Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

4 out of 5 stars Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

5 out of 5 stars Loved "Summon the Heroes".......2007-03-17

Great soul-stirring music! Highly recommended for anyone who loves Olympics orchestral and similar music.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational music during awards.......2007-01-22

I use the music on this CD as background when I give awards during track. It's very inspirational & uplifting to the athletes. They love it.

4 out of 5 stars Rousing but...........2006-02-24

This CD, with John Williams at the baton, summons the heroes in a rousing manner with a wide range of Olympic as well as "heroic" (e.g., "Parade of the Charioteers" from "Ben Hur")selections. Three of the twelve tracks were written by Williams himself with his "Olympic Spirit" being recorded for the first time. The electrifying "Ode to Zeus" by Mikis Theodorakis is probably the single greatest selection.
In an amazing oversight, however, this CD does not include the Olympic Theme.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable romp through Olympic Themes.......2005-09-01

In the US at least, John Williams is known more for his movie scores (Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark to name a few), but he has put his stamp on the Olympics with his several themes and fanfares for the Olympics. Dating back to 1984, Mr. Williams has composed many well known fanfares to the Olympics, and this compilation contains several of his fanfares in addition to music used in other Olympics. The original release for the disc was 1996, which makes it current through the Atlanta Games; if you're looking for the work that John Williams composed for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics (2002), you have to go with American Visions (I believe that's the title).

On the whole, the music is well done, but I'm more used to the faster pace of the Parade of the Charioteers found on Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' Hollywood's Greatest Hits Vol. 1.
One other quibble (minor, really) is that people tend to think of the 1984 Olympic Fanfare as being always merged with the traditional Olympic Fanfare, but you can find it separately on By Request by John Williams and the Boston Pops. You'll also have to hunt around for the full composition of what people consider the traditional Olympic Fanfare on another disc, but that's a minor issue.

One nice item on the disc is The Olympic Spirit, which was composed for the NBC Broadcast of the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, but never used. My children really like that piece a lot, and usually request it to be replayed when it finishes.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most uplifting and motivating albums!!!.......2005-07-19

When I first listened to this album, I was in awe of the beauty and grandness of the music composed/performed by John Williams. John can make composing music an exalted art. His music is purely genius and captures the ideas of the album in which the score is in. Back to the album . . . it is AWESOME! This includes many well-known songs but also many undiscovered treasures. Of the twelve songs, I especially enjoyed:
Track One-Summon the Heroes
Track Three-Bugler's Dream/Olympic Fanfare and Theme
Track Twelve-The Olympic Spirit
Bottom Line: BUY THIS ALBUM!!!!!!!! A TREASURE!!!!!

Silkk the Shocker isn't the most gifted of the Miller brothers (Master P and C-Murder are his siblings), either in his generic-as-they-wanna-be lyrics or in his lumpy-like-day-old-oatmeal flow. Yet the hits keep coming, as the solid if uneventful Beats by the Pound production crew provides enough bouncy loops and catchy choruses to keep Silkk's head above water. Most notable are the down-tempo stories related on "Give Me the World" and "Mama Always Told Me." But when it comes to No Limit, an ounce of bounce is worth far more than a pound of gloom; it's "I'm a Soldier," the token posse cut on the record, that achieves its purpose best. Laced with a quick-paced, raw funk, it reaffirms the universal particularities of the NL sound. --Jon Caramanica

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars More saying UHHHHH.......2007-05-14

Silkk the Shocker's 1998 sophomore effort "Charge It 2 da Game" is a showcase of No Limit Records in its prime. No Limit became extremely popular during the late 90s and was notorious for producing frequent, overblown albums with great singles and lots of filler. No Limit's cheap, by-the-books gangsta rap really can be incredibly appealing though, and it's easy to see why they had so many platinum selling records. When the formula works, it works very well, and much of "Charge It 2 da Game" is no exception. Silkk is not quite the MC his brothers Master P and C-Murder are, but he's got a unique flow and can display some very good lyricism. Like all the No Limit releases, this album is thick with guest appearances, only four of the songs are not posse cuts featuring the other assorted No Limit soldiers. That, and there's a whole lot of saying "UUUUHHH!" The Beats By the Pound team provides all the production, which overall is pretty average, a lot of the beats sound similar and only a few stand out. The running time of the album and individual songs is bloated. Silkk does perform pretty well and there are some excellent cuts scattered, but overall there's just too much filler to make this a very cohesive album. No Limit fans should pick this up, but I wouldn't consider it a must have.

