Pink Martini,an eclectic lounge orchestra, can credit both Boston,Massachusetts (a.k.a Beantown) and Portland,Oregon (a.k.a. the City of Roses),as well as Pacific Northwest politics,for its existence. Originally, bandleader Thomas Lauderdale formed it to perform at benefits to combat the ultra-conservative Oregon Citizens Alliance' quixotic anti-gay rights measures on the ballots. Despite its political origins, Pink Martini has grown into being "Portland's House Band", encompassing a wide range of styles and fans.

Pink Martini's debut album,"Sympathique",is now a decade old,and still vibrant. The opening,"Amado Mio",sounds like a perfect song for an Italian restaurant with a Chianti bottle on the table. "No Hay Problema" and "Andalucia" are both tapas-like instrumentals;while the latter is definitely Spanish,the former is Latin sounding. The selections "Song of the Black Lizard" and "Never on Sunday" add the savory musical flavors of Japan and Greece to the mix. "Que Sera Sera" is an amazing piece of black comedy;it would've been perfect for Vincenzo Natali's vampire sequence in "Paris Je T'Aime" (in which a beautiful Gallic vampire lady ends up with a geek) because China Forbes sings with delicious irony. "Brazil" is a glorious sun-baked ode to that country (and the choir isn't intrusive) "Sympathique" is all-American nouvelle chanson,and "Lullabye" is the lilting wordless version of it.

"Sympathique" is full of fun,toe-tapping music. It's perfect for a cocktail party!

Boring & Inoffensive.......2007-07-02

Obviously a lot of people like this CD, but I am not one of them. It has a couple of songs that are nice, but for me it is mostly a wide variety of reasonably boring and inoffensive music... not bad (except for "Que Sera, Sera" which I don't like with the exception of Sly Stone's version), but nothing to very captivating either.

Pink Martini put on an excellent show here recently in Cleveland, Ohio.
It was such a delight. I recommend all fans to enjoy their latest release Eugene.

Precocious.......2007-06-18

The famous first album of this exceptionally talented Harvard-by-way-of-Portland band shows all the hallmarks of precociousness. The orchestrations are exceptionally musically accomplished and witty, and the cosmopolitan tone is amusing and intelligently achieved. When they get it right, as they do for about 80% of their songs (most notably a sensational Chopin-inspired fantasy called "La Soledad"), they knock it out of the ball park. There are a few numbers that do seem to be trying too hard, such as a dark and purposefully off-key rendition of "Que Sera Sera" that tries to do for Doris Day what "La Valse" did for Johann Strauss; but this is a maiden effort, and allowances should be made for the artists trying to feel their way into their singular style. The band's lead singer China Forbes does not here have the kind of control over her voice she would later develop, although she still sounds powerful and arresting; impresario and arranger Thomas Lauderdale's efforts, on the other hand, had already reached their dazzling level of confidence and sophistication.

Pop's rush to raid the cradle continues with this promising debut by 25-year-old Canadian singer Michael Bublé. And while the young vocal star's good looks are smart enough for a boy band, his muse seems to have sprung from a more sassy and compelling musical era. Michael Bublé's voice takes me to another dimension high above. His voice has an undescribable quality that you have to experience to understand. He's like a cross between Frank Sinatra and Jack Jones. If you enjoy the standards of the American Songbook, you'll love the fresh yet traditional versions of the standards which he sings. I've been listening to the standards sung by Sinatra, Nat King Cole, etc for decades and usually don't enjoy remakes by recent modern artists; Michael Bublé is one of the rare exceptions who outshines all of the recent standards singers wannabes.

This CD is an incredibly great album to from start to finish; there's no need to skip songs which are merely mediocre or plain terrible because each song is a great rendition and a true gem.

They Just Came To Party Down.......2007-07-13

Reel Big Fish couldn't have picked a better mission statement for new album "Monkeys for Nothin' and the Chimps for Free" than lead track "Party Down." In addition to boldly stating that "[Reel Big Fish] just came to party down," the hyperactive romp offers a smorgasbord of musical styles from disco to country to glam rock. Casual RBF fans may identify this diversity only with the band's practice of playing their many versions of "S.R." live, but it's really been a hallmark of their studio work since "Why Do They Rock So Hard."

