Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Customer Reviews:
Helen Forrest--She Always Rates 5 Stars.......2005-09-13
It's hard for a lover of Miss Forrest to find fault with anything she did. This album is no exception. Her voice is scintillating as always. The sound quality is excellently reproduced--remember these songs are primarily from 78's. And the price is right. Is there anthing negative to say? One always wishes for more: if only the CD contained more selections! Helen was the best of her era. Everybody knew it then. And many of know that she is "for the ages." This album helps us understand why. (This reviewer invites people who love her to write him at pjones.@mail.nwmissouri.edu Let's keep her alive in our hearts.)
The best single-disc Helen Forrest collection.......2002-04-29
Helen Forrest was the greatest of the female big-band singers and, in my opinion, the equal of Frank Sinatra, the best of the male big-band singers. For anyone who wants to learn what she was all about, this is the place to start. Existing fans already familiar with her big-band work will want this collection as well, if only for the post-World War II duets with Dick Haymes.
This intelligently-produced single-disc collection brings together not only her best work with Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, and Harry James, both also the best of the Haymes duets. The 25 tracks offer about as much music as you can fit on a CD. The engineers have done a good job of restoring the recordings. In some cases they sound even better than reissues from BMG and Sony, who own the masters.
The disc includes seven recordings each with Artie Shaw, Harry James, and Dick Haymes, three with Benny Goodman, and one postwar solo recording. This makes a lot of sense because Helen Forrest came to prominence and matured as a singer with Artie Shaw and did her best-known work with Harry James. The stint with Benny Goodman, who hired her after Shaw disbanded his orchestra in 1939, was a very unhappy one for Helen and Goodman did not handle her properly. The postwar duets with Dick Haymes are nothing short of wonderful and show that she was a fully mature, intelligent singer who could make just about anything sound good.
Frankly, I will never understand why Helen Forrest did not go on to a successful career after World War II, as did Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, and Doris Day, for example. With the exception of Ella Fitzgerald, who had "gone solo" early in the 1940s and was not a part of the big-band era for very long, Helen Forrest was not only the equal of any of the big-band singers who went on to successful careers but, in fact, was better than most of them.
HELEN FORREST'S DEFINITIVE VOCALS!.......2000-02-06
Surely one of the greatest female vocalists of the 30's and 40's, Helen Forrest's voice shines in this fantastic collection. A gifted vocalist with a liquid and ethereal voice,Forrest began her career on radio singing under various names when Artie Shaw hired her to sing with his band in early 1938. Forrest then briefly sang for Benny Goodman (a personally unhappy experience) and afterwards joined Harry James in 1941 where her voice was complimented by James' schmaltzy trumpet and fine arrangements. After singing for James, Helen went solo; she died in 1999. Listen to "Manhattan Serenade" (with James) "Time Waits for No One" and terrific duets with Dick Haymes including "It Had to Be You" "Together" and "I'll Buy That Dream".

A Great Introduction To The World's Greatest Tenor.......2003-05-31
The transfers of the original accoutic 78's are very good and the selection gives you a great slice of the arias and songs that made him the benchmark for all tenors that have followed. This is a great introduction to his art and will make you want to get one of the complete sets.

Wonderful CD.......2006-07-30
Katherine Jenkins is a wonderful opera singer she reminds me of Nana Mouskouri even though I don't consider Nana a opera singer the songs Katherine Jenkins sings are very similar to Nana. I would highly recommend Katherine Jenkins CD to any body that like opera and folk songs.
Jason and or Peter.
Sensational.......2006-05-22
Sensational album. What a voice! No wonder she's taking the UK by storm. Her Italian rendition of the Dolly Parton song is impeccable. Her "Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep" will bring tears to your eyes.

Customer Reviews:
Delightful.......2007-01-03
What a beautiful voice! I enjoyed the selection of traditional and contemporary songs, particularly "Do Not Stand At My Grave and Weep", which I had not heard sung before.
A really terrific singer. I loved this album.......2006-11-08
This album is really spectacular. I've read some reviews of Katherine Jenkins that are less than complimentary, and I don't get it. What's not to like? Her voice is truly beautiful, rich and powerful. True, many of the songs on her albums cannot be called operatic, but that makes them no less valuable. I think "popera" is a legitimate style of music, and if it gets more people to appreciate some of the classics, what's wrong with that?