The first song is the No Limit anthem "I'm a Soldier," where over a simple, hardcore beat, ten of the label's rappers deliver representing verses, including all three Miller brothers, Fiend, Mac, Mia X, Mystikal, and others. This is a very memorable song, showcasing exactly what made No Limit so popular during this heyday. I like the epic-sounding "Give Me the World," which showcases the ridiculous materialism of Silkk and his label, but still lyrically is pretty strong. "Throw Yo Hood Up" is a decent Snoop Dogg collaboration over a standard upbeat Beats By the Pound production. "Just Be Straight With Me" is a highlight, a catchy and fun song. On "If I Don't Gotta," Silkk and Fiend dig deep for some heartfelt lyrics, it's one of the better cuts. I find "We Can Dance" to be a little monotonous and boring. "Mama Always Told Me" is a very average No Limit song, you'll feel like you've heard it before all right. "You Ain't Gotta Lie to Kick It" is more skippable filler material. I really like the gangsta slow jam "Thug `N' Me," this is some No Limit at its finest. I really like the production and the vocals are great. "All Night" is average and forgettable. "Who Can I Trust?" is lyrically and musically one of the better songs. "It Ain't My Fault" is okay, a Mystikal appearance improves it. The catchy and upbeat "What Gangstas Do" has great vibes, it's a highlight for sure. The bouncy "Let Me Hit It" is okay, but "How Many" is an anthem, a hardcore song that despite being generic is very appealing. The last three songs are all solo cuts, the best being the deep and well-produced closer "Me and You."

"Charge It 2 da Game" is now out of print, but keep in mind that this was a #1 album less than ten years ago, so it's still pretty easy to find. I recommend this album to fans of the other No Limit material, there's some fun music here that's quite enjoyable. It's very inconsistent, but "Charge It 2 da Game" definitely has its moments.

4 out of 5 stars Getting better..........2006-08-28

When you look up the word "versality" in the dictionary, you'll see Silkk the Shocker's portrait right o tnext it. Charge it 2 da game, Silkk's second album, proves without a doubt that he's not a one-hit wonder and is able avoid the sophomore jinx that has plagued many artists in the music industry. His flow is unpredictable and varies from track to track which keeps the listener curious on what Silkk might to do next. For example "Give me the world", we find Silkk to be aggressive as his desire for money and power continue to intentsify while "Who can I trust?" has Silkk in a state of confusion as he uncovers the truth on whether the person he knows is really a friend or foe. Then there's "All night long" where he's laid back and chillin', which is ideal for party or while you're cruising in your ride. Being honest with him is important in "You ain't got to lie to kick it" proving that you don't need to be rich and flashy to be his friend. It doesn't stop there, a West Coast and Ditry South collbration is put together as Silkk teams up Death Row artist Snoop Dogg in "Throw yo hood up" and outcome that turns to be Silkk's best track out of the entire album.

With all that talent in Silkk, his album is by far from flawless, tracks such as "If I don't gotta" and "How many?" are pure fillers and do nothing to enhance the album's quality. "We can dance" is a long, boring, uninspiring track that will surely put the listener rather than party. Also, The skits here are short and pointless which makes me questions why Silkk would include such material like that into his album.

Aside from all that, Silkk shows a lot of potential and no signs of slowing down.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 star 2nd solo album -- his best solo effort.......2005-08-22

A year and a hlf since his debut, Silkk returns with his sophomore effort, and unlike most 2nd albums, it is his best one. Like all No Limit releases around that time, guests are all over the album, but this is better as Silkk probably couldn't carry the whole album himself, and only 6 don't have guests and most of these aren't too good. Packed with 18 songs, it has 1 - 3 almost classics songs, 6 I skip, 6 ok ones, and the rest are good. Production is great on some songs and so so on others and is handled all by the Beats by the Pound Crew. Craig B & Mo B Dick each do 5 songs, O'Dell does 4, and KLC & Carlos Stephens each do 2. A good album to have for his fans or fans of late 90's No Limit music.

Clear and crisp and played with vigor and heart. Mass call is of course Mess Call that someone spelled wrong. What worked for me is that I review four or five calls each night before bed. I hum them first and then listen to the call on the CD. The next day, I work out on the bugle until lip fatigue sets in.

