Imagine Pink Floyd's The Wall reconstructed from bales of hay. The idea of this concept album translated into a hillbilly hoedown of banjos and fiddles may sound interesting, but the results can wear thin pretty quickly. Part of the problem is that Canada's Luther Wright & the Wrongs don't sound like they have a deep attachment to either classic rock or traditional bluegrass. Instead, this plays like a joke--a Hee Haw skit carried to extremes. While the bittersweet balladry of "The Thin Ice" and the call-and-response of "Mother" adapt surprisingly well to the sound of old-time country, the banjo-driven "Another Brick in the Wall" and the jaunty drive of "Comfortably Numb" put the arrangements at odds with the mood of the material. Consider this release to be curious fallout from the chart-topping success of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, which sold most of its millions of CDs to those raised on rock rather than mountain music. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars A lof of fun for fans of The Wall.......2007-07-06

Amazing how much of the greatest album of all time, The Wall, translates so well to honkey-tonk.

Among the best: Mother, In the Flesh, Young Lust, Dont Leave Me, Run Like Hell, Another Brick part 1.

Ones that work the least: Another Brick 2, Hey You, GoodBye Blue Sky.

5 out of 5 stars So right but so wrong.......2006-11-06

I am not a country fan but this album may have me converted. The depressing lyrics of Pink Floyd and the twang of the country music is a surreal combination.

5 out of 5 stars Own it, love it, saw 'em live.......2006-07-03

Luther Wright and the Wrongs are NOT some hillbilly hicks, but a group of grungy alternative rockers who just happen to favor the banjo. They took an all-too-serious classic work and made it right, giving it even more punch on some of the dramatic highlights than its creators did. It's fascinating fun--I'd love to see them redo some old Smiths songs next!

3 out of 5 stars well worth the listen - a whole lot of fun.......2005-12-19

is it the origional - no - but it still makes it as a musical "tribute?" album. I have a blast with it each time I hear it. Look, if The Wall was your first exposure to Floyd I can kind of understand your dismay...but remember that this was a band that once had a sense of humor too!

In any case, the message within this composition still teaches a lesson if you care to listen.

> "...If I had my way I'd have all of you SHOT.." < - proof that history is always doomed to repeat itself when we don't learn from it (or even listen)!!!

WHY ARE THEY MAKING A TRIBUTE TO A ROCK BAND WHEN THEY ARE A STUPID COUNTRY BAND. THEY NEVER REBUILD IT, THEY DESTROYED WITH THERE REDNECK CRAP! WE WE'RE TOGETHER, AND WE STANDED! AND NOW THEY DIVIDED US ALL! LUTHER MUST SELL IS SOUL NOW!!

These guys are musical geniuses. "The Wall" is often redone in many different generas, but I have to say this is my favorite. Buy this CD and everyone you play it for will want a copy of their own.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless!!!!.......2003-02-16

First off I like Pink Floyd quite a bit and I also dislike country music quite a bit. So, when a friend first told me about this album I wasn't really interested. I figured that I would at least give it a try and after a couple times of listening to the album all the way through, I love it. To cover an already legendary album like The Wall, I would imagine, has got to be difficult. The Wrongs so it flawlessly! The least you could do is give it a listen, you might like it.

5 out of 5 stars the best tribute album I've ever heard!.......2002-10-26

I've heard some grumbling about this tribute from floyd purists...LIGHTEN UP!!! This album is great. I originally bought it as a "can you believe this" curiosity, but I listen to it constantly now. One measure of a good cover / tribute album is that the artist shows a true love of the original. That couldn't be more true of this album. Buy it now!

Kingston, Ontario twang rocker Luther Wright dresses up the first 13 tracks from the Pink Floyd concept album The Wall in a suit of traditional country and bluegrass styles complete with fiddles, guitars, banjos--the works. The fit is a remarkably good one, as the material lends itself to the novel concept on a concept. Even Floyd fans who don't care for country ought to be impressed by the band's adherence to detail.

While that sort of approach has made for some weak tribute efforts in the past, Rebuild the Wall Pt. 1 takes on an inspired life of its own from the first few strains of "In the Flesh?" through to "Goodbye Cruel World." Sarah Harmer, Carolyn Mark, and Winnipeg violinist Julie Penner are among the disc's many guest players. --Chuck Molgat

3 out of 5 stars Nice but get the full album.......2005-12-21

Loved the CD. Played it over and over again the night I received it. Very nice take on the Wall and well thought out and executed. Would be a 4 or 5 instead of a 3. . .

BUT there is another out CD there by Luther Wright & The Wrongs that contains 13 more songs from the Wall and includes all of the material on this one. It is called Rebuild the Wall as opposed to Rebuild the Wall Part 1. Don't end up like me and have to buy the other album as well!

4 out of 5 stars Authentic Bluegrass Sound... with a twist.......2002-10-10

Regardless of your opinion of Pink Floyd, this is still a great Bluegrass album. In fact, I think a lot of Pink Floyd fans may be too closed minded about this album.

The strangest thing about it is that it stays true to every lyric in the original album... word for word, but everything else is totally original... which is not easy.

Steve Martin used to have an entire routine about how it's nearly impossible to play a sad song on a banjo. This album contains several prime examples to prove him right that feature not only banjos but fiddles (While it may be true thag there were violins on the original Floyd album... bluegrass folks play Fiddles).

Case in point, "Goobye Cruel World": On the original Floyd album it's a slow painful lament of a numb rock star who's saying goodbye as he fades into his dark sedated world. The Bluegrass version on this album is a real toe-tapper that'll get a barnyard full of people jumping and stomping their boots!

If you are open minded about Bluegrass... buy it. For Floyd fans without any interest in Bluegrass... Be prepared; you may not be ready for this.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, accurate, but flawed.......2001-06-06

Interesting Cd that is clearly a loving and faithful version of the Wall. I think they are perhaps too faithfull. The Wall is about growing up in WW2 England and becoming isolated. Goodbye Blue Skys sounds out of place in Canada or the US where we never saw an enemy bomber. The theme of growing your wall works for the country, but too much seems to be literal takes from the original. Worth a listen, but not a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Good ol' Down Home Pink Floyd.......2001-04-11

What an interesting album, Pink Floyd bluegrass style. It puts a very unique spin on a classic album. If you can't stand twangy country, stay away! Otherwise you need to give this album a try! I can't believe it is considered an import! It's from Canada! Luther Wright has a weird sense of humor! I love the redneck woman talking at the end of Young Lust! He has covered the entire Wall from music to the little conversations. So, when does the movie come out?
