As Basil Bunting wrote about Ezra Pound's Cantos, "There are the Alps... you will have to go a long way round/if you want to avoid them." Led Zeppelin's work is the central fact of 1970s rock & roll; in its loving homage to and shameless piracy from the blues, its glorious and wretched excess, its transformation of hippie and folk-rock graces into a foundation-shaking kaboom, and its offhanded myth-making, the band turned everything caught in its wake into a reaction to it--or against it. The three non-album tracks the box includes are grace notes rather than lost jewels, but the point of the set is to be a Rosetta stone of album rock, the stairway to a gaudy paradise that they constructed. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
Your one-stop Zep shop!.......2007-05-01
I got this because after all the years of playing just made my vinyl too noisy to convert to CD, and at around average cost of $9 a CD (it's a 9 album 10 CD set), it would have cost me at least $8-9 per CD plus shipping. The way the CD's are in a sleeve (like the albums were) was kind of neat, and the storage case keeps all the CD packaging in one spot with the booklet. Also that 2 CD's are in each "album" is an innovative packaging idea and it has everything that each LP had as far as artwork goes. I would suggest to any Zep fan that doesn't have a lot of their CD's go this route as it will save you money in the long run. And the re-masters sound great. A few of the bonus tracks on the "CODA" CD are pretty decent, but the fact you can get all their studio stuff new for under $100 I think is awesome!
Glorious that just doesn't cut it, Speechless is more like it........2007-03-07
These guys are the masters, the reigning kings of Hard Rock. Every gem is in this box set. Granduer, awesomeness and epic could be a couple of words to describe this box set, all I've got to say is buy it for your self, it will change your life. There was a time when I lost my job and I had to sell most of my record collection to make ends meet. Out of my whole collection I wouldn't give this up. This set got me through that peroid and also got me through other tough peroids in my life.
This box set chronciles the bands starting, up to its monarch like ascent and then to its fall when Bonzo died. All the albums are here in a 10 Box Set. Dazed and Confused, Ramble On, Misty Mountain Hop, Black Dog, Rock n'Roll, Stairway To Heavan, Achille's Last Stand, Candy Shop Rock, Kashmir, and Ozone Baby all those juicy bits are here a song for each mood. Led Zep's influences are easily seen here, garage rock, psychedelia, progressive, Rockabilly, country and of course the greatest influence the Blues. I often wonder if there is in any truth in the myth the band sold their souls to the Dark One because such mind numbing talent is almost beyond the pale of reality. I'm telling you get this set no music lover will be disapponited. Absolutely Awesome. Has 4 bonus tracks never released "Baby Come On Home", "Travelling Riverside Blues", "White Summer/Black Mountain Side", and "Hey Hey What Can I Do?" all songs in the blues vein and take their place besides the other greats. There is also a book of liner notes written by Cameron Crowe that have bits of interviews with the band and info on some of the songs. All in all this is a must have for any Zep head or person who apperciates good music.
Can't Get Any Better Than This.......2007-01-20
This is the best boxed set in music history by the greatest rock band in music history. Too bad they did not include The Song Remains the Same and How the West Was Won to it.
My only problem with this set is that my red aussie cattle dog ate the slipcase for Led Zeppelin III and IV and I cannot replace it. So I have a nice set with nice double slipcases and one eaten by my dog. At least she has taste huh? P.S. The cds are still good.
LED ZEPPELIN Collection.......2007-01-10
Simply wonderful. Exactly what I was waiting and hoping for. Excelent package and sound quality.
The best rock band of all time.......2007-01-09
This is the best box set I own. I absolutely love Led Zeppelin and all of their albums are in here. Well worth the money.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome........2007-07-12
I love Lord Of The Ring soundtracks and this one is as good as the others. If you like the soundtracks you'll love the complete recordings. Thank you mister Shore for such a great time listening to this music.
Now waiting for The Return Of The King's Complete Recordings.
Amazing!.......2007-07-07
This is a must have for any Lord of the Rings fan or even any fan of music in general. I fell in love with the score to this beautiful trilogy and this complete set is perfect. I can't wait for the third installment!
Excellent recording and two formats.......2007-06-12
As of recent, I have starting collecting again film music and the Lord of the Rings complete recordings was a natural.
The sound quality is very good and the packaging would make any collector of Lord of the Rings memorabilia quite happy. (I am not a collector but still appreciate the packaging.)
Contained in the package are cds with the tracks which I aptly moved to my computer in lossless format and also a DVD. The DVD turns out to be the entire collection of the CDS presented in DVD format with a menu. - Nice touch.
While I can't tell the difference of quality between the CDs and the DVD, I like the DVD set up when I want music in the background while I am working away.
Overall, a terrific collection and some my be disuaded by the price but I found this to be a particularly good set of recordings and well worth the cost.
Both "Two Towers" and "the Fellowship" are available and I'll wait for the 3rd to become available later (hopefully).
Let's be clear here - quality recordings, two formats provided, nice packaging for those that need it and a little costly. I can live with the latter and enjoy the music as anticipated.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - The Complete Recordings.......2007-05-09
onl for collector..
A bit pricey but well worth the coin!.......2007-04-26
Before viewing The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, I didn't think that anyone with great skill was composing music in the classical, romantic period style, anymore. I stand corrected! Howard Shore's music for the three LOTRs movies just blew me away. I rarely buy movie soundtracks because the soundtracks, divorced from the movie, don't stand up as well crafted pieces of music, on their own. If you have decent speakers, in your home theater set up, and a player that decodes 5.1 DVD-Audio soundtracks (I have a player that decodes both high end audio formats: SACD and DVD-A.) The sountrack on the DVD-A disk (5.1 channel, 3D sound!!), is phenominal! The use of the human voice as both a musical instrument and in songs to convey a message is something that I especially like in classical music and is iceing on the cake in Howard Shore's compositions. That he wrote music to take advantage of the vocal skills, of each individual vocalist, is one example of many where Howard Shore went the extra mile in composing his musical masterpieces for each movie.