Single bugle calls, clear and simple-recognizable to this Navy/Marine Corps veteran. Also some army stuff if you desire that sort of thing. Quite a lot of quality stuff.

5 out of 5 stars No horns? I say "GOOD RIDDANCE!".......2006-09-06

As a long-time, loyal fan, I'm confident in stating that Charge is by far the most impressive Aquabats album yet. The absence of horns have been replaced with genius lyrics, towering vocals and prolific guitar work. Each song a masterful work of art. Absolutely amazing stuff! These guys are at the top of their game. Aquabats unleashed!!!

4 out of 5 stars Devo anyone?.......2006-07-31

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the incredible similarities between the "Fashion Zombies" track and Devo's music (my wife actually thought it was a Devo track she had never heard.) "Fashion Zombies" is a revival the long lost art of punk/synth fusion, albeit much more poppy sounding. There are little lyrical gems here criticizing the effort goth kids (or "emo" as they get called now) go through to make themselves look scary:

"Dressed in expensive fashions
To look like they crawled out of coffins

And who can blame them?
They walk through asphalt cemeteries"

And this little parody of Vincent Price's bit in Micheal Jackson's "Thriller":

"Darkness falls across the land
The midnight hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To accessorize their black zipper hood"

If you have to shop at the mall to show how society has marginalized you...then you've missed the point. It is not an original theme, but it bears repeating...especially in the last 10 years.

Though I loved this particular track, I wasn't that impressed with the rest the tracks, but they weren't horrible. Admittedly, I have never been a big Aquabats fan. I gave it 4 stars based on the strength of this one track.

Btw: If you are new to punk/synth fusion sound and like it, look into stuff like The Stranglers - "No More Heros", The Nuns - "Suicide Child" or Devo - Penetration In The Centrefold.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Return of the Aquabats!.......2006-07-16

The Aquabats have done it again, only with 5 members this time instead of 11. The Aquabats are hilarious, have awesome riffs, lyrics, and overall tone. It doesn't have all the horns of the earlier albums, but they compensate with vocal backgrounds and more guitar riffs. One of my favorite cd's!!!

1 - For your own safety - only a few seconds long, a nice opener

2 - Fashion zombies - makes fun of emo kids, but all in good fun. Awesome lyrics and opening guitar

3 - Stuck in a movie - You enjoy it more every time because you catch something new every time!

4 - Tiger rider vs. the Time sprinkler - Mystic, extreme, how do they do it? Awesome bridge.

5 - Nerd Alert - Saying that nerds are really cool. Raise your fist and take a stand, with your super-cool wrist bands!!! Catchy tune, hysterical theme.

6 - Plastic Lips - Beautiful girls really are too good to be true, aren't they?

7 - Look at me, I'm a winner! - Awesome guitar, lyrics, and overall point.

8 - Hot summer nights - Definitely one of my favorite aquabat songs of all time. Why can't guys take a hint?

9 - Once again, amazing guitar and vocals. A little repetitive.

10 - Mechanical Ape - The title says it all, this song is yet another glorious display of Aquarandom goodness.

11 - Demolition Rickshaw - Highly energetic (as are all aquabats works) good on a stressful day. :)

12 - Waterslides - Gets away from the traditional Aquabats saound and feel, yet one of my favorites.

13 - Awesome Forces - Way to go out with a bang, this is one of the best songs on here. Stating how they're the rock band to battle all the villians.

4 out of 5 stars It makes me wonder if this world is plastic...........2006-05-16

Im not the greatest fan of the Aquabats, i knew 5 or 6 old songs and they were pretty good. This album is very different, theres less trumpets, its more rocky (not to the extent of actually being rock music though) and dare i say it, a hint of angst creeps in?

Most of the songs on this album are very good. Instrumentally less complex but keeping to the same formula of singing, the aquabats have conjoured up catchy tunes that are also well rounded songs. Fashion Zombies is a great start to the album, the singing style perfectly complimenting the bouncy background. In fact, apart from 'Meltdown' which i could take or leave, this is a very solid album.

