Something New.......2006-08-19
I am thirteen and my mom and dad listen to rick springfield. Me, being an offspring of 2 of the biggest rick fans, love this CD by far. This is an amazing CD, and you can always get the other ones cheap. If you are a fan of ricks this CD is totally for you ;)
Best of the best of.......2006-08-11
Of all of Rick Springfield's best of and compliations, this is my favorite. It has a little bit of everything you want to hear, is fun to listen to and is reasonably prices. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would.
I love Rick Springfield.......2006-07-12
I love his hit songs. I just want to be counted as yet another person who loves this CD. He really is a great artist. I love to relive my teen years when I listen to this
Better than you might think........2006-04-16
I'm sure when most people think of Rick Springfield they think one-hit-wonder. "Jessie's Girl" was indeed one of the best songs of the 80's. Even I wasn't expecting to know much when I got this, yet track after track I kept saying, "I know this song", and usually knew it well. My personal favorites here would have to be "Love Somebody", "I've Done Everything For You", "Don't Talk To Strangers", and the great "Affair Of The Heart". Many others are as good, and the only song here I don't like much is "Celebrate Youth". There's just no hook on that one. Maybe it was just the era, but Rick had the ability to sound new wave on one song, pop on another, and just rock on many. After a listen to this collection, I think it's easy to see he was at least a ten-hit-wonder.
Where's "Honeymoon in Beirut"?.......2005-02-18
If you're going to release an album called Rick Springfield's Greatest Hits, how do you omit his greatest hit?
"Honeymoon in Beirut" is by far the best song the guy did --
It's like when people talk about the Police's Synchronicity album and they say "Every Breath You Take" is the best song --
Hello? "Tea in the Sahara" is the song that exemplifies what that album was about.........anyway.........
Rick had a lot of great songs, but to leave out his best one and put some of the clunkers that are on this album is inexcusable.

After 20+ Years It Still Rocks.......2006-01-20
I have several of his albums and in my opinion, this is his his best. It is rock music with thoughtful (if not "deep"), and sexy lyrics. At the time, he had two commercially successful albums under his belt, but was ridiculed by the music establishment as being a "bubble gum" artist. Living In Oz was his effort to quiet his critics and prove to the world that he could play serious music, not just pop hits. I think he more than accomplished his goal. As a young adult I listened to Rush, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, The Cars, Foreigner, Cheap Trick, etc. I was a rocker. But to this day I love this guy! 23 years later, I can still crank this album up and enjoy every song. I've seen Rick Springfield twice in concert. Once in Denver at Red Rocks back in the early 80's and once at the House of Blues in Orlando in the early 2000's. Both were awesome experiences. I'd go again in minute to see him, and I'd advise anyone who likes 80's rock music to buy this CD. It's a lot of fun.
"Caught Between a Hard, Hard Place and a Rock".......2004-09-08
When Living in Oz was released in 1983, gone were Rick Springfield's bubblegum, teeny bopper days of "Jessie's Girl," "Don't Talk to Strangers" and, the worst of the lot, "How Do You Talk To Girls" (ugh). On this album, Rick shows that he knew how to do plenty of things to girls and that he knew how to write interesting and kickin' rock songs. Two of the singles demonstrates the maturity in Springfield's songwriting in terms of music and lyrical content. The synthesizers in "Human Touch" and "Affair of the Heart" bring depth to the music. Yes, it sounds very 1980s but, if you like that sound like I do, this is an album for you. The third single "Souls" and the title track really rock. In fact, I can see hard rock/heavy metal fans liking a lot that is on this album. The evil voice hissing "I'll touch you and squeeze you and make you miiiine" blew me away the first time I heard it (THIS is Rick Springfield?). "Like Father, Like Son" is an interesting track with an orchestra.
