4 out of 5 stars Life story?.......2007-06-26

I only gave "Third Stage" 4 stars because it's not long enough, darn it!!! That being said, I absolutely love this album. I remember buying the tape in [...]and playing it until it had that quavery, metallic sound that, unfortunately, the kids of today will probably never hear. Ah, nostalgia...

Anyway, while listening to "Third Stage," I felt like I was experiencing the memories of Tom and Brad and the rest of the Boston guys. Especially through Hollyann. Now that I'm getting a little older, I can't help but look back on the days of my youth through, if not rose-colored glasses, at least the watery, smooth and blurred finish of an impressionist painting. With Hollyann, I can almost see the couple standing proudly, hair flying in the breeze, perhaps watching the setting sun and standing for what they believed so strongly.

On the other side, Amanda, To Be a Man and Still In Love seem to be, partly, about the struggle to do right over wrong, to fight for love and for those you love.

Beauty, fun, introspection, love, sacrifice... the stuff of life. Also, the stuff of "Third Stage." If you like the unique Boston sound, "Third Stage" is a must-have for your CD case. Although, I still have my tape!!

5 out of 5 stars C'Mon It's Boston Third Stage, it's a gimmie.......2007-06-09

C.D. is amazing. One that even my 15 year of child said, "Wow, who's that?" Don't want to say timeless, but it has the potential.
Amazon delivered quickly and in good shaped.
Would recommed to family and friends.

5 out of 5 stars Third time is the charm.......2007-05-07

A successful lawsuit against CBS records and two mediocre recordings from Boston alumnus Barry Gourdreau later, Tom Scholz and Brad Delp stormed back onto the 1986 singles chart with Amanda, Third Stage's first single and lead off song. It took seven years to get this album released, but the delay was worth it, 40 minutes of beautifully crafted pop-rock, from Amanda's opening chords on the acoustic guitar to the soaring electric on Cool the Engines to the elegiac finale of Hollyann. If you want to purchase only essential Boston material, get Third Stage plus the first two albums and you'll have the absolute best of Boston - or anyone even remotely associated with Boston.

5 out of 5 stars A True Concept Album that was well worth the wait .......2007-04-13

In the late 1970s, as a result of the success of their first two albums, "Boston" established themselves as one of the premier bands in the Rock industry. I would even go as far to say that with the momentum they achieved with their debut album "Boston" (still one of the most successful debuts in history) and "Don't Look Back", that they might become the successors in Rock's line of royalty to Led Zeppelin (following the disintegration as a result of John Bonham's death). However, the problems that would ensue would completely derail this road for Boston. The 1980s would see the breakdown of the original lineup of the band and legal battles that would delay any future work by the band. By the Fall of 1986, the band found themselves in a very different position - the comeback position. This comeback would mark the launch of Boston's third album - "Third Stage". For fans of the band who had waited 8 years for the album, they would not be disappointed. The band assembles a terrific concept album that doesn't miss a beat.

For the most part, I consider Boston to be the partnership of guitarist Tom Scholz and vocalist (the late) Brad Delp. Boston had a stable lineup for their first two albums. In addition to Scholz and Delp were Sib Hashian, bassist Fran Sheehan, and guitarist Barry Goudreau. "Third Stage" would not include Hashian, Sheehan, or Goudreau. This was a result of a falling out the band had in the 1980s. Replacing Hashian on drums would be Jim Masdea (who played drums prior to the debut album) and Gary Pihl would pick up the void on guitars. However the partnership of Scholz and Delp was good enough to keep the Boston sound going. While Scholz often gets most of the creative credit for Boston, I really feel it is the unique vocals of Brad Delp that give Boston its edge. I always contend you can find another Tom Scholz on guitar, but there was only one Brad Delp on vocals. It was no surprise that "Third Stage"'s follow-up "Walk On" failed because Delp wasn't on that album. It is no surprise that Boston's career is currently in limbo (at the time of this writing) due to Delp's untimely death.

The nice thing about "Third Stage" is that it does integrate a loose concept theme around most of the tracks. It uses an analogy of the setting sail on a spaceship to someone maturing by reaching thirtysomething in age. The album reflects the maturity that a man hits when he reaches his 30s. While not all of the songs use the spaceship theme, the songs in one form or another reflect this maturity in age. It's not just the songwriting that is good, the musicianship of the band and powerful vocals of Brad Delp really are in top form.