The album isnt for everyone as the lyrics may prove to be too repetitive for some (look at me look at me look at me, im a winner, im a winner!) but its great if youre an aquabats fan or generally like a ska singing style

i personally think this album is great, i hope they make many more

3 out of 5 stars Suerhero Aquabats are back!.......2006-04-13

The 2005 release of the Aquabats' charge is a creative, catchy, and solid album for the quintet. Prior to my purchase of this album I have never heard of the aquababts, what made me make the purchase was that a friend of mine found the front and back cover interesting and wanted to see what the playing cards inside were all about. My first listen I was not impressed, but as I do most albums, I wanted to give it a second chance; I did, and enjoyed it much more. The songs are all catchy, and I find myself to regularly get a few of these songs stuck in my head.

The most notable track in my opinion is the hard rocker; Look at me (I'm a winner)! The song has a lyric that references classic rock (Four radios blasting classic rock, and they're pointing at you). The song itself sounds quite similar to a classic rock song, and is my favorite off the album. The song following that (Hot summer nights) is another catchy, and funny song. It's the only song I know of that has the name Elizabeth in the lyrics (Excluding Beth by Kiss, and The Allman Brothers band instrumental In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed)

The album was produced, engineered, and mixed by Cameron Webb. Cameron did a wonderful job, the instruments and sound effects used on the album sound crisp and excellent.

Overall I enjoyed my experience with this album. I figured that I would have it up for sale the day I bought it, but I thought wrong. It now sits among the beginning of my CD collection surrounded by other A-band artists.

Sirens, industrial noise, and ultra-intense vocals from singer-programmer-guitarist Martin Cock kick off The War of Art's aptly titled opening cut, "A Violent Reaction," and from there this 16-cut debut serves up more heavy nu metal bolstered with intelligent, disturbing lyrics. Like Slipknot, Mudvayne, Slayer, and other doomsayers, this seven-piece lineup's severe musical and lyrical take on modern society is more for moshing than humming, though songs like the surprisingly melodic and dynamic "Just So You Know," the spooky "Fall," and "Effigy 23" break up the grind of songs like "Seamless" and the pounding speed-metal onslaught of "Americ*** Evolving into Useless Psychic Garbage." Troubled teen types will likely worship AHC's deftly produced (by Rick Rubin), well-conceived, and fully realized songs and approach. The attention and care AHC put into the songs is evident. --Katherine Turman

4 out of 5 stars The loudest band I have ever heard. Period........2007-04-13

These guys are awesome live. If you think you know what loud is, wait til you get a chance to see them. My ears rang for days afterward. And that is a good thing, because their music should be played as loud as possible. I've seen them twice, once with Fear Factory, and once with Slipknot. They blew them both away. I thought the buildings would collapse. Paint chips were falling off the ceiling. Anyway, if you like extreme music, you'll do well to give these guys a shot. Lots of great songs with brutally heavy verses and some more melodic choruses.

4 out of 5 stars As intense as industrial metal gets.......2006-04-25

American Head Charge's 2001 debut is one very intense album. Before I discovered death metal, this was, for a long time, the heaviest C.D. I owned. There are moments of relief (like the slow, cool piano keys on "Sung For The Suspect"), but most of "The War Of Art" is a brutal, visceral, relentless onslaught. This Minnesota-based seven piece cram immense screams, distorted, pounding guitars, and frenetic drumming into nearly every song. "Pushing The Envelope" and "Never Got Caught" have pummeling beats and vocals which build from a spoken word to a visceral yell. Elsewhere, "Just So You Know," has thunderous guitar noise, and "Seamless" is backed by rhythmic, cascading, punching power chords. Track nine, "Americ*** Evolving Into Useless Psychic Garbage," is my personal favorite song on here. Its rapid, amp-destroying riffs make it the fastest and heaviest song on this disc. The last three songs worth mentioning are the pounding "Breathe In Bleed Out," the catchy, churning "Reach And Touch," and the machine gun riffs on "All Wrapped Up." In conclusion, "The War Of Art" is one very arresting debut which is recommended to everybody who is all Slipknot and Mudvayne fans. You should also really enjoy it if commanding, in-your-face, heavy, heavy metal is your cup of tea.

