These 16 sides were selected from the more than 50 that guitarist Bryant and pedal steel player West cut in Los Angeles between 1951 and 1956, when they were also most in demand as country--and occasionally pop--session men. Forty years later, these are still considered the hottest, most fully realized, most musical instrumentals in the history of country. West's slashing, muscular steel lines send out sparks, while Bryant's bop-influenced, breakneck guitar cuts clean as a scalpel. Using the guitar-steel pairings of Western swing as a jumping-off point, these guys created a jazzy body of work that many guitarists are still trying to decipher. --John Morthland

5 out of 5 stars Ahead of their time!!!.......2004-06-25

HOT, HOT, HOT!!! One of the best instumental albums you'll ever hear. Inventive, creative, original. As Jimmy's son points out, he was Leo's torchbearer with the tele. According to George Fullerton, Mr. Fender's right-hand man, he and Leo were at a club in Riverside, CA, looking for guitarists to "test drive" this new invention. During a set break they approached Jimmy, who took it, sat on the edge of the stage and began picking. As George related the story, all in attendance stopped what they were doing, gathered around and watched Bryant pick away. It, I'm sure, was an historic moment.

Thankfully, the combination of Mr. Bryant and Mr. Fender's invention can be heard in its purist form. Teamed up with Speedy (and that name is accurate) West, you have an album that cooks. Remember, this is the 1950s, and there are no tricks here. As pure and clean as it gets.

Be prepared to be sent into the stratosphere!

5 out of 5 stars The epitome of pickin' and grinnin'.......2003-11-29

Originals and souped up country standards, played at warp speed, with sock rhythm and bop lines. My favorite is "Arkansas Traveler" as a I-vi-ii-V song instead of the traditional I-IV-I-V.

5 out of 5 stars Just get it and hold onto your seat !!!!!!.......2003-03-25

My father, Jimmy Bryant, played the heck out of his Telecasters - in fact, he was the first artist to play a Fender guitar for Leo Fender. If you play guitar and have never heard him play, this may scare you to grasp the thought of him doing this in the early to mid 50's - just think about being the first to play a solid body electric guitar without having someone else to copy chops from - and it sounding like this! Hope you like it - you can read more about my dad at ...
Kind regards,
John Bryant

4 out of 5 stars Where's Mary?.......2002-05-22

To those of us coming from a more Pop point of view this CD sounds like a ruralized Les Paul--lots of flash and a 2/2 beat.

The never-ending debate about which cubby hole to stuff Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant into (are they Country? C&W? Jazz? Country Jazz? Pop Country? yadda yadda yadda?) is less than interesting to me. Whatever it is they're playing, I like it.

"Stratosphere Boogie," "Arkansas Traveler" and "Flippin' The Lid" are the highlights for me. West/Bryant understood the difference between showing off by picking at 1000 miles an hour and delivering a tune with a pit of flash and panache.

4 out of 5 stars Speedy West mediocre?.......2002-01-08

I saw the comments of some here about speedy west not being very good. I just wanted to say the cuts on this album are not very representative of some of his best work. There is a CD put out by a european company of about 30 tracks of stuff from his days on the tennesee ernie ford show that are hands down much better than this material.

    5 out of 5 stars A Legend that redefined the Jazz/Funk Genre........2005-09-15

One of Maynard Ferguson's greatest albums, Master of the Stratosphere, is a showcase of his great talent. He wails on the upper register and makes it sound so easy. Some of his greatest stuff is on this CD as well, including the famous "MacArthur Park" and "Chameleon". Songs you will end up listening to many times.

This album also contains remakes of two very popular theme songs from the 70's, Rocky and Shaft. Whenever Maynard Ferguson remakes a song, he builds on to it from the ground up. The original lyrical line will still be there, but he builds a tower of high notes, intricate harmonies, and just a wall of intense brass sound on top."MacArthur Park" is probably one of the greatest examples of this. Other songs like "Gospel John" include a slow moody song developing into a Disney-esque type melody.