One important note to make is that most of these songs were written in the early 1980s. The amazing thing is that Boston did not use synthesizers for this album. This is amazing for two reasons: 1) Even though it sounds like there is a synthesizer component, there isn't (Organs, pianos, and the Hammond G-5 help to fill the gap left by the synthesizer); 2) The idea of abandoning the synthesizer was more of a late 1980s trend (i.e. 1987 onward), yet Boston conceptualized most of "Third Stage" in the early 1980s. One must give Boston some points in creative and innovative thinking in the music industry for going with this trend early.

The Spaceship concept occurs on tracks 2 through 8. On track 2, "We're Ready" the spaceship might be getting ready to launch, but Boston actually is talking about one taking the next step in a relationship. Track 3 is an instrumental called the "The Launch" - it is divided into 3 parts (Countdown, Ignition, and Third Stage Separation). The music does sound like a spaceship launching. Once launched, on track 4, the spaceship will "Cool the Engines", but this is referring to calming down from one's younger days. On track 5, the spaceship arrives at "My Destination". "My Destination" might be the most powerful track on the collection. Most people are familiar with the radio-friendly power-ballad, "Amanda" - which is the first track on the album. "My Destination" is a different spin on "Amanda" - and overall I find it a better song. Delp's vocals are even stronger than "Amanda". This song deals with arriving at "my destination ... by your side" in a relationship. This again reflects maturity.

Tracks 6, 7, and 8 continue the spaceship theme. "A New World" is a very short instrumental, but refers to exploring the new world that the spaceship set sail to. Perhaps this is also the maturity of one in life. On Track 7, "To Be a Man", the person who set sail now must prove he is a man in his new world. This can also be reflected to everyday life as well. Finally track 8, "I Think I Like It", refers to the person enjoying the new world he set sail to, but also reflective of liking the changes in his life.

While Track 9 "Can'tcha Say"doesn't fit into this theme of setting sail on a spaceship, it might be the best track. It consists of two tracks - the powerful, hard-rocking, "Can'tcha Say" with a segue to the powerful power-ballad "Still in Love". The titles of these songs describe what these songs are about. Fusing these songs together really works. This "double trrack" is my favorite track on any Boston album. Delp's amazing vocals contribute to the power of this track. There is also the tenth track, "Hollyann" - this is a nice track as well.

The liner notes contain not only the lyrics, but notes on each track and notes on the making of the album. This is a great album - not a bad track in the whole lot. Highly recommended.

This is my third copy of this production over the years. Need I say more?

5 out of 5 stars Capture the essence of a live show!.......2007-06-03

No matter how long you've been listening to RBF, this album is sure to please. With awesome recordings and live antics, it appeals to any kind of listener

For older fans, it showcases their best work, with fresh recordings and pleasurable stylized versions of songs. These unique performances give a variety to those who already own the original CDs, and make the purchase worth it.

For new listeners, it invites you to see the breadth of their work. And, like a live show, it builds as it goes on, so listeners are encouraged to listen through to the end. This compelling nature of each track leading to another gives their music a great, fresh feel.

For the low cost of this album, and the immense length of it (over 3.5 hours), including a DVD with an entire show, make this a great deal all around. I can't think of another live album I've enjoyed so much.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!.......2007-05-08

Best RBF album yet. Hilarious and great music. A must for any RBF fan or any human actually.

5 out of 5 stars Their best live album!.......2007-04-10

Fans of Reel big fish and fans of ska and the like, rejoice. Finally Reel big fish released a live album. Giving people the chance to experience the magic of RBF live. Although it still doesn't beat going to their show, it gives you a nice look of what they have to offer. Especially (The many versions of) S.R. gives me the feeling of standing in front of a stage where they go and have fun with music.

A must have for fans of Reel big fish and a recommendation for everyone who loves ska or just music in particular.

5 out of 5 stars If you like hepped-up ska. . . ........2007-04-10

. . .this album is for you. Few live albums catch the true feel of a band in the concert hall, but this one does. I've seen RBF live, and this CD (with bonus DVD) does one of the best jobs of replicating the experience. Okay, I'll admit, Aaron and Scott's "witty" banter gets a little annoying at times (damn, need the Tivo for music), but the energy of the songs makes it worth putting up with. This band like few others know how to engage an audience in a show, and the CD captures that experience as best as is possible. No ska band playing today can match their horns (sorry, Bosstones fans). Don't miss the chance to catch RBF live, but if you can't do that (and even if you do), this is the next best thing to being there and having the F-bombs dropped on you in person.

5 out of 5 stars It kicked my @$$.......2007-04-04

This is the best CD i have ever purchased. It sounds awesome for having been recorded live and the diolouge is pretty entertaining and just fun to listen to. 2 CDs and a dvd for 15 bucks its a steal! seriously if you even kinda sorta like ska youll effen love this cd. Its an andvanced cd so it doesnt play on older cd players...like mine. I just ripped it to my comp and then burned it and that seemed an easy way around that. realy this is an amazing album.

