5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs.......2006-09-03

I've owned at least four copies of this cd. People borrow them and ... you know the rest. Musically great, sonically excellent, I still listen to it often today. Brilliantly walks the line between accessible and challenging listening.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best choices in 1994!.......2005-03-09

There are times in which the intuition, the joyous rapture and the inspiration seemed to melt in the right proportions to make an unforgettable record. In the jazz story there are many examples.
But in the particular case in what it concerns the Brecker Brothers made to my mind their best achievement, without any shadow of doubt. Fascinating, exciting and captivating in every track. There is not any hole all along this work.

Simply extraordinary and consider this title among the cream of the cream albums during that year.

5 out of 5 stars This album is amazing.......2003-02-24

I have had this album for many years now. I am only a junior in college, however I'm in music school - I have just recently dug deeper into this album after learning more here. The stuff Michael and Randy play are just heart-stopping. Rediculous. Michael's lines are so out and crazy, yet beautiful. They keep you listening on the edge of your seat. Randy's playing on this album is quite the opposite - its warm and mellow. He pours his heart out through his horn. The mixture of these two with the outstanding arrangments of great song ideas are indispensable. This album is a staple in a musician's listening and learning experience. All other audiences will also be in shock as they listen to what Michael and Randy say musically.

5 out of 5 stars The Breckers don't get any better.......2002-02-08

Probably the most consistently solid Brecker Brothers recording since the earliest, and with the added benefit of the many years of maturing that has made these two guys into the best at what they do. Great writing throughout without the throwaway numbers on the previous GRP release. Worth the price alone for Slang, African Skies, and Nightwalker...but it's all good!

5 out of 5 stars in my opinion m. brecker is the best sax soloist alive.......1999-12-02

track four and five are simply amazing; m. brecker is a prophet

4 out of 5 stars and don't call me Scarecrow.......2006-12-18

It's hard for me to say which IATWTC record I'd recommend first -- it's a tossup between "Out of the Loop," the duo's debut, or 2004's "The Cover Up." Their sound is a cross between Saint Etienne and Ladytron. If you like either of those groups, you'll probably enjoy this record. Also, I think their live shows are a lot more fun than any of the albums.

And remember, good concert etiquette means never having to say you're sorry. I'm sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Conspriacy.......2006-04-18

do we realize that the eleventh song on this cd is called September.. 9.11.

1 out of 5 stars Larry Silverstein Strikes Again.......2004-11-09

This piece seems to have been likely planted and engineered by someone with contacts to Godfather Larry Silverstein and the other planners of 911. I don't seriously think that the actual performers knew anything about what they were doing, but it's likely that finding out who really pulls the group's strings in the background would shed some light. If people can put aside the schlock about "Duh Ayrahbs dunnit" that was routine propaganda after 911, some real investigation here would be relevant.

3 out of 5 stars Freaky.......2003-03-08

Does anyone else find it extremely freaky that a group named I Am the World Trade Center had a cd out before 9/11 but the 11th track of the cd is titled "September"?!?!?!?!?

5 out of 5 stars I can't stop bouncing off the walls!.......2002-03-05

Some bands seem to have the worst luck. When I first heard the band I Am the World Trade Center, I felt like I was bouncing around at a Japanese rave dressed as a trendy Fruit fashion
victim. Their sound is simply put - fun! The tunes are jam-packed with cheerful, looped keyboard melodies and jolly, bleepy sounds.

But when Sept. 11 happened, their band name became rather morbid. Without a World Trade Center, what would the band name really mean to an audience who didn't know them before the terrorist attack? The band (Dan Geller and Amy Dykes) is well aware of this since moving to Brooklyn, NY from Athens, GA. And so out of a show of respect, I Am the World Trade Center is donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of their record Out of the Loop to the United Way of New York's September 11th Fund.

That aside, Out of the Loop (distributed from the ever-addictive Kindercore label that Geller co-founded) is something quite extraordinary. The duo record all their songs entirely on a single
laptop computer. Seriously! They don't need any fancy-schmancy studio. And this proves that no one has an excuse not to make funky music.

Songs like "Metro" and "In Your Head" are good enough to listen through a decent pair of headphones. Trust me, midway through the CD you'll be fighting the urge to bounce around your apartment. Don't fight it! Boing! Boing!

4 out of 5 stars Out of the Loop and into your Life.......2004-06-08

I was fortunate enough to hear Mark Weigle for the first time at the Phoenix, AZ Gay Pride festival in 2004. I was knocked out by his reserved yet fun demeanor, and his songs were alternately playful ("Bears") and deeply thoughtful ("I Remember"). As soon as his set was over, I wandered over to his booth and picked up a pair of his CDs. It was the best money I spent that weekend.

He plays folk music and is unabashedly out in his lyrics, but that doesn't rob the universality from a song like "In The last 5 Minutes." And as a gay man, I am always appreciative of singers who aren't afraid to be out about their lyrics, even if it means the likelihood of marginalizing the potential audience. There's no pronoun switching or intentional gender fuzziness about "Out" or "I Remember." It's just that, for a change, it's nice to hear someone performing for a gay audience that isn't backed by overbearing drum machines, synthesizers and screeching divas. (A scene and song form he adeptly parodies on "Love Your Body Like it Is.") "Out of the Loop" lives up to its title in that respect; it's music for the rest of us. Mark Weigle can get to your heart, and that's the best reason to pick up "Out Of The Loop."