Lyrically, this album definitely geared itself towards a more mature audience. Most of the songs are about sexuality (the "hard place" indeed). If there was any cover photo of Ron the "working class" dog that followed the theme of this album it would not be appropriate for young eyes. Rick thoroughly explores the art of having affairs. In the case of "Alyson," the subject of the song is an actor filming steamy love scenes (no doubt, on a soap opera) in front of the husband of the co-star with whom he's having an affair. "Affair of the Heart" was surprisingly graphic for a pop star with a young audience: "You shudder and shake, sink your teeth in my skin." "Motel Eyes" moves into another sexual topic: "Though there was something wicked about the way she flexed her thighs" and another nice line, "She started saying something about movement versus size." "Like Father, Like Son" is a strange yet interesting song about a man traumatized by his heavy-handed religious upbringing. If you only know the "Jessie's Girl" Rick Springfield, I recommend checking out Living in Oz. It will change your perspective on the former teen heartthrob.
Go on Rick! Get your rock on!.......2004-08-03
Nobody believed Rick could be heavy, yet sound so good. An absolute bombastic, energetic, fun album. Rick's finest work. Songs that make you wanna groove and bang your head at the same time. This is a cd that when you hear songs such as "Souls," "Motel Eyes," or "Affair Of The Heart," you'll wish the volume control went pass MAX.
Love to relive it !!.......2004-06-13
The only album I have ever owned where I've enjoyed every single track! And I never get tired of listening to any of them.
A surprisingly superb recording.......2004-01-08
Back in 1983 when this recording was released I was fresh out of high school and a friend talked me into going to a RS concert in Louisville because it would be full of girls. While we guys were certainly the minority, what I experienced was nothing less than one of the top five live performances I've ever seen. This man is a master entertainer and this album (showing my age :-) was the one that proved he was more than a pretty face (in fact, he was a musician long before taking up acting to pay the bills).
Living in Oz displays a maturity in songwriting as well as subject material that makes this recording a good one to listen to in private with headphones.
This is definitely a two thumbs up!

ROCK OF LIFE/ FANTASTIC.......2007-02-07
This a great cd. It has all his hits from Rick's career..I love it.
Written In Rock: The Rick Springfield Anthology.......2007-01-05
This 2 cd set has the best songs of Rick's career spanning from the 70s until current. It is a MUST HAVE for all die hard RS fans....and a great way to introduce new people to Rick's music.
He definitely doesn't get the credit he deserves and after listening to this CD you'll see just how great of a musician/songwriter Rick really is.
Finally, a decent Springfield compilation cd..........2006-07-30
Past compilations were very lacking... This is a great collection of hits. Human Touch, Love Somebody, Affair of the Heart, Souls, Rock of Life & Free are faves of mine... I agree w/ Todd (a review below) that Bruce should have been included. It would have made this compilation truly complete.
This collection helps to show why he's been called the "Father of Power Pop" by some critics (inspiring other recording artists to this very day)... & why his music still connects to so many fans out there (who still attend his awesome, energetic concerts).
The man ROCKS!
Take care & God bless...

Fantastic.......2006-02-25
Very strong album and it's great that RS was at the helm to make this retrospective album. He has had a great career and is vastly underated. Incredible sonwriter, guitar player and of course singer and not a bad actor as well. So it is a strong album that covers from the 70's thru the heyday 80's and into the present and his music has changed with the times. And that is the key to longevity.
Congrats Rick for a long career and keep on rocking.
Best Of The Best... And about Bruce?.......2006-02-24
I guess that I'll echo the sentiments of the other reviewers by saying that this is the best collection of Rick Springfield's music on two CD's. All the hits are here as well as some very popular album tracks. Songs like "Carry Me Away" and "Inside Sylvia" originally appeared on the 1981 album Working Class Dog. And "Love Somebody," "Don't Walk Away" and "Bop" are all from the 1984 soundtrack Hard To Hold.
But about this allusive song "Bruce." It originally was only available on the Australian release of Working Class Dog in 1981. Then, it reappeared with a new, remixed music track on a 1984 Rick Springfield album called Special Feelings that was released on Mercury Records.