The reason I picked this album over "Primal Scream" or "Chameleon" is because this CD has all of the most popular songs. Master of the Stratosphere is like his Greatest Hits. It's difficult to find another Maynard CD with "MacArthur Park","Chameleon","Primal Scream", or "Gospel John" on them. So if you have an interest in jazz or brass, I Highly recommend this album. In fact if you have never heard Maynard before, I guarantee that this CD will impress you, and you will spend hours listening to it.

    4 out of 5 stars There's only one master.......2005-05-25

I had the great privilege of seeing Maynard Ferguson perform live in Kingsport, Tennessee. He is just as amazing as before, even though he was clearly suffering from some sort of chronic disease (either emphysema or CHF).

What irony. Climbing five steps to the stage clearly winded him; he was puffing like an old locomotive. But, once onstage and after catching his breath, he was as good as ever - maybe better.

High-register trumpet playing may not be as often-heard as before, but it's an art that will not be lost. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Maynard Ferguson - Master of the Stratosphere.......2004-07-25

This is one of the greatest Maynard albums of all time. Each song is played with incredible intensity, endurance, and velocity. When I had finished listening to this, I was stunned by how powerfully Maynard can play. Primal Scream is really upbeat and has an awesome sax solo, and Superbone Meets the Badman is another excellent track.

    4 out of 5 stars Worth it....For now........2003-10-28

This is a nice collection of some of Maynard's great 1970's work, but if you're a big Maynard fan like me, you might already own a lot of these songs on their original releases, or on other albums/compilations. This album is great simply for the fact that it contains great MF work like "Spinning Wheel", "Pagliacci", "Primal Scream" and "Theme From Shaft", which are not available on any other Maynard Compact Disc. MF reaches screech range on "Pagliacci", one of his craziest performances ever! I really wish Primal Scream would come out on CD, I've wanted the album for quite a while. This album also includes classic MF performances like "La Fiesta", "MacArthur Park" and "Gospel John", and has his biggest hit "Rocky Theme (Gonna Fly Now)". This album is nice to be able to have but it will become obselete if the MF Horn albums 1-4 and Primal Scream are ever reissued on CD by Columbia.

    4 out of 5 stars If I were a chick, I'd want to have Maynard's love-child........2003-01-12

Okay, so this album contains "Gonna Fly Now", Maynard's all time biggest hit, and also one of his cheesiest tunes ever, right up there with his entire "Hot!" album. So forget about that one, get over it, and look at the rest of the tunes on this compilation. Every other song is classic, kickin' MF. And songs like "Spinning Wheel", "Pagliacci", and "Shaft" are, to my knowledge, not available on any other CD. These are some of Maynard's most powerful and most fun songs, great solid fusion jazz. Of course, there are many more songs from this era of Maynard's career that deserve to be reissued, but this album will do quite nicely until Columbia gets off their rear ends and reissues albums like "MF Horn". So, anyway, if you're a Maynard fan, or if you just like loud, rockin' jazz, you'll get your money's worth out of this CD.

If you are into groovin', this is a nice fat slice of Moog-infested, bouncing bass-line, in-the-pocket FONK. Yes sir, it's that head-boppin' funk that we love so much. And it's done well, my cosmic funkonauts.

This album is just the sort of thing I love to stumble across. True, your mommy may ask you why you are listening to the soundtrack to a 1970's porn flick. But that is OK. Just tell her your having a funky good time with JTQ as NJK.

Enjoy this one, folks. There are few as fun as this.

5 out of 5 stars Not what you might think.......2006-06-10

Contrary to popular belief (in America anyawy), this album is NOT A RARE 70's piece of funk!! It is an album made by a bunch of british jazz players known as the James Taylor quartet... This album isn't worth the ridiculous amounts of money that it seems to go for on this website (i've just seen a copy for £130!). Just google the name and you'll see it was all a big joke and you can get this album for a resonable price on the british amazon. I got my copy for £3 sterling in a second hand shop!
Nevertheless it is a fantastic album well worth owning, but don't get ripped off.