"This is it: Everything the Police released," boasts the notes in the 66-page booklet included with this box set. Obsessive fans have already written to rock magazines indignantly pointing out the omission of this or that obscurity. But everyone else will find that these four discs include all the Police they'd ever want to own. The first two discs include all of Outlandos d'Amour, Reggatta de Blanc, and Zenyatta Mondatta in their original order, interspersed with live rarities and singles B-sides. Discs 3 and 4 are more satisfying, including the band's well-crafted studio high points, Ghost in the Machine and Synchronicity, plus more outtakes and live tunes. The set ends with "Don't Stand So Close to Me '86," a dismal remake of the early favorite. By this point, the musician's egos were running rampant and they were barely speaking. If anyone wonders why the group called it quits so abruptly, this tune makes it clear that the split was smart and timely. --Jim DeRogatis
Customer Reviews:
Happy with "Message in a Box".......2007-05-28
This product is great! I love having the complete recordings of The Police in one collection. Having the B-side and the live versions of songs is very nice. I'm an even bigger fan since opening this collection!
its the police.......2007-03-28
it's good if you like the police. bad if you don't. simple enuff.
i agree, not complete.......2007-03-10
I don't own this, but from just looking and listening to what is on these CD's, I know that there are more than one version of some of these songs (like message in a bottle which sting performed solo as well, and in fact sounds better that way). I think masata tango has a slightly different version as well. Other songs (such as "Tea in Saraha"), imo, sound better when there are not live.
That being said, I suspect that some of these songs you might not be able to get on CD (maybe, maybe not - depends on the song).
A very good collection nonetheless if you are a Police fan.
All that you need.......2007-03-05
This box set is excellent. It has all five of their studio albums, b-sides, live tracks, and a few unrealeased cuts. It also has a book on their history with photos. Perfect for the fan who doesn't have ecverything.
NOT COMPLETE.......2007-01-17
Sadly, the Spanish and Japanese versions of "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" are missing. Granted, this is of interest primarily to true completists, but why would A&M release (and now re-release) a product that boasts it's "everything the Police released" and knowingly omit a domestically-released single?