So, it's anyone's guess as to who holds the copy rights to the master recording of the song "Bruce." And other than Rick's vocals appearing on the Special Feelings album, I seriously doubt that he had anything to do with the overly synthesized, overly processed sound of this album. Not some of his better work to say the least. But I digress... This two disc set is packed from rim to rim with tons of really great RS hits and memories. If you have been putting off getting a "best of" collection because you were waiting for the right one, well, wait no more!

remember back then .......2007-04-16
I remember when I was a kid, my dad had this on cassette, and I picked it up and listened to it, I loved it. See, I am only 22, and I like this tape, and hopefully, I will be able to own this on cd one day. I like music like REO Speedwagon, Journey, 38 specail, Van Zant, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Billy Ray Cyrus and so much country music. Not the older country stuff. Hank Williams Jr is as old as I get when it comes to country and the early 90's. But yeah, this is definantly a great cd. Seems like it had alot of potential back then. I know Jessie's girl was a hit.
Excellant Remastering of a Classic.......2007-04-11
Finally, this great and I mean that in all sincerity CD has been given the remaster treatment. I believe every album and cassette I owned in the early 80s should be given such a treatment, and I mean the kind of styling this album got not that schlock job Chrysalis did on my Benatar CDs. On top of all 10 glorious songs from this 1981 album, the powers that be (and Ricky boy included) conjured up the "Jessie's Girl" demo, and two other songs from his orignal demo including a rocking little ditty called "Easy To Cry" - the CD even has a song by song description by Rick and two of the producers Keith Olsen & Bill Drescher. I found out some interesting stuff like Keith was called in from his sessions on Pat Benatar's Crimes Of Passion to work on 2 songs for Working Class Dog, but because Pat's album was so important he could only do it on the weekends, of course he grabbed Pat's hubby Neil Geraldo and he played on a few of the songs, and "I've Done Everything For You" a Sammy Hagar penned tune was given to Rick by Keith because Miss Patty Patty declined it saying it was too macho. But that is all petty trivia compared to the pop/rock genius that is this album - the singles need no real explanation; "Jessie's Girl", "Love Is Alright Tonite", the aformentioned "I've Done.." were all roller skating staples when I was but a wee tyke - but the other tracks are so great as well - all 3 minute pop gems "Hole In My Heart" (though I'm stil partial to Lisa Hartman's faster cover), "Carry Me Away", the reggae twinged "Daddy's Pearl", hilarious "Everybody's Girl" (it isn't nice, no but they call you everybody's girl/ they say, here she comes, here she comes, here comes everybody's girl), the jam blues punch of "Red Hot & Blue Love" and the sinister but sexy "Inside Silvia." A great pick up and a great remaster.
Great bonus material and cool liner notes.......2006-07-28
Working Class Dog was the album that made Rick Springfield an international music star. True, Rick had released albums prior to Working Class Dog, but this was the release that set him into the pop music stratosphere. Working Class Dog has been re-released after 25 years--re-mastered and with bonus tracks. Working Class Dog includes Rick Springfield's most well known hit "Jessie's Girl." Other popular songs on the album include "I've Done Everything For You," and "Love Is Alright Tonite." The best part about this re-master (in addition to the songs sounding better than ever), is that included on the CD are three bonus tracks. "Easy To Cry," and the original version of "Taxi Dancing" which have not been released in the past are included. Also on the disc is the demo version of "Jessie's Girl." As for liner notes the CD includes extensive almost Q&A style album notes from Rick Springfield and people involved with the making of the album. Quite interesting reading I must say. Rick provides comments, some quite extensive for each song on the album. Also included is a reproduction of the handwritten lyrics for "Jessie's Girl."
If you owned the album before, pick up this new version. You will only love it more.