In the afterglow of capturing a Dove award for "Rock album of the year" with their southern-rock grinder Time, Third Day has now stepped in line with the worship movement and released Offerings: A Worship Album. Interspersed among five new songs, this album contains several live concert tracks, including the favorite "Your Love, Oh Lord." Even though the new songs demonstrate Third Day's superior creativity and talent, the live tracks are the forte of this project. The undulating dynamics exhibit the band's unity as they work together to create a singular response to the Savior. As well, some of the tracks incorporate the sound of the worshiping audience, adding a congregational feel to the album. The lyrical content is similar to that of songs from a typical Sunday morning service. But these traditional expressions of faith are given new life by the resonating fervor of Mac Powell's lead vocal style. Third Day is known for being uncompromisingly God-centered with their music. This project uncovers that quality to its most extreme degree. --Israel Button

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Praise AND great guitar riffs!!.......2007-07-06

Love this album!! My favorite is Consuming Fire! I want to take guitar lessons just to learn the opening hook alone! I wish it were part of the Amazon sample so that new listeners of Third Day could hear it! But the sample lyrics the Amazon people chose to play is why Third Day rocks!

You'd have to be dead both literally and physically not to be moved by the Spirit behind this album. Hearing it in concert with the volume cranked really high takes you right to the crowded front row of the concert. How can you not raise your hands high in worship to this powerful and moving album?

"Thief" chokes me up EVERY time! The visuals you get while listening will stir your soul.

GREAT BAND - GREAT ALBUM - GREAT GOD!

4 out of 5 stars Rocky Live Worship with a Hidden Song.......2007-06-20

Normally I (age 35) prefer acoustic type praise like the first free worship CD from "Firefighters for Christ", but this album is starting to grow on me. Most of the songs are great, especially the hidden one, "Don't Let Me Go". It is located after a long 2 minute pause at the end of the "Love Song" track. Here are the Lyrics:

Don't Let Me Go (hidden track)
by Mark Lee, ©2000/
Take my heart and help me feel
Take my faith and make it real
Take my eyes and help me see all the love surrounding me/
Don't let me go
Hold me close to where you are
Don't let me go/
Take my heart take all of me
Take my loss and take my gain
Take my trial and take my pain
Take my life and let it be all that you have for me (end)

Most of the doctrine seems sound. Without the overbearing electric guitar, audience noise, band intro talking and 2 minute pause, it would be a 5 star CD.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff..........2006-06-13

I'm not a huge Third Day fan, and I find the worship album genre to be totally saturated. However, this album emerges near the top.

Quite frankly, I find just about every song on this recording to be memorable. My personal favorites are "All the Heavens" and "Love Song," which wrap things up admirably.

The live nature of several of the tracks are great, as we experience some of the beauty of a Third Day concert. (I saw them in concert years ago and found that experience to be much better than any of their other recordings besides this one.)

Third Day chose songs for this worship album with great spiritual depth, outstanding musical diversity, and great technical skill. And Mac Powell's voice is fantastic, as always.

If I could only choose one worship album for my collection, this one would certainly be in the running!!

5 out of 5 stars Not your Grandma's worship album.......2006-04-07

I love Third Day, and this album, while a different feel from their other, more "rock" cds is fantastic. I love worship music that doesn't feel drippy or trite, and this is it. From the beautiful "Love Song" to the powerful remake of "Agnus Dei" and the great cover of Dylan's "Saved" this is a picture perfect modern rock CD. The song "Thief", basically a narrative of the repentant man on the cross next to Jesus is very thought-provoking and moving, and don't miss the hidden track at the end.

5 out of 5 stars A CD I Keep Going Back To Hear.......2006-04-03

I love Third Day and, of all their CDs, this is the one I keep putting in the car stereo. I just saw them a couple of weeks ago on their current tour and they played several songs from this CD (my favorites are "Consuming Fire" and the one they said was their most-requested song, "Thief").

This is worship on a stadium-sized scale.

(A note about the one-star review below by Joseph Izzo: of the almost two-dozen reviews he's written, he trashes other CCM artists with the same sentence pushing Neal Burse. I don't know who Neal is...but he might want to check into an order of protection....)