AWESOME!.......2007-07-10
If you enjoy gospel music -- YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET! Elvis' incredible voice is perfect for the soulful lyrics. Plus he picks up the tempo on many of them making them sound more like rock. All of my favorites are on this 3CD set - so I'm very very happy that I bought it. I highly recommend it!
This CD is great!.......2007-07-07
Elvis sings gospel songs like no other! Some of the songs are a litte rough but you have to realize some songs were recorded in his home or at the studio while he is just playing around. The first disc is more of the released songs while some of the songs on the other CD's are live versions or unreleased versions with him laughing and talking. I thoroughly love this set!
Great gospel album!.......2007-07-05
I have always thought that Elvis' voice was never better than when he was singing gospel and this album proves it! Well done remastering, clear, very good sound. Absolutely a must for people who love gospel and Elvis!!
Awesome.......2007-06-27

Great music , Fine performance.......2007-06-14
Elvis is at his best on these albums singing songs that he apparantly very fond of as he puts his heart and soul into these great old time gospel hits. Your service was prompt and every thing arrived in perfect
condition. Thanks

As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Beautiful.......2007-06-15
I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.
Awesome.......2007-06-12
This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.
Excellent Music tracks from Movie.......2007-05-03
Brings the movie back as you listen to the full version of the track.
Complete?.......2007-04-07
This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.
Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03
I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

Amazon.com essential recording
This Rhino re-release of Amazing Grace is at least as much a work of love as of marketing. The sound is beefier and clearer, but most importantly, the two-day church sessions are included. So, there's much more church (specifically, Reverend James Cleveland's marvelous orating) on the record, as well as contemporaryisms such as a cool organ rendition of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord." Originally released as a double LP in 1972, Amazing Grace cracked the Billboard Top 10 on its release, making it one of the best selling gospel records of all time. Grace was recorded in a large Baptist church with an ultraenthusiastic audience in the pews, a full, funky band, and the Southern California Community Choir under the direction of Franklin's mentor, Cleveland. Her voice is melismatic and intensely emotional, yet pure and controlled, as if she is channeling the Holy Ghost. Franklin's father, the brilliant preacher Reverend C.L. Franklin, makes a brief, proud appearance, remarking, "She has never left the church!" Other highlights include the beautiful "Wholy Holy," an 11-minute, heart-stopping "Amazing Grace," and Inez Andrews's stirring "Mary, Don't You Weep." Way more than a return-to-the-roots record, this set is an inspired gospel-soul workout that arguably showcases Franklin's strongest singing ever. --Mike McGonigal

THE LAST TRACK THAT IS ON THE 1ST TRACK.......2007-05-16
THE CD OVERALL IS OKAY, BUT I SHOULD HAVE RETURNED IT BUT MY DAUGHTER LOVE IT SO WELL, I AM NOT REALLY HAPPY WITH IT BUT I CAN LIVE WITH IT.
A Revelation.......2006-12-10
Amazing Grace is widely acknowledged to be Aretha Franklin's magnum opus. With her 1972 return to gospel roots, she evolved from "Queen of Soul" to "The Queen." As her father, Reverend Franklin, notes to a rapt audience during one of the two night performances: "she can sing anything." This isn't filial boasting; it's an understatement. Recorded in a large Baptist church with the Southern California Community Choir, Aretha belts her way through traditional hymns, standards and pop tunes alike--and in the process redefines them. Her overall performance is a revelation. Period.
If praising Amazing Grace is needlessly redundant, the Rhino reissue itself is worth discussing. For those accustomed to the orginal record, be prepared for some changes. In the spirit of preserving the integrity of the event, the producers have reproduced both night's performance in their near entirety. Vocal overdubs peppered judiciously throughout the original release have been removed in favor of celebrating the imperfect but more immediate live setting. Thus, "Old Landmark" and "How I Got Over" sound noticeably rougher, though more authentic, than their studio-enhanced counterparts.
A must have.......2006-11-09
This cd is timeless- If you love Aretha you must own this cd
A treat.......2006-09-19
This is a remastered version of Aretha Franklin's breakthrough 1972 gospel album AMAZING GRACE. This was recorded in front of a live audience in 1972, culled from two live performances with the Southern California Community Choir, Ken Lupper, and the Rev. James Cleveland at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. This two disc set features the original 14 tracks, and a bonus 15, making it 29 tracks in total. It is great to hear the music unedited! This is a must have for Aretha's big fans!
I Love Aretha!.......2006-03-18
This is one of the best gospel compliations I have heard. I love the combination of Aretha Franklin and the choir and Rev. James Cleveland.