It's hard to imagine that this album's bleak-spirited songs, grinding modern rock tack, and contemporary production aura are all the products of a musician who scored his first American chart hit in 1972, then was written off again a decade later after a string of MTV-fueled hits--including the classic "Jessie's Girl." But this is indeed the same Rick Springfield, his former bubblegum-rock incarnation belied by a tough musical stance that would be the envy of many a rocker half his age. But one doesn't have to dissect the slinky, eastern-inflected guitar hooks and fat, thumping bass of the wry "Jesus Saves" (chorus: "Jesus saves white trash, baby like you") very far to find that Springfield's songwriting instincts remain rock-solid. It's just as surprising to find that this self-produced album is the product of ears that have been anything but dormant in recent years, and savvy--or is it idealistic?--enough to turn a spunky, thrashed-up take of the Easybeats' 60's jewel "I'll Make You Happy" into a bridge across the generations. Cynical ears may mistake it all for a pose; if so it's an acting job the former soap opera star should be proud of. --Jerry McCulley

Different.......2007-05-16
This disc is quite different from the "Jessie's Girl" phase (if you will) that I grew up with. That being said, I still love this disc and singer/songwriter very much. I'm sure that I will buy anything that he puts out in the future.

OH YEAH!.......2007-01-06
Coming from a fan of well forever-I'm as old as he is and have been to his concerts and have everything he's ever done. Not all have been great and he even lost me with a few-those of you not into the spiritual "out there" stuff he's done will know what I'm saying. but this, this is like going to rock heaven. I was allright!!! He's back. If you are only into his softer ballads don't bother. If you liked most of rock of life get ready to rock some more!
A Pleasant Surprise.......2006-11-05
I have been a fan of Rick Springfield's since 1972 when I first saw him on "American Bandstand" it might have been his first American TV appearance. I then got his second album, "Comic Book Heroes". I have followed, on and off, his music since then.
After having not listened to anything new of his for a long time I got back into the groove and bought SDAA. I was surprised, pleasantly surprised at how wonderful this album is start to finish.
Gone is the pop of "Jessie's Girl" this a rock and roll album. Hard driving guitars and fantastic drum lines each song is better than the next. Even my husband who is lover of Hard Rock likes this album.
I find it to be a mature album from an artist who wanted to, no needed to grow up even at this late age. I HIGHLY recommend this cd! Play it loud!

All time Favorite!.......2006-07-25
I have never before written an online review of an album for any artist. But having just recently replaced many of my old Rick Springfield albums and cassettes with compact discs, I was reminded just how special these songs were -and are- to me. For me, Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet was where it all began. Yes, I know Jessie's Girl (from Working Class Dog) had already been a hit, and Rick was already a heart throb on GH by this time, but for ME, this album was a turning point. Of course Don't Talk To Strangers was what sucked me in...but upon listening to the rest of the album, I found the songs that would stand the test of time for me.
I know there have been many 'greatest hits' and 'best of' compilations of Rick's music. They all include hits from this album. "I Get Excited" is a great song. "Kristina" is an all time fave. We all loved Rick's tribute to his father, "April 24, 1981". But there is one song on this album that is not on those other compilations...and is a good enough reason to make sure Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet has a place in your music library. It's my all time favorite Rick Springfield song, "The American Girl". In 1982, I didn't understand all the lyrics. I was 11 years old. But I played this song so many times I can't believe I didn't wear a hole in the vinyl. Once I got this album on cassette, I rewound over and over again to hear my song. Those first few notes still get me every time!
I've listened to and loved Rick's music from the 70's all the way thru today, as he continues to write, record and release new music. His talent is ever apparent, his songs are infectious. He's an amazing performer live. I recommend checking out all of Rick's music if you're unfamiliar. Especially Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet, and "The American Girl" in particular!
Not A Spoiler.......2005-07-27
To quickly capitalize on the success of Working Class Dog, Rick Springfield released the appropriately titled Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet in 1982 less than year after its predecessor. Mr. Springfield doesn't reinvent the wheel as Success mimics the style of Dog. In fact Success improves on the sound. While nothing is as immediate and memorable as "Jesse's Girl", the album is sharper and better as a whole. "Don't Talk To Strangers" is a great pop song that peaked at number two. "Calling All Girls", "I Get Excited" and "What Kind Of Fool Am I?" are also solid tracks.