3 out of 5 stars Remaster vs Original CD.......2007-03-27

I've just bought four remastered ELOs, and already compared two of them, new Out Of The Blue was clearly worst in every aspect. This edition is almost identical to the original CD EXCEPT that it is COMPRESSED!!! WHY? Digital era made almost all producers wanting to sound louder, rock mixing doesn't have a standard loudness as movies. So each decade albums are more and more compressed and less and less musical. As an example, ending of first song (King...) has some pizzicato at peaking at -15db, new version is at -10db (5db louder), so dynamic range has been lost. All pianissimos are loud. Musicality has been lost because of this, I'm afraid all new remaster editions has been heavily compressed.
Original CDs editions have a very good sound quality, I would stick to those versions unless you want bonus tracks.
I give 2.5 stars, 4 because of the music and 1 for poor mastering.

5 out of 5 stars A Complete Experience -- Fantastic Remastering.......2007-03-24

You can hear Lynne's vision coming together on this album, as near a complete album experience as I've heard in a while. This record was meant to be listened to as "sides" (boy I'm really dating myself now) and each one is a truly complete listening experience. The combination of Beatles harmonies, sounds, and melodies, great rock guitar, grand orchestration, tight backbeats, and sci-fi and other esoteric themes, all come together in a very satisfying package.

Highlights for me include the incredible "Bluebird is Dead," with its smart "Tomorrow Never Knows" guitar loops (this song was recently covered by Todd Rundgren for a Jeff Lynne tribute album). followed by some of Jeff's best John Lennon-style singing on "Oh No Not Susan." The great "Showdown" has one of the tastiest guitar breaks on record, and side 2, while more instrumental and experimental, is equally as enjoyable.

The new remastering brings out the depth and dimensions in the music -- the buried sounds, the dense instrumentation, the really rock solid rhythm section -- it's all good, and it sounds great.

But I do have to comment on the bonus tracks. Not only are they not essential, in my view they mar the listening experience. Do we need two additional versions of "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle" after the gentle, prog-like release of the final album track, the instrumental reworking of "In the Hall of the Mountain King"? I say no thanks. I did enjoy the very Blonde-on-Blondish sounding bonus track "Everyone's Born to Die," I just think it should not have been tacked on to such a great, complete record. And the final noodling track adds absolutely nothing, in my opinion.

That shouldn't discourage anyone from picking this up, every serious music fan should own it.

5 out of 5 stars Creating The Sound They Are Known For.......2007-02-13

On this 3rd day of creation, their 3rd album, the fusion of Beatle era pop with strings Ala Magical Mystery Tour and the studio wizardry all comes into it's own as this distinctive important band put it together creating their trademark sound with their successful followups all unmistakable ELO.
A real sonic treat, not to be missed..from The pop of the classic Move, into the 1st ELO albums highbrow eccentric sound, into the longer pieced subdued ELO 2 (with the great rocker Roll Over Beethoven) came this benchmark followed by the lush majestic Eldorado and the followups.

2 out of 5 stars WORTH A LISTEN.......2007-01-27

I say worth a listen if you are a hardcore, buy everything ELO fan, but for beginners who are just starting to listen to ELO, this is an easy pass. Granted the re-mastering sound is great and there are parts of this album I do kind of enjoy, but I find most of it hard to ingest. I can't really seem to want to listen to the album as a whole, just parts of it. Giving it 2 stars may be a little harsh. It's not a bad album or horrible by any means. But it's just about average at best for me. I guess I just prefer that soon to come ELO sound after this. But it is worth a listen. Maybe give it try, you may like it better than I did.

5 out of 5 stars on the third day.......2007-01-16

elo is a very good band. im still looking forward to the next release of the last two albums.

3 out of 5 stars Barbra not "taking a chance".......2007-06-22

Barbra Streisand's first two albums had a spontaneity to them, not only with her singing and making standards out of lesser-known or unusual songs. On this album, as opposed to her taking risks with her material, she seems to play is safe more, recording more well-known standards.

As always, she sings the songs absolutely beautifully, making this album a very pleasant listening experience. However, unlike the first two recordings, in which not only does Barbra sing with great soul that many R & B singers would love to express, but she also shows a lot of her personality, making the song hers. In this case, she sounds rather cold and distant. She makes no effort to liven up or put meaning into the songs, almost as if she is intimidated by the material.

Don't be mistaken, Barbra pulls of many of the standards, with "Taking a Chance on Love" being the best example, and as previously said, has one of the greatest singing voices recorded, but this album misses the pizazz of the other recordings, making this album less essential. Of course, if you are a Barbra fan and/or completest, this recording is a must, but if not, you may want to think twice.

4 out of 5 stars a softer Barbra.......2007-03-20

'The Third Album' saw Barbra Streisand exploring the softer side of her voice and personality. While her two previous albums virtually defined brass and sass, Miss Bab's third platter revealed how limitless her appeal was in the quieter numbers, too.