Bill Evans, with virtuoso bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, reinvented the jazz piano trio, creating stunning contrapuntal dialogues that merged luminous lyricism with layers of complex, elusive harmonies, its moments of limpid beauty suddenly giving way to surging rhythms. The trio's finest recorded moments, these performances were captured just 10 days before LaFaro's death in a car accident. The original releases--Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby--are celebrated masterpieces. This three-CD set is a brilliant reissue--almost a revision--of that material, with superb sound from the newly remastered original tapes and all of the music presented in the sequence of the original five sets, adding a previously unissued take of "Gloria's Step," spoken introductions, and the band's incidental conversation. For those who know this music, it's a chance to hear it in a fresh way; for new listeners, it will come as a revelation at a bargain price. --Stuart Broomer

A piece of history.......2007-06-27
For your ears only.....some people think that Bill evans is a "nice musician" Like its musac in an elevator. Listen to "my foolish heart" with headphones on, eyes closed, cranked! Let yourself get inside the music...listen to the subtleness of his playing...let it take you on a journey. This song, I think, shows the essence of bill evans. Scott lafaro and evans together is a killer combo, unfortunately there is not much out there from their short collaberation. This makes this 3 disc set a must own!
It's like being there.......2007-05-12
I was lucky enough to hear Bill Evans, Paul Motian and Scott LaFaro in person at the Vanguard. This recording is the next best thing to being there because you hear everything the recordng engineer heard. Being there was unforgettable. Evans is the Chopin of America, in my opinion, except Chopin didn't swing or (to my knowledge) improvise. This group of sidemen constituted Evans' best trio ever.
A superb collection.......2007-05-10
This set was my first introduction to Bill Evans...and what an introduction. A marvelous album in so many ways. Even if you are not a jazz fanatic, this is one box set to own.
Excellent.......2007-04-14
Execellent, both as an introduction or if you've been listening to jazz for a while. Only gets better over time.
What's All the Fuss About?.......2007-03-02
I came at this album kind of backwards - I first listened to CDs of Evans playing with Tony Bennett, then solo, then live at Montreux with Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette (trying to hear him at his most upbeat). I knew that this was one of the most revered albums in jazz, but I couldn't help but wonder what the fuss was all about. How much better could it be?
Much better. First, the recording quality on this album blows away the Montreux album. Yes, there's glasses clinking and occasional chit-chat, but it tells part of the story, as does the enemic applause. The bass tone is clear and full. The cymbals are not oppressive. It is amazing what such a meager recording setup can achieve in the right hands. If you have fear based on other bad jazz recordings, have no fear here.
Then there's the players. Bill Evans is Bill Evans - he has his good days and bad days, and most players people long in vain to live up to his bad days. And this was a good day, indeed. Then there's Scott LaFaro on bass. You really have to hear him play to appreciate just how much better than just about everyone else he was. He is busy yet tasteful, innovative and compelling to listen to. It would be a rare player indeed to come even close. Then there's Motian on drums. Based on other things I heard, I expected him to sit back, keep the beat and stay out of the way. He keeps the lid on the volume, but he plays with a control and intensity that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Unlike Jack DeJohnette, his timing syncs up precisely with Evans. His contribution to this trio should not be underestimated.
Then there are the songs. Each song is like an artichoke - dig a little deeper and you get a brand new flower. My favorites include Milestones with the upbeat drums and tasty chord voicings, the sweet playing on Alice and Wonderland, and the bass harmonics on Some Other Time, but there are so many good parts, and no weak ones. I'm sure my take will change over time as I become more familiar with the songs.
Finally, the context of the recording plays a big part in my overall impression. The small bits of applause add some irony to this recording - who knew that that this largely ignored day-in-the life of three underappreciated musicians would spawn albums, articles, and new jazz players for decades to come? The knowledge of LaFaro's impending death, his strained relationship with Evans, Evans' drug problems, Evan's profound grief at the death of LaFaro, and the fact that Evans is now gone all color my experience of this recording significantly. This album is a microcosm of the many tragedies and occasional triumphs in the strange and sometimes wonderful world of jazz. And a truly fine listening experience.