This album's best moments continue in Reel Big Fish's tradition of mixing ska energy with other musical conventions and interesting arrangements, from "My Imaginary Friend" - which sounds like the theme song from a children's show about atheism - to "Please Don't Tell Her I Have A Girlfriend," where the band sounds like They Might Be Giants and Billy Joel teaming up to sing a sweet drinking sway about infidelity (from the cheater's point of view, of course). It's also hard not to crack a smile during the hair metal guitar solo on "Drunk Tonight" (And, if not during the solo, at least during the hilarious Twisted Sister breakdown). Album closer "Cannibal" is another standout, as Reel Big Fish unleashes their inner Oingo Boingo for about three-and-a-half minutes before launching into an epic heavy metal epilogue.

RBF has a strong contingent of fans who (for whatever reason) profess only to like the band's first two albums. These traditionalists will enjoy the more straightforward ska-punk of "Another F.U. Song," "Live Your Dream," and "The New Version of You," not to mention a cover of Phil Collins's "Another Day in Paradise," danceable tracks that hearken back to the band's roots in the 1990s ska explosion.

Though the mood on this CD is lighter than other RBF efforts, lead singer Aaron Barrett still exudes some of his trademark pessimism. Not only does he ponder life in a godless universe, but he also notes in "Will the Revolution Come?" that "each generation's mess is bigger than the one before them has made."

MFNATCFF also includes re-recordings of old songs reaching as far back as "Everything Sucks," and even a pre-"Everything Sucks" demo. "Hate You," "Call You," "I'm Her Man," and "'Til I Hit The Ground" all sound ten times better on this disc, aided largely by the addition of Scott Klopfestein's excellent backing vocals, which have been one of RBF's best features since "Turn the Radio Off." It doesn't hurt that they've been re-recorded on such a clean-sounding album, which is a refreshing change from "We're Not Happy...," a disc whose vocals could have been recorded in a port-a-potty using an iBook's onboard microphone. Highly recommended!

It's a good time.......2007-07-13

This album is nothing less of a good, fun, energetic ska album. However, it's barely more. The new songs that were written for this album are fun to sing along to and make us longtime Reel Big Fish fans happy because of the abundance of upstrokes and horns, but after a few listens, the songs start to get boring. When I first heard this album, I was putting it right up there with Why Do They Rock So Hard? and Turn the Radio Off, but then a week or two later I started to realize how generic some of these songs are.

However, in the end this album is saved by the last few tracks which include mostly re-recorded songs off of Everything Sucks, and they sound amazing, and completely original because they were written when Reel Big Fish hadn't run out of material to write about. But don't take this review and my negativity the wrong way. It's a very good album, and there are some amazing songs on here, re-recorded and new, but it's apparent how little time they spent on it which was said to be just around a few months.

Overall, I loved to see that Reel Big Fish has made a full return to their ska roots, and the only thing this album is short of is just a pinch of originality and it'd be a 5 star album no doubt. Definitely check this one out!

The Fish are Back.......2007-07-12

Lets face the facts. Reel Big Fish's last true album was the downright disappointing "We're Not Happy 'Til You're Not Happy." It had a few gems in it, but it quickly grew stale after track 5 or so. "Cheer Up," which was before that, introduced our fellow Fish to a slightly different Ska-Punk / Ska-Pop sound, with slightly more 'teenage nerd-slash-loser"-esque lyrics. And you couldn't deny it with songs called 'Dateless Losers" and "What Are Friends For." But Cheer Up was still a great album in its own sense, but it didn't have that RBF sound many fans were used to listening to.

Now, after a few years, a great live album, a worthless Greatest Hits album released by the evil mind monkeys at Jive, Reel Big Fish are back. Now here is a disclaimer: Not all of these songs are "new" songs; some of them are past songs that have been redone. But that just adds to this albums greatness. RBF truely return to form in this album, and by form I mean the "Sell Out" days. The ska rhythm makes a comeback for RBF. Where as the past 2 albums have been full of power chords and have drifted away from the whole ska beat, this album finally brings it back.

And its orgasmic. Bottom line, this is far from RBF's best album, but my todays ridiculous music standards, this album is a pure gem. If you are a Fish fan, you need to get it, no matter what.

