1 out of 5 stars Not worth buying!.......2007-05-29

I found this recording basically worthless. It contains only very short excerpts of the song. Not enough to get into and enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-01-18

This is the worst purchase I have ever made. It is a truly dreadful piece of work.I was so disgusted with it that I threw it into the trash can.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for "drop the needle" style tests.......2006-11-19

If you want to hear full recordings of arias, then this disc is not for you. It plays only tidbits of 99 arias. Contrary to the title, this is definitely not the only opera disc you'll ever need. You shouldn't take it seriously. This disc has next to no value for an opera neophyte. But for opera fanatics, there has never been a better test of your knowledge of operatic repertoire and singers. It's a great challenge for opera buffs. Sit down with your opera loving friends for an hour, play this disc, and try to be the first to identify the singer, composer, opera, and piece. If you're a music professor, this disc would make for an awesome pop quiz. Find out how well your students really know their opera repertoire.

1 out of 5 stars A CD with Attention Deficit Disorder.......2006-10-02

I don't know anyone who would enjoy this CD. It will drive opera fans nuts with a hundred exerpts that run about 30 seconds each, then fade out without the singers even finishing a single verse. It's more like an index of arias, or a volume of teasers that hucksters might use to sell opera CDs.

I never realized how much Bernstein's "Glitter and be gay" sounded like Delibes' "Bell Song" until I heard 35 seconds of one, followed 23 seconds of the other.

Maybe the TV show 'Jeopardy' could use this CD. 'What is "Hush little baby don't you..."??'

What a waste of beautiful voices and great music. 38 seconds of Enrico Caruso, followed by 31 seconds of Jussi Bjoerling, followed by 38 seconds of Dawn Upshaw.

My copy is going to go sailing into the wastebasket as soon as I finish this review.

1 out of 5 stars This sucks..........2006-03-31

I should only blame myself for not checking out more reviews... this is a CD filled with short, little snippets of great operas songs... and I mean SHORT, LITTLE snippets of 30 seconds or so, each. Don't buy this CD... it is a complete rip off... and that is saying ALOT since it is only $4.00... Again, my fault for not reading the reviews but I trusted that something called a "Music CD" would actually have complete songs... What else does this company offer? A "Music CD" that only has the intros or applause tracks to great songs...?

Move on to something else... Amazon has a great selection... just not this one.

3 out of 5 stars The Rediscovery?.......2007-05-17

Few sopranos in their prime have consistently
balanced vocal beauty and power as well as Price did.
I'm sure her smooth legatos were the envy of
her contemporaries, and those since. However,
I do not think this album is the best recording
of her live recitals.

Vocally, Price is in great form. I have no
complaints with the voice. My issue is with the
performance as a total package, in it's entirety.
The ambiance and general "feel" of this recording
is odd. To me, it sounds like Price was coaxed into
entertaining a groups of friends after a high society
dinner party; It's as if someone had suggested after dinner,
"Leontyne, why don't you regale us with a few classical
arias?"

Truthfully, this sounds like a completely impromptu performance.
The pianist is on autopilot, banging through each aria
in a fevered, sometimes overbearing bravura. Price
displays excellent musicianship by adjusting to
the volume and varying tempos without compromising
superb artistry. At times, it appears that Price and the
pianist are battling for artistic control. The
audience is obviously in love with her, as well they
should be. They are not reserved in their thunderous
applause and whistles. I personally prefer to hear Price
backed by full orchestra. The rendition of Spirituals
are well sung and sound more appropriate with the piano accompaniment.
"Vissi d'Arte" is regal and elegant, in grand fashion.
"Chi il bel sogno" from La Rondine is a richly
legato master work.

While Leontyne Price's vocal performance on this album is
top-notched, I would only recommend this "rediscovered" performance
as a collection keepsake. For some reason, I can't part
from the feeling that perhaps this recording was never
meant to be released. It's not bad, but by no means is it
definitive of Leontyne Price's remarkable contributions
as an operatic legend.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2007-02-13

Leontyne Price. Do I need to say anything more. That astoundingly wonderful voice, tremendous dramatic range --- earthy, angelic, strong, tough, tender, playful, loving --- a performer that never grows stale, always fresh and new.