5 out of 5 stars Follow me now and I will drown you.......2006-01-12

When I first heard American Head Charge the song was Loyalty, from The Feeding. I quickly picked up that CD and pretty much loved it, but I kept hearing references to The War Of Art being even better. The Feeding, for me, was a great find, so for them to be able to top the intesity and overall mood of that CD, I didn't think would be easily done. After my first listen I was definitely impressed, but it wasn't at all what I was expecting. Needless to say, The War Of Art is one of those albums that takes a while to wear on you. One thing you're bound to notice is that this record feels complete. Each and every song feels complete, they don't seem short changed at all. This CD also displays much better singing than The Feeding did. Take Pushing The Envelope, that's one of the best songs to hear Martin's vocal abilities. The band also sounds a lot better on this release, they sound tighter, with more aggression. So yeah, this is light years better than The Feeding in every sense.

A Violent Reaction will be an immediate favorite to anyone who listens to it. The screaming is intense, the basic riff is great, and the use of sirens was a nice touch. Pushing The Envelope, like I said, displays the vocal abilities of Martin very nicely. The chorus and bridge is where you hear the most potential in the band. I absolutely love the opening line to Never Get Caught, it's hilarious. Despite the funny bit, the song is unrelenting with a simple yet effective chorus. Just So You Know seems to be a lot of people's favorite track offered, while yes, it's a great song, it's not the best. To hear a song mainly singing is nice though, I'll say that. Seamless has a good flow from verses to chorus which always equals a good outcome. Effigy has a slower feel to it but the riff is awesome and has some interesting vocals so it's worth a listen. If you wanna hear one of the heaviest songs on here it's sure to be Americ*** Evolving Into Useless Psychic Garbage. Anything you could gather from the title is what you'll get upon hearing it. Distorted vocals, insanely heavy beats, everything you're sure to love. Breathe In, Bleed out is another track that's mainly singing but has a nice beat. Fall is my favorite American Head Charge song, period. It has, by far, the best beat they've ever put out and the song just builds to an insanely intense ending. The only thing I could say bad about this song is that it's not long enough, but it is. Nothing Gets Nothing, the last track, is a great way to end. They utilize the slow verses/heavy choruses perfectly and have very good lyrics. No complaints here.

My favorite songs are A Violent Reaction, Pushing The Envelope, Never Get Caugh, Seamless, and Fall. I'm convinced that there's no way American Head Charge will ever top this release, I mean it's got everything, heaviness, melody, great lyrics, great vocals, everything any music fan is sure to enjoy. It only helps that the CD feels complete when the last song finishes up. I also don't think there's any way the band could've sacrificed any song on here and still have the record have the feel it does. Each song, good or bad, is pivitol to the outcome of the CD, and that's a feat in itself.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing album from a great band........2005-12-08

About a year ago my friend told me that American Head Charge (a band I had never even heard of) was doing a show at First Ave. in Minneapolis in a couple weeks with a few local bands. He gave me a copy of The War of Art and, not thinking much of it, I only listened to it once or twice and not even all the way through. After seeing them live for the first time I was blown away. The next day I listened to the cd again, which blew me away as well. I don't know if I was even really listening to it before or what. Anyway, this is one amazing album from a great band, I went out and bought it for myself only a week later and it's still a cd I listen to at least once every week. Anyone who likes any kind of rock or metal music should buy this cd.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!.......2005-10-17

This band never ceases to amaze me...i've seen them live twice and they're incredible, and they do the same on CD. Definately a band everyone should check out. Good sound all around, unique, heavy, just all around amazing.

5 out of 5 stars A knock-down killer version........2005-12-27

I have always been a great fan of Fennel. And, of course, sharing the same birthplace had nothing to do with it.

I have also loved both the Fireworks and Water music as well as the Holst. Having played them all in an Army band, I can really get inside the music. The Holst was even scored by the composer for military band.

All that said, Fennel is it! This is by far the best conducted and best played version I have ever heard. It is always thrilling, is never dry, like so many others. I have treasured my LPs for years, and am very pleased to hear a CD version that is almost as good. And for all the bombast, none of the inner datail is lost. Fennel and the Eastman are legimate national treasures.

Warning: If you ever hear this played on a good system with a subwoofer, you might just want to buy a subwoofer, too.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Great Albums.......2004-12-14

This album, which combines two CD albums, was originally recorded via the Soundstream digital method in 1978. The Holst and Handel pieces were originally released on LP as Telarc Stereo no. 5038 (on the jacket) or Stereo 10038 (on the record label).