If you enjoy a beautiful soprano voice, like opera or broadway music, and are not confined to a narrow mindset, you'll enjoy this album.
Fantastic Jenkins.......2006-03-24
There is just one thing to say about this album:
Katherine Jenkins' voice is fantastic, and onoe of the tracks are better than the first one.
She will have a great future as an artist.
Taking opera to places other opera singers cannot reach.......2005-11-24
Katherine is an opera singer whose fan base includes many who do not normally listen to opera, or who (like me) listen just occasionally. She can sometimes be seen performing at events dominated by pop and rock acts, with the result that her albums sell in huge quantities (at least in the UK) and outsell many (but not all) of those pop and rock stars.
A look at the track listing on this and Katherine's earlier albums shows that she likes to mix classical pieces with popular songs drawn from a variety of sources. As such, I'm not sure that true opera fans will like Katherine's music (although some might) but those fans can console themselves with the thought that some of the true opera fans of the future may have discovered opera because of Katherine. So my review is mainly directed at fans who (like me) know very little about opera but who might be tempted to give this album a listen. As such, I'll focus on the familiar songs.
Katherine begins by singing an Italian translation of I will always love you, the Dolly Parton song that became an international number one hit for Whitney Houston. As a huge Dolly fan, I was curious to find out how this sounded and it's the reason I decided to buy this album. Of course, Katherine's version is very different from Dolly's or Whitney's versions but I was very impressed.
I vow to thee my country (track 2) can be interpreted as either a patriotic song or a gospel song. To those who are wary of patriotic songs, be reassured that this particular song has no cultural references - whatever your country is, you should be able to relate to this song.
Music of the night (track 5) is an Andrew Lloyd Webber song that Katherine sings superbly.
Nessun Dorma (track 6) became famous in the UK when the BBC used Pavarotti's version as the theme for TV coverage of a major sporting event (the World Cup). Katherine refreshes this fine song, which became a UK #2 hit for Pavarotti following its use as a TV theme.
Amazing grace (track 9) is outstanding - this is my favourite on the album. It's not my absolute favorite rendition of this song but I've heard (and loved) many versions and Katherine would certainly get in my top five.
All things bright and beautiful (track 11) is a song that I became very familiar with at school but had never heard subsequently until I heard it here. Well, it certainly never sounded anything like this good at school.
Over the rainbow (track 13) will forever be associated with Judy Garland but Katherine proves that the song adapts well to an operatic interpretation. Like Amazing grace, this is among the best renditions I've heard of this song.
We'll meet again (track 16) is another inspired choice as Katherine revives the Vera Lynn anthem superbly.
There is a deluxe version of this album that includes two extra tracks and some other stuff. One of the extra tracks is Don't cry for me Argentina. I'd like to hear this but I'm satisfied with the standard edition. You must decide for yourself whether you want to pay the higher price or settle for the standard version. Whichever version you buy, this is a hugely entertaining album if you like this kind of music, even just a little.

I was born & raised in Mississippi but now a resident of Memphis,TN so i never really lost my roots. I give all the music that they have made over the years a thumbs up. Sending all of my prayers out to the Canton Spirituals who recently lost there longtime keyboard player "BIG WALLACE" Strickland at the age of 33. He will be forever missed along with "POP" Watkins,Sr. Truly the will both play and sing above in heaven with the heavenly choir.
With much love and many blessings ahead,

Brilliant vintage hamonics!.......1999-07-21
The Comedy Harmonists were an a close harmony group who recorded in Germany from '28 to the late '30's. They were harassed and force to disband because of Nazi disapproval of their semitic origins as well as their avant-guarde, jazz-oriented material. They sing here in German and English doing everything from folk songs to Tea for Two with clarity, musical grace and lightness. Their comic songs are very deft and witty. If you enjoy close harmonics, you will find this recording a revelation.

