiring symphonic work.
21st Century Composer Presents Another Outstanding Offering in "Ellis Island" .......2006-02-07
Extensive play of Peter Boyer's earlier recording "The Music of Peter Boyer" (which unfortunately is now out of print) by our local classical music station prompted my orginal and on going interest in this music from a gifted young composer. "Ellis Island" offers the listener a stunning and varied music mix and textures in various classical forms and formats to meet and enhance the context of the different narrations much in the way a musical score enhances and magnifies the story quality and emotion felt with the soundtrack of a movie or musical. While the use of accompanying narration or story telling is not new to the genre this particular piece has a truely American quality that those of us with any knowledge of our immigrant roots can relate. One can relate in one way or another to almost all the stories.
This recording fits nicely with other NAXOS recording in this series. Music that is sometimes not often heard or recorded or may be new, but is none the less worthy of our attention and that of others because it is that good.
Mr. Boyer falls into the catagory of other 21st century composers I find myself listening to-Joseph Curiale, Michael Torke, John Adams and others-who are carrying on the traditons of giants of the 20th century-Copeland, Elmer Bernstein, Leonard Bernstein and others-and taking this rich traditon of music to the next level and beyond. After "Ellis Island" I am anxiously looking forward to Mr. Boyer's next compositions and recording.
Inspiring piece of music and history.......2005-10-04
Perhaps I am a sucker for anything about Ellis Island since both my parents came to this country through Ellis Island. Be that as it may, I thorougly enjoyed the spoken stories of immigrants and the musical interludes (which reminded me of Aaron Copland). The music moved me and I thought the mix of music and spoken sections was very effective. I recommend it.
Ellis Island brought tears to my eyes, loved it!.......2005-08-03
I really enjoyed the music and readings. Bought extra so I could use them as gifts.
Great Idea - Mediocre Realization.......2005-07-29
I would really give this 3 1/2 stars. This is a good idea and the stories are varied and moving. The musical realization is well orchestrated but not very original. Boyer is an innovative orchestrator and has a formidable bag of tricks. Being familiar with some of his other music such as Ghosts of Troy, I would say that this music is a step down. He seems to be trying too hard to create something important. The opening theme is rather generic and seems to be channeling a combination of Aaron Copland and Jerry Goldsmith. In one of the interludes, there is a very "Twilight Zone" flavor created with marimba and piano (I could be wrong about the instruments here). He has used some of the same orchestral effects here that he used in Titanic to create the feeling of oceanic distress.
I would have thought Boyer would use this opportunity to create some interesting orchestral music combined with traditional ethnic elements native to the various cultures represented, and also to reflect distinctly American music that was present at the turn of the 20th century. He did this somewhat with the "Tin Pan Alley" interlude, but this was rather cliche.
For what I believe is a more successful and moving realization of somewhat the same time period and subject matter, check out Charles Strouse's score to the musical "Rags".