5 out of 5 stars Rediscovering Leontyne Price.......2005-07-28

This magnificent recording is a collection of rare and beautiful arias sung by the gifted lyric-dramatic soprano Leontyne Price, the very first successful black opera diva, who reigned supreme in the 60's and 70's. While there are many full-length operas starring Price, this compilation album is quite refreshing because it's new and lovingly remastered from the original tapes/LPs. Among the arias are Bel Piacere- a Handel piece full of gorgeous ornamentation, Care Salve from Falla's Atlantida, very beautiful and majestic. Other songs include Summertime from Porgy and Bess and songs by Samuel Barber. Leontyne Price had versatility. While she was famous for her Aida, Leonora in Trovatore, Leonora in Forza Del Destino, as Tosca, and as many of the dramatic Verdi and Puccini roles, she sung roles that were modern and thrilling- Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra was one. She sang Lieder, she sang Gospel, she was a one-woman opera. This recording is a fitting tribute to her artistry. However there are many other fine compilation albums out there that far surpass even this new one - the best is The Prima Donna Collection, Leontyne Price in Concert, An Evening With Leontyne Price, The Best of Leontyne Price and The Ultimate Leontyne Price.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful Recital Performance From Price at Her Peak.......2005-01-21

World-renowned soprano Leontyne Price can be an intimidating presence on any stage but not on this live concert recording. She lends a warm, lovely presence and of course, her unparalleled voice, to this eclectic program, which amazingly at the age of 38, represented her Carnegie Hall recital debut in 1965. It's hard to imagine her sounding any better than this at any point in her career, and just as importantly, the program reflects her heightened awareness of what serves her powerful voice best. It's a wonderful record of an obviously triumphant evening, and in what must be one of the recording industry's most monumental oversights, it languished in the RCA vault for thirty-seven years.

Price starts with three opera arias from Handel, all very clean in delivery and one especially noteworthy, "Piangerò la sorte mia" from "Giulio Cesare in Egritto". She is simultaneously opulent and regal while displaying a strong sense of pathos as Cleopatra contemplates her fate. The ten-minute Brahms "Zigeunerlieder, Op. 103" is stunning for the freshness she provides with her flexible quicksilver tones, all delivered in her very expressive German. The four Poulenc selections are delivered in a such a delicate manner that it can only be described as buttery, and as such, perfect for the Gallic verses. And her big opera moment comes with Giordano's "La mamma morta" from "Andrea Cénier" sung with her requisite passion. Regardless though, Price really soars with the American selections where her voice takes on an added dimension of humanity. She begins this portion with three stellar selections from Samuel Barber, all shimmering showcases for her voice: the haunting "Nocturne, Op. 13 No. 4", the light and airy "The Daisies, Op. 2 No. 1" and the near spiritual "Sleep Now, Op. 10 No. 2". These segue seamlessly into two lush pieces by the relatively unknown Lee Hoiby, who wrote specifically for Price. For me personally, the high points of the entire recording are the four spirituals, which she sings with an unearthly combination of roof-raising conviction and clarion tones. She concludes with classic arias from Puccini and Cilea and of course, her definitive version of George Gershwin's "Summertime". This is as fulfilling a recital as you could possibly hear from this wondrous singer. Essential listening.

3 out of 5 stars Love Leontyne But Stick To The Studio Gems........2004-03-04

I have been an admirer of the great Price since I was a boy of 10 after discovering her tremendous recoding of "Carmen" with the greats Corelli, Freni, and von Karajan. In my humble opinion, the greatest period of her voice was the 50's-60's, where her incredible force and power were nicely balanced with a lyric openness and clarity. This live recording stems from that most golden period, before the more unattractive Price qualities came into play in the early-mid 70's - a major tendency to scoop and slide, a lack of crisp enunciation, and a cloudy timbre. Be that as it may, I was disappointed with this performance on a whole. Simply put, with the exception of the Spirituals, I find Ms. Price's performance uncommitted and almost like she is rushing through from one number to the next. This might be the "fault" of her accompanist, David Garvey. In every instance where a duplicate version exists in a studio recording by Ms. Price, I wholeheartedly prefer those over these live ones. Usually artists are even more committed and intense when performing before the public. I simply do not find that intensity here. My advice - stick to the great studio recordings or, at least, different live recordings, of which I know exist but have not as of yet purchased.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2003-07-20