Among the best cuts are "Taking a Chance on Love" (from "Cabin in the Sky"), "Draw Me a Circle", and "It Had to Be You". "Make Believe" (from "Showboat") also glitters with Barbra's rendition. The slow, deliberate arrangement of "Bewitched" (from "Pal Joey") suits Barbra's phrasing to a tee. "Just in Time" (from "Bells Are Ringing") features a special Leonard Bernstein arrangement, written as a wedding present for his good friends Adolph Green and Phyllis Newman.

The vocal quality of Barbra is more refined here, too. Gone was the hard-edged belt from her earlier albums, and in it's place a cooly controlled timbre. Barbra had well and truly mastered her art.

Under the guidance of music arranger Peter Matz (with contributions by Ray Ellis, Peter Daniels and Sid Ramin), 'The Third Album' is still one of the best in the Streisand catalogue.

5 out of 5 stars THE BARBRA STREISAND MUSICAL THEATRE ANTHOLOGY (a compilation of theatre songs by Barbra Streisand).......2006-03-01

Barbra Streisand has sung hundreds of Broadway and musical theatre songs, yet she has never issued an anthology of Musical
Theatre Songs. It's not mere chance that she was given a special
Tony Award around 1970 for her contribution to the Broadway Musical. Many of the songs in Barbra Streisand's Lps and Cds
come from the musical theatre, but many times were not properly
credited on the record label, just limiting the information to
the name of the composer.
We, Barbra Streisand fans, demand now a MUSICAL THEATRE ANTHOLOGY
that will include all recordings by Barbra Streisand related to the musical stage.
This is Barbra Streisand's fifth released lp in February 1964.
THE THIRD ALBUM. BARBRA STREISAND. There are 7 songs in this
album related to the musical theatre. They are as follows:
-Just in time, from the musical BELLS ARE RINGING, which opened
on November 29th, 1956. Music: Jule Styne
Lyrics: Betty Comden, Adolph Green
-Taking a chance on love, from the musical CABIN IN THE SKY,
which opened on October 25th, 1940.
Music: Vernon Duke
Lyrics: John Latouche/Ted Fetter
-Bewitched, bothered and bewildered, from the musical PAL JOEY,
which opened on December 25th, 1940.
Music: Richard Rodgers
Lyrics: Lorenz Hart
-Never will I marry, from the musical GREENWILLOW, which opened
on March 8th, 1960.
Music and lyrics: Frank Loesser
-As time goes by, from the musical EVERYBODY'S WELCOME, which
opened on October 13th, 1931.
Music and Lyrics: Herman Hupfeld
-Make believe, from the musical SHOWBOAT, which opened on December 27th, 1927.
Music: Jerome Kern
Lyrics: Oscar Hammerstein II
-I had myself a true love, from the musical ST. LOUIS WOMAN,
which opened on March 30th, 1946.
Music: Harold Arlen
Lyrics: Johnny Mercer
These 7 songs should be included in THE BARBRA STREISAND MUSICAL
THEATRE ANTHOLOGY, under shows which opened in 1927, 1931, 1940,
1946, 1956, and 1960. All shows should be listed in chronological
order, that is, the year in which the show first opened. This way
we get a panoramic view of how songs from the musical theatre
changed over the course of the 20th century. Let's get SONY
interested in releasing a BARBRA STREISAND MUSICAL THEATRE ANTHOLOGY. This idea is my gift to Barbra, who has provided us
with so much pleasure over many decades. Let's make this idea a
reality.

5 out of 5 stars La Streisand in her prime!.......2006-01-23

This is where to start if you are interested in hearing Barbra Streisand in her prime in the early 1960s.

The best songs on this delightfully warm album are "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered", "Taking A Chance On Love", "It Had To Be You", and last, but not least, "As Time Goes By".

This album is much smoother and softer than her first two outstanding albums, but the full-force of the talent of Streisand is all there!

I own many of her albums, but this is by far my favorite!

4 out of 5 stars Barbra Streisand: The Third Album (1964).......2005-08-18

In March of 1964, Barbra Streisand released her third album simply titled, THE THIRD ALBUM. Just as the first two, this album gets four stars from me. The album is not that bad. If it was, I'd be giving 1 or 2 stars. Giving it four stars means I liked it and I'll explain why.

MY MELANCHOLY BABY
Always liked this.

JUST IN TIME
Not bad.

TAKING A CHANCE ON LOVE
Not bad.

BEWITCHED (BOTHERED & BEWILDERED)
There's something about this song that I truly like. In 2002 or 2003, Rod Stewart had recorded this song as a duet with Cher.