Music from Big Pink stands as one of those rare albums that turned the rock world on its axis. On this record, released in 1968 at the height of the psychedelic revolution, the five members of the Band (along with producer-sideman John Simon) eschewed spacey diversions, opting for an earthier route. Soon enough, wah-wah pedals and tape loops were making way for fiddles and mandolins. The group's most democratic effort (Robbie Robertson would soon emerge as the ensemble's mouthpiece), the debut's 11 songs come from Robertson, bassist Rick Danko, and pianist Richard Manuel, who contributes two songs and cowrote the doleful opener, "Tears of Rage," with Bob Dylan. Manuel's role would diminish from this point hence and the balance he brought to the quintet would be missed. Many would argue that Big Pink's sequel, The Band, represents their crowning achievement. The truth is, Big Pink is the purest distillation of the Band, and their preeminent recording. This remastered reissue is generously expanded to include nine bonus tracks, a bunch highlighted by a Robertson rarity ("Ferdinand the Imposter") and a cover of the Stanley Brothers's "If I Lose." --Steven Stolder

Music from Big Pink was one of the first albums I bought as a teenager in the late 60s. It came at a time in my life when I was discovering the world around me, becoming conscious of social issues and discovering who I was.

The music touched my soul and gave life meaning and wonder at a time so much was uncertain. I still listen to the album on occasion and it remains astounding in it's simplicity, beauty and imagery. My favorite album of all time.

Nice first effort.......2007-04-07

Okay, so the self-titled second completely blows this away, but this is still one of The Band's better albums - I've only heard three, so I'm not much of a judge of it. Still, this is an enjoyably rootsy affair. Of course it's got The Weight, a landmark '60's tune with interesting, oft-analyzed lyrics, a well-known chorus, a cool descending bassline, AND great traded lead vocals between Levon Helm, Richard Manuel (whose voice gives me the chills) and Rick Danko. The perfect song. Same with Chest Fever, which is pretty funky - sorta reminds me of Up on Cripple Creek from the next record. And have you heard how many times that organ riff's been imitated? Seriously, it's almost become a cliche now.
Of course, The Band will always be linked to Dylan, and three of these songs were written or cowritten by him. I like - no, LOVE - Tears of Rage, prototypical enigmatic Dylan. Same with I Shall Be Released, which Dylan later recorded himself and admittedly did a better job on because he wisely got that stupid high-pitched synthesizer/organ/whatever-thing out of there. But I love Manuel's vocals on the song, so I can't complain too much. This Wheel's on Fire was Dylan's third contribution, and again it's funky, with a clavinet-sounding keyboard. Probably the weakest of his additions, but still, a good tune.
As I said, Manuel's vocals give me the chills, especially on Lonesome Suzie. Admittedly, the lyrics aren't among Robbie Robertson's best. But Manuel almost brings me to tears when he sings it. No joke. It's a hard song to listen to because of that, but I like it just the same.
Long Black Veil is the most fun you'll find here, an old folk song from BEYOND THE GRAAAAAAAVE with Ultimate Multi-Instrumentalist Garth Hudson adding what sounds like a tuba. A nice, uptempo, swinging song, one of the more underrated ones here.
So far it seems like it should be a five-star, but I can't get into some of this. Like To Kingdom Come, In a Station and Candelonia Mission. I just skip right over 'em. Really boring songs with weak lyrics. And while We Can Talk has fun traded vocals, I can't see much reason to listen to it outside of that. That's just me, though.
Though the next outing was an absolute five-star masterpiece that likely tops everything else The Band ever did (as I've said, I only know three of their albums: this, self-titled and Stage Fright, plus I've got that one-disc Best of the Band), this is an effecient warm-up to that album and recommended to fans of '60's rock, especially roots-rock. If you like this sound, I also recommend Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Stones' stuff from '68 to '72.
The bonus tracks are kind of wastes... I like Yazoo Street Scandal, it should've made the original album, and their version of Key to the Highway is good enough (partially because no-one can make that song bad, really), but most are poorly-written and recorded (Orange Juice Blues, Katie's Been Gone, Ferndidad the Imposter, etc).

Essential.......2007-04-01

One of the greats, absolute must have. Also needed to accompany this is Dylan's "Blonde on Blonde" and "The Basement Tapes". Beside these 3 albums the rest seems no more than background noise. Songwriting, singing, musicianship par excellence, how come it has gone so far down in the USA since this? Maybe because these musicians were from Canada in the first place?

PS some of the best tracks on this CD IMHO are those missing from original vinyl - "Yazoo Street Scandal", "Katie's Been Gone", "Long Distance Operator", "Orange Juice Blues" - so even if you have the original vinyl, lucky person, you need this CD too :)

Music from Who Knows Where.......2007-03-29

It was always a close call whether this or the Band's 2nd album was their classic. This reissue and expansion presses the question to the point of impossible resolution. Not only do the outtakes enrich the release, but the remastering clearly improves the sound quality, making it much more dimensional and uncannily clear.