This is a wonderful set. I would like to correct an error below. The climax in the Liebestod is a high A flat not high C. But you have to cut through the dense orchestration. That's why it's hard.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific recording.......2003-07-06

I write this as s service to Christa Ludwig fans. This is a set of Lieder. Christa Ludwig is fabulous - as usual.

But if you want to hear Christa ludwig in a set of operatic recitals that will knock of your socks and blow you to bits. Look for this CD called "Celebrating Christa Ludwig". It has Christa Ludwig singing excerpts from Elektra (as Elektra!!!), Ariadne auf Maxos (as Ariadne!!), Die Frau Ohne Schatten (as the Dyer's Wife), Barber of Serville (as rosina) and the Immolation Scene of Gotterdammerung (as Brunnhilde!!!). She will blow you to bits with her unmatchable dramatic sense, vocal power and beauty of tone - the greatest Brunnhilde that never was and the greatest Elektra that never was. She did sing Ariadne once in Salzburg in 1964, and she sang the Dyer's Wife for 10 years from 1964 (Vienna State Opera) to 1974 (Salzburg Festival). Her complete Ariadne is available under Myto records.

5 out of 5 stars Christa in her prime.......2001-09-19

Being an admirerer of Christa Ludwig, I went into purchasing this recording with great expectations, and it did not disappoint in any way. Ludwig is in her prime and is heard in wonderful interpretations and beautiful singing from among several composers and works. I not only enjoy listening to her personally, but am also able to put it to great use use in my Vocal Literature class here at the college in which I teach.

5 out of 5 stars Christa Ludwig is in great shape.......2000-04-15

She sang all the major mezzo roles, and also some in the dramatic soprano repertory, notably Leonora in Fidelio, Lady Macbeth and the Marschallin.

Her voice is a rich, expressive mezzo capable of dramatic incisiveness and even throughout its considerable range. Her upper register in mezzo music is excintingly projected.

Although this compilation is composed of different recordings in different settings in different years, all of them show a young Ludwig when she had not yet acquired her prime and her status of, arguably, the best mezzo of the world, which would arrive in the years to come.

Ludwig, thirteen years Schwarzkopf's junior, was also a member of the legendary Ensamble of Berlin, which meant that each appearance of hers in any opera produced in Berlin, Munich, Vienna, London, Paris....by this Ensamble was backed by many hours of rehearsals with the same group of musicians. Usually this group comprised Schwarzkopf, Grümmer, Seefried, Berger, Güeden, Dermota, Tauber, and of course Furtwängler. This is how the legendary recording of COSI FAN TUTTE was made, in which she shared credits with Schwarzkopf.

Disc one is devoted to Brahms -not less than 30 Lieder are here. She doesn't sing Brahms with intimacy, rather she attacks each song with open throat. Her diction, her care for words is now proverbial. My favorite Lied in this disc is In stiller Nacht. She sets the melancholic mood of the song with her rich, vibrant contralto-like tones.

Disc two brings us Ludwig singing Mahler, Schumann and Reger. From the melodic lines of Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn to the tortuous inflexions of Max Reger's two songs, she shows an extreme afinity with these composers. Schumann is taken very sensously, one can almost feel her velvety and creamy narrations of the woman-in-love of the song cycle.

Disc three is devoted to Schubert, Wolf and Strauss. Ludwig was not compelled to sing too much Wolf or Strauss (only 5 Lieder by these composers). It is her Schubert that shows her in splendid form. Auf dem Wasser zu singen is sung at such a low speed that her tone can only be described as luxurious. Erlkönig finds in her voice an ideal interpreter for the four characters of the song. In Wolf's Gesang Weylas, Gerald Moore has produced some magical arpeggios in the piano accompaniment, but of course this in only natural in him being the best accompanist ever.