When ititially released, this record caused a sensation as no one had ever heard sound like this on LP previously. This was partly due to the then-new digital recording (at 50 kHz), the German pressing which was far superior to what was available in the US at that time or any time previous, but mostly due to the magnificent performances offered here. I bought two copies of the LP - one as a "protection" copy; at $17.98 each this was no mean purchase.

The initial CD release in 1983 was terribly disappointing. Upon hearing it, in a controlled venue, I knew there was something wrong but I could not identify what it was. We now know that the conversion from 50 kHz to 44.1 kHz is problematic at best and dreadful at worst.

In my opinion, the whole CD "thing" was a disaster for good recorded sound. (The sampling rate is far too low; okay for "rock and roll" music, which is artificial to begin with, it makes most classical music sound terrible.) I have been called a "luddite" for staying with LPs, but I now know my decision was justified as I knew that putting in a CD player would be a retrogression in sound.

My son introduced me to SACD recently, with its far higher sampling rate and better means of recording and I bought three Sony SCD-CE595 players, one of which has been put in my "main" system (Hafler DH-101 Pre-amplifier, Hafler DH-200 Amplifier, Klipschorn speakers), the first "digital" component to be put there.

Having thus heard this new SACD album through that system, I can honestly say that I personally have never heard it sound so well. I believe that everyone will like this music, even if not a "classical" fan, and the sound itself will astound. This release (along with the RCA Living Stereo and the Mercury Living Presence SACDs) has rekindled the joy of hi-fi for me again!

I give it my whole-hearted recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome record results from stripping down their sound.......2007-04-13

While I loved their debut, I was blown away by this one. Better songwriting, better hooks, more vocal range, more diversity in song types. They've grown in just about every way. They are still heavy, though. Don't ever worry about that.

5 out of 5 stars Talent Screams.......2007-03-21

This would be considered extreme alternative, like slipknot, with a very different sounding lead singer.

Half of the songs are screaming hardcore in your face

Half of the songs are slower but still obviously not "happy lets be friends" songs

5 stars because BOTH their slow and fast music show true talent and diversity

4 out of 5 stars Charge It Up!.......2006-11-11

When I first got the "Feeding" CD by American Head Charge I felt that I was listening to a band that was moving away from the nu-metal style and instead were employing a more industrialized groove that at times reminded me of Marilyn Manson or even Nine Inch Nails. I was brought to this conclusion by the way singer Martin Cock handled his vocals from soft subtlety and then to raging yells. The riffing of the guitar and mixing in of keyboards transform this from being a run of the mill band. Kicking you right in the face with this is "Loyalty" which is one of my fave tracks on the CD. It's a great mix of Metal attitude and Melodic harmony. "Dirty" is another fierce number and a staple in the bands live performance. The band is definitely versatile and on tracks like "Ridicule" I was almost reminded of Faith No More at times in the track. The lineup for the recording is as follows: Martin Cock (vocals), H.C. Banks (bass), Bryan Ottoson (guitar), Chris Emery (drums) and Justin Fowler (keyboards) and a solid lineup it is. Friends for years the band first unleashed their brand of mayhem on the world with 2001's "The War Of Art" and appeared on that same year's Ozzfest.

So who should look into AHC? Pretty much anyone who enjoys a certain level of in-your face intelligent Metal that often defies the convention of their peers. There is very little to disappoint on the CD and after repeated listens and seeing them live I found myself enjoying the music a little bit more. The packaging is loaded with the lyrics and offer a little insight into the demons the band is often singing about. Sadly, the group suffered the loss of guitarist Bryan Ottoson while died will on tour with Mudvayne. Since that time the band has vowed to carry on in his name the way he would have wanted them to. Check out this very interesting group and try to catch a show if they come around your way.

4 out of 5 stars No Sophomore Slumps for AHC.......2006-04-11

While I used to worship The War Of Art, I actually like this new cd alot better. The music style has changed slightly and seems to suit the singer better. Songs like Dirty, Pledge Allegiance, Leave Me Alone....just go buy it.

4 out of 5 stars The Blues Church...at least during the 2nd half.......2005-01-30

This is a really cool album. Actually it's more like 2 mini albums in one. It's 2 different bands with 2 quite different approaches.

Tracks 1 - 4 are Cannonball on alto, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums.

Tracks 5 - 9 are Cannonball on alto, Wynton Kelly on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Tootie Heath on drums.