5 out of 5 stars An all around great album.......2003-07-21

I had never heard of Mark before this album - and I didn't know what I was missing! This CD is constantly on - at home, at work, in the car. Some of the people at work are singing along with 'The Difference'!

If you enjoy a songwriter who tells stories (I Remember) - who touches upon common experiences (I relate very well to the estrangement of his father in the song 'Us Both') - who can have fun with songs ('Bears') - and who puts into words what some of wish we could say ('Out') - then this is the album for you!

5 out of 5 stars He just keeps getting better.......2003-04-16

I couldn't disagree with the first rater (Mr. Butterfield) of this cd more. This cd clearly represents musical and personal growth for Mark Weigle. While his previous cds are beautiful and haunting, with glimpses of pain in self-recognition and comfort in exploring one's identity, the new cd represents the drive toward health, self-esteem and acceptance.

Musically, he takes more risks, varying from his more country/folk/pop sound to one very danceable tune fit for even the hippest club. His ear for melody and arranging are the same high quality as they've always been so old fans will not be disappointed with this one.

It still amazes me that someone of his calibre has yet to be snatched up by the major labels. Come on Sony and BMG! This guy has the right stuff. The world is finally ready for an out artist with talent, wit and a devout following!

2 out of 5 stars Not great.......2003-01-06

Really quite liked Mark's first and second albums, but this one doesn't do it for me. Why?
It's the songs I think. They're either depressing, a little embarrassing, or just boring. It isn't enough, on the third album, to still be working out all those past hurts so explicitly. It comes over as whining, not confession. It's not universal. And when Mark does attempt to be upbeat, he borders on the trite. I found it really hard to pick out much of a melody in most of the songs on this album - they just kind of drift along aimlessly.
I'm sure he's a fun guy to see live. It's not so much fun to sit and listen to this CD.

In Thru Out doesn't just move, it travels--and takes the listener along for the ride. The CD starts in the clouds, with buzzing, swelling phasers, then descends to the earth like an awkward pelican. It pounds the ground for a while with a simple four on the floor, then rushes back into the atmosphere with the wings of a 747. This CD is a smartly cohesive musical sojourn through fields of breeze-bowed strings, rampant stampedes of rhythm patterns, and swarms of electronically generated sounds diverse enough to warrant their own taxonomies. Not entirely a dance album or an ambient album, it's a perfect blend of the two that will leave the listener totally transformed. --Beth Bessmer

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars hrm........2003-03-15

I find the musicality in this album, in most of the tracks, to be pretty techno-cliché if not downright cheesy. The voice samples though have a wider range on the scope of the Cheesy/Cool-o-Meter.

Track 3, "Approximately Yes (Trip 23)" features this male voice asking a girl if she took LSD approximately 50 times, and she keeps repeating, well, as you might guess: "approximately yes". The male voice then asks her if she could describe what happened on the 23rd trip. It is cheesy, but also kinda interesting to listen to 1) LSD being mentioned on a sample (not that this is a rare occasion on electronic music, specially psytrance) and 2) the focus on "23" (anyone who has read "The Illuminatus! Trilogy") will get it.

Track 5: "Destroy Reality". Here there is a better structure, strong basslines and a kind of engaging melody. One of the best tracks in the album, which doesn't mean it's an excellent track.

Track 6: "Candy Flip United" is, in my opinion the most embarassing track. Moronically happy melodies with horribly cheesy voice samples.

Track 10: "Love Generator" it starts with some tabla-like percussion which breaks the repetitiveness that permeates most of the album, it then moves back to the eventless boredom in the middle part, and -strange- ends up sounding like something that you could pull out of the "IDM" genre (a good thing in my opinion), resembling the moods in some aphex twin songs. I may be exagerating though.

this is a great cd from a vetern band. although i love the songs more on their debut "Saturday In Vain", this follow up has an engery and flow that cannot be match. "Amped Casters" is a tremendous song! Pick this CD up now because they have a new album coming up and from what I heard live at CMJ, it will be even better.

      5 out of 5 stars DRYER ROCKS!.......2000-01-23

This is the second release from the upstate NY power popsters and it definatly rocks. The songs are much better crafted than their first release. Very upbeat tempos and great melodic hooks will keep this CD in your player for a long long time. If your into indie power pop music and love male/ female vocals, then you will definatly love this record. If this band was on a major label you could kiss Shirley Manson and any other popular female vocalist goodbye. Rachel Sunday has one of the sexiest, smoothest vocals around. Don't miss out.

          Album Description

Much more than a singer, Mr Percival is a vocal artist - he paints with his voice using a loop pedal to create incredibly rich soundscapes and sublime grooves. The reaction to his live shows is always intense and resounding. His beautiful album 'Out of the Loop' is the product of 20 years spent performing live and exploring the power of the human voice including studying under his mentor Bobby McFerrin and singing for James Morrison. Mr Percival is art for the ears .
