5 out of 5 stars An Album that Guides the Mind.......2004-12-30

I recently got into Durutti Column, when a friend in Turku, Finland of all places, introduced me to their music, while we were eating pizza and conversing. I asked her to recommend as many albums as possible by Durutti Column and I've liked all that I've heard to date.

Vin Reilly is the ringleader and a Mancunian guitarist with a very distinct sound that one will never be bored with. Add to that minimalist electronica and an underground style percussion, and you have a good idea of the sound. There's a lot of diversity as well.

Track 5, for example "G&T" is a short reflective, gentle jazzy piece with an alto sax and classical guitar. It's gentle, brief, touching, and invokes calm warmth imagery that ironically gives one cool goosebumps, like Manchester warmth on a cold, unfair december.

Then there's the daydreamy track 6, "Remember Me" which is like a shelled, frozen feeling of ectasy trapped pleasantly beneath a reverberating, sweltering heat hidden by the shelter of the coolness. It cures the mind while listening to it with it's soft day dreamy beat (similar to the tempo of "queen's" - "she makes me (stormtroopers in stilettos)."

Then, track 7 is an acid house sort of sounding track, that's very techno and is great to meditate to. Reminiscent of technoy stuff you'd hear by Future Sound of London.

The opening track is "Fidelity" which is an interesting techno sort of sounding tune.

All in all, I've enjoyed this the most of all the Vin Reilly music I've come across. I'm still new to Durutti Column and I am sure that I'll run into more gems.

At the moment, I consider Fidelity to be the best Durutti Column album I've heard.

3 out of 5 stars From the hip.......2000-06-01

Closely allied with Manchester's famous music scene, multi-instrumentalist Vini Reilly created some of the best and most original avant-garde pop music of the '80s. In 1990, he even gained some attention in club circles with the album "Obey the time", a great fusion of acid house with jazzy guitar lines. "Fidelity" tries to repeat this success, but since dance music made a great leap forward in the early-'90s, it doesn't push the boundaries very far. It's quite enjoyable and uplifting, though. The album's first half is much stronger, relying on gurgling sequencers and melodic techno-pop songs. The slamming title track, the wonderful "Future perfect", and the drifting "Abstract of expression" are the highlights here. However, the second half's tracks are mostly tedious. The pre-programmed drum loops drone on and on in "Sanko" and "Grace", and the more guitar-oriented tracks like "G&T" and "Storm for Steve" are not among Vini's memorable efforts. After all, "Fidelity" is an o.k. album for fans of Manchester-based dance music, but it displays that Vini has lost his orientation and his cult status in the '90s.

2 out of 5 stars uninspired.......2000-03-25

it's hard to describe and/or quantify, but vini's guitar playing seems a bit less inspired on this CD. i grit my teeth in saying that, considering that DC is one of my all-time fave bands...but add to that the baby-doll vocal stylings of elli rudge and a few missteps into electronica, and you're left with what amounts to a hodgepodge of a record. for completists only.

3 out of 5 stars You mess me up.......2000-03-02

Another "post-Factory label" effort, this album contains some good, if not particularly interesting music. Mixing actual dance rhythms with Vini's typical guitar playing, "Fidelity" is similar to 1990's "Obey the time", but less innovative and electrifying. And I've never been a lover of these childish female vocals. Take this album as a good first purchase for new fans, but as part of the largely brilliant Durutti Column oeuvre, "Fidelity" is a disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Five years later, still absolutely haunting..........2005-09-11

The first time I heard battleflag was on the 'be still my heart' episode of ER. I remember watching the credits at the end but didn't catch the name of the band who did the song. It's been kind've an 'on again, off again' search. Every once in a while I'd hear it on TV or on the radio but couldn't catch the name of the band or the song. Two months ago, I started listening to shoutcast radio. Last week, I heard it for the first time in it's entirety and found out who did it!

Funny, here we are FIVE years later and people are STILL talking about that episode and how this song was absolutely perfectly cast for the part. It's haunting melody tied in with the disturbingly frantic image of 'Lucy' mouthing "Help me..." to a stunned, shocked and helpless 'Dr. Carter'. That has to be one of the all-time suspensful season ending cliff hangers!

4 out of 5 stars battle flag by lo-fidelity allstars.......2005-08-20

i also heard that song on that ER episode.but what really caught my attention was hearing on the movie soundtrack "Forces of Nature" and loved it.i just had to find it somehow. The songs listed on the music credits didn't help 'cause i had no idea what i was looking for. Until i came here to amazon and looked up the soundtrack and sampled bites off the CD and viola! there it was. Great song. THANKS AMAZON!

5 out of 5 stars ER PICKED THE PERFECT SONG FOR GREAT EPISODE!.......2005-05-07

The 'Be Still My Heart' episode of ER has the most shocking ending for any episode of any series on tv. Every time I hear this song it makes me think of the stabbing in the last couple of minutes of the epsdiode. This is a great song with a catchy beat. It is really different than anything I have ever heard.
This is a must for ER fans and just plain fans of great music.

5 out of 5 stars Another ER watcher who looked up this song today.......2003-10-02

I had ER on yesterday also and that song came on. i was amazed because just last week that song popped into my head outta nowhere... cuz i heard it a long time ago i guess. i had no idea the name or any lyrics and then within a week the song comes on TV at the ER VD party i grabbed a pen and wrote down two lines
....tell me is it time to get down.... & we aim to please

and i did a search on yahoo with the lyrics and ER episode "be still my heart" (from TNT's website)

      5 out of 5 stars Thanks, ER!.......2003-09-11

Add me to the folks who discovered this song and group from the ER airing of it during Carter's shooting. I remember sitting there trying to catch some of the words so I could find the song, having no success, and waiting for MONTHS until I finally heard it again by chance. Love it!

5 out of 5 stars MAKES ME THINK OF AN ER EPISODE.......2005-04-05

I'm not a huge fan of the group, but I love this song. The first time I heard it was in the episode of ER where Lucy Knight and Dr. Carter were stabbed by a psych patient. I have heard it since then and it is great.

5 out of 5 stars It rocks! Yeah!!!.......1999-08-12

I think that this song is a musical exploration into the world of hip hop, punk, and just plain fun. The group did a great job mixing up the sounds of the 3 tracks.

2 out of 5 stars Upbeat but downbeat.......1999-06-08

This CD has maybe one good uplifting song on it. Battleflag Pt. 2 is the only song on the CD that is upbeat . The rest of the songs are somewhat dark, dull and boring. Overall, the entire CD is somewhat disappointing. If the CD single of Battleflag was sold, a lot more money would have been saved on this CD.