With his 1999 Met triumph as Tristan--the most taxing of all Wagner's tenor roles--Canadian singer Ben Heppner has fully earned his heralded position as the great new Heldentenor of our time. His Lohengrin is a signature role, while his album German Romantic Opera has been nominated for a Grammy. Yet Heppner also commands tremendous versatility--and of a much more engaging character than that of the typical crossover effort--using his powerful, bronze-tinged tenor to tender and charming effect in My Secret Heart. This is a collection of songs roughly from the period between the two world wars, when music began to reach mass audiences via radio and screen. Many of these are almost forgotten gems--emblems of a vanished era--but once had wide cultural currency: the World War II hit "We'll Gather Lilacs," the radio show Family Hour's theme tune "Let My Song Fill Your Heart," and the oft-recorded 1919 ballad "The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise." Heppner, with his sturdy beauty of tone and sweet, natural-sounding vibrato, breathes new life into this genre. He handles the idiom's unabashed schmaltz with charm and brings a lilting urbanity to two Noël Coward tunes, with especially bittersweet refinement in "I'll Follow My Secret Heart." --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
Almost too much lavender and roses, but a delight anyway.......2006-08-29
These are beloved popular songs from our grandparents' generation that are redolent of lavender an tears. Their sentimentality couldn't be more out of fashion, but Ben Heppner steps forward, like Mario Lanza before him, to offer thrills amidst the honeyed scents. He's totally sincere, and you'd have to be Alberich or Don Pizarro to react with anything but a melting heart. God, I'm falling into the same vocabulary as these songs. No need to blush, though, with such a great singer at hand.
Mr. Heppner Must Have A Large Parlour!.......2005-02-22
I purchased this CD after hearing Mr. Heppner in recital singing "Homing" for an encore. This small gem written by Teresa Del Riego is a haunting song about loneliness. We learn from the notes-- they are very informative with bios on the composers included here as well as the words to the lyrics-- that she composed this ballad in 1917, the year her husband was killed in France just before the ending of World War I. There are other lovelies here as well: "I Love Life", "We'll Gather Lilacs", "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise" as well as music by Noel Coward, Sigmund Romberg and Rudolf Friml. Heppner also sings "I'll Be Seeing You." It's such a relief to hear someone other than Liberace do that number since it was the song that he always used to close his television show in the 50's and unfortunately made into a syrupy cliche.
Mr. Heppner says these are songs of the parlour, stage and silver screen. His glorious voice which appears to be a combination of steel and gold fills a recital hall easily. He would need a huge parlour to sing in as well.
This CD is quite wonderful. There are no dull cuts. Since the songs are all about love, this would make a great February 14 gift.
He can keep his secret to himslef.......2003-12-13
This is OBNOXIOUS, this dude should be in operas. i am speechless, he is one loud mouthed dude!
What a 'crossover' album should be!.......2001-09-01
In general, I hate it when classical singers make 'crossover' recordings. Usually the singer has no idea how to sing 'pop' material in anything like the proper style - even someone who is singing it because he or she genuinely likes the music and not just to milk cash from the unsuspecting masses. But there are always exceptions to a rule, and this CD is one of them. Ben Heppner here scales down his huge operatic voice and shows his 'secret heart', a more intimate side of his musical personality.
There is no question that Heppner is one of the greatest tenors of our age. He is often compared with his fellow Canadian Jon Vickers (with whom he shares much of his repertory) but especially here, he is beginning to remind me more and more of Jussi Bjorling, and I can think of no higher compliment. Part of this is because Bjorling actually sang quite a bit of repertory similar to what Heppner sings here, but more importantly, both voices have an ideal combination of power and sweetness. Heppner's is essentially a very lyric voice despite its large size, and he is capable of great tonal beauty and sensitivity. This not only makes his Wagner, Giordano, and Berlioz very special, but makes him equally adept with the gentle little gems he sings on this disc. He is helped somewhat by the fact that these songs, most of which were written in the very early part of the 20th century, are a lot closer to the 'classical' style than more modern pop. But what really makes Heppner perfect for this material is his total identification with the texts, his tenderness, and his utter sincerity. Also, his diction is superb - you won't need the printed texts to understand what he is singing. In the hands of a lesser singer, some of these old fashioned songs would be absolute treacle. But an artist like Heppner can raise up even 'substandard' compositions and give them the aura of greatness.