Time has also made it easier to assess this breakout album. It is still unclassifiable in the rock pantheon in which it finds itself. These are guys who went everywhere, heard everything, and play an incredible assortment of instruments well. They came of age when rock combos filled the juke joints and honky tonks, so yeah, you will find their work in the rock bin. In another era it might have been in the country bin, or the folk bin. At times, it sounds like each -- when it doesn't sound like old time carnival music, soul music, church music, even classical music.

For the genesis of this music is deeper than any of these categories. It goes as far back as the first European settlers on the continent; for the ultimate take on this subject consult Greil Marcus' Mystery Train and his essay inside The Basement Tapes. Simply, the music here comes from the mine that the oldest bi-racial folk tales such as Stackalee come from, where also you will find major authors such as Faulkner and Twain poaching when they try to give you a take on early times in America. Some of the stories come out like legends or folk tales, coherently told -- like Long Black Veil. All of it is in clearcut root English, but the closer you listen to some of the songs the more mysterious they become -- what are they even talking about, and who? In our era or 100 years ago? 200? All times in between at once? It is music not from "big pink" but from who knows where, and the band members freely trade the lead singer role back and forth as a song progresses, which only deepens both the wonder and the mystery, as if each of them is tossing on a piece of the whole story only they know.

While all this may sound like an academic exercise, it isn't -- The Band's school was the American road and they kept their eyes and ears wide open, playing separately and as sidemen for years, until they came together and made this. Warning: yes, it may be a bit of an acquired taste. But its well worth the effort, and is not only one of the most important rock records ever cut, but on the short list of important American music from century 20.

The Album That Changed Music Forever.......2007-02-28

Eric Clapton in the liner notes of Blind Faith's deluxe edition sums it up when he described this album as having the most significant impact on him "whose versatility and harmonious unity seemed blissfully free of the corrosive intensity which had fueled Cream".

loves Old Crow Medicine Show, and this album is another winning entry! "I Hear Them All" is worth the price of admission by itself, but there are other choice bits; "Cocaine Habit" "Down Home Girl" and "My Good Gal" stand out, as well as the tongue-in-cheek (I think ;) "New Virginia Creeper".

Having only really listened to the most recent previous album, I didn't know what to think of Big Iron World at first; it seemed quite a bit more bluesy than O.C.M.S., and I wasn't sure the change was for the better. After a dozen or so times through, though, I've got to say, they've got an uncanny ability to bring even a reluctant audience around.

There are a few songs on the album that I still don't love: Down Home Girl has a pretty monotone, repetitive sound; Union Maid is too obviously a throw-back; and Bobcat Tracks is just hokey.

Now that I got my complaints out, though, what a great album. My Good Gal is reminiscent of my favorite Louvin Brothers song (Knoxville Girl); New Virginia Creeper demands dancing; and I Hear Them All is up there with the best of American folk political protest songs. Just a great time, great musicians, and I wish they'd come play live in New England.

A year after his slickly produced recording debut launched him on a meteoric course to stardom, this combo CD/DVD set chronicles Michael Buble's crowd-pleasing live performances before amphitheater-sized crowds on a triumphant national tour. The audio portion kicks off with pair of new studio recordings again reinforce the 20-something Canadian heartthrob's 1950s-something artistic tack with mixed results: "Nice 'n' Easy" has a Sinatra-faithful jazzy swing; the overproduced, somnambulistic "Can't Help Falling in Love" evokes Perry Como more than Elvis. The remainder of the audio CD is comprised mostly of live versions of songs from Buble's debut, with his takes of "My Funny Valentine," "Fever," Van Morrison's "Moondance" and "Mack the Knife" again suggesting that Buble has an ear cocked wisely towards the Bobby Darin oeuvre. But with the notable exception of three elegant live-in-studio performances culled from Sessions@AOL, the live DVD does Buble's undeniabl! y charming stage presence a great disservice. Intercut awkwardly with offstage comments by Buble and his band, the balance of that disc suffers from an MTV-inspired, cut/dissolve-every-three-seconds style that's intended to focus one's attention, but does exactly the opposite. If sudden stardom virtually guarantees that Buble's impossibly smooth, expressive voice seldom ventures very far outside the Sinatra/Darin mold here, hopefully he'll leverage that fame towards greater artistic challenges in the near future. --Jerry McCulley

This is a dynamite duo: cd/dvd!!! I first heard Michael Buble music in the Spring of 2005. The first purchase was It's Time, which is mind-blowing good!!! Come fly with me is awesome! The music is out of this world, and in my opinion, he sounds better than the original singers in the remakes he sings. WOW!!! The DVD is great! It shows his sense of humor, as well as his sensitive side. And there is no denying that he is an absolutely talented and amazing singer! The band is second to none as well! My impression of his talent was cemented even further when I saw his Concert in Spokane, WA in July of 2006. He never missed a beat and his voice was perfectly in tune. I have shared my excitement about his music and how it has touched my life with all of my friends, and have converted many of them to also be faithful fans of Michael's music. I now own almost all of his CD's and cannot wait to get the next one!