    5 out of 5 stars maximum overdrive.......2003-08-05

I can't say enough about this cd. I'll be surprised if many happen upon this review, but if you do and you like uptight, out of your gord, hot funky jazz...well, find this cd somewhere and listen to it. It is one of my all time favorites. The music is all instrumental with lots of organ, sax, groovin' bass and sharp drum work. Unfortunately, this music was churned our back in the seventies by members of what is now known as The James Taylor Quartet, or, at least that is what they where called at one time. Why this music didn't take off at least with cult following is a mystery to me. The stuff I've heard from MM&W doesn't hold a candle to it. If you like funky acid jazz, you don't want to pass this work up. Wooooo!

5 out of 5 stars New Jersey Kings = James Taylor Quartet (UK).......2001-10-16

This is actually the James Taylor Quartet (UK). This was a side project under an unknown name. The JTQ groove is all over this CD and it's a funky jam! This is a hard to find CD, don't hesitate to buy it if it's available. Just do it, you'll be very glad you did so. Party to the bus stop is another great disc by the NJ Kings, check it out.

    5 out of 5 stars Great one!.......2001-07-26

If you are an Acid Jazz fan you must have this one. It is a really rare CD, and despite it only has 8 track, its musical content is magnificent.

It will blow your mind, and maybe you will experience a stratosphere breakdown.

5 out of 5 stars Quality space rock.......2001-06-22

A lot of noise has been made recently about the lo-fi recording aesthetic, starting around the time Guided by Voices got noticed by everybody. Guided by Voices have always struck me as a band that is not necessarily helped or hindered by their lo-fi recording nature (although I think the lo-fi days for GBV are dead and gone now, which is just fine by me); Bob Pollard's sublime hooks work equally well coming from a home 4-track or a 24-track studio recording mixer. Why do I keep going on about GBV and not Duster? Well, I mention GBV because they are famously lo-fi, but Duster uses the 4-track recording method to very good effect on this album, in a way I've never heard before. That is, the home recording nature of many of the songs on Stratosphere has a very positive effect on the songs; I'm not sure I can say that about any other "lo-fi" album I've heard. The lo-fi recording techniques here add a layer of warmth to the songs that would simply be missing in a studio context.

But what about the music? In one word: amazing. There isn't a lot of complicated stuff going on here, and that's exactly the point. The chord changes are deliberate and repetitive, just like the best space rock. There is a certain emotional presence to this album that is hard to describe; perhaps it's the soundtrack to the longest rainy evening ever. Some of the best music is made from simple, carefully crafted building blocks, and Duster certainly know what they're doing. I should note that this album is, in my opinion, better than their second album (Contemporary Movement). This is not to say that Contemporary Movement is bad -- far from it; it's actually quite good; it's simply not as brilliant as this album.

    5 out of 5 stars Low fi-noise genius.......2000-02-21

Depressing as hell. I loved it

3 out of 5 stars Good But Scattershot.......2000-01-20

This album reminded me of all the wonderful things inspired bands can do with something as simple as a 4-track. The songs are extremely hypnotic, and some (like "Echo, Bravo" and "Earth Moon Transit") are not as "Slowcore" as critics would have you believe. My only complaint is that they end too soon. Track #1, for example, fades out just as its screechy weirdness and drum beat start to get interesting. Duster would have done well to cut a few items off this album's 17-song menu in order give their best compositions more room to breathe.

    5 out of 5 stars outer-space masterpiece.......1999-06-24

an inspiring trip into the world of lo-fi indie rock. the songs on this record are done mostly using a four track and give almost a vintage feel to it. the music is mellow and spacy with soothing vocals spread out sparingly over the cd. this is the perfect record for you next trip through the universe.

This CD is VERY cheesy. The synth sounds are very MIDI, and sound so amateur. I bought this CD because I saw it on the attack 9 website, and I love both Freescha and Casino vs Japan. I assure you, this CD is nowhere near the caliber of those two. I only gave it two stars because some of the beats are decent. Other than that, I can say I will never listen to it again.