This two-CD box contains all 41 recordings Johnson made, including 12 alternate takes, and each cut remains a classic. This set's release in 1990 caused quite a stir, selling more than 500,000 copies, and, on the basis of endorsements from Eric Clapton and Keith Richards, introduced a great number of rock fans to Delta blues. Amazingly, Johnson built his enormous legacy on the strength of just two recording sessions: the first session, in November of 1936, produced among others "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom," "Sweet Home Chicago," "Cross Road Blues," and "Walkin' Blues," making it perhaps the most influential single session in blues history. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Come on in my kitchen the tribute is about to start. .......2007-07-08
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings of historical importance.
There are not many recorded works that can boast ageless songs and timeless influence the way the Robert Johnson's compilation can.
Not only has Johnson been a major factor in the lives of the people we refer to as "Guitar Heroes" but his name being synonymous with blues-rock idols has led to an infinite amount of people purchasing records they would never have known.
Forty-one doesn't sound like a large number (The amount of tracks offered on the CD) but it isn't the quantity but the quality. Johnson offers us a chance to feel the pain of the blues musician in the thirties. The guitar so difficult to play the fingers would often bleed. The lyrics didn't have to be searched for, he was living the story each minute.
We have idolized Cream's version of "Crossroads" the first second "Wheels Of Fire" went on the turntable but it was penned before rock and roll was even a dream. Titled "Cross Roads Blues" by Johnson the acoustic version is riveting. What cried more pain the six string or Johnson's voice? The Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna guitarist Jorma Kaukonen has left "Walking Blues" as a calling card for decades. Hot Tuna versions of the song became legendary in the mid-seventies. Here is Johnson's original unplugged (If I may borrow a term) with no thrills and not even clocking in at two and a half minutes. The genius of Johnson is the ability to take his foundation and extend it to new horizons. The songs have such intensity that they don't lose meaning with improvisation, their reputation only grows. Clapton while a member of Cream would give us an incredible version of "From Four Till Late" and Hot Tuna put their stamp on the tune for the 83 reunion tour.
"Love In Vain" conjures up an image of the Mick Taylor period Stones playing brilliant live versions that made time stand still. Johnson was the first man to follow her to the station and write about the trials and tribulations.
Led Zeppelin years later would cut loose with their rendition of "Traveling Riverside Blues" and in another world Mr. Johnson would build the foundation so they could achieve this.
Robert Johnson's name is associated with the blues. To many he is the reason they picked up the guitar. As you pick your favorites after listening to all the tracks, take a few moments to see how many albums you own where one or more of his tunes have been covered. There are over two hundred versions of "Sweet Home Chicago." Now you can experience where it all started rural Mississippi and ended before he saw age 28. Come on in my kitchen the tribute is about to start.
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Unique voice and vibes...........2007-06-09
As a child and very young teenager in the 60's and 70s, I grew up on a diet of the heaviest, sludgiest heavy rock, then later "graduated" onto very early punk rock in the late 70's -- from Zeppelin to Sabbath onto MC5, The Stooges and then The Pistols.
I soon wearied of both genres, and wanted to find out what the roots of rock and roll were. In the late 70's/early 80's then, I stumbled upon this fine, ghostly record, and was immediately entranced by the sense of mystery and lonely strangeness that Robert Johnson evoked. A lonely dark existential dread, records that captured the "human condition" and all its attendant sense of loss.
This album is, arguably, all you'll need to understand the inner core meaning of delta blues genre -- and it undoubtedly provides insights into the vast majority of the rock music that followed in its footsteps.
Ghostly, lonely , haunting, intelligent, innovative, unique, and quite essential listening for anyone that fell in love with rock music for all the right reasons.
It's amazing what someone like Johnson could do within the blues format -- poetic and epic, like the best poetry should be. File next to the best American poetry too. Those that appreciate Walt Whitman, Ginsberg and Emily Dickinson will instinctively understand what Johnson was doing, lonely and unheeded genius that he was.
Definitely worth getting the works.......2007-06-05
When buying a Robert Johnson CD, you might as well go the whole hog and get the works. If you've heard a couple of Johnson tracks and are unsure, I can assure you that there are no fillers on here (not even the alternate takes!) as every track the man recorded is a classic.
Why Couldn't they put the Released takes on one disc............2007-05-30
... and the alternates on the other? It is really annoying to hear (what boils down to) the exact same song a second time with only subtle differences. Also, another reviewer put it this way. RJ sold his soul to the devil, who in turn sold it to Sony.
Fortunately there are companies outside of the US that deliver a one disk, original 29, for a lot less money (check out the "Proper" version that comes from the UK - also available through Amazon). Also, the sound quality is better. Don't get me wrong. I think having the alternates on a CD is a great idea. Just maybe on another disk.
Delta blues in its purest form .......2007-05-21
Great compilation. I must say that I am tired of hearing people complain about sound quality on these old delta blues recordings. To me this is part of the whole experience. Robert Johnson is a classic - his music is enjoyable and its flaws are part of its character. If you like this type of music I HIGHLY recommend the 2 CD John Lee Hooker chess recordings. Just a man on a guitar healing himself - great stuff!!!