No less an expert on pop affairs than Neil Sedaka likens the impossibly mature voice of 14-year-old vocalist/TV star (CBS' Still Standing) Renee Olstead to "Patsy Cline, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday all wrapped in one." There's no disputing the sultry vocal talents showcased on this debut that balances familiar chestnuts from the great American songbook ("Summertime," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Sentimental Journey") with more recent fare that veers from R 'n' B sass ("Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby") to 70s chart hits like Sedaka's own "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" and Maria Muldaur's "Midnight at the Oasis." A cynical ear might question how much of Olmstead's own life informs these bluesy performances: how trying can eigth grade be for an attractive redhead with a major label contract? Indeed, the tagline for at least one latter-day Ella Fitzgerald project comes frequently to mind here: "Is it real, or it Memorex?" Olmstead is yet another teen protege of hugely successful producer David Foster (who's midwifed the careers of Josh Groban and Michael Buble in recent years), and he provides her with some sturdy jazz arrangements to riff emotively on here--even if his production is as slick and bloodless as ever. To start, I haven't bought or wasted much time in the past 30 years listening to anything trying to pass for music.

I read all 160 reviews, to be sure I made it very clear what her album means to me. And why I would bother with adding a review that's clearly in the majority.

I found out about Renee's singing thru her TV show as others did.

So I don't waste anyones time with repeating what's been repeated many times in the past 160 reviews, I'll leave out her age. It has no relevance to her sound.

I won't compare her to anyone else...Not to say another more mature singer
hasn't emulated Renee note for note to her disadvantage because Renee did it first and better.

I've tried, but at a total loss to get hold of her other two albums 'Unleashed' & 'Stone Country'. Much as I like her singing, I'm not putting out $80.00 for a 4 track album by anyone. But If I were to spend that much on music, her singing would be the deciding factor.

With most of the 160 reviews, they focus on the fact the album is bluesy/jazz.. and her age, and how this relates to how she sounds. I wouldn't know bluesy jazz if it bit me. But I do know when I like something, and my only gripe about Renee, is that I only have 14 songs by her to play over and over aqain. Her new album Skylark is due out in two days, reported by several web sites. And for this reason, I add my positive review to this album. I want more albums by Renee to listen to. One album just doesn't play that long. I figure the more that know
about her, the more incentive she has to make more albums. And increase my odds of more albums by her.

I see with Renee's album, the music and her renditions. It's all about her sound and how it sounds like her smiling with each song. You can hear how she enjoys singing. And something else I've found, playing her album over & over again also brings on new discoveries each time. The same songs are never the same. That's why I can't get enough of her singing.

My favorite was & still is Midnight at the oasis.. But it's having a hard time remaining at the top of my list. She sings duets that change every time I hear them, and inch them closer to the top of the list.

I really shouldn't mention a favorite, as I've given all 14 songs in my Itunes list 5 stars, so that when I play my favorites, hers are at the top.

Oasis just has such an odd story line to it.

My recommendation would be, if you like music, Renee is the one to watch. If you like the genre of music she's now into, you wouldn't want to be caught not knowing who Renee Olstead is.

Then you have her invitation to sing for the president. I predict she'll sing for many more presidents.

I was prompted to read all 160 reviews to see just why this album only rated a 4 1/4 stars. It seems there were 3 Trolls that wasted every ones time with a review from them. And several that just didn't feel like 5 was deserved. None lower than 3 except the trolls. And even one of them couldn't give her less than a 3. I'd say that speaks more than most of the other 155+ reviews. A troll that couldn't bring himself to bash her singing worse than a 3.

Had to be trolls. 155+ were in complete opposition. Remove the troll opinions and you have a solid 4 3/4. Maybe more depending on the star graphics available.

Pretty redheads are proof of God's creative genius. That said, I sure didn't expect an album by a pretty young girl to be sold in the jazz section...Surprise......