Disc four is a miscellaneous melange of Ravel, Saint-Saëns, Rossini, Wagner, Händel and Bach. Ludwig never tried to sing on stage Isolde, but she recorded it; the Liebestod is taken at an exciting pace and one is only waiting for the climax to see if she can do it (the top c's). Yes, she can do it. Händel's aria from Julius Caesar is, again, sensous and exciting. Händel is another composer with whom she felt communicated. Ravel's Chansons Madécasses can only be described as magical. And of course she was outstanding in Bach oratorios, as is the case of Johannes Passion.

Wagner's Wessendonk Lieder are sung lustrously. I especially enjoyed Träume, which actually is sung, as its title suggests, dreamily.

Praised be the two accompanists for the majority of the recordings, Gerald Moore and Geoffrey Parsons. Both have gone now and the musical world seems so empty without their supreme touch. I do believe that 50% of Christa Ludwig's success as a Lieder Singer was due to them.

Thank you to EMI for this reissue.

5 out of 5 stars HIS BEST YET!.......2006-10-01

I'm a big fan of blues and have always liked Studebaker John's music. To be equally adept at guitar, harp, singing, and writing is no small feat, but he always seems to pull it off. "Self Made Man" is his best CD to date, full of great tunes. His guitar playing seems to have been raised to a new level here. It is just outstanding. His band just chugs right along with him.My only complaint is I had to special order the disc. His record company should get more of them out there. Buy it, believe me you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic CD from an original bluesman!.......2006-07-14

I was fortunate enough to catch Studebaker John & the Hawks live a few weeks ago at the Highway 99 Blues Club in Seattle and was totally blown away! This was the first time I had ever seen anyone play kicking, funky rhythm guitar with one hand and scorching blues harmonica with the other hand all at the same time! When he put down his harmonica and picked up his guitar slide, I was blown away all over again! During this performance, Studebaker John played most of the songs from the Self-Made Man CD. I can attest that the CD is true to his live performance. His songs are well crafted, his lyrics are entertaining and his timing is impeccible! If you like funky, hard-edged blues with incredible harmonica and slide guitar, this CD is a must-have! I like every song on the CD, but "Self-Made Man", "The Hard Way" and "Hoo Doo You" are my favorites. Highly recommended!

with this record, legendary russian violonist Dora Schwarzberg and world renowned argentinean pianist Martha Argerich celebrate their unique friendship.
For years both artists have performed throughout the world together, having annual musical encounters whether on tour or at Martha's festival in Lugano. this is the first time, however, that they have entered the studio together.

The recording, of the sonatas by Franck and Debussy and the Fantasiestücke of Schumann, took place in Brussels in December 2005. The artists' musical understanding is unique and this recording may come as a surprise for many listeners. Their approach is always inspired but also deeply personal and the result will, undoubtedly, constitute a new benchmark in the history of the three works. both artists gave much of themselves in order to ensure that this recording is a unique musical highlight with no comparison, and they are extremely proud of the result.

Furthermore, this is only the second time that Martha Argerich has been recorded in 5.1 surround sound for SACD (by multi-award winner recording engineer Hugues Deschaux) and it is her first studio recording for a non-major label.

The cover for this album is 'Internal Space' by the celebrated american artist George Condo, inspired by the performances on this recording.

      5 out of 5 stars Superb recital..........2000-04-03

in every way. Ms. Troyanos impresses us vocally, artistically and linguistically. The songs encompass a wide range of languages, musical styles and emotionality, and yet she sounds quite comfortable in each setting. Bolstered by Maestro Levine's heartfelt accompaniment, Ms. Troyanos renders a performance that inspired me to feelings of both awe and admiration. We are fortunate indeed to have this permanent record of such a memorable performer. I was inspired to seek out her performances after viewing a recent rebroadcast of the 1982 Met telecast of Der Rosenkavalier which featured her as Octavian.