Tracks 1 - 4 are nice enough, but for me, tracks 5 - 9 are the heart and soul of this album. The 5 - 9 band is just killin'... bluesier, soul-drenched, hard-swinging magic. Plus I just like the later tunes more than the first ones.

I remember the first time I listened to this disc. For the first few tracks I was thinking wow Cannonball isn't the bluesd-out soul master on this one. Then the disc hit that midpoint where it changes bands and I was like now THIS is what I come to hear Cannonball for! Even the sound is better on the 2nd half. There is more of a magical halo around Cannonball's tone. It has more of that open, spacious Blue Note type of feel.

Ditto that on Wynton Kelly. Not so much on that golden halo, but on the playing. The first half is nice enough, but the second half is that bluesy, slowed-down, knock-out quintessential Wynton Kelly playing. He was one of the all-time greats. There's no two ways about it.

Just get this one, you won't regret it. You could even get this and Cannonball's "Something Else" as your 2 first jazz discs and be well on your way to a killer collection.

5 out of 5 stars Sparkling!.......2004-09-19

This recording is a reminder of what a great pianist Wynton Kelly was. He sparkles and shines everytime his fingers hit the keys. He is the perfect match for Cannonball's jaunty alto sax. Bassists Paul Chambers and Percy Heath and drummers Jimmy Cobb and Tootie Heath do their swinging things throughout. It is inevitable to compare this CD with another great Cannonball quartet recording, "Know What I Mean?," featuring pianist Bill Evans. "Cannonball Takes Charge" definitely holds it own!

5 out of 5 stars Cannonball Takes Charge.......2004-08-07

In my humble opinion, the most underrated jazz album ever! This album never seemed to get much attention mainly because albums done by Cannonball's quintet have overshadowed this masterpiece. Recorded while Cannonball was a featured member of the amazing Miles Davis Sextet, this album demonstrates him at the top of his game. The album has this very light feeling about it, even though Cannonball swings hard. The way Cannonball and the band (Wynton Kelly on piano, with either Paul Chambers or Percy Heath on bass, and either Jimmy Cobb or Albert "Tootie" Heath on drums) treat these classics is just amazing. The only track that isn't a standard is the intriguing original "Barefoot Sunday Blues", which once again demonstrates Cannonball's mastery of the blues. If I had to pick my favorite track on this set it would have to be "Poor Butterfly" (It's interesting to compare the differences between this version and the one on Sonny Rollins's masterpiece "Volume Two".) This album really deserves more attention than it gets, so if you're a fan of "Somethin' Else", Cannonball's work with the Miles sextet, or his work with his classic quintet, you will love this album!

5 out of 5 stars From the cover to the last note..........2003-09-26

This is a great CD. True, it was a Riverside session - the cover is a Riverside picture - and now released by Capitol, where Cannon went in 1963, tapes in tow, and that shows both in the groove and the personnel: Wynton, Chambers, Cobb, and the Heath brothers. Every single track, alternate takes included, is Cannonball blowing in his very best soul/gospel/blues/bop mode. It is interesting to contrast "Barefoot Sunday Blues" on this recording with "Spontaneous Combustion" on the equally 5-star "Cannonball 5tet In San Fransisco" with a completely different group of sidemen and his brother, Nat. Notice also Wynton playing the identical 'turnaround' on this tune, right before Percy takes his, as on "Things Are Getting Better", the title track from another Riverside classic. Really nice to see this material reissued on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Consummate Cannonball!.......2002-10-29

Unquestionably, the best album under Cannonball's name. The quintet/sextet albums are mostly geared to a more pop market and contain much "packaged" soul and funk, while the dates Cannonball shared with Miles, Bags, Bill Evans, Coltrane, and Gil Evans often find him deferring to or competing against musical temperaments not wholly sympathetic with his own. But with no other horn to share the solo space and a grooving accompanist like Wynton Kelley, Cannonball indeed "takes charge," having his ebullient, inventive way with a varied program of show tunes ("If This Isn't Love)," soul tunes ("Barefoot Sunday Blues"), jazz standards ("I Remember You") and sentimental old favorites ("Poor Butterfly"). And the photo of Cannonball on the front cover of this Riverside classic is as good as any I've seen of this masterful musician. For the sake of jazz fans, saxophonists, and collectors everywhere, let's hope this one remains in circulation, digitally remastered or not (Cannonball's musical mastery is sufficient in itself).