In the more upbeat songs, Heppner sings with the thrilling, heroic tone that has made him in demand in every opera house in the world. He makes 'Let All My Life Be Music' into his personal mission statement. 'Homing' was also a favorite of another great Wagnerian tenor, namely Lauritz Melchior. 'I Love Life!', complete with splendid high C, is sung with enough cheer and vigor to bring anybody out of a depression. But this repertory is often gentle and introspective, and Heppner can also easily fine down his voice to a splendid pianissimo, drawing you in and enticing you to pay attention as opposed to banging you over your head like many other tenors do. Ivor Novello's 'Love is My Reason For Living' and Ernest Charles' 'Let My Song Fill Your Heart' are light, gracious Viennese waltzes. The familiar 'Roses of Picardy', 'Bird Songs at Eventide' and 'I'll Be Seeing You' are also sung sweetly and caressingly. Two more Novello songs are among the best tracks on the album. 'Someday My Heart Will Awake', is soft, gentle, and nostalgic, rising to a passionate conclusion. 'We'll Gather Lilacs' is obviously a love song from Heppner to his wife Karen (to whom the entire album is dedicated), full of yearning and deeply moving.
The operetta selections are even more special. In the Serenade from 'The Student Prince', which is alone worth the price of the CD, Heppner makes something truly thrilling of the declaration 'Oh, hear my longing cry!/Oh, love me or I die!', and ends with not one but two spectacular high Cs. What a pity that the chances of him ever recording the entire operetta are so slim! The cajolingly sung title song from 'The Desert Song' is almost as fine, as is 'Love Me Tonight' from 'The Vagabond King'. Finally, the title song 'I'll Follow My Secret Heart', with yet another brilliant high C, makes a splendid finish to this very enjoyable album.
I should also give credit to noted composer and orchestrator Jonathan Tunick for his warm, rich, and perfectly scaled arrangements of these songs. Like Heppner, he finds the perfect mood for each piece and never engages in schmaltz that one might expect from some of this material. The only complaint I have about this disc is the one I have about many contemporary CDs - why is there only 54 minutes of music on a medium that can hold almost 80 minutes? There are assuredly more than 18 songs Heppner could have recorded in this vein. I would have liked to have seen more operetta items in particular. Although I suppose they couldn't have recorded the Drinking Song from 'The Student Prince' as well as the Serenade without a chorus, it would have been nice if 'Deep In My Heart, Dear' had been included. Still, the quality of what is there far outweighs the quantity. The excellent documentation, in German and French as well as English, includes a personal note from Heppner, biographies of all the composers as well as Heppner and Tunick, and complete song texts. The cover shows Heppner surrounded by red velvet, designed, amusingly enough, by Red Herring Productions!
Whether you're an opera lover who wants to hear a great tenor in a lighter mood, or a fan of early 20th century popular music who is curious to see what it sounds like sung by a genuinely great voice, this disc is essential. It is an excellent introduction to Heppner's artistry if you haven't experienced it before, and after listening to it you might want to try some of his opera CDs, both solo recitals and complete recordings. There are few voices that could serve as a better introduction for a neophyte to the wonderful world of opera. If only more 'crossover' singers (both classical and pop) had Heppner's musical integrity...
This cd has left me speechless, wow!.......2001-02-18
Air give me air, I need lots of air, air, air.......This cd has caused me a lot of adverse breathing.
The things that I have read about Ben have been very true. He really is a lot more than I ever bargained for. He is THAT GOOD.
I need to go out on a limb and say that he is the best tenor I have ever heard. In my wildest dreams I never thought anyone could be that good.
For this cd Ben choose to sing a lot of standards. Bravo! This is my kind of music. Ben did an excellent job crooning us with his golden voice. He knew when to hold back and when to sing at full strength. This is marvelous how he worked each song to get the full meaning out of it.
The only complaint I have is there was not enough of the good olde songs that I wanted to hear Ben sing. I know it's hard to please all the people all the time and I understand where Ben was coming from.
This cd is a must for the fans of beautiful opera singers who crossover with popular music.