5 out of 5 stars Troyanos Is Superb!.......2000-02-08

This live recital by Troyanos, with accompanist Livine, is what fans have long been waiting for. Simply said, this recital genuinely reflects the beauty and passion that was expressed through Troyanos' unique voice. Her sound was exquisite and this cd remains true to that sound. For those of us who love her sound and miss her presence on the operatic stage, this is a wish come true. Levine also provides great accompaniment. Let's hope there is more live material by Troyanos awaiting release in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Troyanos is Superb.......2000-01-19

If you have never before had the experience of hearing the late mezzo-soprano Tatiana Troyanos, this CD is a wonderful starting point. And for all of us who have been fans of Troyanos' for some time, this also is a "must have."

At long last, we have a lieder recital of hers preserved on compact disc. Here, finally, is a masterfully engineered recording.

Troyanos is as gifted a singer of lieder as she was of opera. My favorite selection on this recording was Ravel's Greek Songs. But everything here is absolutely terrific. I have listened to it many times since I bought it, and it still brings tears to my eyes.

There will never be another like her. Many thanks to all those who worked to bring us this recording.

5 out of 5 stars This Studebaker never goes out of style..........2005-06-15

Studebaker John has always been one of the most talented and versatile artists in the blues world. He's equally good at slide guitar and harp. And his playing has always been some of the most intense that I've ever heard. He doesn't disappoint with this effort. He's dropped the name the Hawks here following his name, but this is the same tight little rhythm section that he's had on his last few albums. But this cd sounds miles better to me than his last outing Howl With The Wolf. It has the live feel of someone who just came off tour and has retained that spontanious energy of a live concert. The solos here, both slide and harp, are simply amazing! In my opinion tha best he's ever done. Some great standout songs here include the slide happy "Hard Place And The Ground". The magnificent "If I Had A Nickel" which features some of the fattest and nastiest harp that he's ever done. But perhaps the standout song for some here will be the 8 minute album closer "Cold Chills", which has some of the catchiest chord changes that I've heard in a long time. What's remarkable about this album is that Studebaker John said this whole thing came about by accident. Studebaker and the band went into the studio to back a popular blues musician, who he said would remain nameless. But as it turned out this artist got drunk at a local pub and never showed up for the recording session. Since they were already in there, Studebaker decided to use the studio time himself in one marathon live-in-studio recording session for this album. After just coming off a month long UK tour and performing these songs on the road, everything here was ripe for the picking. What is maybe just as remarkable is these songs have been ready for over 2 years, but he had trouble with the music industry and unbelievably parted ways with Evidence Records. Now on a small independent label, this cd probably won't be promoted like it should. It's too bad. I've got all of his cd's, and i think this is his stongest to date. If your a fan, roll the dice and see for yourselves. I don't think you'll be disappointed. This is a real blues gem!

      4 out of 5 stars A great CD.......2005-01-09

Outside Lookin In is still my overall favorite of Studebaker's but this cd a right up there.

A more modern and rockin blues than some of his earlier cd's.
But I really am enjoying it.

If you have a chance to see the band in concert GO!! they are fabulous live.

5 out of 5 stars Placido And Puccini: Lost Treasures.......2006-01-13

This recording is of little known and obscure songs for voice and piano or voice and orchestra that Puccini wrote but were never popular enough to bring him the attention that he received with his operatic work- Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Turandot, etc. Placido Domingo is an expert Puccini tenor and he sings these songs with exquisite lyrical beauty and vocal bravura. Conductor Julius Rudel knows how to bring out the passion and golden tones in the music and the orchestra accompanies Placido with stunning precision. A te ("O quanto è vano") is a beautiful romantic piece that is sure to delight the listener. I also enjoyed the Hymns to Diana and Urania, as well the Rome anthem. The Morire song was lifted from the original score to Tosca, it is a song that Cavaradossi sings to Tosca before the execution in the last act. The music is stunning and Placido Domingo can sail through the music of Puccini like no other. He was born to sing Puccini, both unknown works and famous ones. The photo cover is of Domingo dressed up as Puccini and it's a remarkable resemblance. Very attractive cover!