NEVER WILL I MARRY
Not bad.

AS TIME GOES BY
Not bad.

DRAW ME A CIRCLE
Not bad.

IT HAD TO BE YOU
This song is also to my liking. I loved seeing this performed in the film, "A League Of Their Own", by the actress who plays, Marla Hooch in that film.

MAKE BELIEVE
Great.

I HAD MYSELF A TRUE LOVE
Great.

THE THIRD ALBUM is not a bad album, believe me. But Barbra's voice is just absolutely outstanding. I know that every fan here would agree with me. Anyway, this album does deserve to be in every fan's collection. So, make sure to buy a copy for yourselves.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing album by an amazing band.......2006-06-20

This album fundamentally redefined how I listen to music.

The year was 2000 or so, and my musical taste at the time consisted of Wierd Al and whatever heavy rock I could get my hands on. I panned horns and other non-guitar instruments as being boring and passe. I was a little idiot.

And then my friend excitedly sent me an MP3 of a song called Every New Day. I didn't get around to listening to it for a few days, but when I did, I couldn't stop listening. I raced over to Napster and downloaded as much of this band as I could get my hands on. Later I bought this album, along with everything else they produced. Today I listen to music from all different genres, with all sorts of instruments, and it's all Five Iron Frenzy's fault.

THe music is lyrically smart and catchy, and all the players play their parts very well. If I have a complaint, it's that you can't hear Jeff The Girl's sax very much. She blends in too much with the Trombone and Trumpet. I would recommend this album for anyone at all.

5 out of 5 stars O Canada ROCKS.......2006-04-25

Never heard of these guys till 3 days ago, but I had been sung O Canada nearly every night my friend and I attened our hockey games. She finally found the CD and let me borrow it. And man O Canada is AWESOME!

Not only is their music amazing but the lyrics are great, funny when they need to be and just catchy enough to get even not Chrisitian rock band fans into the music.

Love this band already, and can't get O Canada out of my heads (my Canadaian hockey player friends are gonna hate me.... THANKS FIF)

5 out of 5 stars My all time favorite song.......2006-02-15

There is no doubt, Every New Day is my favorite song ever written. It has been for the last 4 years, and I expect it will always hold that special place in my heart. Of course, that isn't the only good song on that CD. In fact, this CD probly contains more of my favorite songs than any other 2 CDs. Some of their best! You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible,Ska+Originality, best of the Aquabats!.......2004-11-27

Well I picked this cd up last after all of the other three aquabats albums, and I was very surprised. The sound made me want to get up and dance. This cd is very short and more of a ska dance feel, it's classic. Many people disagree when I say this cd is there best, there are only ten songs but Playdough and CD Repo Man are so good plus the fact that Idiot Box and Martian Girl are originally from this cd makes them even more fun to listen to, this cd is essential for Aquabats fans and a ska fan.

Playdough- So catchy! Better than Super Rad. 10/10
Martian Girl- Long, 2nd best song about a Martian. 7/10
Ska Robot Army- A great song! Makes me want to party. 7/10
Idiot Box- Excellent. Slower than the remake but still great.8/10
Pinch & Roll- Wow! Hilarious and a good ska raggae feel. 9/10
Tarantula- A little repetitive but still funny and decent. 7/10
Marshmellow Man- Another great song, sound like the Toasters.8/10
Aquabat March- The only track I occasionaly skip, still ok. 5/10
CD Repo Man- Best on the cd, one of the best Aquabats songs.10/10
It's Crazy,Man! Another great song on the cd, fast and fun. 9/10

As you will see all of these songs on the cd are very high rated with one exception. You probably think I'm just rating these songs high because I just like the Aquabats, well if you don't beleive me then check my other review for the Fury Of the Aquabats or just buy the cd, trust me it's there best.

4 out of 5 stars Evildoers beware...........2004-09-14

Everyone's favorite ska superheroes burst onto the scene with this debut album and it's obvious from the start that they are one of a kind. The album offers up 10 ridiculously catchy ska anthems about, well, basically nothing, but who cares? With songs as infectiously silly as "Pinch And Roll," who needs deep meaning? This is a great CD, but it pales in comparison to their second work, "Fury Of The Aquabats," which contains revised versions of a few of the best songs here. But for fans of the Aquabats, this is a classic CD.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Debut Effort!.......2003-10-02

As always, The Aquabats have a style unlike any others. They have an excellent sense of humor and don't take themselves too seriously. Their songs themselves are also very catchy.