This is an absolutely fabulous recording...Renee handles these standards with the maturity and vocal strength of one of significantly more years. The idividual songs need no comment; you already know them. The good news is that she will only improve with time. Our hope is that there's more where this came from. Get this. You'll be glad you did.

I have come to know Renee Olstead ever since she appeared on the popular CBS comedy "Still Standing", but it is her singing that gets to me. She is like no other teenage artist in that she is the only one to date that can interpret jazz statndards in a very breezy manner. Not is she talented, but she is very adorable. If she were a contestant on American Idol, I would vote for her in a second. In fact, she should be a superstar based on her singing alone. If you go into jazz, I strongly suggest purchasing this CD. It will win you over.

I'm not a huge fan of Fatboy Slim but this CD is great. Most of the songs you can hear all the time and there were a few I have not heard of at all. While most of these pay on commericals or in movies (mainstream) its good background music for parties.

As Matthew Blissmer said in his review, this is a GREAT CD to put on for friends that don't want to hear the (often excessively) long versions of each of the songs. I always ran into that problem... I loved the songs but they had awkward lead-in and lead-outs. In "Why Try Harder?", ALL the songs are beautifully edited, starting and stopping at exactly perfect times for the full effect of the song. No minute-long lead-out for "Going Out of My Head", and "Brimful of Asha" (one of my favorites) is cut perfectly down to size from the 7:30 full cut.

I can put this in a CD player and hit Shuffle and not be nervous about hitting an embarrassing song. They're all great.

If you're new to Fatboy Slim, or you've been following him for years, it doesn't matter, this is your CD. Clean up all those illegally-downloaded albums and mixes you were too hesitant to purchase, because this has it all in one neatly packaged, easily-purchasable CD! Time to pay your respects to the totally awesome Norman Cook in this totally awesome collection. Why look harder?

One of the most eagerly awaited albums in rock history, Big Brother & the Holding Company's 1968 major label debut (they'd previously released one thinly produced collection on the small Mainstream label) made good on all the hype generated by Janis Joplin's amazing performance at the Monterey Pop Festival the year before. Crowned by its hit single, a churning remake of Aretha Franklin's sister Erma's "Piece of My Heart," the album also contained Joplin's Monterey showstopper, Big Mama Thornton's "Ball and Chain," as well as the Gershwin classic "Summertime," on which Joplin's always underappreciated band (especially guitarists Sam Andrews and James Gurley) match her vocal intensity with their own ferocious playing. I first heard CHEAP THRILLS, by Janis Joplin's Big Brother & The Holidng Company, on vinyl. It was a life altering experience. At that time, it was the age of cheesy boy bands, screaming divas and mindless techno. This 1968 release was a breath [no, make that a gust!] of fresh air. This album starts off with a bang ("Combination of the Two") and relentlessly grows with intensity and bold musicianship. For starters, Janis' accompanists and back-up singers are seamless. I don't care how stoned out they were. They sound amazing, and a lot better than many sober artists of today. You can tell, since this was a live recording, just how stoked the audience was to see them. Janis encouraged...no, tried DEMANDED audience participation. Joplin thrived on drawing energy from the crowds that came to see her, and this is really made evident here.

What sets this music apart from other bands of its time (or of any time, really) was the combination of terrific, brilliantly orchestrated and arranged instrumentals, Joplin's amazing, spectacularly expressive vocals, channeling the agony ("I Need a Man To Love") and the ecstasy ("Summertime") of love and life. Plus, there are four bonus cuts, on this CD release of the album. I love you, Janis. It is really extraordinary how many artists have been inspired by her. There are truly no substitutes of imitations for someone so incomparable. Buy CHEAP THRILLS and consider it your introduction to real music.

there's a line of thought that's been floated out there that big brother & the holding company were not up to par with the talent of janis joplin. bunk. while nobody is going to accuse them of possessing any amazing facile grace on their instruments, the fact remains that ms joplin made her most powerful music with these boys. CHEMISTY here trumps technique. big brother's raw sprawling sound perfectly compliments janis joplin's wild vocals. she sounds possessed by some spirit of liberation at times here, shrieking a juxtaposed answer to the musicians fury. her performance seems to draw an energy from the wicked sounds being produced around her. this entire album is a wild rock and roll ride, and a must for all collections. the work she produced after big brother & the holding company seems tame in comparison.

i have always wanted to check out this album, and now i see what others meant when they listened to it. janis showed her behind on this one. my fave on here though is TURTLE BLUES, one she wrote. her performance of this is a wonderful thing to listen to. janis, when she is into it, man, has a way of sending chills up and down my whole doggone body in an odd way. i also like that last bonus cut on there as well........i cannot think of the name of it!!!! all in all, this is an enjoyable album. i would recommend it to anyone who has CLOSED MINDED opinion about janis joplin's singing style. actually, i also recommend anything where she is live..............especially early.