Rick's most consistent studio album........2005-01-24
Out of all of Rick's "Big 3" albums from 1981-83, I prefer this one the most. He basically takes the sound of his debut, WORKING CLASS DOG, and did a fairly soundalike album. However, this is anything but a copycat--most of the songs are good, the writing is a little more varied and there's no clunker (i.e. Inside Sylvia) to be found.
I would also say that it's his most "carefree". That's not to say there's not good songwriting or topics covered, but point blank, it's just alot of fun - very much in spirit with the Top 40/arena rock sounds of 1982, but also with some definite 70's power pop influence too.
1. Calling All Girls -- This is a great opening track, pretty much summarizing the feel of the whole album. Upbeat, fun, and, yes, alot of "girl" and girl-themed songs! It's a power pop number with a classic rock vibe, ala The Knack's "My Sharona".
2. I Get Excited -- Starting with a chugging guitar sound like on John Fogerty's 1985 hit "Rock & Roll Girls" this keeps the same general pace. It's also upbeat fun pop/rock, however, this is more of a happy love song - it almost sounds like the soundtrack to how a guy would feel goin' on a date, the anticipation, etc.
3. What Kind of Fool Am I -- Big hit that's fairly similar to the previous song. Heck, it could be the sequel if ya think about it - now dealing with a regretful loss/breakup. Starting as a Lionel Richie-styled 80's ballad, it becomes a semi rocker like some of Journey's slower songs (especially the twinkly keyboards). It's still overall happy sounding, though.
4. Kristina -- One of the harder rocking songs, this time about wanting to escape and get away somewhere (yep, with a girl named...). The guitars are a bit louder, with a fast-paced keyboard melody to back it up - I'd liken it to Loverboy's early 80's material (albeit with a more power pop influence).
5. Tonight -- We again slow it down a bit for the 2nd semi-ballad about two workers (in love it sounds like) who wanna get away. Again, this sequencing makes sense! I'd call this a slow rock number, falling somewhere between "Excited" and "Fool".
(NOTE: One of the characters in this song is named Jesse. I wonder if he was thinkin' of that one big hit? Nah, couldn't've been! ;))
6. Black is Black -- This is the only weak song on the first side IMHO. It's a medium tempo pop song, but it just feels like something is missing - it sort of plods along without much of a hook. It also has a slightly 'dark' sound to it.
7. Don't Talk to Strangers -- This huge hit is another I recall from the radio way back when. Close as Rick ever got to bubblegum, but it's so good I can excuse it! Mid-fast tempo pop, halfway between a love song and lite arena rock, it reminds me of Toto's "Rosanna" or the same-era Jackson Browne.
8. How Do You Talk to Girls -- Again, we know who Rick intended this album for.:) This is another fun song about guys hanging out one night and asking the preverbial question we all do (and, no, I don't know the answer either! LOL). More of a straight upbeat pop song with a new wave flavor.
[After this is where, to me, the album takes a bit of a downturn. Not to say the last 4 songs are bad, simply alot less memorable.]
9. Still Crazy For You -- A slower track, like a cross between a ballad and upbeat pop/rock. We have another love song of sorts with a keyboard melody. Style-wise, it's similar to "What Kind of Fool" but without the hooks. The moody guitar work reminds me of Mr. Mister's "Broken Wings".
10. The American Girl -- Starting off ballad-like and turning into a medium tempo, 70's rock-styled pop song, we're again dealing with a story of a certain girl (i.e. "the American girl, she's breakin' hearts. She's a mystery to me").
11. Just One Kiss -- A more uptempo take on the love song style of the past two songs, although the slightly unique keyboard sound sets it apart a teeny bit, just saving it from mediocrity.
12. April 24, 1981 -- Not really a song, but a slow and brief passage, dedicated to Rick's (then) recently deceased father.
All in all, I consider this to be his strongest overall album, although the following year's LIVING IN OZ (with it's harder rocking sound and more serious subjects) is pretty close behind.
Spirit of the 80's.......2004-08-31
Although I thought that Working Class Dog was a better album, I thought that Success was a wonderful follow-up. And let's be real here, Rick was not trying to win an Oscar with either of the albums. The 80's were a fun time and the songs reflected that - the lyrics didn't always make sense, but boy they sold the records! I can think of a lot worse lyrics that any of the songs that are on this album. When I listen to it, it takes me right back to high school. :) Thanks, Rick.