Mississippi John Hurt recorded 13 country-blues songs for the Okeh Electric Records company in 1928. Then he vanished. Actually, he never went anywhere. Indeed, he never strayed from his hometown of Avalon, Mississippi. He simply put the guitar down. It was the Great Depression, times were tough, money was scarce, and he needed to work. Nearly 30 years later, a blues enthusiast tracked him down, took him back to Washington, D.C., and suddenly Mississippi John's musical career resumed as quickly as it had finished. He recorded again, but these first songs from the late 1920s--with John's melancholy voice and hypnotic guitar playing at its most inspired--are his greatest musical accomplishments. --Percy Keegan
Customer Reviews:
The real thing.......2007-03-22
Fabulous singing, guitar playing that must have had a great influence on Jerry Garcias acoustic stuff. And wonderful songs.
Mellifluous early blues recordings!.......2006-09-04
Mississippi John Hurt recorded only 13 songs before returning to a life of obscurity and hard work on a farm. Of these 13 songs recorded in 1928, 11 were penned by John Hurt with the other two being traditional spiritual numbers ("Blessed be the name" and "Praying on the old camp ground"). The recording quality of these Okeh recordings is simply fantastic, and have the best recording quality I have heard from this era. A little hiss is heard (very little) and not much else.
As to the recordings themselves, they are probably the sweetest sounding, most mellifluous early delta/country blues I have ever heard. John Hurt may not have had the well-known name of a Robert Johnson or Son House, but these recordings have had their influence in their own way. The song Stack O' Lee penned by Hurt became an R&B hit in 1950 (as Stack-A-Lee) for New Orleans pianist Archibald, and also became a rock-and-roll hit in 1958 for Lloyd Price (as Stagger Lee).
It should be noted that after Hurt recorded these songs, he went back to work in his hometown of Avalon, MS. Because this was an out-of the-way town, few passed through it, and because of this Hurt was influenced by few outside artists of the day. What we wind up with on this album is the heart and soul of John Hurt.......and it is magnificent.
Avalon Blues; Complete 1928 okeh recordings.......2006-03-26
If you like to hear Mississippi John Hurt, this is a very good
group of early music he sang. I like it very much, and I bought it as a gift for a family member never thinking I would get "hooked" on him as much as the family member was. This open my eyes to some wonderful music. I'm glad I bought for someone else and got to listen to it myself.
sweet sweet blues.......2006-03-08
This is simply the smoothest blues i've ever heard. His incredibly fluid and smooth playing style is like a steady flow of water. Im also amazed at how one man could create such a sound with a guitar and sing at the same time. This music is also incredibly happy sounding for blues, the lyrics are rather sad, but the pretty way he sings them makes it very sweet sounding. This music reminds me less of the old delta blues (even though thats what it is) but sounds more like music from the hills, almost as if there is a folky feel to it. This is definately a great addition to anybodies blues collection, and i thoroughly suggest anybody who is interested in the blues to check this out.