My Favorite Album.......2007-03-10

Cheep Thrills is my old man's favorite album, daddy! When Janice Joplin was with Big Brother & The Holding Company they were both at their best and it wasn't Janice. It was truly the whole band Big Brother not just Janice (tho she was stellar). The cd has bonus cuts on it which don't improve the album. In it's original layout it was just the coolest from the Crum comix on the jacket to the lineup of pure genius classics. Got it nice -n- cheep

The formulaic pop of "Wherever You Are," Ingram's #1 single--reprised like the bubblegummy "Love You" from an earlier album--is standard-issue Nashville, as is "featuring" Sheryl Crow on "Hold On," but then burying her vocals in the mix. But Ingram makes up for such transgressions with his deliciously lubricated cover of Hinder's "Lips of an Angel" and with his own finely-drawn songs of family (the folkish "Ava Adele") and the Lone Star landscape that produced him ("Great Divide"). Jack Ingram's first studio album in a few years is excellent. "This is It" is a solid collection of Ingram's signature "red-dirt" country songs; herein Jack Ingram displays his virtuoso guitar skill and his never-failing vocal abilities.

1) Measure of a Man - This song is about Jack coming to terms with his father leaving the family. The music video features a Kristofferson look-a-like. My favorite moment is 2:25 minutes into the song: he sings the chorus over an acoustic guitar.

2) Hold On - This song is inspirational and features Sheryl Crowe's vocals. I'll let the song speak for itself: "Hold on to dancin' in the rain."

3) Lips of an Angel - When Jack Ingram covered the Hinder hit, he was much derided for doing so. However, I prefer his vocals over the gravelly Hinder singing. The added country instrumentation takes a hardcore rock song into better dimensions. When he was on CMT Top 20 he said his kids like Gwent Stefani, and they particularly like him to sing "Hollaback Girl" rather than his own songs - he can make any song great.

4) Wherever You Are - Jack Ingram's 2005 Country #1 is a road-song about a man on a quest to find his girl. The video (included on this disc) was on CMT's Sexiest Videos list for obvious reasons and the Top20 Countdown. Great vocals.

5) Love You - This is a fun, playful song that replaces f**k with love. Jack Ingram gives the listener a 2:45 minute great time. The video is also on the disc, and features a Paris Hilton look-a-like destroying what she thinks is Jack's truck while he and his band preform. This should have been a #1.

6) Easy as 1, 2, 3 (Part II) - This is my favorite song from the album because it's so upbeat and hopeful. It evokes a slight bluegrass feel. This will make you "feel better" as that's what the song is about.

7) Ava Adele - This ballad about Jack's daughter reflects the proud fatherhood he recently discussed on CMT Top 20 with Lance Smith (as a side-note he said Ava always covers his mouth when he tries singing it to her). The partial spoken/sung lyrics evoke Johnny Cash's style.

8) Make a Wish (Coming Home Again) - I enjoy Jack Ingram's guitar playing on this song, because as he sings about electric lights, his strumming evokes lightning imagery. Another good road song, with a catchy hook that will be in your head. The song's message is very positive.

9) Great Divide - Jack sings about West Texas and how he will always enjoy the unchanging ways of the people. Another great road song.

10) Don't Want To Hurt - I love the thumping bass-line in this song; it reminds me of Little Big Town. The message is very relatable.

11) Maybe She'll Get Lonely - Jack Ingram croons about the need for a woman and wants her to want him.

12) All I Can Do - This is a great way to end the CD. The use of trumpets evokes a post-Katrina "Big Easy" feel.

The CD booklet is actually a poster with Jack on it. He's currently on tour with Brad Paisely, Taylor Swift and Kellie Pickler and I hear they like to play practical jokes.

Jack Ingram makes a hit with "This Is It".......2007-05-07

Jack Ingram is an incredible artist. I first discovered Jack while watching CMT and have loved him since. He is the most fresh, distinct, and enjoyable artist in country music. His perfect blend of radio-hits and West Texas/honky-tonk sound is what makes this album, and Jack, great.