5 out of 5 stars BlossomBat, Aquacadet extraordinaire.......2002-04-22

I love this CD... it is really the best ska cd to have been released in a really long time... NOt only does the music rock, but the bats themselves are super rad.. I met most of them at a concert, along with aaron brackett of reel big fish, but anyways umm for the people who like the bats I suggest you visit their cool website... and become an Aquacadet!!!! its very cool.... oh and this cd has all the classics like martain girl, playdough (which is the best song on the album) Cd Repo Man, Tarantula, just a lot of great songs.... The Bats also do the themesong for a new show on cartoon network, but I forgot the name... All in all I highly recomend this cd and every other cd buy this group... They are the greatest Band EVER!!!!...

5 out of 5 stars BE OPEN MINDED AND TRY THIS CD!.......1999-11-24

This CD is GREAT. A friend of mine, Stevie, suggested this CD, because she told me it was her favorite band. I never even heard of the band before that. NOW It's my new favorite band. It consists of a unique type of music. I can only describe it as, maybe ska, punk, and some comedy. But, really it's neither, because it's better! TRY IT! I GUARANTEE YOU, YOU WILL LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars BLUESMAN JOHNNY WINTER PLAYS A VARIETY OF BLUES ! (and it's awesome).......2007-06-20

Seasoned Texas bluesman Johnny Winter has really given us blues fans (and JW fans) a real gift with his 1986 album 3rd Degree. This album is pure blues from start to finish, in various blues styles and settings. Johnny was 42 years old when this album was released, and he sounds as good or better than he ever has. The first song, Mojo Boogie is electric slide guitar boogie and sounds perfect. Love, Life, And Money is minor key, slow blues, with Johnny's blazing guitar and world-weary vocals. This stuff is authentic blues, people. Mr. Winter is not just a student of the blues, the man lives it, and you can hear the proof right here in these songs. He goes acoustic, playing his National steel guitar (including slide) on Evil On My Mind and Bad Girl Blues, and acoustic blues has never sounded better than this! See See Baby, I'm Good, and Broke And Lonely are all faster uptempo blues, sounding almost like the rock n' roll Johnny used to play in the early 1970s with his band, Johnny Winter And. Shake Your Money Maker features more electric slide guitar. The title track is down and dirty slow blues, and like every other song on this superb album, it is awesome. This is the real thing, blues from a master bluesman, in a variety of settings, with friends like Dr. John stopping by to help out. If you like the blues, this is Blues 101 with Johnny Winter teaching the course!

5 out of 5 stars Johnny at his Best.......2007-01-03

If you like the blues and when the name Johnny Winters comes up you think of him as a bluesman that tinkered with rock for awhile, then you will not be disapointed with this CD, this is one of his best, great guitar work, great lyrics, mixed well. This is true JW blues guitar at its best.

5 out of 5 stars feeble , old man?.......2006-02-04

I just read a review of this album which was written in 2000 and it described johnny as a feeble old man in concert. It is now 6 years later and he is on a nationwide tour. I was planning to take a roadtrip to pittsburgh to see him in April. I now have doubts about this. Can someone who has seen him on this tour tell me if he is worth seeing at this stage of his life?

5 out of 5 stars rapid fire blues!.......2004-08-18

Everything about this gem from Johnny Winter is utterly superb!
Firstly, the cover is magnificent. It says it ALL. The music contained is beyond comparison, you gain the sense of commoraderie amongst the musicians and they really seem to be enthusiastically involved . Every track is blindingly good. There's an updated version of "Broke & Lonely", a song which he first did way back in the very early '60s. Winters version of Eddie Boyds "Third Degree" is the best version ever done. "Mojo Boogie" blazes from start to finish. Johnny is supported by a tour-de-force band which includes Dr. John on piano. The slow blues songs on here really burn with intensity-- Thankfully by 1984 Johnny had quit using the annoying "phaser'sound that he employed on many of his recordings although he did still use the device on live concerts. The guitar tone for this c.d. is pure and clear.
Some of you may not like extended guitar solos...but not me, especially when it's Johnny Winter. As far as i'm concerned he can make the solos last all day long.
Buy this one. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Soberb disc.......2003-06-14

Johnny Winter is only the best at blues style...His rough voice, his ultra blazing fast solos, his feeling and his slide tecnique made him a lengedary guitarrist from the last century to nowadays...

If you can, buy everything from him...each disc is a gem, and worth any cent paid on it. This 3rd degree is the best one! Don't even think of losing it! Buy, buy, buy. Nothing more to say.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars good rock and roll.......2007-07-11

My parents had Rock and Roll Alternative in their record collection for years, and today I finally listened to it.