Success Hasn't Spoiled Rick - He Just Gets Better.......2002-07-31
Actually like this even better than Working Class Dog. Great beat - super hits evolved here - Don't Talk to STrangers can't be beat; American Girl is phenomenal & Rick's voice (still a touch of accent) is irresistible. A must for any Rick Springfield fan - a different sound -one that we've all come to love and appreciate and adore. Buy it - you won't be sorry.

Onetime working-class dog Rick Springfield has kept his nose to the grindstone since his early-80s "Jessie's Girl"/"General Hospital"/Tiger Beat-centerfold heyday. It seems as though he's realized he's making as big of a dent in the national consciousness as former co-stars Luke and Laura. Thus The Day After Yesterday, a disc of covers that, despite Springfield's raspy best efforts, communicates a certain last-ditch desperation. "I wanted to see if it would be easier and less painful doing a CD of songs I hadn't written ... and it was," Springfield writes in the album's liner notes. The trouble is, that ease devolved audibly into disillusionment: his song choices couldn't be less interesting and his delivery lacks soul, if not grit. Longtime fans, however, may want to soldier on. Springfield's reading of Foreigner's "Waiting for a Girl Like You" may be snoozy, but the original wasn't exactly a thrill ride either. The same goes for Human League's pleasantly humdrum "Human." In a split second of boldness, Springfield closes the disc with a palatable, clear-eyed cover of "Imagine." It's a song about possibilities, and mixed with a healthy shot of inspiration, its message should serve the artist better next go-round. --Tammy La Gorce

Love to listen to it.......2007-03-13
This is so different than any other Rick Springfield cd. I loved the way he sounds.
Rick shows he can do Sexy as well as Rock.......2007-03-02
Give this guy a break, he hasn't gone soft or easy listening. This albumn is a just what a woman needs to chill.
Turn down the lights, open a bottle of wine/beer put on this CD and grab the one you love (that is if Rick has other plans for the evening)
This is definately one of his sexier compliations, he puts his own spin on each song and makes it special, I hope he does more like it. You can't get enough of his deep, sexy, voice.
Rick truly rocks

Great Job!.......2006-07-30
Though I'm still waiting for a cd w/ all-Rick-penned songs, I really enjoy this cd. I like all of the covers. I especially like "I'm Not In Love," "Holding on to Yesterday," "Waiting for a Girl Like You," "Let's Go Out Tonight" & "Miss You Nights." But my fave from this cd is the only "new" song & the only one writen by Rick, "Cry."
Take care & God bless...

Rick Springfield made pretty good pop-rock radio fodder in his early-'80s heyday; "Jessie's Girl," "I've Done Everything for You," and "Love Is Alright Tonight" are hard to argue with now, even if you didn't have much use for them when they were hits. Unfortunately, this former General Hospital star has happened upon enlightenment and feels the need to share it with the world. True feeling seems to lie behind "It's Always Something" (a tribute not to Gilda Radner, but to Springfield's late father), "Act of Faith," and the rest, but the shiny, slightly dated production and soap-ready emoting make Karma less interesting than a thrift-store copy of Working Class Dog. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
This is awesome !.......2005-10-04
I was a huge fan of Rick's music throughout the 80's. One thing I noticed - each album he made was better than the last... the music, the lyrics, the maturity. If you look at the difference between Working Class Dog and Human Touch - and then the difference between that and Rock Of Life, well, it's just a staggering increase in quality. Then he seemed to go really quiet....
Until this came out in 1999. This album blew me away then and I still love it and listen to it now (it's October 2005 as I write this). The only song I think he could have left off is the first spoken track. If I was going to be really picky I could also say Rick could have left off "Ordinary Girl" because it's an "ordinary" song (can you believe this was the track chosen to be released as a single ?????). Other than that every song is fantastic.
My absolute favourite on this is "In Veronica's Head".