After many years struggling in the music scene he has finally got the commercial and critical acclaim he deserves. He recently had a No. 1 hit (on the Country Singles Chart) with "Wherever You Are," and "This Is It" debuted at No. 4 (on the Country Albums Chart). This CD is an excellent musical experience from start to finish. I believe it is the best in Country Music so far this year. Fans of Country and Rock will enjoy this CD for the well-crafted music, lyrics, vocals, and also the neat fold-out poster. Of interest is Jack's ability to transfer his incredible live sound onto CD format.

"Measure of a Man" which is his next single is a great road song. Great to listen to while driving. It is a song about the relationship between a father and a son. His lyrics are effective in crafting the story; he claims it is "Biloxi Part II," a continuation of an earlier song he wrote.

"Wherever You Are" is his No. 1 single. It is radio friendly and a good Country ballad. Definitely worth the price of the CD alone.

"Love You" is a great honky-tonk song that substitutes love, for a four letter word, in the phrase 'f--k you'. It is humorous and enjoyable. While not the best on the album it is top quality nonetheless.

"Easy as 1,2,3 (Part II)" is the best on the album. It is simply purely enjoyable to listen to. If it was a single I believe it would have charting ability.

"Make a Wish" is a great song and has a strong playback ability. It is the best example of Jack's vocal talent. I was mesmerized by the range, beauty, and power of his voice on this track.

UPDATE: After two moths of owning this album it still is appealing. I love this record. Undeniably Jakc Ingram is the best thing in country music to appear in nearly a decade. Other newcomers (Josh Turner, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, etc...) are great but Jack Ingram is exceptional. I highly recommend this CD!

Prime Cuts: Easy as One, Two, Three (Part II), Ava Adele, Whenever You Are

After years of loitering along the fringes of country music, Ingram has finally broke in with his number 1 smash "Whenever You Are." To up the ante on the barometer of hip, Ingram has ushered the advent of this CD with the unlikely cover of rock act Hinder's "Lips of an Angel." Thus far, success has been effulgent as "Lips" is lighting its way up the upper echelon of the Billboard country charts. Produced by Jeremy Stover, Doug Lancio and Ingram, this disc steers along the path paved by "Wherever You Are" which means that most of these 12 cuts have been recorded with an eye for becoming darlings of radio. However, before purists who have followed Ingram's career bark at Ingram's viable shrewdness, not everything have been sacrificed at the altar of commercialism. Truth be told, "This is It" does indeed have a more polished savvy sheen to it, but this is not to say there is a dearth of the raw emotional investiture Ingram always brings to his songs. Further, Ingram's commercial success has no way been caliginous towards his twinkle for Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle and Robert Earl Keen's type of Americana that rock with a venturesome abandon and drenched the soul like vintage liquor.

Destined to be a hit is the Radney Foster-Gorde Sampson opener, a stately rock number with a Bon Jovi-anthemic beat. "Measure of a Man" chronicles a coming of age story starting with a boy leaving home at 15. Without being told that "Lips of an Angel" was first recorded by rock act Hinder, it might easily sound like an Ingram original. A brooding bluesy ballad calling to mind Gary Allan's "Life Ain't Always Beautiful," "Lips of an Angel" describes with vivid details the feelings of a man on the verge of cheating on his girl. If such moral graft has left a bitter aftertaste, "Hold On" which features Sheryl Crowe on backing vocals has a more censurable disposition about the tenacity of love over circumstances. While the driving-guitars and barrier-smashing drums on Todd Snider's "Easy as One, Two, Three" is sonically infectious.

However, the album's highlights are in the contemplative moments. To prove that the triumph of a song resides not in its lyrical density but the sincerity of the words, "Ava Adele" is the bona fide example. With the simplest of words, this gentle guitar-driven lullaby is Ingram's love song to his daughter. Giving it depth and grit, Ingram's gravelly vocals brings out a magical quality to this heart-wrenching ballad. "Ava Adele" could easily be Ingram's magnum opus. While the mid-tempo "Maybe She'll Get Lonely" finds Ingram in Tim-McGraw territory as he holds to the sliver of hope that his departed paramour may return to him if she gets lonely. And as an added bonus, two of Ingram's previous hits the propulsive "Wherever You Are" and the more rockish "Love You" give this collection added heft.

Indeed Ingram has taken a step in the right direction by making his music appeal to a large spectrum of people vis-à-vis country radio without completely selling out. However, as a whole, Ingram has yet to reach the lofty heights he's capable of attaining. There are still pockets on this disc that still borders on the filler side (e.g., "All I Can Do" and "Make a Wish"). So, let us hope that Ingram is not serious about this album title: for this CD is definitely hopeful, but there is still some distance from reaching "it."