"Sky High" has a great fast-paced chorus with wonderful guitar work. Judging from a few of the hit songs that occasionally receive radio play even to this day, I didn't know the band focused on writing some exciting guitar solos. The jam at the end of this track is great. This style of songwriting pleasantly caught me by surprise. The next two tracks also have really good guitar playing. It's surprising to me that it's not so much the "rhythm section" that's catching my attention- it's more their brief but melodic guitar solos.

"Georgia Rhythm" is a great country-sounding song with a nice chorus. Everybody knows "So In To You" with its groovy rhythm and spooky vocal melody. The song feels a bit out of place compared to the rest of the album, I admit. "Outside Woman Blues" is mainly interesting for the electric blues riff that pops out between the vocal melody and the excellent guitar playing at the end of the song.

"Everybody Gotta Go" is the only other song on the record that has a really good rhythm (remember, since the band is called Atlanta "Rhythm" Section, I'm searching for neat rhythms!) "Neon Nights" is a beautiful Poco-sounding number. Turning the song into a soft jam after the halfway point was an interesting move. Really good song off a really good album. The guitar playing is fantastic the whole way through. What a shame the band isn't remembered as much today compared to Poco or the Allman Brothers Band. Buy this album today.

This is a GREAT disc. I had the R and R Alternative on vinyl years ago and must worn it out at least 5 times. Great stuff.
Thanks for the memories and music!!!!

5 out of 5 stars At last!.......2005-08-02

I have been waiting since the compact disk was created back in the early 80's. The quailty is great and so is the packaging. I have Dog Days/Red Tape on order and expect the same quality. Now all we need is Underdog and The Boys from Doraville to be combined by Gott to complete the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Remastered Sound; Nice Package.......2005-04-29

Good job by GottDiscs on the rerelease of these classic albums. Please give the same red-carpet treatment to the rest of the bands catalogue. As far as the tracks, if your reading this review, you're well aware of the southern rock meets steely dan fusion of Atlanta Rhythm Section. Enjoy because lead vocalist Ronnie Hammond called it quits a couple of years back and their new touring vocalist just can't recapture the magic.

4 out of 5 stars Great CPD.......2007-01-10

Great Cherry Poppin' Daddies. An eclectic mix -- as usual. With this kind of variety, you may not like every tune -- but, you're bound to find something new you like, if your a CPD fan.

5 out of 5 stars if you really love music..............2005-12-17

the daddies are for you. i am lucky enough to own all of their work and with the exception of ferociously stoned (their first release), they are all awesome. this is my #1 favorite cd out of all their work. an adventure in musical styles, you will be surprised with every song.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD... seriously........2002-01-23

Everything I was ever looking for in music, I found in Rapid City Muscle Car. Skyline Drive is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. It is probably the most diverse album you can get and all of the musicians are as talanted as they come. I picked up the CD in an obscure shop on a vacation in Virginia, and it really is all I can remember about the trip. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't saying that Virginia was borning, that's just how powerful this album was. Okay maybe a little boring...
Do yourself a favor and pick this one up, or at least listen to the samples. All of them.

5 out of 5 stars CPD is the best band ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-10-24

The Cherry Poppin Daddies are a wonderful band. I really like this CD. Infact out of the four it is my favorite. It has all different kinds of music. The Lyrics are touching. As I said it before they are a wonderful band!

5 out of 5 stars this cd w/o a doubt receives a 5 from me~.......1999-10-17

ok, well, i heard zoot suit riot on the radio, went out and bought the cd. I LOVED IT. so a couple of months later I bought this one, "rapid city muscle car." Quite frankly, i didn't like it. I put it away for a while. When I started to like rock and ska more, I got it back out and started listening to it. I listened to some of the tracks, grew to love some of them, avoided the rest. Then one day, I was in a, well, mood, where I just put it on, and well, more of the songs grew on me. I listened to the entire CD every day, just lettin' it run, u know. I started to learn the words and started to feel the music, and the great, let me stress that, GREAT, lyrics, got me to thinkin' this ain't no ordinary band. I would start singing in school, it was to the point where I would wanna go home just to listen to it!(if i wasn't doing anything more useful than sittin' at a friends house) I mean I have not bought a full length CD in like a year, besides the CPD! why u ask? because I didn't need to! I mean i bought singles and everything but this CD, and the Zoot Suit Riot CD have kept me goin' for like a year and a half now. So let me tell you ppl who came to read my review, if you think this cd is swing, well it is a little, but if you're like me and all you lived for was swing, consider this cd the revolution in your life. it sure changed me, and i guarantee you it'll change you- It got your swing, some rock, punk, ska, even a touch o' country. no matter, you'll love it, so buy it.