Gentle, graceful, subtle, sweet--these aren't descriptions generally applied to the blues, but they offer a sense of Mississippi John Hurt's uniqueness and enduring legacy. Rediscovered during the 1960s folk boom after last recording in the late 1920s, Hurt cut the three albums compiled here when he was in his early 70s. His conversational phrasing sounds as natural as breathing, while his ragtime-tinged fingerpicking on acoustic guitar reveals more complexity the closer you listen. Beyond blues classics like "Candy Man" (the sly sensualist wasn't referring to lollipops), Hurt's range encompasses everything from folkish narratives ("Talking Casey," "Spike Driver Blues") to Southern spirituals ("Nearer My God to Thee," "Farther Along"). Though Hurt died in 1966, shortly after the last of these sessions, the music still sounds so fresh, you can almost hear the twinkle in his eye. --Don McLeese

One of the great American musicians.......2007-03-22
His singing and guitar playing is just as good as on the early recordings.

That's how you spell chicken!
This won't be a particularly helpful review because I don't "know" music. All I can say that ever since seeing The Blues Brothers, I have enjoyed listening to blues without knowing much about it. Favorites include Howlin' Wolf and Robert Johnson... and John Hurt.
He had a great voice. Cool vocals + cool lyrics = really listenable music. I am so greatful to my Yahoo!Music player for introducing me to him. :)
Classic Blues.......2006-02-28
This compilation of Mississippi John Hurt's Vanguard recordings are classics. These albums were recorded in the 60's after he was re-discovered by a music industry full swing into folk, blues, and "old timey" music. The audio quality is superb, the songs are timeless, and the voice is amazing. A must have for any serious blues fan. Robert Johnson is not the end all, be all of delta blues. Check out Mississippi John Hurt.
A review and a question.......2005-12-27
First my review:
The recorded legacy of MJH falls into roughly five categories.
(1) his early 1928 recordings on the OKEH label which comprise around 20 tracks. Although they are quite listenable and of historical interest and importance they are not the most enjoyable of his recordings. (2) recordings from 1963 that are available on the Rounder label. The sound quality of these recordings is somewhat disappointing. For that reason alone I don't listen to them much except for the fact that they were heavily relied upon by people who transcribed his songs for instructional materials. (3) The Library of Congress recordings (also from 1963). These are perhaps the best. The sound quality is excellent and there is an informality to the sessions which makes it like having MJH as a house guest for the weekend determined to play you every song he knows. (4) The (these) Vanguard Recordings, which I think were recorded between 1967 and 1969. These rival and sometimes surpass the Library of Congress Recordings as far as the material goes. There is also a palpable sadness as you can detect a man near the end of his life aware of the fact that he may very well be making his final recordings. The audio engineers did a terrible job at Vanguard for a good deal of these recordings. How can you screw up recording just one guy with a guitar? If you try hard enough you can set the levels WAY off. That is how. (5) there is also a Live MJH CD from Vanguard. It's sound quality is pretty good and it is endearing to hear MJH talk to an audience, but I find it less compelling material wise than the studio recordings.
Listening to MJH makes you want to piick up the guitar and learn to play like him. The good thing about this is that if you really want to you probably can. Many of his songs have been transcribed and broken down in intructional books and DVDs. After going through a "beginning fingerpicking" DVD by Stefan Grossman you are probably ready to take on MJH.
Go for it!
And now for my question:
It's not obvious to me from the Vanguard website whether the boxed set is actually a newer digital remaster than the original digital re-masters from the mid 80s. As far as digital remasters go those ones were a bit of a disaster. When you put the disc into your player you would have to crank the volume on your stereo. As you might expect, the careless lack of attention to levels setting in the remastering process resulted in a mushy sounding guitar. I seem to remember that was also a problem with the vinyl Vanguard LPs, particularly the first one. Hopefully these CDs really are *new* remasters because most CDs re-mastered these days are remastered quite well.
My music management software for encoding MP3s has the capability of looking up CDs in an online database. Whenever I present it with copies of the old mid 1980s vanguard CDs it recognizes them as possibly being from the boxed set, so I hesitate to spring for the "new remasters" without really knowing if they are indeed recently remastered. Perhaps someone else could clear this up.
John Hurt recordings should be a Schedule One drug.......2005-07-08
John Hurt is without a doubt my favorite bluesman. His guitar work is seamless. If you'd like to buy some blues for easier listening, get these. Blues is to often absrasive, but all of that disolves in Hurt's world. This music is terminally infectious, and will most certainly carry me to my grave.