If you are a fan of Rick's you'll love this. If you're not a fan - yet - then pick up this album. You'll see.....
Better Man.......2004-12-04
Springfield's 1999 release is an excellent one! With this disc, he explores a more spiritual side of life. Rick's spirituality throbs with passion & joy. The title track has some searing electric lead & pops with great energy, "As the smallest stream runs to a river & every river runs to the sea, so every little bit of love I give to another...comes back to me." "Prayer" has an original melody & driving beat & the delightful chorus, "Now I send the prayer to heaven for the chance to be a better man than the man I see. I send the prayer to heaven, lay your hands on me." My favorite track is "Act of Faith" that starts with an eerie chorus and builds as Springfield explores emotions of adjusting to the loss of a loved one. It is tremendously emotional and powerful, "Love is a healer." The other tracks are also excellent Springfield vehicles like the excellent "The White Room" with its catchy melody and an edge in the lyric, "In her head is the same obsession & all the bottles & pills won't heal her heart; She heard his last confession & every word just tears her apart." "In Veronica's Head" makes me hit the repeat button. "Karma" is an excellent set; one well worth discovering. Enjoy!
awesome rediscovery.......2004-10-30
I have to admit when I ordered this cd it was just for nostalgia's sake; but, upon listening to it I really was surprised! It is an awesome cd, and I think it is really one of his best ever! I like 'shock/denial/anger/acceptance' but this album really says "Rick Springfield" to me-true, raw emotion and it is musically arranged well. I love this album, and it is a shame if other fans do not discover this gem.
Purchased After A Concert High.......2004-02-27
Back in 2000, I saw Rick Springfield in concert on his Karma tour. I'll admit it: I went only because I'm an 80's girl and who doesn't know Rick was the man in the 80's! After "experiencing" Rick live, I was blown away. The man puts on an awesome show. I left there totally psyched and wanted to get my hands on all things Rick. Since I had a lot of his older stuff, I figured I'd pick this one up. I love this album! I think it shows a much more mature Rick, but at the same time it keeps with his pop/dance sound. I like all the songs on here. Do yourself a favor and go out and buy this. You won't regret it.
The "Working Class Dog"Grows Up.......2004-02-13
I am a proud owner of this CD.If you are a Rick Springfield fan there is nothing on here that will change your mind. Its not the 80s Jessies Girl sound but he's been moving further away from that with each release. My favorite song is It's Always Something.Don't we all think that at least 2o times a day.I recommend it

Bounce Right Back........2004-02-28
Rick Springfield was a god of power-pop from 1981 to 1985. He was unstoppable with hit after hit. "Tao" was the end cap on that period of time. All the songs this album fit together extremely well. It sits alongside "Working Class Dog", "Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet" and "Living In Oz" as one of Rick's best albums. "Tao" came off the extremely lackluster "Hard To Hold" debacle the year before (though he had hits from that album/film with "Bop 'Til You Drop" and "Love Somebody" anyway!) If you're looking for great 80's music buy all four albums I've mentioned from Springfield and then stop because "Rock Of Life" and "Karma" were not as well crafted. As a long time fan, I am looking forward to his newest release "Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance" and hope that Rick returns to form. Rick Springfield has to be one of the most overlooked talents in popular music and one listen to "Tao", or any of the other three albums I've listed, will prove it.
Still great........2003-08-24
I found this tape in my collection of old tapes packed away. Being a long time Rick Springfield fan I'm ashamed to admit I do not remember buying this but put it in and listened to it and found that I did remember listening to this music and I love it. I have not stopped playing the tape and now CD since I unpacked it. I have most of Rick's CD's (I had the albums then the cassettes and still felt compelled to have these on CD)and listen to all of them often. Still great music.
Rock Is Life.......2002-05-02
What Rick tries to show in this album is his lifelong devotion to the way of rock just as Japanese martial art. To Rick, rock is not just the way to earn a living. It is a way of life. So his penchant to Daoism naturally resulted. He tried to express the essence of Daoism through his rock in 1985 manner.