This Nashville band may have lifted its name from the lyrics of a Led Zeppelin song but listeners expecting nine-minute guitar epics about medieval orgies and fiery demons are bound to be disappointed. Blue Merle favors a lighter touch, as sketched out on the wistful title track of its debut album, Burning In The Sun. The jangly song evokes the Dave Matthews Band with its lilting fiddles and spiraling rhythms, while singer-songwriter Luke Reynolds sounds like a dead ringer for Coldplay's Chris Martin. Having played Bonnaroo, toured with Donovan Frankenreiter and recoded with Matthews producer Stephen Haris, the band seems destined to find a home with the Relix crowd. It would be a shame if it settled there. Rich, emotionally detailed songs like "If I Could" and "Stay" not only transcend genres, they're capable of changing lives. -- Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
perfect instrumentation and singing.......2007-06-04
two years ago I went to a dave matthews band concert at the nissan pavilion in virginia. I didnt expect to hear such amazing talent before dave even came on.. it was blue merle, they were fantastic! the night I left there I drove to a walmart super center and bought their cd.. Since then I can say out of all my cds I have listened to theirs the most. they are a fantastic band, its a shame they had to break up
Excellent debut (and swan song).......2006-12-30
I was very disappointed to see that Blue Merle broke up as I really enjoy listening to all of the tracks on this most excellent debut. If you like, Cold Play, Keane, Vertical Horizon and the like, you will not be disappointed with Blue Merle.
One or possibly two songs are good.......2006-10-06
Because I like faster music with a beat that makes me tap a foot, I only liked the cut "Lucky To Know You." "Seeing Through You" is all right, too. Perhaps Reynolds will independently release a CD of his own with more songs like "Lucky To Know You."
Great album, so long Blue Merle.......2006-06-30
I saw these guys live twice and they put on a great show. The album is very impressive as well. The bad news is that they are no longer. A message on thier website said they broke up to follow different paths. So this album is a one of kind find, worth the price if you like crossover pop/ bluegrass kind of feel. It makes you want to drive out through open spaces. Good stuff.
Spare me the Coldplay comparisons!.......2006-01-05
I've only one thing to say to all of the squidgedy morons who bemoan that "they ripped off Coldplay". CLEAN THE WAX OUT OF YOUR EARS!
Sure you can compare the sound of Luke's voice to Chris Martin's but, that's where it ends. The vocal style is not the same and the songs are not even close to being similar. Blue Merle has roots in rock, country, and bluegrass. The only bluegrass COLDPLAY ever saw was on a trip to Denmark.
If you folks making the Coldplay comparison knew half as much as you think you do about music you still couldn't fill a thimble.
This is a great CD of songs that I'll be enjoying for sometime.

Album Description
Ellis Island Sound started life as a duo consisting of multi-instrumentalists Peter Astor (The Weather Prophets, The Loft) and David Sheppard, gentlemen adventurers in sound since 1997. Recorded in a tiny, deconsecrated chapel in the sleepy Waveney Valley on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, the album features 20 brand new songs. Using acoustic instruments that range from parlour guitars and ukuleles to pump harmoniums, dulcimers, goat skin drums and washboards, and recorded on an antediluvian 8-track tape recorder, it's EIS stripped down to their analogue fundaments. That said, Pete and David also deploy a stylophone, a Casio mini-sampler, a Bentley Rhythm Ace drum machine and miscellaneous noise making devices. Their friend Josh Hillman (from the Willard Grant Conspiracy) helps out, lending violin, viola and pedal steel. Peacefrog. 2007.

Customer Reviews:
aural bubblewrap.......2002-10-22
Ellis Island Sound the band is Pete Astor and David Sheppard. Ellis Island Sound the album is dance music with the edges rounded off, hazy instrumental mellotronica with a simple formula explored over eleven pieces; lightly "jam" in the studio with live drums and keyboards, post some tape loops and minimal guitar strains - voila! Instant Ibiza success. Occasionally rising to midtempo ("Olympic 2020") or dropping some slight funk, as in the handclaps of "Cyanide," even some seagull caws and jaunty xylophone for variety ("Your Twisted Sister") you still can't escape the feeling that they're one ingredient shy - the hook - from pristine chill pop. Think pastel Fila Brazilla reinterpreting Blue States for reference. So yes, it's a tad soft, and couldn't be safer if encased in bubblewrap; still beats 75% of those chillout compilations out there.

Album Description
This exclusive compilation of songs, recorded mainly in the 1940's, represents the diversity of American popular music during three major decades of Ellis Island's operation, 1900-1930. Presented in chronological order, titles representing the immigrant diversity include American standards by famous American composers such as Irving Berlin, who also passed through Ellis Island's gates. Symbolic of the styles of the day, this compilation includes all genres of American music including ragtime, barbershop quartet and jazz and features vintage recordings of some of the most outstanding American artists of all time, such as historical big band leader Tommy Dorsey and the legendary "Velvet Fog," Mel Torme.
Customer Reviews:
Ellis Island Music review.......2006-03-28
My wife and I just visited Ellis Island for the first time March 25, 2006 a moving and beautiful experience. Listen to this CD and get in the mood for the immigrant experience. This is a great variety of music all good productions and great listening experience. If you are new to this era Freedom's Front Door will introduce you to great groups and great songs. I rated 5 stars not just for the music but the idea behind the music.