Dance This World Away starts from Chinatown-like atmosphere. Celebrate Youth according to Rick is the modern interpretation of Daoism. State of the Heart starts from voice transformation showing the change of state from young to old borrowing daoism teachings. Walking On The Edge starts from gloomy dark atmosphere showing his inner struggle more vividly. But this album on the whole is positive, optimistic and never carried away into spiritual world. Overall, even if you are not aware of Chinese philosophy or things it is enjoyable ...and you will come across a new finding every time you play this CD. It is really deep and excellent stuff.
A Must Have for Rick Fans.......2000-07-20
This cd has got to be one of my favorites. The well known singles are great "Celebrate Youth" "Dance This World Away" "State of the Heart", but you must listen to "My Father's Chair" - a tribute to his dad and follow up to April 24, 1981. You can just hear the feeling in his voice as he sings the words and plays his piano. Other favorites of mine are "Walk Like a Man" and "Written in Rock" about the struggles in his life. Add it to your collection; you won't be disappointed.

So very close..........2004-02-28
A Collection this comprehensive is generally defined by what it leaves out, but first let's look at what you get:
1-Working Class Dog (1981): complete
2-Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet (1982): all but one song
3-Living In Oz (1984): complete
4-Hard to Hold SDTK (1985): 3 of 6 songs
5-Tao (1986): 5 of 10 songs
and the LONG out of print
6-Rock of Life (1988): all but one song (making this collection well worth the price of admission were it devoid of everything else)
Strange that the folks who released this CD decided to leave off "American Girl" from SHSMY which was featured in movies and on T.V. a lot around the time of it's release. Perhaps it's because the "Legendary" series is put out by BMG Australia who feel that Australian folks don't need an ode to "American" girls on their Springfield comps (?). I don't however, think it's a completely bad thing that only half of TAO made the cut because what's here should peak the un-initiated's interest. TAO is a VERY good album but it's still widely available and generally quite cheap. The inclusion of all but Rick's cover of The Small Faces "Groovy" from RoL is where you really get your money's worth. RoL is perhaps his smoothest and most substantive record ever. Where BMG really missed the boat was not including more songs from the "Hard to Hold" Soundtrack. This album is selling for stupidly high fundage at online auctions and the like. Criminally missing from HtH is "Don't Walk Away" which was a charted hit in several countries around the world. Still, BMG is to be commended for getting liscense to include early hits "Speak to the Sky" and "Take a Hand," although the latter is bizarrely way out of chronological order.
You should note that even though this collection is relatively new on the scene, it is not digitally remastered. The source material is mastered to itself which makes for an dynamically consistant listen but there are other collections out there with much cleaner and brighter sound.
Overall, a very affordable way to get a tremendous amount of Rick's, until only recently, frustratingly underrated musical output. Only loses a star because BMG clearly had the authority (and the time remaining on the discs) to make this a truly complete anthology, but for some reason didn't.
Legendary - describes Rick Springfield & this cd.......2003-08-22
Great - a great compilation of Rick's early & heyday prime songs - carry this with you and leave 4 other cds at home. So glad this was released - listen all the time. Superb collection! Great to pair with Karma - more recent cd not inlcuded in this listing. Buy it, you'll like it. Great variety of Rick Springfield music.
almost complete!.......2003-08-05
This must be the only collection that can be really called "the best".Along with the well known hits other songs that should be on a collection like this ("cant stop hurting you","one reason"to name a few).Still its a shame that "writen in rock" from "tao" is missing.Since the cd shows deep knowledge on Ricks material the absence of this great song is a real mystery!!
Overall a good effort!
A great way to get the hard to find stuff........2003-07-14
This is the BEST collection of Rick Springfield songs out there and practically the only way to hear all the songs except one from the Rock of Life album. It is worth the price just to have great sounding copies of Honeymoon in Beirut and Woman.
The Rick Springfield Touch.......2003-05-24
This is an excellent collection which includes all of his Working Class Hero album. My only complaint is Don't Walk Away is missing from this collection. Other than that it is a well rounded set and a great addition to your collection.
